ZDNet is reporting that, as standard with all service packs, SP1 will include all the patches and bug fixes that have been released since Windows 7's October debut. In addition, users can expect tweaks and fixes made under the hood, based on user feedback. The only "big" changes that will come with SP1 are USB 3.0 support, and according to InfoWorld, "enhancements to the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi stacks."

He said, " …there is really no loss for the Wii consumer." He continued saying, "But, even more importantly than that, the consumer has voted. Over 26 million consumers have bought a Wii. The consumer is saying, for them, the quality of the visual is not nearly as important as the overall entertainment, the overall value of that experience and that is really, what has propelled us..."

  • Intel Clarkdale vs AMD Phenom II with 785G Mainstream Showdown - When it comes to gaming, the difference between the Core i5 661 and the 785G's HD4200 is not that big, especially when you increase the clock frequency of the HD4200, which can be easily done even without increasing the voltage. Now, please note that Intel did 'cheat' a bit when sending out the Clarkdale samples: the Core i5 661 has the IGP clocked at 900MHz, whereas the other products have it clocked at 733MHz. With no option to decrease the IGP frequency through Intel's DH55TC bios, the comparison is maybe a bit unfair. We had preferred to test a normal Clarkdale product to see the real difference ... but we'll have time for that later this year for sure.

  • Office 2010 Build 14.0.4730.1007 Leaked and Available for Download - An internal build of the upcoming Microsoft Office 2010 has leaked to the web according to Wzor. The build comes in at a staggering 3.51GB which is significantly larger than the public beta build which was at 749mb; the leaked build is tagged with the build number 14.0.4730.1007. There is no information as to why the build is so much larger but one speculation is that it may include debugging software. Another possibility is that the code may not be packed for media release which would make the build much larger than the compressed format released to the general public.

The display is full color – reportedly it works better in a brightly lit environment than the competition. Reportedly the Mirasol uses less power – and is supposed to be faster than current technologies.

(hx) 04:53 PM CET - Jan,10 2010 - Post a comment
  • Intel Core i5-660/661 Processors Tested - Many users thought that the Core i5-600 would be like Core 2 Duo, just better -- a very fast processor for single and dual-threaded tasks. Unfortunately, we have to disappoint them: multi-threading is meat and drink for these CPUs, they need it as much as higher-end processors do.
  • NVIDIA CEO: GF100 in volume production - During NVIDIA's CES Press Conference this morning, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang confirmed that their next-generation GF100 Fermi GPU is in volume production now, although he wouldn't provide an exact release date. Huang also confirmed that GF100 would support NVIDIA's upcoming 3D Vision Surround, which provides 3D Vision support across multiple displays in a similar fashion to ATI's Eyefinity tech. FYI, the GF100 is about 10.5 inches long, takes up two PCI slots, has a cooling system with one fan, and requires extra power via two PCIe power connectors (one 6-pin and an 8-pin). Nvidia's card has support for SLI (3-way SLI), DirectX 11, OpenCL, PhysX, CUDA, and should boast a 384-bit memory interface as well as 512 CUDA cores.
  • NVIDIA GF100 Fermi Video Card Triple SLI Rocket Sled Demo - The demo is being narrated by NVIDIA and all looks great until the very end. GF100 is due out in March 2010, so the driver team is still tweaking the software on these graphics cards.

Why you should use OpenGL and not DirectX - tech
(hx) 02:31 AM CET - Jan,09 2010 - Post a comment / read (6)
Independent game company Wolfire write why you should use OpenGL and not DirectX. The article goes over a brief history and the standard and Microsoft's tactics with DirectX, and what this really means for developers.
It's common knowledge that OpenGL has faster draw calls than DirectX (see NVIDIA presentations like this one if you don't want to take my word for it), and it has first access to new GPU features via vendor extensions. OpenGL gives you direct access to all new graphics features on all platforms, while DirectX only provides occasional snapshots of them on their newest versions of Windows. The tesselation technology that Microsoft is heavily promoting for DirectX 11 has been an OpenGL extension for three years. It has even been possible for years before that, using fast instancing and vertex-texture-fetch. I don't know what new technologies will be exposed in the next couple years, I know they will be available first in OpenGL.

