GeForce Battlefield 3 Beta Performance Guide - tech
(hx) 09:46 PM CEST - Oct,02 2011 - Post a comment
The guys at GeForce.com posted a Battlefield 3 performance guide with details on how Nvidia cards perform in the open beta:
GeForce 8800/9800 GT
We start the performance evaluation with the GeForce 8800/9800 GT—the most popular graphics card according to the Steam Hardware Survey and the GPU that is listed in the minimum system requirements of Battlefield 3. True to DICE's word, the GeForce 8800 GT does indeed play Battlefield 3, though at a humble resolution of 1280 x 1024 and at Low Quality settings. Needless to say, this is not how Battlefield 3 looks in the trailers, but the game does run, as promised.

GeForce GTX 260 The GeForce GTX 260 is the fourth most popular graphics card on Steam, used by 4.19% of gamers on the service as of August 2011. Though three years old, the card puts up a respectable performance. You can play the game at 1680 x 1050 at Medium Quality. As noted in the graphics quality section, at Medium, the game looks quite a bit better than Low but doesn't have the polish of higher quality settings.

GeForce GTX 460 The GeForce GTX 460 is the first card that gives you that unique Battlefield 3 "look" while maintaining solid framerates. At 1680 x 1050, the card lets you play at High Quality settings, which gives you most of the graphical bells and whistles, including antialiasing, ambient occlusion, detailed geometry, and detailed textures. The GeForce GTX 460 performs very well at this setting.

GeForce GTX 560/560Ti/570 With any of these three graphics cards, you are getting a full Battlefield 3 experience. Simply put, this is 1080p at High Quality at 40 fps or more. With the GTX 570, you can bump individual settings a little higher (for example, Ultra quality Textures or Effects) or you can opt to play at higher framerates on the same preset. If your budget is more limited, the GTX 560 is a perfectly sound option.

GeForce GTX 580 For those who are lucky enough to own a GeForce GTX 580, expect a near-perfect experience. We're talking about 1080p at fully maxed out settings (Ultra). You have to hand it over to DICE for their lighting engine; at Ultra quality, the radiosity lighting, soft shadows, and ambient occlusion come together and play off each other to produce scenes so rich and nuanced that they look like they had been art directed. At this quality, the game plays like a trailer.

GeForce GTX 580 SLI / GTX 590 With two Fermi GPUs, the game plays at maximum quality but at the expanded resolution of 2560 x 1600. Needless to say, the game is startlingly beautiful. Do not show this to your console friends. They will hate you.
Is Chrome Poised to Pass Firefox in 2011? - tech
(hx) 12:29 AM CEST - Oct,02 2011 - Post a comment / read (22)
Google Chrome is the up-and-coming browser in 2011, with its sights set on passing the #2 browser Firefox before the end of this year. If the trends continue unchanged, Chrome could just possibly pass Internet Explorer in 2012 to become the world’s most popular browser.
Google's Chrome is poised to become the second-biggest Web browser in the world before the end of the year, according to StatCounter. If trends as measured by the Ireland-based Web statistics firm's analytics tools hold up, Chrome will pass Mozilla's Firefox sometime in December and trail only Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) in global average user share.

Computerworld's Gregg Keizer looked at the trend lines in user growth for the three browsers as presented by StatCounter (graph below) and saw Chrome growing in popularity at about double the rate as projected over 12 months that Firefox and IE were each losing share since January of this year.

Firefox started 2010 with about 31 percent of user share and was sitting at 26.8 percent as of last Wednesday, according to StatCounter. Chrome, meanwhile, rocketed up from just over 15 percent user share in January to 23.6 percent in September. That puts the two browsers on a collision course to swap spots in the overall user share rankings when (or more precisely, if) Chrome climbs to about 25 percent of user share later this year and meets Firefox on its way down.

IE—owning 46 percent of user share in January and less than 42 percent as October begins—would be next in Google's sights, though a Chrome takeover of the top spot wouldn't happen until next August or so, extrapolating StatCounter's numbers outwards. If Chrome and IE both maintain their exact current trends in user share growth, Chrome would meet IE at about the 35 percent user share mark in the late summer of 2012 before taking over the No. 1 browser spot.

