Jeff Bezos Says AI Could Signal the End of the PC Era, Accelerating Move to Cloud - tech
(hx) 11:37 AM CET - Jan,24 2026 - Post a comment / read (9)
Tech industry veteran Jeff Bezos has reiterated his long-held view that the traditional personal computer - as a locally owned and operated device - could soon become obsolete, replaced by cloud-based computing services. Bezos argues that as artificial intelligence (AI) workloads become ever more demanding, owning powerful local hardware may no longer make economic or practical sense; instead, users will 'buy compute off the grid' from cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS). This shift is being fueled by what industry observers call a 'RAMageddon' - memory manufacturers are prioritizing AI data centers, driving up prices for PC components and potentially making traditional desktops and laptops more expensive and harder to find. Analysts forecast that supply imbalances could last until 2028, turning high-performance PCs into luxury items.

For PC gaming, this potential transition has significant implications. High-end gaming historically depended on powerful local GPUs and CPUs, but services like Nvidia GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming already demonstrate that gamers can stream graphically intense games without owning cutting-edge hardware. Some industry reports even suggest that millions of PC gamers might migrate to consoles or cloud platforms if local hardware costs continue to rise. However, critics note that latency and internet reliability remain hurdles for cloud gaming, especially for fast-paced competitive titles, meaning local hardware may still be preferred for serious gamers for years to come.

Console ecosystems also stand to benefit from this shift; subscription-based cloud gaming reduces the need for gamers to invest in new console generations, allowing platforms like Xbox and PlayStation to offer access across devices without dedicated hardware upgrades.

In daily life, a cloud-centric world could mean lighter devices (thin clients or tablets) that rely on remote servers for heavy processing, similar to how people use electricity from the grid rather than owning generators. This could lower the barrier to entry for computing power but raises questions about internet dependency, privacy, and long-term costs associated with subscription models.

I don't know what will happen. I live in a small town in the Czech Republic, not far from Prague, and there is still no fast internet here, nor any plans for the future. As you know, I manage IT for various companies and institutions. Small companies usually have connections around 40 Mbit/s, wealthier companies have 100 Mbit/s, and large schools have 300 Mbit/s (but that's still not enough. Imagine a school with 150 computers and 100 iPads... not counting phones!). I myself have 30 Mbit/s at work and 60 Mbit/s at home. Two years ago, O2 (well known to Europeans) bought a local ISP that had built a network in the area based on microwave links. But because everyone who buys a company wants a quick return on their investment, what is happening now is that they are replacing microwave transmitters with old-fashioned DSL or 5G (with the caveat that 5G is definitely not everywhere here; in some places, there is only LTE or 4G). It's just a mess... I myself want to buy Starlink this year, as it's the only way for me to get faster internet at an affordable price. To give you an idea, O2 can sell me 100 Mbit/s or even more via a microwave connection, but the prices for these speeds start at 400 euros per month! Which is unaffordable for me... Starlink for home use costs 61 euros a month, which is also quite a lot, but it's still affordable. I asked a few people who already have Starlink here, and they say they have speeds of around 190 Mbit/s-200 Mbit/s and latency of around 25 ms. Just for your information :-)

So much for cloud functionality in my area. Even completely normal applications have problems. Even Microsoft 365 doesn't work very well. I can't imagine gaming via the cloud at the moment (latency, stability). Here, the kids are happy that Roblox and Minecraft work for them.
Intel is cutting production of consumer PC processors - tech
(hx) 10:01 AM CET - Jan,24 2026 - Post a comment
Intel has admitted it underestimated demand from the AI sector and is shifting production capacity from mainstream consumer processors to Xeon server chips used in AI and data centers, according to CFO David Zinsner. This strategic pivot prioritizes high-margin enterprise products while reducing output of low-end CPUs, potentially making cheaper PCs harder to find. The company says it won’t fully abandon the consumer market but will emphasize mid- and high-range chips instead. Rising memory prices and industry-wide reallocation toward AI hardware compounds the pressure on consumer PC costs. The move reflects broader industry trends as chipmakers adjust to booming AI infrastructure demand.

This step may lead to a decrease in the availability of cheap PCs, especially against the background of a sharp increase in memory prices. Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung are also reallocating capacity in favor of DRAM and HBM for AI servers, which is why consumer memory has more than tripled in price in recent months.

Nvidia CANCELS cash back program, ending MSRP and skyrocketing prices - tech
(hx) 09:46 AM CET - Jan,24 2026 - Post a comment / read (3)
Nvidia has reportedly ended its OPP (Open Price Program), a partner incentive scheme that helped keep some GeForce RTX graphics cards selling close to their MSRP, according to tech YouTuber Der8auer. Without this program, industry insiders say MSRP pricing may no longer effectively exist, potentially leading to higher GPU prices. The move comes amid a global memory price and supply crunch, which has already strained GPU production and costs. Reports also suggest Nvidia is shifting supply away from mid-range models like the RTX 5070 Ti toward more expensive cards such as the RTX 5080. Overall, the cancellation of this pricing support scheme could worsen affordability for PC gamers as market dynamics take over.

Samsung Distributors Are Allegedly Hiking The Price Of All Memory Products By As Much As 80 Percent - tech
(hx) 10:44 AM CET - Jan,23 2026 - Post a comment / read (2)
Authorized Samsung distributors are reportedly implementing massive price increases of up to 80% across all Samsung memory products, including DRAM and NAND chips, according to an alleged distributor notice circulating online. The hike is attributed to global semiconductor market changes, limited supply increases amid surging demand (particularly from AI), and rising production costs. The document, purportedly from a Samsung dealership, claims the changes are effective immediately. Samsung has responded by stating it does not comment on industry rumors and speculation. The claim has sparked widespread discussion but remains unconfirmed as official policy from the manufacturer.

Ubisoft cancels Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake and more as part of company-wide reset - briefly
(hx) 06:49 PM CET - Jan,22 2026 - Post a comment / read (5)
Ubisoft has canceled six games as part of a thorough review of its content pipeline, including the 2026-due Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, four unannounced titles—three being new intellectual properties—and a mobile game.
Alongside this, Ubisoft has said it will allocate additional development time to seven games in order to ensure enhanced quality benchmarks are fully met and maximize long-term value creation. This includes an unannounced title originally planned for release in fiscal year 2026, that has now been delayed to fiscal year 2027.

All of this is part of a major organization, operational, and portfolio reset at Ubisoft that aims to “reclaim creative leadership and restore sustainable growth.” The reset includes canceling and delaying multiple projects, closing or restructuring studios, accelerating cost reduction, and resetting short-term financial expectations to prioritize long-term quality, profitability, and cash generation.
Ubisoft shares plunged over 30% following a "major company reset," leaving its market value under €600 million, as discussed in gaming communities. This volatility aligns with Euronext data showing prior closes around €6.63 and analyst targets ranging €7.10-€21.30, though sentiment leans cautious with 53% buy ratings.
