I know I took a vacation from bad talking ATI.. well, being that I am somewhat fortunate that I can get ATI stuff rather cheap. I got a X800 XL to replace my 9700 (flashed to Pro) vid card. Well I got the X800 XL that fits in my existing AGP slot. nVidia I was looking at the 6800 Ultra but with the savings on the X800 it was a easy choice to deal with the crap drivers of ATI than spend quite a few more bucks on nVidia. The one thing I hate about these ATI drivers is that new BLOATWARE control panel! What is ATI doing? Trying to compete with nVidia's control panel? Sigh.. what a waste of time the CCC is. You turn on video preview in the options and watch ur process jump 400MB. Insane.

I still continue to have the problems all the LYING ATI COMMUNITY didn't back me up on. You know, computer boots up and CCC doesn't detect your card!? Well well, new video card, X800 right, funny it can't detect it too. Oh but I was told it was my 9700 and upgrade. Well if I could punch the arsehole at ATI for lying to me, I would. (Sure you can restart runtime, which furthers my belief ATI just can't fix their own problem that's why there is an 'override', not the point, software should work and detect its own damn hardware.) So anyhow when I go to my buddies place with a 9800 Pro, he has SAME problem. If anything is really bad about ATI its their 'dumb as a stump' community. They know there's issues and nobody has the balls to stand up and say "oh i got the same problem".

Never had that problem EVER in nVidia land.. Ah well, just re-installed system from scratch yesterday (yes, no card detected) and problems with CCC again... no surprise. At least after a following reboot a miracle happened and the CCC worked right away.

Well I hope this card lasts me for a little while.. other than a few fan issues with the card, it's working decently. 5.5 is what I'm running now and really I don't believe 5.6 is gonna give me much more. It's all BS with the added speed. I've never seen any substantial gains in ATI drivers since 3.2...I guess with a 'dumb as a stump' community they'd swallow any BS from ATI...

While I probably wouldn't have put it quite as acerbically as "xxxx", I must say that I also stay as far as possible from ATI's products. After bad experiences with two separate models of vid card, I swore off of them until such a time as they can unfuck themselves. I don't need the frustration of hardware problems and poorly-coded drivers to make my life more difficult. I'll stick with Nvidia for the forseeable future.

Didn’t have any problems with the 9800 Pro but since I bought the X800 XT nothing but driver problems, that alone would make me want to move back to nVIDIA but the added lies of ATI & VALVe for the source engine make me laugh bitterly.

The most blatant being Pixel Shader 3.0 support with the new “Lost Coast level” for HL2.

Notice they used to be called the ATI levels and were being designed to showcase how far they can go with the technology so how did that meeting go a VALVe HQ

Tech:
Small problem with the ATI levels Gabe, they can’t run with the X8** series of cards let alone the 98** that was advised as the card to have.

Gabe:
Whoops, best call it “The Lost Coast” instead due to the fact everyone we told to buy an ATI card can’t run them especially those people that bought the bundle Game/Card packs. *Chortling as sauntering off to the bank*

Sorry to rant but that’s two companies I will not trust in any way again.

well when u can get any ATI card for $200, hehehe, why not. The latest was the X800 XL. I had planned to get 6800's... but they don't cost $200..

Aside from driver detection problems. The card is working fine in games. Apparently when I got it it was just just released since I have the AGP version of the X800 XL.

Trust Valve? WTF would trust Valve??!! Much less ATI or nVidia... lol If Lombardi isn't lying his ass off, you can be guaranteed Gabe (i love eating and eating and eating) is gonna F u up the arse.

the great fun now for ATI and nVidia is how to soak customers on:
PCI Express
Dual GPU Cards
SLI configs

Watch how they milk this for the next few years. I think ATI is on the right track though with dual GPU cards, that has to lower the prices more than nVidia's buy 2 of our (max life 6month) ripoff card choices...

But I tell ya, this bloody X800 XL is like that 3dfx 6000 card.. if you remember that cards's size.. LOL! It's F'ing huge!

After playing GTA San Andreas on the PC with my older ati drivers everything ran ok, now with the latest drivers the game crashes every 30mins.

After a black screen and 1min of freezed sound effect and alt tabbing, esc, breaking and the alt ctrl del method i finally get into taskmanager then windows and get a weird error message about the graphics card failed to respond.

This the first time i've had any problems with either card of drivers for the Radeon 9800 Pro, however i am definetly considering an Nvidia for my next upgrade.

GTA / ATI patch, i dont know for now im reverting back to the old drivers !