Microsoft urges companies to dump Windows XP - tech
(hx) 11:41 PM CEST - Sep,17 2011 - Post a comment / read (29)
In an new post on the official Windows blog site, Microsoft's Stephen L Rose stated that there are two big reasons for leaving Windows XP behind. One of them is, of course, the fact that there is a new version of the OS, Windows 7, that's a big improvement over Windows XP (no mention at all of Windows Vista).
Wouldn’t it be great if the glory days lasted forever? But reality is trophies get dusty, records are broken, and what it took to be the best ten years ago, just isn’t enough for today’s standards. Things get better, faster. And eventually, it’s time to move from good enough to something much better.

Windows XP had an amazing run and millions of PC users are grateful for it. But it’s time to move on. Two reasons: 1) Extended support for Windows XP is running out in less than 1000 days, and 2) there’s an OS out there that’s much better than Windows XP.

On April 8, 2014, security patches and hotfixes for all versions of Windows XP will no longer be available. So bottom line, PC’s running Windows XP will be vulnerable to security threats. Furthermore, many third party software providers are not planning to extend support for their applications running on Windows XP, which translates to even more complexity, security risks, and ultimately, added management costs for your IT department if you’re still managing Windows XP environments. Hard Reset Gameplay Performance Review - tech
(hx) 11:00 PM CEST - Sep,16 2011 - Post a comment
PC exclusive shooter Hard Reset landed a few days ago, and the chaps over at HardOCP have posted their gameplay [erformance review. Here's a taster:
As the four most expensive video cards in this review, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580, the AMD Radeon HD 6970, the GeForce GTX 570, and the Radeon HD 6950 were all playable at 2560x1600 with MLAA and 16X AF, as well as the highest available in-game settings, represented by the "Ultra" setting.

The Radeon HD 6870 was on the edge of being playable at 2560x1600, and even averaged about 40FPS at that resolution, but there were too many unpleasant dips below 30FPS. For some gamers it might have been tolerable, but we didn't find it to be so. We lowered the resolution to 1920x1200 and that problem went away. The GeForce GTX 560 Ti was not even approaching playability at 2560x1600, but was also just fine at 1920x1200.

Deus Ex Human Revolution Performance Test - tech
(hx) 06:24 PM CEST - Aug,29 2011 - Post a comment / read (7)
The chaps over at TechSpot have published their Deus Ex: Human Revolution GPU & CPU Performance Test. Here's a taster:
We were pleasantly surprised by how well Deus Ex: Human Revolution ran on affordable graphics cards at 1680x1050. The GeForce GTX 550 Ti and Radeon HD 6770 were able to deliver playable performance using maximum visual quality settings. Moreover, it only took a Radeon HD 6850 or GeForce GTX 560 for silky smooth performance.

Although I have noticed quite a few complaints about the graphics in Deus Ex: Human Revolution I believe they are pretty impressive. Granted this is not the most amazing looking game of 2011, but the visuals are still very good.

Despite the fact the game doesn't support the traditional multi-sampling or super-sampling anti-aliasing methods, we found that MLAA and FXAA both looked very good. In terms of performance there was very little between the two for the most part, and when using an AMD graphics card we failed to find any difference at all. Nvidia users should stick with FXAA as it will likely guarantee the best performance.

When looking at processor performance we found that the clock speed had little influence on frame rates. Based on our findings any processor capable of supporting just two threads is going to perform poorly on Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The game was able to utilize more than four threads, but any of today’s quad-core processors should more than suffice, whether it's an AMD Phenom II X4 or Intel Core i3/i5/i7.

Those hoping to play at high resolutions such as 2560x1600 or across multiple monitors using the highest possible visuals, will likely need to take advantage of multi-GPU technology. The good news is from day one Crossfire and SLI technology worked flawlessly using the latest AMD and Nvidia drivers.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution looks to be a fairly well-polished game and it's certainly been sometime since we were able to provide a complete performance analysis on a game without having to wait for a series of patches. That being said, the game did receive its first patch just 3 days after release which addressed start up crashes and lengthy load times.

Windows 8 file management (video) - tech
(hx) 02:03 AM CEST - Aug,25 2011 - Post a comment / read (19)
In Monday's preview of USB 3.0 support in Windows 8, Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky hinted that we'd soon get a glimpse of the upcoming operating system's revamped file copy interface.