Microsoft has worked hard on DirectX 10 and 11, and they're now about as fast as OpenGL, and support almost as many features. However, there's one big problem: they don't work on Windows XP! Half of PC gamers still use XP, so using DirectX 10 or 11 is not really a viable option. If you really care about having the best possible graphics, and delivering them to as many gamers as possible, there's no choice but OpenGL.

Half-Life 2 Playing on Project Natal (leaked video) - tech

Brief clip of Project Natal for Half-Life 2. Situated in Isaac Kleiner's Lab it shows some movement and turning with hand gestures and also some interaction with the teleporters. This video looks to be in the alpha stage. Still, while the verdict may be out on how well Natal will handle first person shooters, it's pretty darn cool to see a player control a complex game without a controller between them and the screen.

  • NVIDIA's Fermi delayed to March 2010 - DigiTimes reports that NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce 300 series cards based on their GF100 "Fermi" architecture, won't be released until March 2010. While DigiTimes says this is a delay, technically NVIDIA has always said that Fermi will ship sometime in Q1, so a March release would still fit within that timeframe. Still, a March launch would put NVIDIA 6 months behind ATI, and keep in mind that they're already facing shortages of GeForce GTX 200 cards. If NVIDIA can't bring GF100 to market in decent quantities soon and the shortages continue, they could lose a significant chunk of market share to ATI.

DiRT 2 Demo DX11 Performance and IQ preview - tech
(hx) 01:11 AM CET - Dec,08 2009 - Post a comment / read (1)
The chaps over at HardOCP have published their DiRT 2 Demo DX11 Performance and IQ preview, so if you want to know what DX 11 brings to the table and whether or not you are going to take a performance hit, this article should answer those questions and more. Here's a taster:
In this demo, the ATI Radeon HD 5870 and Radeon HD 5850 definitely had the performance advantage over their competitors. Using the same graphics options in the DX9 renderer, AMD’s ATI Radeon HD 5870 outperformed the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 by 23% at 2560x1600 with 8X MSAA and the highest possible in-game settings. Continuing the trend, the ATI Radeon HD 5850 outperformed the GeForce GTX 275 by about 21% at 2560x1600 in DX9 with 4X MSAA and maximum in-game graphics options.

On the NVIDIA side of the fence, the GeForce GTX 285 outran the GTX 275 by about 19% at 2560x1600 with 8X MSAA. Competition within the AMD’s products was less lop-sided. At 2560x1600 with 8X MSAA the Radeon HD 5870 was a hair under 5% faster than the Radeon HD 5850, and that difference was consistent at a variety of settings.

Now, the image quality enhancements in the DX11 renderer in the DiRT 2 demo did bring with them some degradation in performance. From what we’ve witnessed, the degradation was not so severe as to make the game unplayable using comparable settings, but there is a penalty nonetheless. It is interesting to note that, when running in DX11 with the accompanying performance hit, the Radeon HD 5870 still performed better than the GeForce GTX 285 running in DX9 mode. In fact, it was a touch over 13% faster.

Of course, this is not to say that performance on the NVIDIA based video cards was bad. On the contrary, it was quite good. We are looking at 8X MSAA at 2560x1600 being playable on the GTX 285, and 4X MSAA on the GTX 275. That is certainly an acceptable level of AA given the high resolution at which we tested. The only problem with the GeForce GTX 200 series of video cards in this game is that they do not support DX11. Thus, they do not benefit from the image quality enhancements available in the DX11 renderer

Star Trek Online Benchmarks - tech
(hx) 10:49 PM CET - Dec,07 2009 - Post a comment / read (1)
PC Games Hardware goes hands-on with Star Trek Online, including a little tech-check and some framerate data. Here's a bit:
The PC of Namco Bandai which we played on was equipped with a Core 2 quad Q8300, four GiByte RAM and a Geforce GTX 260. Taking a look at the Windows Task Manager after a longer gaming session confirmed what the developers told us already: Two cores were fully utilized while the remaining two cores weren't. Since only one test PC was available and we had limited time only, we stuck to benchmarks with highest and lowest graphics settings as well as FSAA and AF. The figure respectively our ship weren't moved to make sure the scene is reproducible.

