AMD Catalyst 12.8 is Now Available - tech
(hx) 04:21 AM CEST - Aug,17 2012 - Post a comment
AMD has officially released Catalyst 12.8, bringing official support for Windows 8 and DirectX 11.1 to the company's products for the first time. For those still on Windows 7, an upgrade may still be worthwhile: the upgrade fixes a raft of bugs in previous driver releases, including the correct restoration of underscan and overscan settings on reboot, fixes for crashing in Crysis Warhead, a solution for the green-hue problem with Radeon HD 7000 series boards in dual graphics mode, and additional fixes for other titles including Call of Duty: Black Ops, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Dirt Showdown, Max Payne 3 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
Performance highlights of 12.8 vs 12.6:
Up to 25% in Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
Up to 3% in Battlefield 3
Up to 6% in Batman: Arkham City
Up to 3% in Dues Ex: Human Revolution
Up to 6% in Crysis 2
Up to 15% in Total War: Shogun
Up to 8% in Crysis Warhead
Up to 5% in Just Cause 2
Up to 10% in Dirt 3

TechNews - Best Graphics Cards For The Money - tech
(hx) 04:57 AM CEST - Aug,13 2012 - Post a comment / read (2)
Paul Steed, best known for his 3D modeling work at id software working on classics like Quake and Wing Commander, has passed away unexpectedly. Steed had an incredibly diverse career. He is perhaps best known for his 3D modeling work, but he was also an author, a console developer, a game developer with companies like Electronic Arts and id, a keynote speaker at the 2008 Game Developer's Conference, and he also ran his own game development company, Exigent. God bless and comfort his family during this tragic time. He will surely be missed, not just for his astounding contributions he has made in the world of gaming, but more so for the man he was to those who loved him.
  • Best Graphics Cards For The Money: August 2012 -  After more than a month missing in action, the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition is finally available. We've seen a few price adjustments recently, but the real news is the rumored Radeon HD 7990, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, and GeForce GTX 650.
  • The Intel SSD 910 Review - From a performance perspective, the Intel SSD 910 is an absolute beast.  Pricing is also extremely competitive with other high-end enterprise PCIe offerings. Intel comes in at $5/GB for its top of the line enterprise SSD, despite the 710 being introduced at over $6 per GB. If you really want to get nostalgic, the old X25-E launched at over $15/GB. The cost per GB is much lower if you take into account how much NAND Intel is actually putting on board the 910. With 56 x 32GB 25nm MLC-HET die on a single 800GB 910, you're talking about around $2.23 per GB.
  • The Intel SSD 330 Review (60GB, 120GB, 180GB) - The biggest problem with Intel's SSD 330 really stems from the limitations of its SandForce controller. Performance with incompressible (or software encrypted) data is hardly competitive. As an unencrypted OS/application drive the 330 is great, but if you're planning on using software encryption or will be primarily storing photos, videos and music you'll want to opt for a drive based on a different controller technology. In the end it's good to see Intel playing aggressively on price. The 330 is likely one of the best SandForce drives on the market, and not having to pay a premium for it is pretty awesome.
  • CyberLink: Thanks for No DVD Playback in Windows 8 - Microsoft's decision to not support DVD playback in the Windows 8 Media Player has generally not been very well received by prospective customers. There is at least one exception to Microsoft's decision, a software company that is happy for the change and turned it into a money making opportunity. Taiwan-based company CyberLink claims it has secured deals with a number of PC makers to have three of its software products pre-installed on Windows 8 devices.
  • Microsoft talks about converting PDF files to Word files in Word - The goal of PDF Reflow is to convert PDF content into Word documents that contain the original layout intent and that flow correctly across pages when you edit or read. In other words, when you convert a PDF in Word, the elements in the document should act as if you created them in Word. A list from a PDF, for instance, will act just like any other list in Word: hit Enter at the end of a bulleted paragraph and a new bullet will be created.
  • New Virus Linked To Stuxnet Found - Kaspersky Lab ZAO said that the newly-discovered virus shared similarities in terms of structure and operation with Flame, a program aimed at vacuuming information from target computers. Flame in turn shared similarities with Stuxnet, a program experts believe was designed to sabotage Iran's disputed nuclear program.
  • uTorrent becomes ad-supported torrent client - The creator of the popular torrent client uTorrent has announced that the upcoming release of uTorrent will have 'in-client offers.' In other words, people will have to deal with ads when running uTorrent.  Users who pay for the uTorrent Plus version won't have to put up with the ads, but that will cost USD $24.95.

Using various computer-programming languages, Brittany Wenger created a cloud-based artificial neural network that can assess tissue samples for signs of breast cancer.
  • Researchers Develop Soft Meshworm Robot with Earthworm-Like Movement - The Meshworm robot is able to move along nearly any surface the same way that a worm does; it scrunches up its body, then it extends it. This crawling motion is referred to as peristalsis and while it may not be very fast, it does allow it to navigate through tough terrain where wheels or legs may not work.

  • Red Dawn Trailer 2012 - A city in Washington state awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky - shockingly, the U.S. has been invaded and their hometown is the initial target. Quickly and without warning, the citizens find themselves prisoners and their town under enemy occupation. Determined to fight back, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods, training and reorganizing themselves into a guerilla group of fighters. Google to push down copyright violators - tech
(hx) 04:33 AM CEST - Aug,12 2012 - Post a comment / read (4)
In May, Google announced that it was adding a new page on its Transparency Report site called Copyright Removal Requests. The page showed which companies were asking Google to remove search results for certain websites. Now it looks like Google is doing more to try to stop those websites from appearing in its search results.
We aim to provide a great experience for our users and have developed over 200 signals to ensure our search algorithms deliver the best possible results. Starting next week, we will begin taking into account a new signal in our rankings: the number of valid copyright removal notices we receive for any given site. Sites with high numbers of removal notices may appear lower in our results. This ranking change should help users find legitimate, quality sources of content more easily—whether it's a song previewed on NPR's music website, a TV show on Hulu or new music streamed from Spotify.

Since we re-booted our copyright removals over two years ago, we've been given much more data by copyright owners about infringing content online. In fact, we're now receiving and processing more copyright removal notices every day than we did in all of 2009—more than 4.3 million URLs in the last 30 days alone. We will now be using this data as a signal in our search rankings.

Only copyright holders know if something is authorized, and only courts can decide if a copyright has been infringed; Google cannot determine whether a particular webpage does or does not violate copyright law. So while this new signal will influence the ranking of some search results, we won't be removing any pages from search results unless we receive a valid copyright removal notice from the rights owner. And we'll continue to provide "counter-notice" tools so that those who believe their content has been wrongly removed can get it reinstated. We'll also continue to be transparent about copyright removals.

Oculus Rift: Step out of Reality and Into the Game - tech
(hx) 04:00 AM CEST - Aug,05 2012 - Post a comment / read (1)
The latest Kickstarter-funded project to cause a stir online is the Oculus Rift. Oculus is a virtual reality headset that's designed to offer unparalleled visual quality, low-latency performance, and drive new levels of game/video immersion. The product page is a veritable Who's Who of the gaming world, with John Carmack calling it "the best VR demo probably the world has ever seen," and Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski declaring that his company wants the Unreal engine to be compatible with the Rift. The technical specifications are equally impressive. The Rift provides a 110-degree field of vision and is capable of tracking head movement far more smoothly than previous efforts in this field. The developer kit (yours for just $300) includes a copy of Doom III: BFG, which has been ported to run on the new headset, the Rift SDK, and complete access to the company's nascent Development Center. Geforce 660 Ti Review - tech
(hx) 04:49 PM CEST - Aug,01 2012 - Post a comment
Tweak Town has posted the first review of Nvidia's new Geforce 660 Ti. Here's an excerpt:
It's hard to fault NVIDIA's upcoming GEFORCE GTX 660 Ti and for good reason. You're talking about a video card that is rumored to hit at the mid-$200 range yet performs like a video card priced $100 more. In this case we're talking about the HD 7950 specifically. You could argue that it can be compared against the more expensive HD 7970 at times, too.

On the flaws side of things, the GTX 660 Ti is plagued with the same issue as all NVIDIA video cards. As soon as we move to 2560 x 1600, the lead it had, generally disappears. We're not sure if AMD is just really good at handling the higher resolution or NVIDIA is just not great at it. At this price point, though, you wouldn't expect a video card to handle 2560 x 1600; often it does, though.

There are also a few areas we haven't tested today like power, noise and heat. Due to reasons mentioned in the introduction, we've chosen to avoid those particular tests today, as they could help identify the supplier of the video card. Of course we'll be looking at all these numbers when we start to test retail based models that are set to arrive later this week. Out of respect to those partners, though, we won't be showing off the card until it officially launches later in the month and while we've got this card for roughly just another 24 hours before it has to go back to a certain companies R&D lab, we will be taking the time to see how the overclocking side of things go.

It's clear that NVIDIA had all intensions of shaking things up with this generation. Sure, they came out later then they would've hoped and NVIDIA has left this mid-$200 price bracket empty for what I feel is too long, but they're ready to hit it, and it seems like they're going to hit it extremely hard.

TechNews - Intel, Nvidia top Steam Hardware Survey - tech
(hx) 10:20 PM CEST - Jul,26 2012 - Post a comment / read (4)
  • Intel, Nvidia top Steam Hardware Survey - Unsurprisingly, Intel dominates, with a 72% slice of the pie. Almost exactly half of Steam users have dual-core CPUs, while 38% are running quads. The number of single-core users (7.5%) is more than double the number with greater than four cores. On the graphics front, 47% of Steam users are running an Nvidia GPU. 36% have a Radeon under the hood, and 11% are stuck with Intel integrated graphics. The remaining 6% are filed under an "other" category that seems to have popped up in the last four months or so. I wonder if Virtu configurations or beta graphics drivers could be responsible for some of that total.
  • Hardware Accelerating Everything: Windows 8 Graphics - There is an interesting article on the Building Windows 8 blog that outlines the new acceleration improvements in Windows 8. The engineering team pit Windows 8 versus Windows 7 to give you an idea just how much of a difference hardware acceleration makes.
  • Xbox Live fall 2012 update beta registration starts - Microsoft has started taking sign ups for Xbox Live users to beta test the upcoming major fall 2012 update for the Xbox 360's online service, which will add Internet Explorer to Xbox Live
  • Mozilla Releases Firefox 15 Beta - Mozilla has already put the beta for the next release, Firefox 15, out for downloading. The biggest draw to participate in an early beta would be to test out the improvements in preventing memory leaks, which FF15 addresses nicely along with a few more timely improvements.
  • YouTube Now Offers Face Blurring - YouTube has added a new face blurring feature that allows you to blurs faces in your videos automatically.
  • Comcast confirms new 305 Mbps Internet speed service - In a press release, Comcast said the 305 Mbps speed would be offered to markets in the northeastern portion of the US under the name Xfinity Platinum Internet. Upload speeds for this new tier will be 65 Mbps. That would make it just slightly faster than Verizon's recently launched upper limit of 300 Mbps for downloads and up to 65 Mbps for uploads for its FiOS service. While pricing for the new Comcast service was not announced in the press release, Multichannelnews.com reports that it will cost $299.95 per month. In addition, Comcast said:" ... Xfinity Blast! customers will now get download speeds of up to 50 Mbps (formerly 25 Mbps), and Extreme 50 customers will now receive speeds of up to 105 Mbps (formerly 50 Mbps)." These new speed increases will come at no additional cost.
  • Google Fiber Announcement Live Stream - Google makes a special announcement about Google Fiber and the next chapter of the Internet.
  • Intel to add Android 4.1 support for its Atom processors - PCWorld.com reports that Intel has promised it is currently porting Android 4.1, also known as Jelly Bean, to the Atom chip. So far, only a few Android-based smartphones and tablets have that chip inside, and none of them are sold in the US. Intel would not say how long it would take to port Android 4.1 to the Atom chip, nor when the Jelly Bean update will be released to Atom-based devices.
  • Can Skype 'wiretap' video calls? - The video calling service Skype recently made a change to how it routes calls. Yawn, right? But here's where it get a little juicier: Hackers and bloggers are saying the changes, which push some of the video calling process onto Skype's own computers instead of onto random machines on the Internet, could help the app spy on users' calls, presumably at the request of a court or government.
  • First Nexus 7 Commercial Hits The Web - The Nexus 7's first video advertisement is all about a father and son camping out in the 'woods' with the WIFI-only Google tablet. While not funny or exciting, it is certainly an advertisement that correctly targets what is likely to be its largest userbase - families.
  • Artificial Jellyfish created from Rat Heart - Biomechanics, tissue engineering and materials science have come a long ways in the last decade, as proven by the recent achievement by the would-be Doctor Frankensteins at Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology. Using the Medusa Jellyfish as their 'model', these genius scientists got to work on taking inanimate silicon and living cardiac muscle cells and transforming them into a strange 'creature' that somewhat looks and moves like a real jellyfish.
  • Electric Plane High Speed Record Set at 202.6 MPH - Chip Yates, the same guy who set the record for the fastest run on an electric motorcycle, has just set the record for the fastest flight in an electric plane. Almost ironically, the two speeds are both right around 200mph. Yates took to the air above the Mojave Desert, reaching a speed of 202.6mph during his 16 minute flight.
  • The V Motion Project - The whole process comes together using a Microsoft Kinect camera and modified software that allows a musician to control Ableton Live using their arms and legs. Normally Ableton is a software program used by Djs to make music and requires a physical interface with knobs and buttons, but the V Motion Project sets you free from that limitation. Can you imagine what something like this could do for the future of performance art and music? While right now its just a unique project, it is a really cool idea with tons of future potential from use by artists, musicians and even perhaps gamers via a Kinect-like game someday.

Nvidia Releases A New Dawn Demo - tech
(hx) 03:01 AM CEST - Jul,25 2012 - Post a comment
Serving as an updated version of an old benchmarking demo released years ago, A New Dawn will put your card through its paces and is targeted for GTX 670's and higher. There are some interesting comparisons between the old demo, Dawn, and the new demo, A New Dawn. The environment went from 7,000 triangles to 4 million. The figure's hair went from 1,700 static strands to 40,000 tessellated strands all physically animated. The old Dawn demo had no shadows, no post processing, and no anti-aliasing.
In A New Dawn, the demo starts not with the main character, but with a sweeping overview of a lush rainforest. Ferns gently sway in the moonlight, vines sprawl across an ancient tree, and budding flowers cast a gentle glow on the surrounding bark. As our character comes into view, we find her swinging on a vine in her new tree home. The tree is rendered to the finest level of detail using DirectX 11 tessellation. At its peak, over four million triangles are used to showcase Dawn's environment.

Another area of dramatic improvement is Dawn's hair. The original Dawn had individual hair strands, but they were few and far between. A mere 1,700 adorned her head and the shader only modeled for specular reflections. The original Dawn also used a rock hard hairspray to ensure her hair never budged a millimeter; all the GPU's horsepower was directed at rendering her character as realistically as possible. New Dawn’s hair is a giant leap forward. Thanks to DirectX 11 tessellation, she has gone from a scant 1,700 strands to 40,000 soft locks of hair. Advanced shading allows her beautiful hair to move out of the jet-black color scheme. While still a brunette, you’ll see her hair gently flowing in the wind, reflecting and transmitting light from the environment.

Because hair is so thin, aliasing is a major problem. Traditional antialiasing doesn't work well here, as a strand is often smaller than a pixel and may not be picked up by any of the four-or-so sample points. To alleviate this problem, A New Dawn has a special hair smoothing shader that inspects each strand and blurs them in the combing direction. The final result looks soft and silky, as if she just jumped out of the shower after an extensive conditioner routine.

Dawn's skin has also received a complete overhaul. Human skin is one of the trickiest materials to simulate. Unlike a concrete object that only absorbs or transmits light, human skin is more akin to a block of jelly; light enters, jiggles around in multiple layers of skin and flesh, and exits in a new direction. The technique used to simulate this complex series of interactions is called sub-surface scattering.

The original Dawn demo used a very simple but effective technique to simulate one aspect of skin shading called rim lighting. It worked by isolating the silhouette of the character and letting light from behind the character bleed through, giving an illusion of translucent skin. This worked well for the silhouette when exposed to strong light, but was less convincing for other portions of the character.

Just yesterday Sony revealed its latest Google TV hardware, a $199 remake of the company's first GTV products. And now today, Vizio took to the wires and announced its first player in the Google TV game, the $99 Co-Star. The Co-Star is a serious contender in this game, too. The product boasts all the Google TV functionality along with additional baked-in apps such as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, iHeartRadio, and for the first time on a Google TV box, OnLive. With OnLive gamers can demo, watch and actually play games through the cloud gaming service. Plus, all this is available for $100 less than Sony charges. The Co-Star ships with a dual-sided Bluetooth remote (OnLive's wireless controllers use Bluetooth) with one side featuring a number pad and touchpad with a QWERTY keypad on the other side. The box also sports 802.11n and USB connectivity options. Vizio hasn't yet detailed the expected ship date yet although pre-orders begin next month.

Logitech Announces New Gaming Mouse - tech

Logitech is today expanding on its gaming peripheral offerings with the announcement of its G600 MMO Gaming Mouse, the latest addition to the company's G-Series line. The mouse has been specifically engineered for use with MMO titles, says Logitech, and features a total of 20 programmable buttons. 12 of those are located on the device's thumb panel (complete with customizable RGB illumination), which is split into two sets of six buttons for "no-look navigation." Three user configuration profiles - two geared towards MMO with the other provided for more general gaming - are stored on the mouse's internal memory, letting users take their preferred settings between different gaming rigs. To help complement its 8200dpi laser sensor, Logitech claims the G600 exhibits a 1 millisecond USB report rate that should make lag a non-issue. Further, it says the device's build was designed with ergonomics in mind to support your hand "through hours of raiding." Priced at $79.99, the G600 is available for preorder now in both black and white color schemes, It's compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

  • Asus Taichi Laptop Has Dual Screens - Do you want more than a glowing piece of produce on the back of your laptop? Asus sure thinks so and it has just introduced the Asus Taichi to the world. It has a second display that covers the entire back cover. This is certainly the first time I've seen this. To be available in 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch variants, the Asus Taichi has a double-sided IPS display so that you can still use the computer when the lid is closed. Presumably, when the lid is open, you do your computing on the regular screen and share your work with everyone else at the coffee shop with the display on the back. The two displays are independent. And yes, the back display is a touchscreen, so you can use it like a tablet when the notebook is closed. There is stylus support and we can only assume that they're going with Windows 8 for this creation. The Taichi is said to be "as light and thin as the Asus Zenbook" and it'll come powered by 3rd-gen Intel Core processors, SSD storage, and dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi.
  • DosPara Prime Note Altair F-5E UltraBook is a bundle of goodness - Say hello to the DosPara Prime Note Altair F-5E UltraBook. The DosPara Prime Note Altair F-5E UltraBook with the i7 processor will cost you 89,900 Yen ($1,152) and with an i5 downgrade the price comes down to 79,800 Yen ($1,022).

  • Joggobot, Your Flying Robot Running Friend (video) - The concept comes by way of Exertion Games Lab at RMIT University in Melbourne. What they've done is taken the standard Parrot AR.Drone quadracopter and loaded it with some specialized software. By doing so, the drone will lock in on the user (you) and follow you around as you go for your run around the neighborhood. It's also designed to help you maintain a certain pace, so if you start to lag behind, it'll fly on ahead and 'motivate' you to keep up. Because you wouldn't want to lose your $300+ toy.
  • C-1 prototype - self-balancing electric motorcycle - Governed to 10 mph (16 km/h) and dual gyros scaled down to 650 lbs of torque, half of what the production version will run at, Lit Motors is on their way to making the C-1 a reality. They hope to bring the new class of vehicle to market with a 120 mph top speed, getting 200 miles per charge on an 8 kWh battery pack all for $16,000 USD.
  • HUBO 2 has articulated hands, can walk 2 km on a charge! - The robot can walk 2 km on a charge, and it looks like it's a little less of a slow poke now, too: KAIST increased its running speed to 4 kph from 3 kph. Additionally, OCZ's Vertex 3 240GB makes a compelling argument at $240 (13% cheaper than the 3K). The business-minded SSDNow V+200 240GB is a little puzzling as it's no more reliable than the HyperX 3K, yet it's much slower and pricier. In fact, it costs the same amount as the standard HyperX.

  • iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak tool released, supports 4S, iPad 3 - Firstly, it almost works for all iOS devices -- almost. Over the past few days, support for newer devices has been continually added and tested. Although the list of supported devices is indeed extensive, Greenpois0n's website explicitly warns users that Absinthe 2.0 will not work for AppleTV 3. Other sources are also reporting that Absinthe has one more problem area: the newly updated iPad 2. Also known as "iPad 2,4", the tablet is a rehashed version of the iPad 2 with a lower price and a new 32nm processor.
Secondly, the target device must be running 5.1.1. Absinthe 2.0 works on this version exclusively so if you're running an older version of iOS, you'll need to update first.
  • First Sample Video Shot with Google's Camera Glasses - The video above is the first sample video captured using the glasses, and is a short 15-second clip showing a first person view of someone doing flips on a trampoline. With current cameras, the only way to achieve this kind of hands-free footage would be to use some kind of (relatively) unwieldy camera strapped to the head or body (e.g. a GoPro mounted on a helmet), but Google Glass would allow people to record this kind of thing by simply wearing a pair of glasses.
  • MIT Students Create Minority Report-Style System Uses iPad - The project website for T(ether) says that the new technology is a spatially aware display that allows people to interact with volumetric data, from the looks of it, the iPad camera is also involved in tracking the data and the user's head position in 3D space.
  • Researchers create first of its kind invisibility cloak array - Scientists from the University of Maryland and nearby Towson University, however, today announced their development of something a little different - little being the key word. They have crammed 25,000 tiny 'invisibility cloaks' onto a gold sheet, which itself only measures 25 millimeters per side. While the resulting biochip array may not allow any young wizards to vanish from sight, it could allow them to identify biological materials.

  • 19-year-old Egyptian Invents Propulsion Device - A 19-year-old Egyptian university student called Aisha Mustafa has invented a propulsion device intended to offer spacecrafts a new method and cheaper means of energy consumption. The propulsion device promises chances of using quantum physics and chemical reactions in artificial satellites, instead of the current radioactive-based jets and ordinary rocket engines. Mustafa's device is based on a scientific mix between quantum physics, space technology, chemical reactions and electrical sciences. Mustafa said the inventions generates energy for space vehicles from electric energy formed by Casimir-polder force, which occurs between separate surfaces and objects in a vacuum and by the zero-point energy considered as the lowest state of energy. The device uses reflective panels for additional force which resembles photovoltaic solar cells.
  • Arkiv Field Modular Backpack Ready for Any Mission - Instead of having multiple bags for multiple purposes, you might want to look into Mission Workshop's Arkiv Field modular backpack. You can add and remove components as needed. The core bag starts at over $200 and then the extra pouches and such average about $60 each. Get this sleeve and that add-on and you're easily into quite the expensive backpack. It does help that it's made in the USA though.
  • Smart Washstand with Android in the Mirror - Seraku plans to integrate these magic mirrors with digital signage. Also, the mirror connects to the internet using a LAN connection and could very well be priced at around 4-5 million yen, a price even Snow White's evil stepmother wouldn't mind paying for a smarter mirror!
  • Nokia Lumia Screen 900 Hammer Test - A Nokia Lumia 900 is put to the test of being hammered on with nails and more.
  • Mad Scientist Creates Real Life Tesla Gun (video) - Inspired by the Tesla Gun in The Five Fists of Science graphic novel, this real life Tesla gun is a handheld spark gap Tesla coil powered by a drill battery. It's about the size of a small rifle and it is able to send out those crazy Tesla sparks at anything within about two feet of its business end. Naturally, it gets pretty hot and heavy pretty quickly, so all the components had to be up for the job. There is definitely some MacGyver-ing going on with the 18V drill battery, plus the ferrite core of a flyback transformer that came by way of an old television set. The primary coil is made fom high voltage wire and high-density polyethylene insulation, while the secondary coil is made from 2.5-inch ABS pipe wrapped in 20-gauge enameled wire. You get the aluminum toroid out the business end.

Delivering the keynote address at the GeForce LAN/Nvidia Game Festival in Shanghai, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announced the company's news video card, the GeForce GTX 690. The GeForce GTX 690 4GB card is based on a pair of GK104 chips, each sporting 1536 CUDA cores, basically identical to the ones used in the GeForce GTX 680 2GB cards released in March. The base clock speed of these parts is slightly lower at 915 MHz but the "typical" Boost clock is set as high as 1019 MHz, pushing it pretty close to the performance of the single GPU solutions. With a total of 3072 processing cores, the GTX 690 will have insane amounts of compute horsepower. Each GPU will have access to 2GB of independent frame buffer still running at 6 Gbps, for a grand total of 4GB on the card. It will be released May 3rd and priced at $1000.

  • Hitachi's 4 TB Hard Drives Take On The 3 TB Competition - Hitachi created the Deskstar 7K4000 with 64 MB cache for the power user segment demanding lots of capacity and a minimum level of performance for workloads like video editing, semi-portable storage solutions, and video surveillance servers. The 4 TB capacity point is several times larger than the biggest SSDs, which incidentally cost several times more than Hitachi's 4 TB hard drives. The Deskstar 5K4000 has 32 MB cache and is designed for data storage where large amounts of information need to be available on file servers, NAS solutions, and near-line applications. Low power consumption is touted as a benefit of the 5K4000 that helps manage heat and cooling in larger deployments, too.

  • IBM Battery 500: A look inside a lithium-air battery - In 2009, IBM researchers set out to develop lithium-air battery technology capable of powering a family-sized electric car for approximately 500 miles (800 km) on a single charge. Instead of using heavy metal oxides, lithium-air batteries borrow oxygen from the air as the vehicle is being driven, creating an air-breathing battery. This results in lighter batteries with high energy density that extend the car's range from a single charge.
