Pete Hines made a post on the official Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion message board explaining why the RPG, originally scheduled for a December release, got pushed back to the first quarter of 2006:

Ive been playing Morrowind lately, and holy crap what a good game it is.
Oblivion from what ive seen should take RPGs to the next level.
