ePSXe (PS1 Emulator) Version 1.80 - tech
(hx) 07:01 AM CET - Dec,05 2012 - Post a comment
For half a year, ePSXe was developed in private. When released on October 14, 2000, ePSXe was a revolution in the PSX emulation scene, boasting higher compatibility and performance than other PlayStation emulators of the time. After ePSXe 1.6.0 was released on August 5, 2003, its development seemed to halt, with rumors claiming that the source code had been lost due to a hard disk failure. However, on April 5, 2008, the developers of ePSXe made a public statement revealing that in the summer of 2007 they had decided to continue development of the emulator, due to encouragement from users. On May 24, 2008, ePSXe version 1.7.0 was released. On August 30, 2012, the developers came back announcing the release of ePSXe for Android, as well as saying that ePSXe for Windows was in testing of version 1.8.0. According to the team, this new version features many fixes to the cd-rom decoder and core that fixed almost 150 games, improved input devices support, on the fly memory card change, fixed changedisc feature, support for SBI subchannel files and for PBP disc images, as well as support for cheat codes.

  • Real Life Holodeck - An 18-node visualization cluster provides the rendering backbone for the Reality Deck facility. Each node features dual Intel Xeon CPUs, each with 6 cores, as well as 48 GB of RAM and 1 TB of local storage. The nodes are interconnected over Infiniband and Gigabit Ethernet. Every machine contains 4 AMD Firepro V9800 GPUs that can drive up to 6 monitors at their native resolution. Effectively, each cluster node can drive up to 24 monitors for almost 90 megapixels of visual space.
  • Dell E2213H 21.5-Inch Full HD Monitor Tested - Dell has released yet another Full HD monitor 'E2213H' into the market. Aimed at business users, this new 21.5-inch LED-backlight monitor (TN panel) provides 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m2 brightness, 5ms response time and 170/160 degree viewing angles, and features DVI-D and mini D-Sub connectors.
  • BFS-Auto: High Speed Book Scanner at over 250 pages/min - BFS-Auto can achieve high-speed and high-definition book digitization at over 250 pages/min using the original media format. This performance is realized by three key points: high-speed fully-automated page flipping, real-time 3D recognition of the flipped pages, and high-accuracy restoration to a flat document image. This system is toward the practical use in 2013.
  • New teardown reveals more specs for the Nintendo Wii U - There are four 4Gb (512MB) Hynix DDR3-1600 devices surrounding the Wii U's MCM (Multi Chip Module). Memory is shared between the CPU and GPU, and if I'm decoding the DRAM part numbers correctly it looks like these are 16-bit devices giving the Wii U a total of 12.8GB/s of peak memory bandwidth. These values may not seem very impressive, especially when compared to the memory speeds of an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.
  • Downgrading from Windows 8 to 7: What you need to know - The good news is you can buy a PC loaded with Windows 8 Pro, try out the new OS, and then downgrade to Windows 7. Unfortunately, however, the road back to Windows 7 can be confusing and full of twists. Hewlett-Packard is typical: It does not support downgrades of consumer-grade Windows 8 PCs to Windows 7. But if you buy a machine loaded with Windows 8 Pro, you can make the jump. HP's policy is based on Microsoft's licensing terms, which support downgrade rights only to new PCs preloaded with Windows 8 Pro, the version of Windows designed for business.  Unfortunately, machines loaded with Windows 8 Pro will demand a pricing premium over similarly spec'd Windows 8 systems - an upgrade to the Pro version of Windows 8 increases system prices anywhere between $35 and $100.
