Neocron
(hx) 11:14 PM CET - Feb,05 2003

Neocron is a 3D Cyberpunk Science Fiction MMORPG that combines the RPG style with some first person shooter elements. The game is playing in a post apocalyptic world of the 28th century, approximately 600 years after humanity had finally managed to nuke itself into a second stone age. The fallout caused massive geological changes and threw humanity back into the stone ages, until one day a wandering tribe found the complete scientific knowledge of the 22nd century, stored safely in a deep underground. Neocron is one of the three remaining cities on Earth created and developed from the ruins of World War III. It's a futuristic city full of mission terminals, which set you tasks so you can stock up on Neocredits (NC - in-game currency) and buy weapons and equipment. Neocron is surrounded by vast wastelands, where desert plains, steep mountains, filthy swamp regions and even some lifeless lakes can be found, all those regions populated by mutated flora and fauna. The settings for the city and all the zones linking off from it are dark and moody, many a little claustrophobic.

The character creation process of Neocron is much like other MMORPGs. You chose your characters name and class (PSI-Monk, GenTank, Private Eye, Spy), gender (the sex does not affect the character's skills) and skills, and the faction to which you want your character to belong initially. Each faction has a lengthy history if you choose to read it, but that could take hours. Although the game has just four character classes, your choices are quite complicated, since each class has a multiple job options. The Private Eye is not specialized in any particular area (equality in all skill levels, but limited in their development), he has latent talents to become a bounty hunter, PSI-fighter, Investigator, Merchant or Testdriver (one can own vehicles). But it's a long road to any of those "positions" for an average citizen, the Spy is versatile and agile - both physically and mentally. His physical strength has limits, but he can use his finely-honed mind in many areas - as a scientist, engineer, hacker, for example, or drone operator - which are not open to other players. GenTank (Genetically Engineered Human Tank) is particularly robust and strong and was bred as a genetically engineered soldier, but he cannot develop any PSI capabilities and finally the PSI Monk is the most intelligent of the four classes and therefore has a much better PSI capabilities and is able to boost his PSI-power and intelligence skills to extremely high levels, however it is nearly impossible for him to become a good fighter, you will rarely find a PSI Monk engaging in weapon based combat. The skill system within Neocron works differently than those found in most other games. It is made up of a set of five skill classes (PSI Power, Intelligence, Constitution, Dexterity and Strength), each of which has a set of related sub-skills. That means that instead of training in a particular skill class you must train in the related sub-skills, for instance the "melee weapons", "heavy weapon combat", "transport" and "resist force" skills are associated to the strength stat.

You start the game in your apartment, which you get for free (later you can buy new ones, larger and better furnished), with default inventory items which are usually a basic weapon, a bit of armor and maybe a health drugs to get you by. In your apartment you can access lockers, restore your health, get resurrected with the GenRep (a resuscitation and transport station), use the mobile GoGuardian storage system (can be used to transport items around the game), or log on to the CityCom computer terminal to accept missions, check e-mail. How you proceed is entirely up to you. I strongly recommend you to first read game manual and play Offline Neocron tutorial. Only the thing that should be in a manual is that the access code in the elevator for getting into your apartment is your character's name. I spent nearly 30 hours building up a Private Eye character and earning enough to buy some weapons and combat upgrades. The easiest way how to earn some money is to visit the nearest terminal and pick up some missions from your chosen faction, from simple FedEx deliveries to killing a certain number of baddies to researching or constructing items for your faction, the other possible sources of income are trading (you can construct weapons and sell them at your local Yo's Pawn shop) and monster hunting. This does not mean that you have to do any of the above mentioned to be able to "live" in Neocron. But if you want to buy equipment ..., you will need some Neocredits. The game contains over twenty four different variations of weapon, there are projectile weapons (pistols, rifles, UZIs, flamethrowers), energy weapons, heavy weapons, you will also be able to use a PSI Modulator to use your PSI skills to attack. You will also be able to upgrade your weapons, to give them a higher ammo capacity etc. You can carry your gun around in public, however CopBots watch many streets and open fire whenever a weapon is drawn. Of course, it is possible to kill CopBots but you can expect a large amount of other CopBots to hunt you down afterwards. Do not be afraid of the CopBots and your enemies - in the worst case they can kill you :P Death is not the end for your character in the game as you will have the option to respawn in your apartment. Besides weapons, there are also six basic types of "tech-tools" you may end up using: Research, Construct, Recycle, RepairSalvage, and Hack. Of course, Recycling, Constructing or Researching anything requires that the relevant skill be equal to or greater than the tech level of the item in question; the greater your skill, the easier it will be. There are also implants and drugs which will permanently or temporarily give you skills, increase (or decrease) statistics, all available for a price.

