The first one was to build a 3-D qubit made from superconducting, microfabricated silicon. The main advantage here is that the equipment and know-how necessary to create this technology already exists, nothing new has to be invented, thanks to developments made by Yale researchers (for which Steffen expressed a deep admiration). Using this approach, they managed to maintain coherence for 95 microseconds – 'But you could round that to 100 for the piece if you want,' Steffen joked.

Real-Time Dynamic Destruction Physics Demo - tech
(hx) 04:16 PM CET - Mar,13 2012 - Post a comment
In typical real-time destruction scenarios, objects are turned into pre-fractured pieces. This is fast but the pattern does not depend on the impact location. Also, the number of times a piece can be fractured is limited.

In this video we show our new destruction prototype. Here, objects are fractured on the fly. There is no limit of how many times pieces can be fractured. Also, the fracture pattern depends on the impact location.

The original objects as well as the pieces are allowed to be non-convex which is an additional challenge. To simulate the massive amount of rigid bodies we use GRBs - GPU accelerated rigid boides. The scene runs above 40 fps until the end including rendering on an nvidia GeForce GTX 480.

Kinect Grocery Cart - tech
(hx) 07:30 PM CET - Mar,07 2012 - Post a comment
The Smarter Cart uses a Kinect sensor synced with a Windows 8 tablet to control its motion, but with one key difference. Instead of having someone actively directing where the device moves, the cart monitors the user and follows them like a lost puppy as they move about the store and pick out their items. The Kinect's voice recognition is also implemented this time around, so a user can ask the cart for more information - like where specific items are located in the store - or tell it when they are done shopping. The cart can also track the items placed in it by scanning their bar codes, match them to a pre-made shopping list, and give the total cost of all the items in the basket. It can even detect if the wrong type of item is grabbed and verbally inform the shopper. In a demonstration, a rep placed a box of spaghetti in the cart and was instantly told that it was not gluten-free, which has been specified on the shopping list.

Microsoft’s new Windows 8 logo looks like it was created in MS Paint
  • Best Graphics Cards For The Money: February 2012 - The end of January saw AMD launch its Radeon HD 7950, a de-tuned Radeon HD 7970 able to match pace with Nvidia's GeForce GTX 580. Its Tahiti Pro GPU is a cut-back version of the Radeon HD 7970's Tahiti XT, reduced from 2048 to 1792 shader cores and 128 to 112 texture units. Meanwhile, the core clock drops to 800 MHz, while the card's 3 GB of GDDR5 memory operates at 1250 MHz. Fortunately, the card retains its 384-bit memory bus and complete back-end configuration (with 32 ROPs). As a result, performance is pretty impressive at AMD's $450 estimated price. We've already seen GeForce GTX 580s as low as $450, after rebates. So, we might be at the verge of a price war in the high-end space.
  • Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200RPM HD Tested - The Barracuda 3TB displayed a few splashes of read-speed brilliance and matched up decently with the other similarly-spec'd drives in our tests. Taken as a whole, the differences between the three best performers were relatively small, although the trio beat out the Western Digital drives in our tests. However, one of those three drives is an older-generation Seagate Barracuda XT; the current Barracuda XT line is being phased out and will be reborn as a series of hybrid drives, so if you want a standard Seagate HDD with these features, the newer Barracuda 3TB is the way to go.
  • Microsoft reimagined logo for Windows 8 is official - Microsoft has revealed a redesigned logo for Windows 8 in a recent post on the company’s official Windows team blog. Redmond’s new operating system logo borrows heavily from the original Windows logo that was introduced alongside Windows 1.0 in 1985.
  • Philips 2012 TV line-up to offer dual-view gaming - The feature will allow two players to see different images on the same display, effectively rendering current 'split-screen gaming' a thing of the past.
  • Apple Blocks Siri On Jailbroken Non-iPhone 4S Devices - Just in case you missed a few earlier reports, the jailbreaking crowd found it quite hard to make Siri available on older iDevices since the feature has to establish a connection with Apple's servers. It was the release of a revised version of iOS 5.0.1 that allowed jailbreakers access to the files of Siri. You can guess what happened next. Spire, the Siri porting tool, arrived for all jailbroken iDevices which run iOS 5. The new update that Apple has released disables this tool.
  • Clik This proof of concept app - It's available on the Android App store and iTunes.