  • Microsoft commits to Surface with Windows RT for at least four years - Although Windows RT was officially released nearly a month ago on Microsoft's Surface and on a handful of PCs from its OEM partners, Microsoft has been quiet about its support policy for RT. Now, the mystery is partly resolved. In an update to its support lifecycle page, Microsoft has officially declared that it will support its initial Surface release for four years. That is, not coincidentally, long enough for a determined undergraduate to get through a conventional university degree program. Normally, Microsoft supports consumer and business versions of Windows for five years (the so-called mainstream support phase) with business versions getting an additional five years of extended support. Because Surface with Windows RT is a hardware-software combo, it plays by a different set of rules, apparently. Microsoft has decreed that its Mainstream Support End Date will be April 11, 2017, which is nearly 4-1/2 years after the product's initial release date. Because this device is considered a consumer device, there's no Extended Support End Date. That means that anyone who buys a Surface with Windows RT can expect security fixes and other updates to Windows RT and the included Office Home and Student 2013 software until at least April 2017. And there's ample precedent for Microsoft to extend that end date.
  • Mozilla Stops Firefox 64-bit Development - Mozilla's engineering manager has requested that developers stop work on Windows 64-bit builds of Firefox.
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy Gets a Major Update- Spybot is probably the most popular free spyware detector and malware remover in the world. According to the Irish company, "The software has been completely rewritten and now has a new user interface as well as improvements in functionality and performance."
  • Police Raid 9-Year-Old Pirate Bay Girl - An anti-piracy company has found itself in the middle of a huge controversy. CIAPC, the company that had The Pirate Bay blocked by ISPs in Finland, tracked an alleged file-sharer and demanded a cash settlement. However, the Internet account holder refused to pay which escalated things to an unprecedented level. In response, this week police raided the home of the 9-year-old suspect and confiscated her Winnie the Pooh laptop.
  • CALTECH breaks data transfer record at 339 Gbps - Physicists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) say they have achieved an astounding data-transfer speed of 339 gigabits per second, which is equivalent to 1 million 2 hour movies per day
  • Cell Service to Expand to 30 NYC Subway Stations Next Year - Transit Wireless announced that it will increase the availability of underground cellular service to a total of 30 New York City subway stations by the end of the first quarter of 2013. Some of the new stations set to receive wireless access include Times Square, Columbus Circle, and Rockefeller Center, all of which are major hubs in New York. So far, AT&T and T-Mobile USA have agreed to the expansion, though Transit Wireless is still holding discussions with Sprint and Verizon Wireless. Transit Wireless has provided service in six underground stations since late 2011. It says progress on the 30-station build out was delayed by the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Transit plans to eventually cover all 277 subway stations throughout New York City with wireless service.
  • Windows Phone 7.8 and the Nokia Lumia 510 demonstrated -  Here's a new video, presumably from Winp.cn, shows the current build of Windows Phone 7.8 (8858) in action. Actually, it’s less action and more of a nice, soothing stroll on some of the more superficial changes coming in the OS update. The new tiles are shown off and we even see the Bing lockscreen wallpaper working (we’re hoping that third-party apps can take advantage of it too like in Windows Phone 8).
  • Blackberry 10 Revealed in Demo Video - Blackberry 10 is expected to come January 30th if all goes according to plan. Devices sporting the new OS will be expected to follow just weeks after.

