Heise Online reports that Gabe Newell, president of Valve Software, said in an interview that Microsoft made a terrible mistake releasing DirectX 10 for Vista only and excluding Windows XP. He said this decision affected the whole industry as so far only a very small percentage of players can use DirectX 10.

| The Iron is hot right now for Apple to 100% usurp Microsofts power hold on the industry where gaming is concerned. The Gestapo approach to new tech that Microsoft uses is pissing people off. they try to pigeon-hole people into buying their products. direct x 10 is a prime example. this is so lame. people are already buying their products! Unfortunately, Apple is worse. For they are micro-controllers over what you can and cannot do on their systems. For this reason, I dont think they will ever take advantage of this flawin microsoft so i guess its just wishful thinking. I am so sick of the corporate involvement in the Gaming industry. all people want to do is play games and have a good time and they consistently get in the way. its like asking your mom to go out and play baseball with the boys and she says you can only go if you take your 3year old brother with you. and he has to play too.... a total drag.... |

He is spot on. I wonder if they are beginning to realize that it's not a holding move to make technologies, which are ultimately aimed to improve the gaming experience, in a sort of angry 3-year old child grasp.
They make great products, all of them, but this propertiery warfare going on is fracking things up.
I sure as hell understand why people and developers are turning to consoles. Apart from EVE and the occasional gems, I get my kicks from the boxes stacked under my TV. How much has changed in the last year or so...
I wonder what will happen as soon as the Asian market begin to break through... |

He is spot on however Microsoft likely doesn't care. DX10 is Microsoft's
leverage on gamers to buy Vista. Since its not officially downward
compatible, everyone (gamers and developers) HAS to upgrade.
I think people are much more tolerant of technology leaps when its
technology driven and not forced marketing by a monopoly. |
