A working browser project at 56k.rip (https://56k.rip) recreates the full 1996 dial-up ritual: a fake desktop, Dial-Up Networking, the off-hook click, touch tones, and about twenty seconds of a real modem handshake.

Pick 14.4, 28.8 or 56k and the same page actually takes longer on the slower line, because every page is ...

Nicely done.
I miss the sound of the HDD seeks and clicks Wink

Remember, you could hear the HDD head park itself before the PC switches off Wink
You could even hear them spooling up.

Gone are the (literally) days of defragmentation. Ours used to be a complete all nighter and part of the morning to defrag a 640mb HDD. Watching those clusters getting picked up then rewritten into nice rows Laughing

Btw, Hex, we still have our US Robotics modem and manual originally 33.6 firmware upgraded to 56k

I miss the sound of mechanical hard drives, too Smile It had its own charm... but it’s true that even SSDs aren’t completely silent; under heavy load, they sometimes make pretty strange noises—the sound is caused by changes in the SSD’s energy states, which occur several thousand times per second.

I also upgraded my modem to 56k back in the day Smile It was crazy that when I bought it (basically the first significant amount of money I’d earned from my business), it cost as much here as the annual salary of an average working person.
