TechNews - Crysis 3 Performance Benchmarked - tech
(hx) 04:47 PM CET - Mar,10 2013 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • Crysis 3 Performance, Benchmarked On 16 Graphics Cards  - If you want some graphics quality, you'll need at least a Radeon HD 7850 or GeForce GTX 650 Ti to play at that same 1920x1080 resolution. And for access to the very highest detail setting, be ready to shell out for a Radeon HD 7950 with Boost or a GeForce GTX 660 Ti. Gaming across three screens is increasingly popular, and enthusiasts with three 1920x1080 displays may want to drop to the Medium detail preset in order to encourage playable frame rates. Even then, you'll want at least a GeForce GTX 680 or Radeon HD 7970. Two GeForce GTX 660 Tis in SLI or Radeon HD 7950s in CrossFire are an even better bet.
  • Windows 8 Touch-Screen Laptop Price Cuts Coming - DigiTimes claims that Microsoft will be lowering licensing costs for OEMs in the near future and offering discounted or free software as well. Microsoft will lower OEM licensing costs by offering a discount of US$20 for 11.6-inch and below notebooks that are equipped with touch screens, according to Taiwan-based vendors and ODMs. For below 10.8-inch notebooks, tablets and hybrids, Microsoft will offer the US$20 discount plus free Office 2013 software, the sources indicated. OEM licensing rates for Windows 8 Pro stand at US$80-90 currently, the sources noted.
  • ModernMix lets you run Windows 8 apps as desktop apps - ModernMix allows you to configure how Windows 8 apps behave depending on where you launch them - Start screen or desktop. Options include launching apps in the standard full screen, a windowed full screen mode, or a smaller window so they can be minimized, moved around, and resized. They'll operate like regular desktop apps so you can have as many as you like open at a time and even pin them to the taskbar.
  • Microsoft Updates Bing Desktop with Facebook App - Microsoft has, without much fanfare, updated its Windows 8 version of Bing Desktop to 1.2.113.0 which includes Facebook integration allowing direct access to news, messages and updates straight from the desktop.
  • AT&T Pushing Jelly Bean to the HTC One X - AT&T has announced that it is offering Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to the HTC One X. The system update, which can be downloaded over the air, offers a number of improvements, including Google Now and Project Butter. The system update also makes the One X compatible with the Isis mobile payment service, and adds a number of AT&T-branded applications. The download is available beginning today.
  • Android on Surface Pro - Alright guys, this is the Surface Pro running Android-x86. Everything works except no connectivity, no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Also the buttons could have better functions such as the Windows button or the power button which just brings up a power menu. Overall it's a great start, it's booting, and the drivers are there for mostly everything.
  • Intel in Talks With Apple to Manufacturer iPhone, iPad Processors - The Chicago Tribune reports that Intel Corp. has been in talks with Apple, Inc.to establish a foundry relationship.  The possible hookup could also see Intel co-design the company's next generation iPhone and iPad processors, based on a future Atom mobile processor.
  • Trend Micro claims 1 in 10 Android apps are malware - From over 2 million applications analyzed, Trend Micro found 293,091 of them to be outright malicious, while a further 150,203 were deemed to be 'high risk', contributing to a grand total of 443,294 dodgy applications for the platform. Of the 293,091 malicious apps, 68,740 of them were sourced directly from the Google Play Store; as the Store currently has around 700,000 apps, that roughly equates to 1 in every 10 apps being malicious. Aside from just malicious code, Trend Micro found 22% of apps inappropriately leaked user data, sending things such as IMEI numbers, ICCID numbers, contact data, telephone numbers and even microphone data over some sort of network. The security company also found a good 32% of apps were "Poor" in terms of battery usage, while 24% were poor in network usage, and 28% were poor in memory usage.
  • Google testing same-day delivery service - For nearly a month now, Google has been testing its own same-day delivery service named Google Shopping Express. This information comes from Reuters' unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

  • Check out these safe new ways police can stop criminals in their track - The coolest of the two is the Pit-BUL, which looks like a conventional speed bump but can deploy a net, as seen below, that almost immediately disables vehicles running over it. Designed more to protect an established position such as check point, border crossing or a military base entrance, this device works by using spikes attached to a large netting to lock up the front wheels. Each Pit-BUL costs up to $29,000, and since the nets are only useable for one application, additional net kits cost as much as $3,000.

Earth was left in its prime state, and continued to live on its own. 1,000 years later, a crash-landing of a small ship leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his father, army General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) stranded. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help so they can return to Nova Prime, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. The father and son must learn to work together and learn to trust one another if they want any chance of escaping Earth and returning home.

Tomb Raider PC - TressFX will be fully playable - tech
(hx) 05:12 PM CET - Mar,08 2013 - Post a comment / read (5)
According to Jason, member of Tomb Raider's development team, Nixxes and Nvidia are currently working on the first patch of Tomb Raider for the PC, and promised that they will be releasing iterative patches in the coming days to try and address many of the reported issues. Jason has also revealed that he's also been reading many of the comments regarding simulation issues and that there will be some improvements over TressFX.
I just wanted to message the community to let you guys know that we are actively reading your comments and issues, and will be releasing iterative patches in the coming days to try and address many of these issues.

Regarding TressFX specifically, please remember that this feature was designed with top end cards in mind, and even last year's model cards may struggle with it. I've also been reading many of the comments regarding simulation issues. Know that I'm actively working on trying to sort this out as best I can. I've tightened collision with the character as much as possible, which hopefully will help a little. We are also looking at simulation issues with hair spazzing out during camera cuts and erratic movements, and will hopefully have a fix for this as well soon. Lastly, we'll try to weight down the hair simulation a little more, as many of you find the current implementation "too floaty". It may take a few days, but know that someone is actively working on these things. And thank you for your continued support.

Edit: Hopefully this is good enough for proof. http://imgur.com/gallery/GQHEB3M/new

  • Teaching Kinect for Windows to Read Your Hands - One promising direction in the evolution of Kinect for Windows is enabling hand-gesture recognition. A machine-learning project uses a large, varied set of images of people's hands to train Kinect to determine if a hand is open or closed. This enables the development of a handgrip detector, which could launch another step forward in natural user interfaces.

  • Valve's Steam Box game system to begin testing in 3-4 months - Valve CEO Gabe Newell told the BBC its upcoming Steam Box gaming system will be ready for testing within "three to four months". The Steam Box is Valve's answer to game consoles, with which it hopes to offer a "dumbed down" living room PC gaming experience before efforts by companies like Apple beat it to the punch. Newell didn't share many specifics about the Steam Box, but said the company is still determining how much performance it can cram into its tiny PC-based game console. "There are noise issues and heat issues and being able to [deal with] that while still offering a powerful enough gaming experience is the challenge in building it." Newell told the BBC.

Next generation iPads, presumably the iPad 5 and potentially the iPad mini 2, may also debut as soon as this April. Sources familiar with the plans have told iMore that the iPhone 5S does indeed have the same basic design as the iPhone 5, with a more advanced processor and an improved camera. With the iPhone 5, Apple made the casing thinner but managed to keep essentially the same, if not slightly better, overall quality.

  • White House: It's time to legalize cell phone unlocking - In February, a petition calling for an end to the ban on unlocking cell phones was introduced. In a short amount of time, the petition received the requisite 100,000 signatures needed to elicit a possible White House responsible. Today, the administration did indeed respond to the petition and it appears the White House is in favor of letting consumers unlock their phones. In a reply titled "It's Time to Legalize Cell Phone Unlocking", the White House shows its support for the petition. "The White House agrees with the 114,000+ of you who believe that consumers should be able to unlock their cell phones without risking criminal or other penalties." the White House stated. The response later continues, "The Obama Administration would support a range of approaches to addressing this issue, including narrow legislative fixes in the telecommunications space that make it clear: neither criminal law nor technological locks should prevent consumers from switching carriers when they are no longer bound by a service agreement or other obligation.

Tomb Raider PC Plagued by Crashes (NVIDIA) - tech
(hx) 09:07 AM CET - Mar,06 2013 - Post a comment / read (17)
Tomb Raider has just been released but it seems that Nvidia users won't be able to enjoy Crystal Dynamics' title as the final build is seriously bugged for all Nvidia users. According to Nvidia, the final build of Tomb Raider suffers from performance and stability issues even with the latest GeForce Beta drivers:
We are aware of major performance and stability issues with GeForce GPUs running Tomb Raider with maximum settings. Unfortunately, NVIDIA didn’t receive final code until this past weekend which substantially decreased stability, image quality and performance over a build we were previously provided. We are working closely with Crystal Dynamics to address and resolve all game issues as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, we would like to apologize to GeForce users that are not able to have a great experience playing Tomb Raider, as they have come to expect with all of their favorite PC games.
Turn off tesselation. Fixed the issue completely for me. Was crashing once every few minutes after the cave section now it hasn't happened once. Also, if you want to use the cool tressfx hair stuff but don't like the performance hit, turn off High Precision to compensate. Big performance gains for a tiny downgrade to shadows/lighting but I think the hair effects more than make up for it.

Version 314.14 brings optimization for upcoming games, as well as current games that could use a boost. Specifically, the new beta drivers deliver up to a 23% boost in Sniper Elite V2 and a 9% boost in Sleeping Dogs. In SLI mode, other games also get an increase in performance, including a 9% boost in StarCraft II and a 5% boost in Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

TechNews - Windows 8 adoption at 2.79% - tech

  • Intel: ARM Chips Are Propellers, We Build Jet Engines - Intel currently trails ARM Holdings Plc's coalition of chipmakers in the mobile chip market, with the ARM alliance owning over 95 percent of smartphone and tablet processor sales by volume.  At the 2013 Mobile World Congress, Intel is trying different strategies to lure buyers away from ARM.  It has scored some design wins with its new Lexington chip, the Intel Atom Z2420, which is popping up in Android tablets as cheap as $250 USD. That aggressive pricing could help Intel.  At a 2013 Consumer Electronics Show press event, an Intel executive told us that his company is finding itself in a foreign position in which it has faster hardware, but is being rejected by some OEMs because of (alleged) backdoor dealings with ARM.  On paper one disadvantage that Intel's Atom smartphone processor carry is a lower core count.  While ARM chips like Qualcomm Inc.'s Snapdragon 600 or NVIDIA Corp.'s Tegra 4 typically have a quad-core layout, Intel's current smartphone chips are single-core. And yet Intel still manages to beat many multi-core ARM chips in benchmarks due to its strong single-threaded performance, indicating that core-count may be a misleading metric.
  • Epic Citadel for Android: Intel Atom Processor Z2580 (Clover Trail+) - As demonstrated at Mobile World Congress 2013, Epic Citadel runs at full frame rate on Intel's Dual-Core Atom Processor Z2580 (Clover Trail+).
  • Seagate to Discontinue 7200rpm 2.5inch Drives - Seagate will stop the production of their 7200RPM 2.5" drives by the end of this year and I just got a confirmation from Seagate that this is really the case. Seagate currently offers four 7200RPM 2.5" lineups: Momentus 7200.4, 7200.2, Momentus Thin 7200, and Momentus XT. The latter is Seagate's hybrid drive, which couples the spinning platters with 8GB of SLC NAND for caching purposes. The move makes sense when looking at the market's state. 7200RPM mobile hard drives have always been a premium product and are mostly found in high-end laptops or built-to-order configurations. Due to the decline in SSD prices over the last few years, the market for faster hard drives has quickly faded away because users seeking for performance have opted for SSDs instead of 7200RPM hard drives. While 7200RPM 2.5" hard drives are still significantly cheaper per GB than SSDs, even a small (32-128GB) SSD will provide better overall performance when used as an OS and applications drive, and high-end laptops can often be configured with dual-drives to overcome the capacity issue (especially with mSATA around or by removing the optical drive).
  • HGST doubles HDD capacities by combining self-assembling molecules, nanoimprinting - Self-assembling co-polymers aren't exactly new, but according to HGST, forming them into concentric rings usable by mechanical disk drives is an industry first. The result is a drive substrate peppered with twice the magnetic elements found on typical drives, effectively doubling its potential storage capacity. However, HGST believes its processes can be refined to produce even denser storage, more than doubling their capacity in the future.
  • Windows 8 adoption at 2.79% - Windows 8 continued its slow but steady growth in February grabbing 2.26 percent of the operating system market share, up from 1.72 percent in December and 1.09 percent in November according to Net Applications.

Crysis 3 Performance Test: Graphics & CPU - tech
(hx) 12:07 PM CET - Mar,02 2013 - Post a comment / read (9)
The chaps over at TechSpot have tested and compared seventeen processors and seventeen graphics cards with the new Crysis 3 first-person shooter PC game. Here's an excerpt:
Well, we have good news and bad news: Crysis 3's visuals have far exceeded our expectations, but you won't be able to enjoy them on max without investing in some serious hardware. For starters, you'll definitely want a quad-core processor, preferably a recent Core i5/i7 or the FX-8350. Assuming you clear that hurdle, you'll likely want dual GTX 680s or HD 7970 GHz Editions to play on very high at 1920x1200 or more.

In other words, you'll need at least $800 worth of graphics crunching prowess in your chassis if you want to experience Crysis 3 at its finest. If you can't foot that bill, you may be stuck with medium quality, which still requires at least a GTX 680/670 or the HD 7970 GHz Edition for 60fps at 1920x1200, though you can get by with something more affordable like the HD 7870 if you're comfortable with the low 40s.

t's worth noting that we only tested the stock presets, so you should be able to achieve better results by tweaking certain settings. Furthermore, we stuck with SMAA, which was only set to 1x (low), as this appeared to be the default setting for the game. FXAA should allow for better performance, though we didn't like the image quality as much. Of course, you can disable AA entirely if you don't mind jaggies.

In our opinion, for the typical gamer, the best graphics card for playing Crysis 3 right now is the GTX 660 Ti, as a single card can deliver an average of 40fps at 1920x1200 using the high quality preset, which is more frames than the HD 7970 and the old GTX 580. Better still, two of them in SLI allow for a solid 60fps at 1920x1200 on very high quality, which seems like the very definition of a sweet spot to us.

LG demos wireless 4K Ultra HD streaming - tech
(hx) 06:57 PM CET - Feb,25 2013 - Post a comment / read (28)
LG is demonstrating its wireless Ultra HD transmission technology this week at Mobile World Congress. At the company's booth I got a chance to walk through a gaming demo on an Android device that was displaying at 1080p on the phone, upscaling to 4K on the TV. The technology works by connecting over Wi-Fi and using the Miracast peer-to-peer wireless screencast standard, allowing you to simply stream what you're seeing on the phone to a TV. The streaming was fairly smooth, but panning did cause some frame rate drops occasionally.

AMD Teases "TRESSFX" - tech
(hx) 06:45 PM CET - Feb,25 2013 - Post a comment
AMD is set to announce a new rendering feature called TRESSFX, calling it "a new frontier of realism in PC gaming". According to this image, a new feature will be unveiled on March February 26th. This feature will be called tressfx and is said to be a new frontier of realism in PC gaming. The aforementioned image shows a girl (or more importantly her hair), suggesting that this could very well be AMD's answer to Nvidia’s PhysX technology.

TechNews - Google Glass: the future? - tech
(hx) 10:05 PM CET - Feb,24 2013 - Post a comment
Google's futuristic Project Glass could arrive earlier than expected and be available on store shelves by the end of this year. Google's Project Glass glasses will probably use a transparent LCD or AMOLED display to put information in front of your eyeballs. It's location-aware thanks to a camera and GPS, and you can scroll and click on information by tilting your head, something that is apparently quite easy to master. Google Glasses will also use voice input and output. Google plans to sell Glass for less than the $1,500 it now charges developers. If it launches this year, we expect it to be right at the end of it, targetting the busy Holiday shopping season. What do you think about Glass, excited about it?

I'm interested to see how much developed they will get after they finally start a beta with the public. Pretty cool piece of technology though. On the other side, I think this product has the potential to be unsafe like texting while driving or walking. People will divide their attention between two things and they will make mistakes that will cost them injury or worse. I also wonder how this will effect your eye. We already have questions about the radiation from our phones. What about this thing millimeters away fromyour eye? Also not sure I like the idea of Google seeing what I see, knowing even more about me and what I do and say than it did before. I have nothing to hide but still, too much information shared with people and companies I may not wish to share with....
  • Six Strikes Officially Begins On Monday - After several big delays the Copyright Alert System, known as Six Strikes kicks off on Monday many months after the proposed rollout date was to begin. The ISPs-industry giants AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner, and Verizon - will launch their versions of the CAS on different days throughout the week. Comcast is expected to be the first, on Monday. So, now we get to watch people get falsely accused, those with open WiFi suddenly have to fear bogus slow downs to their networks and other assorted collateral damage. Oh, and does anyone actually expect to see a sudden spike in "sales"?
  • Best Graphics Cards For The Money: February 2013 - If you count yourself among those lucky enough to have the money for one Titan card, consider a GeForce GTX 690 instead. Its dual GK104 graphics processors are faster, at the end of the day. The only time we'd recommend otherwise would be if you're working within the confines of a small machine unable to accommodate the 690's length: a Tiki, a Bolt, a Revolt, or something else along those lines. However, if you're willing to spend big on three Titans, well, there's nothing else out there capable of matching such a configuration's performance.
  • Benchmarking GeForce GTX Titan 6 GB: Fast, Quiet, Consistent  - Pay the same $1,000 for a GeForce GTX 690 if you only want one dual-slot card and your case accommodates the long board.  The Titan isn’t worth $600 more than a Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition.  Buy a GeForce GTX Titan when you want the fastest gaming experience possible from a mini-ITX machine like Falcon Northwest’s Tiki or iBuyPower's Revolt.  Buy a GeForce GTX Titan if you have a trio of 1920x1080/2560x1440/2560x1600 screens and fully intend to use two or three cards in SLI.
  • Best Buy Offers $100 Discount on Windows 8 Touchscreen PCs - Beginning Sunday, Best Buy will be offering a $100 discount on all touchscreen Windows 8 PCs.
  • Windows 7, 8 and RT Updates Due on Tuesday - Breaking with the regular Patch Tuesday routine of the second Tuesday of the month, Microsoft has announced that Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows RT will be receiving a new platform update on Tuesday, February 26th, which may be a clue as to the launch date for the final version of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7. The Microsoft Support Page has word that there will be a platform update released on that day for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. In fact, you can download a pre-release version of that update right now. The update is supposed to offer "improved features and performance" and is a prerequisite for IE10. The same support page shows that there will also be a software update for Windows 8, Windows RT, and Windows Server 2012 on that day, along with an update rollup for Windows Server 2012 Essentials. At the moment, the only information on what's included in those updates is that they are supposed to "resolve issues in Windows".
  • Google Releases Chrome 25 Stable Version - Chrome 25 is adding voice-based services including support for Web Speech API and gives greater control of extension installations. The update is automatic for pre-installed browser versions or can be downloaded separately.
  • Microsoft Officially Launches Outlook.com - Last week Microsoft Corp. officially announced that its highly popular email service, Outlook.com, is ready for prime time. Since the release of Outlook.com last summer as a preview, millions of people have already actively started using it, making it the world's fastest growing email service, going from 0 to 60 million in just six months.
  • Google to offer free and unlimited music streaming - While not as popular as Apple, Google does currently offer their own music download service in the U.S. and parts of Europe.  Now they want to expand their music offerings by creating a real music streaming service that would be free and similar to Spotify. Reports have suggested that the new streaming service would be advertisement supported.  There has also been word that Google may offer an ad-free version for a subscription fee, but no word on how much it may run.
  • Google Glass Video Shows Off UI and Voice Commands - Google has put out another Google Glass video showing off new features like search and voice commands
  • I used Google Glass: the future, with monthly updates - Human beings have developed a new problem since the advent of the iPhone and the following mobile revolution: no one is paying attention to anything they're actually doing. Everyone seems to be looking down at something or through something. Those perfect moments watching your favorite band play or your kid's recital are either being captured via the lens of a device that sits between you and the actual experience, or being interrupted by constant notifications. Pings from the outside world, breaking into what used to be whole, personal moments.
  • Google Glass Has Another New Gadget - CONAN Highlight: It's another Google innovation, only this time going in an all-new direction!
  • Video Tracks Chinese Hacker In Action - It is pretty interesting to get a behind the scenes look at a Chinese hacker in action
  • PayPal Here Coming to the United Kingdom - PayPal Here is designed to offer small business owners the ability to accept all manner of payment forms, be it cards, check, of PayPal. The service is based around a small card reader that plugs into your smartphone and a companion app that runs the software side of things. Now PayPal Here is on its way to the UK, albeit in a slightly different form.
  • A video hands-on with the HTC One - The One will be available on carriers starting mid-March. The device isn't merely technically advanced, but is lovingly crafted from premium metals, too, leaving no doubt that the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer has placed considerable blood, sweat, and tears into this handset. Rectangular, flat, and extremely thin, the HTC One is practically all screen. Its 4.7-inch (1080p) LCD display uses what the company calls SoLux technology for improved picture quality and generates 468 pixels per inch (ppi). This, says HTC, helps the One's screen to boast the most impressive viewing experience of any phone it has ever created. Since the display is slightly smaller at the same resolution, the One's screen has a denser pixel count than the Droid DNA (5-inch, 440 ppi).
  • Raining Circles On The Sun (video) - On July 19, 2012, an eruption occurred on the sun that produced a moderately powerful solar flare and a dazzling magnetic display known as coronal rain. Hot plasma in the corona cooled and condensed along strong magnetic fields in the region. Magnetic fields, are invisible, but the charged plasma is forced to move along the lines, showing up brightly in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength of 304 Angstroms, and outlining the fields as it slowly falls back to the solar surface

NVIDIA DRIVERS 314.07 WHQL - tech
(hx) 08:19 PM CET - Feb,18 2013 - Post a comment
The new GeForce 314.07 WHQL driver is now available to download - Win7/Vista 32-bit / 64-bit, WinXP 32-bit / 64-bit. An essential update for gamers jumping into Crysis 3 this week, 314.07 WHQL improves single-GPU and multi-GPU performance in Crytek's sci-fi shooter by up to 65%. Other highlights include sizeable SLI and single-GPU performance gains of up to 27% in Assassin’s Creed III, 19% in Civilization V, 14% in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, 14% in DiRT 3, 11% in Just Cause 2, 10% in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, 10% in F1 2012, and 10% in Far Cry 3. Rounding out the release is a ‘Excellent’ 3D Vision profile for Crysis 3, a SLI profile for Ninja Theory’s DmC: Devil May Cry, and an updated SLI profile for the free-to-play, third-person co-op shooter, Warframe. You can download the GeForce 314.07 WHQL drivers with one click from the GeForce.com homepage; Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8 packages are available for desktop systems, and for notebooks there are Windows 7 and Windows 8 downloads that cover all non-legacy products. (thanks Csimbi)
Our first, all-new WHQL driver of 2013 features performance improvements in seventeen games, measured across our complete range of GTX 600 Series graphics cards. Improvements of particular note include 27% in Assassin’s Creed III, 19% in Civilization V, 14% in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, 14% in DiRT 3, 11% in Just Cause 2, 10% in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, 10% in F1 2012, and 10% in Far Cry 3.

Please note that performance improvements benefit all GeForce GTX graphics cards, though obviously to varying degrees. Showing the level of improvement on every single supported GPU would be fantastic, but sadly this is unfeasible given the number of benchmarks required. For example, for each GPU and game to be tested take a before and after reading to show the level of improvement, then multiply the number of tests by the number of resolutions, three, and then again by the number of different detail levels and anti-aliasing modes. Then, finally, to verify the results, run everything again. With so many GPUs in our lineup, even focusing exclusively on the most popular models would prove impossible in the time between a driver being finalized and released.
TechNews - Buy Office 365, Not Office 2013? - tech
(hx) 05:08 PM CET - Feb,18 2013 - Post a comment / read (13)
What is pretty clear is that Microsoft is trying hard to get people on subscriptions. For example, the Office Professional subscription allows installation on up to 5 devices per user (like Office 365 Home Premium), where as the standalone version no longer allows installation on a second device such as a laptop. ..Maybe start to use some alternatives - LibreOffice (take a look at on this comparison table), Apache OpenOffice, Kingsoft Office - they offer all the vast majority of people need for most of their office-suite needs. MS Office coasts along based on its name and its popularity in the business community, not because it's 'better.' What do  you think?
  • Apple updates Macbook Pro models with Retina - Apple is updating its MacBook Pro with Retina display range with faster processors, while also cutting the prices. The 13-inch Macbook Pro with Retina display will start at $1,499 for the 128GB flash model, while the 256GB flash model will retail for $1,699, and will also feature a 2.6GHz processor. The lower end 15-inch version has had its spec upped with a 2.4GHz quad-core processor, while the higher-end model comes with a 2.7GHz quad-core processor and 16GB of RAM. Apple is also cutting the price of the 13-inch MacBook Air with 256GB of flash, with it now retailing for $1,399. All the revamped and lower priced models are available immediately from Apple or authorised resellers.
  • Microsoft: Buy Office 365, Not Office 2013. Or You'll Be Sorry - For those still wondering whether to choose Microsoft's traditional Office productivity software suite or the new, subscription-based Office 365, consider this: traditional Office users will have to wait for "updates," and they won't receive any new "upgrades" to the service at all. And there's another consideration, too: Office 2013 is apparently locked to a single machine, perpetually, while Office 365 licenses are sold to a group of users, who can license and de-license PCs at will. In related news, here's some Office 365 Home Premium vs. Office 2013 comparison
  • Microsoft Fixes Critical Flaws - This round of updates fixes 57 known security vulnerabilities in Windows, Office and IE. So, if you are running a Windows box, today is definitely the day to get your patch on. This security update resolves thirteen privately reported vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer. The most severe vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted webpage using Internet Explorer. An attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could gain the same user rights as the current user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

  • AOL still makes over $500 million per year on its dial-up service - AOL just released quasi-profit numbers for each of its divisions for the first time. As expected, AOL's dial-up subscription business--the business that powered AOL to astounding global success in the 1990s--still accounts for the vast majority of AOL's profits. In fact, AOL's subscription business generates more than all of the company's profits, after accounting for AOL's corporate costs. On the one hand, this is really bad news, because AOL's subscription business is still shrinking. On the other hand...This shrinking business still throws off an amazing amount of cash--about $500 million a year--that AOL can use and is using to invest in other cool businesses (content and an ad network). And the shrinking dial-up business is shrinking at a much slower rate than it used to--because AOL is finding ways of adding other value for its subscribers.

  • Google To Open Its Own Stores - An extremely reliable source has confirmed that Google is in the process of building stand-alone retail stores in the U.S. and hopes to have the first flagship Google Stores open for the holidays in major metropolitan areas. The mission of the stores is to get new Google Nexus, Chrome, and especially upcoming products into the hands of prospective customers. Other changes included new boarding pass behavior in Apple's Passbook software, tweaks to Safari, reworked music playback controls from the lock screen, and a back-end change in Apple's mapping software.
  • Latest iOS jailbreak dubbed the most popular ever -  Just days after its release, one of the most high-profile iOS jailbreaks turns out to be the fastest to be adopted too. Evasi0n, which gives iPhone, iPod, and iPad owners deeper access to the software on their devices than Apple allows, has been downloaded and used by nearly 7 million people since its release on Monday, Forbes reports
  • How to Bypass the Lockcode Screen on iOS 6.1 - So, iOS 6.1 hasn't been Apple's finest hour. So far it's been plagued with connection issues, battery woes, and now it's sadly insecure, too. You can bypass any lockcode on an iPhone using this straightforward sequence of button presses. The instructions are pretty simple. First you have to pretend to turn the phone off, then make an aborted emergency call, then a quick bit of off button and cancel pressing. That boots you into the full phone app where you can pretty much call or message anyone you like, or edit phone contacts. There's currently no word from Apple as to when this will be fixed, but let's hope it's soon.

  • Russian Fireball Won't Be Last Surprise Asteroid Attack - The world will have to live with surprise asteroid attacks on the scale of Friday's Russian fireball, at least for a while. The meteor that exploded over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk without warning Friday (Feb. 15), damaging hundreds of buildings and wounding more than 1,000 people, was caused by a space rock about 50 feet (15 meters) wide, researchers said. Asteroids of this size are both difficult to detect and incredibly numerous, so it will take a long time for astronomers to find and map out the orbits of all the potentially dangerous ones. Besides, researchers have bigger fish to fry.

Obama also proposes the minimum wage be required to keep pace with inflation. The current rate took effect in 2009. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have higher minimum wage rates than the federal requirement. Washington state's is highest at $9.19. The proposal, which Obama made during his State of the Union address Tuesday, is sure to draw opposition from business groups and congressional Republicans who say higher rates increase costs and reduce employment. The White House says the new wage would raise pay for more than 15 million workers and indirectly help millions more. Obama wants the rate to increase in stages over three years.

It's impossible for next-gen consoles to match PC - tech
(hx) 03:04 PM CET - Feb,18 2013 - Post a comment / read (9)
Crytek boss Cevat Yerli told Eurogamer it's impossible for consoles to match the performance of a powerful PC.
Crytek boss Cevat Yerli, restricted by non-disclosure agreements with both Microsoft and Sony, told Eurogamer Crysis 3 running on a powerful PC looks better than next-generation games due to be announced. Indeed, he said it is "impossible" for consoles to match gaming PCs.

The chief reason behind this, Yerli said, is cost.

"Without breaking NDAs that are in place, realistically, from purely a price point perspective, it is impossible.

"It's impossible to package $2000-3000 into a mainstream, let's say $500 console. I'm not saying they are $500 consoles. They may launch a console at $2000, but the consumer pricing is usually much lower than that.

"So, given consumer pricing, and given the cost of production of a gamer PC and the amount of watt of power it needs, which is like a fridge, it's impossible."

  • ASUS ROG Maximus V Extreme review - There can be no doubt that when it comes to overclocking, the ASUS Maximus V Extreme packs an incredible amount of features - more than any other similarly priced board. Making use of all these features does have its caveats, and taking full advantage of everything the board offers does require specific hardware, but you will not buy just any part when it comes to breaking records.
  • The Full Intel SSD 525 Review: 30GB, 60GB, 120GB, 180GB & 240GB Tested - All of the 525 members feature the same ~12.6% spare area (~14% OP). Despite the reduction in number of NAND packages, the 90 and 180GB models aren't actually any slower than the 60GB and 120GB versions respectively. The reason that performance doesn't suffer when going to these odd sizes is because Intel/SF do a good job of parallelizing requests across all NAND die within a package, of which there are physically more in the 90/180GB configurations compared to the 60/120GB models.
  • Surface Pro: Excellent Performance, Gorgeous Screen, Poor Battery - Even though Surface Pro isn't due to launch until February 9, reviews for the tablet went live tonight. Not surprisingly, reviewers loved the tablet's screen and its speedy Core i5 processor, but blasted the horrid battery life that puts it at the bottom of the pack.
  • Google Chromebook Pixel with 2560 x 1700 Touchscreen (Video) - The supposedly leaked video, embedded below, showcases the new Chrome OS-powered notebook from Google and it's looking to be much more of a powerhouse than its predecessors. For starters, that display is an impressive 2560 x 1700 pixels and it also happens to be a touchscreen. If it were not for Chrome OS, I'd almost say that this was going to fall into the lap of the current crop of Windows 8 touchscreen notebooks. The Chromebook Pixel, which is also apparently being called the Chromebook Link, is reportedly being tested right now at Google's offices.
  • Dell going private in $24 billion deal - Dell has officially confirmed what's been rumored for the last few weeks by announcing plans to go off the publicly-traded stock market and into private hands. According to a press release issued moments ago, the transaction will be financed through a combination of cash and equity from founder Michael Dell, funds from investment firms Silver Lake and Michael Dell's MSD Capital, a $2 billion loan from Microsoft, plus debt financing from a number of banks. All in all the deal is valued at approximately $24.4 billion.
  • Bitcasa: unlimited cloud sync & storage for $69/year, 10GB free - The multi-platform service is poised to shake things up by offering unlimited space with no file size restrictions for $10 per month -- or just $99 per year.
  • Explore the Grand Canyon with Google Maps - Google Maps is releasing panoramic imagery of one of the world's most spectacular national monuments: the Grand Canyon
  • The Pirate Bay Documentary Now Online - The Pirate Bay documentary is now online.
  • Dead Space 3 exploits allow players to avoid in-game fees - GameFront showed how some of the exploits work, with one requiring the user to go a specific location, pick up an item, and then save and quit before returning to the game to loot the item again. Another of the exploits is as simple as walking into a building to pick up an item, and then walking out and returning again to find the item has immediately respawned. It sounds like extremely bad coding, and many people will be unaware they are even exploiting the game in this case. An exploit is considered any use of the game in an unintended way, and does not necessarily have to result in the player profiting from its use. Often times they are discovered by accident, which a player can claim in their defence, but repeated use, which may be logged on the game servers, could show deliberate intent to exploit the game.
  • How to Delete Your Facebook Profile Permanently - Have you ever wanted to just trash your Facebook account completely but found that it was so much easier to sign up rather than sign out? Well help is on the way in step-by-step directions to get your account completely removed once and for all.
  • Dont Gen't Scroogled by Gmail - Outlook.com launched Don't Get Scroogled by Gmail, a national campaign at http://www.scroogled.com to educate Americans about Google's practice of going through the contents of all Gmail emails to sell and target ads. According to a public GfK Roper study, commissioned by Microsoft Corp., 70 percent of consumers don't know that major email providers routinely engage in the practice of reading through their personal email to sell ads - something that 88 percent of people disapprove of once they are informed. Unlike Gmail, Outlook.com doesn't go through the content of users' emails to show ads. Outlook.com hopes this campaign will help educate consumers about Google's email practices and promote Outlook.com's policy of prioritizing the privacy of its users' emails.
  • New Flash Update Fixes Active Exploits - Go plug your Adobe hole before someone sneaks in a back door and exploits you. Make sure you only use this link because, in true Adobe style, the company says you might have to temporarily disable your antivirus software before installing a fix for two zero-day exploits
  • Android App That Infects Your PC - Kaspersky Labs discovered an Android app that, after infecting your PC, uses your microphone to spy on you.
  • Eight Characters Will Crash Almost Any Application on a Mac - All software has bugs, but this one is a particularly odd one. If you type "File:///" (no quotes, the f must be capitalized) into almost any app on your Mac, it will crash. The discovery was made recently and a bug report was posted to Open Radar on Thursday. It only gained a lot of attention on Friday night though, thanks to a Hacker News submission. First off, it's worth noting that the bug only appears to be present in OS X Mountain Lion and is not reproducible in Lion or Snow Leopard. That's not exactly good news given that this is the latest release of Apple's operating system, which an increasing number of Mac users have switched to.
  • Wine demoed on Android, runs Windows apps - Wine, the well known and loved software that allows you to run Windows apps on other platforms such as Linux and Mac OS X, has been demoed running on Android at the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting (FOSDEM).
  • Ubuntu Smartphone to ship from October 2013 - The Linux-based OS will soon find itself inside a smartphone. It will also arrive on tablet computers and aim for the work desks of professionals, especially those from the IT sphere. According to Mark Shuttleworth, founder and CEO of Canonical Ltd, this will enable users to share data seamlessly between PCs and portable devices as well as enhance access privileges to corporate date. The immediate challenge that the new platform will find is penetrating to the high-utility mobile and portable device OS market, with Android, iOS and Windows Phone running the show. BlackBerry 10 also looks quite promising, should RIM decide to dig into its capabilities deeper.
  • BlackBerry Z10 Review - The BlackBerry Z10 has what many might consider a generic appearance. There are no eye-popping colors like we've seen with Windows Phone 8 devices, nor any bold curves to elicit the cliche labeling of a phone being "sexy." It's an all-business box, rectangular and overwhelmingly black except for the silver-colored buttons that appear in limited areas. That's not to say that being all business is boring; the Z10 just so happens to have a design that favors minimalism. The 130mm x 65.6mm x 9mm (5.11in x 2.58in x 0.35in) frame is basically the "Little Black Dress" of smartphones.
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Coming March 15th, Shipping To Europe in April - The next Galaxy S is rumored to feature an Exynos 5 Octa (8-Core) CPU, Mali-T658 (8-Core) GPU, 4.99 Super AMOLED Full HD Resolution Display, 2GB of RAM, 13 Megapixel Rear facing Camera capable of shooting 1080p Full HD Videos at 30FPS, 2 Megapixel front facing camera capable of shooting 720p HD Videos and running Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean out of the box.

Over the years, many features that were once jailbreak-only made their way to iOS or via third parties through the App Store. However, there are still many things you can do with jailbreak tweaks that aren't possible on non-jailbroken devices. Here's a list of some of the most interesting and useful tweaks that caught our attention in recent months.
  • Epiphany One Puck Juices Up Your Smartphone - All you need to do is to place a hot object such as a piping hot mug of your favorite coffee on the red side, or if it is a sweltering summer day, then an ice cool mug of Coke on the blue side, followed by hooking up your smartphone. If you have faith in the Epiphany One Puck, then pledging $99 will net you a single Puck, where it is tipped to retail for $150 should the idea take off in a massive manner.

  • Intel SSD DC S3700 Tested - In the four years that passed since Intel launched its X25-E, the company appeared to either lose its way or lose interest in the enterprise segment. The only follow-up effort to emerge from its labs prior to now was the SSD 710, and that drive was simultaneously underwhelming and expensive. With the introduction of the SSD DC S3700, Intel fixed many of the reasons why its SSD 710 didn't succeed. And along the way, Intel's engineers helped redefine the way we evaluate the performance of solid-state storage. The first major fix was a complete redesign of its controller. A new 6 Gb/s ASIC represents a major step forward for Intel. Not only does this help push performance far beyond what the SSD 710 could do, but it also establishes a new benchmark for consistency never-before seen from a SATA-based SSD.
  • Build Your Own: The Customizable, Illuminated Dream Machine  - The mouse, keyboard, gamepad, enclosure, memory, fan controller, and even power supply are loaded with configurable color controls.
  • Microsofts 128GB Surface Pro will ship with just 83GB of usable - Microsoft has revealed that the 128GB Surface Pro will ship with just 83GB of usable storage space. No word yet on how much space the 64GB version will arrive with but if the same 45GB is unavailable from the get-go, Microsoft may have a tough time convincing buyers to invest in a premium tablet with just 19GB of storage
  • Cool Morphing Touchscreen Keyboard - Tactus, a California company, has developed technology that can turn a flat tablet screen into a keyboard with bumpy button, according to the BBC .The keyboard bumps rise up from the screen when you need them and disappear when typing is finished. The company debuted the new technology at CES in Las Vegas. Due for release in the near future - 2014.
  • Office 365 Launches for $100/Year - Microsoft released Office 365 as a subscription, cloud-based service that costs only a little over $8 per month. Office 365 Home Premium costs $99.99 per year and features Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and Publisher. It also comes with 20GB of cloud storage in SkyDrive and 60 minutes of worldwide calling through Skype per month. This version works with up to five desktops, tablets and laptops, and will receive automatic updates since it's cloud-based. The Office 365 subscription gets harder to resist the more PCs you have. For those with two PCs, Office 365 will cost you $50 per PC, compared to paying $280 for the traditional desktop licenses needed for two PCs. When you get to $20 per PC (per year) for five PCs, compared to $700 to install Office Home and Student on five PCs, the subscription model becomes a no-brainer. Five PC installations for $100 a year is a pretty good deal.  On top of that, you also get a few freebies including 60 minutes of international Skype calling per month and an extra 20GB of SkyDrive storage. If you purchase Office 2013, you only get a single installation for $140. You also get an extra 5GB of SkyDrive storage.
  • Come May, we may see the 1080p Nexus 7 successor - Looks like the next Nexus 7 is making rounds. The device that is touted to be a successor will come from Asus and will offer 1080p resolutions (1920x1080 pixels) on its generous 7-inch display screen, thus reaching 315 PPi. It is also expected to contain thinner side bezels, advanced graphics (hopefully Nvidia Tegra 4) and most likely, Android Key Lime Pie! The report goes on to say that we should be expecting the tablet in May.
  • Skype for Android Update Brings Portrait Calling - Skype for Android received a nice update today that will help to complement your tablet's screen. More specifically, the app is now designed to support video calling in portrait view on your Android tablet. Also in the update, Skype for Android now supports Portuguese, Norwegian and English (UK). Finally, the update brings a few bug fixes and performance boosts.

The update, aptly named iOS 6.1, includes a handful of bug fixes as well as a couple of new features - most notably 4G LTE support for more carriers. Specifically, the update provides LTE support for 36 additional iPhone carriers as well as 23 more iPad carriers around the world. iOS 6.1 also gives Siri the ability to purchase movie tickets in the US through Fandango while iTunes Match subscribers can once again download individual tracks to their iOS devices from iCloud. This feature existed early on but was recently removed in a software update. iOS 6.1 is available now through iTunes or as an over-the-air update for iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, third and fourth generation iPads, iPad mini, iPad 2 and fourth and fifth generations iPod touch.

US$13,580) to the first person who breaks it.
  • BlackBerry 10 to Reach U.S. Stores in March - The Z10 is the monoblock touch phone that has a 4.2-inch screen. Think of it as a PlayBook Mini. It has a simple design that's very reminiscent of the PlayBook with its corners and edges. It is conservative, which is what we've come to expect from RIM and its devices. It certainly doesn't look cheap, and the overall impression it leaves is a good one.

  • HBO Go coming to Apple TV in first half of 2013 - Apple TV owners might be able to access more than 600 hours worth of HBO  movies and TV shows sometime in mid-2013. According to a report by Bloomberg, the Cupertino-based firm is in talks with HBO parent company Time Warner about a potential deal, but nothing has been finalized yet. The service is already available as iPad, iPhone, and Android apps but for whatever reason -- licensing? -- HBO has disabled the option to send video streams to the TV via wireless technologies like AirPlay. Up until now the only living room devices to support HBO Go included the Roku and Xbox 360 (with an additional Xbox Live Gold subscription at around $50 per year) and now Apple is joining the ranks.

The new cards are found under the obvious Gift Cards & Digital category, but as of this writing were not present. As promised alongside last week's release of the Catalyst 13.1 WHQL drivers, AMD has shipped out the first public beta for the next version of their drivers this week, Catalyst 13.2 Beta 3. The latest beta makes a couple of additions that will be of particular interest to hardcore gamers. On the application support side, like NVIDIA's beta release yesterday these are the first drivers that specifically target Crysis 3, itself having just been released in beta form as a multiplayer beta. AMD is citing up to a 15% performance improvement here in scenarios with high degrees of MSAA, while promising further improvements as the game and the drivers both march towards a final state.

  • Intel Announces Gradual Discontinuation of Desktop Motherboards - In an announcement that will likely come as a shock for some, Intel has announced they will be ramping down their desktop motherboard business over the next three years
  • FX Vs. Core i7: Exploring CPU Bottlenecks And AMD CrossFire  - AMD and Intel continue serving up increasingly faster CPUs. But graphics card performance is accelerating even faster. Is there still such a thing as processor-bound gaming? The chaps over at THG take two Radeon HD 7970s, high-end desktop CPUs, and a few games to find out.
  • Nvidia's GeForce Experience PC game optimizer enters open beta - When the closed beta began last month, the GeForce Experience only supported 32 games, and while that number hasn't increased by much, Nvidia has added nine more titles to its database, including Far Cry 3, Mechwarrior Online and Hawken. You'll still need a Fermi or Kepler-based graphics card, though the software now offers limited support for Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors, which weren't backed before. Nvidia says other changes since the closed beta include enhanced game detection logic, support for optimizing games played on 2560x1440 displays, better Chinese, Danish and UK English translations, improved client startup, billboard display, game scan and communication with Nvidia's servers, as well as with various bug fixes.
  • Microsoft Surface Pro Arrives on February 9th, Starts at $899 - The Pro is the 'Windows 8' version of the tablet, meaning it has the power to run all the Windows Store touch-optimized apps as well as your legacy Windows apps for productivity and gaming. So when is the Surface Pro coming? Microsoft has now confirmed the tablet will touch down on February 9th for $899 for a 64GB version, or $999 for the 128GB model. Neither of these configurations come with a keyboard or touch cover, so theat will add you an extra $120 to the mix. While $899 is a lot for a tablet, remember that it also can be used as a "desktop" thanks to the added keyboard cover, though doing so brings the price even closer to $1000. The 500GB package comes with 1TB of bandwidth while the 2TB and 4TB are each allocated 4TB and 8TB. For now the service is accesible via web browser only. That's pretty much it for now. The company hasn't revealed what the individual file size upload limit will be on Mega, and still isn't offering a definite answer on whether users of the now-shuttered Megaupload service will get their old files back -- that's up to the court overseeing the case.

(hx) 03:46 PM CET - Jan,20 2013 - Post a comment / read (5)
RPI Chameleon, a great new project from Carles Oriol, enhances the Pi's time machine like quality, by letting it run emulators for a whole batch of ancient hardware, including the IBM Personal Computer, Atari 2600, Apple II, ZX81, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and Oric-1. It can even run MAME, the arcade emulator, and you can add additional emulators to its menu too. Described by Carles as a "Raspbian remix without the X graphical environment that uses its own launcher to run emulators for old computers, arcades and consoles", the RPI Chameleon is easy to set up and use and you can download a torrent of the required image directly from the Chameleon website.

  • Samsung Cancels Windows RT Tablets Release in U.S. - South Korean technology giant Samsung has revealed that it has canceled plans to launch Windows RT devices in the United States. It previously announced the ATIV Tab, a 10.1-inch device that's powered by an ARM-based processor and Windows RT. However, Mike Abary, Samsung USA’s senior vice president of its PC and tablet divisions, said in an interview with CNET that the firm's retail partners indicated demand for Windows 8-powered devices is modest. The executive also pointed towards the fact that it would take too much time and investment for Samsung to tell consumers about the benefits of Windows RT.

  • Pokki revamps Windows 8 Start menu program; hits 1.5 million downloads - Developer SweetLabs released a Windows 8 version of its popular and free software utility Pokki in October, which adds its version of a Start menu to the desktop UI. In December, the company announced it had 500,000 Windows 8 downloads of Pokki. Today, SweetLabs made two new announcements. One is that Pokki has now seen 1.5 million Windows 8 downloads since its launch and the other is that the software program has received a major UI revamp. SweetLabs says the new interface has "improved visual clarity, discoverability, and readability in the Menu." It also has a thinner design for the Start menu that allows for more room to place Windows 8 app icons. SweetLabs also has included a new "Light" version of the UI that will be the default theme from now on, although users are free to switch to the regular theme. OK, I still prefer to use the Start Button for Windows 8 (not for me, for my customers who accidentally bought Windows 8 notebook)
  • Reuters: Oracle Corp to fix Java security flaw 'shortly' - Oracle Corp said it is preparing an update to address a flaw in its widely used Java software after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security urged computer users to disable the program in web browsers because criminal hackers are exploiting a security bug to attack PCs. "A fix will be available shortly," the company said in a statement released late on Friday. The Department of Homeland Security and computer security experts said on Thursday that hackers figured out how to exploit the bug in a version of Java used with Internet browsers to install malicious software on PCs. That has enabled them to commit crimes from identity theft to making an infected computer part of an ad-hoc computer network that can be used to attack websites.
  • Google invests $200 million in Texas wind farm - Google announced another big renewable energy deal on Wednesday, purchasing a $200 million stake in a wind farm in west Texas. Its 70 turbines are located in a particularly windy section of the Texas Panhandle and began spinning full-time in the last few weeks of 2012.

The search giant teamed up with the Chealsea Improvement Company to provide free outdoor access to the internet in the Chelsea, Manhattan neighbourhood, resulting in it being the largest area of Wi-Fi coverage in the city. Part of the motivation for the free internet was likely the fact that Google's New York offices are in this part of the city, as are several new technology companies. Google also provides free Wi-Fi in Mountain View, California, where its headquarters is based.

  • Windows RT jailbreak tool released - The software creator, known as "netham45", released the batch file on the XDA Developers website. The exploit itself works by modifying a specific part of the Windows RT system kernel which then can let users change the minimum signing level to run unsigned apps on the OS. Microsoft has previously stated that while the company does "applaud the ingenuity" that it took to create the jailbreak mod in the first place, they noted that this hack must be used every time a Windows RT system starts up. This is due to the fact that the operation system's UEFI Secure Boot process currently keeps the minimum signing level from being altered on a permanent basis. Microsoft has also said that this mod "... is not a security vulnerability and does not pose a threat to Windows RT users."

At a Dec. 21 press conference, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre incited controversy becoming the latest public figure to blame violence on video games.  Given that criticism it seems pretty peculiar that the NRA would release a new shooter-style game on the iTunes apps store for Apple, Inc.'s (AAPL) iPads and iPhones.  Dubbed "NRA: Practice Range" the app is rather mild in that it does not involve shooting at human targets and there is no blood.
