There's no speed limit in Germany on the highways.

That woman has no beauty on her - and it's not her age.
BTW: I saw a 4TB HDD deal on NewEgg for 159CAD - a decent and attractive price. They advertise it as a "NAS" drive. Guess what: limit: 1/customer. How do you build a NAS if you can buy only 1??? Any sane person knows that for a NAS, you need at least 5 drives (if not 9 or 17). |

I use a Linux box that serves my network storage and media. NAS is just prettier. But FreeNAS I believe only need 2 HD minimum. |

That is, if you use RAID 0 or RAID 1 - which means you care about speed only and you don't care about data loss.
If you care about data loss, you go with RAID 5. RAID 5 requires at least 3 drives + 1 if you use a hot spare, which might be a good idea.
If you can't allow any data loss, you go with RAID 6. RAID 6 requires at least 4 drives+ 1 if you use a hot spare, which is not really needed.
Over the years, I have accumulated tons of family photos and HD videos and there's more to come. For family stuff, data loss is out of the question as these cannot be replaced - hence I have RAID 6. I'd need to buy 8 identical drives to do an upgrade. That's 7 drives short of the NewEgg offer. |
