  • AMD Embedded Technology Featured in Microsoft Surface 2.0 - AMD announced its contribution to Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface, a highly interactive, multi-touch computing platform that allows multiple users to collaboratively and simultaneously interact with content and each other. The AMD Athlon II X2 embedded processor, combined with AMD Radeon HD 6700M Series graphics, provides a strong foundation for Samsung SUR40 that delivers high performance and world-class graphics along with the reliability and low power required of this unique form factor.
  • Intel: Sandy Bridge doesn't have DirectX 11, but Ivy Bridge will - Intel's new 32nm Sandy Bridge processors may feature integrated graphics, but users will have to wait until Ivy Bridge, which will be manufactured using a 22nm process, if they want DirectX 11. Current Sandy Bridge chips only support DirectX 10.1.
  • GeForce GTX 595 has two GF110 - Nvidia's dual-chip Geforce GTX 595 packs two GF110 cores. This is the chip behind Geforce GTX 580 and it is not exactly the coolest chip around. We can also deny any plans for a GF104-based dual-card from Nvidia.
The card has a dual-slot cooler with three fans on it, at least the one from EVGA does and we can expect that the card will end up quite fast.
  • Best Graphics Cards For The Money: January 2011 - A new year is upon us, complete with all of the price drops and availability shifts that accompany a holiday laced with frantic launches by AMD and Nvidia. With new high-end GPUs from both companies settling into place, the discrete market is exciting
  • Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB Hard Drive Tested - In terms of performance there is little to fault about this drive when we consider that it is intended as a storage device. Peaks of over 120MB/s on read and write ensure that speed is there when the user needs it and a 64MB cache is in line with other high end drives. It was also great to see that power use was no more than 6w when in use and is rated at 0.8w when at sleep/standby. In addition to this, these drives are very quiet with no noticeable clicking when in use.
  • PC Motion Controller - One of the companies behind the technology of Kinect, PrimeSense, has announced plans to team up with PC maker ASUS for a similar camera controller that's designed to hook up to your PC. In a nutshell, the Xtion is a PrimeSense 3D depth camera built exclusively for PC, but with an important twist -- it connects to a pair of ASUS Wavi boxes, which wirelessly streams its data between your TV and a Windows PC over the 5GHz band.
  • ASUS 2011 Tablet Line Up - The Eee Slate EP121 is loaded with a 12.1inch multi-touch screen and an Intel Core i5 processor that packs 2.66 GHz of processing power. A break from the other Android-driven products, it ships with Microsoft's Windows 7 Home Premium OS.
  • Archos 70 Internet tablet with Android, 250GB hard drive -While other tablets are typically being limited to, maybe, 64GB or so of storage, the Archos 70 goes much bigger with its 250GB hard drive. Event hough it has that much more storage, the tablet is able to stay quite thin (0.55-inches) and light (14 ounces). Aside from the 'unique over-molded PVD stainless steel structured' design, the Archos 70 also comes with Android 2.2 Froyo compatibility, Flash 10.1, HDMI output, tethering support, 720p HD video playback, 3D animated photo frame, Appslib, WiFi, capacitive touchscreen, and a built-in webcam. The Archos 70 Internet tablet is on sale now for $350.
  • Nvidia unveils 'Project Denver': an ARM-compatible CPU for desktops and servers - Huang described the Project Denver processor as a "fully custom" ARM-compatible CPU. Although Nvidia partnered with ARM and used ARM's ISA, we get the sense that the processor microarchiteture itself may be one of Nvidia's own making, with a higher end target in terms of performance (and presumably also power consumption) than existing ARM-compatible CPUs. We have almost no additional details on this CPU at present, but we can now see quite clearly the outlines of how Nvidia intends to use its chip design prowess to compete with Intel and AMD.