But I guess when everyone falls off even when they are still ridiculously famous they do the natural thing to get noticed and that's a fucking twerk video - half naked -in the shower - while on tour and I'm not complaining because as much I find Lady Gaga annoying I love seeing girls of all shapes and sizes dance in their underwear for attention even if it is desperation - it's still worth watching.

7 Black Friday deals you should avoid - tech
(hx) 11:36 AM CET - Nov,23 2012 - Post a comment / read (2)
If you plan on braving the post-Thanksgiving shopping madness, make standing in endless lines worth your wait by skipping these products:
1. Toys
Unlike electronics, "most retailers hold off on discounting holiday toys given the expected surge in demand," says Quentin Fottrell at MarketWatch. While many will be discounted on Black Friday, prices don't really bottom out until two weeks before Christmas, says Emily Dovi at DealNews. Resist the temptation of getting your holiday shopping out of the way and hold out till midway through December.

2. The latest digital cameras
The product cycle for top-of-the-line cameras isn't in line with the holiday shopping season. Companies tend to reveal new iterations, like digital SLRs, closer to February, so if you're in the market for a new camera it's best to hold off. If you wait until then, you'll have two options: You can get your hands on the newest model, or pick up that older version you were already eyeing — now at a cheaper price.

3. Winter clothes
It can be tempting to spring for winter jackets and boots after shivering in the cold while waiting in line. But your wallet will actually be better served if you wait until the end of January, when retailers hold clearance sales to make room for their spring collections. Discounts on top brands can save you up to 70 percent.

4. Jewelry and watches
"The worst time to buy these items is the holiday season and Valentine's Day, when demand peaks," says Jill Scheslinger at CBS News. If you want to get your significant other something glitzy for the best bargain possible, hold out for the spring and summer.

5. Name brand TVs
"Hot items" like flat-screens become more expensive the closer you get to Christmas, says the Journal's Mattioli. Prices tend to bottom out in October when demand is lowest. According to Decide Inc., a consumer-price research firm, a Samsung 46-inch "Professional" LCD television was $1,159 in October versus $1,355 on Black Friday. If you really want a heavily discounted TV, stick with off-brands. Unfortunately, to get your hands on these "doorbusters" you'll probably have to be among the first in line — but beware, the sets are oftentimes of questionable quality.

6. Tablets
Tablets "do not seem to be getting sizable Black Friday discounts," says MarketWatch's Fottrell. Staples is selling the 16GB Google Nexus 7 for $199 and a 32GB model for $249, but you can get those same prices directly from Google's online store. Apple's iPads rarely see price reductions, although the company surprised consumers last Black Friday when it offered a $41 to $61 discount on older models.

7. Unbundled game consoles
Skip Xboxes and PlayStations unless they come bundled with premium accessories and two or three game titles, says DealNews' Dovi, which give you "more bang for your buck." Research shows that these special holiday packages typically save you 30 to 40 percent off standard retail prices.

Activation Glitch Makes Windows 8 Free - tech
(hx) 10:08 PM CET - Nov,21 2012 - Post a comment / read (15)
Microsoft's final copy of Windows 8 leaked online back in early August and pirates have been battling to work around Microsoft's activation technology ever since. Early attempts involved the use of third-party Key Management Services (KMS) servers that would activate a copy for 180 days, requiring a re-activation every six months. This work around has allowed Windows 8 pirates to use the operating system free of charge temporarily, but the software maker has now made it even easier to avoid paying for a key.

Microsoft is giving away a Media Center upgrade to Windows 8 Pro users until January 31st, and pirates have discovered that the key provided will fully activate a copy of Windows 8 that was previously temporarily activated through the KMS workaround. The blunder means pirates can download an illegitimate copy of Windows 8, temporarily activate it through KMS and then upgrade it fully to an activated copy of Windows 8 thanks to Microsoft's own Media Center upgrade offer. The Verge has confirmed the procedure works on a test machine and we have reached out to Microsoft for a comment on the method.

Think Geek just released a Portal 2 Sentry Turret USB Desk Defender to scare off any pesky office intruders. The smart turret may not be as tall as the video game counterpart, but it is certainly as talkative. The 7.5 inch tall defender spouts out plenty of dialogue and sound effects from Portal and Portal 2. The arms open up and alerts start going off when someone comes by your desk and triggers the motion sensor. Here's a look at the turret in action:

Can Windows 8 Save Microsoft? - tech
(hx) 12:15 AM CET - Nov,16 2012 - Post a comment / read (15)
SemiAccurate (a blog for some IT consultants) does a lot of 'speculating'. I have found that they actually are semi-accurate and, much of what they predict turns out to be true eventually.
Sooner or later, someone will come along and do a better job than the treacle that Microsoft, offers. Actually that happens all the time. How about, sooner or later, someone will come along and do a better job than the treacle that Microsoft offers, and for some reason, Microsoft won’t be able to crush them like a bug. Then the circled wagons have an alternative. Then the decades of built up enmity have an outlet. Then Microsoft is in trouble.

In such a situation, a company has two choices, both of which are quite stark. They can radically change their ways or they can wither and die. Before you point to Windows 8 and say, “But they are changing and innovating”, hold off a moment, it isn’t what you think.

