Half-life2 partial source leaked? - briefly
(hx) 11:02 PM CEST - Oct,02 2003 - Post a comment / read (14)
Various sources (EliteBastards, NVNews forum, Gamerswithjob.com, Steam forum, PlanetHalfLife, ArsTechnica)  is reporting there is the Half Life 2 source code floating around the net right now. The archive contains about 8000 files including the source code for all the weapons (an extinguisher?), NPC and vehicles. The shader engine code is included and much more.  It looks to be about a month old. There's no official word from Valve on the source code leak yet. Is it just a hoax or is it the real deal?
Update: A post to the Halflife2.net Forums by Gabe Newell finally has a comment on the leaked Half-Life 2 source code:
Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.

Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.

Here is what we know:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.

2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.

3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.

4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.

5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).

6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks.

What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, [email protected]. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.

We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

either it is true, but it is most probably free publicitiy. It would be mean that people will be looking around for the HL2 source code and when the game is out, they would be so pissed off about it, they will buy the game....or something like that. But i personally think they could have made the September 30th release, but ofcourse, they wanted more money..

Thanks to blooduk for posting the link for ya... but anyway ITS REAL, and there are two people that are at high risk for gabe to look for... atleast according to alot of people in halflife2 on efnet. One person called hitman8 and another from a usenet posting

HAHAHA .... this is ironic the way i looked at it Valve wanted to earn more by pushing the game back, but now it's leaked. I think they lost more than they earn. That's a lesson for treating us pc gamers crap and keep pushing and pushing

ouch source code leak? very bad, now many many exploits and cheats can be extremely easy to make. Also ppl can start making new games out of the engine.

blooduk: I got the link from IRC, but anyway tnx + it's real:) It seems we can expect many HL2 goodies soon. It's a shame for Valve. I cannot imagine they want do some anti-cheating, if they aren't able to protect their own sources.

I hope this leak will help other developers, soon we will see many more good games :D since a lot of the source code is revealed. WICKED SICK

"soon we will see many more good games" - if developers pays for the engine, the will be, if they not and build game, lawyers will rip them apart. why some people may have make money using stolen code? i see everybody here belive delays is beacuse money, not to make game better. if valve would release buggy game in time you people will curse on them for the buggs.

Many games are released bugged as hell, and later patches fix some bugs.. it has nothing to do with delaying a game. They have a dead-line, enough said. You can run but you cant hide.

Np hx ... hey hx do you think you will ever have gameguru forums? , just wondered :)

hxposted - Oct, 03 2003 - 16:53
BloodUK: Maybe one day :) Maybe you remember why I removed the forums from Gameguru last time...
However I plan many things including some download service.

hahahahahaha, what a loser. next time he should install the windows patches! Pay the price now Vivendi hahhaa... oh this game will be a hackers dream..At least it follows suit with the first HL and CS.. I look at this as payback from the community for them lying on the release date and taking their time to inform their so called valuable public. Pfff.