  • Motorized Ergonomic Keyboard - The Smartfish ErgoMotion Keyboard is the world's first keyboard that uses a unique motion-system to create the most comfortable keyboarding experience ever. ErgoMotion is the latest innovation in ergonomics redefining what true comfort should be.
  • Microsoft warns of Office-related malware - Microsoft's Malware Protection Center issued a warning this week that it has spotted malicious code on the Internet that can take advantage of a flaw in Word and infect computers after a user does nothing more than read an e-mail. The flaw was addressed in November in a fix issued on Patch Tuesday, but with malicious code now spotted in the wild, the protection center apparently wants to be sure the update wasn't overlooked.
  • Opera Previews Touch Based Browser for Tablets (video) - Whether it's checking email, managing social networks or surfing the net, Opera's specialized browser for tablets provides you with the smoothest tablet and netbook experience on the market.
  • Android Trojan with botnet capabilities - A new Trojan affecting Android devices has recently emerged in China. Dubbed “Geinimi” based on its first known incarnation, this Trojan can compromise a significant amount of personal data on a user's phone and send it to remote servers. The most sophisticated Android malware we've seen to date, Geinimi is also the first Android malware in the wild that displays botnet-like capabilities. Once the malware is installed on a user's phone, it has the potential to receive commands from a remote server that allow the owner of that server to control the phone.
  • Obama wants an Internet ID for all Americans - The Obama administration is planning on handing over power to the U.S. Commerce department in a new effort to increase security on the Internet. The idea is to create an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, while the government says this is not a "National ID Card" it does appear to be very similar but restricted only to Internet activities.
  • Facebook is NOT Shutting Down March 15 - The fact that this absurd hoax spread so efficiently makes us wonder: Will people believe anything?
  • Private rocket blasts off into space (video) - check it out
  • Lasers are the future of heads up displays (video) - Although Audi teased its plans to incorporate laser-based HUDs in future models and brought a rough demo to CES (right), Pioneer had a more polished unit on hand utilizing RGB laser light source technology to project an interactive map onto the windshield along with a helpful little robot that displays traffic cameras, text messages, incoming phone calls and other programmable information. Pioneer calls it the Network Vision Heads Up Display Concept, and the key word is 'Network.'
  • Wirelessly Powered Tesla Car (video) - check it out
  • Digital Domain's Spectacular 'Making of Tron Legacy' - Visual News posted an exhilarating eight-minute long making of video that plays sort of as a long demo reel. They cover everything from the lightcycles to a young Kevin Flynn and all the amazing digital environments that make that movie so awesome to watch in IMAX 3D.
  • Tornado Alley 3D Trailer - It should be shown in IMAX 3D when available.
  • New Ice Age 4 Teaser - Manny, Diego, and Sid - embark upon their greatest adventure after cataclysm sets an entire continent adrift. Separated from the rest of the herd, they use an iceberg as a makeshift ship, which launches them on an epic seafaring quest. Manny and the gang are challenged like never before to become heroes and do the impossible, as they encounter exotic sea creatures, explore a brave new world, and battle ruthless pirates. And Scrat's reunion with his cursed nut catapults him to places no prehistoric squirrel has gone before. It arrives in theaters on July 13th, 2012.
  • Red Band Trailer for 'The Mechanic' - The Mechanic was directed by British filmmaker Simon West, of memorable blockbusters like Con Air, The General's Daughter, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and When a Stranger Calls. The screenplay was written by first-time feature writer Karl Gajdusek, whose only other writing credit is for the TV show "Dead Like Me". This is a remake of The Mechanic from 1972 starring Charles Bronson and directed by Michael Winner. The Mechanic was picked up by CBS Films and will arrive in theaters starting on January 28th early next year.

