66% Of All Windows Users Still Use Windows XP? - tech
(hx) 01:15 AM CEST - Oct,06 2010 - Post a comment / read (32)
According to this article, almost 66% of all Windows users are still on Windows XP!
It is no secret that Windows users have learned that change is something Windows computers don’t like. Often, it is much easier to leave the Windows version that came with a PC as it was and avoid the pain of upgrading. Vista may have been an exception as the operating system itself was worth the extra pain (or not), while Windows XP was a solid software that works well for the majority of computer users worldwide even today.

New market share data recently released by Net Applications puts XP’s market share at 60.03%, down from 60.89% in the month before. Windows Vista fell from 14.00% to 13.35%, while Windows 7 gained 1.25 points to 17.10%. It is interesting to see that Vista and XP lost a combined 1.51 points in September: The difference between the gain of 7 and the loss of Vista/XP represents 100% of the Windows market share loss, which was down 0.25 points to 91.08% in September.

Since the launch of Windows 7 in October 2009, the operating system was able to post a net gain of market share in only three months, according to Net Applications, and was hit with a net market share loss of 1.44 points over the past 11 months. If we believe the data published by Net Applications, then Windows 7 has not been able to stop the market share bleeding of Windows, even if it has slowed a bit: In the past 9 months, Windows lost only 0.92 points, while Windows lost 1.14 points in the 9 nine months directly preceding the launch of Windows 7.

  • HP Slate gets demoed on video - A YouTube user has posted a lengthy video demo of a HP Slate device running Windows 7. Although the device boots in 30 seconds, compared to the iPad's 15 second boot time, it's clear from the start that Windows 7 isn't suitable for a slate style device. Windows 7 appears to be difficult to navigate using just your finger. The onscreen keyboard also takes approximately 60% of the screen space and does not push any content above it to make it user friendly.

The most recent stat, which will speak to some of the naysayers of full-electrics, is that it gets an EPA-certified 245 miles on a single charge. They've also swapped out from a two-speed transmission to a single-speed transmission. This is apparently more efficient. In the video below, Jay also learns about how air-conditioning affects fuel economy, how the liquid cooling system works, and so on. It's actually quite educational.

Nvidia Fermi successor called Kepler, coming 2011 - tech
(hx) 07:44 PM CEST - Sep,22 2010 - Post a comment / read (9)
Exciting stuff at the end of Jen-Hsun Huang's GTC keynote as Nvidia's CEO has presented a roadmap depicting the next two GPU architectures currently in the works at the Santa Clara company. Fermi's successors are known as Kepler and Maxwell and are scheduled to launch in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Kepler will be based on a 28-nanometer fabrication process, and Nvidia intends for it to be nearly three times more efficient, in DP FLOPS per watt, than today's Fermi architecture. Huang noted that such an improvement goes "far beyond" what process technology advances alone can achieve. Changes in the chip architecture, design, and software will contribute to that advance, as well. The Maxwell architecture will come next, in 2013, and will be produced on a 22-nm fabrication process. Maxwell promises nearly an 8X increase in DP FLOPS per watt beyond today's Fermi chips. Huang noted that, in parallel computing, power is the primary constraint, which is why he chose that metric to describe future architectures.

  • Viewsonic's G Tablet runs Android 2.2 froyo, costs $529 - What I specifically like about the G Tablet is its front facing camera and USB port, and this would have been great 6 months ago, but as Apple readies its next-generation iPad it's really going to be a too little too late scenario Viewsonic. Especially at their $529 asking price. Sure, it's loaded with 1GB RAM, 16GB flash with microSD expansion for 16 more, it plays 1080p HD for 10 hours, but we've heard that song and dance before and Viewsonic is now officially deep in the iPad clone catchup game.

