I's surprised that it's not an expandable controller card.
Remember Gravis Ultrasound? You could swap the memory chips on the board to expand the memory.
Intel should make controller cards that accept DDR memory sized expansions; 20 slots should give you the size of a larger graphics card.
Then, I could decide what size of expansion card I want to invest in and buy 1 of them.
Later, buy another and another and another, and adding each expansion card would increase the capacity of the card. Removing cards would not be possible without destroying the data, but I could move all cards at once into another controller.
Controllers should come with flashable firmware to ensure forward-compatibility (so a controller I buy today would work with cards 100 times larger 5 years from now).
