The Boy Who Stole Half-Life 2 - story - briefly
(hx) 01:13 AM CET - Feb,22 2011 - Post a comment / read (8)
Half-Life 2 was one of the most anticipated PC games of all time. However Valve's first person shooter sequel became the most infamous example of a pirated PC game in September 2003 when a German named Axel Gembe found a way to hack into Valve's servers and download the still incomplete source code for the game. Eurogamer has posted up a feature article that's mostly an interview with Gembe about how he got access to the Half-Life 2 source code. Here's an excerpt:
At 6:18am on 15th February 2004, Valve's MD received an email with a blank subject line from sender 'Da Guy'.  "Hello Gabe," the author began, before going on to claim responsibility for infiltrating Valve's network months earlier. Newell was unsure whether to believe the story at first. But two attached documents, both of which could only have been obtained by someone with access to private areas of Valve's server, proved the sender's claims were valid. Five months after Half-Life 2 was released onto the internet, long after all leads had gone cold, Newell's man had turned up on his doorstep.

Why did Gembe send that email? "Because I was sorry for what happened," he says. "I wanted them to know who did this thing, and that my intention was never for things to work out the way they did." But that wasn't all that Gembe was after. The young man saw a way he could create a positive outcome from his crime, both for Valve and himself. In a separate email, he asked if Newell would consider giving him a job. "I was very naïve back then," he says. "It was and still is my dream to work for a game development company, so I just asked. I hoped that they could forgive what I had done, mostly because it wasn't intentional." To Gembe's surprise, Newell wrote back a few days later saying yes, Valve was interested. He asked if Gembe would agree to a phone interview.

The real motivation behind the suggestion was not to discover whether Gembe would be a strong candidate for a position within the company. It was to obtain an on-the-record admission from Gembe that he had been responsible for the leak. It's an old FBI trick, designed to gain a confession by appealing to a person's sense of pride. Gembe had his suspicions but he pushed them to the back of his mind. "I hoped for the best," he says. "I was not the brightest kid back then." He recalls the phone interview being conducted by Alfred Reynolds, developer on Counter-Strike and Steam, and Portal writer Erik Wolpaw, but says he could be wrong. (In fact, Wolpaw says he had yet to join the company at this point.) "At first they wanted to know how I hacked into the network. I told them in full detail. Then they asked me about my experience and skills. I still remember they were surprised that I spoke fluent English without much of an accent."

The trio talked for 40 minutes. Any sense of guilt dissipated for Gembe in the presence of his heroes. But that was nothing compared to the adrenaline rush he felt when he received an invitation to a second interview. This one would be face-to-face at Valve's headquarters in Seattle, on American soil.
Having set the trap, Valve and the FBI needed to obtain a visa for Gembe (and his father and brother, as he had asked if they could accompany him to the US). But there were concerns about the ongoing access Gembe had to Valve's servers and the potential damage he could still cause. So the FBI contacted the German police, alerting them to the plan.
Great article. A very interesting read!

So the moral of the story here is not to worry about pirating Valve games since they completely fail at overseas prosecution.

Koogle(03:10 AM CET - Feb,22 2011 )
He had is home raided by dumb scum officers... the kind of cretinous legally protected child porn viewing hypocrite shit heads who think they work for moral crusade of greater good in raiding people's homes and turning family lives upside down. They are sick hypocrite scumbags. Though in his early naivety he is lucky he never got on a plane to the USA, the courts would wreck his life completely... and their sick rationalizing mentality call it justice.

The only moral to this story is never let your ego get the better of you though, he thought too highly of a company that might value his skills, when all they wanted was victim to prosecute and message to send out to anyone else thinking of messing with the big corp shit heads and their security flaws, while big government policy enforcing retards helped with their flawed, biased and hypocritical legal bullshit are only to happy to get involved in international new world order type policing activities for more intercontinental relations, power and media brainwashing stories regarding said 'cyber' activities/attacks. It's nothing compared to what these morons get away with under the guise of law protection and national security.

p.ps Valve never suffered any loss of sales because of that leak, its pretty obvious, but they like all corporations with greed and power on the mind would love to have you believe their fairy tale fears .. it actually boosted the hype of hl2, and allowed them to start their Steaming shite platform. Which couldn't give a fuck about your consumers rights or privacy, you agree to their biased legal terms remember ;)

What exatly is the point of prosecuting this guy? He doesn't have money, he is not useful in jail, its just a big waste of time.

th4t1guy(06:31 AM CET - Feb,22 2011 )
And who is useful in jail? What's the point in prosecuting anyone? Oh yeah... Crime.

Well if you want to go philosophical who makes things a crime? People with opinions. Some think you should spend your life behind bars for weed, others think you should be on a sex offender registry for peeing on the side of the road, some think each song is worth $3000 and prosecute people in poverty for it.

Look past black and white... as an American citizen I sure as hell do not agree to paying for this guys meal for the next X years, I also don't agree to paying the FBI agents $999/Hour + administrative fees + flight tickets + food/expenses/hotel that were used throughout the sting.

Law is for your interpretation, at one point it was illegal to run away as a slave in the US and in northern states the jury would go against the law for the purpose of not returning a runaway slave to "its" master.

/AM rant.

There is no way the law is black and white, if it was, alot of people would be in prison now, alot of people get away with alot more then software piracy or hacking just because they have a metal badge.

Alot of law officers, no matter the kind tend to have a 'the ends justify the means' type of attitude.

So, i honestly have no faith in the law right now, its too screwed up, if you have enough money, you can pretty much get away with anything.

So many examples that you cant imagine. The law's are for the masses. Those who have the money and connections get away with anything - even genocides!

I am quite aware of that, i was just saying that is why i don't respect the law at all, i know there are some law officers that are indeed not corrupt, but not many.