As you can see on the benchmarks Star Trek Online was running smoothly on the test PC. With low details the performance of weaker systems can apparently be increased. Additional benchmarks revealed that the Geforce GTX 260 running high details with 4x or even 8x FSAA was just as fast as without Anti Aliasing.

Gaming in 2010 and Beyond - Where do we go... - tech
(hx) 07:14 PM CET - Dec,06 2009 - Post a comment / read (4)
The chaps over at Tweaktown have pusblished an interesting article entitled 'Gaming in 2010 and Beyond - Where do we go from here?' Here's a taster:
So why was 2009 such a disappointing year for gaming? Well, one of the biggest reasons was the change of the guard with respects to Direct X. It looks like many developers held their breath while waiting on Microsoft, NVIDIA and AMD to drop the DX11 shoe. Out of those that did release games, most were stuck back on DX9 (a decision made to get the most money out of their titles). The only game of note that was DX10 (10.1) was from a company formerly known only for their benchmarking software. FutureMark released an online game called Shattered Horizon that not only uses DX10.1, but also had more than its share of firsts. In fact, the number of DX10 and 10.1 titles is still very short three years after the launch of Vista.

Sadly it seems that our investments into DX10 hardware have gone to waste. Game developers have either ignored it or only implemented halfhearted support for the feature set available there. This is a direct reflection on the poor market acceptance of Vista. After all, why spend the money on DX10 development if the majority of your potential purchasers are not using it?

But if DX10 has been overlooked by the developers, what then of DX11? Will we see a move towards this new standard? We know that Windows 7 has had a significantly better adoption rate and received far better reviews from the press (the same ones that slammed Vista), but as of today we are still only hearing about a handful of games that will be coming for DX11. Of these only Battlefield Bad Company 2 is a title really worth watching.

So how does TWIMTBP affect DX11 adoption? Well, the most important factor is the current lack of any DX11 hardware from NVIDIA. Because of this, NV is not going to dump a ton of money to develop games for their competitor. But while there are no DX11 based GPUs from NV, they are still dumping cash and resources into the development of games that use other features of NV GPUs like PhysX and 3D Vision. Once the DX11 parts are ready and in the channel then they should shift quite quickly to pushing DX11 support for games. In the end this is going to be good for gamers (as long as they do not lock out AMD GPUs), as it will help offset the cost of development and could mean less expensive (or at least the same price) games for us to abuse.

Saboteur ATI Freezing Issue Workaround - tech
(hx) 04:00 PM CET - Dec,05 2009 - Post a comment / read (7)
Saboteur has a nasty freezing issue (thanks VE3D) that affects most ATI users when opening menus and the quest journal, and transitioning between areas. Some ATI gamers are able to play using Windows XP, but even then there are often problems. Pandemic is investigating the problems in conjunction with ATI. Here's a intermittently-working workaround:
We are currently digging into the issue at hand & are working as fast as possible to find a solution. In some of our tests we have found one workaround that seems to allow users to run the game. Some have posted adjusting the affinity process via “Task Manager” but our fix truly puts the system in a 1 core mode and will allow you to run the game. Overall this is not a final fix, nor a perfectly stable fix, but it will allow you to run the game. This work around is entirely base upon CPU processing power & will possibly only work for certain systems.

Steps to turn off cores: (For Windows 7)
1.) Open MSCONFIG (You can open it by entering MSCONFIG in the search bar)
2.) Select the “Boot” tab
3.) Click on “Advanced Options”
4.) Check “Number of Processors”
5.) Select “1” from dropdown menu
6.) Click “Apply”
7.) Restart machine

Steps to turn off cores: (For Windows Vista)
1.) Open MSCONFIG – Start> Run > Type MSCONFIG
2.) Select the “BOOT.INI” tab
3.) Click on “Advanced Options…”
4.) Select the check box for /NUMPROC= set it to 1 & click “OK”
5.) Click “Apply”
6.) Restart machine

  • Intel Shows 48-core x86 Processor as Single-chip Cloud Computer - Intel unveiled a completely new processor design the company is dubbing the 'Single-chip Cloud Computer' (but was previously codenamed Bangalore). Justin Rattner, the company's CTO, discussed the new product at a press event in Santa Clara and revealed some interesting information about the goals and design of the new CPU. The 48 cores are arranged in 24 "titles" - what you can think of as 24 separate dual-core processors. These tiles are then connected via a 2D mesh network that can support up to 256 GB/s of bandwidth! There are four integrated DDR3 memory controllers (though no mention of how many channels each controller is) that can house as much as 64GB of total memory.

