Unreal Tournament 2004
(hx) 02:32 AM CEST - Jun,03 2004

So there's Unreal Tournament 2004, sequel to Unreal Tournament 2003 released 18 months ago. Was it worth the wait? Definitely! I've been playing a lot of UT2004 these past couple of weeks and haven't enjoyed an on-line FPS this much since Team Fortress on the Half-Life engine. There's everything what you want from this type of game - exciting, fast-paced & furious & frantic.... nonstop combat and impressive atmosphere!

Single Player
The single-player game in UT 2004 remains relatively the same as it was in previous incarnations. Basically, it's just the multiplayer offline. Included for single player gameplay are two distinct modes, a storyline style tournament mode and an "instant action" mode. You draft a team of players and fight other teams in a series of matches. After a match, you pay money to treat your injured players, sign free agents, etc. Instant Action on the other hand is the offline "stress reliever"' so to speak, simply select a mode of play, customize the setup options and let loose on the computer A.I. Fortunately, the enemies (bots) are fairly good and use all the firing modes on weapons and take advantage of the special movements. Although the main intention for anyone buying this game would be playing it online or on LAN, I would suggest polishing your skills first in the single player tournament. There's nothing worse than hopping online in a new game and having no clue where you are or what you're supposed to be doing.

Multiplayer
As a multiplayer game, UT2004 is absolutely the best out there. The all new Onslaught mode rocks and Assault mode is back too! UT 2004 features over 106 maps in total, including 57 brand new maps for all existing game play modes. The retail modes include:
  • [NEW] Assault - One team attacks an objective, the other defends it. Attackers must accomplish several objectives in order to win the round. Defenders must prevent the attackers from achieving those objectives in order to win. Teams can exchange roles after each round. You can set the number of rounds in a match, and the time limit for each round. Accomplishing objectives for the attacking team may involve reaching a key location, using machinery or computers in the level, or destroying a critical piece of hardware.

  • [NEW] Onslaught - Teams battle for control of the expansive map. You'll need strategy, strength and an almighty arsenal to win. Each team starts the game with its own vehicles. You can't steal an enemy vehicle unless the enemy unlocks it by first getting into the vehicle. But if your enemy leaves his tank to pick up some ammo, you can steal it. You start the match, run to a vehicle then run to a power node. After a few minutes, the teams will have reached the choke node in the middle and this is where the heavy fire begins. Imagine tanks, jeeps, jet fighters and tons of guys running around and fighting. Everything here is quick paced and heavy on the action. The first team to successfully secure all of the power nodes and destroy the enemy's power core wins the match.

  • Deathmatch - Kill or be killed - winner is first to reach target number of kills

  • Capture the flag - Each level has two team flags. In order to score, one team must pene-trate the opposing team's defenses, "Capture the Flag," and return it
to their home team's flag. If the flag carrier is killed, the flag drops to the ground for anyone to pick up. If your team's flag is taken, it must be returned before your team can capture the opposing team's flag.

  • Team Deathmatch - Just like normal deathmatch but you are no longer alone. The team that kills the most enemy players is judged the winner.

  • Double Domination - Each level has two Domination Points. In order to score, you must cap-ture both Domination Points (by running over them) and keep them in your team’s possession for 10 seconds. After scoring, the Domination Points reset to neutral and will become available to Dominate again after another 10 seconds.

  • Bombing Run - Each level has one ball in the middle of the map. The objective is to pick up the ball, deliver it to the enemy base and fire it through their goal. You must also defend your own goal to prevent the enemy from scoring. The ball is dropped when a player is killed and can then be picked up by anyone on either team.

  • Mutant - A Mutant game starts out as a free-for-all deathmatch. However, as soon as one player makes a kill, he becomes the Mutant. Everyone else stops fighting (you can't hurt each other anymore), and guns for the Mutant instead. You score points by racking up kills while you're the Mutant: Normal Kill: 2 Points, Double Kill: 3 Points, Multi Kill (and above): 4 Points. Mutants get all (non-super) weapons, lots of ammo, and have invisibility, agility and berserk. However, the Mutant's health slowly runs down and can only be replenished by killing other players. Also, the Mutant's position appears on everyone else's HUD. If a player kills the Mutant, they become the new Mutant. As an optional twist, the player with the lowest score is the Bottom Feeder - he can also go kill other players to score points. As soon as the Bottom Feeder's score isn't the lowest, a new player becomes the Bottom Feeder. The Mutant gets five points for killing the Bottom Feeder.