TechNews - Engineers boost CPU/GPU speed 21% - tech
(hx) 08:00 PM CET - Feb,10 2012 - Post a comment / read (4)
  • Engineers boost CPU/GPU speed 21%, could be a glimpse of AMD's future - North Carolina State University researchers have discovered a method of boosting processing performance by more than 21%. Although many processing designs by Intel, AMD and ARM house CPU and GPU cores in the same package, the components still function mostly independently.
  • Motherboard prices expected to increase 10% by next quarter - Thanks to increasing world market prices of copper, the major retail motherboard manufacturers are looking at increasing their motherboard prices by about 10 percent or so come April. This is bad news for Intel, as this will end up coinciding with Intel's launch of its Ivy Bridge processors and the new 7-series chipsets.
  • Corsair Force Series 3 and Force Series GT SSD Tested - Corsair has met a good mark with their Force Series 3 and Force Series GT offerings. While the performance is inline with other models sporting the stock SandForce firmware, where they win folks over is with the agressive pricing and broad range of capacity available across both product lines. Cost/GB figures approaching the $1/GB mark is definitely something we want to see for SSD adoption to improve, and Corsair is absolutely delivering in that respect.
  • Intel 520 Series 240GB Review - Any which way you cut it, the Intel 520 series drives deliver performance that allows it to fit right into the upper crust of the Sandforce-equipped comparison field. In many of the tests the drive was in the top two or three drives tested and seemed to excel in the write testing. In the ATTO testing the drive easily reached its rated speeds of up to 550MB/s reads and 520MB/s write. The Sandforce controller and low cost 25nm NAND have proven to be an excellent combination so far. Long term reliability has been a concern with the lower total life cycles of the cells in the NAND. Intel worked closely with LSI, who now owns Sandforce, to develop a firmware that delivered long-term reliability and has confidence enough in the product and process that they offer the 520 series drives with a 5 year warranty. Something that brings a little piece of mind to the thought of spending just over $500 for a 240GB drive.
  • Windows 8 ARM to include Office 15 apps - Microsoft used its official Windows 8 blog site to announce that the ARM port of Windows 8 is still planned to be released at the same time as the x86 version of the PC operating system. The biggest announcement today as far as Windows on ARM (WOA) is concerned is that the next version of Microsoft Office will be included in all Windows 8 ARM ports.
  • Windows 8 UI is dropping the 'Start' button - Microsoft has removed the 'Start' menu button from its upcoming Windows 8 operating system, according to a consumer preview released earlier this week. The leaked screenshot, obtained by PCbeta, reveal that Microsoft has removed the button. This was probably done as part of Microsoft's Metro-style UI effort to make the user interface more intuitive across multiple devices. While the Start button may be gone, the button's core functionality will be retained using a 'hot corner'. The hot corner, which you activate by either touching or mousing over one of the screen's four corners, will supposedly activate a start-style menu screen when the operating system is both desktop and Metro UI mode. The Live Bar, which allows you to pin frequently used programs to, will continue being used in Windows 8, according to the report.
  • Dropbox Handing Out 5GB Storage with Android Beta App - I really like my Dropbox. It's just so convenient having my files sync'd up to the cloud. It's great to have a public folder for sharing larger files with friends and colleagues too. Now, the Dropbox Android app has been updated to a new beta version and guess what? They'll give you 5GB free for trying. The main reason for the beta is to work out the kinks, but you need users to encounter those kinks for you to fix them. That's why they're encouraging more people to get the new Android app. Note: You don't get the 5GB of cloud storage right from the get-go. Instead, you get 500MB on the first sync. After that, you need to automatically upload additional chunks of 500MB to grow your account in 500MB increments.

The German court is also preparing to hear new suits and countersuits between Apple and Samsung. Apple vs. HTC suits are also pending. The situation in Germany has devolved under a bewildering mess, but as far as the available information indicates, the only thing that remains officially banned at this point is the original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 -- although the iCloud/MobileMe could soon join it.

55-inch LED TV for just S$1,000? - tech
(hx) 09:43 AM CET - Jan,25 2012 - Post a comment / read (15)
Like the idea of 55-inch LED TV at close to S$1K? Or 42-inch 3D LED TV for less than S$500? Well, it is coming..!
Few key trends - first, the price of 42 inch LED backlight TV sets, including those with 120/240 Hz refresh and 3-D stereoscopic capability, has now dropped so close to the 32-inch TV set level that, unless you really have no space at home for one, it makes no sense to choose 32-inch over 42-inch. The prices manufacturers quote for 100 plus units now, for a 42-inch FullHD LED TV, are less than US$ 300, and just another 20 - 40 bucks more if you want 3-D. In fact, one vendor quoted just US$ 259 for a non-3D FullHD LED 42-inch set. Once you could the export and GST, plus extra sample charge, you could have one at your home for some S$ 500, I guess - and I'm talking of good quality panels with zero dead pixels (including Shenzhen's own 8.5G panel factory now on line), and reasonably thin casing margins around the panel, meaning not a too bulky TV.

