Nvidia GeForce 326.19 Beta Driver - tech
(hx) 12:21 AM CEST - Jul,19 2013 - Post a comment
Nvidia has released a new set of beta drivers for its graphics cards. This release, numbered 326.19, includes some performance optimizations and adds SLI profiles for a couple of unreleased games. According to Nvidia, the 326.19 betas improve performance by as much as 19% across all GeForces from the 400 series on up. As an example, the company says the GeForce GTX 770 can see an improvement of up to 15% in Dirt: Showdown and 6% in Tomb Raider. Run a couple of GTX 770s together in SLI mode, and performance can go up even further-as much as 19% in Dirt: Showdown and 11% in F1 2012. In addition, Nvidia says it's added SLI profiles for Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Batman: Arkham Origins and also improve SLI performance in Arma 3.

  • Petition wants Microsoft to continue TechNet - Microsoft announced earlier this month that they would be retiring TechNet starting on August 31st, saying they would not accept any new or renewed subscriptions after this date. TechNet has been used by many IT professionals and software evaluators to try out Microsoft's array of products for a relatively cheap yearly price, so this announcement was received poorly by the community. With the move, MSDN becomes the only true subscription service available that gives access to the full array of Microsoft products; however it costs significantly more, as base subscriptions start at $699 as opposed to just $199 for TechNet. The price hike has caused a petition (the second petition to Microsoft this week) to bring back TechNet, or alternatively provide an affordable alternative to MSDN.

Oculus Rift unconvinced by XB1 and PS4 VR potential - tech
(hx) 11:22 PM CEST - Jul,14 2013 - Post a comment / read (2)
With Oculus Rift still in the developmental stage, it's already apparent that the virtual reality device will be choosy as to what it caters to. In particular, Oculus Rift will not be supporting the Xbox One or the PS4 simply because the technology just evolves too slowly. The focus of Oculus Rift will be on the PC and Android markets that move at substantially faster pace of development.
Even Microsoft's decision to harness the power of the cloud to bolster the Xbox One won't be of much use to virtual reality, he says. Microsoft has said that each Xbox One will also have access to cloud-based processing equivalent to roughly three more consoles, which could be used for processing richer backgrounds in games, more realistic reflections and textures, and other detail.

The system has met with keen interest from game developers, but is unlikely to be of use to virtual reality systems like Oculus Rift, Iribe points out, because of the latency involved.

Virtual reality "wants a maximum latency of 20-30 milliseconds from your head moving to the headset updating your eye on screen - what we call motion-to-photon" he explains. "Right now it's at 30-50 milliseconds in the current versions, but we do expect that to come down and reach that 15-20 millisecond "Holy Grail" timing."

  • Western Digital Sentinel DX4000 16TB - The Sentinel is a first in a line of self designed NAS solutions that can be purchased with drives pre-installed in a variety of capacities, varying from a modest 2TB, right up to a whopping 16TB. Unlike other NAS solutions on the market, one of the main features that sets this system apart from the rest is the use of Windows Storage Server 2008 and a auto configuration process during the initial set-up that automatically builds the drives into a RAID5 array - the preferred choice for NAS solutions as this gives the best data security and will ensure no data is lost, should one drive fail during operation.

  • Google Delivering Major New Version of Maps - Google announced that it is making a new version of Maps available to Android devices today, with a new app for iOS devices to follow soon. The overhauled Maps app for Android takes an approach similar to that of the iOS Maps app that Google released late last year. In addition to the user interface changes, Google incorporated a range of new features. Google Maps offers a new Explore tool that lets people see what's nearby without the need to perform an actual search. The information is presented on cards similar to those used in Google Now. Google also improved the navigation tools within the app, with support for more dynamic rerouting around traffic problems. The app also adds more Zagat reviews, user reviews, and will visually incorporate Google Offers into maps as people search through areas where Offers are available. Last, Google is rolling out a new version of Maps specifically for tablets. Google cautions, however, that the new version of Maps loses several features. For example, offline maps is no longer supported, and neither is My Maps. Google said that My Maps will be added back in at a later date. The new Google Maps should be available in the Google Play Store soon. Google didn't say exactly when the iOS version is expected to arrive.
  • Lumia 1020 Windows Phone on AT&T for $299, coming July 26 - Nokia has unveiled and announced the Lumia 1020 for AT&T. The Windows Phone is the latest flagship handset from the Finnish manufacturer, following the Lumia 920, Lumia 928 and Lumia 925. What's important here is the jump to a new group, no longer are we wrapped up in the 9xx series. Specifications wise, the Lumia 1020 sports a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 4.5-inch AMOLED display (with Gorilla Glass 3, PureMotion HD+ ClearBlack, High Brightness Mode, Sunlight readability and Super sensitive touch), PureView 41MP rear shooter (6 lens optics, High resolution zoom 3x, Autofocus, Xenon Flash), 1.2MP HD wide angle front-facing camera, 2000mAh battery and all the usual bells and whistles one would expect from a Nokia Windows Phone.

The bad news? There's a long wait until the enterprise feature pack is ready - Microsoft says it won't be released until the first half of 2014. It will be delivered "as an update" to the OS, meaning that it could arrive as part of the Windows Phone 8.1 'Blue' update, which is now also expected to launch early next year.