  • Invasion - Band together and defend your position against waves of incoming monsters. Each wave lasts between 90 seconds and four minutes. You cannot respawn if you die during a wave. However, as long as one player makes it to the end of the wave alive, everyone respawns for
the next attack. Monster difficulty is controlled by the bot difficulty option in the Settings Menu.

  • Last Man Standing - All players start the game with all weapons when they respawn, but players have a limited number of lives. There's an option to get health back when you kill someone. Win by being the last left alive
Similar to UT2003, you can at least tweak the gameplay a bit using mutators, a special "mini-mods" that you can activate when you set up a server.

Weapons, Vehicles
Weapons are fairly similar to UT2003, however have been tweaked slightly. The familiar weapons like the Flak Cannon, Lightning Gun, Link, Monigun, Rocket Launcher, Shock Rifle, Bio Rifle and Redeemer are back in action, but there are some improvements. The standard issue Assault Rifle gets a boost with an alt-fire grenade launcher which fire sticky grenades that stick to players, vehicles, and everything else - and yes, you can hold two of them at once! The sniper rifle returns, in addition to the Lightning Gun introduced in UT2003 for those that prefer the direct head shot. There's a new weapon called the AVRiL which is basically an anti-vehicle rocket launcher. Designed to be used strictly against vehicles, the AVRiL allows infantry a fighting chance. Once the AVRiL has aquired lock, it fires a solid-fuel missile which will track the target as long as the reticle is held on the vehicle. While AVRiL is a powerful homing missile that is deadly against all manners of vehicles, it's pretty useless against other people on foot. Included with the new arsenal is a Mine Layer, which deploys spider mines, which are great for anti-vehicle that come into their vicinit and even better at anti-personnel.

As I mentioned above (Onslaught mode), the biggest addition here is the use of vehicles and stand alone gun turrets. Like games such as Halo, and Tribes 2 you have the ability to control various vehicles that will help you move across the map and totally control the points that you must take over. The vehicle control is tight and very effective. Unlike Halo that used the mouse for turning the vehicle, this one keeps the controls fixed to the WASD keys, leaving the mouse to control the camera. There are a variety of wheeled and airborne conveyances, including the Goliath tank, the Manta land speeder, the Leviathan super tank, the Hellbender and Scorpion (essentially SUVs powered by testosterone), the Raptor, the Leviathan, the Phoenix, and Humand/Skaarj Spacefighters. Some vehicles support multiple passengers to handle the extra firepower. All vehicles are well balanced out here. Yes, they are important, and yes, they are fun to play, but you can't win a game solely through vehicles. Besides moving vehicles, you can also take control of the gun turrets located on different points of the map.

Graphics & Sound
Graphically this game is still very good looking. Textures are well designed and character models are gorgeous. Also the colors, animation, and effects are sharp and detailed. Overall, UT 2004's graphics are simply outstanding. However, with the likes of Far Cry, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, DOOM3, and Half Life2 on their way, UT2004 may start looking a little dated a little soon. The sound effects and the soundtrack of this game are both top notch. Rockets whizzing past you in a surround sound with fast-paced game music playing at the background really improves the experience. There's also a long list of built-in voice communication options, starting with voice chat features that make it easy to chat with teammates as long as you have a headset or microphone plugged into your PC.

Overall
In all, the gameplay in this one leaves nothing to complain about. It's one of those rare games that have something for everyone. Also, you don't need a high-end system for the game to run, a mid-range one will do just fine. Even at maximum settings (1024x768/32) on an Athlon 2500+ PC with GF4 Ti4600/128 card the game was perfectly playable for me. These things aren't terribly expensive anymore, and it's well worth the price to make this game run smooth enough where you'll have steady framerates for online and off.

UT 2004 was definitely worth the wait and it's probably the best $40 purchase you will make busy for a long time. If you liked Unreal Tournament, or Unreal Tournament 2003, this is a must-buy for you!