Razer Switchblade: 7-inch pocket gaming concept - tech
(hx) 11:13 PM CET - Jan,06 2011 - Post a comment / read (3)
There has been a bit of a surprise device that has appeared at CES this year from a brand best known for its PC peripherals. Razer has decided to show off a concept gaming netbook called Switchblade - a 7-inch gaming tablet with a multi-touch screen and keys that change based on the game that's being played (the keyboard on the bottom is a full-on LCD , but covered with physical keys), and WiFi and 3G connectivity. At its heart, Razer reckons the Switchblade would have a new Intel Atom processor, along with mini HDMI, USB 3.0 and audio in/out ports.

For the moment the Razer Switchblade is just a concept netbook. It may never see the light of day, but Razer claim to have had a team working on this for two years so they clearly want to get it to market.

An analyst firm is making a bold statement, one that contradicts Activison CEO Eric Hirschberg's declaration that the company will not be charging for Call of Duty multiplayer in 2011. The firm, Wedbush Morgan, states that the announcement will come in the coming months.
"Activision remains a top pick, primarily due to the company's potential to create and monetize a second tier of multiplayer online gaming for its Call of Duty franchise," the analysts say. "We expect this to occur during the first quarter of 2011."

3D PC gaming without glasses? - tech
(hx) 07:17 PM CET - Jan,04 2011 - Post a comment / read (2)
Engadget got a chance to see PC laptop that's under development by Toshiba that promises to deliver 3D PC gaming without glasses. The laptop has two parallax 3D LCDs and also has a webcam that can, in theory, keep track of your eyeline when you move.
It's no secret that Toshiba's got a thing for glasses-free 3D displays and that it's been putting together 3D concept laptops based on the technology, but according to Toshiba's director of product marketing Phil Osako, the company could be ready to bring a 3D laptop sans spectacles to market by the end of the year. Sounds good to us, but it's a pretty ambitious claim, considering the demo unit Toshiba's bringing to CES, which we got to see a few weeks ago, is very rough around the edges. As you can see in the images below, it had a very large red, chiseled contraption strapped to its lid -- although, we do have to say it gives it a rather Iron Man-esq aesthetic. All that aside, the Qosmio laptop packs some pretty innovative 3D technologies -- not only does it have two parallax 3D LCD, but its webcam has a special eye-tracking feature that knows when you shift your position. The goal of that is to provide "dead-zone free stereoscopic 3D images" or better viewing angles, but we can't really say we experienced that -- while the 3D clips looked, well three-dee straight on, slightly tilting to the left or right threw off the effect and we were stuck watching some blurry content. Like we said, the concept is really just a concept at this point, but it will certainly be interesting to watch what Toshiba is able to improve and put out by the end of 2011.
PC Motion Controller - tech

One of the companies behind the technology of Kinect, PrimeSense, has announced plans to team up with PC maker ASUS for a similar camera controller that's designed to hook up to your PC. In a nutshell, the Xtion is a PrimeSense 3D depth camera built exclusively for PC, but with an important twist -- it connects to a pair of ASUS Wavi boxes, which wirelessly streams its data between your TV and a Windows PC over the 5GHz band.
PrimeSense, the leader in sensing and recognition technologies, and ASUS, a leading enterprise in the new digital era, announced today that PrimeSense Immersive Natural Interactionâ„¢ solutions will be embedded in WAVI Xtion, a next generation user interface device developed by ASUS to extend PC usage to the living room. WAVI Xtion is scheduled to be commercially available during Q2 2011 and released worldwide in phases.

The WAVI Xtion media center for the PC leverages ultra-wide band wireless link and PrimeSense 3D sensing solution to provide controller-free interaction experiences in the living room. Users can browse multimedia content, access the Internet and social networks, and enjoy full body interaction in a more user-friendly and natural living room experience.

In addition to WAVI Xtion, ASUS also adopts PrimeSense solutions to introduce the world's first PC-exclusive 3D sensing professional development solution, Xtion PRO, for software developers to easily create their own gesture-based applications and software. Xtion PRO is scheduled to be commercially available in February 2011. Developers will also have the chance to sell their applications on the upcoming Xtion online Store.

Elliptic Labs will reveal their Touchless Gesture User Interface technology at CES 2011. Elliptic Labs sprung forth from the signal processing environment at the University of Oslo and what they've come up with is an iPod dock which creates a 'touchless zone' that extends out about 1 foot in front and to the sides of the iPad screen. Users can then initiate a number of gestures, much like on Microsoft Kinect, to manipulate onscreen content:

USC Institute for Creative Technologies developed the Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit (FAAST), which is middleware to facilitate integration of full-body control with games and VR applications. FAAST currently supports the PrimeSensor and the Microsoft Kinect using the OpenNI framework. This video demos how FAAST can be used to control off-the-shelf video games such as World of Warcraft. Since these games would not normally support motion sensing devices, FAAST emulates keyboard input triggered by body posture and specific gestures. These controls can be dynamically configured for different applications and games.

