Valve has updated their source engine to enable something called High Dynamic Range, and the first two applications to implement this are Day of Defeat (a popular Half life 2 mod) and the upcoming new level for Half life 2: the Lost Coast. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about

Save u all the time. HDR from Valve is over rated. HDR doesn't make it look any better. As far as I'm concerned, their HDR implementation has got zero to increase interest in HL2. HL2, as was predicted a long time ago by someone 'too little too late'. That's HL2 demise. It's engine is not superior to anyone elses, their gfx are not superior to anyone elses and they still AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, have serious netcode issues and problems supporting their games. Take a look at Call of Duty 2. NOW there's a company who knows what a REAL Part 2 is. Totally mind blowing gfx, physics, smoke, lights etc! It's all done amazingly in the Call of Duty 2 game. Get it, don't listen to your friends. You have to see it to believe it. And when you see it, your expectations towards other games is going to grow emmensely because now you see with your OWN eyes what your video card can really do. And for that matter, check out F.E.A.R. Don't get caught in the marketing of HL2 and the 'fixed' intereviews. Go for a game you will get support with and get with a game with great graphics not subpar. People can say what they want about Day of Defeat, but it doesn't hold a candle to Call of Duty 2. It's not even close.
some friend of mine said his friend said Call of Duty 2 was pretty. Well good thing I didn't take that to heart and downloaded the 600MB demo.. God almighty it kicks serious ass in the gfx dept. Goodbye Welfare HL2. I'm now a devoted FEAR and COD 2 player. |

I saw a few trailers with HDR enabled and I wouldn't say it doesn't look ANY better with it. It certainly does look better, but not enough to impress everyone. It's obvious HL2 engine is becoming old, but with HDR on you don't notice it as often.
No objection on FEAR and COD2 will be kick-ass games. They'll be great in every aspect, especially in the visual department. |

Wow, that's underwhelming.
As for FEAR, it looked fine but played like every other linear FPS before it. Apart from the trick with the girl popping out, the demo was no more interesting than, say, Outbreak five years ago. The future is open-ended gameplay: games like STALKER and Oblivion. The rest is just rehashes. |