We have a HL2/Doom3 Killer!!!

Phreezer Burnposted - Jun, 03 2004 - 04:09
The only difference between this and 2k3 is the vehicles and the classic assult but it makes all the difference. Deathmatch is lame since you can use the impact hammer alone and lead the server by more than 10 kills which is to much. I would like to see all games move to the Tribes/BF1942 vehicle gameplay because it breathes life into an FPS. This is more like a game add-on since most of the old maps remain and no new graphic changes really but I recommend it for a purchase.

first game ive bought in years. Its great and the mods are gonna be comming out like crazy. Im even looking into uscript coding. Great engine, great editors, great modability.

Tomposted - Jun, 03 2004 - 19:42
Ya? What mods are coming out like crazy? That's the problem with UT community. No quality mods and bleakness towards the future. Reason being why they had the million dollar contest, to try and attract modders. And the modders there are are putting out repetitive unimaginative mods. Deathball, ripped from HalfLife, CarBall or whatever they call it a ripoff of Deathball. Troopers, ripoff of Jedi Knight. Then you got your CS clones etc.. Great engine, zero mod development and no originality. You can have a great game but if you got no real modding community then it's just UT and that's it. Same story for UT, UT2k3 and now UT2k4. All same crap or ported crap. I play UT2k4 on and off but general game play is boring/repetitive. This isn't a flame and actually I was participating in a mod for UT2k3 called Faceoff that died when the lead designers main interest was winning a prize('was' $800), then he left the project after further lies to the team and his own collegues. the whole team collapsed after that. Was our mod original? Well it was going to be but we couldn't find any developers as they were all involved in the contest. Hegi eventually did win and he has left UT all together apparently looking at modding for HL2, (is there a contest for that too, I wonder) I've yet to see an great mod for UT2KX or hear of a good one that has interested me. As for HX's review I think he over rated this game, but from reading it I'd say it's biased on the part he actually plays it alot.

WHAT! no good mods! you are crazy, have you played ALIEN SWARM! awesome Mod http://www.blackcatgames.com/swarm/ , or Red Orchestra http://www.redorchestramod.com/ plus great new maps and packs coming out all the time :)

Jaredposted - Jun, 03 2004 - 22:58
Actually from looking back at Tom's comments he said that he tried Red Orchestra and he didnt like it (And besides its a copy of BF1942 and Call of Duty).

El_Coyoteposted - Jun, 03 2004 - 23:00
tom You cant have everyone making mods come up with new gameideas. you sound like you expect each team to reinvent fire.

El_Coyoteposted - Jun, 03 2004 - 23:01
oh and by the way - Alien Swarm reminds me of Space Hulk (Games Workshop tabletop game conversion)

clones!!posted - Jun, 04 2004 - 02:14
just about everything is a rip of something else now adays. You may not know at the time but im pretty sure that about 95% of the mods/convertions you can find a game that is close to it. I like tactcial shooters but i dont like them all even though some games are clones you have to look for the small things that make them diffirent. Thats where you will find originality or at very least playablility.

Tower of Babelposted - Jun, 04 2004 - 02:18
tom: I agree with a lot of what you said... I dunno why in the hell people want to make mods of games or other mods that already exist.. its like WTF? be original or dont bother.. but still ive looked into unreal script and i think it is the most easily moded and widely configureable engine to date. You cant beat that and probably wont until unreal 3. And about the mods; There are already several mods out for this game and even though jailbreak has been done before, the mod has outstanding quality and i find it fun (ive never played it before). Red orchestra does suck methinks but thats just my opinion. Ive tried a few little-known mods and some of them are pretty fun and original, but there are no or few servers for them cause no one knows about them and they are still kinda buggy. Mutators are cool also because a mutator can change the game a lot and be very small and downloaded right from the server. For only being in existance for this long though, there is a ton of community-created stuff for this game.

VooDooposted - Jun, 04 2004 - 09:18
till half life2, or Doom3, this game iz za best, multiplayer rocks. It`s one of the best games i ever played, buy the original!

