  • Intel Says Silvermont Chips Will Be 3X Faster - Intel has announced its next-generation mobile processor, code-named Silvermont. The Silvermont processor will take advantage of Intel's 22nm TriGate system-on-a-chip manufacturing process to deliver calculating speeds that are up to three times the rate of its current-generation Atom processor. In addition to the boosted speed, Silvermont processors are energy efficient and draw as little as one-fifth the power of today's Atom chips while still maintaining a consistent output. Intel suggested that the Silvermont chips would be ideal for smartphones and tablets, and that Silvermont will serve as the base for a number of mobile SoC's that Intel plans to introduce this year. Intel's mobile lineup for 2013 includes quad-core Bay Trail SoCs, which are scheduled to arrive in tablets by the 2013 holiday season; and Merrifield SoCs, which will reach Intel's smartphone and tablet hardware partners by the end of the year. The company did not say when the Silvermont chips might reach production or appear in consumer-grade devices.
  • AMD Announces Memory Series Designed with Gamers in Mind -
  • Amazon Jumps the Gun, Leaks 8-inch Windows 8 Tablet - Amazon mistakenly listed an Acer W3-810 which just so happens to be a non-existent Windows 8 tablet with an 8.1-inch 1280x800 display listed at $380 Bucks. The Verge reports that the 1.1 pound tablet listing included a 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2760 (a Clover Trail chip, rather than an upgraded Clover Trail+ or Bay Trail model), 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage, as well as 2MP rear- and front-facing cameras and micro USB and micro HDMI ports. Most of these specs are roughly identical to what we saw in Acer's 10.1-inch Iconia W510, so the W3 should suffice for most basic Metro and desktop apps as long as you're not doing work that requires a fast graphics processor. An Intel Atom Z2760 CPU? Yawn...:

  • Microsoft confirms exploit in Internet Explorer 8 - Microsoft's Security blog states the exploit could in theory be used to allow for a "remote code execution if users browse to a malicious website with an affected browser." Computerworld.com reports that the issue was first identified by the security firm Invincea and has already been used by hackers in attacks directed against the U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Department of Energy. Microsoft is working to create a patch for IE8 that will close this exploit. If users don't wish to upgrade their browsers, Microsoft says some workarounds might help stop the issue. One is to set Internet and local intranet security zone settings to high, and the other is to set up IE8 to prompt users before running any Active Script type of program or to simply disable Active Scripting entirely.
  • Adobe abandons Creative Suite in favour of cloud offerings - Ten years on from launching Creative Suite, its flagship collection of digital editing software, Adobe has decided to abandon it entirely in favour of its online subscription service, Creative Cloud. In the past, the company offered standalone versions of each program, offering incremental upgrades at discounts if users owned previous versions. Now, however, Adobe will force you to subscribe to a $49.99/month service in order to continue receiving major updates. Adobe says Creative Suite 6 (the current edition) will continue to be available for online purchase only, as the company halted sales of boxed copies back in March. Whilst the software will continue to receive major features and incremental performance upgrades, it will not appear in the form of Creative Suite 6.5/7. Instead, all apps will be newly branded as "CC" editions. This includes: Photoshop CC, Dreamweaver CC, Illustrator CC, Premiere Pro CC, Illustrator CC, InDesign CC, and so on.
  • AT&T to Sell 32GB Galaxy S 4 May 10 for $249 - AT&T has announced that it will offer the 32GB variant of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 beginning May 10. The 32GB GS4 will cost $249.99 with a new two-year agreement

  • Investors to Nokia: Switch to Another Road - Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is in the hot seat with investors and took fire at yesterday's meeting from impatient shareholders who are waiting for the company's fortunes to turn around. Elop announced Nokia's plans to abandon Symbian, which he referred to as a burning platform, in February 2011. Elop decided then that Nokia would use Microsoft's Windows Phone platform for its smartphones moving forward. At the time, he predicted that the turn-around would take two years. That time has come and gone, and Nokia's share of the smartphone market is still grim. "You're a nice guy, and the leadership team is doing its best, but clearly, it's not enough," said shareholder Hannu Virtanen to Elop. "Are you aware that results are what matter? The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Please switch to another road."

  • Duuude, Finally: Drones That Deliver Beer - This August, drones will drop payloads all over South Africa's OppiKoppi music festival, and there's a good chance no one will mind. Probably because the payload is beer. Customers thirsty for beer will order beer with their phones, then someone will attach a parachute to a beer, load that beer into an octorotor, and the octorotor will fly overhead, release the beer, and the beer parachutes to the person who ordered it (hopefully). For test flights, the drone is remotely piloted, but the goal is to make the process far more autonomous, with drones flying themselves to coordinates on a GPS delivery grid

TechNews - AMD Launches the FX-4350 and FX-6350 - tech
(hx) 12:56 AM CEST - May,03 2013 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • AMD Launches the FX-4350 and FX-6350 Piledriver CPUs - AMD has refreshed its lineup of FX processors with the launch of the FX-4350 and FX-6350, which are both based on the "Piledriver" architecture, feature an AM3+ socket, and support the "latest instructions including AVX and FMA3." The new CPUs can essentially be viewed as faster and less energy-efficient versions of their predecessors since both the FX-4350 and FX-6350 feature a 400 MHz increase in base clock and 30 W higher TDP than the FX-4300 and FX-6300, respectively.
  • Compromised Apache binaries load malicious code - Researchers at web security firm Sucuri have discovered modified binaries in the open source Apache web server. The binaries will load malicious code or other web content without any user interaction. Only files that were installed using the cPanel administration tool are currently thought to be affected. ESET says that several hundred web servers have been compromised.
  • Google Search 3.0 for iOS Adds Google Now - Google has added its Google Now service to the Google Search application for the iPhone and iPad. In order to use Google Now, iOS device owners will need to download and install the newest version of Google Search. Users can then sign into their Google account and activate Google Now, which offers personalized information, such as local weather, sports scores, and the time it will take to commute home, in a card-like format on the screen. Google Search with Google Now is free to download from the iTunes App Store.
  • Skype video messages now available on Windows - Skype released their video messaging service for iOS, Android and Mac back in February, and now it's finally Microsoft's turn. Starting today, Windows Skype users will be able to send and receive short video messages from their contacts. The new feature was expected and it is available for those that download the latest Skype beta version from the official website. Folks can record and send video up to three minutes long and they will be limited to 20 video messages until they'll be prompted to upgrade to Skype Premium. The new feature is currently only available on Windows 7 and in the desktop version of Skype on Windows 8 but the team does note that video messaging will be hitting the Modern version of Skype shortly.
  • How To Use Google Glass - Google released a new How To Use Google Glass video that is designed to help people get started using the glasses
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 16GB comes with just 8.82GB of free space - The S4 offers a range of storage options, including 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The smallest of these is heavily impacted by the large footprint of pre-installed software, which collectively eats up around 45% of the handset's integrated storage. Of the 16GB of space, just 8.82GB remains for users, with the rest being consumed by the Android OS, and an extensive list of pre-loaded apps, including some of Samsung's own software such as its S Voice, S Translator and S Health apps. Let's try not to overreact here though. This is precisely why Samsung provides a choice of storage options; if that 8.82GB of onboard storage isn't enough for you, then you can always opt for one of the models with more space for your files - and don't forget that the handset offers a microSD card slot to allow you to flexibly extend your storage at a later date.

ABE started life as a short film entry 'Love... and all that' into the Colchester 48 Hour Film Challenge and evolved into an idea for a live action film. The short film is just the beginning of, what will evolve into, a much larger project. ABE was produced by Zero-G Productions, written/directed by McLellan, with a story by McLellan and Sven Hornse.

Oculus Rift Development Kit Hands-on - tech
(hx) 10:57 AM CEST - May,02 2013 - Post a comment
The chaps over at PC Perspective finally got a little hands-on time with an Oculus Rift development kit. Here's a bit:
So how did it all turn out? The technology is still incredibly impressive and I was amazed at how easy the setup, installation and demos were to run. The Tuscany demo provided by Oculus is very minimal but downloading the Unreal SDK and editing a single INI file resulted in several impressive demos like the ones we showed in our YouTube video above. Head tracking works well, the latency *seems* to be pretty good to me, but this is really the only experience I have with recent VR products.

I will say that the low resolution is definitely a barrier for me. Each eye is only seeing a 640x800 resolution in this version of the kit and that close up you can definitely see each pixel. Even worse, this creates a screen door effect that is basically like looking through a window with a screen installed. It's not great but you could get used to it if you had to; I am just hoping the higher resolution version of this kit is closer.

The bad news is that after just a few minutes of use I definitely felt the effects of motion sickness. This was most apparent when I was playing the faster UT3-style map while trying to aim and move at the same time, often in different directions. Ken noticed the same problem in his time with the Oculus Rift. There are many theories on what might fix it including even lower latency head tracking and higher resolution images but nothing has been proven yet. It was also suggested that I just stop being such a girl about it.

Seriously though, this is a major problem not just for me but for VR enthusiasts. How much of the population with have these same problems and how many will be completely comfortable using the Rift? I think as more and more of the kits from the Kickstarter ship we'll get a better picture.

MS IllumiRoom preview for next-generation Xbox - tech
(hx) 06:28 PM CEST - Apr,29 2013 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft has remained fairly quiet about its next-generation Xbox plans and IllumiRoom. The Verge spoke to Microsoft's Eric Rudder at TechForum in early March about IllumiRoom. Rudder and the Xbox team were quick to stress it's simply a proof-of-concept project, but they did share some basic information about how it works. 'The LED is projecting for a frame and then turning it off and Kinect IR is reading those layovers,' said Rudder. 'Then the Kinect turns off for a frame and then the projector goes on and then Kinect will go back and forth.' Rudder described the technology as 'incredibly sophisticated,' but that the experience is 'Oh, my TV got bigger, and I can project on anything because the surface doesn't need to be flat.'

The current prototype uses a Kinect for Windows camera alongside a projector to transfer content onto walls. Kinect captures the color scheme and geometry of the room while the projector displays all of the visuals around the TV. Microsoft says its IllumiRoom system is self-calibrating and designed to work in any living room. There are a variety of ways in which IllumiRoom can add value to games, including by extending the content, highlighting the edges of games, or enhancing select game elements like weapons fire or explosions. Another method involves displaying markers, either for specific elements in a game or other characters in a multiplayer game.

TechNews - Samsung Galaxy S 4 Tested - tech
(hx) 12:11 PM CEST - Apr,27 2013 - Post a comment / read (9)
  • Samsung Galaxy S 4 Review - Though Samsung promised that its octa-core processor would appear in phones this year, the U.S. version of the Galaxy S 4 features a 1.9 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600. Having one quad-core processor is not a letdown because the Snapdragon is ridiculously fast, efficient, and powerful. The 2GB of RAM and excellent 3D rendering never led to moments that I thought that the phone was sluggish. Gaming capabilities are also strong. The Unreal Engine-powered Horn and racing game Riptide both play with great speed. Samsung sells the Galaxy S 4 in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB variants. Samsung's software eats up 6GB of the ROM, so only about 9.7 GB of space is actually available in the base 16GB version we're testing today. This limitation proved troublesome once I downloaded a few games and quickly ran out of space when adding a portion of my music collection. Storage can be increased with a 64GB-capable microSD slot.
  • Verizon Galaxy S4 to Cost $199, Available May 30 - Verizon Wireless announced via one of its official Twitter accounts that the Samsung Galaxy S 4 will be available for preorder beginning April 25. The GS4 will cost $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a new two-year agreement. According to Verizon, the Galaxy S 4 will not reach its retail stores until May 30. Verizon didn't say when it would ship devices ordered through its web site.
  • BlackBerry Makes Skype Available to Q10 - BlackBerry has announced that owners of its BlackBerry Q10 smartphone may download Skype from the BlackBerry World app store. Skype requires BlackBerry OS 10.1. The Q10 ships with BBOS 10.1 installed, and is launching in Canada and other select markets this week. The Q10 isn't expected to reach the U.S until late May. For the time being, BlackBerry Z10 owners will not be able to access or download Skype because the Z10 runs BBOS 10. BlackBerry said that it will update the Z10 to BlackBerry OS 10.1 next month. More details about the minor operating system bump will be provided by BlackBerry during its developer conference scheduled to take place the week of May 13.

How Does The PS4 Differ From A PC? - tech
(hx) 05:49 AM CEST - Apr,25 2013 - Post a comment / read (3)
How does the PS4 differ from a high-end gaming computer? Well, for one thing, one is a game console and the other one doesn't suck :-)
Sony described its upcoming PlayStation 4 as a "supercharged" PC. Powered by familiar x86 architecture manufactured by AMD, PS4 is more like a gaming PC than any previous Sony console. However, while it may use many parts found in high-end gaming PCs, PS4 system architect Mark Cerny argues that PS4 has many unique features that separate it from today's PCs.

"The 'supercharged' part, a lot of that comes from the use of the single unified pool of high-speed memory," Cerny said, pointing to the 8GB of GDDR5 RAM that's fully addressable by both the CPU and GPU. "If [a PC] had 8 gigabytes of memory on it, the CPU or GPU could only share about 1 percent of that memory on any given frame. That's simply a limit imposed by the speed of the PCIe. So, yes, there is substantial benefit to having a unified architecture on PS4, and it's a very straightforward benefit that you get even on your first day of coding with the system."

According to Cerny, PS4 addresses the hiccups that can come from the communication between CPU, GPU, and RAM in a traditional PC. "A typical PC GPU has two buses," Cerny told Gamasutra in a very detailed technical write-up. "There's a bus the GPU uses to access VRAM, and there is a second bus that goes over the PCI Express that the GPU uses to access system memory. But whichever bus is used, the internal caches of the GPU become a significant barrier to CPU/GPU communication--any time the GPU wants to read information the CPU wrote, or the GPU wants to write information so that the CPU can see it, time-consuming flushes of the GPU internal caches are required."

PS4 addresses these concerns by adding another bus to the GPU "that allows it to read directly from system memory or write directly to system memory, bypassing its own L1 and L2 caches." The end result is that it removes synchronization issues between the CPU and GPU. "We can pass almost 20 gigabytes a second down that bus," Cerny said, pointing out that it's "larger than the PCIe on most PCs!"

  • Windows 8.1 is bringing back some familiar parts of Windows 7 - One might theorize that this wrong-headed decisiveness is what led to Steve Sinofsky's departure from Microsoft, and that the current edict to fix things from on high is something that could never have happened with him still in charge. But that doesn't matter. What matters is that Microsoft, is belatedly, is finally listening to feedback from its customers and changing the product as a result. That is, by far, the most alarming thing that didn't happen-Windows division protestations to the contrary notwithstanding-.during the Sinofsky regime. Put simply, Microsoft should have designed Windows 8 this way from the beginning, and didn't because the Windows division was given too much free reign after its Windows 7 successes. And it's doing it now because the leadership that triggered six years of ignoring customer wishes is no longer there. As a result, Windows 8.1 will more closely resemble Windows 7 than the original Windows 8 version. In related news, here's a Windows 8.1 9374 walkthrough video
  • Microsoft Posts Record Profits! - Microsoft has posted record profits for the quarter ending March 31, even after accounting for a $733 million fine paid to the European Commission. Revenue was $20.489 billion, up 18 percent on the same quarter last year. Operating income was up 19 percent, at $7.612 billion. Earnings per share were also up, gaining 20 percent at $0.72. The company announced a dividend of $0.23 per share. Windows Division revenue was $5.703 billion, up 23 percent on the same quarter a year ago. However, $1.085 billion of this was revenue taken in previous quarters for the Windows Upgrade Offer. Excluding this, revenue was $4.618 billion, essentially unchanged year on year. Operating income for the division was $3.459 billion, up 16 percent from third quarter 2012.
  • Apple Stock Plunges to $400 After Supplier Warns of Weak Sales - Apple, which last year bumped the screen size of its iPhone to 4-inches, has largely been coasting on a "if-it-isn't-broken-don't-fix-it" approach to its operating system. While sales were strong last quarter, investors hammered the company's stock, concerned about weakening margins (profitability). For a while it looked like $420 was a solid floor that the stock would resist breaking through. But amid the supplier warning Apple's stock plunged briefly below $400 USD. It is currently trading around $403 USD. Apple has lost over a quarter trillion dollars in market capitalization over the last half year, since hitting a record $700 USD per share last September. Overall, the tech sector was down on Wednesday, but Apple's stock sunk more than most, dipping over 5 percent on the bad news. Rival Google Inc.'s (GOOG) stock is trading around $780 USD, down ~1.5 percent. Google's market capitalization is currently around two-thirds that of Apple, as its stock hovers around record highs of $800 USD per share.
  • Cooking Pot Can Produce 5, 10 Volts of Electricity for Device - A student startup from Utah has created a cooking pot that is capable of generating power through thermoelectricity. Former University of Utah students David Toledo and Paul Slusser created a startup called Power Practical, which offers their cooking pot invention -- the PowerPot. The PowerPot looks like a regular cooking pot that can be used on a camping trip, but it can actually turn heat and water into electricity. The PowerPot captures electrons traveling from the heated pot to the cooler water contained inside, and the greater the difference in temperature, the more electricity produced. Not only can these PowerPots be used to charge smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices on camping trips, but they can also be used in emergency kits and eventually be sent to developing countries, where smartphones are becoming more and more present (yet charging is a nuisance). The PowerPot V costs $149 while the PowerPot X costs $249.
  • The Most Complicated Way to Make a (Mini, Lego) Free Throw - Dubbed the GBC 5 (Great Ball Contraption-5), this self-replenishing ball tosser uses roughly 2,500 pieces in five modules with two motors and a 9V pneumatic pump to continually cycle, split, accelerate, shift, and shoot miniature basketballs around its table top-sized track. A LEGO NXT controller acts as the system's brain and also tracks the number of shots made. If only the Golden State Warriors could hit their free throws as consistently
  • Who Wants to Be a Mars Colonist? - Mars One officials are looking for a few good men for a one way trip to Mars as a private corporate astronaut. To get your foot in the rocket, all you have to do is submit a one minute audition tape ala American Idol and impress the space experts with your willingness to throw your life away millions of miles from your home planet. Now who on Earth could resist such a proposition? :P
  • Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive (video) - It weighs 4,774 pounds, nearly 550 kilograms more than the 3,573-pound SLS AMG GT. The weight difference comes from the heft of the lithium-ion battery array, composed of 12 modules of 72 cells that weigh 1,208.1 pounds. The batteries change the weight balance of the coupe by one percent: the SLS AMG GT is balanced 54/46 front-to-rear, the Electric Drive is 53/47. It's an energetic beast: The 400-volt, liquid-cooled, 60-kilowatt-hour battery is rated at 552 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of immediate torque

  • Panasonic's 20-inch Windows 8 tablet to have 3840x2560 resolution - In a post on its Extreme Windows blog, the company said it showed off the Panasonic tablet as part of last week's National Association of Broadcasters. The blog revealed that the actual resolution of the tablet will be 3840x2560, which is actually slightly larger than the normal 4K resolution of 3840x2160. The blog also said the aspect ratio of the tablet will be 15x10. The blog's author says that he got a chance to play with the Panasonic tablet and claimed that he was surprised at how thin and light it was, despite its 20-inch size, adding, "I would consider it to be a very thin if it were just a display with no PC inside!" There's an image that shows one side of the tablet, which indeed makes the tablet look rather slim
  • Windows 8.1 build 9369 includes ReFS support -What is ReFS? Well, it's a file system that made its debut back in 2012 and builds upon NTFS. The platform brings enhanced support for large volumes and improved reliability for on-disk structures. In addition, the platform ties into existing APIs and "ReFS supports existing Windows and NTFS features such as BitLocker encryption, Access Control Lists, USN Journal, change notifications". While this change will not bring many noticeable improvements to the end user, it's an enhancement to the underlying technology that will deliver improved stability and performance which the end user can appreciate.
  • Metro: Last Light Now Bundled With GeForce GTX Cards - NVIDIA just announced that it will be bundling Metro: Last Light with its GeForce GTX graphics cards.
  • Google reveals Glass specs - one-day battery life - Google has finally published a list of technical specifications for the head-mounted device. Glass features a 640 x 360 display that Google says is the "equivalent of a 25 inch high definition screen from eight feet away," a 5-megapixel camera capable of 720p video, and - as revealed in an FCC filing - audio that comes via a bone conduction transducer. There will be 16GB of flash storage on-board, with 12GB actually usable, and it will sync with "Google cloud storage" - presumably Google Drive. Glass will feature adjustable nose pads in a frame that Google says will "fit any face," and you'll get extra pads in two sizes. As for battery life, Google claims Glass will last up to "one full day of typical use," though notes that certain applications such as video recording and Hangouts will have a greater impact on endurance. While Glass charges over a Micro USB connector, Google encourages owners to use the packed-in USB cable for a "long and prosperous" life. Connectivity-wise, Glass supports 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and is compatible with "any Bluetooth-capable phone," though functionality will vary. The list of specifications also mentions an app called "MyGlass" for phones with Android 4.0.3 and above; this will enable GPS and SMS support. Some of these details were known from our extensive first-hand preview of Google Glass, but we now have more solid information on what exactly to expect from those first units rolling off the production line.
  • These Are the First Videos Being Shot With Google Glass - As you can see, the quality is pretty good, and that shouldn't be surprising considering the camera shoots in 720p. Granted, it's not going to look perfect if you blow it up to full screen, but it's a damn sight better than strapping a webcam to your head or something.
  • Google will deactivate Glasses if you loan them to friends - So you've got your early Explorer Edition Google Glass, but what happens when you get bored of them? Well, if you were thinking of selling them or handing them over to a friend, Google has made sure to stop you in your tracks. In its lengthy terms of service, the company lays out rules against reselling or lending its new specs out without express permission.
  • Outlook.com to add alias support and new international domains - Microsoft confirmed that it will begin rolling out alias support for Outlook.com. The blog also confirmed that Outlook.com will soon support two step authentication, which was reported earlier today. Finally, Microsoft announced that it will add support for support for 32 new international email address domains for Outlook.com users, in order for international users to have an email address that reflects the country they come from. The supported countries include Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam. Again, this support will be rolled out over the next several days.
  • T-Mobile's Galaxy S4 to Require $149 Downpayment - T-Mobile USA today announced that its variant of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 will be available online beginning April 24 and in stores May 1. It will require a downpayment of $149.99 and 24 monthly payments of $20. T-Mobile is only selling the 16GB model, and has no plans to sell the 32GB or 64GB models. In related news, Sprint today announced its specific launch details of the Samsung Galaxy S 4. The GS4 will be available at Sprint stores beginning April 27 and will cost $249.99 with a new line of service or eligible upgrade. Sprint is offering a $100 discount on the GS4's price to new customers who switch their number from a different carrier, which drops the out-of-pocket cost to $149.99. Preorders for the Galaxy S 4 begin April 18. Sprint's Unlimited Everything plans start at $79.99 per month.
  • AT&T Lists April 30 as Samsung Galaxy S4 Ship Date - AT&T has begun accepting preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S 4 on its web site. AT&T is listing the 16GB model for $199.99 with a new contract ($639.99 full price) and a ship date of April 30. No formal announcements about the GS4's availability have been made, however.

  • Will Windows 8.1 allow users to boot to desktop? - Ever since the consumer preview of Windows 8 was available, some users of the operating system have complained that there's no way to boot to the desktop instead of the Start screen. • You can now turn a WordPress blog into a Windows 8 app - Basically, IdeaPress takes the content of any WordPress-based blog and turns it into a Windows 8-based app within minutes. It adds, "IdeaPress employs an easy to use wizard with the end result as being either a Visual Studio solution or an Appx package that you can have directly published onto the Windows Store." A post on Microsoft's Canadian Team blog site this week states that IdeaNotion will give people who turn their WordPress site into a Windows 8 app a $50 Visa Gift Card once the app is published in the Windows Store. The gift card is supposed to be a compensation for the cost of Windows Store Developer Account. The offer is limited to the first 200 people who email IdeaNotion. • Facebook Home and Updated Messenger Hit Android - Facebook has made Facebook Home available to select Android smartphones. Facebook Home replaces the stock launcher on the device with one that presents Facebook content, such as the news feed, on the home screen. Facebook Home is preinstalled on the HTC First, which also happens to go on sale today from AT&T for $99, but it can also be installed on the HTC One X, One X+, One, and Samsung Galaxy S 3 and Note II. Separately, Facebook also updated the Facebook Messenger application for Android devices. The revised Messenger app carries over one of the main features of Facebook Home, called Chat Heads (pictured). With Chat Heads active, Android device owners can keep conversations with friends always at hand by placing a little icon with the friend's head in it on the home screen. Both Facebook Home and Facebook Messenger are free to download from the Google Play Store.
  • Verizon Updates Device Upgrade Eligibility Practices - Verizon Wireless has altered how it will handle device upgrades for customers nearing the end of their contract. Moving forward, customers will not be eligible for discounted upgrade pricing until they reach the end of their 24-month contract. Verizon says this is to better help people understand when they are eligible for new device discounts. Verizon says the first customers to be impacted by this change are those whose current contracts expire in January 2014. As always, customers may purchase a new phone at full price any time they want. Customers who still have credits under the New Every Two program need to use them by April 15 (Monday), which is when they expire. Verizon is also changing how upgrades can be applied to different lines on the same account. Verizon says customers can continue to share upgrades with other lines as long as they are in the same device category. For example, a feature phone upgrade on one line can be applied to get a lower price on a smartphone for a second line, but not on a tablet or a mobile hotspot. Verizon said customers will no longer be able to transfer upgrades to non-phone devices.
  • North Korea Pirates Spy Tools and Porn on BitTorrent -With only a few hundred IP-addresses North Korea's Internet presence is rather limited. Only a choice few are able to connect to the World Wide Web and access all the free information that comes with it. TorrentFreak decided to take a deeper look at the BitTorrent downloads that can be traced back to North Korean IP-addresses and the results are intriguing, yet expected. Aside from spy tools and porn there are plenty of less controversial titles listed as well. "The Complete Home Decorating Idea Book" for example, which may have been out of stock at the local book store. American movies and TV-shows are also hard to obtain in North Korea it seems, but the pirated editions are easily accessible online. "The Following" for example, a TV-show about a psychotic serial killer who leads a cult of serial-killing followers. Or the horror film Death From Above, which features several pro-wrestling stars in the cast.

  • Internet connection not required to play 'Xbox 720' games? - VGLeaks is clarifying that Durango will indeed be always online "like any other device", but it will not be a requirement to play local content and it will not prevent playing used games. In other words, this is meant for downloading stuff like game or social network updates in the background when a net connections is available, but you will still be able to play Xbox games if your broadband is down or you take your console elsewhere. However it's worth noting it's all still unconfirmed. The site notes that the 'always online' rumors likely stemmed from development kits with components requiring network connections to be present all the time, which could explain what some inside sources were saying.

  • The Internet in the U.S. isn't built for an "always on" game console - The personal comments made by Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Orth on his Twitter page (thanks Baal) earlier this week (which were later called "inappropriate" by Microsoft) seem to center on the fact that other electronic devices have to require an power outlet in order to operate. That's 100 percent true. What is also true is that, at least where I live, the power is on nearly all of the time. A few times a year, we get brief power outages that typically last a few seconds. The only time that power goes out for longer than than is if we are having a bad weather event. In any case, power outages are rare. However, without a shadow of a doubt, my local connection to the Internet (via an ISP which I will not name here) has been anything but trouble free for the many years I have subscribed to the service. Just in 2013, I have had issues with staying online that required me to unplug my modem  more than once and, in a couple of cases, calling my ISP to send a signal to reestablish my Internet connection. That doesn't even count the couple of times when my Internet service was down due to outside forces beyond my control that lasted for a couple of hours each.

  • Apple, Android & Windows Tablet GPUs Compared using GL/DXBenchmark 2.7 - Intel's HD 4000 manages to deliver 3x the performance of the PowerVR SGX 554MP4, obviously at a much higher power consumption level as well. The Ivy Bridge CPU used in Surface Pro carries a 17W TDP, and it's likely that the A6X used in the iPad 4 is somewhere south of 5W. The big question here is how quickly Intel can scale its power down vs. how quickly can the ARM guys scale their performance up. Claiming ARM (and its partners) can't build high performance hardware is just as inaccurate as saying that Intel can't build low power hardware. Both camps simply chose different optimization points on the power/performance curve, and both are presently working towards building what they don't have. The real debate isn't whether or not each side is capable of being faster or lower power, but which side will get there first, reliably and with a good business model.
  • HTC One reviewed - If you're just looking for a great Android phone there are quite a few other options at lower price points.  But if you're in the market for the best Android handset this might be the one for you. The battle will be fought out between the HTC One and the Galaxy S4 and you should wait until both phones are on the market so you properly shop for the best price.  If you care a lot about build quality, design and consuming media on your device than the HTC One is probably the best one you can get. Unfortunately it comes with two important caveats: a mediocre camera and the not so great battery life. If those two are important to you then you might look somewhere else.

Battlefield 4 to be Bundled with AMD Cards - tech
(hx) 11:33 PM CEST - Apr,05 2013 - Post a comment / read (3)
Looks like the next wave of AMD cards will come bundled with Battlefield 4.
"[Partnership between AMD and EA DICE on the Battlefield 4] was presented at the Game Developer Conference, and the AMD Gaming Evolved logo already appeared online in the context of the game. You can expect that Battlefield 4 will be part of [future] Never Settle bundles," said Roy Taylor, corporate vice president of global channel sales, said in an interview with Heise.de web-site.

AMD and DICE (an Electronic Arts studio that develops Battlefield video games) demonstrated the content from the forthcoming Battlefield 4 game at the GDC 2013 running on a PC based on the Radeon HD 7990 graphics car, a long-awaited flagship dual-chip graphics solution by AMD.

Given the fact that Battlefield 4 is a multi-platform high-profile title, it is unlikely that it will use AMD's proprietary technologies, such as TressFX, however, since both next-gen consoles are powered by AMD’s graphics engines, it can be expected that the game will be optimized for AMD's GCN architecture which powers AMD Radeon HD 7000-series graphics cards.

At present, AMD provides free BioShock Infinite, Crysis 3, Devil May Cry, FarCry 3, Sleeping Dogs and Tomb Raider with the purchase of select Radeon HD 7800- and Radeon HD 7900-series graphics cards. In the coming weeks, AMD will start to add free SimCity video game to select A10- and A8-series accelerated processing units.

OUYA's calling June 4th its "official launch date," despite Kickstarter backers receiving units starting this month. Essentially, the two month waiting period between Kickstarter boxes and retail availability is being used as a consumer beta, giving OUYA time to adjust its software after getting feedback from early adopters. It's not clear if bundles will be available, but the game console itself and a controller (as well as power and HDMI cables, plus two AA batteries for the controller) are included in the $99 package. BioShock Infinite Performance Tested - tech
(hx) 09:58 PM CEST - Apr,02 2013 - Post a comment / read (1)
The chaps over at Techspot take a further look at BioShock Infinite performance. Their test comprises 24 DirectX 11 graphics card configurations from AMD and Nvidia covering a wide range of prices, from the affordable to the ultra-expensive. The latest drivers have been used, and every card has been paired with an Intel Core i7-3960X to remove CPU bottlenecks that could influence high-end GPU scores. Here's a taster:
Looking solely at the frames per second data for a moment BioShock Infinite doesn't look overly demanding, at least for a DX11 title. For example, at 1680x1050 the GeForce GTX 650 Ti (a $150 card) averaged 41fps and at 1920x1200 the GeForce GTX 660 ($200) averaged 46fps. Although things became quite demanding at 2560x1600 it was still possible to play at 41fps with the GeForce GTX 670.

However, if we look at frame time performance things look a lot different. As we just mentioned the GeForce GTX 660 averaged 46fps according to our frames per second data at 1920x1200. When measuring frame time performance in milliseconds that same graphics card only managed 29fps, a 37% reduction in fps.

It isn't uncommon to see a gap between frame time performance and average frames per second, but we generally observe a smaller 5 – 10 fps reduction with the former. With BioShock Infinite the margins were massive, anywhere from 10 to 30fps.

Case in point, the GeForce GTX 680 averaged 46fps in our frames per second test at 2560x1600. But when we measured frame times in milliseconds we got 40ms which equates to just 25fps, a 46% reduction in performance. It was a similar story with the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition (49% reduction in performance).

It's safe to assume both both AMD and Nvidia will be working on game-specific optimizations in the coming weeks, putting BioShock Infinite performance where it should be. On that note we also feel AMD has a little more work to do than Nvidia, as their GPUs appear to be underperforming even in the frames per second tests.

Putting GPU scores aside for a moment, we found that BioShock Infinite isn't very CPU demanding and in fact it's one of the few games that we have tested in recent times that can be played quite well on a dual-core processor. Those hoping to squeeze more performance out of their gaming rig for BioShock Infinite need only turn to their GPU, as CPU overclocking is unlikely to improve performance.

PS4 & X720 are 3x slower than the GeForce Titan - tech

Nvidia has revealed at this year's GDC that PS4 and X720 are 3x slower than its GeForce Titan card. Nvidia has also released a slide that compares PCs with consoles.(courtesy of 4Gamer). As you can clearly see, at its time of release, Xbox was more advanced than any GPU that was available during that time. When Xbox 360 was launched, it was above all PC GPUs (excluding SLI systems) and it took a while for Nvidia to release the GeForce 8800GTX to reclaim its crown.

  • PS4 Blu-Ray Will Be 3x Faster Than PS3 - Sony unveiled the PlayStation 4 at an event just over a month ago. Their plans for the next generation gaming system include incredible graphics and exclusive content. However, you will have to wait until the Holiday Season 2013 to get your hands on it. In the meantime, Sony's PlayStation 4 spot at the Game Developers Conference helped provide a better idea of what will go into the PS4. More specifically, the new system will be centered around an updated Blu-Ray drive. The new drive will be three times faster than the drive on Sony's PS3. In addition, Sony is planning to remove the 100 friend limit in the PlayStation Network. The new limit has not been announced but Sony is also changing how they will display your name in PSN. Instead of automatically displaying your real name to your friends, you will have to decide which of your friends can see your "True Name".

  • Quantum interaction: 10,000 times faster than light - How fast do quantum interactions happen? Faster than light, 10,000 times faster. That's what a team of physicists led by Juan Yin at the University of Science and Technology of China in Shanghai found in an experiment involving entangled photons, or photons that remain intimately connected, even when separated by vast distances. They wanted to see what would happen if you tried assigning a speed to what Einstein called "spooky action at a distance."

