AMD Rejects Ryzen 9 7950X3D Warranty Claim After CPU Swelling - tech
(hx) 12:25 PM CEST - Jun,08 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
A Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPU failed with visible swelling on the substrate after the system suddenly shut down with a loud pop while idle in April 2026.

The PC, built in May 2023 with a Gigabyte X670E AORUS MASTER motherboard and no manual overclocking or voltage tweaks, was inspected by Gigabyte — the board passed all tests with a replacement CPU.

AMD reviewed photos and rejected the warranty claim, stating it showed “visible human-caused damage” and that physical damage is not covered.

The swelling may be linked to early 2023 AM5 platform voltage issues that were later addressed by BIOS updates capping SoC voltage at 1.3V.

The original BIOS version is unknown after a reflash, so it remains unclear if the system was running an affected early firmware.

Users are advised to keep BIOS updated and carefully review warranty terms for physical damage exclusions.

Meta Quietly Adds Facial Recognition Code to Smart Glasses App - tech
(hx) 10:19 AM CEST - Jun,07 2026 - Post a comment / read (5)
Meta has embedded dormant facial recognition technology called 'NameTag' into its Meta AI companion app, which powers Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses and has been downloaded more than 50 million times.

Researchers discovered the hidden feature in recent app updates, which can detect faces via the glasses’ camera, create digital face profiles (faceprints), and alert the wearer when someone is recognized.

Meta confirmed the code exists but stated the feature is currently turned off, not available to users, and the company has not decided whether to launch it or build a central face database.

The discovery contradicts Meta’s earlier public statements that it was still “thinking through” facial recognition for the glasses.

Privacy experts and users have raised alarms over potential surveillance risks, especially since the app is required for core smart glasses functions.

The story, first reported by WIRED, highlights growing concerns about how big tech quietly integrates powerful AI features into consumer devices.

$69 '16TB' eBay Drive Scam: Tiny Chip Pretends to Be Massive Storage - tech
(hx) 11:30 AM CEST - Jun,06 2026 - Post a comment / read (1)
A X post is warning buyers about suspiciously cheap "16TB" external drives selling for just $69 on eBay — and the video inside reveals the classic scam.

**How the trick works:** Scammers take a tiny real flash memory chip (often just 4GB to 64GB, like a small microSD card) and put it inside a normal-looking external drive enclosure. They then reprogram (hack) the drive's controller firmware so the computer thinks it's a massive 16TB drive.

When you plug it in, Windows or macOS happily shows the fake huge capacity. You can write data up to the *real* small size without issues. Once you exceed the actual storage, the drive starts looping back and overwriting the beginning of the data — silently corrupting everything you’ve saved.

This is why these drives often pass initial tests but fail when you actually try to use the full advertised space. Tools like **H2testw** (Windows) or **f3** (Mac/Linux) can quickly expose the fraud by writing and verifying data.
5-Year-Old SSD Still Healthy - But Performance Tanked. Here's Why - tech
(hx) 11:05 AM CEST - Jun,06 2026 - Post a comment / read (2)
An XDA editor who ran the same M.2 NVMe SSD as his primary boot drive for five years discovered that performance issues like slower boot times, game loading hitches, and reduced transfer speeds weren't caused by hardware failure.

Despite the drive maintaining over 90% of its rated write endurance (TBW), the real culprits were reaching 80-90% capacity, which triggered write amplification and exhausted the fast SLC cache.

Neglected Windows TRIM functionality and occasional thermal throttling from poor cooling also contributed to the slowdowns.

Importantly, these problems stemmed from data management and usage patterns rather than physical wear, meaning the SSD could be revived without replacement.

The author’s experience highlights that modern SSDs are highly durable, but they require proactive maintenance to stay fast over years of heavy use.
If you're experiencing any of these problems, then fear not, as there are ways that you can try and restore your day one speeds. First things first: verify your drive's true wear state. Download a clean, vendor-neutral hardware utility like CrystalDiskInfo and check the health status percentage and total bytes written metric. If it's above 80%, your drive's physical flash chips are mathematically perfectly healthy, so it's not the silicone itself that's causing the issues.

Another step to take is to enforce the 15% overprovisioning rule. You have to be ruthless with your storage. Delete old games, clear your downloads folder, and force your drive's capacity back down to below 85% utilization, giving the flash controller breathing room. Instantly, it restores its dynamic write cache. Keep this in mind going forward, too. Rid of files you no longer need or uninstall games you haven't played in a while.

You can manually force an OS trim sequence to rectify some of the issues, too. To do this, open the Windows Start menu, type "Defragment and optimize drives," and open the utility. Select your primary SSD and click Optimize. This forces Windows to shoot a massive, long-overdue trim command sequence down the PCIe link.

Running a thermal audit can also be super beneficial. Check for controller thermal throttling by running a heavy benchmark such as CrystalDiskMark while monitoring HWiNFO64. If your drives' controller temps spike past 75°C, the drive is throttling its own speed to prevent overheating. Reseat your motherboard's M.2 aluminum heat sink or swap out a dried-up thermal pad for $5.