  • AMD Radeon HD 6950 & HD 6970 2GB Tested - At $299, the HD 6950 is in the unique position where there is not direct competition, so all in all, it's kind of a strange release, but one that still has reason to exist. It costs about $60 more than the HD 6870, and delivers a fair speed bump to warrant it. For those looking for a higher-end AMD offering, but don't quite want to shell out $370 for the HD 6970, the HD 6950 deserves some consideration. The HD 6970 is a little bit harder to conclude on, but for all intents and purposes, it performs about the same as NVIDIA's GTX 570.
  • EVGA GeForce GTX 570 Superclocked Video Card Review - The EVGA GeForce GTX 570 and the Radeon HD 6970 achieve similar performance on Call of Duty 4, Aliens vs. Predator and 3DMark 11 (sometimes one was a little bit faster, sometimes the other, but the difference was not significant). However, on the other three games, the EVGA GeForce GTX 570 Superclocked presented a huge advantage: up to 21% faster on Crysis Warhead, up to 28% faster on Far Cry 2, and up to 55% faster on Lost Planet 2.
  • Windows 8 could be shown at CES next month - Steve Ballmer could demonstrate a tablet and 'other companion devices' running Windows 8 at CES next month
  • Microsoft Shuts Down Office Genuine Advantage Antipiracy Program - The antipiracy tool, which forced customers to verify their version of Microsoft Office before downloading online content (like templates), has been pulled. It is unclear if it will be replaced by newer technology, but for now pirated and legal versions of MSO enjoy equal access to Microsoft's online resources.
  • Kinect Used in Forensic Medicine - This Video demonstrates, how the Microsoft Kinect can be used to control a PACS system, in this case OsiriX. The software is based on ofxKinect, libfreenect and open frameworks.
  • Real-Time 'Holographic' Video Chat Using Kinect - At this point, it just seems like the applications/uses for the Kinect are endless, doesn't it?
  • Notion Ink Adam tablet: Insane multitasking in action - The tablet world is really heating up, but it seems like the Notion Ink Adam tablet has been simmering on the back burner for far too long. When is this thing finally going to hit the market? I don't have the answer to that question just yet, but I have come across a real world demo video and, well, it's pretty hot. Without exaggeration, the demo has the Notion Ink Adam running no fewer than nine apps all at the same time!
  • UK Plans to Block All Internet Porn - THE UK Government is to combat the early sexualization of children by blocking internet pornography unless parents request it, it was revealed today. The move is intended to ensure that children are not exposed to sex as a routine by-product of the internet. It follows warnings about the hidden damage being done to children by sex sites. The biggest broadband providers, including BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk, are being called to a meeting next month by Ed Vaizey, the communications minister, and will be asked to change how pornography gets into homes. Instead of using parental controls to stop access to pornography - so-called "opting out" - the tap will be turned off at source. Adults will then have to "opt in."
  • CardSharp: the credit card that transforms into a knife - Designed to be stored in your wallet, the knife is the dimensions of a credit card, but with three little folds it transforms into the utility knife you see before you. The built-in protective sheath protects you from injury and the stainless steel surgical blade from blunting , plus its composition makes it slimmer and lighter than standard knives. Weighing in at just 13 grams and measuring just 120 x 120 x 5mm. It's set to ship Q1 2011 for $25 US in your choice of natural stainless steel or black Teflon coated blad.
  • DARwIn-OP Humanoid Robot Demo - Virginia Tech roboticist Dennis Hong shows off the new DARwIn-OP open-source robot at the IEEE Humanoids 2010 conference in Nashville, Tenn.
  • Body Drum Kit (video) - I guess you all remember Daito Manabe his Electric Stimulus project where he stimulated his facial muscles with small electric pulses, synced to music. Daito and Masaki Teruoka developed the next step of this system. Together with myoelectric sensors, they can make music by tapping on each other's skin. Just watch the video!

  • Drinking for Keeps: The Double Grenade (video) - Here's a viral video of a guy celebrating the end of finals by pounding a 'double grenade' in under a minute. What is a 'double grenade,' you ask? No, it has nothing to do with hooking-up with two cockblocking fat chicks. Rather, it's a huge, meta Jager Bomb. The 'shot' -- if you want to call it that -- consists of one shot of tequila, one shot of Jag, two shots of vodka, two shots of Blue Curacao, and about a can and a half of Red Bull.