Wolfentsteinposted - Jun, 04 2004 - 12:08
Sorry, but i like Wolfenstein ET better, though i enjoy a game of UT 2004 from time to time

Tomposted - Jun, 04 2004 - 15:34
lets see in a year from now just how much this game gets modded. Then you can come back here and apologize to me. Thanks. The engine is great. The code is nice. But as a coder for the community, which 3/4 of you aren't. The community is and always has been bleak for UT. Alien Swarm is not an original mod. Red Orchestra is not an original mod. EVERYTHING for Ut so far is a ripoff or unoriginal. You think someone is going to leave HalfLife to play UT? right.. Upgrade their machine and play the same game on a different engine. Uh huh.. I love that, you have to look at small things to make them different. I think Ut and the engine is great but when it comes to mods. There's nothing original on the horizon and there is nothing currently available that's original.

Tomposted - Jun, 04 2004 - 15:37
I do play UT2k4 occasionally as well but unfortunately lose interest in about 30mins. And as some of you mention the code is easy and stuff, well I hope this ease attracts more development for UT but as I said, haven't heard any haven't seen any.

BEST VOICE OVER IP PERIOD. Full 3D voice over IP with speaker muting when U press the F key to speak, way better than CS/Half-life voip technology. voip like no other. Now you can play with your speakers cranked, and a mic around your neck or desk, press the speak key F and sound is muted while u speak. Great Job, Tim Sweeney and company, U guys ownzzz!!

Do you guys plan on buy this game every year? seems like the same game to me except a few updates. Imagine buying windows every year, that would suck.

Ihopenooneposted - Jun, 05 2004 - 11:01
So instead of updating their game for free like everyone else they are charging for it, totally lame.

Bill Gatesposted - Jun, 05 2004 - 11:19
To THISGAME. You do buy the same copy of Windows every couple of years!!! I just give Windows a new GUI and add some new useless software which came from companies we bought out since the last release. =)

El_Coyoteposted - Jun, 05 2004 - 15:15
"Do you guys plan on buy this game every year? seems like the same game to me except a few updates. Imagine buying windows every year, that would suck." theres not going to be a UT every year. 2004 is a major improvement to 2003.. hence the trae in rebate.

tigermonkposted - Jun, 05 2004 - 21:11
i've been playing the demo nonstop since i downloaded it 2 days ago (literally, my girlfriend is pissed lol) but this game fucking rocks! i haven't played a good fps like this for a long time, ever since quake3 came out. i'm totally buying the full game asap.

Bill Gatesposted - Jun, 06 2004 - 06:47
I take back my last comment. I was drunk when I posted it. =D What I meant to say was every release of Windows(tm) is another evolutionary step towards making your computing experience easier, faster and MORE FUN! =D

Cartmanposted - Jun, 06 2004 - 09:18
Well, if you average out the price of Windows over the three years or so between versions you're spending the equivalent of getting UT every year. Plus at least UT works and doesn't need 25 patches a week. =D

Normalposted - Jun, 06 2004 - 14:10
The mods I would welcome to this release are: Chaos (UT) Superheroes (Q2) Unreal 4ever (UT) They are fun, awesome, and original. :)

Not only that but I talked to dev's prior to ut2k4 to put it on dvd, no no couldn't do that, that's for the special promotion. Now I'm stuck with a 6 cd mess here. Thanks Epic! @Jared, what do you think of Theif?

To all those people who complain about mods in UT being simply copies of other things, hasnt it struck you that there has been very few completely new things added to FPS gaming since around unreal1. Rainbow 6 heralded one of the first realisim shooters out, which is what counterstrike copied - so why the hate against frag ops or red orchestra? I have found that the UT communtity has been probably the most creative of any FPS game (possibly excepting quake1, damn that was a good game), mods like air buccaneers and Lazy Matrix(for the first UT)have been well done and implemented. And about it just being a small update for UT2K3, it isnt. It is more like making a leap from counter strike to BF1942. Basically the same core gameplay, with a few huge changes that change the surface of the entire game. Doubling the number of maps, adding a few new gametypes and mutators, throwing in more player models and adding vehicles is more than most sequels get in. Halo 2 for xbox only managed to put in a few things like dual-weilding and vehicle takeovers, but it is said to be one of the greatest sequels ever. Lastly about onslaught being the true test of skill, Id have to say thats deathmatch