Copying, moving, renaming, and deleting are far and away the most heavily used features within Windows Explorer, representing 50% of total command usage (based on Windows 7 telemetry data). For Windows 8, we want to make sure that using these core file management commands, which we collectively refer to as “copy jobs,” is a great experience.

We know from telemetry data (which is based on hundreds of millions of individuals opting in to provide anonymous data about product usage), that although 50% of these jobs take less than 10 seconds to complete, many people are also doing much larger jobs, 20% of which take more than 2 minutes to complete. Prior versions of Windows Explorer can handle these kinds of jobs, but Explorer isn’t optimized for high-volume jobs or for executing multiple copy jobs concurrently.

Usability studies confirm what most of us know—there are some pretty cluttered and confusing parts of the Windows 7 copy experience. This is particularly true when people need to deal with files and folders that have the same file names, in what we call file name collisions. Lastly, our telemetry shows that 5.61% of copy jobs fail to complete for a variety of different reasons ranging from network interruptions to people just canceling the operation.

NVIDIA ForceWare WHQL Drivers v280.26 - tech
(hx) 11:21 PM CEST - Aug,09 2011 - Post a comment / read (1)
NVIDIA has just released new WHQL-certified ForceWare drivers (v275.33) for GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500-series desktop GPUs as well as ION desktop GPUs. There are drivers for Windows Vista, Windows 7 -32-bit, Windows Vista 64-bit, Windows 7 64-bit, Windows XP, and Windows XP 64-bit. The GeForce 280.26 drivers add support for a handful of new 3D Vision projections, including the Acer X1111, BenQ W710ST, and NEC NP-V300W, as well as ViewSonic's V3D245 3D Vision monitor. Nvidia also shoehorned over two dozen 3D Vision game profiles, and updated three others (Crysis 2, Deep Black, and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition). In addition to plenty of love for 3D Vision, Nvidia addressed a bunch of issues, both for single GPU and multi-GPU users.
Resolved Single GPU Issues
-When installing the driver in Windows safe mode, the driver installation fails with an "NVIDIA Installer failed" message: The NVIDIA PhysX driver installer is not compatible with Microsoft's policy for safe mode, so the failure occurs when the PhysX driver is installed. To install the NVIDIA graphics driver in safe mode, deselect the PhysX driver from the list of NVIDIA driver components during safe mode installation.
-GeForce 400 Series: "Out of Memory" error messages occur when loading certain saved DirectX 9 games with 3D Vision enabled.
-GeForce 500 series: Crysis 2 – when played using DirectX 9, weapons become semi-transparent.
-GeForce 500 Series: Crysis 2 "Seat of Power" – weapons are not drawn correctly.
-GeForce 500 series: World of Tanks – the game hitches and stutters, especially while moving around the view.
-GeForce GTX 280M: "Could not find compatible graphics hardware" error occurs when installing the notebook driver.

Resolved Multi-GPU Issues
-3D Surround, GeForce 400 series: With three displays connected and enabled, after connecting a ourth display, if cannot be enabled from the NVIDIA Control Panel.
-3D Surround, GeForce 500/400 series: Two displays from the Surround group go blank upon enabling extended view on a display connected to the non-Surround group GPU.
-3D Vision: 3-way SLI is slower than 2-way SLI in 3D Vision mode.
3-Way SLI, GeForce 500 series: Displays connected to the HDMI connection on the second or third GPU cannot be enabled from the NVIDIA Control Panel: To workaround, enable the displays using the Windows Display Settings page.
-Optimus, Notebook GPUs: With the NVIDIA GPU display set as the secondary Dualview display, a YouTube HD video in full-screen mode is blank the first time it is played.
-SLI, GeForce 500 Series: Crysis 2 "Seat of Power" – weapons are not drawn correctly.
-SLI, GeForce 500 Series: Dirt 3 – the game stutters within the menu and occasionally during a race.
-SLI, GeForce 200 Series: Crysis 2 – the game flickers when both PhysX and SLI are enabled.
-SLI, GeForce 200 Series: F.E.A.R. – poor SLI performance.
-SLI, GeForce 400 Series: Dragon Age 2 – shadows glitches occur.
-SLI, GeForce 400 series: After restart the system, the PhysX processor setting on the Set SLI and PhysX configuration page switches from "Auto" to "GPU."
-SLI: Homefront – with SLI is enabled, shadows flicker in the game.
-SLI: The NVIDIA Control Panel reports that the first GPU is not installed in a high-performance PCIe slot: This message can be ignored. It is an obsolete message that no longer applies, and will be removed in a future driver release.