  • New MacBook Airs promise "all-day" battery - Apple has unveiled an update to the MacBook Air, promising the battery will last "all-day". Head of marketing Phil Schiller promised that the new models will see the batteries last almost twice as long as their predecessors. According to Apple, the jump will see the 11-inch laptop go from lasting around five hours to nine hours, while the 13-inch model will jump from seven hours to 12. Apple claims that the new models can wake from sleep in one second. They can also be left on standby for up to 30 days without needing to be charged, the company added.
  • Windows 8.1 To RTM By August - Microsoft delivered a public preview of Windows 8.1 on June 26 during its Build conference. There are no more preview/test builds scheduled. The next stop is RTM. Microsoft will make Windows 8.1 available to all Windows 8 and Windows RT users as a free upgrade through the Windows Store.
  • Ultrafast internet service launched by Vancouver startup - A new Vancouver-based internet provider says it will be offering fibre internet at a speed of one gigabit per second - 60 times faster than the Canadian average - for a comparable price to that lumbering average connection. OneGigabit, a small start-up launched by computer networking and telecommunications specialist Eric Kuhnke, says that for $45 to $65 a month, he will be offering speeds comparable to those offered by Google Fiber, and also with no bandwidth caps. Google's blazing-fast internet service caused a buzz in the U.S. when it first launched last summer in Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., for a modest $70 a month. A recent report from internet metrics company Ookla showed the average monthly Canadian internet bill is $54 for an average download speed of just 16.6 megabits per second. A gigabit per second is the equivalent of 1000 megabits per second.
  • Android Bug Discovered, Could Affect Android 1.6 Donut And Later - While we have seen many Android bugs earlier, this one - which has been discovered by Bluebox Labs - is a nasty one it seems, and it's been here for four years making devices running Android 1.6 Donut and later vulnerable to malicious Trojans. The bug, which apparently affects "99 percent" of devices running on Android, allows malicious code to be installed inside an existing program without the knowledge of the user.  According to Bluebox, there is a way to modify an app's APK file without harming its cryptographic signatures. This could allow an attacker to make use of a modified software package to cause the installation of malware. Of course an attacker will not be able to use the Google Play Store to distribute malicious updates, but could make use of third party app stores, phishing emails, or malicious websites to lure unsuspecting users. The malware update recognized as verified could allow an attacker full access to the system for acquiring info about the user, or adding the device into a botnet.

  • FIFA 13 debuts on Windows Phone 8 as Nokia Lumia exclusive - The price for FIFA 13 is a very reasonable $4.99 to download. There are a few technical points to consider before you download the game. One is that it does require a smartphone with 1 GB of RAM, which means that the Lumia 520, 620 and 720 cannot play the game. Another is that there is no online multiplayer in this version. Finally, the file size for the download is a rather hefty 951 MB.

Gamers overwhelmingly prefer 120Hz refresh rates - tech
(hx) 01:36 AM CEST - Jul,09 2013 - Post a comment / read (5)
The chaps over at Hardware.Info have set up a blind test to determine whether gamers prefer playing at 60 or 120Hz on otherwise identical systems. The results were pretty conclusive: 86% preferred the 120Hz setup. Impressively, 88% of the subjects were able to correctly identify whether the monitor was refreshing at 60 or 120Hz. Those who preferred gaming at the higher refresh rate reportedly described the experience as smoother and more fluid. Their improved experience didn't consistently lead to better kill-to-death ratios, though. A higher refresh rate probably won't augment your mad skillz.
When 86 percent of 50 gamers indicate they prefer gaming on a 120 Hz monitor, and 88 percent also correctly identified which refresh rate their monitor had, there's no doubt about it. Gaming on a 120 Hz really does provide a superior experience. During the event we more than once heard participants exclaiming they had to get one of those 120 Hz monitors soon. One gamer really didn't look forward to going back to their own 60 Hz screen.

The added value of a 120 Hz monitor does come at a price, literally. 120 Hz monitors are definitely more expensive than 60 Hz ones, and on top of that, to get the most out of your expensive new 120 HZ monitor, you need a very powerful graphics card. You don't really want to have one without the other.

Next-Gen Tablets Will Have Console-Quality Graphics - tech
(hx) 05:01 PM CEST - Jul,08 2013 - Post a comment / read (7)
According to Electronic Arts' Frank Gibeau, graphics on mobile platforms such as smartphones and tablets, will rival those of consoles in the very near future.
In the near future, the next wave of tablets and phones will have nearly Xbox 360 or PS3 capabilities in terms of graphics," Gibeau said. "Some of our engine technology that used to be console-specific now can, with modifications, be able to power games on tablets and on phones in the near future. We're just getting ready for that.
In May, EA announced Frostbite Go, a mobile version of its Frosbite engine designed for use with iOS and Android.

MS Confirms DirectX 11.2 is a Windows 8.1 Exclusive - tech
(hx) 02:02 AM CEST - Jul,01 2013 - Post a comment / read (3)
Microsoft has announced it will be releasing DirectX 11.2 in time for the release of the Xbox One and Windows 8.1. Now for the bad news: The release will only be for Xbox One and Windows 8.1.
At the BUILD conference running this week, Microsoft has confirmed that it is continuing to work on DirectX with plans to launch DirectX 11.2 in the near future - and promises of new technology to boot. During a keynote session at the conference, Microsoft's Antoine Leblond showed off a new feature to attendees that promises to increase the amount of detail that can be shown on-screen: tiled resources.

