  • NVIDIA Maxwell, GTX 980, GTX 970 Q&A With Tom Petersen - The chaps over at PC Perspective held a little Q&A with NVIDIA's Tom Peterson focusing on the recently launched Maxwell GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970.
  • Windows 10: There are six new keyboard shortcuts - If you are like many of the readers of Gameguru, you likely downloaded the technical preview of Windows 10. While there are many new features like virtual desktops and the Start menu making its return, for keyboard lovers out there, Microsoft is also introducing six new keyboard shortcuts to take advantage of the new features
  • Hands On: Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9841 - Here's what you need to know about Windows 10. Windows 10: Hardware requirements to be the same as Windows 8
  • The Reason Behind The Windows 10 Name - I don't know, this seems like a plausible explanation for the reason behind the jump from Windows 9 to Windows 10. But who knows :-)
  • VLC released for Windows 8.1 - If you are looking for a quality media player on Windows, look no further than VLC. The player works with a wide range of media and is generally regarded as the standard for all other media players to be judged against. The team behind the app has announced today that VLC is now out for Windows 8.1. For clarity, at this time, the download link is the same as the Windows 8 version and do know that if you have a prior version of the modern app installed, you should remove it before you update.
  • Google Drive for Education, gives unlimited storage to students - Google Drive was announced just over two years ago and while it was partially shoehorned into use by being integrated into Gmail (much like OneDrive with Office or Windows), it has developed a fairly large and committed following of 190 million active users, according to Google. Expanding their program, Google is now offering a series of really interesting benefits for students whose educational institution provides them with a Google Apps for Education account. These benefits come at no additional charge to the school or the student and include: 1.Unlimited storage in their Google Drive account with a maximum raw file size of up to 5TB / 2. Google Apps Vault which allows users to archive their emails and chats, as well as a few other things /3. Enhanced security allowing for better information regarding the activity and usage of a file.
  • Unpatchable USB malware is now in the wild - The code comes directly from security researchers who believed publishing the info was the only way to force companies into taking action and fixing the problem. According to them high-level agencies like the NSA might have already had access to such code and they may already be exploiting this vulnerability.
  • iOS 8 security flaw offers your password as a QuickType suggestion - iOS 8 brings with it a new keyboard feature called QuickType, a row of words that lives on top of the keyboard offering you predictive suggestions based on your typing history. According to multiple reports, a security flaw in iOS 8 offers not just your usual words as QuickType suggestions, but even your password.
  • iOS 8 bug in 'Reset All Settings' permanently deletes iCloud Drive - A new bug has been discovered in iOS 8 that causes iCloud Drive documents to be permanently deleted when a user taps on "Reset All Settings" through the Settings app. The issue, brought to light by a number of concerned readers on the MacRumors discussion forums, appears to be limited to iWork apps like Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
  • Galaxy Note 4 owners complain of uneven gaps around edges of screen - Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 went on sale this week in its home market of South Korea, but some of those who have already taken delivery of the company's new flagship aren't very happy with their purchase. A number of owners have complained that their devices have an uneven fit around the display, with a sizeable gap between the glass front and the handset's frame, at one edge.
  • Verizon Bags Plan to Throttle Heaviest Users - Verizon Wireless today said it will not move forward with a "network optimization" plan that would have throttled the mobile data speeds of its heaviest users. Verizon announced its intent to slow down the speeds of grandfathered-in unlimited data customers based on monthly usage and local cell-site conditions, but met with resistance from both the government and customers. The company has apparently had a change of heart. "Verizon is committed to providing its customers with an unparalleled mobile network experience," said the company in a statement. "At a time of ever-increasing mobile broadband data usage, we not only take pride in the way we manage our network resources, but also take seriously our responsibility to deliver exceptional mobile service to every customer. We've greatly valued the ongoing dialogue over the past several months concerning network optimization and we've decided not to move forward with the planned implementation of network optimization for 4G LTE customers on unlimited plans. Exceptional network service will always be our priority and we remain committed to working closely with industry stakeholders to manage broadband issues so that American consumers get the world-class mobile service they expect and value." Earlier today, Verizon Wireless boosted its highest data plan allowance from 50GB per month to 100GB per month, a sign that the company's network isn't hitting the capacity constraints it earlier implied were the reason behind the plan to throttle customers.
  • LG Debuts the F60, A Budget LTE Smartphone - Yesterday, Microsoft announced that they would be releasing a Technical Preview for Windows 10 on October 1st. But, if you are busy hitting the F5 key wondering where your download is, you will have to wait a bit longer. Thanks to a confidential document that was sent to partners and then uploaded to the web, the document states that the build will be available around 9 A.M PT /12 PM ET; that is roughly 1-2 hours from now.
  • Sprint Responds to AT&T's 'Double Data' Promo with Its Own - Sprint today moved to counter a mobile data promotion recently launched by AT&T by debuting its own. Beginning today, subscribers to Sprint's Family Share Pack plans will be able to double their data allotments. Families with the 32, 40, and 80GB plans will receive 60, 40, and 120GB, respectively, for the same monthly fee they're already paying. Customers have to visit Sprint stores or call in to customer support by October 31 to receive the new data packages. Additionally, Sprint is waiving the access charge for handsets, tablets, and mobile broadband devices on 20GB or higher data allowances for customers who switch their number to Sprint. Sprint is offering a similar double-data promotion to its business customers, as well.
  • AT&T Offering Double Data on Select Mobile Share Value Plans  - AT&T today launched a limited promotion that doubles the amount of monthly data available to certain plans for no extra charge. Customers who subscribe to one of AT&T's Mobile Share Value plans with 15, 20, 30, 40, or 50GB of data can upgrade their data to 30, 40, 60, 80, or 100GB, respectively, for free. The upgrade works with plans that include between two and 10 lines and already subscribe to a minimum of 15GB ($160 per month). The promotion, which is available to new and existing customers, runs between today and October 31. AT&T said the promotional data allotments will not expire, and customers can keep them as long as they subscribe to a Mobile Share Value plan.
  • GoPro unveils the HERO4, 4K demo video looks superb - After months of speculation, GoPro has finally unveiled its next generation of HERO devices, the HERO4s. While GoPro tends to offer multiple cameras under the HERO name, the flagship Black model is perhaps the most interesting, always offering the most cutting edge technology of the bunch. In this iteration, the HERO4 Black takes HD video recording and bumps up the resolution to 4K. But, that's not all the improvements that the HERO4 Black offers. The new HERO4s will offer two times the processing power of its predecessors. This will give the new HERO4 Black the capability to record 4K at 30fps, 2.7K video at 50fps, and 1080p at 120fps. These settings will allow video capture that will virtually eliminate the rolling shutter effect and allow for slow motion video effects. The HERO4 Black will also have improved audio performance by capturing high fidelity audio that will have two times the dynamic range of previous models.