Nvidia lowers price on GeForce GTX 460 768MB - tech
(hx) 12:49 AM CEST - Sep,11 2010 - Post a comment / read (3)
Nvidia Corp. has confirmed the evident price drop on the GeForce GTX 460 768MB graphics card. The board, which manufacturer suggested retail price at launch several weeks ago was $199 can now be obtained for $179 or even $169 in several online stores in the U.S. Lowering the price of the GTX 460 768MB will surely help to cement its position as the best mid-range graphics value around.

I've noticed Newegg has a version from Gigabyte that sells for just $170 and can be purchased with StarCraft II for only $210.

The developer/prototype devices are obviously not the ones that the platform will hit on its final release, but we were impressed with how quick and stable the whole thing ran even at this stage. A few areas are worrying, with the lack of Twitter, Flash, Silverlight and HTML5 video at launch, it's not clear what Microsoft's game plan is here. As a heavy user of Youtube & Twitter on Android, it seems hard to imagine life without it. There's potential that Microsoft might be intending on using the Zune hub as a way to manage video, but it's not clear yet."

Mafia II GPU & CPU Performance In-depth - tech
(hx) 05:12 PM CEST - Aug,31 2010 - Post a comment / read (5)
The chaps over at TechSpot take a look at Mafia II GPU & CPU Performance. Here's a taster:
The high-end GeForce GTX 480 is more than capable of playing this game in all of its glory at resolutions as high as 2560x1600 with PhysX enabled, so it is not the $500+ graphics cards we are concerned with. Even the more affordable GeForce GTX 460 can handle PhysX at resolutions such as 1680x1050 or lower when coupled with a fast enough processor.

Sadly for those with AMD graphics cards playing Mafia II with PhysX enabled is not going to run very well, unless you have a Nvidia graphics card handling the PhysX workload. Even with our Core i7 920 processor clocked at 3.70GHz, the Radeon HD 5970 and 5870 cards were limited to 22fps at 1680x1050. With a dedicated Nvidia PhysX card even the old Radeon HD 4890 can provide playable performance at 1680x1050, however factoring in the cost of the additional graphics card this path makes little sense. The best option for AMD users is to disable PhysX and forget it even exists. We suspect most will get over the missing rubble. While we would not normally recommend disabling anti-aliasing in games that support it, we must admit this feature made little difference in Mafia II. Owners of speedy GPUs won't feel the need to turn it off, but to give you tangible examples, the Radeon HD 4850 was an incredible 78% faster with anti-aliasing disabled while the GeForce 9800 GT was also 52% faster.

AMD Dropping the ATI Brand Name - tech
(hx) 09:59 PM CEST - Aug,30 2010 - Post a comment / read (15)
The Tech Report has confirmation that rumors that AMD was planning on dropping the ATI brand from their products is indeed true. As a result you can expect that the next generation of Radeon cards will be AMD branded, without any mention of ATI at all.
The long and short of it is that, according to AMD's own survey results, consumers savvy enough to know something about discrete graphics cards tend to know the Radeon name, they tend to like AMD, and they don't mind seeing the AMD name on graphics cards once they realize AMD merged with ATI. The folks at AMD read those results as "permission" to jettison the ATI brand name.

The plan, then, is to replace "ATI Radeon" and "ATI FirePro" with "Radeon" and "FirePro", along with a sprinkling of AMD corporate identity. The badges you see above will be used for systems with discrete Radeon and FirePro graphics cards. The lower row omits the AMD logo, so PC makers shipping Intel-based systems will be able to avoid the oil-and-water combo of Intel and AMD branding, if they wish.

If you just bought an "ATI Radeon" and are proud of that fact, fear not. Existing products, including the Radeon HD 5000 series, will not be renamed. Instead, AMD says the first products to carry the "AMD Radeon" label will be introduced later this year.

Toshiba to launch first glasses-free 3D TV - tech
(hx) 06:48 PM CEST - Aug,24 2010 - Post a comment / read (3)
According to Breitbart, Toshiba is jumping ahead with its plans to bring goggle-free 3D to your living room and expects to have the first sets available for purchase later this year following disappointing initial sales of 3D televisions which require special glasses to view:
The company has developed a new system that emits a number of rays of light with various angles from the screen so that viewers can see stereoscopic images without glasses, the daily said.

