Battlefield Vietnam
(hx) 05:44 PM CET - Mar,22 2004

There is no doubt that Battlefield: 1942 (review) is not only a great multiplayer shooter, it is also one of the most popular and influential PC game to be released in recent. Battlefield 1942 was a success for the fact that it had a large number of players in the one server at once (up to 64) and that players could easily switch from being an on foot soldier, to flying a plane, driving a tank or commandeering numerous other vehicles. Now the third game in the series (if we count Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of WWII expansions), Battlefield: Vietnam, take place during the Vietnam War, and it will let you play as US or US-allied troops (including the US Army, US Marines, US Special Forces, or the Army of the Republic of Vietnam) or the opposing Vietnamese forces (the North Vietnamese Army or the Viet Cong.

For the most part, the gameplay for Battlefield Vietnam remains pretty much the same as Battlefield 1942, except that the sequel has a completely different setting than the original and the main focus in terms of vehicles shifts from tanks to helicopters. There are 14 different scenarios (12 maps). Scenarios are inspired by some of the most famous battles of the war, including the Ia Drang Valley, Hue during the Tet Offensive, Quang Tri Base, and the Siege of Khe Sanh. Each side has a variety of unique weapons. You'll control a huge array of vehicles including tanks, jeeps, APCs, gunboats, and aircraft. Some of the combat vehicles straight from the conflict including the UH-1 Huey helicopter, M551 Sheridan tank, Phantom F-4 jet fighter and CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter and for the NVA the Russian-made T-54 tank, MIG-21 jet fighter, and Mi-8 multipurpose helicopters which were used to deploy troops deep in the jungles. So, you'll not only coordinate ground assaults with armored personnel carriers, tanks, and jeeps, but you'll also be able to creep up river deltas in patrol boats, and you can descend on enemy positions in attack helicopters. We could see some choppers already in BF1942 Desert Combat modification, however in Battlefield Vietnam the helicopters are better integrated into the game and much more intuitive to fly. Certain helicopters can also pick up various ground vehicles and boats. For example, when you are in a helicopter with this feature, you hold the right mouse button to lower the cable, then simple hover over the item you want to lift and it will attach to it automatically. Then you can release the button and fly away. When you're ready to drop, click the right mouse button again and your payload is released.

Single player (where you play amongst NPC bots) in the original Battlefield 1942 was mainly for training purposes (before you go to war on servers). In Battlefield: Vietnam, single player basically serves the same purpose. Unfortunately, the computer-controlled bots are still very lame. They even don't know how to fly helicopters properly :) Don't buy this game for single-player! Battlefield Vietnam features three multiplayer modes - Conquest mode, Evolution mode and Custom Combat mode. Conquest Mode is the same as what's in Battlefield 1942. The Evolution mode expands the conquest idea. This is where a map begins as it would normally, but at the end of the battle the map's alternate loads up. The scores, the team, and the player from the previous map are added to the new map and play resumes. In Custom Combat mode, the server can set what armies will fight in the selected map, what vehicles will appear and what weapons will be included or excluded from battle. There's also Punkbuster technology implemented.

There's no doubt that Battlefield Vietnam is more like an expansion pack than a sequel. It's not significantly different than the original, nor is it markedly better than Desert Combat mod. Fortunately, there are more vehicles and on a lot of maps the points are close together, making the combat a lot more frantic. There are only a few minor problems - the requirements are very steep and will not run well on a slow computer, and there are some graphical glitches that will hopefully be fixed with the next patch. Those who don't have a powerful enough machine or a fast enough connection to be competitive will hate this game, but if you can get it running, Battlefield Vietnam is still one of the best multiplayer experiences around.

System Requirements
Minimum: 933 MHz CPU, Directx 9.0b, 3D accelerated GeForce3 64 MB or equivalent DirectX9 compatible videocard, 256MB RAM, 2GB free hard drive space (additional space required for Windows swap-file and DirectX 9.0b installation),16x CD-ROM drive, Directx 9.0b Compatible Sound Card, MS compatible mouse, Keyboard

Recommended: 1.2 GHz CPU, Directx 9.0b, 3D accelerated GeForce3 64 MB or equivalent DirectX9 compatible videocard, 512MB RAM, 2 GB free hard drive space (additional space required for Windows swap-file and DirectX 9.0b installation), 16x CD-ROM drive, Directx 9.0b Compatible Sound Card, MS compatible mouse, Keyboard