Designed to allow a game to use both system RAM and graphics RAM to store textures, Leblond claimed that tiled resources will enable DirectX 11.2 games to vastly improve the resolution of textures displayed in-game. By way of proof, Leblond showed off a demonstration that used a claimed 9GB of texture data - the majority of which was held in system RAM, rather than graphics RAM.

It's a clever trick, and one that could help boost the quality of future PC games - but it's one that will require those who have yet to take the plunge to upgrade their operating systems. Leblond confirmed that Direct3D 11.2 will be the first version of the API to support tiled resources, and that it will be exclusive to Windows 8.1 on the PC as well as featuring in Microsoft's next-generation Xbox One console.

That Microsoft is using an updated version of DirectX as a carrot to encourage those still on Windows 7 or earlier to upgrade should come as no surprise: its predecessor, DirectX 11.1, is a Windows 8 exclusive. The only real surprise is that DirectX 11.2 won't be coming to Windows 8, either, with Microsoft reserving the update for its bleeding-edge Windows 8.1 release due in the autumn.

  • Intel Z87 Motherboard Review with Haswell: Gigabyte, MSI, ASRock and ASUS - The ASUS Z87-Pro sits between a rock and a hard place.  ASUS is one of few motherboard companies that sit on the crest of innovation, coming up with new ideas that ultimately will filter through product ranges in each successive generation.  Obviously the ones coming up with the ideas face the brunt of the cost, but unlike the medicine industry where markups are common if there is a sole solution to your problem, the motherboard market is cut-throat enough that the resellers, system integrators and end users dictate the pace of play with their wallet.
  • Google reportedly working on Android game console - According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Google is working on an Android console as well as a smart watch that runs the operating system. The devices could be released as early as this fall, the report claims, citing unnamed sources. The report doesn't clarify if Google would make the device itself or if it would be made through a third-party hardware provider, a move the company has used extensively with its Nexus brand of smartphones and tablets. The Journal's sources claim the devices are being made in anticipation of similar products by Apple, which has long been rumored to be working on smart watch and television devices that may possibly run iOS apps.
  • Time Warner Cable to offer 300 live channels on Xbox 360 - According to the Los Angeles Times, Time Warner Cable (TWC) has joined forces with Microsoft to launch a TV app for the 8-year old platform. The deal will bring approximately 300 live channels to Xbox 360 users, provided that they are already TWC subscribers and have an Xbox Live Gold membership. Some of the most popular channels will include CNN, Bravo, AMC and Comedy Central. With so many Xbox 360 consoles in the hands of prospective customers, Microsoft is hopeful that the appli
  • Sony Cut The PS4 Camera to Beat Microsoft on Price - IGN claims that Sony beat the Xbox One on price by dropping the camera from the console bundle.
  • Apple Releases Second Beta of iOS 7 - Apple today made available iOS 7 Beta 2 to iPhone and iPad developers. Apple typically releases new betas every two or three weeks leading up to the general release of a major iOS version. The update contains bug fixes and other improvements. The final version of iOS 7 is not expected to arrive until the fall.
  • Apple's upcoming iOS 7 can be navigated using head motion - According to 9to5Mac, an anonymous tipster informed them that the forthcoming iOS 7 operating system could be navigated using head movements. The editorial team then tested the most recent version of the beta software and found the claims to be true. The list of functions that you can complete with just a tilt of the head is rather impressive. You can bring up the home screen, adjust the volume, enable Siri, access the App Switcher, and do everyday actions such as 'tapping' to open up an app or link. While all of this sounds great, the feature is admittedly time consuming and not ideal for those that don't necessarily require it. To make this possible, the iPhone makes use of the front-facing camera that is often used for Face Time. The program loops through all available options or applications, and the user must jerk their head to either the left or right to make a selection.
  • Sony Xperia Z Ultra Hands-On Video - The Xperia Z Ultra has been designed beautifully and, as you can see in the image above, the 6.4 inch Android 4.2 device dwarfs the company's flagship Xperia Z. The good news is that this doesn't mean that it's too big to fit into your pockets, it's just 6.5mm thin. In comparison the Xperia Z measures in at 7.9 mm. The Z Ultra is a bit on the heavy side though, weighing in at 212g (the smaller screened Galaxy Mega 6.3 weighs 198g). As rumored earlier, the ZU is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (2.2GHz quad-core processor), and although it's big, the 1080p display appears to be pretty sharp and bright. As you will see in the video, it supports not just capacitive styluses but also graphite pencils, and it will be certainly fun writing notes on a new handwriting recognition keyboard. On the downside, you get just an 8-megapixel cam rather than the 13-megapixel shooter on the Xperia Z. Also, there's no flash. So, this may not be the device that shutterbugs will be interested in. The speaker position is also a bit annoying with the ZU, though that's a pretty minor issue for most. The device supports LTE, has 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, and a microSD card slot. And it has a 3,000mAh battery and is water and dust proof. The Xperia ZU will launch in Q3.