TechNews - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 brings speed - tech

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 Review  - Compared to the GTX 580, the 512 CUDA core part, there is an average of 15-18% performance delta. The price difference? 57%. Yeah, that puts things in perspective doesn't it? The $349 area that really only had the 2GB version of the HD 5870 to offer now has a much improved selection. Overall, the GeForce GTX 570 doesn't bring anything really new to the table in terms of graphics technology but it does bring performance that was once only available to $430+ options to a new, lower price point of $349. The GTX 570 also runs cooler and quieter than the GTX 480 giving NVIDIA yet another reason to go ahead with this upgrade. If nothing else, NVIDIA's latest iteration in their DX11 series of GPUs continues to pin AMD against the wall and gamers looking for an upgrade in this price range will be pleased with the results. Also HotHardware has a 12-page review and is one of the most informative, as it looks at how well the Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 performs running a few graphic hungry games, such as HAWX and Quake Wars. HotHardware seems to have some varying results with the 570 compared to the 480, saying that performance of each card depends on which game was played. They loved how quiet and fast the card was but did not like how power-hungry and how hot it got.
  • Overclocked GeForce GTX 480 Shoot-Out: MSI vs. Gigabyte - The MSI N480GTX Lightning and Gigabyte GeForce GTX 480 SOC both performed very well throughout testing. Both of the cards were measurably faster than a reference GeForce GTX 480, as expected. Overall, the Gigabyte card proved to be faster than MSI’s offering due to the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 480 SOC’s higher GPU core and shader clocks, but the MSI card’s faster memory gave it an edge in AvP. In light of NVIDIA’s recent GPU releases, both of these cards slightly trail the GTX 580, but typically run on par with or slightly better than a GTX 570.
  • Intel, AMD to phase out VGA by 2015 - Intel aims to accelerate the adoption of DisplayPort and HDMI video interfaces, and in the process, it's looking to cut the cord not only on VGA ports, but also the digital LVDS interface that connects most laptops to their displays. The chip giant's products will cease supporting LVDS in 2013, and VGA support will be phased out two years after that. Lest you think Intel is alone in its bid to rid PCs of their old-school D-sub connectors, it's being joined by Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, LG, and even AMD. The world's #2 CPU maker intends to follow a schedule similar to Intel's, eliminating LVDS support in 2013 and phasing out VGA by 2015.

  • Rubin shows Android Honeycomb running on Motorola tablet - Illustrating the high expectations Google has for the tablet market, Honeycomb appears to be optimized for these mobile devices. From what we've seen, Google has been leveraging the extra screen space giving the Honeycomb desktop a sleek redesign, a fancy new app grid and an updated Gmail app. Motorola's tablet looks to be button-free and Rubin revealed it will be video-chat capable and packing a NVIDIA processor and a dual core 3D processor. The name is yet to be determined, but it will be on Verizon WIreless and is code-named 'Stingray.' Both are slated to launch sometime in the next year.

Android 2.3 is Here - tech
(hx) 11:26 PM CET - Dec,06 2010 - Post a comment
Google's Android Development team have announced the official arrival of Android 2.3, codenamed Gingerbread.
Enhancements for game development: To improve overall responsiveness, we’ve added a new concurrent garbage collector and optimized the platform’s overall event handling. We’ve also given developers native access to more parts of the system by exposing a broad set of native APIs. From native code, applications can now access input and sensor events, EGL/OpenGL ES, OpenSL ES, and assets, as well a new framework for managing lifecycle and windows. For precise motion processing, developers can use several new sensor types, including gyroscope.

Rich multimedia: To provide a great multimedia environment for games and other applications, we’ve added support for the new video formats VP8 and WebM, as well as support for AAC and AMR-wideband encoding. The platform also provides new audio effects such as reverb, equalization, headphone virtualization, and bass boost.

New forms of communication: The platform now includes support for front-facing camera, SIP/VOIP, and Near Field Communications (NFC), to let developers include new capabilities in their applications.

GeForce GTX 580 vs. GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLI - tech
(hx) 10:10 PM CET - Dec,02 2010 - Post a comment / read (2)
Upgrading your video card but having a hard time deciding which upgrade path you should take? HardOCP's GeForce GTX 580 vs. GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLI evaluation should help you decide which road is right for you. Here's a taster:
What strikes us about our gameplay experiences today is the fact that with GTX 460 1GB SLI the 1GB of RAM on the GTX 460 may be holding it back at higher resolutions with AA. In all of our gameplay testing, we were surprised how well GTX 460 1GB SLI keeps up with the more expensive GeForce GTX 580. While it comes close, and at times exceeds it in framerate, it doesn’t deliver the same gameplay experience. The GeForce GTX 580 has more RAM on board, 1.5GB to be exact, and this seems to be giving it an advantage in some DX11 games when AA is enabled at high levels.