Then, even more interestingly, the very large panels - up to 55 inch - got progressively cheaper, and with them the prices of large 50-inch and 55-inch sets. Now, you can get a 55-inch FullHD LED TV, non 3-D, for around US$ 780 if buying, say, 20 units. Add 3-D functionality, again, for a few bucks. If you add the sample charges and taxes, it's still less than S$ 1,200 - just figure out the way to carry it here, of course

OnLive Brings Console-level Gaming To Google TV - tech
(hx) 10:50 AM CET - Jan,12 2012 - Post a comment / read (1)
Google has announced that it will add support for OnLive's streaming PC game service to devices that have the Google TV software, starting with the OnLive Viewer app.
Download the OnLive Viewer app, fire it up and check out my favorite place, the Arena. What you'll see are gamers around the world playing top-tier videogames live, some of them approaching the visual realism of live action, and before long, you might even think you are watching a movie. Cheer (click thumbs-up) if you like what you see, and that cheer might appear on the screen of a gamer on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Try friending and striking up some chat. And, definitely watch some Brag Clip videos, showing the best (and worst!) of OnLive gaming, with the most jaw-dropping and most hilarious moments captured from live gameplay.

As we do with most new platforms, OnLive is starting out with a Viewer on Google TV, so for now, you can just watch and use OnLive social features. But hang in there, OnLive is working closely with Google to enable full gameplay with OnLive gamers from around the world on Google TV. And more Google TV devices are coming, with OnLive built right in.

  • New Acer ultrabook touted as world's thinnest - The Aspire S5 measures only 0.59inch at its thickest point. That's pretty thin. Asus' sleek and slim Zenbook UX31 measures 0.11inch at the front and 0.71inch at the back, and the 13inch MacBook Air is a slightly skinnier 0.11-0.68inch. Acer's new baby doesn't have a razor-thin, tapered front edge like its rivals, but it is indeed thinner at its thickest point.

Lego 2.0? You Can Build Simple Robots! - tech
(hx) 11:17 AM CET - Jan,08 2012 - Post a comment
The Cubelets are divided into three different types-action (outputs), sense (inputs), think (logic)-with various names like 'battery,' 'blocker,' 'temperature,' and 'distance.' By learning what each one does and clipping them together in a variety of ways, kids can build robots with different functionalities that are reactive to light, sound, and temperature, and can even drive about. Before you get too excited though, the $160.00 price tag for a set of eight might dissuade :-(

Neverthless, it's pretty elegant the way he has the self-contained electronics to correctly figure out what resources the blocks are plugged into. But on the other hand - it's too basic a functionality to be more than a novelty for little kids or a talking piece on a coffee table. It needs a bit of versatility with it's simplicity -- like a way to 'tune' each piece like Lego Mindstorm. Something as simple as having behaviors -- perhaps as little geometric shaped pins that could be added to each block, so that you could have a bit more intelligent programmability without needing a programming language. And it also needs a remote control :-) And..BETTER PRICE OF COURSE!!!

MS Bringing XBL Games To iPhone and Android - tech
(hx) 08:31 PM CET - Jan,07 2012 - Post a comment
In a blow to Windows Phone 7, Microsoft will soon build apps that let iOS and Android users play its wildly popular Xbox Live games, a developer familiar with Microsoft's plans confirmed. Looks like Microsoft is getting smarter (or rather desperate?) in its old age :-)
Microsoft's Xbox plans were first reported by LiveSide who spotted a job posting on the Microsoft careers site.

The job is for developers with iOS and Android experience. In itself, that doesn't say much, points out Neowin, as Microsoft already launched a new My Xbox LIVE app for iOS devices last month, alongside the launch of an Xbox Companion app for Windows Phone. The iOS app doesn't let you play games on your iPhone or iPad, although it does let you send messages to Live buddies, change your avatar, or track your achievements.

However, the job posting indicates that Microsoft's plans to bring Live games to iOS and Android. It says:

"As the team inside IEB (Interactive Entertainment Business) dedicated to mobile experiences, we work closely with console software team and Xbox LIVE services team to bring the latest and greatest gaming and entertainment experience to mobile platforms including Windows Phone, iOS and other mobile platforms."