The combat system is very intuitive, but also highly skill dependent, regarding the skills of your character, not your mouse skills - that means you don't need be the FPS king to succeed in Neocron. If your character has the appropriate skill levels, he/she should have no problem to kill anyone :) The beginners are protected by the "Law Enforcer" chip (LE) - that they are not able to hurt any other players and that they cannot be hurt themselves by other players. All characters with implanted chip need 25% more skill for anything requiring a skill check, and get 25% less experience for any kills or quests they do. You can implant or remove (from your head) the Enforcer any time you wish without any special tools or skills, I kept the chip to level 10 or so. Once remove the chip you can draw your weapons in the CopBot's safe zones and fire at other players who have also removed their chips.

Neocron features quite interesting interface called R.P.O.S. (Retinal Projected Operating System), vastly different from any of the other MMORPGs on the market. This system is reminiscent of Deus Ex and System Shock 2. The first part of the interface allows you move around the world of Neocron and perform simple actions such as attacking, firing weapons, initiating communication with NPCs, trading between players, or picking up and activating items, the second part of the interface is the only way to manage your inventory, chat, change your equipment. The second inferface contains the Nav-Ray - a satellite linked navigation system. You can select your desired destination and confirm your choice. If the area you are in is part of the detailed Navigation System, you will see a glowing green line that will guide you directly to your desired destination. In addition, in the bottom of the NavRay window are three buttons, which open a small map of the area you are in (small map), a map of the whole section (large map) or a view of the complete world of Neocron (worldmap). In each map a cursor marks the position of your character. Needless to say the Nav-Ray is really great idea in the game.

There are a few features that I didn't mention, such as stock exchange, virtual battle arenas called NeoFrag, 8-bit video games you can play and rank at StarTerms, casinos/casino games you can win or lose credits at, bars, strip clubs, topless striptease dancers and more :) I bet you won't be bored, however don't forget to eat and sleep in your real life . Neocron is the best MMORPG game I have played so far. If you are Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk fan, it's definitely worth playing. Neocron can bought as an Online Download (1.2GB + you pay for the CD key in effect), monthly subscription costs $9,95 (4 weeks for free). For more information visit the official Neocron homepage.

gfx: 4/5 - solid (may feel a little dated but who cares), fast 3D engine with mirror&lighting effects, detailed and densely populated world, played from first-person perspective, more faces and clothes would be fun, low polygon monsters

I remember trying to download the beta of this months ago. Never could download it because the servers were incredibly slow. Looks cool but I dont pay to play :)

u must be a pretty cheap bastard then. neocron is an amazing game, BUY IT! BUY IT NOW.

dadilusposted - Feb, 07 2003 - 12:48
If every game charges that price how long will your money last.

Ushouldplay4freeposted - Feb, 07 2003 - 13:11
Yep - I have heard that ppl with money play this game atm... But ~10€/month!?....So if I play this like 10-12 month at least => + 100€!? Plus the game itself ~50€?? Is it like this? Stupid idea idea if so......

Teddyposted - Feb, 07 2003 - 14:28
Wow you guys are newbs or what?? Its a MMORPG.. ALL MMORPG's charge a monthly fee.. This ain't some cheesy battlenet game with 5 people playing, this is a game with THOUSANDS playing. Go rob a bank or something.. FFS

Buzzarkposted - Feb, 07 2003 - 18:25
As far as MMORPG's NeoCron costs less than most of the opposition. NeoCron is very immersive to play and has a great range of ways you can choose to play and a WORKING player based economy. There are bugs, yes.. but there are bugs in all the games of this genre (MMORPG).

Everquestposted - Feb, 07 2003 - 23:27
Most games will eventually be pay to play, ever see the cost of a real server to run these games on? Much more than your 'uber fast gaming rig' at home :)

giGGlerposted - Feb, 08 2003 - 02:18
You can rent a game server for $30-50 a month. :D I could care less about MMORPG thats why I would never pay to play. Not my style.

Vladposted - Feb, 08 2003 - 05:01
Neocron looks crap and requires a monthly fee. Not a hard decision to make, actually.

neocronaticposted - Feb, 08 2003 - 06:32
its not a hard decision for you to make because you are an ignorant retard. the graphics are fine, and look pretty damn sweet in really high resolutions, give the game a go before making any kind of a decision, or find urself a job and earn some money you bum!

Precurserposted - Feb, 08 2003 - 10:57
Necron is lame online game, after few months you wont have anything to do except join a clan and fight...its so easy to finish it.

Youposted - Feb, 08 2003 - 13:04
That server you can rent for 30-50$ a month can hold how many people? :) I hardly expect it can hold 3000+ on at the same time :P

giGGlerposted - Feb, 08 2003 - 13:17
I guess we are talking apples and oranges here. Anyways at $10 per person x 3000 people = $30,000. I bet I could get it for less than that. :) BTW Neocronatic you don't need to make childish remarks to people who don't agree with you. Im sure most of us here wouldnt want to play an MMORPG with you then. Have to pay to play the game and listen to people like you whine. :)

Thinkposted - Feb, 08 2003 - 14:33
$30,000...perhaps you dont fully realise the power of the servers needed for these games? :) http://www.sun.com/servers/midrange/ - Those are the midrange servers and check out those prices, not very nice really... You pay to play because of these servers, the bandwith you use, the constant updating of the game via patches, the salaries of the devs / customer support, techs who work 24/7 if a server goes down, extra R/D on new expansions etc, $10 a month goes quite far when you really think about it.