  • ANALYSIS: North Korean Photo Reveals 'U.S. Mainland Strike Plan' - Today North Korea declared itself in a "state of war" with South Korea. Rockets are reportedly on standby to "mercilessly strike" the United States. Pyongyang has progressively cut off various military hotlines that connect it to the US and Seoul, threatened to close the Kaesong industrial complex staffed by workers from both Koreas, and torn up the armistice agreement that ended war between them in 1953.
  • Four reasons not to take North Korea's threats of nuclear war too seriously - North Korean state media says Kim has put nuclear missiles aimed at the US mainland, as well as Hawaii and Guam, on standby. But analysts have long said there’s no evidence the country has missiles with such range, or the ability to mount nuclear warheads on them. Last year Pyongyang showed off what it claimed were intercontinental ballistic missiles, but some arms experts who examined the parade footage think they might have been fakes.
  • North Korea's Military Might - North Korea’s leadership has been using some strong language about willing to start world war 3 and such, but can they. Their military hardware looks impressive if this was the 80's.

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650Ti Boost Review - Last year NVIDIA delivered the GTX 650Ti to provide a product for gamers that wanted to play the latest games but did not necessarily want to break the bank to do it. For that there is the GTX 690 and just released GTX Titan. The GTX 650Ti, meanwhile, proved to be capable of playing the latest DirectX 11 games with some of the eye candy on at a really attractive $150 price point. This made it an attractive upgrade path for those users stuck in older hardware not capable of meeting the needs of games running in a DX 11 environment.

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 With Octa-Core & Super AMOLED HD Coming Soon? - SamMobile is reporting that the Plus tablet will be a high end tablet with a 10.1inch or 11.6inch Super AMOLED HD display. Although the latter choice sounds a bit large, it is still a possibility with pixel resolutions going through the roof. Moving to the inside, SamMobile has confirmed that this tablet will be carrying the full Exynos 5 generation chip. This chip was supposed to be the main feature of the Galaxy S4. However, the North American version was instead loaded with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chip. The new chip, if it is featured in the Galaxy Tab 3 Plus, would offer 8 cores and superior processing ability. Sam Mobile also mentioned that it is highly likely that "Samsung could unveil the Galaxy Tab 3 Plus at IFA 2013 in Berlin, along with the Galaxy Note III". IFA 2013 is scheduled to take place from 6 to 11 September 2013.
  • Former Microsoft executive says Apple has lost its way - According to Bob Herbold, a former chief operating officer at Microsoft, Apple hasn't been the same since Steve Jobs died. Cook, who became chief executive after Jobs' death (and served as acting CEO when Jobs took a medical leave prior to his death), is nothing more than an "administrator" of Apple, Herbold implies in an article he penned for Forbes. Though he doesn't mention Cook by name, Herbold says Apple needs "a visionary leader, not an administrator." "The leader needs to be paranoid about making the core offerings of the organization more exciting and more impactful with its customers," Herbold wrote. "That sounds simple, but doing it with clarity and speed is absolutely necessary. You must avoid any kind of bureaucracy that can water down the impact of your efforts or slow it to a snail's pace."
  • Linux users file EU complaint against Microsoft - The 8,000-member Hispalinux, which represents users and developers of the Linux operating system in Spain, said Microsoft had made it difficult for users of computers sold with its Windows 8 platform to switch to Linux and other operating systems. Lawyer and Hispalinux head Jose Maria Lancho said he delivered the complaint to the Madrid office of the European Commission at 0900 GMT (4 a.m. EST) on Tuesday. In its 14-page complaint, Hispalinux said Windows 8 contained an "obstruction mechanism" called UEFI Secure Boot that controls the start-up of the computer and means users must seek keys from Microsoft to install another operating system. The group said it was "a de facto technological jail for computer booting systems ... making Microsoft's Windows platform less neutral than ever". "This is absolutely anti-competitive," Lancho told Reuters. "It's really bad for the user and for the European software industry."

High inflation can allow the budget traveler to live like royalty, provided that he or she has plenty of hard currency from a stabler economy; say, for example, U.S. dollars. But that's only if you don't mind conflict tourism of the economic-warfare sort.

  • Windows Blue build 9364 shows smaller & larger Tiles - It's looking likely that the build of Windows Blue (9364) that showed up on the web just moments ago is in fact real, as some people have reportedly been able to install the build and demonstrate some of the new features that accompany Blue. Previously we heard that there will be more customizable tile sizes in Windows Blue, and this appears to be true in this build; screenshots have appeared that show both smaller and even larger Live Tiles on the Start screen. • 'Cloud gaming' has a future - just maybe not in the cloud - No matter how fast your Internet connection is or how near you are to the server room actually rendering your game, Grid just won't be 100 percent as smooth as local rendering all of the time. There are too many variables in play—your own home network, your ISP's equipment and wiring, the load on your ISP's network, your distance from the server, and any number of other issues that could impact your experience negatively. Unlike something like Netflix, which can buffer video to mask these issues, cloud gaming needs to be streaming in real time all the time. Now, move the computer doing the rendering from someone else's server room into your own home. The only limiting factor is going to be your own home network. The most unpredictable elements have been removed, and you'll have a much faster connection between your PC and your tablet than you'd be able to get through most Internet service providers.

At 3.5 × 3.5 × 1 inches, it's a bit smaller than the second- and third-generation Apple TV and Western Digital's Play set-top box.