"People can enjoy images in three dimensions from various positions and suffer less stress," it said. Japan's major electronics makers launched 3D television this year, but sales have not been as strong as expected while many customers have complained of being irritated by the glasses.

However, a Toshiba spokeswoman said: "We are not in a position to make any announcement."

TechNews - Intel to Buy McAfee for $7.68 Billion - tech

  • Intel Core i5-760 and ECS P55H-AK Tested - In the form of the Core i5-760 Intel have a CPU which gives them a little more performance in the highly competitive $200/£150 market. It builds on the solid foundations of the i5-750 which has served them well for nearly a year now and ensures that their platform has a model which offers similar performance to the AMD 1055T. There are occasions where the AMD chip is faster such as encoding video with Adobe's CS5 software however in gaming and Photoshop use the Intel chip gave us the best performance. For £150 we also get some fantastic overclocking potential, something which adds a lot of value to the CPU. With very little effort we were able to hit 4.4GHz which is 1.6GHz above the advertised speed of the processor.
  • CPU Performance Comparison Guide (Updated) - This CPU performance comparison guide currently covers 209 different CPU models!
  • Intel to Buy McAfee for $7.68 Billion - Intel is busting out the petty cash jar to buy McAffee for $7.68B. Wow!
  • Unboxing the dual-touchscreen Toshiba Libretto W100 tablet (video) - Taking on a form factor very similar to the Microsoft Courier, the Libretto almost looks like a netbook where the physical keyboard has been replaced by another touchscreen display. In this way, you could use as a laptop with a virtual keyboard, or you could rotate it as a book. At least, that's what the Libretto W100 looks like to me. The specs include the pair of 7-inch capacitive touchscreens (1024 x 600 pixels each), an Intel Pentium U5400 1.2Ghz processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, 62GB solid state drive, WiFi, WiMAX, Bluetooth, webcam, USB port, and microSD slot.
  • India's $35 tablet demonstrated on video - Here is some more dope on the 'to be good to be true' $35 Tablet PC from India:
  • Axon Haptic tablet comes with no OS, $750 pre-orders now on - Axon Haptic tablet, get this, ships without an OS pre-installed. It's totally up to you what operating system you want to load onto the beast, assuming that it is compatible with the hardware found inside. According to the devs, the internals should be good for 'almost any OS,' including Linux, Windows, and even OS X. Interesting enough, no mention of the little green guy anywhere. It handles this via its EFI bootloader, which basically 'tricks' Mac OS into thinking that it's running on some Apple hardware.
  • Mozilla to release Firefox beta 4 on Monday - Mozilla is planning on releasing Firefox beta 4 tomorrow with two major new features: hardware-accelerated graphics for Windows users and tab sets, or better known as tab candy. The iPhone 4 can no longer be purchased from Apple without an AT&T contract in the U.S. Previously, the iPhone was available from Apple for $599/$699 (16GB and 32GB, respectively) for those not wishing to sign new two-year contracts with AT&T. The Apple Store now declares, "iPhone requires a two-year AT&T wireless service contract." The subsidized prices of the 16GB and 32GB iPhone 4 have not changed. AT&T's web site confirms that the iPhone 4 requires a new two-year contract if purchased online. However, AT&T still offers no contract pricing for the iPhone 4 at company-owned retail stores.

Vanishing on 7th Street stars Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo, but doesn't have a US distributor or release date.

Auto 3D: The Elimination of 3D Glasses - tech
(hx) 03:06 AM CEST - Aug,18 2010 - Post a comment / read (1)
GamePro reports that those who recently dropped thousands of dollars on a shiny new 3D display and the accompanying sets of glasses may have jumped on the 3D bandwagon a bit prematurely, as autostereoscopic displays such as the one showcased in the Nintendo 3DS handheld are likely the future of the format, at least for home theaters:
Sharp has been working with Nintendo on an autostereoscopic 3D solution that uses parallax barrier technology. Bower says it costs less than $20 to put Master Image technology in a mobile phone.