  • High Speed Footage Reveals an AK-47 Works Even Better Under Water - The AK-47 can be considered the Timex watch of the gun world. It takes a licking, and keeps on ticking, except that by ticking we of course mean firing round after round of ammunition. The automatic machine gun is based on a gas recoil system that uses the hot expanding gases of a bullet being fired to automatically rechamber the next round, and surprisingly, it appears to work even better under water. The folks at Smarter Every Day sunk an AK-47 in an aquarium and, using a high-speed camera, they discovered that the weapon happily still fires while under water. Not only that, it actually reloads itself faster, because H2O can't be compressed. But while the weapon appears to operate more efficiently while submerged, the bullets are also slowed, so unfortunately it's considerably less lethal for hunting mermaids and sharks.

The video showcases the changes to the Start screen, including highlighting its larger and smaller Live Tiles, the deeper customization features, the 'apps only' list and the more improved search features. It also shows off the new 'snap view' modes for the Modern Windows 8 apps that will allow users to run more than just two apps at one time. The video also shows the redesign of the Windows Store for the Windows 8.1 upgrade and, yes, the Start button is showcased at the bottom.

Nvidia launches the GeForce GTX 760 - tech
(hx) 02:30 AM CEST - Jun,26 2013 - Post a comment / read (1)
Nvidia has launched the latest entrant to their 2013 GTX 700 series of high-end gaming graphics cards. The Nvidia GTX 760 isn't anything new. Packing the same die as 2012's GTX 660 Ti (and GTX 670, GTX 680 for that matter), the company has configured the GK104 (Kepler) die such that only 1152 CUDA cores are active, much lower than the 1344 CUDA cores in the GTX 670 and definitely far lesser than the fully enabled GTX 770 with 1536 CUDA cores.
To that end this launch is a great deal like the GTX 770 launch last month, with NVIDIA improving performance, lowering prices, and putting AMD on the defensive all at the same time. Thanks to these performance improvements and price cuts, the GTX 760 ends up coming within 3% of the soon to be retired GTX 670 and easily surpasses the GTX 660 Ti, all the while coming in at a price well below both at $249. Like most mid-cycle upgrades this is more about bringing existing performance levels down to new prices, and to that end NVIDIA has delivered on those goals. Ultimately it's not a new level of performance, but it's a new price for what a few months ago would cost $350 or more.

With that said, like any good refresh the presence of the 700 series and the retirement of the 600 series looks to shake up the market, and once more AMD is going to be on the receiving end here. Rather unlike the GTX 770 versus the 7970 GHz Edition, the GTX 760 is not tied with any AMD product. At 1080p it is clearly ahead of both the stock and boost versions of the 7950, by 13% and 8% respectively. This is by no means a commanding lead and AMD still offers better performance in some cases, but on average the GTX 760 is faster, quieter, and $30-$50 cheaper than AMD's closest competitor.

As a result the competitive landscape is clearly in NVIDIA's favor for the time being. AMD has their Never Settle Reloaded bundle to boost the value of the 7950, and if this was a repeat of the GTX 660 Ti launch – where the two cards were tied – then that strategy would be solid. Ultimately with such a large game bundle only the individual buyer can truly assign a value to AMD's bundle, but in this case we believe AMD can't afford to be slower and more expensive at the same time. At current prices NVIDIA's GTX 760 has AMD beat, in essence repeating the GTX 670 launch by once more undercutting the 7950.

Wrapping things up, having established the GTX 760's current control of the $250 price point let's talk about the wider market for the GTX 760. As a mid-cycle refresh the performance gains over the 600 series won't knock anyone's socks off, but then like most mid-cycle refreshes this isn't a product targeted at existing 600 series owners. Rather this is targeted at buyers looking to upgrade their older 55nm/40nm generation video cards, or with the recent launch of Haswell, putting together a new system outright.

With a $249 price tag the GTX 760 is most straightforward successor to enthusiast cards like the GTX 560 Ti and GTX 460 1GB. In the case of the former, now one full cycle old, the performance gains are solid, with GTX 760 improving on the GTX 560 Ti by about 67%. This isn't exceptional by any means (the GTX 570 to GTX 770 was 75%) but it's about average for a 2 year (generational) improvement. Otherwise for a true doubling we'll have to wait for one more year, as evidenced by the better than 100% performance gains over the 3 year old GTX 460 1GB.

Naturally, instead of lowering some settings, tweaking his PC or overclocking his GPU, that guy suggests him to get a new AMD card, as those cards are said to "be the best for PC gaming these days." TechNews - Samsung ATIV Q Revealed - tech