The game that showed the most fluctuation in performance with the GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLI was Civilization V. in this game, the GTX 580 maintained much smoother performance with 8X MSAA enabled. While GTX 460 1GB SLI had higher framerates, its framerates were all over the place. The change in framerate is noticed by gamers, and it can be quite annoying as you are playing the game and the framerate suddenly drops. The fact is, the GTX 580 not only maintained smoother performance in that game, but also allowed a higher playable setting by further turning on higher AA transparency options.

We experienced this fluctuation in framerate in many games, where the GTX 460 1GB was also pulling in lower minimum framerates. It seems if you want to crank up the AA settings very high, a single GeForce GTX 580 is going to give you more room to do that, and makes those settings useable. If you are running at lower settings however, with lesser amounts of AA, then the GTX 460 1GB SLI may produce higher framerates depending on the game. In F1 2010 we were running at a lower AA setting, 4X AA, but the GTX 580 was still faster, so it isn’t always the case that lower settings means the GTX 460 1GB will be faster.

We have found it to be very game dependent, with no clear pattern on which type of game will allow one video card to provide better performance than the other. The overall feeling we got is that with DX11 games that use more graphics card RAM, the GTX 460 1GB SLI will run into limitations at higher resolutions with AA. The GeForce GTX 580, overall, offers smooth and consistent gameplay at high resolutions with AA in DX11 games. And worth mentioning, with the GeForce GTX 580 you can install a second card to boost framerates well beyond GTX 460 1GB SLI.

CoD Black Ops GPU & CPU performance in-depth - tech
(hx) 01:07 AM CET - Nov,17 2010 - Post a comment / read (16)
The chaps over at TechSpot have tested 19 graphics card configurations, using AMD and Nvidia GPUs that range from the uber-expensive models to budget-minded offerings. On the CPU front, scaling and performance comparisons between dual, triple and quad core processors inside. Here's a taster:
Getting back on topic, it appears that Black Ops has very similar hardware requirements to those of Call of Duty: World at War. In fact, when comparing the 1920x1200 data from both games we found that frame rates recorded in Black Ops are in some cases slightly higher. Of course, this is far from an apples to apples comparison given that World at War is a 2-year-old game and we weren't able to test it using any DirectX 11 capable graphics cards at the time. That said, it's interesting to note that the GeForce 9800 GT was actually 1fps faster in Black Ops than in World at War, while the GeForce GTX 260 was 2fps faster. In other words, it looks like if you were able to play World at War you will have no difficulty with Black Ops.

For those gaming at 1680x1050 or lower
, a relatively affordable Radeon HD 5770 or GeForce GTS 450 graphics card is all you really need. The 1920x1200 resolution bumps our minimum recommended graphics cards to either the GeForce GTX 260 or Radeon HD 5830. Although the developer recommends a minimum of a GeForce 8600GT or Radeon X1950 Pro, they certainly don't have the best visual quality settings in mind.

Activision/Treyarch also recommend an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 or AMD Phenom X3 8750 processor, which is interesting given our findings. The Core 2 Duo E8500 that we tested with managed just 47fps at 1920x1200 with a Radeon HD 5970, and therefore it stands to reason that regardless of the graphics card used this is the frame rate cap. However, we tend to agree more with the AMD Phenom X3 8750 processor, as we found that even the Athlon II X3 445 was faster than the Core 2 Duo E8500 with an average of 52fps. While the triple-core AMD processors appear adequate, we would still recommend looking into a quad-core as they provided the best performance in this game. The truly interesting results came when looking at the Core i5 and i7 chips, which were head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. The results were so extreme that we re-tested several times, but in the end they held true and it would appear that Call of Duty: Black Ops has been optimized for these processors.

Finally, let's take a look at the classic GPU battle between AMD and Nvidia. At 2560x1600 the dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 remained the fastest single graphics card available, as it beat the new GeForce GTX 580 by a 9% margin and the GTX 480 by a 25% margin. Meanwhile, the new GeForce GTX 580 was 15% faster than the GTX 480. The Radeon HD 5870 out-muscled the GeForce GTX 470, while the Radeon HD 6870 had just enough gas to push ahead of the GeForce GTX 460. The GTX 460 on the other hand was faster than the Radeon HD 5850 and 5830. Overall, based on the pricing for each graphics card, the performance was very much neck and neck right across the field.