"Autostereoscopic 3D is what everybody wants," says Reuben Langdon, president of Just Cause Productions, which has developed stereo 3D video games like Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2 for the PC with Capcom. "Everybody keeps telling me-because they know I'm in the 3D business-'Oh, you're in 3D. That's great, but you have to wear those silly glasses.' That's the first thing everybody says. I always tell them, 'You won't have to for long. Just bear with it for a couple of years and we'll be glasses-free soon.'"

Langdon says having the Nintendo 3DS come out with auto-stereoscopic technology so quickly is proof that it's the future of 3D.

GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLI vs. Radeon HD 5870 CFX - tech
(hx) 03:35 PM CEST - Aug,11 2010 - Post a comment / read (11)
The chaps over HardOCP have the GTX 460 SLI going head to head with a Radeon HD 5870 CrossFireX and the results are very impressive. Here's a taster:
GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLI real world gaming performance is superior to even AMD's fastest high-end single GPU video cards in a CrossFireX configuration. And do keep in mind this is real gaming, not benchmarks. There is no getting around or denying the awesome performance of SLI configured GTX 460 1GB video cards. The excitement is even more pronounced when you can find very highly overclocked GTX 460 cards like the Galaxy GTX 460 1GB Super OC for $229 after $10 MIR. These cards simply represent a great value for the gamer and hardware enthusiast.

We've found previously that GeForce GTX 480 SLI provides tremendous performance well out pacing Radeon HD 5870 CFX in pretty much every newer game released (and we have a follow-up on that coming soon). You can see here where specifically in AvP, that GTX 480 SLI destroys 5870 2GB CFX. So maybe we should not be surprised by what we are seeing here. It seems, that GTX 480 SLI is not the real competition for 5870 CFX after all, it seems that these much less expensive GTX 460 1GB video cards are the 5870 GPU's real competition. AMD should be worried about this. CrossFireX scaling needs some work....a lot of work. SLI is blowing CrossFireX out of the water with these newer GPUs.

TechNews - GTX 460 SLI vs. AMD GPUs - tech
(hx) 02:10 AM CEST - Aug,06 2010 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • GeForce GTX 460 SLI Performance vs. AMD GPUs - For gamers looking to get into multi-monitor gaming, the Radeon HD 5850 may be a better overall value than the GeForce GTX 460 SLI. Each video card costs only about $30 more than the Galaxy Super OC GeForce GTX 460 cards we used for this evaluation, but the 5850 will support Eyefinity multi-display gaming right out of the box, without having to buy a second video card.
  • MSI GeForce GTX 460 768MB Cyclone in SLI - Overall the GTX 460 in SLI is just amazing; the performance is huge but NVIDIA have done to the GTX 480 what they did to the GTX 465 and GTX 470 with this model. They may have shot themselves in the foot as the GTX 460 in SLI shouldn't be cheaper than a single GTX 480 while at the same time faster. We're talking around 20% cheaper.
  • GF104 replacement for GTX 470 up NVIDIA's sleeve? - Fudzilla claims that NVIDIA has a stock of fully-functional GF104 GPUs ready to replace the GTX 470, which is based on the GF100 chip. The recently released GTX 460 has one of its eight shading multiprocessors disabled, meaning it has 336 CUDA cores out of a possible 384. The GTX 470, on the other hand, is a scaled down version of the GTX 480, with one of its SMs similarly disabled. By replacing that with the re-engineered GF104, the GTX 475 (or whatever they end up calling it) will bring more performance while cutting down on the heat, noise, and power consumption characteristic of the first-generation Fermi parts.

