"This vocal minority oppose any eye-candy that might get in the way of holding a competitive edge." True, true. But don't worry: they can't live in their mothers' basements forever.

Adding graphical effects slows the game down for everyone playing, so if anything there will be niether a gain or loss. Unless I'm oversimplifying *shrugs*

Unless these effects are for everyone or those that don't support them have some other visual interferance these features mean dick squat. A good player or those wanting to look really good, are gonna turn all this BS eye candy off online. So you are disadvantaged and you don't have sunglasses. Valve only put the features in so they can market their game that much more.

After playing through the crop of recently released games I've actually been drawn back to play through HL2 again. Not many games have done that, perhaps CoD, MOHAA and RTCW. Garry's Mod is most excellent though.

If Valve is so interested in promoting their engine and effects though, why not release a full on machinima add on or expansion. Didn't epic encourage a similar promotion of their engine by doing a competition?

It would be nice to put these effects into movies and leave their insertion in games as pluses rather than "well it comes with the engine so lets do a whole level based on the effect".
