Swarog (hx) 01:08 AM CEST - May,05 2001
Swarog is an unique real-time strategy game set in ancient Russia. There is the story of a violent Pagan God and the people he leads to victory over their enemies. In a series of missions your leadership ability is put to the test and you have to gather food, wood and ore in order to take care of your peasants. Then tax them as you need to raise an army to protect your subjects from attack by the vicious invasion forces that threaten your borders. You can choose from the two scenarios, ones for Kranks or Luzhevyans. Each mission consists of several levels, each level has its own major task to accomplish in order to achieve victory (it may be complete demolition of enemy forces, seizure of territory, release of captives, etc.). Swarog includes four types of natural resources : food, wood, ore and money, plenty of buildings such s Hut (peasant's house), Barracks, Kapische (sacred place where peasant women learn to become witches), Smithy, Stud, Shooting range, and some movable structures - catapults, ships and flying machines. Swarog also includes units that represents people such a peasant men and women, volunteer, light or heavy armored footman and girls and boys Each unit has personal intellect, which is able to solve minor tasks. This individual intellect is based on the superposition of a number of factors like order compliance, instinct for survival, aggressiveness etc. Well, though all features above seems to be quite interesting, the game isn't much good playable, especially because all Swarog's units has very poor AI :( Also graphics and sound are poor. So why to play this not much well done game, when there are an excellent RTS games like AoE2, Fate of Dragon or Cossacks. Download playable demo (16.6MB).
snd: 2/5 - Not much, authentic Russian language SFX gfx: 2/5 -
Poor (old Warcraft II looking better) playability: 2/5 -
Poor, original ideas, full resource management, several different troop types, frustrating combat, stupid AI, no multiplayer