  • Panasonic announces first 3D camcorder - Panasonic has unveiled the world's first consumer 3D video camcorder, the HDC-SDT750. Recording works by using a 3D mode which is enabled by simply snapping on a 3D conversion lens designed to fit exactly to the camcorder. It records a split image, so you won't be getting full 1080p 3D, but more like 960 x 1080. That's pretty good for the first of its kind. Panasonic figured that since there are no 3D players on the market yet, the camera itself will have to function as the player. The only way to watch them is to output to a 3D capable TV via the camcorder. You can alternatively turn off 3D and just record straight to HDMI, but that's not what you dropped $1400 big ones down for now is it. Expect it this October in the US.

ATI Beta Drivers Add StarCraft II Anti-Aliasing - tech

During the week prior to the Starcraft II launch, performance results started surfacing showing a game easily playable, even with entry-level graphics cards. However, the results also showed ATI cards were not capable of supporting anti-aliasing in the game. This issue just got an answer though as ATI has released the 10.7a beta drivers. These new beta drivers add support for anti-aliasing in Starcraft II through the ATI Catalyst Control Center, and are supported by all Windows based operating systems from XP to 7. Additionally, the new drivers increase the performance of Quad CrossFireX configurations when using Eyefintiy.

StarCraft II Overheating Bug - tech
(hx) 09:01 PM CEST - Jul,30 2010 - Post a comment / read (7)
Has StarCraft II melted your machine yet? Blizzard has officially admitted that it’s a known issue and that there is a fix to it all. Here's the workaround for the beta, which will presumably work on the full game by using the proper directory:
StarCraft II’s menu screens aren’t framerate-limited, which means that when there’s nothing else happening, your graphics hardware renders the shit out of those screens, causing some bad overheating problems. Not to worry though the fix-up is easy, requiring players to add only a few of the following lines to your “Documents\StarCraft II Beta\variables.txt” “Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt” file (nice catch, commenter LegolElf):

frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60

ATI Catalyst 10.7 is Now Available - tech

AMD/ATI has just released ATI Catalyst 10.7 drivers for Windows 7, Vista, XP and Linux. The most notable change on the software front is support for WebGL, which is the industry standard for implementing 3D graphics in a web browser. With ATI including the OpenGL ES 2.0 driver in the new 10.7 release, developers have an easier means to create 3D internet applications without the need for additional plug-ins. This will allow for the creation of easily rendered 3D content for open-source browsers, such as Google, Firefox, and Opera. Along with the OpenGL driver the new release also includes improvements for Eyefinity, CrossFireX and even support for Ubuntu 10.04.

StarCraft II GPU Performance Comparison - tech
(hx) 10:02 PM CEST - Jul,19 2010 - Post a comment / read (3)
HardwareCanucks take a look at ten modern GPUs from ATI's HD 5000-series and NVIDIA's GTX 400 series which range in price from $500 to a mere $135 USD in order to determine which cards offer the best performance. Here's a taster:
There was a major problem with our tests but it ended up being a good eye-opener as well. The main issue here is the fact that we are seeing performance comparisons on paper and in chart form so the differences from one product to the next sometimes look significant. Truthfully, unless you are playing on a massive 30” screen, it’s highly unlikely that you would actually “feel” the difference between $200 GTX 460 768MB and a $500 GTX 480 in this game. The fact that a lowly HD 5750 is able to provide a perfectly stable gameplay experience all the way up to 2560 x 1600 at Ultra High details proves Blizzard’s statement that StarCraft II will have no issue being played by a large cross-section of the market. If anything, this game shows that you don’t need to spend an absolute fortune on a graphics card upgrade to get the best possible experience. The mark of a good game for a broad range of users is a small fluctuation between the average and minimum framerates. StarCraft displayed exactly this.