  • AMD's First Bulldozer Chips Arriving Sept. 26 -  Bulldozer-based Opterons will emerge on September 26. The Opteron 4200 series will feature processors with either six or eight Bulldozer cores-or going by the modular design of those chips, either three or four two-core modules. Interlagos, then, becomes the new powerhouse in AMD's server lineup. The upcoming Opteron 6200 series will have chips with 12 and 16 Bulldozer cores. Valencia is the next stage in AMD's Opteron 4000 series aimed at single-socket and dual-socket, cost-optimized, energy efficient servers. It will be succeeded in 2012 by a CPU codenamed Sepang that has up to ten Bulldozer cores.
  • Zotac Introduces GeForce GTX 580 Infinity Edition - The Zotac GeForce GTX 580 Infiinity Edition uses a watercooling kit from CooIT which allows up to 25% decrease in temperature. The Infinity Edition GTX 580 has an overclocked core frequency of 815MHz and memory frequency of 4100MHz. Other features include 512 stream processors, 1.5GB memory size, 384-bit memory interface, 1 x mini HDMI output and 2 x DVI outputs.
  • Windows 8 Excludes Dolby Technologies - Dolby Labs reports that Microsoft has decided not to include Dolby technology in the upcoming release of Windows 8. This is a surprising move on Microsoft's part considering Dolby is included in Windows 7. Dolby shares fell 18% on Friday on the news. The absence of Dolby technologies in current Windows 8 builds does not inherently imply that the OS will not support DVD playback or digital surround sound. It is possible that Microsoft will choose to license these technologies from another provider
  • Microsoft Offers $250,000 For Security Defense Research - Microsoft just announced that is giving away a total of $250,000 in BlueHat prize rewards for "innovative" computer security research. Winners will be announced at next year's Black Hat security conference, with the grand prize being $200,000 and second prize being $50,000, Katie Moussouris, head of Microsoft's Security Community Outreach and Strategy team, said in a conference call from the conference being held here.
  • Happy Birthday: World Wide Web turns 20 - Berners-Lee, now Director of the World Wide Web Consortium, used concepts from earlier hypertext systems to write a proposal in March 1989 for what would eventually become the World Wide Web. In November 1990, Berners-Lee and Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliau proposed to use hypertext to link and access information of various kinds. The project was publicly introduced in December 1990 at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. Berners-Lee used a NeXT Computer as the world's first web server and also to write the first web browser, WorldWideWeb. By Christmas 1990, Berners-Lee had built all the tools necessary for a working Web: the first Web browser (which was a web editor as well), the first web server, and the first web pages, which of course described the project itself.

Or, as lockpicking expert Marc Weber Tobias demonstrated, you can stick a wire in the tiny display light above the keypad and instantly render all of that 'security' irrelevant.
  • Minecraft creator sued by Bethesda Softworks - In a case of "scrappy but popular indie developer" vs "big game publisher" Minecraft's creator Markus "Notch" Persson has announced on his official blog site that his company Mojang is now facing a lawsuit filed by Bethesda Softworks. The issue is the title for Mojang's next game Scrolls which was announced earlier this year. Persson is not directly involved in the development of this game which is a fantasy tactical strategy title which also uses collectible cards.

The hacktivist group likened Google's actions to the stories of activists being banned from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, as well as governments blocking various websites using Internet censorship tools. As a result, Anonymous has decided to create its own social network: Anonplus, located at anonplus.com.
  • Shocker: Most people using Google+ are male - Earlier this week Google,as part of its latest financial results, confirmed that Google+ already has over 10 million registered users. But who exactly are all of these people who are jumping in to check out Google+? Two separate web sites, SocialStatistics.com and FindPeopleFirst.com, both claim that a large majority of Google+ users, at least so far, are male. FindPeopleFirst.com says the numbers of males on the service come out to 73.7 percent. SocialStatistics.com claims the number of male users are even higher at 86.8 percent. In hindsight the overwhelming number of males is not that surprising as tech services such as Google+ tend to be adopted first by males before the general populace begins to use it.

