An interesting article on CNN claims that console gaming is dying:
If console gaming were a first-person shooter, it would be taking heavy fire right now. A red hue would envelop the viewable screen from all sides, an ominous sign of spilled blood.
Or worse, near-death.

It does seem little cry wolf imo. If you've played one game you've played them all. That seems like an apt description when you're talking about social media games and mobile games. Consoles are better in that regard but they do suffer similar problems. It's quite possible that the market is just righting itself and belongs about where it's at. There are quite a few other details that could be getting in the way like lack of progress or innovation and even an over abundance of integration. There are problems even on PC where you have services like steam which is nice but you don't technically own anything. The whole copyright and IP beast rears it's ugly head and seems to stifle every one.
Anyhoo not a huge deal I'll just read more books or find a better way even if illegal. |

Phone/Tablet gaming is killing every format, never mind consoles!

Who would have thought Diablo 3 would be the epitome of everything that is wrong with PC gaming.... |

I tend to agree with Wolverine. Alot of "experts" may have a stake in
what gets more airtime too . The PC, console, and mobile gaming tech all
have their places and niches. I figure the console has been acquired to its
critical mass and mobile tech is sharing in new buys. |

Dunno about dying.
Tablets will surely give a competition.
Playing a shooter on a console is already bad enough, on a tablet it's just plain baaad.
Tablets are IMHO just a hype, which will slowly cease.
NVidia is trying to make a business and probably they'll be ok for a year or two, but then we go back to using our PCs as before.
The difference might be that at that time, we will plug our tablets into a placeholder at home, providing all the peripherals (much like we plug laptops into docking stations today except this time you carry only the display with you). |

I see two reasons for consoles "dying" (I mean selling less).
Companies want to profit from sales. Consumers want better and cheaper games.
How old are this generation's consoles? +6 years. What about tablets and smartphones? iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch are selling hundreds of millions. You buy such device for many uses AND you're able to play thousands and thousands of games for a single dollar each. Games certainly are not as polish as the consoles one but could be as entertaining AND you can play it anywhere.
It's hard times for console companies but it's a transition time. I wish an "open source" console like the OUYA (vaporware in IMHO) with decent graphics. They could upgrade every year like Apple does to its devices. That company could make money by selling the console and indie developers could create games for it making money like they do on the App Store. |

lol. Console sales are down. Imagine that after 4+ years of same consoles being on the market. Weird. Oh wait, everyone who wanted a console got one already and is unlikely to buy the same one twice. Hell, even PS3 fanbois got xbox360 by now, and 360 fanbois got PS3s.... |

This is how you make money. On the BS detector it would be: "leverage existing technology". No R&D costs, no investments to be made. You just keep selling the same sh..thing. |