When it came to overall performance, there is no doubt that NVIDIA’s cards are able to run away with the show at anything under 2560 x 1600 resolution. When the higher resolution is used, the competition heats up and ATI’s higher end cards are able to stage a comeback to put them almost within reach of the GTX 480 and GTX 470. Both these ATI products also show that higher efficiency can lead to some serious considerations on a performance per watt level as well. Lower down in the price ranges things are all firmly in NVIDIA’s hands with the GTX 460 cards but this category also leads to the biggest disappointments. The GTX 465 and HD 5830 are truly dogs when compared to the rest of the field; they are both either too power hungry or too expensive and never really compete from any viewpoint.

This actually leads us to our recommendation: the GTX 460 1GB. It offers the perfect balance of overall performance, power consumption and price. Even if Blizzard rolls out a number of patches which add increased image quality, this card still has the overhead necessary to continue delivering performance in spades long into the update life of StarCraft II. It also has the ability to use NVIDIA’s anti aliasing override in order to give the game that extra eye candy punch versus the competition. As we said in its original review: the GTX 460 1GB is literally the perfect card for today’s market and its performance in StarCraft II just shows this once again.

  • Intel's new Core i7 970 six-core CPU listed  online - As expected, Intel's second hexa-core processor is starting to emerge in online listings from retailers. The new Core i7 970 will reportedly be priced around $115 lower than the range-topping Core i7 980X in the U.S. and will feature slightly toned down specs such as 3.2GHz clock speeds as well as a locked multiplier. Otherwise both chips sport the same 12MB L3 cache, are compatible with socket LGA 1366 boards and -- of course -- have six cores and twelve threads. The new Gulftown chip can be found in its boxed version from U.K. retailer Digital-Fusion for £705.52 (or around $1,090). The same site has the 980X for £801.22 ($1,230), so if the price relationship is retained for the U.S. market then its non-Extreme variant should retail for around $885.
  • Intel Pentium 4 Vs. Atom: A Battle Of The Generations - Performance-wise, there are benchmarks in which the old Pentium 4 still does well. This applies to workloads that haven’t been multi-threaded or coded to take advantage of newer instruction set enhancements, such as SSE3. All others, though, run much faster on the dual-core Atom D510, mostly thanks to its second processing core. The performance difference is glaring.
  • Microsoft extends Windows XP downgrade rights until 2020 - In an unusual move from Microsoft, the software giant announced that it will allow downgrade rights from Windows 7 to Windows XP Professional right up until 2020. Microsoft originally stated that users could downgrade to Windows XP 18 months after the debut of Windows 7, or until Windows 7 SP1, which is just around the corner. However, the company changed its mind once again, offering customers the chance to downgrade from Windows 7 to Windows XP Professional until 2020, the entire lifecycle of Windows 7.
  • Motorola's Droid X Sells Out on Day One - While Apple has been busy playing damage control on the antenna issues with its iPhone 4, Motorola has been clearing some headway of its own with the launch of the Droid X, which sold out on it's first day on the market. Keep up the fine work Motorola! On the launch of the Motorola Droid X, rumors surfaced that a chip known as 'eFuse' would brick the phone after any attempt to run custom ROMs. Motorola has stated this will not happen, but it does go into 'Recovery Mode' when booted with unauthorized software. Reinstalling the Motorola software will restore it to normal. So the phone will not become unusable, but it is quite possibly unhackable.
  • iOS 4.1 beta released, but does it fix the antenna issue? - Apple released the iOS 4.1 beta to developers today and all hopes that a software update will fix the antenna and signal issues has been lost.
  • Apple Defends iPhone Antenna, Offers Free Cases - In general, says Apple, users aren't calling AppleCare to complain, users aren't returning it in large numbers, and the data suggests that it doesn't lose any more signal strength than a number of competing products from other manufacturers (such as BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Droid Eris, Samsung Omnia II). Despite the evidence that suggests the iPhone 4's performance is on par with other devices, Apple wants to make all of its customers happy. First, Apple recommends that all iPhone owners update to iOS 4.0.1 to update the formula used to calculate signal strength
  • Nokia Statement Backs Apple's iPhone Defense - Nokia offered a statement to help put the iPhone 4 antenna issues into perspective. The company noted that it has invested thousands of hours studying how people use phones and has used the information learned to engineer antenna placement. Nokia said, 'Nokia designs our phones to ensure acceptable performance in all real life cases, for example when the phone is held in either hand.' Nokia points out that antenna design is complex, and is one of its core competencies.