  • Samsung ATIV Q: The Best Of Two Worlds (Hands-On Video) - Samsung says that their ATIV Q is "addressing consumers" desire to access Android apps on a Windows-based PC, the ATIV Q allows users to experience both Windows 8 and Android (Jelly Bean 4.2.2) on the same device. Users will not only get access to Android apps via Google Play but also be able to transfer files, to share folders and files from Windows 8 to Android, "truly marrying the mobile and PC experiences."  The device will allow you to launch Android from Windows 8, pin Android apps to the Windows 8 start screen, use the same screen to launch Android and Windows 8 apps, and of course access both the Play Store and Microsoft Store. The specs of the device include an Intel Core i5 Haswell processor with HD 4400 graphics, 4GB RAM, a 128GB SSD, and a 13.3-inch display, which "offers 2.8 times higher pixel density (275ppi) than full HD displays", according to Samsung. The whole thing weighs 1.29kg and measures in at 13.9mm.
  • Samsung unveils Galaxy NX Camera and Active Q Tablet - Leading mobile manufacturer Samsung has introduced the Galaxy NX camera and the Active Q, a portable laptop/tablet duo that can switch seamlessly between Windows 8 and Android. According to Fox News, Active Q has a 13.3-inch display with 3,200 * 1,800 pixel resolution. Samsung also announced several new updates to its flagship Galaxy S smartphone line, including mini, active and zoom versions. Samsung's Zoom version is the first smartphone with a 10x optical zoom function. The Galaxy S4 Active version allows the users up to 30 minutes of protection underwater.
  • Best Graphics Cards For The Money: June 2013 - As far as performance goes, the first clear group of GPUs includes the Radeon HD 7870 LE and below. You see a great correlation between speed and cost up to this $250 card. Every dollar you spend yields a commensurate return in performance. In the value-oriented segment, that's exactly what you want to see. Beyond that point, price increases faster than performance, negatively affecting absolute value. Having said that, if you're a hardcore gamer who desires high resolutions and taxing detail settings, cards like the GeForce GTX 670 or 770 will make the difference between playable and unplayable frame rates. Nvidia's GeForce GTX 780 is significantly faster than the Radeon HD 7970 or GeForce GTX 770, but its $650 price point hurts value. The same can be said for the GeForce GTX Titan, with a $1000 sticker that defies it's meager improvement over the 780. In that highest tier, Nvidia's GeForce GTX 690 performs a bit better than the new Radeon HD 7990.

In addition to its signature filters, Instagram will enable 15 second videos, custom cover frames, and image stabilization. The move by the world's largest social network underscores tense rivalry between Facebook and Twitter. Twitter's Vine short form video service, launched in January, has amassed a fast following for its quirky and raw six-second videos.

  • Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 Review: One Flexible Ultrabook - On the upside, Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga 13 (+$1000) is surely thin and lightweight. The satin-finished aluminum system casing is both solid and elegant. The island-style keyboard is above average, the massive touchpad is great, and the IPS-based touchscreen is fantastic. The innovative hinges are sturdy enough to accommodate all four of the Yoga 13's usage modes, making this one truly versatile mobile PC. It runs cool and quiet, and the performance is more or less what we'd expect to see for a system with these specifications. An empty mSATA/min-PCIe port in this form factor are just icing on the cake, right? Unfortunately, since the Yoga 13 isn't openly user-serviceable, getting to these components isn't a job for the timid. And while upgradable memory may seem like a bonus since most models in this size class feature RAM soldered directly to the motherboard, due to the Yoga 13's closed nature, this also loses much of its relevance.

  • Sapphire Demos Radeon HD 7990 Atomic Card - Sapphire is showing off its upcoming watercooled Radeon HD 7990 Atomic at Computex today: You see, while Sapphire has a reference Radeon HD 7990 based on AMD's latest design, it has been cooking up a fully-custom board in the skunkworks. The six-output HD 7990 Atomic 6GB card uses an enclosed liquid-cooling system as found on the ARES II but is presented in a much sleeker form factor than ASUS's offering. It must be noted that the at-show card is a very early sample and Sapphire will refine the tubing, pump and reservoir before limited-run production in a few months. Sapphire declined to discuss frequencies yet indicated that it would certainly be the fastest HD 7990 around. When pushed on price, Bill relayed that the card package - GPU, pre-fitted waterblock, tubing, two-in one reservoir and pump - would likely cost around £1,000. You had better start saving if you're a fan of AMD graphics!

The specifications of 550MB/s reads and 450MB/s writes were hit without a problem and even on incompressible data, speeds were solid. IOPS performance was very good as well, exceeding the 80,000/70,000 reads/writes by a bit to place in the upper portion of the comparison list."

  • The incredible story of a face transplant (video) - For Carmen Tarleton, the day started out normally enough. Tarleton, 45, had errands to run, a piano lesson to get to, a house to tidy. Tomorrow was Valentine's Day, and for the first time in a long time - the first time since the attack five years earlier - she looked forward to spending it with a new boyfriend. And then everything changed. The phone rang, and Tarleton's surgeon gave her the news: after more than a year of searching, doctors were optimistic that they'd finally found her a new face. Less than 24 hours later, at 5AM on February 14th, 2013, Carmen Tarleton was wheeled into an operating room at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, for an experimental procedure that would replace her own scarred, mangled face with that of recently deceased 56-year-old Cheryl Denelli-Righter. If the surgeons succeeded, Tarleton would become just the seventh American patient to undergo a risky, experimental procedure known as a face transplant.

  • Intel Haswell Makes Its Debut: Core i7-4770K Review - In terms of performance the upgrade to Haswell is very reminiscent of what we observed when going from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge: for the most part we saw very minor performance increases. Haswell looked most impressive in our encoding benchmarks where it was 3 to 13% faster. In our battery of application-based it was was 2 - 11% faster than Ivy, while the synthetic benchmark programs showed only minimal margins. Although Ivy Bridge only provided a slight performance increase over Sandy, it was still a welcomed arrival for newcomers to the platform. Ivy Bridge improved efficiency, added a few new features, while it maintained the same price point of Sandy Bridge. Haswell, on the other hand, seems less attractive for desktop users for a simple reason: it is not backwards compatible with Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge. The new LGA1150 socket means those wanting to upgrade to Haswell will need a new motherboard, such as those featured in our review. Thus, performance won't be a driver of desktop user upgrades with a small 13% jump at best. For those coming from much older platforms or an AMD system, then the Haswell socket change won't pose much of an obstacle.
  •  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 700M aims to make gaming notebooks powerful and portable - Not to be outdone by its arch-nemesis AMD, Nvidia has launched a fresh volley of mobile Geforce GTX 700M GPUs, namely the GTX 760M, 765M, 770M and 780M. Nvidia claims its GTX 780M is the fastest mobile GPU in existence, even besting AMD's recently released Radeon HD 8970M -- a chip, if only briefly, stood atop the heap of mobile GPUs fit for gaming. Nvidia claims the 780M can run Bioshock Infinite, Battlefield 3, Farcry 3, Tomb Radier (2013) and Assassin's Creed III at 1080p with settings cranked up to "Ultra".

