Good news, Everyone! Team Fortress 2 is now free-to-play.
Valve, creators of bestselling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), announced today that after four years and over 200 updates, its popular and critically-acclaimed o

Too late; I am no longer interested.
If you're trying to bring in players for your paying customers, it might work. But then again, there are better games out there.
You should have kicked the game off as free in the first place. |

tf2 a solely multiplayer game.. I almost choked laughing... I haven't bothered with tf2 in ages, especially after the whole collecting hat crap, achievement character unlocking shit, and then the stupid ass collecting part grind to build really crappy items. Some people find value you in that, for me its just boring and turns me off the game by principle, I'd probably still be playing it more often had it not being for all that shit.
| Quote: | | The interesting problem to solve is how to make those freeloaders produce value for our paying customers. Obviously, getting those free players into the game is the first step to doing that. |
I like how these valve scumbags refer to customers (potential inc.) and guinea pigs as freeloaders.. spending your time on their 4year old game, while running the steaming shite client producing value for them actually, including in the form of statistics etc.
So just remember freeloaders, you're valve guinea pigs, do you want to be helping them.
I'm still curious about the Dota2 clone being free to play or upfront payment, and then also the same micro-transactions.. wouldn't put it past valve to try both. |

Well it almost was really as it was bundled with other valve games.. but valve are the biggest fucking freeloaders!
Practically everything that has made them what they are now was freeloading off the backs of others who made decent shit and mods, adding value for their game half life! half life 2 along with the steaming shite client which replaced WON the authentication checker, back in the day when a cdkey check was about the only hassle to playing online. Where you could get updates yourself and not be forced to apply them if weren't interested and had no intention of playing online on servers that had updated.. now its designed around fucking noobs, and you're forced to update before you can play.
So anyway when they come out and try to make a big thing about releasing a game for free, they really aren't doing this out of the goodness of their stone dead hearts, its pure business, marketing and gathering data, plain and simple. They aren't risking anything here other than a slight bandwidth increase, as they've already saturated their main market of gamers who bought it. Obviously sales of the game including micro transactions and players are dying down so they need to freshen it up. |

I guess they got wakeup call when they saw league of legends tournament last week had almost a million viewers on the stream and over 2 million players worldwide (and rising) and the game is free...
@koogle:
game was bundled into an 80$ box containing portal (one hour game), tf and hl2 + episodes. Thank you but no thank you. |

Only thanks to team CLG and their member HotshotGG imo (easily explained with video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzEVLxywLYQ )... making a big point about Riot's handling of the qualifier seedings... I know I was watching their reorganized match against EG to see if they would win.. and that was the first new record number of viewers for an eSport event. I lol'd at how Riot commented on it and didn't want to admit it was only because of HotshotGG coming out and damning Riot. Followed by the CLG vs RS which had like 69k viewers.. and then the dreamhack stuff.. had it not being for the big drama though, I doubt it would have had as many people's attention for the dreamhack tournament.
Sadly though lol has reached higher numbers faster than Riot can update their server framework.. especially Europe as its constantly fucked with busy waiting periods, mainly weekends and after schools out. |

I know all this but I didn't see fit to put all this into a casual topic about valve and their steam-ing pile of shit Anyway, good that you had time to wtite all this info for others who may be interested. I myself didn't watch the tournament (I did watch some videos later), I tried once or twice in the afternoons (GMT+1) but there was nothing on.
AS for Riot, I didn't say that Riot is good, actually they are pretty crappy company doing even crappier job of maintaining their servers etc. I am glad I didn't spend a dime on LoL because I could not forgive myself rewarding such a shoddy work that only USA company can do and still live another day. If Riot were serious they would have fired bunch of people by now for incompetence, including Phreak among others. His commentary alone is enough to get fired without any positive references. And the guys that do artwork, maintain servers etc. should either be bitchslaped or should get reinforcements.
Every time I try to login to EU servers I get at least 30 min wait time, in the afternoon I get like 2hrs #$^@#$%& Do they think we are idiots like apple fans to stand in line for hours?! I waited 20 mins today and in the end I got "server is busy". Fuck that shit. I'll play LoL again when I try to login and see zero wait time. I am going to play HoN again until then. |

A popular game online, an actual authentic popular game on PC and you trash it. Wow man you guys are really fucking out to lunch.
What did I say about the PC community, they are all a bunch of fuck ups who don't know jack shit.
I'm no big supporter of Valve or anything they do but to release a game such as this for 'free to play' I think that is a good move by them. It's a well supported game with a huge community, probably one of the biggest communities of all PC games and it's not modern warfare repeat shit like COD or BF. The team play in TF2 is also better than most other games and fun too. Lots and lots of achievement awards too. I was thinking they'd make HL2 DM free or some stupid shit like that but they actually picked a good title to make free. Good for them. I bought Bulletstorm because it was cheap, know how many are playing that game online? ZERO. That's PC, shit, I will likely just buy console at least when you do, maybe not best controls but that IS where everyone is playing and you are guaranteed almost any game has a good size community online. PC cannot deliver on that front unless it's some BS modern warfare garbage. Even RTS are starting to die out online on PC. It's clear that PC is dying or just stuck in a rut with shit repetitive games. Even that Rage game, I'll probaby get that on console because I'm too afraid on PC the online portion will be shit.
All in all, good job Valve. It was a good choice.
Seriously what's the point talking any sense to you guys. I think you're out to lunch and I think most anyone who reads your posts can figure that out on their own pretty quickly. |

