NVIDIA has released a new public ForceWare Windows XP drivers for their GeForce 8800 GTS and GTX series of graphics chips. The 39.2MB drivers (which apparently are separate from the normal ForceWare drivers) can be downloaded at the NVIDIA web site. The 97.94 version also has some fixes (PDF) for various games including Titan Quest Demo and Company of Heroes (SLI).
Single-GPU Issues Resolved:
- The media player hangs when playing MPEG2 HD video clips using overlay in 1080i and then switching to full-screen mode.
- Added application profile for "Titan Quest Demo.exe" to support the current demo version.
- The system crashes after four or more suspend/resume cycles.

SLI Mode Issues Resolved
- Company of Heroes, SLI: Screen corruption occurs when "Enhance the Application Setting" mode is set to 4x or 8x in the NVIDIA Control
Panel.

For older cards, try out these modified Forceware 101.02 2000/XP (32-bit) drivers from Guru3D.

  • Supreme Commander Quad-Core Performance - If you want the best gaming experience possible, an Intel Core 2 Quad quad-core processor will provide it. However, if you have dual-core, an acceptable gaming experience can still be achieved. With dual-core it would be more advantageous to stick with Windows XP for now since it provides faster performance
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. performance enhancements/SLI coming for GeForce 8 users - FiringSquad reports that NVIDIA is hard at work on developing a new ForceWare driver for GeForce 8800 users that will bring performance enhancements as well as SLI support for S.T.A.L.K.E.R
  • GeForce 8800 Ultra In May; G84 & G86 Firmed For April Launch - NVIDIA is pretty confident that GeForce 8800 Ultra can beat Radeon X2900 XTX. Well, we we will see how much performance can ATi engineers tweak out of the R600 launch drivers.
  • SAMSUNG Introduces 64GB 1.8inch Solid State Drive - Expect this to cost well over a thousand dollars if you can buy it separately. The 32GB model added at least $900 to the laptops that offered it (mostly subnotebooks only available in Korea and Japan). Flash prices are dropping, but getting that much Flash running in parallel to offer that kind of read/write speed is still expensive, and will be for a few years yet. Unfortunately.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. GPU Performance @ HardSpell - tech
(hx) 09:24 PM CEST - Mar,27 2007 - Post a comment / read (1)
1024x768 definition is current mainstream one and lower than many LCD basic settings, but except the mainstream-top segment display cards the other cannot satisfy its demands any more
The chaps over at HardSpell take a critical look at performance in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl with a sample of nine mainstream new graphics cards four from Nvidia and five from ATI:
- The loading time is too long and demand on video memory and memory capacity too high. If you want to play this game smoothly, you have to prepare a 512MB video memory display card (7900GS at least) or 2GB memory or long time waiting.

- AA effects are bad and it didn't support HDR+AA -  If you want to open AA you must turn the light and shadow effects to lowest and this will cause the other options closed automatically. HDR+AA is most of the game developers used now. It seems that Stalker still rest on several years ago FarCry HDR level. So you have to improved definition (ensure your equipments are good enough) or low the light and shadow effects to open 4x AA which equals to the other games 2x effect.

- Vision far scene effect failure, shader layer upon layer

- Physics effect miss

- Shoot feeling is bad  - It didn't extrude the true feeling or adapt to the game, it is really difficult to aim and shoot.

- The hardware demands are too high - though the equipments are really high, the fps won't improve a lot. The same scene fps different a lot cause the game equipments unbalanced. So we draw a conclusion that this game didnt optimize the new generation display cards well. Besides Geforce 8800GTX, we felt Radeon X1000 and Geforce 7 series didn't exerted their best performances.

  • Nvidia to delay its G84, G86 graphics chips? - It looks like Nvidia's upcoming G84 and G86 graphics processors have slipped behind schedule.
  • NVIDIA G80: General Performance Analysis - GeForce 8800 GTS generally outperforms GeForce 7950 GX2 in games at common resolutions and the cost of applying the higher levels of G80's AA ability are sufferable in many titles. Further, it appears NVIDIA are working with Microsoft to allow Direct3D to correctly expose coverage sample AA (CSAA) via the API, negating one of the criticisms we had during the initial look where we mentioned CSAA is less effective if the user has to enable it outside of a game.