Boasting a 140 ppi screen, Asus' upcoming monitor should be able to meet the demands of even the most dedicated videophiles once it becomes available next month. The PQ321 offers 176 degree viewing angles on both the vertical and horizontal planes, so users will be able to see the incredibly high resolution display so matter where they are sitting. In addition, the display includes IGZO technology, which helps keep its energy usage to a minimum.
  • Windows 8.1 build 9415 screenshots appear - Screenshots have appeared of a new build of Windows 8.1 - build 9415 - that don't really show a great deal of new features, but nevertheless show the progress of Windows 8.1 as we approach a public Preview release of the operating system. The Chinese build, with screenshots posted on PCBeta, includes the Start button, however it doesn't look like it's visible all the time with the OS instead requiring a mouse-over in the bottom left corner to get it to appear. It's unclear at this stage whether this build of Windows will leak to the pubic, but if it doesn't it won't be too long until we'll have a public version of Windows 8.1 to test; Microsoft is preparing a Preview version for release on June 26th. So Microsoft havent really improved Windows at all then if they are going to continue with hiding features most asked for by users or not incorporating them at all ;-)

  • Justice Department seizes anonymous banking service Liberty Reserve - The Department of Justice in conjunction with the US Global Illicit Financial Team has shut down one of the largest online banking services in the world. Liberty Reserve went dark on Monday evening - the site has since been replaced by a message saying the domain name was seized in accordance with a seizure warrant obtained by the Attorney's Office of New York. Authorities believe the service was responsible for laundering more than $6 billion. The service converted money into an alternative currency known as Liberty Reserve Dollars which could then be exchanged anonymously. As you could imagine, such a service could easily be used for all sorts of illegal activity which is exactly what the indictment claims took place. According to the document, the site processed over $1.4 billion in transactions per year. Funds were allegedly used to facilitate narcotics trafficking, identity theft and malware fraud via shell companies in Australia, China, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Morocco, Russia and Spain. One hacker reportedly said he would lose around $25,000 due to the shutdown.

  • Gigabyte's Brix mini PC to challenge Intel's Next Unit of Computing - The mini PCs measure just 1.2" x 4.2" x 4.5", and they pack ultrabook-class Ivy Bridge processors and plenty of connectivity. Wi-Fi is included along with Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, HDMI, and Mini DisplayPort. The Brix lineup comprises four models, three of which are already listed on Gigabyte's site. The GB-XM1-3537 comes with a Core i7-3537U processor, the GB-XM11-3337 is equipped with an i5-3337U, and the GB-XM12-3227 sports-you guessed it-an i3-3227U. There will also be a lower-end GB-XM14-1037 with a Celeron 1037U processor. All those CPUs have dual cores and 17W thermal envelopes. Only the Core processors can execute four threads via Hyper-Threading, though, and Turbo is limited to the i7 and i5 models. Intel's similarly small Next Unit of Computing doesn't dip into Core i5 and i7 territory. It also lacks 3.0 ports, but the top model sports a Thunderbolt jack.
  • Microsoft analyst says Microsoft should sell off Xbox and Bing - Microsoft just announced the Xbox One game console last week, and the company continues to add new features to its Bing search services. However, a noted financial analyst who has covered Microsoft since the company went public believes it would be better off if it were to sell off one or both of these divisions. GeekWire reports that in a research note to investors today, Nomura Equity Research analyst Rick Sherlund stated that the Xbox business was not "profitable enough" for Microsoft. He suggested selling off that portion of the company to one that has a bigger consumer electronics focus, such as Samsung, or perhaps spinning it off into its own separate company.

  • Google Planning To Build Its Own Wireless Network - Google Inc. is deep into a multipronged effort to build and help run wireless networks in emerging markets as part of a plan to connect a billion or more new people to the Internet. These wireless networks would serve areas such as sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia to dwellers outside of major cities where wired Internet connections aren't available, said people familiar with the strategy. The networks also could be used to improve Internet speeds in urban centers, these people said. Google plans to team up with local telecommunications firms and equipment providers in the emerging markets to develop the networks, as well as create business models to support them, these people said. It is unclear whether Google already has lined up such deals or alliances. A Google spokeswoman declined to comment.