  • Intel discontinues its Core i7-970 due to lack of demand - Launched at the tail end of Summer 2010, the chip runs at 3.2GHz and under 'Turbo Mode' can clock up to 3.46GHz. The 32nm part with thermal design power of 130W almost immediately received a significant price drop, and is currently being hawked for somewhere in the region of £430, if you can find it in stock. Now Intel has announced that its Product Discontinuance Program Support for the chip began on 6 July 2011 and will end with the firm shipping the last Core i7-970 chip a year later. For boxed chips, that is to say those in retail packaging, after 27 January 2012 it'll be first come first served for remaining stocks.
  • Windows Vista SP1 support being retired on July 12 - Vista's Service Pack 1 will exit all support on July 12, this month's Patch Tuesday. According to Computer World, that will be last time security updates will be issued for the aging operating system. Microsoft supports its business products for 10 years, the first five in what it calls "mainstream support," and the second five in "extended support." In extended support, only companies with special contracts get non-security fixes. Microsoft does continue (in most cases) to provide security fixes for all persons and companies during the total ten year period. This situation is different from Office XP, which is now officially being retired. Vista SP1 users can upgrade to Vista SP2 and receive further support. Microsoft released SP2 for Vista in May of 2009.

F.E.A.R. 3 Gameplay Performance Review - tech
(hx) 11:13 AM CEST - Jul,06 2011 - Post a comment
HardOCP's gameplay evaluation features six different video cards, the GeForce GTX 560Ti, GTX 570 and a GTX 580 on the NVIDIA side and the Radeon HD 6870, HD 6950 and HD 6970 from AMD. Here's a taster:
2560x1600 :
Best Performer :
At 2560x1600, the AMD Radeon HD 6970 gave us the highest framerates, but did not always provide a better experience than its slower competition.
Best Value :
The AMD Radeon HD 6950 turned in a great performance at 2560x1600, and due to a potential issue with the way 4X AA is implemented in F.3.A.R., it was able to provide an identical gameplay experience as video cards costing more money.

1920x1200 :
Best Performer :
At 1920x1200, the AMD Radeon HD 6950 gave us the fastest performance with the highest available settings.
Best Value :
On the other hand, the Radeon HD 6870 gave us a comparable experience and costs a lot less.

1680x1050 :
Best Performer:
At 1680x1050, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti edged out the AMD Radeon HD 6870 for the raw performance win.
Best Value:
Unfortunately for the GTX 560 Ti, the AMD Radeon HD 6870 is a lot less expensive and performs almost on par with it.

For gamers with 30inch monitors, the AMD Radeon HD 6970 is a great choice
. You can get a MSI model at Newegg for $339.99. A $20 mail-in rebate brings that cost down to $319.99 plus shipping. Our 21-27inch 1080p or 1920x1200 gamers have fewer pixels to push, so they don't need quite as much power. A Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 can be had for $249.99 after a rebate. Gamers with still smaller displays, around 20inch running at 1680x1050, have some great options too. A PowerColor Radeon HD 6870 is available for $189.99 plus shipping. Again, a mail-in rebate for $10 brings that down to $179.99. At this resolution, NVIDIA fans may prefer the GeForce GTX 560 Ti. It performed on par with the Radeon HD 6870 in every test we conducted. You can buy a EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti for $239.99, with yet another mail-in rebate bringing the price down by $20 to $219.99 plus shipping.

Wii U Powered by the CPU Found in IBM's Watson - tech
(hx) 12:00 PM CEST - Jun,08 2011 - Post a comment
After doing a little digging, the folks over at Engadget revealed that the Wii U will be powered by the same chip used in IBM's Watson, the machine used to best a couple of Jeopardy champions earlier this year.
Nintendo's new console, the Wii U, was finally unveiled to the world today at E3 2011, and we got a glimpse of its graphical prowess at the company's keynote. Details were scarce about the IBM silicon Nintendo's new HD powerhouse was packing, but we did some digging to get a little more info. IBM tells us that within the Wii U there's a 45nm custom chip with "a lot" of embedded DRAM (shown above). It's a silicon on insulator design and packs the same processor technology found in Watson, the supercomputer that bested a couple of meatbags on Jeopardy awhile back. Unfortunately, IBM wouldn't give us the chip's clock speeds, but if it's good enough to smoke Ken Jennings on national TV, we imagine it'll do alright against its competition from Sony and Microsoft.

  • Nvidia announces GeForce GTX 560M for gaming laptops - Nvidia has taken the wraps off its latest high-end graphics chips for notebooks at Computex. The new GeForce GTX 560M brings a welcome performance boost from the GTX 460M as well as improved battery life thanks to the company's Optimus graphics switching technology. Specs include 192 CUDA cores, with 1550MHz shader frequency, a 775MHz graphics clock, and 1250MHz memory frequency with either 1.5GB or 3GB of GDDR5 memory and a 192-bit bus. According to the company the new GTX 560M should enable the latest games to run at playable frame rates on a 1080p screen with maximum detail, minus antialiasing. So far Asus , MSI, Alienware, Toshiba and Clevo have all committed to new notebooks packing the new graphics processor, though as usual specific implementations are up to each manufacturer and it seems only Toshiba's Qosmio and Alienware's M17x will offer Optimus support.

This is Windows 8 (video) - tech
(hx) 10:20 AM CEST - Jun,02 2011 - Post a comment / read (13)
Microsoft has revealed details about Windows 8.
As we know already, Windows 8 will be ARM-based as opposed to the traditional x64 architecture. Now we have more details about specifically how Windows 8 will look, feel, and behave:

- For those familiar with Windows Phone 7, Windows 8 will feel familiar. Windows 8 highly incorporates the "tiles" design of Windows Phone 7.
- Windows 8 will support two types of apps/programs. The first type of programs supported on Windows 8 are the traditional PC programs, such as the ones that run on Windows 7. In other words, non-touch based programs. The second type of programs supported on Windows 8 are mobile-like programs (i.e. touch based and open full screen) written in HTML5 and Javascript. Internet Explorer 10, which will be available in Windows 8, has already been designed to be a mobile-like program.
- There will be support for hardware keyboards and mice (usable in both types of programs mentioned above), but there will be plenty of virtual keyboards available to use - including different keyboards depending on the orientation of your device - and support for touch gestures for navigation.
- There will be an app store for Windows 8.
- Windows 8 will run on laptops, desktops, and tablets.
- Windows 8 will "use less resources" than Windows 7. There is still a bit of confusion about if Windows 8 will only work on ARM CPUs or if it will also work on traditional CPUs. No one really knows.

  • Intel upgrades 320 Series SSD warranty to five years - Intel announced that it would extend the limited warranty for its 320 Series solid-state drives from three years to five. The company said it is 'confident in the enhanced reliability features' of its third-generation SSDs and the updated policy applies to all 320 Series drives, including those that have already been purchased by consumers.
  • Zotac Geforce GTX 550 TI Tested - Despite being outperformed by both Radeon 6790 and 6850 - the Geforce GTX 550 TI AMP! proved to be very good graphics card. With the price-tag of 140 euros it provides nice price/performance ratio with very reasonable noise levels. Unlike most radeons these days the GTX 550TI is very short card and will most likely fit in most HTPC cases too.
  • Z68 Express Roundup: Three Motherboards Do Battle Around $200 - So who wins? The P8Z68-V Pro has the best overall performance, but the difference between it and the Z68 Extreme4 is less than 1%. The average difference is too small to show up on the chart, and ASRock had better efficiency. For $10 less, ASRock adds a PCIe bridge to its Z68 Extreme4. Anyone who really wants a x4 slot should view this as mandatory.

Hackers have circumvented this restriction by making the app think you are using one of the supported devices. There some unsupported devices which seem to work fine with the app, but others have serious problems, including crashes or no video/sound. A detailed guide has been posted on Reddit for those who want to give this a try (your Android device needs to be rooted) at their own risk, of course.

Brink GPU & CPU Performance Test - tech
(hx) 11:13 PM CEST - May,19 2011 - Post a comment / read (2)
The chaps over at Techspot take a look at how Brink performs on a dozen current and previous-generation GPUs priced from $100 to $700:
At the relatively low resolution of 1280x800 Brink is very hardware-friendly. Affordable $110 graphics cards such as the Radeon HD 6750 and GeForce GTS 450 provide playable performance with maximum visual settings enabled.