According to the company, CLEFIA is strong enough to defend content against 'known cryptoanalytic attacks.'
  • Apple TV hacked to run XviD, other formats -  Installing the SSH server Dropbear, the video container Perian, and a custom script lets the Apple TV play files outside of its normal MPEG-4 and H.264 standards
  • Vista Sales Double That Of WinXP? - Microsoft just announced that Windows Vista has sold 20 million copies since its release. That is 3 million more than Windows XP did in its first two months. Is it much of a surprise for anyone considering that XP was released around a year after the Windows ME and 2000 launches, where Vista made users wait for five years? Quite frankly I would have to say no, its not much of a surprise at all. :-P
  • Exploit published for gaping (patched) IE hole - If you haven't applied the 'critical' patch in Microsoft's MS07-009 bulletin, now might be a good time to hit that download-and-install button. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. GPU Performance-mainstream cards - tech
(hx) 02:17 PM CEST - Mar,26 2007 - Post a comment / read (4)
Wondering which mainstream graphics cards perform best with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl? The chaps over at FiringSquad have rounded up over a dozen different ATI and NVIDIA graphics cards. Along the way they also discuss topics such as 256MB vs. 512MB of memory, SLI/CrossFire performance, and the game's dynamic lighting model.
S.TA.L.K.E.R. is a very demanding game graphically, but fortunately you can get good frame rates with the game with today's latest mainstream graphics cards. You can find GeForce 7600 GS cards for right around $100 at many online retailers, while PriceGrabber listings for the Radeon X1300 XT start under $100. Unfortunately neither of these cards were quite able to hit what we'd consider playable frame rates with dynamic lighting enabled, but with a few more tweaks to our config file and a little bit of overclocking (the 7600 GS can typically hit 7600 GT speeds especially with better cooling) we think frame rates in the 30 fps range would have been possible, especially at 1280x1024.

If you can afford to spend $150, the Radeon X1950 GT is pretty hard to beat at that price point for S.TA.L.K.E.R. The X1950 GT isn't quite as fast as its predecessor, the X1900 GT, but as we discussed in our Sapphire X1950 GT review, these cards are based on the exact same GPU used in the X1950 Pro, so it's not hard to get more performance out of these chips with a little bit of overclocking. In the US Sapphire is the only board partner bringing the X1950 GT to market at this point, while in Europe and Asia Palit and TUL are the sole card manufacturers. NVIDIA's GeForce 7900 GS also performs well, but at stock speeds it isn't quite as fast as the Radeon X1950 GT. A factory overclocked 7900 GS card would no doubt fare better in S.TA.L.K.E.R.

Moving higher up the price bracket, the Radeon X1900 XT 256MB and GeForce 7900 GTO really stand out. Unfortunately neither one of these cards can be found either online or at retail very easily anymore, they've basically been replaced by the Radeon X1950 XT 256MB and the GeForce 7950 GT. We don't have a Radeon X1950 XT 256MB for testing, but considering that the X1900 XT 256MB outperformed the GeForce 7950 GT, the X1950 XT 256MB should be the faster card. Of course, keep in mind that the GeForce 7950 GT we tested was running at stock speeds, and many of NVIDIA's board partners have chosen to overclock their 7950 GT cards from the factory for enhanced performance, so it's quite possible that one of these OC'ed 7950 GT boards could give the ATI card a run for its money.

Sitting alone at the very upper echelon of the mainstream graphics cards we tested is NVIDIA's GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB. Clearly the GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB is the fastest sub-$300 graphics card you can buy for S.TA.L.K.E.R. today; with the card delivering performance that was over 25% greater than the next closest competitor at 1600x1200. It really isn't even close. Besides performance, the GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB has other intangibles going for it such as its added AA modes and low noise. It really is a great card for the gamer on a strict sub-$300 budget.

What about power consumption and energy efficiency? Can any of these processors stand up under the weight of killer new games like Supreme Commander?
  • AMD may cut prices yet again next month? - This time the chipmaker isn't getting rid of its 90nm processors as fast as it would like. While it waits for Chartered Semiconductor to begin production of 65nm Athlons-which is expected to begin 'soon'-AMD will supposedly cut prices in its entry-level 90nm lineup next month.
