  • AMD Accuses Intel of Destroying Evidence in Antitrust Trial - AMD filed a brief with US District Court Judge Joseph J. Farnan, Jr. accusing Intel of having destroyed e-mails and other documentation that may have been important to its antitrust case. • Another AACS Device Key Found, AnyDVD backups Blue-Rays! - Another user of the Doom9 Forum, whose members have been actively working to develop a system to subvert AACS copy protection, has apparently discovered in a memory dump a legitimate device key. The source of the key appears to be CyberLink PowerDVD; and another forum user was able to use a published AACS formula to validate its authenticity.
  • Apple plugs eight QuickTime holes - Apple has released a new version of its QuickTime software, partly to repair eight serious security vulnerabilities. Apple confirmed that the vulnerabilities make both Macs and Windows PCs susceptible to malicious files which, when opened with QuickTime, could give the attacker full control over a computer running the software.

Windows Vista cracked totally! - tech
(hx) 09:24 AM CET - Mar,05 2007 - Post a comment / read (4)
Late last week news of a 'brute force' keygen for Vista proliferated across the Internet. There were reports that after a few hours it could return a number of valid keys. But there's an activation circumvention method from another team of hackers. And this one could cause MS a bit more trouble. The new hack exploits Vista's System Locked Pre-installation 2 (SLP2) mechanism. SLP2 allows favoured OEMs to avoid users having to activate their Vista installs. SLP2 combines an OEM specific certificate on the Vista installation media, along with appropriate markers in the machine's BIOS (specifically, in the ACPI_SLIC table) and an appropriate product key. With all three, Vista sees the system as pre-activated and doesn't do any further activation process. The hack is basically a BIOS emulator, which exists as a system driver (so does that make X64 editions immune?), serving up the correct BIOS data to the Vista licensing system when required. Combine this with the appropriate certificate and key for the version of Vista and OEM BIOS - bang goes the activation mechanism.

But liquid water is much more complex than that. Among its many properties, water also can absorb large amounts of heat before it begins to get hot, and it releases heat slowly during cooling. Otherwise, pools of water, from puddles to oceans, might boil during the day or freeze solid at night, regardless of the season

  • Vista Offers Nothing to Gamers - If you use your PC for gaming primarily, I see no reason to upgrade to Vista just yet. Sure, it's pretty to look at, and it has that "new" shine to it, but ultimately it's less stable than XP overall for gaming. In related news, Nvidia announced that it plans to release a new set of beta ForceWare graphics drivers for Windows Vista 'in the next few days.' The drivers will finally bring SLI support for GeForce 7- and GeForce 6-series graphics cards. Also on the menu will be performance improvements in OpenGL games, performance improvements for SLI setups running at high resolutions, and fixes for many bugs.
  • Vista Brute Force Keygen -  It is a simple brute force attack, dumb as a rock that just tries keys. If it gets one, you manually have to check it and try activation. Is is ugly, takes hours, is far from point and click, but it is said to work!

The approach, which only works given physical access to the hardware and is strictly for fun, relies on a taking advantage of a vulnerability in the Xbox 360 hypervisor. Properly exploited, the bug allows tinkerers to run arbitrary code (even an alternative OS) with full privileges and full hardware access. Full details on the ingenious exploit, including proof of concept code, were published on BugTraq on Wednesday.

  • AMD Athlon64 X2 5200+ vs. Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 CPU -  The Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 is very well priced at around $220 US. It comes clocked at 2.13GHz and features the 2MB L2 cache. Amazingly the 5200+ now costs just $220 US, this processor is clocked at 2.60GHz and also features a 2MB L2 cache. So now the real question is for around $220 US which processor presents itself as the best value solution?

  • Kingston HyperX & OCZ FlexXLC DDR2-800MHz memory  - The OCZ FlexXLC PC 6400 CAS-4 looks fantastic, but to some its looks may seem somewhat over the top. It may look fancy but this 140g RAM oozes quality (it's over 3.5x heavier than a stick of Kingston) and this is the only factory-fitted watercooled memory available.
  • More ATi RV630 Cards Details - It is based on 65nm process, supports 2nd gen. Unified Shader, DX10, SM 4.0, 128-bit memory interface, Dual HDCP engine. There are 3 variants; GDDR4, GDDR3 and GDDR2 codenamed Kohinoor, Orloff and Sefadu respectively.

  • Symantec Releases Norton 360 - Symantec today announced the availability of Norton 360, a solution that combines antivirus, antispyware, firewall, intrusion protection, anti-phishing, backup and tune-up, eliminating the need to purchase and manage multiple products. I think the title of this article should be Norton renames Norton SystemWorks to Norton 360. It's exactly the same list of features. This is an obvious marketing ploy :-)

  • Sony Comments On PAL Backwards Compatibility - The controversy over the lack of backwards compatibility on PAL PS3s is picking up and recent comments from Sony executives aren’t helping the situation. We've had two statements now, one from SCEE and one from SCE Australia, and both go out of their way to emphasize that you won't need your PS2 games because of what the PS3 can do. That doesn't sound like a commitment to backwards compatibility, it sounds like they're covering their asses. In other news, Sony announces the pricing for their first party title Sony PS3 launch line-up. Pricing will be set at €59.99 (£39.99, AUD 99.95, NZ 109.95). First party games include Motorstorm and Resistance: Fall of Man. No big surprise here.