I trash the company for their lousy work lately, not the game itself. I am certainly not going to say "thank you Riot, GJ, I love waiting in queue for two hours, I love that shop is broken two times a day, and thank you very much for server crashes every second day - I am thankful to you for giving me a chance to drop out in the middle of the game and do something else while your automatic punishment system records me as a leaver" or do I Tom?
when someone serves me shit instead of a steak, I don't care how good the restaurant is, he served me shit, he deserves shit in return.
PS. If you were thinking about trashing Valve, not Riot, then you can disregard what I have wrote above. The only good thing Valve made in last 15 years is Half-Life 1. (They bought Portal) |

I'm not trashing the game or Riot per se Tom .... I don't think they do a bad job on the game characters and art at all, though balancing is another topic, public games are a lot different from competitive, most players who play it casually are going to be annoyed by gameplay changes that based around competitive league matches with teams who actually communicate teamwise. And certainly the game engine and the adobe client have plenty room for improvement and especially the client is a problem in the way its been designed.. for a start their is zero fucking caching for things that really could be cached like browsing the shop (its really odd when there whole sales model is based around getting micro transaction sales). They really need a complete overhaul of certain things, but I'm sure they are getting onto the server load problems with mainly Europe, they seem to have neglected it over this dreamhack event.
I'm just having a what I consider balanced and valid opinion on things Tom ... obviously their game has gotten popular and they haven't been able to keep up with demand.. Its a good thing for them, as it is a free to play game and not everyone is going to spend on it. I mean people say its a free to play game, even gx-x said it here and others will go try it out increasing the server load lol
| Quote: | | I am thankful to you for giving me a chance to drop out in the middle of the game and do something else while your automatic punishment system records me as a leaver" |
yeah, I got leaver ban for a game that never even started up because it left everyone for the match at the character selection lol. While telling us all the "game is starting..." not that you could actually connect.
And don't even get me started on their tribunal garbage, its actually just making more people just be pathetic.. Not to mention Riot are friggin hypocrites along with their twisted legal garbage! There is nothing justice about it, anyway its just a decent dota clone that I like and support currently but's its not without issues that need to be addressed.
| Quote: | | Good for them. I bought Bulletstorm because it was cheap, know how many are playing that game online? ZERO. That's PC, shit |
No Tom, that is because the game is what .. a bit shit? Perhaps you missed that it was made by Epic, they haven't made a decent pc game let alone a multiplayer game since UT2k4 (I don't count UT3), since its been console oriented carp ever since. Including their neglect of the PC multiplayer and modding for their games. Don't blame pc gamers attitudes, for developer and publishers greed, neglect and just all round idiocy..they've cashed in, that is short sighted but its all that matters to them. Maybe more people will realize that 4months after release these types of games will be fucking dead simply because of the developers/publishers mindset! And p2p multiplayer works for consoles, not for pc gamers who traditionally like to play on dedicated servers.
I mean I'll just quote this as it explains bulletstorm for the pc perfectly
| Quote: | | Unfortunately, they put absolutely ZERO effort into the PC version. ZERO. It looks and runs beautiful but it clearly has a massive console-cock up its butt. The menus are horrible, for no reason whatsoever Game for winows live injects its bullshit into the steam version making everything overly complicated, the mouse smoothing/acceleration feels janky, the FOV is locked down, there are no dedicated servers, there is NO IN GAME CHAT (WTF is people/epic/ea not having a brain? or regular stupid? or perhaps their programmers/ui designers don't actually play games and put effort into their work but rather rely on sort of randomly hitting the keyboard until code comes out), no editor. Occassionally you hear someone's voice, tinny squeaky and quiet come out of nowhere with no indication who is talking but no one knows why. |
hehe
| Quote: | | I was thinking they'd make HL2 DM free or some stupid shit like that but they actually picked a good title to make free. |
yes TF2 is a good game, and it will surely make a good free to play title.. I probably will play it sometime in the next month or 2.. maybe if I can be bothered to go through the game updates for it. I might just lose interest before then.
| Quote: | | Even RTS are starting to die out online on PC |
Sad but true.. a few days ago I was trying to think of decent RTS game to play, I totally forgotten about SC2, but that was all that came to mind in the end.. EA totally sucked the life out of C&C and destroyed it... even ended Lotr BFME2... all round sad really. Dawn of war hmmm :/ |

| The only thing I buy in the review or whatever that is you posted about Bulletstorm is the browser or lack of a browser is shit. The game itself runs excellent on my system. Mouse jerky? Huh?! Not at all. It's not consolized in my eyes, just a very stupid gui for joining servers. It would have been nice to have a DM or TDM too. Doesn't seem to be options. Other than that its a fun game. |