Microsoft has three product lines that underpin everything, Windows, Windows Server, and Windows Mobile/Phone/WART/whatevertheynameitthisweek. On those, the other moneymakers, Office and Exchange, run exclusively. The apps use protocols that are locked down with dubious methods, and will not run on any competition. The competition is likewise excluded from doing what Microsoft can, either directly like Novell, or by raising the cost to the point of it not being profitable. This is how the wagons are circled, with every iteration, the cost of competing go up, and value of alternatives go up too.

The problem is that if you are locked in with a choice of 100% Microsoft or 0% Microsoft, once someone goes, it isn’t a baby step, they are gone. Once you start using Google Docs and the related suites, you have no need for Office. That means you, or likely your company, saves several hundred dollars a head. No need for Office means no need for Exchange. No need for Exchange means no need for Windows Server. No need for Office means no need for Windows. Once the snowball starts rolling, it picks up speed a frightening pace. And that is where we are. The barriers to exit are now even more potent barriers to entry.

DX11.1 not exclusive to Windows 8 - Sorf Of - tech
(hx) 07:09 PM CET - Nov,15 2012 - Post a comment / read (1)
According to a post on the Games for Windows and the DirectX SDK blog, Microsoft brings - via the Platform Update for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB 2670838) that is included with the Internet Explorer 10 Release Preview for Windows 7 - some DX11.1 features. As the blog suggests, the following features are coming to Windows 7 users:
-ID3D11Device1, ID2D1Factory1, IDWriteFactory1, IDXGIFactory2, IWICImagingFactory2, ID3DUserDefinedAnnotation and related APIs are available
-Improved Direct3D 11 device interoperability via ID3DDeviceContextState, including the improved interop with Direct2D/DirectWrite
-D3D11_FEATURE_DATA_D3D9_OPTIONS feature detection
-In addition to the new Windows 8 WIC features, this update also fixes decoding of 96bpp floating-point TIFF images.
And the following features will be exclusive to Windows 8 for the time being:

    -Feature Level 11.1 hardware
-All D3D11_FEATURE_DATA_D3D11_OPTIONS features for Feature Level 10.x/11.0 devices
    -16bpp format support (DXGI_FORMAT_B5G6R5_UNORM, DXGI_FORMAT_B5G5R5A1_UNORM, DXGI_FORMAT_B4G4R4A4_UNORM)
    -Tile-based Deferred Renderer optimizations (D3D11_FEATURE_DATA_ARCHITECTURE_INFO)
-HLSL minimum precision shader optimizations (D3D11_FEATURE_SHADER_MIN_PRECISION_SUPPORT)
-DXGI 1.2 features for Stereo, Occlusion status notifications, Desktop Duplication, and NT Handle shared resources
-Windows Store app ICoreWindow features of DXGI 1.2
-WARP support for Feature Levels 11.0 and 11.1
-Direct3D hardware support in Session 0
    -The DirectComposition API

The situation seems a bit awkward, as it appears that some features (like the minimum precision shader optimizations) would be great if ported to Windows 7. The reason for not porting them - according to various reports - is due to the absence of WDDM1.2 on Windows 7, and from what I know so far, MS is not planning to release WDDM1.2 on its older OS.

IE 10 For Windows 7 Preview - tech
(hx) 10:59 PM CET - Nov,13 2012 - Post a comment / read (8)
For those of you interested, Internet Explorer 10 is now available for Windows 7.
The redesigned browser, Internet Explorer 10, made its debut last month when Microsoft released Windows 8, which makes dramatic changes to an operating system that has been powering PCs for decades.

Internet Explorer 10 initially is being introduced Tuesday to Windows 7 users in a "preview," or test, mode. The new browser isn't compatible with XP, Vista and any other older Windows version.

Although Microsoft is staking its future on Windows 8, far more PCs rely on Windows 7. Microsoft Corp. says more than 670 million licenses for Windows 7 have been sold since its release in 2009. Windows 8 is unlikely to approach that level of usage until at least 2014, based on analyst forecasts.