giGGlerposted - Feb, 08 2003 - 20:56
I could go on but I won't. Enjoy your MMORPG guys. :D

imyomommasposted - Feb, 08 2003 - 23:17
well i liked this game right upto the point where it say you gotta keep paying to play, i'd rather invest that money into porn get more bang for my buck (phun intended) but i can download that free...hmm so what am i gonna do with this money i save each month !gosh i know i'll save it and buy an extra freaking game every so often frankly i say f#ck this cash guzzler

Im sory but ur all moron. You buy Tony hawk 3 u play it for a month then u hardly play it ever again... If you buy an mmorpg u wont want to spend ur cash on other games because ull be having so much fun with just 1. So instead o buying a new game every other week or month u pay 10 bucks a month even cheaper!! if u pay for 6 months its only 40 bucks fro christs sakes.

At least the Pay-to-Play folk play legal :p j/k There are just different breeds of gamers. Leave it that way. When I first started playing MMORPG's I had issues with the whole pay-to-play concept too. Now It's just like paying my cable subscription.

xepposted - Feb, 10 2003 - 09:22
Is a great game: cheap, cool graphics, good gameplay, low net transfer, nice anti-lag system, lots of items, lots of diffrent places to visit and live, fast fixes/patches, many chars/game, AND is cyberpunk MMO RPG+FPS :) you can try the demo if you want.

Kraiklynposted - Feb, 10 2003 - 10:49
To all those peeps fretting about the cost, think of it this way: I bought this game for £24 from amazon and that gives me 6 weeks to play it. If I don't like it after 6 weeks then fine, its no different from any other game. Lets face it, a standard offline game you're probably gonna be finished with after 6 weeks. And 10 euros a month is nothing in my opinion. I mean come on I spend more on newspapers than that. This is especially true of FPS games, which don't really offer much replayability, its just the same old linear levels over and over. I would say if you are into RPGs then give it a go, you'll love it!

Neocron rocks! I like the idea of a mmorpg in a cyberpunk futuristic enviorment. And so what if you have to pay a monthly fee, its worth it for reasons like: Its always updating with new stuff, its so unpredictable anything can happen. I've played it for 6 months now and I havent even seen 20% of the entire neocron world yet. And its pretty funny when you head out to the wastelands with your friends or clanmemebers for some great adventures. What's also really great is that one character can't be good with all the skills, thats why its so perfect with a clan. For example the big robots, called warbots that are huge, have to be hacked to open and check the inventory of the warbot when their dead. And most hackers can't kill them by theirself and can take a Tank character with them for help. Its all about teamwork baby, have a nice day fellows. Cya Online, peace!

ok just writing my opinion. First, if ur too dumb to know that mmorpg have monthly fee just close ie and go play to ur crappy game. here's wat monthly fee means: 3000 players paying 10$ each=30k server=around 100$ a month(mmorpg need GOOD servers) 250 different zone so in a mmorpg u need a server per zone so 100 x 250= 25k ....30k-25k=5k... then u have to pay the gms and shit... now much profit if you ask me...and the game cost 30$ and 1 month is included... anyways to tell the truth the game i enjoyed the most (or close to) was everquest...i played 9 months and i dont regret beeing so broke (i was 15) btw wat means 10$ a month? well cut ur neiboor grass once a month and uve made it...hard huh? and for thoses who say neocron is crappy and never tried it i just have a word to tell you: http://www.fileplanet.com/files/110000/110059.shtml when i first saw neocron, i said: well looks not so bad but i doubt ill pay for that, then i saw the demo and tried it. As i played it i kept getting amazed by wat i was seen... making my own rocket launcher, using hack tool to unlock the door by MYSELF...not holding a key during 10 secs like in cs...anyways this game looks great and ill start playing as soon i get some money...thx for reading and start playing to tell reakktor they made an awesome game

this game is highly boring. you will find it like talking to a wall. it never responds and you have to use your own imagination to make the game seem cool. well what does that sound like? it sounds like a dream? why spend money on this game then just go to sleep.

Xerxesposted - Nov, 21 2003 - 20:18
Its sad to see so many people around that simply have no idea what the game is about and yet still cast their oppinions out into the world. If you haven't played, why say anything regarding its quality? I don't go around telling you your house sucks without seeing it. It's simple, Neocron is a massibe multi player online game. People with jobs can pay $25 for 3 months and save a few greenbacks. Kiddies and whiners can stay here writing posts on games they've never seen. It's better for Neocron to not have you there if that's your mentality. The graphics are done well enough to be immersive. The poly count is a little low. But otherwise there is plenty to look at. Sound is okay, music is great. Its unique game with FPS style combat, and RPG leveling with all kinds of ingame features like email, forums, stock markets etc. You can pretty much build any item that you can buy in the game. Making crafters something to be desired. Well, have fun.