Their lofty ambition is to become the number one daily destination of top personalized news content from around the Web, build a genuine Newspaper of the Future, and thus "deliver the final blow to the newspaper industry". The app crawls thousands of the top blogs and news sources on the Web within said categories, ranks them, and clusters related articles together.

Best Gaming CPUs For The Money: July 2010 - tech
(hx) 10:09 PM CEST - Jul,15 2010 - Post a comment / read (14)
For those of you who don't have the time to research the benchmarks, THG has posted simple list of the best gaming CPUs offered for the money. Here's a taster:
Best Gaming CPU for ~$70:  The Athlon II X3 435 offers a trio of execution cores and a very respectable 2.9 GHz clock speed. As a bonus, that extra core will also make a notable difference in multi-tasking performance. This model has good overclocking headroom if you want to push it a little further, so you can take it beyond what that low $70 buy-in implies. The Athlon II X3 425's attractive price tag completely edges out the Athlon II dual-core models from our list of recommendations.

Best Gaming CPU for ~$85: The Athlon II X3 440 recently dropped in price to $75 in response to the Athlon II X3 445 model replacing it. While we like the lower price, we're going to lean toward the faster model this time around.

Best Gaming CPU for $115:
At $115, the Core i3-530 deserves a solid recommendation as a gaming processor. It consistently beat the Athlon II X3 445, and came surprisingly close to challenging the Phenom II X4 940 on a number of occasions. The only downside is that this dual-core, Hyper-Threaded processor doesn't handle multitasking as well as a true quad- or even triple-core processor, like the Athlon II X3. Nevertheless, its basic gaming ability can not be refuted.

Best Gaming CPU for $140:
The Phenom II X4 945 offers AMD's flagship CPU architecture combined with a high 3 GHz clock speed, all for the reasonable price of $140. There is no other CPU at this price point that performs as well when gaming or when multitasking.

Best Gaming CPU for $160:
A former flagship of AMD's Phenom II family, the Phenom II X4 955 BE has been relegated to second-place status by the newer Phenom II X4 965 BE model. Now at $160, it offers a very compelling price/performance ratio for a true quad-core unlocked processor with gobs of cache.

Best Gaming CPU for $180: While the Phenom II X4 955 and 965 both share an unlocked multiplier, the new revision 965 model's C3 stepping has been shown to be quite overclock-friendly compared to previous models. If you're looking for an AMD processor with maximum overclocking headroom, just make sure you're buying the new 125 W C3 stepping of the processor, not the older 140 W version.

Best Gaming CPU for $200: The new Core i5 brings top-of-the-line Nehalem-class performance at a $200 price point. It's so good that we awarded it our Recommended Buy honor after seeing it stand up to more expensive CPUs in games and other demanding apps. For those desiring the best possible performance, the Core i5-750 can be overclocked to great effect, and when pushed, will perform similarly to the $1,000 Core i7-975 Extreme Edition at the more expensive CPU's stock settings.

Best Gaming CPU for $295: Intel's Core i7 has proven itself to be the most powerful gaming CPU option available, based on the data we have gathered. The Core i7-930 is a great choice for systems coupled with multiple graphics cards in an SLI or CrossFire configuration. The motherboards and DDR3 RAM that the i7 architecture requires will bring the total platform cost higher than other systems, but the resulting performance should be worth the purchase price.