Supreme Commander Retail Performance - tech
(hx) 02:50 PM CET - Feb,21 2007 - Post a comment / read (2)
Legion Hardware performed some benchmarks to see how the retail, full edition of Gas Powered Games' Supreme Commander stacks up against today's computer hardware:
The graphics card is obviously another key component to improving performance, though unfortunately the latest and greatest solutions again do not guarantee stellar performance. Having said that, anything less than a Radeon X1950 Pro is going to make life difficult when playing on the larger maps with more than 2 players. In fact, using the low quality settings at 1280x1204 saw the X1950 Pro render just 24fps on average. The ultra powerful GeForce 8800 GTX was not a great deal better, producing an average frame rate of just 31fps. The maximum in-game quality settings saw the 8800 GTX fall to an average frame rate of just 22fps.

Based on the results we recorded it is clear the GeForce 8800 GTX is being limited by something else, most likely the processor. Looking at the high quality Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 results we see that anything faster than the Radeon X1950 Pro (7900 GTX, X1950XTX, 8800 GTS and 8800 GTX) benefits greatly from higher processor frequencies. The average frame rates continued to climb when using these four graphics cards, as the processor frequency was increased. The very same thing, possibly to a greater degree, was found when testing the AMD Athlon64 X2 processors.

Therefore, it is clear that this game is heavily reliant on raw processing power, probably more so than rendering power, though they are both very important. What I did notice; and for those wondering why we only tested with 2GB's of DDR2 memory and did not use 1GB and 4GB configurations, please let me explain. In the past we have tried to prove the worth of 2GB memory kits when compared to smaller 1GB kits. While we could physically tell the difference when playing games, the average frame rates never really seemed to change, at least not enough to justify the added cost. Unfortunately, when moving from 2GB's of memory to 4GB's with Windows Vista, the same problem presents itself.

Nevertheless, using Windows XP first I did test Supreme Commander with 1GB of memory which was just plain awful and then 2GB's which, was a vast improvement. However, after having measured the performance with 1GB and then 2GB's of memory, I noticed the frame rates hardly changed, with results increasing as little as 2 ~ 3fps. Therefore, I did not want to include more pages of graphs that show near no difference in performance and rather decided to discuss this issue. After testing these two memory configurations in Windows XP it was time to compare 2GB and 4GB memory configurations in Windows Vista.

Supreme Commander Performance - tech
(hx) 09:17 AM CET - Feb,14 2007 - Post a comment / read (7)
This means it is possible to play Supreme Commander with a GeForce 6600 GT if you are prepared to play at 1024x768 with low quality settings.
Legion Hardware has a piece up checking out performance in Gas Powered Games' Supreme Commander.  They use a E6700, 2 gigs of ram and video cards ranging from Geforce 6600 to 8800 GTX. Here's an excerpt:
Supreme Commander will be available on the 20th of this month and if you are going to grab yourself a copy, keep in mind that this game is not even half as good with low quality settings as it is with high quality settings. Of course when the game is finally released, the game performance might be a little less taxing than what we have seen here today, though I very much doubt it. In fact I really believe that our results are some what conservative given we were never heavily engaged with the AI (Artificial Intelligence). With a rather limited amount of units on a small map I really do not believe we pushed this game anywhere near its limits.

Imagine a map two or three times bigger with more than twice as many players engaging in a non-stop battle. Surely this will be far more demanding when compared to the demo we tested here today. Another thing to keep in mind is that all our tests were run on a relatively high-end Core 2 Duo system with 2GB’s of DDR2 memory. While we are not going to test more platforms until the full version is released, it will be interesting to see how the GeForce 7900GS for example and even the GeForce 8800 GTX cards, handle themselves on slower platforms.

Back when we first looked at Company of Heroes the results were a little surprising and we found that with medium quality settings even a GeForce 7300GT paired with an Athlon64 3800+ processor could deliver reasonable performance. However, Supreme Commander is obviously a lot more demanding, as even the 7600GT was unable to handle medium quality settings. The performance differences between the 7900GS and X1950 Pro were very small as both graphics cards produced very similar results. Surprisingly, both were limited to 1024x768 with high quality settings enabled.