Recommended for optimum performance: 2.0 GHz CPU, Directx 9.0b, Geforce 4 128 MB (Not MX) or equivalent DirectX9 compatible videocard, 512MB RAM, 2 GB free hard drive space (additional space required for Windows swap-file and DirectX 9.0b installation), 16x CD-ROM drive, Directx 9.0b Compatible Sound Card, MS compatible mouse, Keyboard

snd: 4/5 - great (new sound engine), killer soundtrack - classic Vietnam War protest songs
gfx: 3/5 - fairly good but nothing exceptional, game engine feels like the original, but it looks several notches more polished, city-based maps feel to generic, laggy at times when high resolutions are set
playability: 4/5 - strong multiplayer side and replay value, Punkbuster technology, 14 different scenarios, map editor, mod tools, requires a good computer, lame bots, some bugs and issues
genre: multiplayer first-person shooter
release: March 2004
developer: Digital Illusions
the game is similar to: BF1942, BF1942: Desert Combat mod
publisher: Electronic Arts

it's just not that good. should've been an addon not a stand-alone-full-pay game :(

True, BFV just isn't as revolutionary as the original 1942, but it's selling at a cheaper price which is worth a while...

I personally think BFV is pretty good especially it has blood and the F-Phantom and the Mig-17, patrol boat, appaches attack helicopter and so on. Not like BF:1942 that has no blood it in-turn are not real enough.

Lord:Robert Shamrockposted - Mar, 22 2004 - 20:47
Yes I agreed with [Mr.AL Dick-Hard] BFV is more realistic in term of blood, vehicles and weapons. I hope that the expansion pack will be bigger and better.

Tomposted - Mar, 22 2004 - 21:05
I love BF:V but I was laughing at the bugs, bugs that have been on since BF:1942 was released and even then some that still are not patched, like the resolutions and refresh rate fix. I find this game way more enjoyable than BF:1942. Since playing BF:V I have zero intentions of playing BF:1942 anymore. Don't agree on the graphics rating by HX but oh well. I find the graphics are way better and more realistic looking than BF:1942.. the light glaring on the metal, the guns, the soldiers are less edgy and they dont run like they got a stick up their arse..the flying has improved big time and choppers are way more controllable as well. If anything this game fails in is bugs.. this game has lots and I'm convinced even on PB servers there is cheating or some kind of see-thru bushes issues. The problem in this game for a solo player is the voice chat..a solo player like me who tries to team play with others usually finds himself being abandoned. Part of the reason I am really losing interest in FPS is because you 'know' others are voice chatting and ratting out your positions or you got the gopher thats on your team but serves merely as a spokesperson. same can be said for most game. I think its a fun game, but I'll only play it when I got someone to play with otherwise it's pointless. I agree whole heartedly, hopefully after the patch this game is going to seriously rock as long as they fix all the problems.

some other last comments HX. No wonder you put the graphics at 3/5, christ man turn down your brightness, looks like shit. This is why I always wonder, why make maps dark or eerie? gamers will just crank up the brightness of the game to what was 'not' intended. And in HX's case he lowered the marks on the graphics and geez, fuck HX I wonder why? Do you realize just how much of the gfx quality you lost pumping them up that much.. sigh. Your brightness or gamma is like double if not triple mine. Overall, in most part your review is nice, but what you judged it on from what it appears in your screens is very disappointing. When your skills as a player requires you to blast the gamma and brightness up, I have to question your real skills as a player and as a gamer. I play default everything and it looks bloody great. But then, I don't really care if I die or not or if I'm not high in the score. It's for fun, not ego.

playing the game for 10 hours is not enuff to judge it . the game is good . cept tons of bugs .. some weapons classes are over powered like the mention m60 . however as VC you do have the power if you your cards right i knifed 8 m60 users in a row ... just need some tactics the sniping is kickass shame the death cam is on .. this build was made on the 1.3 patch/engine .. tons of bugs back then .. even with all the bugs in mind it still rocks .. cheating .. yes mini map hack is back and some idiots got 3d hack working ... as an admin you can notice the cheaters .. and just ban not to mention the mass PB ban for dazz hack cheaters .. PB is maybe slow but it will catch up and will detect those asshole with their memory offsets to gain advantage . http://www.the-group.org

tom: I've changed gamma/brightness only for screenshots I've grabbed from the game for this review. The original screenshots looked too dark on my working PC (maybe my monitor dying..dunno), that's why I did it. However, I don't think the original screenshots looked significantly better. It's really hard to say that the graphics were excellent if you play Far Cry at the same time. The graphics are just slightly better than average.

Jaredposted - Mar, 22 2004 - 23:15
Wow Tom what a dirty mouth. But I agree with you. I have the graphics cranked to full and the game doesnt run slow. THe game is fun and is 500x better than BF1942

This game is crap. I was hoping for something better and will be waiting for MOH Rising Sun as BF Vietnam was just a waste of time

well.. still better than bf1942, cud've been better and smoother.. and thank god they improved the sounds and on land gameplay, except for the tanks and fighter planes which have the same.

@123, moh rising sun.. omfg.. talk about JUNK. @chris i play with a <50ms ping, must be you that has a problem, not the servers. I use All Seeing Eye,thanks. LOL@bitching about recommended specs. How about doing a little finger work to find the fixes???? ah shit, no, me work?! gosh! [to save you lazy asses the time and shut you up, first, in default.con put this, Game.setSoundBufferSize 400(BF 1.3 fix they forgot), then in videodefault.con put change the 0 to a 1 so it looks like this, renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1]. Now if it lags after this, then you got other problems, sorry to say. Also another thing, turn off occlusion, lower your channels to 32 and just simply make sure your settings are all default. I get 60-70fps most times. P4-2ghz, 768mb ram and audigy2. As to HX, dude you write great reviews and I had time to think about your BF:Vietnam and just by your screenshots alone, your review doesn't do this game any justice. Put the game at default settings and then play, F this brightness and gamma crap and play the game like a man. It's no wonder you didnt see graphics improvements you flooded the game with so much gamma and brightness you made the game look like shit.

Tomposted - Mar, 23 2004 - 02:51
don't use EAX either.. BF and EAX don't mix. It will hurt your fps, so put it to miles and leave it alone.

The game needs more MAPS & WEAPONS like in BF1942 patches & updates is the key. I agree initially the game looks like a large MOD than a standalone game but a few updates will sort it. Overall a very fun and enjoyable game. Lets See the flame thrower EA i want 2 ROAST n TOAST them GOOKS !

Peddyposted - Mar, 23 2004 - 12:59
@Tom: It's great you like it so much, good for you. I've played it too, noticing mediocre graphics, absolute piss-poor AI and framerate (granted, I didn't do any tweaks, although I think it's a bad thing if you have to tweak things to get a playable game... DX:IW anyone?). My machine is near the recommended specs, and the 1 time I played online I managed to get a staggering 2 (yes, 2) fps. So for me, this game blows. Just my opinion, and like I said, if you like it, good for you. Maybe I'll try the tweaks you mentioned and give it another shot, for now it's back to Far Cry.

roflposted - Mar, 23 2004 - 14:40
peddy - 2fps? you got an ATI right?

Bill Gatesposted - Mar, 23 2004 - 14:42
I'm glad they didn't make BFV an expansion pack for BF1942. Otherwise there would be nothing but problems with servers like Bf1942+ other expansion packs. At least this way, if you have BFV, there's only 1 type of server you can connect too.

@HX, ya well, if I didn't know anything about this game and saw your screenshots I wouldn't have a lot to say..Your pictures are saturated by white and gray and that really does take away from the game. My skill vs ego thing was not directed at you either, it was made in general. Just your prictures were a good example of it.

Rickposted - Mar, 23 2004 - 16:03
Actually I think a game should be judged on it's own merrits, not rating it against another game. Too many reviewers do this and it really skews perspective. Who cares about graphics compared to Farcry...it's a different game...I wish reviewers would stick to reviewing a game based on it's own merrits, not whethere or not it is a sequel or against another game all together. when I read a review I want to know if the game is fun or not, not how it stacks up against a another game. Anyway it's not just you HX it's every other "reviewer in the biz" Maybe I should start up a review service and lead the revolution! =D Simply put, BFV is fun ^.^

Tomposted - Mar, 23 2004 - 16:36

Anyone tried the mod Eve of Destruction for BF:1942? I'm inclined to think many of BF:Vs features were inspired by this Vietnam mod. Eve certainly beat DICE to the punch as it has been out for over 6 months at least. Why is BF:V compared to Desert Combat rather than Eve? Check it out: http://www.eodmod.com/news.html

BTW my PC system is updated and run on the latest and most respectful and feared the ULTIMATE RADEON 9800 XT PRO, and my pc handle ANY latest pc games out-there with any problems at all period. Our ATI's Radeon 9800 XT pro will kick the hell out off Nvidia card like you wouldn't belive it. TOM, I hope this will bring you encouragement to stand up for our ATI's RADEON VIDEO CARDS. Long Live RADEONS.

I really do like this game. Ive played bf1942 (less than a couple weeks ago since my last game) and the road to rome expansion. I think im the only one noticing this..but the game just feels so much smoother and less laggy than BF1942 did for me. Maybe its something to do with my machine or setup (using default settings in BFV) but it just doesnt chug like BF1942 did.

