Sony\'s CFO Masaru Kato commented, \'It is no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3.\'
Sony\'s PS3 was pretty slow out of the gate with its $599 price tag, but Sony had little choice in terms of pricing due to the heavy costs surrounding Blu-ray and the Cell processor. The

| TL;DR - Blue Ray sells no where near their expectations and that was one of the main goals of PS3 - to win the format war. And it did that with sheer numbers of sold PS3 units, while in the same time Toshiba sold regular players. today, figures show that initial growth of blue ray sales (read PS3 consumers initially bought some BR movies) was just that - initial. Today, majority of people have no desire what-so-ever to own a BR player and BR is going down the drain as far as sony is concerned (as an investment it fails to be even 10% of that of VHS). |

Another i-d-i-o-t. Ya it was a format war. You can get a bluray for $50 now you i-d-i-o-t. Going down the drain eh? Ya that's why my video store almost has more bluray than dvd. What you go to the same i-d-i-o-t school as tride? ffs.
And what the fuck is with the word censor, so fuck is ok but i-d-i-o-t isn't? Makes real sense. |

I am yet to meet a person that has a BR player, I don't think I will meet a person with BR burner.
My local super market has more kinds of books for sale than toilet paper. I guess people buy more books. |

Every high end home cinema system is blu ray / blu ray 3D.
Not knowing someone that doesn't have BD system isn't exactly accurate in your sweeping statement.
All new high end laptops also have BD as standard and naturaly several MILLION PS3 owners have it out the box.
For the record i have 4 in various formats and yes they are cheap as a dvd player but for a start you can't watch 3D movies on any 3D tv without a 3D BD player. Plus what is the point of owning a full HD TV if you can't watch HD movies in 1920x1080P?? BD is the only format that allows that. HD on xbox and the old rival to BD has been dead for years!!!

LOL, ok then.
It's pretty clear here that some of us here have absolutely no clue what quality BR brings to the table. A DVD doesn't even hold a candle to the quality of picture of BR. Then the media is also scratch resistent. I don't know what the heck they make BR out of but none of my collection has suffered any scratches and with little kids around the house swapping them in and out of the BR and my htpc it's pretty amazing. I haven't touched a DVD for movies since I got my PS3 really. |

Rubbish I don't own a Blu-Ray player but I can watch HD movies through my XBox streamed from my PC and honestly there are only a few movies that HD really improves (a lot of the older re-releases are just upscaled) for example how many comedy's or romance flicks are improved in HD? none that I can think of even the likes of drama's and some thrillers are not really much better in HD. The ones that do stand out are often the effect heavy movies and animated films both of which I have to agree benefit greatly. I know a lot of people with PS3's that still don't own Blu-Ray movies for them "why" I hear you cry, well because they are the same sort of people that don't buy DVD's.
Me I will a Blu-Ray player eventually I guess but probably not a SONY one and definitely not a PS3.
Also can't believe the whole PSN is still not up I just assumed it all came back. I lost connection to XBox live for 30 minutes yesterday and that pissed me off but 30 days and still not fully up is bad going. |

Wait a minute here, we're not talking compressed streaming in BASIC HD entry format of 720P on a poor mans home cinema ie an Xbox or PS3.
Like i have that too with my PS3 BUT i also have FULL 3D with 60fps per eye and a 600Hz panel AND a 1000Watt RMS 7.1 3D home cinema with lossless audio -as per the director intended.
I believed that my PS3 in 720P was shit hot for ages until i seen what 1080P AND 3D was, and boy was i embarrassed to have blown 720P trumpet...
Speaking from OWNING the said equipment, NOTHING compares to true FULL HD/3D on top spec equipment.
Thing is you can buy 1080P on just about any shitty TV. Doesn't make it right though. Watch HD/3D on a top end LCD in comparrison to top end a Plasma and then you see what i'm talking about?
200Hz vs 600Hz subfield and now we're cooking! I can see flicker with a 3,000 buck LCD but not on an 1,800 buck NEO plasma in 3D
Granted on an XBox/PS3, 720P can look good, sometimes... -i have a 23" LG full 1080P which i play the majority of the time on but once you've played and seen what 1080P really looks like in comparrison...it's no contest. My Panasonic Viera 46" in terms of viewing TODAYS films; Avatar,Cloudy with Meatballs,Ice Age 3 etc, etc. in 3D or 1080P
TRUE 1920x1080P with ORIGINAL uncompressed 7.1 HD audio is why -if you opened your eyes and experienced it- Home cinema systems retail for THOUSANDS of bucks.
If 720P was wonderfull why broadcast 1080P? or as in Japan they are trialing UHDTV, Ultra HDTV, 4320p
That's about as much as i will say on the matter.
I don't care about upscaled remade movies that are sold or broadcast in supposed HD. I'm talking genuine 2010/11 made BD filmed inc audio and/or 3D that i buy or rent -at the moment i can rent ALL BD films,3D and games that i want that are viewed in 24P (or 24fps) |
