I've always scratched my head why CPUs don't have 64 register to begin with. I mean, I know they traditionally doubled with each architecture upgrade, but technically, it would have quadrupled, too.
If we had 64, we could pretty much pass any parameter and return value through registers and we would never need to use the stack to save register values. This would be important because each function call starts with saving state and ends with restoring state - a whole bunch of read/write operations that produce nothing useful.
Lets see. Your shiny x64 Intel CPU has 16 physical registers.
You can't make this magically 32, the hardware limitation will always be there. I'll believe it when I see it
MS might be doing something undocumented with Intel - which, is not really magic, they are probably reusing something that was already there laying dormant; that would of course mean that anybody else could do it, not just MS and not just Windows 11. I am guessing that's what's going on, otherwise Linus would have updated the Linux kernel to crank the maximum performance out from these systems.
Anyhow. I am sure you saw the recent news about the collapse of the PC market, so you would know people won't be rushing to buy hardware any soon - and with that, MS will have no choice but to extend Windows 10 even longer. Thank you AI-buddies for all that! |