Desktops, laptops and tablet computers running on Windows 8 are sold with Internet Explorer 10 already installed. Those with older Windows versions will have to download and install the new browser separately.

Although Internet Explorer 10 is supposed to process Web pages more quickly and smoothly than its predecessors, it may have limited appeal to Windows 7 users.

That's because Microsoft primarily designed Internet Explorer 10 for tablet computers and other devices, including a new breed of PCs that have touch-screen displays. Relatively few Windows 7 PCs can be controlled with fingers on a display screen.

Microsoft makes DirectX 11.1 exclusive to Windows 8 - tech
(hx) 04:16 PM CET - Nov,12 2012 - Post a comment / read (14)
Looks like that DirectX 11.1 will be an API that is exclusive for Windows 8, just like DX10 was to Windows Vista and DX11 was to Windows 7 (well, that was until MS released a Vista version of it). This does not shock me at all, as Microsoft is simply trying to make everyone upgrade to its latest OS, by any means necessary. Daniel Moth, Microsoft's employee had this to say when a user asked about the possibility of DX11.1 coming to Windows 7:
WARP is C++ AMP’s CPU fallback solution that uses multi-core and vector instructions. It is a really fast emulator. (Aside: REF is also an emulator that you can target from C++ AMP, but it is slow and only useful for diagnostics).

For all practical purposes you should consider WARP as a component of Windows 8, which in theory could be shipped on other platforms. However, at this point there is no plan for that to happen (this is a decision owned by the Windows team and it is out of our hands). I think this answers the core of your question. (Aside: the same statement is true for REF).

As you figured out WARP is part of DirectX 11. With DirectX 11.1, WARP was enhanced with (among other things) support for DirectCompute and hence it is one of the accelerators for C++ AMP. DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7. DirectX 11 was made available for Vista (bing it), but at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7. (Aside: REF has also been enhanced with DirectX 11.1 to be a debugging target of Visual Studio 2012).

Should the plan change and either DirectX 11.1 as a whole, or WARP on its own, was made available on Windows 7, then you would have this available to target from C++ AMP. (Aside: the same statement holds true for REF). If the plan changes, you can bet we will be blogging about it (I personally am still crossing my fingers, but not as tightly as I did a few months ago).

TechNews - Apple Gets Patent On A Rectangle - tech

  • Core i7-3970X Extreme Review - Intel didn't have to launch the Core i7-3970X. Its -3960X was already the fastest single-socket workstation processor you could buy. But, in the year that has passed since Sandy Bridge-E first debuted, Intel also introduced its Ivy Bridge architecture. Better per-cycle performance gave enthusiasts something to consider: do you save some money by buying a quad-core Ivy Bridge-based processor, or splurge on an older architecture for its higher core count and more generous PCI Express connectivity? With the Core i7-3970X, Intel gives power users with money to spend a little more reason to lean in favor of Sandy Bridge-E. An extra 200 MHz under full load is reflected in apps like Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Autodesk 3ds Max, Microsoft Visual Studio, and Maxon Cinema 4D. A 100 MHz-higher Turbo Boost bump helps iTunes, PowerPoint, and Lame.
  • NVIDIA: People Buying Tablets Instead of Cheap PCs - Thursday during a conference call, Nvidia Chief Executive Jen-Hsun Huang said that consumers are turning to tablets instead of purchasing cheap PCs, even more so now that Microsoft's own Surface tablet and Windows RT are now available on the market. He indicated that consumers are beginning to realize that a top-notch tablet with solid features is better than a cheap PC with sub-par components.
  • Apple Gets Patent On A Rectangle With Rounded Corners - Someone at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office needs to be kicked in the nuts. Seriously. I'm not kidding.  The US Patent and Trademark Office issued patent no. D670,286 to Apple friday and it really does cover the outer edge shape of a device. There's no other way to look at it. As we've explained before, the scope of a design patent is defined by the drawings, and the solid lines are what counts - the dashed lines are just there for context. The 'D286 patent has a lot of gratuitous context but just a single solid line defining what is being protected.
  • Target Black Friday sale includes Retina iPad with $60 gift card for $499 - Black Friday is quickly approaching, and if you've been setting aside a few bucks here and there for a chance at grabbing cheap tech then maybe an iPad with Retina bundled with a $60 gift card for $499.99 from Target will empty the pig and satisfy your urge for a new toy. Wal-Mart will, too, have an iPad sale, but it's not the one with Retina.  Rather, Wal-Mart will be selling the iPad 2 for $399.99 and will come with a $75 gift card.  Wal-Mart will open early, and promises that the iPad 2 will be in stock for at least an hour.