In fact, that remains somewhat true as you scale up to a more desirable resolution such as 1680x1050. You shouldn't have to splurge on a flagship single-GPU card like the GeForce GTX 580 to play Brink with most of its eye-candy enabled. The Radeon HD 6790 and GeForce GTX 460 averaged around 50fps.

Because Brink is largely GPU-dependent, you shouldn't need to worry much about your processor either. Most entry-level parts were capable of delivering between 84 and 94fps. That's not half bad considering the beefier Core i5 and i7 processors maxed out at ~104fps.

Nvidia launches mainstream GeForce GTX 560 card - tech
(hx) 11:07 AM CEST - May,18 2011 - Post a comment / read (1)
Nvidia launched its GeForce GTX 560 Ti graphics card recently but for people who don't have $250 or so to buy a new graphics card, Nvidia has a new product that might be more to your liking. The company announced today that it has launched its GeForce GTX 560 card which is priced at about $199. The card is available for sale now via a number of different third party graphics card makers.
OCC: The Gigabyte GTX 560 OC provided a solid gaming experience while being affordable. The whole time it was in use, the card was quiet. The 100mm fans were inaudible compared to the case fans even when run at full speed of ~2000 RPM. Overclocking results weren't ground breaking but the card did do well. Core speed was already overclocked 20 MHz from factory to 830 MHz and it was able to operate stable at 910 MHz. The memory was able to overclock from 1002 MHz to 1125 MHz stable as well. Temperatures were some of the best recorded with help from the WindForce heat sink! Power consumption numbers were some of the lowest out of the cards tested thanks to NVIDIA's design and Gigabyte's Ultra Durable VGA components. I couldn't discern any choke squeal so the Ultra Durable ferrite chokes definitely did their job well. With some voltage modification, this card should easily have a bit more headroom. The Gigabyte Easy Boost software is handy with overclocking and fan speed control and BIOS tools. Users can backup and flash their BIOS with the program with the push of a button! The only con for this card would be the overclocking capability in comparison to the cooling. The card had plenty of overclocking room thermally but was held back by a lack of voltage. Overclocking is a gamble and this note shouldn't be held against the card considering it did decently. The card itself wasn't at fault as it was designed for quiet stability and not designed for hardcore overclocking. The overclock results were approximately 11% gain on the core and 12% on the memory. The card performed very well but until stocks of the GTX 460 run out, it will be interesting to see how it sells being that the GTX 460 is considerably cheaper. Performance was great and everything worked perfectly so if the price is right this card makes a great choice!

TechReport:
Based on our tests, it's pretty clear that the GTX 560 has a raw performance edge over the competition from AMD overall. However, that performance advantage isn't huge, and the Asus Radeon HD 6870 TOP has the distinction of being uncannily quiet for a $200 graphics card. Oh, sure, it draws a little more power at idle, but that doesn't seem to affect noise levels. As icing on the cake, the Radeon can drive as many as six displays. In the other corner, the GeForce GTX 560 TOP is faster, nearly as quiet, and costs only $20 more. It has company, too. MSI's GeForce GTX 560 Frozr II is almost as quick, only a little bit louder, and $10 cheaper. While neither card has hexa-display support, both let you enjoy Nvidia-specific perks like PhysX and GeForce 3D Vision. Some users like those extras, while others couldn't care less. You can make up your own mind on that front.

InsideHW:
GeForce GTX560 fits the current market gamma perfectly, and we believe that it's destined to be a popular model. The fact that manufacturers can toy around with the clocks whichever way they want to promises many high-performance overclocked models from reputed brands. However, pay attention, as this is a double-edged sword - certain manufacturers may try to sell less potent chips which will be significantly downclocked compared to other cards on the market, trying to get rid of them by selling them to ill-informed buyers. This is the main reason why we believe NVIDIA should have at least set the lower margin for this GPU, which would protect their customers better, while this move gives the advantage to the manufacturers. Either way, GeForce GTX560 as such is an excellent product, and as far as ASUS' own rendition is concerned, a phenomenal one.
