Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough (hx) 08:56 AM CEST - Oct,06 2003
Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough is the second expansion pack to the hit WWII first person shooter, Medal of Honor Allied Assault. The second expansion takes the game to Italy and North Africa by courtesy of new developer TKO Software. Was MoH: Breakthrough worth waiting for? Check out the review and find out...
In Breakthrough, you play the role of U.S. Army Sergeant, John Baker. You will join the battle at Kasserine Pass in North Africa, race to capture Messina in Sicily, and finally repel the German army at the historic battle of Monte Battaglia in the heart of Italy. If you played through all of the original MoH: Allied Assault and Spearhead, you won't encounter any surprises here though. The single-player mode is quite frankly disappointing as it is pretty much run and shoot all the way. The only good thing is that TKO's programmers alternate within the same mission first-person shooting action on foot and first-person shooting action in a vehicle.
Like Spearhead, Breakthrough contains three single-player campaigns (11 single-player missions in total), set in Africa, Sicily, and then throughout Italy. You can expect similar objectives like in MoH:AA: destroy a series of AA guns, rescue people, and of course, shoot enemy soldiers. In addition, there are some Jeep mounted machinegun missions, tank-driving missions, demolition missions, bombed out city missions. I found little bug(?) in the game - you can't kill soldiers riding on motorcycles, instead you have to aim for the motorcycles and blow them up. You will probabluy also hate the "invisible walls" preventing you from getting places.
The weaponry is basically the same like in the original game, needless to say that Medal of Honor has a robust selection of weapons. In Breakthrough they've added Carcano rifle, the bomba a mano (an Italian hand grenade), and the Moschetto Automatico Beretta MOD.38A (submachine gun), and also some British weapons such as new British bazooka-style weapon called the PIAT (simple, short-range infantry anti-tank weapon) and Vickers Berthier Mk3b (machine gun with amazing accuracy and power). As before, every weapon in the game is obviously well-optimized and conducts itself realistically during combat.
Multiplayer features 9 new multiplayer levels including the Monastery at Monte Cassino, the streets of Messina, and Anzio Beach and brand new multiplayer Liberation Mode in which defeated players become POWs. In this mode, defeated players must be rescued by surviving teammates to continue the fight. Breakthrough also features popular Tug-of-War and Objective modes.
I really enjoyed the original
MoH: Allied
Assault (89%), and to a lesser degree,
Spearhead
(75%). Unfortunately, this second expansion suffers the same problems many 3rd
installments usually do, it copies from the previous two and believes more is
better.
Overall, Breakthrough is not a new game it's the same game with more levels and some new add-ons. In other word, Breakthrough is another typical EA entry, but this time it truly showed who was behind the game. Right, you still have the MoHAA feel, but let's face it EA is cashing on sequels that are very much minimalist, such a life. Those of you who are merely casual fans of the game, wait until it's under $20. If you're a huge/hard-core fan of the series, you will probably buy it anyway :) If you don't have money right now, wait and pick up Call of Duty (from the makers of Medal of Honor) in November 2003. Here is a playable multiplayer demo (205MB) for MoH: Breakthrough.
System Requirements:
WinAll (except WinNT), Previous installation of Medal of Honor Allied Assault, 733 MHz Intel Pentium III or 700 MHz AMD Athlon processor (1GHz recommended), 128 MB RAM, 8x CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive, 800 MB HDD free plus space for saved games (additional space required for Windows swap-file and DirectX 8.0 installation), 16 MB (32MB recommended) OpenGL capable video card using an NVIDIA GeForce, ATI Radeon, NVIDIA Riva TNT2, ATI Rage 128 or PowerVR3 Kyro II chipset with OpenGL and DirectX 8.0 compatible driver, DirectX 8.0 compatible sound card, Keyboard, Mouse
*The following 16MB or greater 3D accelerators are not fully supported and do not work properly with the game: 3Dfx Voodoo 3/4/5 (no intro movies play+various textures are corrupted), 3Dfx Voodoo Banshee cards, Matrox G400 and G450 (Frame rate is often below 10FPS even at the lowest video settings), Nvidia Vanta (too slow).
snd: 4/5 - the same as MoH = pretty good, sounds and soundtracks are superb, some new soldier voices - great voice acting gfx: 3/5 -
the same as MoH, now a little bit dated - Quake 3 engine is showing its age, new soldier models, skins including American, British, Italian troops, many clipping errors, poorly designed levels playability: 3/5 -
good, at times very atmospheric, too short single player, well done multiplayers maps with the "liberation" mode, fair amount of bugs especially in the enemy troops
genre: first-person shooter release: September 2003 developer: TKO Software publisher: EA Games
| Overall: 65% |

Shorty | posted - Oct, 06 2003 - 14:28 | EA HAVE made a lot of great games.
Ok. They are crazy for money, but EA has not developed MOHAA.
They are just distributing it.
Omaha was a good map, yeah.
But the atmosphere in the MOHAA games is awsome.
It's always something new happening, and it's great fun while ur playing it.
MOHAA is maybe gona be replaced by CS in CPL next year. That means it IS quite good. We'll see. I've talked with an EA producer, and MOH 2 is gona be announced soon he said.
So. This is not the last we see from MOH. :-)

Major Disaster | posted - Oct, 06 2003 - 16:15 | I think they're beating the current theme to death!! It woulda been better if they woulda released a Pacific theater game instead!! MOHAA has been a great game thats time has come. I think it will take a back seat when Call of Duty is released!! |

da_n00b_king | posted - Oct, 06 2003 - 17:06 | xxxxx -- of course u stopped buying anything mohaa after spearhead -- there hasn't been anything SINCE spearhead! |
|
xxxxx | posted - Oct, 06 2003 - 17:09 | i meant, i wont be buying anything else after i bought spearhead, there's nothing new and there wont be. Call of Duty as user has said will be MOHAA's death. But then what is Call of Duty? A improved version that brings nothing new to the table. But I loved how people all freaked out on the 'Single Player' demo which says ZERO about the 'multiplayer'. Then I wonder, how long to finish the 'Single Player' portion? 12 hours! Wooo! I'm sick of anything even remotely similar to MOHAA. |

da_n00b_king | posted - Oct, 06 2003 - 17:14 | xxxxx - i dont believe u replied this within 3mins of me posting... u need to get out more boy. :D To be honest, i kinda agree with CoD, however, all WW2 games are going to be similiar due to their identical environments. Liberation mode is the only good new feature (except when u're on a server full of n00bs who cant find the switch). well, i'm off to TK some teammates and spawn camp! laterz |

JSolo | posted - Oct, 06 2003 - 19:10 | Hm.. I could never get past the first level. The game would just dump be back into the main screen. Any attempts at loading a map via the console would crash my machine. From the looks on the EA forums for this game, I am not the only person experiencing this issue. If you are going to buy this game, you might want to hold out for the patch (if they even release one!). Obviously, Hx got past the first level, or else he would not have been able to take the screen shots he did. I would think his case is the norm rather than the exception. |
|
hx | posted - Oct, 06 2003 - 21:07 | jsolo: yeah the first level really worked for me though I encountered several annoying clipping errors. |

| posted - Oct, 06 2003 - 21:10 | Just download the stuff and play it, its good fun, and save ur money for call of duty. BTW i hate the mohaa multiplayer, the FREE wolfenstein mp rocks its so much fun |
|
Stumpus | posted - Oct, 06 2003 - 21:12 | I just loved the Basil Fawlty 'minister of funny walks' that the AI did in the original MOH.
The constant scripted respawning was what totaly killed it off for me -oh and the camping snipers in MP...ZZZZZZzzzzz.
More fun to be had in RTCW:ET and it's **FREE** |

JESUS | posted - Oct, 07 2003 - 02:02 | I would have have bought it, say if they went all-out nuts and put like 50 multiplayer maps ONLY and priced it 9.99$. In any case, *YAWN* |

Jeff Johnson | posted - Oct, 07 2003 - 20:57 | BTW, haven't you people try the new battlefield 1942 expansion pack BF 1942: Secret Weapons Of World War 2, because it a hot-Ass game and in some way it very similar to MOAB BUT BETTER. |
|
JSolo | posted - Oct, 08 2003 - 00:27 | I actually am enjoying Breakthrough moreso than Spearhead. The only part of Spearhead I enjoyed was the beginning where you get dropped behind enemy lines. After that, it got really bad quickly. |
|
xxxxx | posted - Oct, 08 2003 - 16:07 | Secret Weapons is a great game, have to agree, wish it was the 'original' release. But BF is a complete pig on resources. Call of Duty.. I ain't interested. First of all its the original shmucks who did MOHAA and deserted it because of a hissy fit with EA and then lo and behold the originality of their next release, a MOHAA with the same level of graphics, more eye candy. Take screenshots and compare, the models are almost identical.. Call of Duty is what MOHAA was promised to be.. |
|
JSolo | posted - Oct, 08 2003 - 19:59 | But MOHAA was not bad and if it can be improved upon, there should be theoretically nothing wrong with the game. |
|
xxx | posted - Oct, 08 2003 - 22:04 | Call of Duty comes out, kiss goodbye to the population of MOHAA. After all Call of Duty is MOHAA. Just a different name. MOHAA was and is a piece of junk. So if you can handle the fact that internally the team that is developing Call of Duty is the original team that did MOHAA, then go get it when it's out. |
|
Spaz | posted - Oct, 09 2003 - 02:11 | I like the new game? It's nifty keeno cool. |

kicker (still playin | posted - Oct, 09 2003 - 07:24 | man wth, why u guys all dumping on mohaa that game is awesome, now SH and BK is a freakin bad game. Just a mistake cause EA is not smart, just greedy. the guys that developed MOH:AA did a great job (except for making it hard to mod) CoD is obviosly like MOH:AA cause its WWII its just goin to kick ass more and be a lot more fast paced, it will rock or maybe u guys posting here just suck xxxxxxxx or whatever the hell ur name is |
|
Dude | posted - Oct, 09 2003 - 07:26 | some of u guys are way behind! Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault is way under production, not sure how good its going to be, but i consider that MOH SH and BK are not MOH they are just bad, theres only so much of a good thing, until it turns into a bad thing ex. Spearhead! |
|
Stunner | posted - Oct, 09 2003 - 08:01 | what a waste of 29 bucks.... the single player is even shorter than Spearhead . Can't even get the multi player to work! !! ! ! ! ! Wait for CALL OF DUTY , enough is enough . . . multiplayer is still great on spearhead and allied assult though . |
|
Erboz | posted - Oct, 09 2003 - 08:57 | I personally enjoyed the game, It's one of the best created game, either graphically or atmospherically, the only real irritating thing is the ever returning pro-American propaganda these games pump at unaware people. |
|
ambazador | posted - Oct, 09 2003 - 10:28 | hahahaha, Erboz u are game player, itz not bad game, i like it too!!!but, shooting SS in partisan skin from Russia is not too much funky like Marshall Johnes Barney Thomas Elliot Harrison Ford, vivat. |
|
xxxxx | posted - Oct, 09 2003 - 20:40 | let me guess, you don't have any money to afford other games. most people i know playing MOHAA are either poor or not into gaming.. MOHAA has so many bloody cheats for it it's the closest competitor for CS cheating. Only people I know who still play mohaa are n00bs. |
|
JSolo | posted - Oct, 10 2003 - 07:32 | I think if you could play the Russians in MOHAA, it would kick ass - something it sounds like Call of Duty is going to let you do. Sooo Running With Scissors thought they were pretty hardcore by letting you kill random people in Postal 2. But I think that if they really, really wanted to offend people, they would make a game where you could play a Nazi and take out the Americans, etc. I don't think it would have a big market, but oh how it would get them headlines and notoriety. The Nazis are very obvious bad guys and it's okay to kill them in games. But having things flipped around - that would really piss people off. |
|
L.A | posted - Oct, 10 2003 - 11:21 | MOHAA is the only game i can definitly seized my fingers up ! its not just the erractic, no stop gameplay on MP but the quick respawning and getting NADED, BAZOOKED, SNIPED and BUCKSHOTTED 2 death before you can move on overpopulated confined maps :P..... Does anyone else suffer from HAND SEIZURE while playin MOHAA ? no not the other sort :O |

|
Jasper Russell | posted - Oct, 29 2003 - 06:54 | Spearhead and Breakthrough are Expansions - not new games so I'm not sure why people are judging them as such. I'm a bit dissapointed by no drivable vehicles in multiplayer of breakthrough. As to BF1942, they may both be ww2 but the gameplay is totally different. BF1942 is longrange, MOH is shortrange fighting, much more personal :) Give me MOH over UT2003 or Halo any day. Those games might as well have Mario running around. |