The wireless carrier said that the Samsung ATIV Smart PC will go on sale in its stores on Friday, November 9th for $799.99. Unfortunately, that price also means that AT&T customers will have to pay the full amount for the tablet up front, rather than have it be subsidized under a two year contract like AT&T's many smartphones. The 11.6 inch tablet, which comes with a detachable keyboard, will have a version of Intel's Clover Trail processor, with a clock speed of 1.5GHz. It will also have 64 GB of storage.

Steam Security Vulnerability Found - tech
(hx) 09:08 AM CEST - Oct,17 2012 - Post a comment
According to TGN, some browsers will execute the steam:// protocol without so much as a single prompt to the user. Chrome, IE, and Firefox will all at least provide prompts to the user, with Chrome providing some more detailed information as to what that URL is attempting to do. The problem can also be found in browsers such as Webkit, MaxThon, Avant, and LunaScape. The fact that some browsers will not give enough information is only part of the problem. The big issue here is that the Steam URL can be used to run games with potentially harmful command line parameters.

TechNews - Windows 8 now available for pre-order - tech
(hx) 06:46 PM CEST - Oct,14 2012 - Post a comment / read (15)
Just curious, with Windows 8 looming what are your plans, if any? I've gotten to play with Windows 8 a bit and it absolutely horrifies me. I will definitely be sticking with Windows 7 as long as possible! :-)  BTW:  You probably noticed we finally moved this website to the new server. I do have to say the site is much faster than before! Please let me know if you have some issues... so far everything seems to be fine.  I still have to setup the promised sponsor page, ordered by contribution $  + few more things. So please be patient, be surprised :-)
  • Advanced Micro Devices Said to Plan Up to 2,340 Job Cuts - AMD plans to cut as many as 2,340 jobs, or about 20 percent of its workforce, a person with knowledge of the matter said. The cuts are expected to be announced as early as next week, said the person, who asked not to be named because the plans aren't public. At least 10 percent of AMD's staff of about 11,700 will be affected.
  • GeForce GTX 650 Ti Tested - At fairly conservative settings, the GK106-equipped GTX 650 Ti nearly overtakes Nvidia's GeForce GTX 560 and Radeon HD 6870. But when MSAA is applied at higher quality levels, the board takes a disproportionately large hit, ending up a few percentage points faster than the Radeon HD 6850, on average. As we saw in the benchmarks, that disparity can be mitigated somewhat through overclocking. In addition, most newer titles support alternative anti-aliasing modes, such as FXAA, that are easier on bandwidth-starved board designs. Assuming it surfaces at the $150 target Nvidia tells us to expect, the GeForce GTX 650 Ti offers the best performance at its price point, with average frame rates that outclass the Radeon HD 6850. The Radeon HD 7770 is beaten even more soundly. Conservative power, heat, and noise measurements make the card easy to live with and build an entry-level gaming system around, too. Another interesting comparison review can be found here (Gigabyte, Zotac, EVGA)
  • Corsair Neutron 240GB Solid State Drive - For a new contender in the consumer arena, this Neutron SSD simply nails it in the performance measurements. In the Steady State testing across the board we noticed solid performance that does not discriminate based upon the type of data. The Neutron performed remarkably well with both compressible and incompressible data. The 4K write performance was very good in both fresh and steady state. These same results were also experienced in our trace-based testing.
  • Toshiba Satellite U845: Ultrabooks Go Mainstream - It's one of the new 'budget' Ultrabooks, which hit the low end of Intel's Ultrabook spec for around $800, with designs that are still very thin and light but typically not as premium as class headliners like the Samsung Series 9 and ASUS Zenbook Prime. It's a breed that includes the Samsung Series 5 Ultra, HP’s new Envy 4t and 6t Ultrabooks, the Sony VAIO T13, and Lenovo's U310/410. How does Toshiba's Ultrabook stack up against them?
  • Dell to continue offering Windows 7 after lauch of Windows 8 - Dell will continue offering Windows 7 even after the release of Windows 8 at the end of October, the company said. The Windows 7 OS, which reached PCs in October of 2009, will be offered as an option to commercial and gaming customers, said Alison Gardner, director at Dell. The company will offer Windows 7 as long as it is allowed to, Gardner said.
  • Windows 8 now available for pre-order - If you're running Windows XP, Vista, or 7, you'll be able to upgrade to Win8 for just $40 when the new OS becomes available on October 26. That's for a downloadable copy, by the way. If you want a retail-boxed DVD, you'll need to shell out $70. According to the official Windows blog, you can pre-order those retail upgrades starting today. Newegg is now accepting orders for the Windows Pro upgrade DVD. What if you're building a new system and don't have an old Windows license lying around? The full versions of Win8 are available for pre-order, as well. Windows 8 costs $100, while the Pro version runs $140. Those are OEM licenses meant for system builders. Ed.note: No thanks ;-)
  • Microsoft signs off on Release To Manufacturing build of Office 2013 - General availability is slated for the first quarter of 2013. Microsoft also points out that customers purchasing Office 2010 from local retailers or resellers starting October 19 will receive the new Office for free once it is available. If you’re in the market to pick up Office 2010, it'd be best to wait until next Friday to do so
  • This is how they multiply in Japan -  I think the standard method shows how multiplication works much better than counting intersecting lines. Different people learn different ways, but in general it will be easier to understand that 3 groups of 2 apples is 6 apples than to add in lines and intersections as an abstract means getting to the same result. What do you think?

