  • Hard Disk Will Have Hackers Seeing Double - Hackers will be unable to attack Web sites protected by a new security system unless they can change the laws of physics, according to Naoto Takano, chief executive officer of Scarabs, a Japanese company. The company claims that it has developed a hard disk with two heads that prevents disk files published on the Web from being altered by hackers. Scarabs put two heads on the hard disk, a read-only head that is connected via one cable to a Web server for people to browse content on the disk file and a read/write head that is connected by another cable to a PC for administrators who renew the data. Internet users have access to the disk file only through the read-only head and so there is no physical way they can go into the system and rewrite the data.

  • Illegal XP owners beware, Microsoft has quite a suprise planned - Currently, Microsoft is in the works of completely rewriting the algorithm for the way Windows XP Corporate keys are generated, and is rewriting the code for Windows XP to recognize this new algorithm. This new code will be an added `feature' of Service Pack 1 due out later this year. At the present moment, an upgrade to Windows XP SP1 from Windows XP with no SP installation will not give any problems or errors about an invalid CD-Key on a corporate version of Windows XP. This is because the new algorithm feature has been switched off in SP1 upgrades. To get to see this new feature, you would have to slipstream SP1 into the Windows XP installation media and setup Windows. Once you've reached the CD-key, no current Corporate Windows XP key (none of the 75 that we've tried) will work, as they are all invalid. Even if a corporate key is managed to be found, the chances of it working when SP1 final comes out are slim to none, as Microsoft is rumored to `still be working on the algorithm for SP1 for Corporate customers'.

ATI Radeon 9700 Announced - tech
(hx) 01:16 PM CEST - Jul,18 2002 - Post a comment / read (8)
As promised ATI today launched its R300 product line with ATI Radeon 9700 card (110 million transistors) as well as a new budget card Radeon 9000 (Pro). Although the cards are priced to perform against NVIDIA's GeForce4 MX line, their performance is more in line with the GeForce4 Ti4200 card. The Radeon 9000 cards feature a complete implementation of DirectX 8.1 as well as full vertex and pixel shader support. The Radeon 9700 will be in stores no later than 30-days from now. The card retails for a MSRP of $399 and with all that ATI has been able to show us that far, we have no reason not to believe them on this. The estimated street cost for a Radeon 9000 is $109 where the Radeon 9000 Pro is $129. The King is dead. All hail the new King! You can also check ATi 9700's articles from Toms's Hardware, AnandTech and HardOCPIn order to understand a little bit more about the Radeon 9700, GameSpy has conducted an interview with with David Nalasco, Technology Marketing Manager, and Eric Lungren, Product Manager as they anwer questions regarding to this next generation video card and the technology behind it. Here is a snip:
GameSpy: Is compatibility with DirectX 9 completely hardware dependent or can it be achieved with drivers updates?
David/Eric: It’s all hardware dependent. In the same sense that a DirectX game will run on a GeForce4 MX card, you’ll only get the features that were already available in DirectX 7. The same is true for the high-end GeForce cards. While DirectX 9 games will run on them, only the features implemented in DirectX 8.1 will be present. Features written for DirectX 9 will simply be disabled. This is because each version of DirectX has to be backwards compatible, but as new features are added [like floating point calculations], new hardware must be created to take advantage of it.

  • Kaya And NV30 -  NVIDIA recently held their annual stockholders meeting and during it their CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, reaffirmed that NV30 would be on a .13um silicon process as it was "impossible to make on .15um" and that it would also be here this fall.  They mentioned the NV30 several times, and showed references to it on several slides. One of the slides showed a schedule for chip releases, and it showed the NV18 and NV28 showing up in what appeared to be the August/Sept time frame, and NV30 appearing in Oct/Nov (approximate, the slide was marked in quarterly increments). The slide also mentioned how many transistors were on each chip: NV18: 81 million / NV28: 86 M / NV30: 120 M. They stated that they thought the NV30 was going to be the biggest revolution in 3D graphics in the last 10 years.  At a later part of the presentation, they stated that NV30 was on TSMC's 0.13um process that had copper interconnects. It was an FSG process (i.e. no low-k dielectrics were being used). I believe that Jen Hsun said the only part coming this Fall that was 0.13um was the NV30, the other parts are 0.15um. Also, the NV30 would fully support DX9 (thanks Sancheuz, source: NVNews)

  • Matrox Parhelia 128 MBytes Video Card Review - As compared with the previous products from Matrox, this is a super-revolution! It even makes no sense to give specs of the G400/450/550. But as compared with the current solutions from ATI (RADEON 8500) and NVIDIA (GeForce4 Ti) the Parhelia looks quite modest. Although 16 texture units place this chip on a higher level, our tests will show that almost no applications can work with the multitexturing mode of "4 pipelines X 4 texture units".

  • Nvidia NV30 & NV40 Details - I've received some information regarding the NV30, NV31 and some insight of the NV40 Nvidia is working on. First off though, the NV30 is AGP 8X and it's still a go with 900MHz DDR memory. Also what is now known is that the NV30 is multi chip capable. The number of chips is an odd number. That's all I can say without giving out the exact number. I'll say this though. It's under 8. With regards to FSAA performance the NV30 has a zero (0) performance cost using 4X FSAA. Specifications have been discussed and the NV30 is able to churn out 16 textures/pixel per pass. The NV30 also uses a 4-1 colour compression technique. Nvidia has explained to us/me that the performance we all will see with the NV30 is about double the performance of the Xbox/GF Ti4600. Another feature that is not known to the public is the use of IEE 1394 or known as Firewire will be on NV30 video cards. (source: 3DChipset).

  • Windows 2000 SP3 Delayed - Microsoft has delayed the third service pack for Windows 2000--Service Pack 3 (SP3)-for an indefinite period of time, according to internal documents I viewed over the weekend. Win2K was originally due July 17, but Microsoft recently discovered several major bugs in its Microsoft Installer (MSI) 2.0 code, which was to have been bundled with the update. So now the company will remove MS 2.0 from SP3 and include the older version, MSI 1.1, instead, unless feedback from its beta testers and partners indicates that MSI 2.0 must be included. This indecision, obviously, will adversely affect the release schedule for SP3.

  • The Spy Inside Your Cell Phone - Every new technology gives birth to new security and privacy fears. When mobile phones first started gaining popularity in the late '80s and early '90s, it seemed anyone who could navigate a Radio Shack could put together a little receiver to intercept random cell traffic from the air. Although carriers have made it a little harder to do that today, the sense that some conversations are better had in person, or over a wired line, has not disappeared.

Racing games are currently becoming quite popular, and a keyboard or even a gamepad does not immerse you into the racing mood. What you really need is a racing system with the steering wheels, pedals and shifter to feel like you're in the game. Chaps at Rage3D have posted their review of a full racing system from ACT-LABS. One package was the Force RS Racing System with steering wheel and small pedals, one was the Performance Pedals, and the last was the USB Shifter. Here is a taster:
First, we have the Force RS Racing System. It comes with a steering wheel, some decent pedals, instructions, accessories and cables, and a copy of Rally Championship (the box says Need For Speed III). This package alone contains everything you need to get racing on your computer.
Take a look at that beauty! The material wrap around the wheel is not leather, but it sure has the look and feel of it. There are eleven buttons on the steering wheel overall; 7 on the wheel, 3 on the platform, and one middle horn button. There are also two F1-style paddle shifters.

  • Russia proposes sending team to Mars - Russian space officials proposed an ambitious project on Friday to send a six-person team to Mars by the year 2015, a trip that would mark a milestone in space travel and international space cooperation. Russia's space program hopes to work closely with the American agency NASA and the European Space Agency to build two spaceships capable of transporting the crew to Mars, supporting them on the planet for up to two months and safely bringing them home, said Nikolai Anfimov, head of the Central Research Institute of Machine-Building. The roughly 440-day trip is expected to cost about $20 billion, with Russia suggesting it would contribute 30 percent.

The system is to be tested along the city's oceanfront resort strip this holiday weekend, and police hope to have it fully operational in two to three weeks.

  • Greek ban on gaming threatens Internet cafes - A Register reader in Greece emails us claiming that the Greek government has effectively outlawed Internet cafes by "all LAN and Internet games and any kind of game that is supported by electrical, electronic or software means." • Nanotechnology Coming! - Nanotechnology focuses on the miniature, but one thing about it is massive: the hype. Boosters have long panted about a coming age of tiny machines that will enhance human intelligence, cure disease, wipe out poverty -- and create fortunes. The National Nanotechnology Initiative, a federally backed research program, has forecast that nanotech will spawn a $1 trillion market by 2015. The froth has sparked an inevitable backlash: Some doubters now dismiss nanotech as sci-fi fantasy and a business bust in waiting.
  • Are Holograms Finally for Real? - Such startlingly lifelike projections are so compelling a technology -- as we saw when R2-D2 emitted his "Help me, Obi-Wan" hologram of Princess Leia 25 years ago in the original Star Wars -- that it's difficult to imagine a future in which they're not ubiquitous. It's the present that's the problem. Until now, holograms have been little more than second-rate gimmicks, thanks to the fact that holographically creating anything more than small, washed-out images has proved exceedingly expensive and time-consuming. But that's about to change.

  • Lian Li PC-9300 review - I've just checked out Lian Li's entrant in the very very stylish desktop case, or alternatively computer that won't look too out-of-place among your hi-fi components sector of the market. • Microsoft's Freon project is an Xbox, with extras - What   Freon stands for is a souped-up successor to the Xbox console — capable of playing games but also offering television capabilities, such as pausing live TV and recording shows onto a computer hard drive, say people familiar with the effort. Such a device, which could cost around $500, would have another big advantage: It could beat video-game market leader Sony Corp. to the punch.

  • Xbox mod-chips still on the menu - Last week we reported on Xbox mod-chip group Enigmah's decision to withdraw its product from the market, citing a consultation with lawyers as its reason for pulling back from the legally delicate area of console modification.  However, it transpires that Enigmah hasn't cancelled its mod-chip plans after all, and the team has merely renamed to "X-ecuter" in order to launch a new chip. This is significantly easier to fit than previous efforts - so easy, in fact, that anyone with a basic knowledge of soldering could do it (unlike previous Xbox chips or the PS2 Messiah chip, which required precision micro-soldering equipment to fit).
  • Intel moves 2.80GHz Pentium 4 into 2002/Q3 - The most recent Intel roadmaps show that the firm is continuing to scale its Pentium 4 chip, with a 2.80GHz processor now slated for this quarter, quarter three.  Intel ascribes the shift to a "healthy" 130 nanometer process and good engineering. That means it's now highly likely that Intel will be able to introduce a 3GHz Pentium 4 for the fourth quarter, as the chip dates shuffle forward.  The 2.80GHz Pentium 4 will kick off at $637, with the 2.66GHz/2.6GHz processor costing $562, and the 2.53GHz/2.5GHz processors dropping to $433, when bought in quantities of 1,000.
  • MSI GeForce 4 Ti 4600 Review - The G4Ti4600-VTD comes with a good line up of games, exceptional software, good performance, and solid overclockability to keep the gamer worried less about frame-rates and more about fragging. The card comes packed with all the connections and software one would need to start manipulating video.

  • ASPI Fix For Windows 2000/XP - I've done a small guide for how to fix ASPI under NT/2K/XP because installing the latest Adaptec ASPI doesn't create some of the necessary keys that many programs, such as AudioCatalyst, CDRWIN, Exact Audio Copy and others need before they can actually discover your drives. This is a problem that has been annoying the hell out of a lot of friends of mine, so I thought there must be many others out there grieving over lack of AudioCatalyst functionality if nothing else.

Because it's so small and has everything good about the full-featured ICQ made easy, it's the perfect version to send to your friends and get them on ICQ. It is a new experimental version of the ICQ software and is still under development, may be unstable and is likely to contain bugs. Contains no advertising. First, Rayovac is claiming that these NiMH's will last 2 times longer than any alkaline battery out there, including the "premium" brands such as the Duracell Ultra M3, Energizer e2, etc. and six times longer than a standard Duracell battery. Second, these batteries won't take a memory set and can be recharged up to 1000 times.

Matrox Parhelia Interview - tech
(hx) 11:41 AM CEST - Jun,29 2002 - Post a comment / read (4)
Chaps at Gamers Depot have posted pretty interesting interview with Kamran Ahmed, Matrox's Senior Manager for Technical Marketing and Product Management, as he anwers tough questions regarding to their new Parhelia graphics processor. Here is an excerpt:
GD: We've been told by Matrox representatives that we shouldn't expect to see record-setting frame rates with the current batch of benchmarks (i.e. Quake 3, 3DMark 2001SE, etc). Is there any reason why Matrox didn't try to be the fastest?
Kamran/Matrox: "Sure, we think that the argument that a graphics card’s sole worth should be judged on how high a frame rate it can achieve at 1600x1200 resolution is wrong. We have a different vision. Our vision is that people play games to have fun. Maximum fun is achieved when you are totally immersed in the game and the graphics contribute to that by making the experience as close to reality as possible. This means that the perfect graphics solution would be one that delivers smooth frame rates combined with the absolute highest rendering quality. Frame rates alone are a diminishing return. The difference between 20fps and 30fps is very noticeable. The difference between 60fps and 80fps is less noticeable. The difference between 100fps and 100,000fps is virtually unnoticeable (unless you read the frame rate counter). Think about it this way, if all people truly cared about is achieving the absolute highest frame rate, why not run everything at 320x200? Of course, the reason no one runs at 320x200 is that the image quality is far too low to be acceptable. And while it’s true that running at 1600x1200 provides far better image quality, it is actually a very inefficient way to achieve that increase in image quality. Parhelia offers a better solution. It contains unique new technology that delivers the best image quality at great frame rates. Our Fragment Anti-aliasing is the best example of this, and I’ll talk about that more later. Getting unnecessarily high frame rates on today’s titles is also considered important if it is interpreted as an indication of expected performance on future titles that may be more demanding than existing titles. While there is truth to this argument, keep in mind that many of these future titles will make different demands on graphics hardware than the titles of today. For these, the Parhelia integrates a large amount of technology that is sitting idle in many of today's applications: Quad Texturing, Quad DirectX9.0 Vertex Shaders, 5 pixel shader units per pixel pipe, Hardware Displacement Mapping, etc. Not every future application will benefit from all of these features, but many certainly will.

But going back to the most important thing - which is the overall fun factor you experience today – I must mention our Surround Gaming feature which - simply put - makes games more fun than any other graphics feature that has been introduced in a long time. You have to experience it to really feel its full impact, but the concept is pretty straightforward. Humans see wider than they see tall. Surround Gaming saturates your entire field of view and dramatically increases your feeling of immersion.