I just received an email from THQ saying: "the Supreme Commander DVD-ROM is now available at all GameStop and EB Games stores nationwide. While supplies last, gamers who pre-order this massive RTS gaming experience will receive a DVD containing the following content: Collectible lenticular postcard with a message from Chris Taylor, The Making of Supreme Commander Video Documentary, Video mission briefing with Chris Taylor, 3 original tracks from the game, Fan website kit  and Exclusive wallpapers." Supreme Commander will be available at retail outlets nationwide on February 20, 2007. On the same day there will be a demo released for the PC version of Command& Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. I don't know what the demo will contain but I'll have it up for download on here.

  • Nvidia talks nForce2, nForce3 Vista support - Nvidia Platform Products PR Manager Bryan Del Rizzo has e-mailed TechReport saying, 'There is a known issue with ATI AGP cards and nForce3 and Vista. This is currently being looked into and will most likely be resolved with a MCP driver update' Del Rizzo adds that nForce3- and nForce2-based systems can run Vista using built-in Microsoft drivers and third-party audio chipset drivers. There is one notable exception, though: storage support. Nvidia RAID is just plain not supported, and Del Rizzo says there are 'known Vista issues with some ATAPI devices.'

  • The end of anonymity on the Internet? - Over 20 million PCs worldwide are equipped with a tiny security chip called the Trusted Platform Module, although it is as yet rarely activated. But once merchants and other online services begin to use it, the TPM will do something never before seen on the Internet: provide virtually fool-proof verification that you are who you say you are. Ed.note: The TPM chip is considered by the computer and the BIOS like any other integrated peripheral on your mobo like your onboard sound/NIC/Firewire ports. It can be disabled in BIOS and if what I've seen from my work with HP laptops the chip can actually be physically removed from the board.
  • Flaws discovered in IE, Firefox could lead to data - In a fairly rare event, two flaws have been simultaneously discovered that affect the two most popular browsers in the world in similar fashions. Available in both DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 speeds, the 'OCZ Vista Upgrade' series probably doesn't do anything that other OCZ RAM can't, but having 4GB kits available is quite novel, at least for desktops.

New features aside, the new Catalyst drivers fix bugs related to Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, the Catalyst Control Center, and Windows Vista itself.  FYI, there is no OpenGL support when running in Crossfire mode (and AFR mode is not ready yet) and performance is still anywhere from 1 - 10% slower than Windows XP in various games.

Vista Gaming Performance - tech
(hx) 11:25 PM CET - Jan,29 2007 - Post a comment / read (3)
TechGage took a few popular games through the benchmarks on Windows Vista. How does Microsoft's new operating system affect gaming performance? In some cases quite a bit, in other cases not much at all. It looks like it's very dependant on what game you are running. Here's an excerpt:
As with most articles of this nature, we can't fully give a conclusion because so many factors come into play. Though as it stands, we can learn a lot from this simple round of tests. First is the fact that Vista is not going to be an OS for an ultimate gaming machine anytime soon. This is something that you should consider before you throw a bunch of cash at a new computer and then pick up Vista along with it.

The Vista NVIDIA drivers used during testing were just finalized the other day, the result of a string of tireless days of bug smashing. Vista is not necessarily a harder OS to develop for, but because coders need to learn the new architecture, we can expect to wait a while before our PCs are "perfect". Even with these "final" drivers, SLI is still inoperable and may not be for another few weeks. Even at that time, nobody is going to know whether it's going to equal the performance we currently see on XP. Even with my simple one card testing, we can see there is a lot of work to be done, both with the drivers and perhaps with games developers releasing updates that better support Vista.

So, I've said it before and will say it again. Vista is a good operating system... but it's -far- from being even 90% reliable. When going from an XP machine to Vista, it feels like you just went from a Toyota Celica to a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. The only problem is, that it feels like your new Ferrari borrowed your Celicas engine. We'll let the numbers speak for themselves.

In the end, if you are making the move to Vista and are a gamer, you may as well prepare to partition your hard drive to dual boot. You are not going to want to go through the hassle of making your games run smooth in Vista, or go through the trouble of tweaking to make it happen. Hopefully within the next two months, NVIDIAs drivers will be much more refined and -all- games should run as they do on XP, or at least close to it. I regret not having an ATI card on hand to perform testing there as well, but it may not be a far stretch to expect a similar experience there.

  • Bizarre Windows promo video (1987) unleashed - According to the actors, W-W-W-Windows/386's main selling point is that it looks "just like OS/2", and it can even allow multitasking. It's easy to see how far we have come in twenty years of hardware upgrades: Vista's main selling point, after all, is that it looks just like OS/X and can it take advantage of multicore processors to allow multitasking :-) FYI, the first independent version of Microsoft Windows, version 1.0, released in November 1985, lacked a degree of functionality and achieved little popularity, and was to compete with Apple's own operating system. Windows 1.0 did not provide a complete operating system; rather, it extended MS-DOS. Microsoft Windows version 2.0 was released in November, 1987 and was slightly more popular than its predecessor. Windows 2.03 (release date January 1988) had changed the OS from tiled Windows to overlapping Windows. The result of this change led to Apple Computer filing a suit against Microsoft alleging infringement on Apple's copyrights.