GeForce GTX 580 vs. Radeon HD 5970 2GB Performance - tech
(hx) 12:23 AM CET - Nov,16 2010 - Post a comment
The chaps over at HardOCP published their GeForce GTX 580 vs. Radeon HD 5970 2GB performance evaluation. If you want to know how the GeForce GTX 580 compares to AMD's CrossFireX on a card, this article is for you.
The HD 5970 delivers faster gaming framerates compared to the GeForce GT 580. However, if you look at the actual usability of those frame the picture is a bit different. The GeForce GTX 580 allows a consistently higher level of the gameplay experience compared to the Radeon HD 5970. We were able to game at higher settings with the GTX 580 than we were with the Radeon HD 5970. The most important factor, beyond framerates, is the visual quality and experience returned by the product. The GeForce GTX 580 allows a more immersive, smoother, and consistent quality of gameplay.

The Radeon HD 5970 is a tad less expensive at $469.99 after $30 MIR (and supports Eyefinity) versus the GeForce GTX 580 at $499 currently. If you already have a Radeon HD 5970, keep it, it is a great card and you already know that if you own one. If you are on a lesser generation, and looking to upgrade right now, no question, get the GeForce GTX 580 if you have the cash. The extra money spent will pay off with its higher VRAM capacity, and higher level of consistent gameplay experience. Plus, you can always hook up two GTX 580 cards in SLI that will surely blow the 5970 away, if you have happen to be independently wealthy.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 Video Card Tested - tech
(hx) 06:49 PM CET - Nov,09 2010 - Post a comment / read (4)
The chaps over HardOCP have posted their evaluation of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580 video card today for your viewing pleasure. How well does the GTX 580 perform?
NVIDIA has made some very interesting claims about the new GeForce GTX 580. First, NVIDIA claims the GTX 580 is the fastest DX11 GPU on the planet. With a bold statement like that, NVIDIA had better hope it really is when gaming; not just commanding leads in canned benchmarks. We can say with the utmost certainty that our gaming has proven this claim to be correct. In all of our DX11 gaming, the GeForce GTX 580 came out on top, delivering the highest framerates, and the best gameplay experience. In F1 2010 the GTX 580 consistently had the highest framerates. In Civ5 the GeForce GTX 480 had a superior gameplay experience, and faster performance than both video cards. In Metro 2033 and BC2 this lead continued, and the GeForce GTX 580 offered higher performance.

Another claim was that the GeForce GTX 580 would be 20-30% faster than the GeForce GTX 480. We never saw a full 30% faster performance in real-world gaming, so if this does exist in some game, this would be the extreme. We did often experience a 20% performance improvement over the GeForce GTX 480; some games more, some games less. The kind of performance advantage you will see varies on the game as expected. We didn’t see a clear pattern from this evaluation as to which API or what kind of game would allow more of a performance improvement. In fact, the game that seemed to provide us the most performance advantage over the GTX 480 was Medal of Honor, which is an Unreal 3 Engine DX9 game. Generally though you can expect approximately a 20% performance advantage on average when comparing GTX 580 to GTX 480 in actual gameplay. In comparison to the Radeon HD 5870, we were surprised as to how well the aging 5870 holds up against the GeForce GTX 480. In all games however, the GeForce GTX 580 surpassed the Radeon HD 5870. We experienced the GeForce GTX 580 to be about 30% better performing than the Radeon HD 5870 on average. Once again, Medal of Honor showed the greatest performance difference, with the GTX 580 being 42% faster than the Radeon HD 5870.

