Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
(hx) 08:05 PM CET - Jan,20 2004

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is role-playing game from Bioware, set in the Star Wars Universe, 4000 years before the events in the Episode 1. The story starts off shortly after the Republic has won a war against the Mandalorians. At some point during the war however, something twisted the two powerful young Jedi who led the Republic to victory. When they came back from the war, they returned not as saviours, but as conquerors at the helm of an unimaginably large Sith fleet. The game starts off with a jaw-dropping cutscene in classic Star Wars style, and leads straight into the action. The Republic is under attack from an unimaginably large fleet of Sith warships controlled by Darth Malak, and is helpless against such an overwhelming force. You play as a mysterious character who awakes on board a Republic ship being attacked and boarded by the Sith.

Since it was Bioware behind the design, it doesn't take a visionary to guess what the gameplay is like. The gameplay is basically a stripped down version of D&D. The battle interface is easy to understand and intuitive and is ideal for beginners and RPG veterans alike. KOTOR allows you to play a male or female in one of three base classes: soldier, scout, and scoundrel. These three basic classes roughly correspond to D&D's fighter, ranger, and rogue. If you are a scoundrel, you use stealth, mines, and talking. A soldier simply beats stuff up, and a scout uses both fighting and technological know-how. Later in the game you get to make the choice of your Jedi class - Guardian, Consular or a Sentinel. Of course, you can customise each character with a range of skills and feats and in the case of Jedis, Force Powers. As you gain experience and start to move up in level (maximum of 20 experience levels), you will be able to improve all your skills and add to your Force powers and combat feats. Skills allow you to do things like repair droids or break into security systems, with feats, you can do special moves in combat that make better use of particular weapon types. And finally, there's a wide range of Force Powers in the game, such as lightning, telekinetic kill, and choke.

The combat is rules-based, real-time and pretty dynamic, with the ability to pause the time and deal out commands to your party members (they will perform those actions based on their stats). Since you have a huge number of Force Powers, combat feats, weapons, and items to use in combat, in addition to the challenge of controlling a party of 3 characters, there is a ton of things to do during combat. I found the fights very enjoyable, particularly using Force powers as you really do get a feeling of your superiority as a Jedi. There are also three different mini-games that serve as fun interludes: Pazaak (simple collectible card game), Swoop Racing and Ebon Hawk Gunner (turret gun space battle). The controls have been completely revamped for the PC, and now use the keyboard-[WASD]/mouse combo that we have all come to know and like.

I really enjoyed finishing this game. This game is just awesome, definitely one of the best game released last year. The story is killer. I'm not hardcore Star Wars fan that has seen all the movies multiple times, but the story is probably better than both of the new movies. If you're looking for an RPG with good action and adventure elements, then pick this up as soon as possible. If you're a Star Wars fan then this is a must have.

Anyone know how this compares to Star Wars Galaxies from actual experience (not reviews)

JKposted - Jan, 22 2004 - 17:43
Well, SW:Galaxies = crap and, SW:Knights of the Old Republic = good

This is a typical console RPG Lite with standard fight features ported to PC. The graphics are by PC standards nothing spectacular and not nearly with as much depth as other PC games. Its a decent Star Wars game though but if you want a good solid RPG my advice is to look elsewhere.

GOTY. Not only the best Star Wars game ever, but one of the best RPG's ever. Right up there with Fallout and BG2.

magaposted - Jan, 23 2004 - 11:51
haha, right, GOTY. This game is GOTY because there are no worthy games around. I'd say this can't be compared to Falout and BG2, much less to THE RPG : Planescape Torment (story-wise).

The problem with star wars multiplayer games for me is that MOST people DON"T USE FORCE POWER. I find this dumb cause force power is what basically makes star wars games different from regular sword games. But i guess most people are losers and are afraid to fight with force power. This is basically my star wars multiplayer mode sucks. Cause almost nobody uses it in the stars wars context. The try to use it like they playing bashodo blade or something. Not to mention that most people are gay and complain about getting killed. Most stars wars games are full of losers, complainers and cowards. This is not the atmosphere i want to play in. So i choose not to buy star wars games anymore. The game is good but most people who play multiplayer losers, complainers and or cowards.

I cant believe that some people didnt like this game. True it doesnt stand up to BG2 and the fallout series but its got a good story line and plenty of action. If you didnt like it then you obviously didnt give it a chance and thus are a closed minded idiot. I hate ignorant people.

This game is WAY better than Baldur's Gate 2 !

Peteposted - Feb, 13 2004 - 02:43
I put this game almost at the top with Final Fantasy 7 (personal favourtie RPG game). Reason why I saw 'almost' is because there are some slight annoyances. But these annoyances (some of them beings bugs) are not that many or significant to detract you from playing the game. Great game, great story, could be a bit longer, but worth buying.

i think this game sucks it is too boring once you completed it (11 hours for me)

guyxXxposted - Mar, 06 2004 - 13:25
DO YOU ACTUALLY CONTROL YOUR CHARACTER ATTACK OR IS IT LIKE NEVERWINTER NIGHTS A CLIK ON ENEMY.

boemposted - Mar, 08 2004 - 20:39

IMHO KotOR is all that DX:IW boasts to be and more. It is not watered down to almost nothingness for console market like DX:IW is, it allows player a decent amount of freedom, it has dafinitely a nice climate and is extremely playable. Sometimes it gets frustrating (especially at highest difficulty setting while playing scoundrel/jedi consular) but lots of sidequests and (I bet intended) puns make for really enjoyable gaming experience. It -has- (as opposite to DX:IW) a plot twist and interesting storyline. So, Warren Spector, learn to make -good- games for console market AND PC market from this shining example. Because DX:IW was a major disappointment for me. Thanks for KotOR Bioware and LucasArts! At least -one- title to enjoy.

This is a very good game, not in the same league as bg2 and Fallout but its still very much worth playing even if your not a starwars fan. The only thing i have to complain abut is that it is to easy, even at the hardest setting you wont die much if you know what you are doing. Oh, and btw, to "lol - [email protected]" that posted above that you finished it in 1 hours...i have one word for ya mate...BS, you didnt finish it that fast, i can bet my left nut on it.

THE POWER OF THE DARK SIDE OF THE FORCE IS STRONGER THAN THE STUPID JEDIS.THE BEST OF A STAR WARS GAME IS TO CONTROL THE DARK SIDE.I WISH LUCAS MAKE A GAME WHERE WE CAN CONTROL A TRUE MASTER OF THE DARKNESS LIKE DARTH SIDIOUS