If you like ATI good, good for you. I'm done on this kinda crap, it achieves nothing and it never did. You can steal my id, you can post what you want with my name, it doesn't bother me in the slightest, I just laugh and continue on. In the end its a portrayal of your maturity. You can hide behind the fact you still have anonymous status here but inside you are who you are. Those that know me know how I talk, what and how I write and those that know me, trust me and my advice, that's all I care about. Going around shouting ATI rules etc, means nothing. You have nothing to stand on in your claim and to me you're just the byproduct of poor sites like Rage3D. The funniest thing I've seen in my time with a ATI card was someone who went and changed the default 'Nvidia - How it's meant to be played' with a ATI slogan instead. That to me just shows complete obvliviousness to an obvious fact, game makers still make games designed for Nvidia and proudly show it at the start of their games. You can hide it, but underneath, you will always know it said Nvidia. Again, just my opinion and my last remark on the ATI vs Nvidia debate. @B Gates, he's not worth it. The guy can't even type in proper english. I have yet to come across one ATI user here who can actually give any solid particulars as to why ATI is better, it's just all hot air and it comes from their butt. @Chris, the fixes worked for a lot of people I told, so I hope it works for you. Anyhow, time for bed. BTW, UT2k4 is pretty impressive everyone. Only disappointment I had was not being able to get a DVD version and having to put in 5 discs to install. Major improvements over UT2k3 and the graphics are way better than you saw in the demo and still it doesn't lag for me at 1024x768 with nearly everything maxxed and shadows off. I hadn't planned on buying the game, but I bit the bullet and I don't regret it at all. l8r. hehehe, another novel by me.. Enjoy and goodnite.

Nvidia and ATI are both good graphics cards but get this DOOM 3 is suppoting Nvidia and ATI is supporting Half Life 2 they ran a test on Doom 3 and Nvidia was actually significantly better with with the frames fp and etc. I seen any test on Halflife 2 though so I don't know which is better, but when I played a demo of BF1942 secret weapons I plaed on a Dell with 2.0 ghz 512 md ram and a like 200$ ATI Radeon 9700 and it worked fine, but I guess I'll have to try geforce 5200 ultra against the ATI Radeon 9700 on bf Vietnam I'll tell you guys the result maybe sometime

well, i really love this game too..i usualy played bf1942 all the time, but this ones far more fun! i think its also easier to play with the better weapons, it costs u less time and skills to get a high score:) i have a athlon 700 mhz and a geforce 4 ti-4200, but it all runs pretty good, not on all the high settings but its ok! it also runs ALOT better using win XP instead of windows 98 se! cya and greetz

Anyone hear about the new BFV patch? It's a patch that allows you to play as John Kerry. Yeah, all you do is hangout in a boat for a few months and get a shit load of medals just for getting hit by debris. The next addon will be called "BFV2- The Return of Hanoi John".

I loved BF 1942 but BFDC blew it away. BFV is cool but it dosen't compare to DC. There is not enough variety in it. All the battleships and Subs were taken out and the only real new addition when compared to DC is the terrain. It'll be better when the DC team gets their hands on it.

This game is tight i love it. The thing that stands out most to me is the way they depicted the era with the songs and facts during loading times. i got a pice of crap video card i think is a 9200 pci xtasy or somthing like that. pos! but bfv runs aight. bottom line, great game hella fun. sorry bout the grammar " I may not be a smart man but i know that bfv rocks"

Spicoliposted - Apr, 07 2004 - 10:19
I am enjoying the game except none of the buildings are showing up. I have a GeForce4 4200, are my settings too high? Or is this just a fubar disc?

Splitterposted - Apr, 09 2004 - 05:16
Try updating your nvidia drivers to the latest version Spicoli, if you havent already. Ive got the same card (128meg version) and it runs fine

I play'd this for the first time on my bud's computer and its awesome. It is a bit laggy and has server connection problems all the time, which can become annoying. heh Tom or anyone...I need to quick build a computer to play some of the newer and upcoming games like BFV. What do you suggest for a video/audio card selection? Thats what I typically get stumped on becasue there is sooo many selections. I bascially need the highest value per performance cards. I don't need TV capabilites etc, I just play some online games and listen to music. Any suggestions as I am trying to stay as budgetminded as possible. Thanks guys and I love this game!

also does the 128MB versus the 256MB matter for a game such as BFV or any newer games out there? I always wonder what is better to do: get lets say a lower end 256MB model or get a high end 128MB model?

I enjoy playing BF:V. It's not bad at all and should be recommended to other game lovers. It's enjoyable...

www.mayhemteam.com I made everyone on my team go out and buy the game...I love it and it plays great. I'll admit..the specs suck and i basically bought the game then built a computer that met and exceeded the min. req's x2 however ...it's not a game for everyone...I recommend 1 gig of ram. My video card is older ...an ati radeon 8500LE 128mb but you know...the game runs fine without pc lag...or hurting my fps. I will try the settings mentioned when it was released. I personally hated bf1942 but then i'm not a wwII guy...i like the vietnam theme...and hope they come out with more vehicles in the next patch...especially those PoE guys...need a black hawk in that mod...or at least something with airlift options. and how about mobile artillery that can be hooked onto a tank and towed out to the battle field.
