GeForce4 and GeForce4 MX Details - tech
(hx) 10:07 AM CET - Dec,25 2001 - Post a comment

XBitLabs.com have managed to find some interesting info on the features of the new chipsets from NVIDIA, which are due in the beginning of next year. We are talking about NV17 and NV25, of course The rumors say that there will be two models in the GeForce4 family and three models in the GeForce4 MX family:

  • GeForce4 Ti 1000. This is the fastest graphics cards built on GeForce4 chip working at about 300MHz frequency. The card will have AGP 8x interface and 128MB DDR SDRAM memory working at 700MHz.
  • GeForce4 Ti 500. This is a bit slower solution with around 275MHz chip frequency and 600MHz memory frequency. Although it will have AGP 4x interface, the card will still come with 128MB graphics memory.
  • GeForce4 MX 460. This is the eldest representative of the GeForce4 MX family. It will probably have 4 rendering pipelines and DirectX 8-compliant T&L unit. The amount of DDR graphics memory used (with 128bit bus) will be cut down to 64MB, and its working frequency will be reduced down to 550MHz. The core will work at 300MHz.
  • GeForce4 MX 440. These cards will go with 64MB DDR SDRAM with 128bit access bus. The memory working frequency will be 400MHz and the core frequency – 275MHz.
  • GeForce4 MX 420. According to the available data, this GeForce4 MX version will be targeted for the Low-End market that is why the cards built on it will have 64MB SDR SDRAM memory working at 166MHz. The core will work at 250MHz. Besides, It looks as if there were only two rendering pipelines in this modification.

Windows XP can be simply hacked! - tech
(hx) 10:12 PM CET - Dec,20 2001 - Post a comment
A Microsoft official acknowledged that the risk to consumers was unprecedented because the glitches allow hackers to seize control of all Windows XP operating system software without requiring a computer user to do anything except connect to the Internet.
Microsoft made available on its Web site a free fix for both home and professional editions of Windows XP and forcefully urged consumers to install it immediately.
The flaws, discovered five weeks ago by independent security researchers, threatened to undermine widespread adoption of Microsoft's latest Windows software, which many hope will be an economic catalyst for the sagging technology industry. [more]

NV25 (GeForce4) Information - tech
(hx) 09:44 PM CET - Nov,26 2001 - Post a comment
ReactorCritical has posted the details regarding NV17 and NV25 graphics processors and solutions based on the upcoming GPUs. It's pretty cool, because if you want to see some Xbox emulators soon, we will need these sweet chips in PC :) As always, pro-cards based on NVidia chips are presented by ELSA.
Synergy IV. According to the information published at c`t, there will be two boards with different clockings and onboard memory size. Both boards will be based on NV17 GPU (NV17GL, to be exact) and also support TwinView:
- NV17GL with core frequency of 250 MHz. 32 MB SDR SDRAM @ 200 MHz.
- NV17GL with core frequency of 300 MHz. 64 MB DDR SDRAM,@ 300 MHz. It seems that the the card is equipped with 64-bit DDR SDRAM. While such solution does not cost a lot, it still provides normal perfomance.

Gloria IV. Long-awaited NV25 based adapters. This graphics processor that have similar capabilities compared with XGPU is a lot more powerful than GeForce3 Ti500. Since it is manufactured using 0.13 microns technology, it has a lot of chances to be clocked at the very high levels. The GPU comes in January/February 2002, while professional boards should be available in the second quarter.

ELSA is going to launch two boards based on NV25GL processor, both supports two LCD monitors, though, we do not know whether there are two integrated TMDS transmitters or only one and the second is external.
NV25 that works on 275 MHz. 128 MB DDR SDRAM @ 250 MHz.
NV25 that works on 300 MHz. 128 MB DDR SDRAM @ 330 MHz

Xbox Gateway is an application that allows Xbox games that support system link to play against other systems through the Internet using a VPN. The basic functionality of this program is very similar to an ethernet bridge. This one just happens to be smart enough to only bridge XBOX game traffic, and to split it up to the right players as to not take unnecessary bandwidth.
The program is currently only available for Linux, but they are currently working on solutions for PowerPC based Linux, MAC OS X (BSD), and Windows. [more]

Xbox Review - tech
(hx) 02:25 AM CET - Nov,19 2001 - Post a comment
Smart chaps at Icrontic has written a very detailed review of the Xbox, It's pretty cool to see what is exactly inside. Here is a taster:
"That's where we are right now. There is a lot of potential here for hacking this machine. It can be done. I think the debug trace will open up a lot of options once we learn how to use it. This COMPUTER does have a BIOS, and there must be some way to get to it. It's also possible to wire in a USB hub into the controller riser card. We're still working out the wiring for this, and once we get it to work we will share the process with you.
I think it's definitely possible to upgrade the hard drive. I'm planning on ghosting the data to another drive. I'm sure someone has already tried this, and if you have please email me and tell me if it worked or not. What we're also going to try is upgrading the DVD-ROM. We're going to put a computer DVD-ROM in the unit, plug the ATX power connector into a running computer, and plug the IDE cable into the DVD-ROM. Hopefully it will accept the new drive. Chances are it won't, though."

Can’t negotiate the oddly-arranged oval buttons well enough to grind in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2X without slapping the flip and grab buttons at the same time? Does the XBox need repairs already? - tech
(hx) 11:16 PM CEST - Oct,24 2001 - Post a comment
I have read very interesting report over at Gaming Age, so check it out and judge for yourself :) Seems I will rather buy new GeForce3 card instead . Here is a taster:
There’s an Xbox that’s broken and it isn’t in any living room in America yet. The Xbox demo unit at a nearby Toys R Us store could not give consumers a taste of the new Microsoft console because of severe loading problems. The Xbox unit had no disc inside and displayed a menu screen to access the hard drive and CD player. But customers who tried to navigate through menus could do little else but wait while the machine tried to load the next menu. The audio that accompanied the menu screen transition skipped severely as well. After a three minute wait, the Xbox reached the next screen but continued to have load problems. Multiple resets also failed to resolve the problem. Soon after, a screen appeared that said the Xbox needed customer service repair. The screen provided a list of customer service phone numbers to contact.
Several Toys R Us employees did not know what went wrong with the Xbox demo unit that now carried a “Out of Order” sign. The store received their unit on Tuesday. The in-store demo units are believed to be actual finalized hardware that consumers will see at launch.

Inner secrets of X-Box revealed - tech
(hx) 05:58 AM CEST - Aug,25 2001 - Post a comment
The Inquirer posted an interview with an anonymous US X-Box games developer about X-Box emulation on PC and XBox games. He explains that the real reason it's not likely that emulation of X-Box games on the PC will succeed is because the X-Box uses a unified memory architecture:
"That's impossible to emulate in software, because games on X-Box can be designed to load stuff once in to memory and use it directly without uploading it to the graphics card. The whole memory management code for a well-written native X-Box game is therefore completely different from a PC game."
"It would be analogous to running your entire application out of VRAM. In fact, running the whole thing out of VRAM might work as a substitute on the PC, but the bus bandwidth would be greatly reduced - AGP 4X probably wouldn't cut it."
Despite claims that it's Windows-compatible, X-Box runs its own OS. Although the API bears a strong resemblance to the Win32 API, there are new functions in X-Box that simply don't exist in Windows, and vice-versa; plus many API functions that have the same name ignore certain parameters (this is especially true of the WinSock implementation). Gameboy Advance tweak causes damage - tech

An unfortunate high profile news post on pocket.ign.com may have led to a number of Americans permanently damaging their GameBoy Advance consoles. Complaints arose recently that the display was a bit dark, and inquisitive fiddlers on the IGN message boards put their thinking hats on trying to work out how to overcome this.
"A positive and negative voltage controls Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs)," the worrying Nintendo statement begins. "The 'contrast control' that you are referring to is actually a flicker control. The adjustment is used to synchronize the positive and negative voltages. If these voltages are out of adjustment then the LCD will no longer respond correctly. The result will be an excess charge built up in the liquid crystal and permanently damage the LCD. The excessive charge gives the appearance of a brighter screen because the liquid crystal is not reacting properly to the voltages applied. When the adjustment of the voltages is correct the changing polarities will not allow a charge to build up, which prolongs the LCD life." [more]

Sony's 40 gigabyte hard disk is due out in Japan next month, and when coupled with the PS2 broadband adapter, it should usher in a new stage of PS2 gaming. This hard disk attachment is apparently just the start of Sony's plans, though.
Japan's Mainichi Shimbun reports that Sony plans to release a new, higher capacity version of the hard drive every year, while keeping the price fixed. The paper would not delve into details regarding the size of the increments. [ps2.ign]

XBox DVD Add-on Remote @ $29 - tech
(hx) 08:34 PM CEST - Jun,15 2001 - Post a comment
Microsoft's Robbie Bach confirmed at a recent company financial meeting that the Xbox Add-on Remote will cost $29. He mentioned that the reason behind their decision is because they feel not everyone wants to pay the added cost of DVD playback. $29 will get you the remote and likely a passthrough plug you must insert into one of the game ports that will still allow the port to keep functionality.
"You buy [the DVD package] for $29, and that enables DVD movie playback," Bach said. "And the reason we did that is because for those of you who follow the DVD market, there's actually cost in including that in the box, and we didn't want everybody who bought the Xbox, which is a game device, to pay that cost. So it's only for about 10 or 15 percent of the people who we think are going to want to play DVD movies on the box--for $29 they get DVD playback fully enabled with a really nice controller."