  • Proposed law would make reprogramming cellphone IDs a crime  - Reprogramming the identification number of a cellphone could be punishable with a prison sentence of up to five years under the terms of a proposed federal law introduced Friday. The Mobile Device Theft Deterrence Act of 2013 makes changing the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number in a phone a crime. The IMEI number is a unique identification number in every cellphone and is exchanged when a mobile phone signs on to a mobile network. In an attempt to combat the growing number of violent street robberies of high-end smartphones, carriers have built a database that blocks stolen phones from being reused. The database relies on the IMEI number, so if the number is reprogrammed in a stolen handset, it could bypass the database check and get resold and reused. Reprogramming the number isn't easy, but it also represents a weak point in the battle against these robberies, which now account for close to half of all street crime in several major U.S. cities. While the theft of the phone and the sale of stolen goods both constitute crimes, the electronic reprogramming in the middle doesn't. The new law would change that.
  • AT&T Adds 61-Cent Admin Fee to All Customers - AT&T has added a new administration fee to the monthly bills of all its customers. The fee amounts to 61 cents, which, when multiplied across AT&T's entire customer base, amounts to about $500 million in extra revenue per year for the company. An AT&T spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that the fee is less than that charged by its competitors. It went into effect May 1.
  • Sen. Schumer Reintroduces Cell Theft Deterrent Bill - Senator Charles Schumer of New York today reintroduced the Mobile Device Theft Deterrence Act. The bill was first proposed a year ago, but was never acted upon by congress. The act would make it a federal crime to alter or change the unique device identification or IMEI number of a wireless device. Together with the Federal Communications Commission, U.S. wireless network operators last year created a database of stolen device IDs. The database is used by the network operators to deny voice and data services to stolen devices registered on the list. The impetus behind the database and the Mobile Device Theft Deterrence Act is to make it difficult or impossible to activate stolen devices on wireless networks, which reduces the resale value of stolen phones and curbs the theft of mobile devices.

  • Google Glass apps: everything you can do right now - The chaps over at Verge have tested every Google Glass app so you don't have to. Glass is a slick implementation of the wrong idea. Google has worked so hard at making the device simple that it has succeeded too well - Glass simply can't do anything Google hasn't allotted for. Right now there's little room for innovation by developers, because all third-party apps are trapped in a simple API that's only capable of pushing and pulling data to and from the device. The API could grow, and Glass doesn't have to be this limited forever, but without the ability to process information on the device, most of the true power of apps on smartphones is lost here. Yes, most of the popular apps on mobile devices are games and social services, but the whole point of a wearable computer is that it should open up new opportunities: augmented reality, serendipity, ways to comprehend your surroundings, way to improve interactions with the people in front of you, and at least some sort of notetaking capability beyond sending emails to yourself. A game like Ingress should be Glass' killer app, not Google+ sharing. Services like Google Search and Google Now will have to be smarter, not just simpler, on a device like this.

  • Meet the Man Who Sold a Month-Old App to Dropbox for $100M - When Mailbox sold itself to Dropbox for a reported $100 million or so this March, the month-old iPhone app wasn't even available to the public. People could download the email organizer, but using it required joining a mailing list that stretched to nearly 800,000 names at one point. Mailbox was popular because it provided innovative new ways to organize and clear an inbox. Users can swipe a message to the left to 'nooze' it, a command that instructs Mailbox to resurface the email after a set period of time. Other swipes - hard left, right, or hard right - archive, delete, or file messages. Today, Mailbox is releasing its first new product from within Dropbox, an iPad version of its flagship iPhone app. Future releases will bring Mailbox to Android and enable support for Yahoo mail and other services beyond Gmail.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Review Round-Up - tech
(hx) 11:05 PM CEST - May,23 2013 - Post a comment / read (10)
NVIDIA today introduced the GeForce GTX 780 GPU, the latest evolution in elite-class GPUs, which delivers jaw-dropping performance and silky smooth visuals for the next generation of PC gaming titles -- including Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4. Designed for gaming enthusiasts, the GeForce GTX 780 boasts a massively powerful Kepler GPU with 2,304 cores and 3GB of high-speed GDDR5 memory -- each 50 percent more than its predecessor. The GeForce GTX 780 supports NVIDIA's latest array of gaming technologies, including PhysX and NVIDIA TXAA, while the newest GeForce drivers reduce frame time variations to provide smoother frame delivery and a richer overall experience. And for those gamers who demand the very best, NVIDIA SLI technology -- the industry's preeminent multi-GPU solution -- scales to deliver even higher levels of performance.  The first reviews can be found on TechReport, Techgage, HotHardware, HardOCP, PC PerspectiveOCCverclockers Club, LanOC, Hardware Canucks ,techPowerUP! ,TechSpot , Hexus, Benchmark Reviews, Guru3D and Hardware.Info.
In terms of acoustics, the GeForce GTX 780 is simply awesome. It is easily among the quietest high-end graphics cards we have ever tested. Period. End of story. In real world conditions, the GeForce GTX 780 is somewhat quieter under load than a GTX 680 and is much quieter than a Radeon HD 7970.

Part of the reason for the 780's great acoustics is a new fan speed control alogorithm NVIDIA developed. For the GeForce GTX 780, NVIDIA developed a new fan controller that uses an adaptive temperature filter with an RPM and temperature targeted control algorithm to eliminate unnecessary fan fluctuations that contribute to fan noise. The end result is fewer fan speed fluctuations and a "smoother" acoustic profile.

The performance of the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 graphics card is somewhat mixed in my view. In some cases the GK110 GPU with 2,304 CUDA cores is able to stand out from the Radeon HD 7970 GHz that currently sits on the "not ridiculously priced" graphics card throne and in other cases, it doesn't. Even if we take away the 1920x1080 resolution from our analysis, since no one buying a $650 graphics card should be thinking about buying it if they are only using a single 1080p display, there are some cases where you have to question the performance gaps. At 2560x1600, the GTX 780 is 15% faster in Battlefield 3, 22% faster in Crysis 3, 2% faster in DiRT 3, 18% faster in Far Cry 3, 23% faster in Skyrim and about 1% faster in Sleeping Dogs. Even at 5760x1080, the performance advantage never gets past 21%. For a $220 up charge, that might not seem like huge performance increases.

Interestingly, there is more and more frame time variance creeping up into the results with the GTX 780 and the GTX Titan. This is due to the surge in CPU bottlenecks that occur when you add more and more GPU horsepower to the system. NVIDIA's frame metering technology can really only alleviate the issue when the GPU is the primary bottleneck, so when the other components cause the problem NVIDIA is mostly helpless. AMD's setup seems to have the other problem - when the GPU is the primary bottleneck CrossFire just can't get out of its own way.

In many ways, the GTX 780 is being positioned as a "flagship" device much like the GeForce GTX 690/GTX Titan and the Radeon HD 7990. NVIDIA seems to say "sure it is expensive, but aren't you worth it?" Appealing to enthusiasts' pride is definitely effective and will likely temp quite a few GeForce fans and people that want the best card they can get that is NOT $1000.

If you want talk in terms of percentages, the GTX 780 will run you 44% more than the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition and 47% more than the GTX 680. None of the single card performance results show us a difference in frame rate and gaming experience that quite match up to that so what are we left with? NVIDIA does have better acoustics, they do have better thermals and power consumption, the cards look better (but that is a personal choice) and I do believe that the software stack NVIDIA has is better. From drivers, to multi-GPU support to the new GeForce Experience software, NVIDIA is definitely continuing to invest in PC gaming even if its not on the bundle side.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 isn't the fastest single GPU graphics card on the planet, the GTX Titan is. It isn't the best value in terms of frames per dollar either, that belongs to the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. Instead the GTX 780 sits firmly in between being the best value option and the "best" option so I find it hard to decide who should actually buy it. With a $650 price tag, it doesn't quite hit the "ludicrous" rate of the GTX Titan, GTX 690 and the HD 7990 but the price hike from the GTX 680 and the HD 7970 is not insignificant.

NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 780 is a much harder sell than any previous GeForce launch even though it isn't a bad card in any way. Is it faster than the GTX 680? Yes. Is it faster than the HD 7970? Yup. Is it less expensive than the GTX Titan? Indeed. Those answers, alone, will sell lots of them; but, it can't win the performance per dollar argument that even enthusiasts pay attention to.

Mad Genius Builds Prototype DualShock 3 Controller - tech
(hx) 12:25 PM CEST - May,13 2013 - Post a comment
This is the proof-of-concept prototype of the Mad Genius Motion Capture System working with Skyrim on an XBox360. It is a game controller that can act as a standard controller and/or a motion sensitive controller. It has unprecedented tracking accuracy of +/- 1/100th of an inch. The game controller in the video is only the proof-of-concept prototype. The final version will be wireless--there will be no cables from the controller. Motion gaming can be added to any game, even if the game wasn't written for motion controller. It works with any gaming system--XBox, XBox360, PS1, PS2, PS3, Wii, Nintendo, or PC. Add motion capture to any game, even if it's ten years old! Dig up your old games and play them again in a whole new way!

UPDATE: The time delay between moving the controller and swinging the sword or warhammer is part of Skyrim. It's not a delay in the controller. The controller fires the command as soon as the player has done the motion. The same thing happens when you use the trigger on a "normal" controller. In Skyrim heavier weapons take longer to swing so the warhammer takes longer to swing than the sword. The trigger press on a "normal" controller or the player's motion STARTS the swing. The weapon takes time to move and this is part of the Skyrim software. It's not a delay in the controller response.

  • Samsung to launch 'Android Book' laptops this year - The analyst states that Samsung plans to launch the first such "Android Book" with Jelly Bean, possibly version 4.3 of the mobile OS. He implies that broader plans are under way at Google to optimise Android for notebooks with the next major release, version 5.0, which is widely expected to be called "Key Lime Pie." Recent reports have indicated that Android 5.0 has been delayed, and the analyst appears to suggest that there may have been an earlier plan to launch the first Android Book at Google's I/O conference this month, before development of the OS was slowed. He further states that "some brand vendors, like Samsung, want to move first", forcing them to launch with Jelly Bean. He adds that "shipments will be limited as the current Android OS isn't well supported for laptops."

  • Apple Wants Android Source Code in Battle Against Samsung - Apple has asked the judge overseeing one of its patent-related lawsuits against Samsung to provide it with access to the Android source code from Google. According to Apple, Android "provides much of the accused functionality" in Samsung's infringing products. Apple believes it should have access to that data in order to separate which company's software provides which functions in Samsung's smartphones. Google says that Apple made a strategic decision to leave Google out of this particular lawsuit. As a third party, Google isn't entitled to the same protections that Samsung is. Google thinks providing this info to Apple would provide for future discovery and other details that it wouldn't normally receive. The judge has yet to make a decision on the matter.
