Google's TurboQuant Breakthrough Sparks Memory Chip Stock Selloff - tech
(hx) 05:51 PM CET - Mar,27 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
Google Research has unveiled TurboQuant, a new compression algorithm that slashes key-value cache memory usage for large language models by up to 6x while delivering inference speedups of up to 8x on hardware like Nvidia H100 GPUs, all without any loss in model accuracy.

Announced on March 24, 2026, the software-only technique quantizes KV caches down to as low as 3 bits and maintains perfect performance on benchmarks, including long-context tasks. Investors reacted swiftly, driving sharp declines in memory chip stocks: Samsung and SK Hynix each fell around 5-6% in Seoul trading, while Micron dropped significantly in U.S. markets amid fears of reduced long-term demand for high-bandwidth memory.

Lords of the Fallen II 'Umbral Gameplay' trailer - movie
(hx) 01:50 PM CET - Mar,27 2026 - Post a comment
Publisher CI Games and developer Hexworks have released new gameplay footage for Lords of the Fallen II as part of the ninth episode in its “Lifting the Veil” developer roundtable series. In it, CI Games chief creative officer and creative strategist Ryan Hill is joined by game director James Lowe, lead systems designer Daniel Regan, and producer Alex Harkin to discuss how the team is evolving the original game’s dual-realm mechanic into “Umbral 2.0,” largely inspired by player feedback from the first game. In Lords of the Fallen II, Umbral promises to be a “much more aggressive and oppressive force” and play a larger role in shaping the player’s journey. “If Umbral was once the realm of the dead, it has since become the realm of the undead,” said Hill in a press release. “Its former scab-like crust has been ripped away, revealing the raw flesh beneath—an open wound that seethes with newfound hunger.”

Lords of the Fallen II is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Epic Games Store in 2026.

Fake Samsung 990 Pro SSD Clone is So Good, It's Nearly Impossible to Spot - tech
(hx) 01:25 PM CET - Mar,27 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
Exceptional counterfeit versions of Samsung's popular 990 Pro SSD are flooding the market, replicating near-identical performance that blurs the line between genuine and fake drives. The high-quality clones have emerged amid surging demand for AI computing hardware, fueling a booming knock-off industry. Buyers risk purchasing fakes that look and perform almost exactly like the real thing, making detection extremely difficult. This development highlights growing challenges in the PC component space as counterfeiters leverage advanced manufacturing techniques.
The fake Samsung 990 Pro features a sticker that closely mimics the original. This is where the technical know-how comes into play. The drive may look authentic on the surface, but a closer inspection reveals drastic discrepancies. For starters, the Samsung 990 Pro leverages the brand's proprietary Pascal SSD controller. The fake uses the Maxio MAP1602 SSD controller, which has a different design and is smaller than the Pascal controller. Tellingly, the rear of the counterfeit SSD even openly states the Maxio model number.

Another key distinction lies in DRAM and NAND. The Samsung 990 Pro features LPDDR4 memory, a component absent from the fake due to the DRAM-less nature of the Maxio MAP1602 SSD controller. As for the NAND, the original uses Samsung’s 176-Layer V-NAND TLC flash, while the type in the counterfeit remains uncertain. It’s likely QLC, though, since counterfeiters won't spend extra on TLC for a product whose primary purpose is to bamboozle the buyer.

Typical Samsung 990 Pro lookalikes fall flat when you benchmark them. Some fakes are slower than a USB 2.0 pendrive, while others perform similarly to a PCIe 3.0 SSD. However, the one that Akiba PC Hotline! had in its possession exhibited a solid, very convincing performance. The drive delivered sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,255 MB/s and 6,090 MB/s, respectively, just a bit shy of the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB's rated speeds of 7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s.

Critical Synology DSM Flaw Lets Hackers Run Commands Remotely - No Login Needed - tech

A critical buffer overflow vulnerability (CVE-2026-32746, CVSS 9.8) in Synology DiskStation Manager's telnetd daemon allows unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands on affected NAS devices.

The flaw, stemming from improper buffer handling in the GNU Inetutils package, impacts DSM versions up to 7.3 and could enable ransomware deployment, data theft, or backdoors.

Synology has released patches for DSM 7.2.1, 7.2.2, and 7.3; a fix for DSMUC 3.1 is in development.

Administrators should update immediately or disable the Telnet service as a temporary mitigation, since Telnet is plaintext and insecure.

DIY Cooling Mod Turns Apple's Fanless MacBook Neo into a Gaming Beast - tech
(hx) 11:47 AM CET - Mar,26 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
Tech enthusiasts are buzzing over a bold modification to Apple's new fanless MacBook Neo, which relies on a simple graphene pad and throttles heavily at 105°C during demanding tasks like gaming. YouTuber ETA Prime replaced the stock cooling with a custom copper heatsink and an external $50 magnetic liquid-cooled Peltier cooler, slashing temperatures to around 74°C. The results are striking: No Man's Sky frame rates doubled from about 30fps to 58-60fps, while Geekbench and Cinebench scores improved by 9-19% with far better sustained performance. Though the mod highlights untapped potential in the A18 Pro-powered laptop, it risks voiding warranties and isn't recommended for most users.

