What was well done? There is no innovation whatsoever, just cramming more of the same thing on the silicon.
I would not call a 16-pin power connector innovation at least.
All they should need are just three pins: ground, negative an positive.
So, I see that 16pin design as a drawback; it simply breaks compatibility for no good reason.

this is certainly not progress, but a regress.