The GeForce GTX 580 is a huge success for NVIDIA. We are greatly impressed with this new Fermi GF110 GPU. The fact that NVIDIA was able to provide 20-30% more performance, with slightly less power utilization, and a quiet running video card compared to the GTX 480, demands kudos. We talk about efficiency often, and AMD has some of the most efficient GPUs on the planet. The GeForce GTX 580 from NVIDIA is also an efficient GPU. There is a tremendous amount of efficient performance in the GTX 580, and NVIDIA is able to keep that performance inside an acceptable power and noise envelope.
Another reviews can be found on PC Perspective, Overclockers Club, Legit Reviews, Bit-Tech, Benchmark Reviews and Hardware Heaven
There is no doubt that NVIDIA was late to the DX 11 party, allowing AMD to stack the deck against them. Here they are seven months later with their competition getting ready to drop yet another high end DX 11 card into the market. NVIDIA has struck first and set the benchmark to beat. They have done this in a convincing fashion with the GF 110 based GTX 580. This is the card we hoped the GTX 480 would have been when it was introduced. Through refinements to the Fermi architecture, NVIDIA has finally upped the ante in the video card wars. The architectural improvements come in the form of full speed FP-16 texture filtering and new tile formats for improved Z cull efficiency. The hardware was redesigned down to the transistor level for improved efficiency that allowed for increased clock speeds with lower power consumption. On top of that, the GTX 580 gets the full compliment of 512 CUDA cores (up from 480), an additional Streaming Multiprocessor and an extra Polymorph Engine. During the game testing, it was evident that there is nothing but a high-end dual GPU setup that can compete with it in heads-up fashion. In many of the games, the GTX 580 was even able to deliver performance higher than the reference based HD 5970. That is some serious firepower!

All this graphics firepower allows you to increase the eye candy in the games you play and to take advantage of NVIDIA's arsenal of technologies. Technologies such as: PhysX in titles like Mafia II, Batman Arkham Asylum and Metro 2033; the strength of its tessellation engines in games such as in Hawx 2; and then its parallel processing strengths in Just Cause 2 where CUDA is used to simulate realistic water. It does not stop there. NVIDIA's 3DVision system and Surround technology for a 3D Surround experience needs to be seen to be believed. The GTX 580, much like the GTX 480, is Tri-SLI capable for an immense increase in graphics horsepower. This should allow for excellent frame rates in resolutions up to 7680 x 1600. If that much power is not enough there is always the ability to overclock the GTX 580. I was concerned that the voltage monitoring and driver package would let the performance degrade when you start overclocking due to higher than expected power demands when increasing the voltage to the core. In our press briefing, I was told that would not be the case. So, as soon as utilities are available with the ability to increase the voltage on the core, we will take another stab at overclocking. When it came to this overclocking exercise, the amount of headroom left on this card was a meager 56Mhz on the core and 106Mhz on the memory. Not really what I was expecting after seeing the improvements in the overclocking ability of the GF 106 and GF 108 silicon but it's still something. Overclocking did allow for increased performance when push came to shove but at this level, it's just icing on the cake.

By using less power, NVIDIA went back to the drawing board for the cooling solution and decided on a more efficient Vapor Chamber heat sink assembly much like the one used by AMD on the HD 5970. This allowed the card to stay relatively cool under load while still keeping reasonable noise signatures. Under load, I saw 81 degrees Celsius when the card controlled the fan at stock speeds and a cool 59 degrees Celsius when overclocked and the fan speed was set to the maximum 85% ratio. This is a big improvement over the GTX 480. Pricing on a card of this caliber is going to run on the high end of the scale but when you buy a Ferrari you know it's going to cost you a few pennies. What you get with the GTX 580 is the 'Bionic Man' version of the GTX 480 that has been rebuilt to be stronger, faster, quieter and cooler running - that can play any game out there and defend its territory with impunity. With NVIDIA's second winner at the top end of the single GPU market, I can't wait to see what happens in the next few weeks. It's gonna be interesting.

(hx) 11:55 PM CEST - Oct,22 2010 - Post a comment / read (5)
AMD has just released that Catalyst 10.10 drivers here. There is also a 10.10a hotfix here. The major change of course is added official support for Radeon HD 6800 series GPUs, but also a big set of new features, namely support for Blu-ray 3D, Stereoscopic 3D powered by Dynamic Digital Depth (DDD) and iZ3D; AMD Catalyst Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) technology; added hardware video acceleration for HD WMV, and enahnced Dynamic Contrast video controls. It doesn't stop here, a boat-load of game and GPU-specific performance increments were announced, that covers a number of Radeon HD 5000 series GPUs, which are detailed below. It apparently improves Starcraft 2 and Alien's vs Predator performance, and enables Morphological Anti-Aliasing.
