WTF Just Happened? The Corrupt Memory Industry & Micron - tech
(hx) 11:26 AM CET - Dec,06 2025 - Post a comment / read (2)
Micron has sold out consumers and terminated its consumer line of house brand memory products, Crucial, to focus on the illusory two-lettered god of money, AI. This comes at a time when Micron is raking-in record tax breaks, government subsidies, and taxpayer money, which it apparently is choosing to then pass on primarily to its megacorporate "AI" customers. The situation leaves consumers high and dry, again, by an industry with a corrupt past wrought with fraud and price fixing. The memory industry is primarily comprised of Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, and with only 3 companies controlling effectively all relevant memory supply, once unspoken gentleman's agreements have now become simple public statements that could signal to "competitors" what the next move is.

Micron to Exit Crucial Consumer Business, Ending Retail SSD and DRAM Sales - tech
(hx) 11:35 PM CET - Dec,03 2025 - Post a comment / read (3)
Micron Technology is ending the consumer-oriented branch of Crucial — that means that by February 2026, Micron will stop selling Crucial-branded SSDs and DRAM modules to retail and distribution channels worldwide. The company says this pivot is driven by soaring demand for memory and storage solutions in AI-powered data centers, where enterprise-grade DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) are far more profitable than consumer products. While Crucial products will remain available during the transition and existing warranties will continue to be honored, Micron will funnel its capacity and R&D into enterprise and commercial segments instead of personal computing. This move marks roughly three decades of Crucial’s presence on the consumer market — a significant shift for PC builders, gamers, and anyone buying affordable RAM or SSDs.

GPU Prices Crater Before Inevitable Opportunity to Screw Consumers - tech
(hx) 04:19 PM CET - Dec,01 2025 - Post a comment / read (2)
GPU pricing has cratered since June and March of this year, and it's just in time for DRAM shortages and VRAM prices to go up. The rumor is that NVIDIA will stop bundling memory with GPUs to partners, which we worry will result in worse partner pricing for board vendors and higher prices (while giving an advantage to the first-party NVIDIA FE cards). The good news is that prices have fallen, so at least for now, things have improved. The MSRP is still too high in a lot of cases, but it's certainly better than the huge price overhead on top of MSRP back in June. This video goes through the pricing updates for NVIDIA's RTX 50 series GPUs, AMD's RX 9070 XT and 9070 GPUs, and Intel's B580 and B570 video cards. High-end cards like NVIDIA's RTX 5090 have only gone up in price, and that one will also be most impacted by VRAM price hikes. For anyone looking for the best GPUs to buy for new gaming PCs, this video will help you figure out graphics card pricing.

Tested: Windows 11s 'faster' File Explorer (preloaded) is still slower than Windows 10 - tech
(hx) 10:40 PM CET - Nov,28 2025 - Post a comment / read (5)
On a 4GB RAM test machine, File Explorer used ~32.4MB of RAM without preloading. After turning on preloading, Windows quietly adds ~35MB more. So Explorer now sits at ~67.4MB in memory before you even open it. 35MB isn’t a big deal in 2025. Your browser eats that for breakfast. That's not the point of my testing. Why is the preloaded File Explorer still slower than Windows 10? I'm pretty clear on this. My next operating system on my computer will definitely not be Windows 11 :-)

RIP Windows: Linux GPU Gaming Benchmarks on Bazzite - tech
(hx) 12:56 AM CET - Nov,26 2025 - Post a comment
We're finally benchmarking GPU performance in Linux, first using the Bazzite OS following thousands of community requests specifically for this operating system. A lot of this is exploratory and research for establishing methodology, so we're still learning how to control the platforms and software for this benchmarking. In the very least, this allows us to start generating some exit velocity from Windows for some people. Linux still isn't for everyone. Some users, like our own production machines, are bound to Windows by compatibility requirements with certain software. But gaming has dramatically improved on Linux over the years and is developing fast (despite still having issues), and so it may slowly start to become more viable for gaming users in particular.

Nvidia Drivers V 581.80 vs V 581.94(Hotfix) - Test In 4 Games - tech

Microsoft Will Preload Windows 11 File Explorer to Fix Bad Performance - tech
(hx) 12:58 PM CET - Nov,22 2025 - Post a comment / read (5)
Microsoft has acknowledged that File Explorer on Windows 11 has performance issues, which is concerning for such a crucial application within an operating system. To address this, Microsoft is considering preloading File Explorer in the background to enable quicker access when users open the application. In the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7271 (KB5070307) available in the Dev & Beta channels, Microsoft stated, "We're exploring preloading File Explorer in the background to help improve File Explorer launch performance. This shouldn't be visible to you, outside of File Explorer hopefully launching faster when you need to use it."

If you prefer the traditional behavior, you can disable window preloading. Open File Explorer, navigate to Folder Options, select the View tab, and uncheck Enable window preloading for faster launch times. Microsoft is seeking feedback, and if you encounter any issues, you can report them in the Feedback Hub under Files, Folders and Online Storage > File Explorer Performance or Files, Folders and Online Storage > File Explorer.

Additionally, Microsoft is revamping File Explorer's functionality. The context menu is being refined to reduce clutter while keeping secondary actions accessible. Frequently used commands will remain prominently placed, and related tools have been grouped logically. A new Manage file flyout now includes actions like Compress to ZIP file, Copy as path, Set as desktop background, Rotate right, and Rotate left. Cloud-specific commands such as Always keep on this device and Free up space are now within individual provider flyouts, and the Send to My Phone option has been moved to appear alongside these cloud-based selections. Lastly, Open folder location has been repositioned next to Open and Open with, ensuring quicker and more intuitive access.

Nvidia: Windows 11 25H2, 24H2 Cuts Game Performance - tech
(hx) 05:12 PM CET - Nov,20 2025 - Post a comment
Nvidia says it’s aware of an issue where some games could have “lower performance” after recent Windows updates, and it’s rolling out a new display driver (version 581.94) to address it.

Nvidia confirmed that when KB5066835 (October 2025 Update) or newer (KB5068861, November 2025 Update) is installed, a bug could reduce FPS. This issue was first observed in our tests in October when the Patch Tuesday update shipped, and Nvidia has finally confirmed our reports.
KB5066835 is a Patch Tuesday release, and it is automatically applied on PCs running Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2 (these two are the same platform, so you’re affected regardless). Even if you skipped Windows 11 KB5066835 somehow, you’re still going to experience performance issues because newer releases also include those changes.

The video discusses the impact of rising DRAM prices, primarily driven by AI data center demands, on GPU prices. With a notable increase in DDR5 prices already seen, there are concerns that GPU prices will follow suit due to manufacturing prioritization of high-margin products. Gaming enthusiasts are encouraged to consider purchasing GPUs sooner due to uncertain future price increases.