Apple's MacBook Neo launched in early 2026 as an affordable, silent 13-inch device.

Musk Eyes Epic Games Takeover Amid Fortnite Layoffs ChaosA viral X post from Esports Hub claimed Elon Musk has shown interest in acquiring Epic Games and ousting CEO Tim Sweeney, quoting the billionaire as saying, “Yeah, I’ll do it. I don’t see why not.” The satirical story, complete with images of Musk in a tuxedo and Sweeney at a Fortnite event, quickly spread through the esports community. Fortnite fans reacted with a mix of memes, panic, and demands for fixes like better regional servers, while some warned that Musk’s style could “ruin” the game like changes on X. This buzz comes just one day after Epic announced over 1,000 job cuts due to declining Fortnite engagement and rising costs.

No official confirmation or comment has emerged from Musk or Epic Games on any potential deal. The post highlights ongoing tensions in the gaming world between player frustrations and corporate shifts.

The Best Intel CPU in Years! 270K Plus Review - tech
(hx) 05:31 PM CET - Mar,25 2026 - Post a comment / read (2)
Overclocker der8auer has reviewed Intel's newly launched Core Ultra 200S PLUS series, spotlighting the Core 270K Plus as a standout refresh of the Arrow Lake lineup. Priced around €300 with 8 P-cores and 16 E-cores, the 270K Plus delivers performance nearly matching the higher-end 285K — and even edges it out by 4% in some multi-threaded benchmarks — while undercutting it by about €200. The CPU supports faster memory up to 7200 MT/s and shines in productivity tasks, outperforming AMD's Ryzen 7 9700X at a lower cost, though it trails in certain gaming scenarios against AMD's 3D V-Cache models.

Tested on custom water cooling with an ASUS ProWS Z890 motherboard, it reached strong Cinebench scores at modest power draw, marking it as Intel's most competitive offering in recent memory.

NVIDIA Releases GeForce 595.97 WHQL Game Ready Drivers - tech
(hx) 07:13 PM CET - Mar,24 2026 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has released GeForce 595.97 WHQL, a minor bug-fix update with no new Game Ready titles this time. The driver is part of the R595 branch, which has had a fair number of issues. The 595.59 release was pulled entirely back in February after users reported fan detection failures and clock instability, and 595.79 followed shortly after to address a separate batch of issues.
This latest release addresses three remaining issues: texture corruption in Halo Infinite on R595 drivers, stability issues in HITMAN World of Assassination when NVIDIA Smooth Motion is enabled, and crashes triggered when enabling DLSS Frame Generation while Instant Replay is active. Known issues still present include missing terrain in some areas of Enshrouded and occasional stutter in Arknights: Endfield. No general bugs are listed as fixed this time.
Here is the changelog:

Halo Infinite: Texture corruption may occur on R595 drivers
Hitman: World of Assassination: Game stability issues when NVIDIA Smooth Motion is enabled
Game stability issues after enabling DLSS FG when Instant Replay is enabled
Release notes are available here (PDF).
Microsoft Kills Popular Windows 11 Registry Hack for Native NVMe SSD Support - tech
(hx) 07:08 PM CET - Mar,24 2026 - Post a comment / read (3)
Microsoft has shut down a widely used registry hack that enabled the native nvmedisk.sys driver on Windows 11, which users reported delivering 10-15% better SSD performance through lower latency and higher transfer speeds. The tweak, previously simple to apply, is now blocked in the latest Insider builds, forcing enthusiasts to hunt for workarounds like third-party tools or updated feature IDs. Some users argue the change harms Microsoft's image, especially since native NVMe support already exists in Windows Server. Others note the driver may have caused instability on certain hardware, while a few claim the feature still works with minor adjustments.
The trick, which ported a Windows Server 2025 feature to consumer PCs running Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, had delivered up to 85% higher random write performance in earlier benchmarks. Unfortunately, the four FeatureManagement registry overrides that previously activated the native NVMe stack no longer function.

The native NVMe driver (nvmedisk.sys) replaces the legacy storage path that has routed NVMe commands through a SCSI translation layer since before NVMe SSDs existed. Microsoft originally shipped the driver in Windows Server 2025 last December, claiming up to 80% higher IOPS and 45% lower CPU utilization under high I/O loads. The driver binary was already present in Windows 11 but disabled by default.
Microsoft really isn't helping its image here. The NVME driver should've been brought officially to Windows 11 at the same time as the server build!!!