Borderlands Gameplay Performance and IQ - tech
(hx) 01:08 AM CET - Dec,01 2009 - Post a comment / read (6)
The chaps over at HardOCP have played Borderlands on nine of the best video cards on the market. How well does the PC version of this co-op shooter perform on today’s hardware? Here's a taster:
At 2560x1600, the GeForce GTX 295 predictably dominated the entire pack, giving us stellar performance and a great gameplay experience. Of course, the Radeon HD 4870 X2, HD 5870, GeForce GTX 285, Radeon HD 5850, and GeForce GTX 275 gave us the same experience. They just did so at slightly a lower level of performance. In the mainstream segment, it is impossible to recommend any of the sampled video cards for use at 2560x1600. Performance was just not good enough, and the lengths we had to go to make it playable rendered the image quality subpar. Unfortunately, an apparent bug kept us from enabling 2X AA at 2560x1600 on the GeForce GTX 295, even though that video card should have been capable of it.

At 1920x1200, the GeForce GTX 285, Radeon HD 5850, and GeForce GTX 275 took great performance gains over 2560x1600. Even the GeForce GTS 250 was able to play Borderlands with maximum in-game settings at 1920x1200. Unfortunately, the Radeon HD 5770 and HD 5750 were not as lucky. We were forced to lower image quality to make up some performance, but it was not as severe as it was at 2560x1600. Still, the price and performance advantage of the GeForce GTS 250 make it an impressive contender at 1920x1200.

Going down to 1680x1050, we had no problem playing with maximum in-game settings on any of the three mainstream video cards we tested at that resolution. The least expensive video card of the three, the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250, gave us the best performance for this game.

We saw only very small differences in CPU utilization between NVIDIA and AMD video cards. Overall, the AMD Radeon HD 5870 was more effective at balancing the CPU load across the cores of our quad-core Core i7 920 processor, but it didn’t translate into a gameplay advantage. There were larger differences in memory usage, but it was inconsistent. Sitting at the desktop, the system had more free memory with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 installed than with AMD’s ATI Radeon HD 5870 installed. But once under load, the GeForce GTX 285 consumed more memory than the Radeon HD 5870. In the end, the differences were so minor as to be inconsequential, but it is interesting to see the differences.

The website is largely known as the second biggest public torrent tracker in the world, second to The Pirate Bay, which recently disabled their tracker, but remains operational using DHT and PEX. Mininova has been under a lot of pressure from court rulings to implement copyright filters or take the website offline. Last August, the courts ruled in favor against Mininova and up until now, the website has taken its time to implement filters into its uploading to prevent further prosecution.
  • China Warns About Return of Destructive Panda Virus - A computer worm that China warned Internet users against is an updated version of the Panda Burning Incense virus, which infected millions of PCs in the country three years ago, according to McAfee. A rootkit burrows into a system to try to hide the existence of malware. The first Panda worm gained fame in China for switching the icons of infected files with an image of a panda holding three incense sticks. • AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition with Stepping C3 Review - As a conclusion the AMD flagship proved to be a very competent package. The next step will be to see how well it copes against Intel's latest LGA1156 platform, but it sure made short work of the older S775-based quad core Q9450. With the C3 revision came a lower power consumption, but 125 watts is still on the high side. Other improvements included better overclocking capabilities and indeed from all I've seen the 965BE seems to hit 4 GHz with ease when paired with a decent air cooler.
  • Seven Cheap Full HD 22-inch Monitors Tested -  Acer X223HQ became the best monitor in this group despite the fact that its color interpretation is one of the worst in this review. ASUS VH222D is one of the Best Buy models because of good and balances performances paired with one of the lower price tags. LG W2243S-PF looks like a clear winner despite the fact that every video signal that is different from 16:9 ratio will display in 4:3 ratio. Two Samsung models look like victims of numerical system and mathematical calculations, but 2233SN is monitor with best viewing angles while 2243SN with its swivel feature can be interesting choice too. ViewSonic VA2213w is closest to average marks in this test, but with significant backlight breaching it cannot do much more than that.

First of which, there is now a native .PDF reader, helping people to read documents of that format without having to convert them. The second improvement is, as mentioned, a massive 85 percent boost in battery life - this means that now the Kindle can remain powered on for a solid 7 days with wireless enabled, up from the previous 4, according to Amazon. If wireless is switched off, the Kindle's battery life remains at the previous level of "up to two weeks", apparently.

Google releases Chrome OS information - tech
(hx) 02:14 AM CET - Nov,20 2009 - Post a comment / read (3)
Today, Google has finally explained more about the OS, clearing things up. As posted on the official Google blog, Chrome OS is 'all about the web.' Another benefit to Chrome OS is the speed. Google has said that the current version boots in 7 seconds, which is pretty nippy compared to most operating systems out there!
First, it's all about the web. All apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser and there are no conventional desktop applications. This means users do not have to deal with installing, managing and updating programs.

Second, because all apps live within the browser, there are significant benefits to security. Unlike traditional operating systems, Chrome OS doesn't trust the applications you run. Each app is contained within a security sandbox making it harder for malware and viruses to infect your computer. Furthermore, Chrome OS barely trusts itself. Every time you restart your computer the operating system verifies the integrity of its code. If your system has been compromised, it is designed to fix itself with a reboot. While no computer can be made completely secure, we're going to make life much harder (and less profitable) for the bad guys. If you dig security, read the Chrome OS Security Overview or watch the video.

Most of all, we are obsessed with speed. We are taking out every unnecessary process, optimizing many operations and running everything possible in parallel. This means you can go from turning on the computer to surfing the web in a few seconds. Our obsession with speed goes all the way down to the metal. We are specifying reference hardware components to create the fastest experience for Google Chrome OS.

There is still a lot of work to do, and we're excited to work with the open source community. We have benefited hugely from projects like GNU, the Linux Kernel, Moblin, Ubuntu, WebKit and many more. We will be contributing our code upstream and engaging closely with these and other open source efforts. Google Chrome OS will be ready for consumers this time next year. Sign up here for updates or if you like building your operating system from source, get involved at chromium.org.

Unlike Adobe, which recommends using Flash 10.1 only with Radeon HD 3000- or 4000-series cards and 9.11 Catalysts, AMD says folks with Radeon HD 5800- and 5700-series GPUs can go nuts, too. Modern Warfare 2 - 23 Graphics Cards Tested - tech
(hx) 02:31 PM CET - Nov,17 2009 - Post a comment
The chaps over at Guru3D have published a Modern Warfare 2 VGA Graphics Performance Review, featuring image quality comparisons and a VGA chart ranging from monitor resolution 1280x1024 up-to 2560x1600. Here's a bit:
As the results have shown, for very little money you can play this game with any reasonably modern graphics card. An outdated graphics engine surely ensures that a large user base can play the game, all I can say to infinity Ward is 'job well done' The game does still look good, but yes .. we'll also acknowledge that it could have been better.

Gameplay wise I adore this series and I can't wait for MF3 for that matter. The single player campaign is playable in 5 to 10 hours fairly easy, which certainly is a little short. But then you can choose other modes (Spec Ops) or go hunt each other down in the now totally steam bound multiplayer. The one downside of the game (on the multiplayer side) is that it is tied to Steam -- which brings along too many limitations.

First Windows 7 Zero-Day Exploit Confirmed - tech

Microsoft confirmed the existence of an unpatched zero-day vulnerability that affects Windows 7 & Server 2008 R2, though they are downplaying the risk.
Attacks could be aimed at any browser, not just Internet Explorer (IE), Microsoft warned. After tricking users into visiting a malicious site or a previously-compromised domain, hackers could feed them specially-crafted URIs (uniform resource identifier), and then crash their PCs with malformed SMB packets.

Microsoft said it may patch the problem, but didn't spell out a timetable or commit to an out-of-cycle update before the next regularly-scheduled Patch Tuesday of Dec. 8. Instead, the company suggested users block TCP ports 139 and 445 at the firewall. Doing so, however, would disable browsers as well as a host of critical services, including network file-sharing and IT group policies.