Best Gaming CPU for $999: This six-core monster has stolen the bragging rights for the world's fastest CPU from the Core i7-975 Extreme. Despite the fact that most games don't utilize more than three CPU cores, this is the fastest gaming CPU currently available for purchase as our tests have shown.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 Performance Preview - tech
(hx) 10:19 AM CEST - Jul,12 2010 - Post a comment / read (12)
Priced from $199-$229, the GeForce GTX 460 cards bring NVIDIA's Fermi architecture to gamers on a budget. Armed with 336 CUDA Cores, 7 PolyMorph Engines for tessellation, and high clocks, it doesn't disappoint when it comes to 3D performance, power consumption, or heat output. Firing Squad examines how the board performs in comparison to cards ranging from the GeForce 8800 GTS to the Radeon 5830 in 3D gaming, PhysX, and 3D Vision. Here's a taster:
As for how the GTX 460 stacks up to the previous generation of GeForce graphics cards, it’s actually very close with the GTX 275. Both versions of the 460 perform on par with or better than the 275 in just about every DX10 game test, even when PhysX and/or 3D Vision are enabled. Two GTX 460 768MBs in SLI evenly traded blows with dual GTX 275s, which are substantially more expensive. Obviously, there’s no contest where DX11 support is available.

Power consumption and cooling performance have been improved by leaps and bounds over the high end of the GTX 400 series. While the GTX 460s are the overall best performers out of the cards tested, they’re also among the most energy efficient. Because of this, temperatures never rose above 70 degrees C under load, nor did the cooling fans need to rev up enough to become audible over a few quiet case fans.

Whether you pay $199 or $229, the GTX 460 is an amazing performer for the price, not to mention the added value from terrific overclocking potential. Gains of 20-25% were easily had on core clocks and memory clocks, leading to directly proportional increases in performance. That’s more than the difference between the 768MB and 1GB versions, so you could certainly save $30 that way if you like.

NVIDIA is predicting that those mainstream gamers who have been waiting for something to replace their 9800 GTs will really latch on to the GTX 460. It’s certainly a fantastic way to break into the DX11 era for cheap, considering it beats the similarly priced Radeon HD 5830 while bringing exclusive features like PhysX, 3D Vision, and CUDA to the table. As much as some gamers seem to despise these GeForce-only perks, anyone in their right mind would have to take them into consideration when looking for a new graphics card.

Firefox 4.0 Beta 1 is now available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.  Mozilla originally said that it plans on releasing the final version of Firefox 4 sometime in October, but it appears that this date may slip by a few days or weeks. Meanwhile, Microsoft is preparing to launch Beta 1 of IE9 next month. As far as we can see now, it may be a tight race between IE9 and FF4 as far as JavaScript and D2D acceleration is concerned. The Webkit browsers Chrome and Safari as well as Opera 10.6 have the edge in JavaScript performance, but they do not support hardware acceleration yet. In Firefox 4.x related news, Howtogeek posted a quick tip about bypassing the incompatible add-on error on Firefox.

Windows 8 leak: an App Store for Windows - tech
(hx) 09:07 PM CEST - Jun,29 2010 - Post a comment / read (11)
The slides, discovered by Engadget, depict the futuristic app store as being easy to use and very prominent in the Windows 8 landscape. Microsoft would offer a store service to third-party software developers. The store would allow easy discoverability of applications both from within Windows and from the Web. The store would handle standard features like account management and software updates, as well as providing capabilities such as the ability to replicate applications and settings across different devices. The store would be curated, so only applications that reached a certain quality standard would be permitted. The basic model, then, is a cross between Apple's App Store and Valve's Steam.

The Windows 8 app store also looks like it'll extend Microsoft's cloud computing plans. Another interesting little nugget nestled within the Windows 8 presentation is facial recognition. The new OS will apparently log you in by using your computer's webcam to detect when your bonce enters the frame. That's clever and could suggest the Microsoft is planning to cram more Kinect-style smarts into Windows 8. Could gesture control be its secret weapon? The full OS is reportedly planned for 2012.

What do you think of Microsoft’s vision for Windows 8?