  • Mining Bitcoin With Pencil and Paper - Bitcoins are mined using a cryptographic algorithm called SHA-256. This algorithm is simple enough to be done with pencil and paper, as I show in this video. Not surprisingly, this is a thoroughly impractical way to mine. One round of the algorithm takes 16 minutes, 45 seconds which works out to a hash rate of 0.67 hashes per day.

watch this instead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuoboTvpDUc save 20mins+ looking at flat gui shit.

my main gripe is that the gui has that shit flat square theme going which is just a reminder of win8 metro shit.. if they added some better skinning features.. I just scrape out and disable all of its fucking infested spyware shit and tile crap etc.. It might be an ok upgrade from Win7 after the explorer shell extension and other applications get updated support for it.

but they really have done FUCK ALL to really improve much of anything, i'm sure a lot of the options are in the that metro gui crap just gets ugly uglier, going back to startmenu (that still looks like shit) windowed tiles.. these are not huge improvements these are things that Win8 should have fucking had from the start, and virtual desktops aren't so some fucking huge baseline improvement either... crappy linux desktops have had them for ages, its a piss poor method of workflow improvement and task management personally.

MS just brainless b0rg these days.

Win8 licenses should get this update for free as an apology :P heh the probably skipped win9 just to avoid complaints from win8 userbase wanting exactly that 8)

Have you used iOS recently Koogle? Have you seen what Android L is going to look like? Flat look is in!

Koogle(05:23 PM CEST - Oct,05 2014 )
flat is cheap on design, and cheap on resources (barely any io/badnwidth on image loading), so quicker loading ...all these fucking web companies want to reduce load times on apps etc because the average user has the attention span of a fucking ant. welp its taking more than 3seconds to load.. I'll just do something else. COmpany.. oh noes precious data we can use to sellout our customer and boost our platform is going down!!!

So it works for mobiles which is where M$ flatshit color square were introduced first on windows wen/mobile.. they are just so fucking lazy they want consumers to accept that crap on desktops.

Developers/companies go along with it because its cheap and easy, and they need fuck all design skill or gui designer to hire.

Quiet frankly windows95 looked(could look) fucking better and at least had some sort design work, also color theming was there in semi detail for the desktop user to change colors for different parts of winform ui. M$ to fucking lazy to offer such customization and options anymore.. yet they roll in money because of fucking dumb people are these days.

WinXP went with full on gfx theming.
Vista kept gfx theming, but dumbed it down with color shading.
Both cases you needed thirdparty software to really get at doing themes for the OS.

Win8 went fullretard anti gui customization and trying to force people into liking this square flat color tile shit which was a push to mobile , and getting developers doing crapps that MS could use to boost there shit mobile platform and bring there metro appshit into cloud spyware on the desktop. A win on all fronts for MS.

If MS weren't so fucking shit though, they would introduce a skinning api that allowed the windows theme to be customized much like css. So enthusiast could easily tailor there desktop to how they want with relative ease of using css styling markup and get away with doing some pretty cool theming of the gui without the need for photoshop and other thirdparty apps needed for theming the gui etc.

gx-x(05:29 PM CEST - Oct,05 2014 )
no one is forcing you to do anything. If you do a little research you will find that most people don't even look at win UI save for taskbar. So why invest in that at all? Theming support would be nice tho, I agree with that. But again, most people I know, including myself, do everything in full screen. that 1% of time when I am doing something like copy/paste I really don't care. I also don't use win 8 start screen, I use start menu app instead, problem solved.

Koogle(07:59 PM CEST - Oct,05 2014 )
well i don't do anything in fullscreen mcuh anymore.. everything windowed even production apps are often windowed.. with other relevant windows just behind.. depending on which direction is faster to mouse to... taskbar task, or window behind or altab but thats hit or miss cycling etc..

fullscreen applications/games to me is rarely used with larger lcd's which was partly white metro shit single tasking was such abig fuck you to anyone but tablet drones. The stupidity of M$ to even go so far as to bring window OS control panel options from windowed form (which was often more better usage of screenspace with more options), into there stinking pile of metro tile crap gui was a big stinking fuck you to anyone but the drone that accepts such pile of shit dumbed down interfaces oversized spaced out fonts etc.

I even play a lot of games windowed now, except for shooters then fullscreen makes sense for best focus.

Desktop is for quick multitasking. Also why virtual desktops never really appealed me to because the workflow isn't as fast, what is fast is being able to partly see as much application window space as possible all the time. Having to switch views or move windows about means you doing it wrong to me, but its all dependent on available screen space i guess, it works on a tablet because the screensize is to small that you need everything fullscreen really even with larger dpi screens.

quote:
most people don't even look at win UI save for taskbar

Probably right, they must be fucking color blind aswel because win8 is just diabolical, win95 is better looking in most cases.

even win95 classic had fucking gradient title bar.. compared win8 flatshit color everywhere.

how can we improve OS performance for benchmark fucking nerds to review and say our new oS <insert version number> is better than old one people should upgrade from.. lets not have so much infested background service shit, nah lets have a dull gui that uses marginally less processing battery/power. The fucking nerds will write good reviews and help sell this shit.

gx-x(08:52 PM CEST - Oct,05 2014 )
what can I say, you apparently like distractions, while for instance I don't. While I fully dislike win 8 start screen and tile bullshit, I do like the clean UI. I am an UI designer and graphics designer btw. and I assume you are a coder/programmer so forgive me for not understanding your point of view on this matter, like I don't understand 100+ coders that I work with, tho, most of them use linux but all fail at even most basic aesthetics (that's why company hired UI designers) but I assure you, I would never approve of those ugly tiles in win 8, let alone design such a thing in that way. Tiles CAN be good but they are not implemented in an appropriate way, so as they are now, it looks raw and I wouldn;t even touch mobile winOS phones, that is just plain retarded design, probably done by some coder with that idea coming as an order from the management, that thought "we need boxes, but they can't be like on android or iOS so make them different, don't care how".

with all being said, having a complex UI would severely impact my own decisions in design and lucky for me, my managers don't see win8 UI design as trending thing so I am not steered in that direction.

PS. Maybe they were inspired by Piet Mondrian's paintings:

:D

but those are paintings, not UI design, and also, if they are getting their idea from him - they are doing it wrong :d

Tom(04:52 PM CEST - Oct,06 2014 )
Already too much discussion about M$. Fuck if anyone wants to go in a coma just read all this above. LOL! The facts have not changed. Since Win7, Windows is sucky and their implementation or sales tactics to throw tiles in and F up the start button turns everyone off. I will stay on Win7 for as long as I possibly can.