  • Samsung 840 Pro SSD Review - The 840 Pro's file copy results are hard to explain. Its single large compressed file performance was mind-bogglingly good, while its multiple small non-compressed file performance was mind-bogglingly bad. Between those two extremes, the small and large compressed and uncompressed "game" test gave fairly standard results. The drive went on to perform very well in our game install and virus scan tests.
  • Nvidia sees bright future for cloud gaming - VentureBeat has an extensive interview with Eisler that reveals some interesting nuggests about the challenges facing cloud-based gaming and how Nvidia plans to combat them. Obviously, the speed of one's Internet connection is a big obstacle. Eisler figures a 5Mbps pipe is required to pump out 30 frames per second at 720p resolution. To get 60 FPS at 1080p, you'd need 15-20Mbps. Then there's the issue of latency, which Eisler says was over 250 milliseconds with first-generation cloud gaming implementations. The GeForce Grid-powered Gaikai service purportedly cuts latency down to a little over 160 ms, which most folks would still consider too laggy for traditional multiplayer games.

Here we are at Day 1 of Intel Developer Forum witnessing some fabulous proof-of-concept designs. The first concept to really catch our eye is Intel's "Display without Boundaries", where Intel turns any surface into a fully capable multi-touch screen. That means you can turn any wall, table, or item into a touch-screen device that recognizes multitouch gestures and actions as smoothly as iPad.

FBI has 12 MILLION iPhone user's data - tech
(hx) 12:17 AM CEST - Sep,05 2012 - Post a comment / read (7)
To cap off a summer of devastating corporate data breaches, hackers yesterday posted online what might be the crown jewel of 2012 data dumps: 1 million identification numbers for Apple iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch's, all purportedly stolen from the FBI!

There may also be an additional 11 million Apple device IDs yet to be released, many with users' full names, addresses and telephone numbers attached. "Why exposing [sic] this personal data?" asked the unnamed writer of the Pastebin posting announcing the data dump, who claimed to be affiliated with the anti-government hacktivist group AntiSec. "Well, we have learnt it seems quite clear nobody pays attention if you just come and say 'Hey, FBI is using your device details and info and who the [expletive] knows what the hell are they experimenting with that,' well sorry, but nobody will care."

TechNews - Microsoft denies Windows 8 spying - tech

  • AMD slashes desktop CPU prices up to 23% - AMD has quietly cut the prices of its desktop processors. The biggest discounts apply to the A-series Llano APUs, which have been slashed by 11-20%. Enthusiasts will probably be most interested in the unlocked A8-3870K and A6-3670K, which now sell for $101 and $80, respectively. Those are the prices AMD charges in 1,000-unit quanties, so the actual street prices may differ slightly. On the FX front, we're looking at price drops of 7-15%. The FX-6200 gets the biggest cut, falling from $155 to $132, while the flagship FX-8150 is now down to $183. AMD has also introduced a new FX-4310 at $112. This dual-module, four-core Bulldozer CPU is clocked at 3.8GHz with a 3.9GHz Turbo peak and a 125W TDP.
  • ASUS GeForce GTX 660 Ti DirectCU II TOP 2GB Review - Out of the box, the ASUS GeForce GTX 660 Ti DirectCU II TOP 2GB has a 16% core overclock over regular offerings and a competent cooling solution. The VRMs design is also rather over-engineered for a 150W TDP offering, which is a still a good thing. Our main concern is its close proximity to GTX 670 prices (which will perform better in higher resolutions and detail settings) and ~$50-$100 price premium over other competitors offerings of the same, which may deter value-conscious buyer
  • Terabyte Toshiba hybrid drive has 8GB of NAND cache - According to The SSD Review, the drive is purported to hit speeds of 80MB/s while video editing and score 16,000 in PCMark Vantage. Those numbers don't sound particularly impressive, especially if 80MB/s is the drive's top sustained speed. The nine-month-old Momentus XT has sustained transfer rates around 90MB/s.
  • Logitech Washable Keyboard K310 - The keyboard that loves a wash. From a light dusting to a deep soak, this washable USB keyboard is easy to clean and easy to dry!
  • Guild Wars 2: Your Graphics Card And CPU Performance Guide - Guild Wars 2 looks good, even at its lowest detail settings. And it runs smoothly at 1920x1080 on a $40 Radeon HD 6450 using that entry-level preset. Only Nvidia's GeForce 210 can't handle such a combination. Stepping up to the Balanced detail preset, the GeForce GTX 550 Ti and Radeon HD 7750 are both well-suited to smooth performance 1920x1080. Switching on the Best Appearance option is smooth enough if you're using a Radeon HD 7770 or GeForce GTX 560 at 1920x1080. If you game at 2560x1600, however, you need at least a Radeon HD 7870 or GeForce GTX 580 to achieve a minimum of 30 FPS.
  • Microsoft denies Windows 8 SmartScreen spying - Earlier this week, Nadim Kobeissi posted a report that claimed the SmartScreen feature in Windows 8 allows Microsoft to see every application that is installed by a user and that Microsoft could be collecting that information into one large database. Furthermore, Kobsissi said that SmartScreen uses an "outdated and insecure" security system that could allow a hacker to intercept that data. Microsoft has now responded to Kobeissi's allegations and, as you might expect, claims that his findings are inaccurate.  As far as the security issue, Kobeissi said that the SmartScreen communications to Microsoft are using a server based on SSLv2.0, which he said is "known to be insecure and susceptible to interception." Microsoft told The Register that it does not in fact use SSLv2.0 and Kobeissi's blog has now been updated to state that Microsoft's servers have now been changed to support the SSLv3 protocol. Even with this change, Kobeissi still seems to be concerned about Windows 8 and its SmartScreen security features. In a post on his Twitter page, he states, "Dear Microsoft: If you don't want someone to seriously, seriously exploit your SmartScreen security, please contact me right now."

The jury also found that Apple did not infringe on Samsung's technology patents, although they stopped short of finding those patents invalid. The jury furthermore affirmed that Apple's patents are valid and that Samsung's infringement of them was willful. The jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages
