TechNews - VRD = Oculus Rift on steroids - tech

  • Virtual Retinal Display (VRD) beams images onto your eyeballs - Everyone seems to be pretty excited about the Oculus Rift VR headset. The folks at Avegant are working on an even more intriguing head-mounted display. Dubbed the Virtual Retinal Display, the headset eschews LCD screens in favor of a micro-mirror array that beams reflected light directly into the eyes. The current prototype offers a resolution of 1280x800 per eye, but the perceived resolution is supposedly much higher.
  • Microsoft releases special Walking Dead TV commercial for Windows - The clip continues the storyline from the two previous Walking Dead ads, with the young couple who got together thanks to the show and their use of Windows 8. The new commercial shows that the two love-birds are moving in together, with the man using a Lenovo Yoga notebook-tablet PC, running Windows 8.1, to Skype his girlfriend. He walks down to the basement carrying a storage box but then trips and falls to the bottom of the stairs. He then sees what he thinks is a zombie coming to eat him, and freaks out, but it turns out it's just a cardboard cut-out. His girlfriend, naturally, appears at the top of the stairs and takes a picture of this funny moment with her Nokia Lumia 1020 Windows Phone.
  • Fujitsu to launch "Arrows F-02F" tablet with 10.1-inch display - Fujitsu has come up with a new waterproof 10.1-inch tablet named Arrows Tabs F-02F in Japan with NTT DoCoMo. The tablet is equipped with LTE 4.2 and comes with a quad-core 2.2 GHz (MSM8974) processor and 2 GB RAM. The internal memory of the slate is 64 GB but can be increased with the help of Micro SD card. Other features include 1.3 MP camera, NFC, 1Seg TV tuner, and Bluetooth 4.0. The tablet sports a WQXGA 10.1 inch LCD display with a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels with a "Xevic" video engine. The rugged tablet is water and dust proof with a rating of IPX5/8 and IP5X respectively. The massive 9600mAh battery along with other power saving features gives the tablet enough juice to power it for 1450 hours in LTE, about 1500 hours in 3G, about 1250 hours in GSM. Another nifty feature of the tablets is the fingerprint sensor mounted on the front of the tablet. Along with basic authentication unlock feature, the fingerprint sensor can be assigned to different profiles and be used to switch between adult and child mode. The Fujitsu F-02F tablet will be available for ~$200 approx on contract basis and will hit the market shelves by mid-December.
  • Samsung Announces the Galaxy Round with Curved Display - Samsung today revealed the Galaxy Round, an Android smartphone that features a curved display. The Galaxy Round has a 5.7-inch full HD screen that has a slight curve from side-to-side, which makes the device somewhat easier to hold compared to traditional flat smartphones. The Galaxy Round has software features, called Roll Effect and Ground Effect, that take advantage of the curved shape to display information such as missed calls, battery life, and the time/date when the device is tilted on a flat surface. The Galaxy Round's screen may share dimensions with the Note 3, but the device itself is lighter than the Note 3 at 5.43 ounces. It runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Samsung's customized software, including S Voice, S Health, Story Album, and other apps. The Galaxy Round is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 3GB of RAM. It comes with 32GB of built-in storage and supports microSD cards up to 64GB. The main camera rates 13 megapixels and the user-facing camera rates 2 megapixels. Both can capture 1080p HD video. Connectivity options includes GSM/HSPA+/LTE, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, USB 3.0, GPS/GLONASS, and NFC. The Round is 7.9mm thick and packs a 2,800mAh battery. Korea's SK Telecom will be the first operator to offer the Galaxy Round, which goes on sale tomorrow for about $1,000. Samsung did not immediately announce plans to sell the device in the U.S.
  • Leaked video of Nexus 5 prototype - The 7-minute video that was uploaded on YouTube shows a Nexus 5 prototype device which lacks the Nexus branding at the back. The date on the lockscreen shows October 9th, and the video itself highlights the device hardware from all angles and offers the clearest view of the Nexus 5 yet.
  • Early Demand for iPhone 5C Vastly Over-Estimated? - Before the launch of the colorful iPhone 5C, KGI analyst Mingchi Kuo estimated that Apple would ship approximately 17 million units in September. The early figures are in and they're several million shy of that estimate. In fact, Kuo is now saying that Apple shipped "only" 11.4 million iPhone 5C handsets last month. That's still nothing to sneeze at, to be sure, but it does mean that Apple and its retail partners may have been a little overly optimistic about the appeal of the plastic iPhone 5C. Indeed, Kuo is also saying that sales will be lower than his original estimate for the December quarter, falling down to "just" 10.4 million. Again, this is hardly an insignificant figure, but it is 10% lower than what early estimates had it pegged at. What's interesting is that while the flagship iPhone 5S hasn't really received much in terms of advertising, it's the one that is experiencing the shortage of stock. Meanwhile, you can waltz into just about any Apple Store and happily snatch a iPhone 5C off the shelf… and it's the iPhone 5C that has been receiving much of the marketing push.
  • LG Announces G Pro Lite with 5.5-Inch Screen - LG has announced the G Pro Lite, a low-cost, big-screen Android smartphone that competes with the Samsung Galaxy Mega. The G Pro Lite features a 5.5-inch qHD display and a dual-core 1GHz processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage. The G Pro Lite comes with a stylus that is embedded in the phone and a large 3,140mAh battery. It has an 8-megapixel main camera and a 1.3-megapixel user-facing camera. Wireless networking speeds are limited to HSPA, and it also comes with Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, and GPS. According to LG, the G Pro Lite includes many of the user interface features seen on the G2, such as KnockOn for waking the screen, QuickMemo, and QTranslator. The LG G Pro Lite is headed to Latin American markets first, followed by others in Asia, Russia, China, India, and the Middle East. LG did not announce plans to bring the G Pro Lite to the U.S.
  • T-Mobile Says LTE Available Nationwide - T-Mobile today said that LTE 4G can be accessed by 202 million people in 233 markets around the U.S., including 91 of the top 100 metro areas
  • Nikon rolls out their 24.3-meagpixel D610 DSLR - The D610 is a 24.3-meagpixel DSLR that used Nikon's EXPEED 3 imaging engine that's designed to work well with wide tonal ranges as well as speed up transfer to the memory card. ISO options range from 100 to 25,600. Other features include a 39-point auto focus, smarter scene recognition, a new Quiet Continuous Shutter mode a 3.2-inch LCD, 100-percent optical viewfinder and much more. Nikon's put quite a bit of their core technologies into the D610 model to ensure that professionals have optimum settings to work with. Underlying features like Nikon's 3D Color Matrix Metering II 2016 pixel RGB Sensor will help enhance image capture and perhaps bring the very best out of the photos. This is a step up form the previous editions naturally and with a price tag of $1999.95 for just the body, one would expect nothing but the best. Masahiro Horie Nikon's Director of Marketing and Planning is of the opinion that the D610's full frame sensor, expanded depth-of-field control, wide dynamic range, high image quality, low noise, fine color, and low-light capability will deliver just the right kind of sharpness and fidelity to your photos.
  • HTC's Next Smartphone May Include Fingerprint Sensor - HTC is one week away from announcing a new smartphone that has a fingerprint sensor, according to the Wall Street Journal. Citing sources familiar with the company's plans, HTC will debut a device called the HTC One Max, a larger version of the HTC One, on October 15. Apple's iPhone 5s is the only other major smartphone to include a fingerprint sensor. In addition to the fingerprint sensor, the One Max will have a 5.9-inch display and an Ultrapixel camera, as well as Sense 5 features such as Blinkfeed. The One Max, like the One and One mini, will run Google's Android operating system. HTC did not confirm any of the details in the Journal's report.
  • Tactile Rendering of 3D Features on Touch Surfaces - In this project, we develop and apply a tactile rendering algorithm to simulate rich 3D geometric features (such as bumps, ridges, edges, protrusions, texture etc.) on touch screen surfaces. The underlying hypothesis is that when a finger slides on an object then minute surface variations are sensed by friction-sensitive mechanoreceptors in the skin. Thus, modulating the friction forces between the fingertip and the touch surface would create illusion of surface variations. We propose that the perception of a 3D "bump" is created when local gradients of the virtual bump are mapped to lateral friction forces.
  • Ford demonstrates fully autonomous self parking car technology - Parallel parking still remains to be the most challenging part of driving a vehicle for many and they absolutely dread the idea of parking their vehicles in tight spots. Though many high-end cars offer assisted parking technology and it has been with us for quite some time now, but auto-shows frequently demo the real life usability of park assist systems and mock their failures under test. We feel the technology still needs some fine-tuning, but Ford in a fresh attempt has demoed their newly developed completely autonomous self parking technology. Ford touts the system to be so advanced and foolproof that the driver can actually step out of the vehicle and park the car using just a smartphone with the help of an app. The car will automatically search for an optimum spot and notify the driver!
  • Mercedes-Benz TV: Autonomous long-distance drive - The video posted by Mercedes goes on to show how close we are to seeing this long time dream come true. Vehicles have more or less remained the same ever since they were invented but this addition will be a huge leap forward. Though most of us consider driving as pleasure and not a mere necessity, but cases of accidents due to negligent driving are only growing making the need of driverless cars pretty compelling. Engineers at Mercedes are trying to factor every possible angle to make the system foolproof. We might get to witness this technology built into cars as early as 2020.
  • Small cubes that self-assemble -Car Painted With Heat Sensitive Paint - Known as M-Blocks, the robots are cubes with no external moving parts. Nonetheless, they're able to climb over and around one another, leap through the air, roll across the ground, and even move while suspended upside down from metallic surfaces. Inside each M-Block is a flywheel that can reach speeds of 20,000 revolutions per minute; when the flywheel is braked, it imparts its angular momentum to the cube. On each edge of an M-Block, and on every face, are cleverly arranged permanent magnets that allow any two cubes to attach to each other.

What we have for you here is a publicity stunt for the upcoming movie. It's an awesome prank which involves a girl with telekinetic powers freaking out in a coffee shop - terrifying the patrons in the process. In the prank, the girl starts using her telekinetic powers after getting angry with a stranger who knocks over her drink. Both the girl and the stranger are, of course, actors and there are others who are sitting in the cafe who are also in on the act. Fake walls, hidden pulleys, tables which can be controlled remotely, and spring-loaded book shelves are all being used in the prank, and the effect created by these things is pretty awesome, and you can see that in the faces of the unsuspecting customers in the cafe.

  • Latest Chrome Beta for Android Turns Sites into Apps - Google has released a new beta version of its Chrome browser for the Android platform that pushes the boundary between web sites and native applications. Chrome now lets Android devices save oft-visited web sites as home screen shortcuts. When opened, these new web shortcuts will immediately load a fullscreen Chrome for Android window with no tabs, buttons, menus, or the Omnibox. Such sites will appear as separate apps in the app switcher. In order for this to work, however, sites need to add the "mobile-web-app-capable" meta tag. Instructions on how to add this feature to web sites are available from Google's Chromium developer channel. This feature will be rolling out to beta users in Android, Windows, and Chrome OS in the coming days. A Mac version will be included in a future release. Google is also testing a new way to treat open tabs when users are viewing the Omnibox site. Beta testers will be able to see this new treatment in action.

The device stores up to five phone numbers that can be called by children from the FiLIP. The FiLIP can receive text messages from parents, but cannot return messages. In addition to pinpointing location, parents can also set Safe Zones in which their child is allowed to roam via geofencing. If the child leaves the Safe Zone, the FiLIP will send an alert to the parent. Last, the FiLIP includes an emergency function. If kids press-and-hold the red button on the FiLIP, it will send a text message with the child's location to the five numbers stored on the device; automatically begin recording the ambient sound around the watch; call each of the five numbers successively; and, if there's no answer at the five stored numbers, call emergency services. AT&T didn't say exactly when the FiLIP will be available, nor what it will cost.

Inside The Kinect 2.0 - tech
(hx) 07:31 PM CEST - Oct,03 2013 - Post a comment
The Official Microsoft Blog has an interesting article posted today that showcases the capabilities of the Kinect 2.0
Another fascinating feature of the Kinect sensing device in Xbox One stems from its infrared sensor, which can identify objects in a completely darkened room. It can recognize people and track bodies even without any light visible to the naked eye. It can identify a hand pose from four meters away, see the fingers of a child, and remember your identity even minus room illumination.

The wider field of view makes it possible for more players to play an Xbox One game at the same time. With the new console, as many as six players can crowd into one scene. A tall adult can play with a small child without either being squeezed out of the picture. Users get a better experience if they’re standing close by, farther away, or on the periphery of the room.

And the improved hand-pose recognition enables users to interact with the Xbox One just by using their hands—no controller necessary. Thanks to the infrared camera, hand activities can be identified at any illumination, or with none at all. Prior hand-pose solutions were able to deliver speed or accuracy, but not both. The hand-pose solution jointly devised by the Xbox team and Microsoft Research can do both.

Based on his experience with both hand-pose and facial recognition, Krupka was able to find solutions that take into account system-level concerns.

  • Dell drops Windows RT, only Microsoft remains selling the OS - In the fall of 2012, five companies offered tablets or PCs that ran on Microsoft's new ARM-based Windows RT. Now just one company is actively selling such a product and it happens to be Microsoft. This week, the last remaining third party Windows RT hardware provider, Dell, stopped selling its lone product that used the OS, the XPS 10. Dell's online store now lists the XPS 10 as being "unavailable" and offers the Windows 8-based Latitude 10 tablet as a possible alternative. Earlier this year, Neil Hand, the head of Dell's tablet and high-end PC business, stated the company still plans to introduce new Windows RT devices, but so far, it has yet to make any such product announcements.

  • Microsoft adds 200GB SkyDrive option for $100 a year - In a post on the official SkyDrive blog, Microsoft announced the new 200GB storage limit can be bought for $100 a year. The previous storage limit was 100GB, which costs $50. "Just to put that in context: 200 GB is enough space to take a photo, every hour, from the moment someone is born, to the day they graduate from college," the blog post states.
  • Microsoft Keeping Close Eye on SteamOS, Steam Machines -  The Steam Machines initiative, as well as AMD's Mantle API, shows that the gaming industry outside the Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo trio wants change. The good news is that Microsoft and Sony seem to be catching on, shifting over to a "services" focus. You also have to look at what's going on in the Android front. Sure, Android games won't match what's made available on the new consoles, but most of these titles -- if they're purchased through Google Play or Amazon's Appstore -- can be played outside the living room experience on phones, tablets and laptops. Even Nvidia's Shield handheld attempts to merge the Android and PC world, and it can connect to a big-screen TV just like any console. No longer are gamers merely content on playing titles on one stationary screen, and the console trio no longer has dibs on the big screen living room TV.
  • Amazon Kindle Fire HDX tablet comes with more speed, memory - The Kindle Fire HDX is finally here and well and has its share of satisfying goodies for us. But, with great features come a heavy price tag. That's something we can live with, and why not. Starting up, the Kindle Fire HDX, arrives in 7- and 8.9-inch models. At first look, the new tablets look trapezoidal from particular dimensions and we believe it will leave little room for complaints regarding ergonomics. The molded magnesium body makes them feel quite solid and has the 8.9-inch variant weigh 13.2-ounces. Fair, some would claim. The ergonomic angle promises that these do not strain your fingers. Inside, it is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU and runs with Jelly Bean 4.2.2. making the Fire OS a zip through when it comes to speed. And then there's 2GB of RAM to boost it up further. The tablets are adorned with some rather convenient buttons around the display that supports resolutions of up to 1920×1200 pixels (7-inch) and 2560×1600 pixels (8.9-inch), respectively. The latter touching an impressive 339 pixels per inch, surpassing the Apple and Nexus displays. Other major boosts some may appreciate in the new HDX versions include a 11-hour battery life, a Mayday button that makes a human head appear asking you how he or she can help you (actual technician support with remote screen sharing), better gaming thanks to Fire OS3, pinning of apps and more, threaded emailing, enterprise security features and a lot more.
  • Samsung Smartphone With Curved Display Coming In October - Today's smartphones are certainly impressive, but what we are so excited about at the moment will feel like nothing when compared to what's going to be in our hands sometime in the future. Apart from being more powerful, mobile phones and tablets of the future should be a whole lot different in design, equipped with curved displays screens, which are bendable and foldable. Samsung's upcoming smartphone could just be the beginning. According to D.J. Lee, Samsung's mobile business head of strategic marketing, who was talking at the launch event of the Note 3 in Seoul, "We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October". No other details were provided about the upcoming smartphone. We don't have an exact release date, and no hints about which OS the phone will run. No clues about the pricing as well.
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition Coming Soon - If you are looking to pick up the latest Samsung 10-incher, you'll be happy to know that Sammy has announced that the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition will go up for pre-order from select retailers starting tomorrow, with plans to ship by October 10th. What kind of meat does the refreshed Note 10.1 bring to the table? The new Samsung tablet is powered by a 1.9GHz Exynos 5 CPU and 3GB RAM – or a Snapdragon 800 CPU for the LTE model. Other specs include 64GB of storage, microSD, 8MP rear cam, 2MP front cam, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, S-Pen, an 8,220 mAh battery and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Touchwiz. Okay, so we know we can pre-order it and get it by the 10th of October, but how much will it cost? The 16GB model will set you back $549.99, and the 32GB model will cost $599.99. No pricing or release details on the LTE variant just yet.
  • Samsung to introduce ultra-premium Galaxy F series by early next - According to a Korean news website ETNews, Samsung is developing a new ultra-premium flagship line-up named Galaxy F that'll accompany its current top of the line Galaxy S and Note series. Samsung has been constantly under pressure to change the plasticky looks of both the current flagships and until now we had the idea that the next generation Galaxy S5 would be metal bodied. This development is absolutely new and we believe Samsung's choice of branching out with a new line-up is a smart move. Though it's too early to predict what Samsung might experiment with the Galaxy F series but sources suggest it'll feature a full metal body and a premium design accompanied with some of the best features. It might come with an Octa-core Exynos processor and a 16MP rear camera with optical image stabilization. Expect an early next year release for the first device in the line-up and it'll be interesting to see how Samsung prices it. Going by the rumored features and the current trend, it can cost somewhere near $700-$800 without contract.

  • T-Mobile to Drop BlackBerry Smartphones from Stores - T-Mobile said that it plans to cease offering BlackBerry phones at its retail stores. It will continue to offer them online and ship them directly to customers. The company said that, "Keeping stock in the retail distribution system was inefficient," according to David Carey, T-Mobile's executive vice president for corporate services. Carey noted that there is little demand for BlackBerries and most purchases are made by businesses. Earlier this week, BlackBerry announced that it had signed a letter of intent with Fairfax Financial that could lead to a sale of the company to a consortium of private bankers. BlackBerry said it will take a $1 billion charge in order to write-down inventory of unsold Z10 smartphones and slash 4,700 jobs.
  • BlackBerry to Cut 4,500 Jobs, Posts $1B Loss - BlackBerry today announced massive job cuts amidst a large loss for its second fiscal quarter. The company expects to write down $1 billion in unsold Z10 smartphone inventory and post a loss of between $950 and $995 million. The company said it sold 3.7 million devices during its second fiscal quarter, but the bulk of them were its older BlackBerry 7 devices, and not its new BlackBerry 10 smartphones. As a result, it will layoff 40% of its global work force, or about 4,500 employees. After the cuts, BlackBerry will be left with 7,000 employees, about half what it was two years ago. Further, BlackBerry said it plans to make changes to its business. The company said it will "refocus on the enterprise and prosumer market." It will consolidate its hardware portfolio from six devices to four, including two high-end devices and two entry-level devices. BlackBerry announced earlier this month that it is exploring its strategic options, including a sale of the company, whether in parts or as a whole.
  • Inside The Fall Of BlackBerry - Once the giant of the smartphone business, RIM, which was renamed BlackBerry Ltd. in the summer, is now on its knees. The company reported a $965-million fiscal second-quarter loss Friday, primarily because of a massive writedown of Z10 phones that sit, unsold and unwanted, about eight months after they first hit the market.

I'm not sure why people feel the need to explain that it's "no longer possible" for consoles to have better graphics than a PC".
PCPP: In the past, when a new console launched, the graphics were on par, if not even better, than a reasonably well-specced PC of the time. Yet at this year's E3, we noticed that the Xbox One and PS4 demos didn't look as good as the earlier PC demos of the same games. Do you think the lead that consoles had in the past at launch day is over?

Tamasi: It's no longer possible for a console to be a better or more capable graphics platform than the PC. I'll tell you why. In the past, certainly with the first PlayStation and PS2, in that era there weren't really good graphics on the PC. Around the time of the PS2 is when 3D really started coming to the PC, but before that time 3D was the domain of Silicon Graphics and other 3D workstations. Sony, Sega or Nintendo could invest in bringing 3D graphics to a consumer platform. In fact, the PS2 was faster than a PC.

By the time of the Xbox 360 and PS3, the consoles were on par with the PC. If you look inside those boxes, they're both powered by graphics technology by AMD or NVIDIA, because by that time all the graphics innovation was being done by PC graphics companies. NVIDIA spends 1.5 billion US dollars per year on research and development in graphics, every year, and in the course of a console's lifecycle we'll spend over 10 billion dollars into graphics research. Sony and Microsoft simply can’t afford to spend that kind of money. They just don’t have the investment capacity to match the PC guys; we can do it thanks to economy of scale, as we sell hundreds of millions of chips, year after year.

The second factor is that everything is limited by power these days. If you want to go faster, you need a more efficient design or a bigger power supply. The laws of physics dictate that the amount of performance you're going to get from graphics is a function of the efficiency of the architecture, and how much power budget you're willing to give it. The most efficient architectures are from NVIDIA and AMD, and you're not going to get anything that is significantly more power efficient in a console, as it's using the same core technology. Yet the consoles have power budgets of only 200 or 300 Watts, so they can put them in the living room, using small fans for cooling, yet run quietly and cool. And that's always going to be less capable than a PC, where we spend 250W just on the GPU. There’s no way a 200W Xbox is going to be beat a 1000W PC.

Steam Operating System Announced - tech

Valve's big announcement is that they are developing an operating system designed for televisions called SteamOS. In addition to running many games natively, SteamOS will also allow streaming of games from your PC to your television.
As we've been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we've come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself.

SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

  • Best Gaming CPUs For The Money: September 2013 - In this month's update, THG introduces a staggering 14 processors, which mostly include Haswell-based CPUs that trickled down to the Core i3 and Pentium families. There are a few surprises from the Athlon X4 760K, Core i5-3340, and Ivy Bridge-E line-ups.

  • Google Nexus 7: The Android Tablet to Beat - The Nexus 7's Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC is very speedy, making short work of multi-tasking and 3D gaming. But what's even better is that despite a smaller battery, more powerful internals and a slimmer design, the Nexus 7 actually lasts longer than its older brother, thanks to clever software and firmware optimizations. Although the Nexus 7 has only an average camera, no expandable storage and a selection of tablet apps that doesn't quite cut it up against the iOS App Store, the device is still a superb choice. For just $220 you're netting yourself a premium-quality system at an unbelievable price, making it hard to pass up for anyone looking at a portable, multimedia tablet.
  • NVIDIA Unveils the Tegra Note; 7-Inch Android Tablet Powered by Tegra 4 - What we do know about the Tegra Note is mighty impressive, as it's a 7", Android  tablet with a Tegra 4 processor at its core, plus 16GB of built-in storage that can be expanded with a microSD card. Audio is handled by front-facing speakers and NVIDIA PureAudio technology to deliver some of the best sound found on a tablet. The 7" touchscreen is an IPS panel with a 1280x800 resolution, and if that isn't big enough for you then just use the micro HDMI port to connect it to your TV for some big screen action. NVIDIA is including a stylus with both Brush and Chisel tips for writing and painting, with DirectStylus technology for a more responsive experience. There are also some included apps for easy note taking. A five megapixel camera on the rear and a VGA camera on the front sound fairly normal, but the Tegra Note's camera is really something else. NVIDIA's Tegra 4 helps deliver the processing power to the camera, while Chimera computational photography architecture brings some new features to the mix. There's also SmugMug's Camera Awesome app (one of iOS' best camera apps) with exclusive Tegra 4 features, like "tap-to-track" and 100fps video recording for slow-mo playback. If you want some gaming, well there's NVIDIA TegraZone to take full advantage of that Tegra 4 processor. Battery life on the Tegra Note is promised at 10 hours for video playback. The NVIDIA Tegra Note will be launching worldwide, through the partners mentioned earlier, over the next months. Retail pricing on it is an affordable $199.

Chief among them is iTunes Radio, the streaming music service that debuted alongside iOS 7 a couple of days ago. Other new features include AirPlay from iCloud, iCloud Photos and Videos which replaces Photo Stream, iTunes Music Store and conference room mode. AirPlay from iCloud works much like Google's Chromecast in that it allows users to utilize iOS devices to play videos from iTunes in the Cloud. In other words, content will be streamed directly to Apple TV rather than going through your iOS device.  iCloud Photos and Videos allows users to view media that has been added to a shared photo stream on their television. Podcasts are now also available via the set-top box with the ability to sync playlists and favorite stations between the box and other iOS devices. iTunes Music Store support now permits Apple TV owners to browse music downloads, purchase tracks and play them directly through the set-top box.

In the past, the performance made use of a mechanical frame as the dragon, which was controlled by four people from the inside. Then Tradinno, which is fully controlled by radio, was introduced to the festival back in 2010. Tradinno not only weighs in at 11 tons, but this behemoth is also 51 feet tall and has a wingspan of 40ft. The robot has achieved the 2014 Guinness World Record for the World's Largest Walking Robot. The fire coming out of it is fueled by liquid gas. The fuel and 21 gallons of fake stage blood are stored below Tradinno's polyurethane and glass-reinforced outer layer.

  • Microsoft: Trade in your iPad, get a gift card worth at least $200 - Microsoft has begun yet another promotional push. This time, the company is offering a gift card worth at least $200 to anyone who walks into a Microsoft Store and trades in their iPad. The offer will be available in "select Microsoft retail stores" across the U.S. and Canada, and it will run until October 27. To participate, you must bring in a second-, third-, or fourth-gen iPad with its power cord. The device can't be password-protected. Microsoft doesn't say how much it will offer for different versions of the Apple tablet, but it promises a "minimum of a $200 gift card."
  • Seagate to launch 5TB hard disk drives in 2014 - Faster a portion of technology evolves, sooner it risks to hit a plateau. Hard disk manufacturers are currently facing this challenge since 2010 when they managed to fit 1TB of data per platter of a HDD. That's pretty much the maximum limit and now the companies are up against the wall to push the technology beyond the barrier. Western Digital is experimenting with Helium filled drives to tackle the problem. On the other hand, Seagate thinks its new technology called SMR is the answer to all the troubles. Seagate, on Monday, announced it had already sold 1 Million drives using SMR and they'll sell 5TB hard disk drives from 2014 onwards. Not only that they plan to sell 20TB HDDs by 2020.
  • Apple announces low-cost iPhone 5C - Apple has announced the iPhone 5C, a lower cost version of the iPhone with a plastic exterior. Containing similar specs to the iPhone 5, this is still a powerful device, but will sell at mid-range prices. The 5C contains the same A6 processor as the iPhone 5 sported, and an 8MP camera. Coming in five different colour choices, the scratch-proof plastic case is slightly thicker than the iPhone 5 and 5S, but retains a relatively minimal look that Apple are known for. This definitely looks like a cheaper device, however, and is Apple's first plastic covered product since the white Macbook was discontinued.
  • Apple announces iPhone 5S - In addition to announcing the iPhone 5C, Apple also revealed the iPhone 5S at today's media event. As largely expected, the iPhone 5S will have the same size and design and the current iPhone 5 but will feature improved specifications and will be available in three colors: silver, gold, and space gray. Internally, the iPhone 5S will feature a 64-bit A7 processor that will be up to twice as fast at CPU tasks. Another significant new feature is a "Touch ID" capacitive fingerprint sensor built into the home button that's capable of scanning sub-epidermal skin layers. Touch ID can be used to unlock an iPhone and authorize iTunes purchases. The camera in the iPhone 5S will have a new 5-element lens with a f/2.2 aperture and a sensor that's 15% larger than the one in the current iPhone 5 and a dual-LED "True Tone" flash that will adapt to the existing lighting to provide better colors and more accurate skin tones. Other new camera features include a burst mode capable of capturing 10 pictures per second and slow-motion 720p video capture at 120 frames per second.

  • Some Thoughts about the iPhone 5S Camera Improvements - With the iPhone 5S camera, Apple makes a number of interesting changes that I already touched on. Rather than march down the pixel size roadmap to 1.1µm (and beyond that the upcoming 0.9µm step) to either increase pixel count with an equivalent sized sensor, or shrink the sensor and optical stack and maintain the same number of pixels, Apple has chosen a strategy like HTC's and gone the other way. Apple has increased pixel size to 1.5µm (from 1.4µm), while keeping pixel count the same, thus creating a larger sensor
  • Acer Liquid S2 smartphone with 4K video capture - Adding to the line of the phablet market is the Acer Liquid S2. The smartphone comes in with something we're seeing for the first time in this segment of devices, 4K resolution video grabs. Now, ultra-high-definition video does have its demand met by bigger screens but the 6-inch phone we saw at IFA in Berlin this week had us bedazzled. It offers a Gorilla Glass display at 368 ppi, records videos at up to 60 frames per second, offers slow motion 4 times slower (take that you new Apple phones), offers a 13-megapixel f2.2 camera with profile settings, a panorama shot of up to 27-megapixels and a powerful LED flash ring on the rear. Up front, there's a 2-megapixel 1080p camera on the front for video chat. Besides the shutterbug delights we have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, 2GB of RAM, 4G data speeds of up to 150Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, NFC, GPS, a digital compass, 16GB memory, memory card expansion up to 128GB (for the ultra HD videos), Android 4.2.2 and apps including Polaris Office, Swype for typing without taking your finger off the screen, and Evernote. It will be available at the end of October for a yet-undisclosed price.
  • LG G2 unboxing (video) - The LG G2 is a high-end Android smartphone - an embodiment of cutting-edge hardware and precision-polished software, sprinkled with a handful of innovative goodies all over. It comes with top-of-the-line specifications, including a 5.2-inch, 1080p display made using IPS LCD technology, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 chip running at 2.3GHz, and 2GB of RAM. In terms of performance, the device should rank among the best handsets to date. Further down the list we have an advanced 13MP camera that stands out with cool features like optical image stabilization and 1080p video capturing at 60 frames per second. A notable multimedia feature is the support for 24-bit, 192kHz audio.
  • Xbox Music on iOS & Android vs. Windows Phone 8 & Windows 8 - Microsoft released Xbox Music apps for Apple's iOS and Google's Android in order to expand the cross platform capabilities of their music subscription service once known as Zune Pass. The service has been available on Windows, Windows 8, Xbox 360, Windows Phone and the old Zune players since forever, but now you can finally use it on iOS and Android devices as well. How does the experience compare though? Is it just as good or not quite?
  • T-Mobile Gives Unlimited Customers More Hotspot Data - T-Mobile has quietly updated the mobile hotspot options available to customers who choose its $70 Unlimited plan. The original $70 Unlimited plan provided customers with unlimited talk, text, and web, but only 500MB of mobile hotspot or tethering data. If customers wanted to use their smartphone or tablet for tethering beyond 500MB per month, they had to pay additional fees for a 2.5GB or 4.5GB allotments. Now, the $70 Unlimited plan includes 2.5GB of mobile hotspot data. T-Mobile is offering 4.5GB of mobile hotspot data for an extra $30 per month and 6.5GB of mobile hotspot data for an extra $40 per month.

TechNews - Battle of the 4 TB NAS Drives - tech
(hx) 05:23 AM CEST - Sep,07 2013 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • Battle of the 4 TB NAS Drives: WD Red and Seagate NAS HDD Face-Off - Coming to the business end of the review, one must note that both Western Digital and Seagate have put forward convincing offerings for the 1-5 bay NAS market. While the Seagate unit manages to win most of the performance tests, it comes at the cost of an increase in power consumption. 1-5 bay NAS system users looking for top performance at lower price points might do well to take a look at the Seagate NAS HDD. On the other hand, if a cool-running system is the need of the hour and performance is not a major concern, the WD Red makes an excellent choice.
  • Alienware 17 Gaming Notebook Review - The baseline Alienware 17 enjoys an Intel Core i7-4700MQ with a nominal clock speed of 2.4GHz, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M, 8GB of DDR3L-1600, and 750GB of mechanical storage only; at $1,499 this model is cute but not really worth considering. Unfortunately configuring an Alienware isn't as flexible as it used to be, and as a result if you want any of the good stuff, you have to shell out for the $2,299 top base model and then upgrade that.
  • My Passport Slim First 2TB Thin Drive with Metal Case & HW - WD today announced the availability of its My Passport Slim line of portable hard drives, the first thin drives to offer up to 2 TB capacity, a metal enclosure, and 256-bit hardware-based encryption. The included WD SmartWare Pro data protection software allows users to back up their data to their My Passport Slim and keep an extra copy in their Dropbox account for peace-of-mind. The software also lets users back up their Dropbox1 account to the My Passport Slim. These features make the My Passport Slim an ideal choice for protecting, storing, and enjoying digital content on the go.
  • GALAXY at Computex 2013: World Record Breaking Overclocks - Recorded during Computex 2013 with guest overclockers HKEPC OC Lab from Hong Kong, renowned Japanese overclocker Duck San, and NP2Korea Pro OC from Korea. Several world records were set during the show using GALAXY's GeForce GTX 780 HOF (Hall of Fame) Edition.
  • HDMI 2.0 officially announced: 18Gbps bandwidth, 60fps 4K - Arriving just in time for the wide rollout of a new generation of Ultra HDTVs, it adds a few key capabilities to the connection standard. With a bandwidth capacity of up to 18Gbps, it has enough room to carry 3,840 x 2,160 resolution video at up to 60fps. It also has support for up to 32 audio channels, "dynamic auto lipsync" and additional CEC extensions. The connector itself is unchanged, which is good for backwards compatibility but may disappoint anyone hoping for something sturdier to support all of those suddenly-popular dongles. The cables won't change either, as the group claims current high-speed Category 2 wires can handle the increased bandwidth. Some companies have suggested upgrade paths for their UHDTVs already on the market -- hopefully we'll find out more about those plans this week at IFA 2013.
  • Android 4.4 Named 'KitKat'  - Google today announced that the next major version of Android - version 4.4 - will be named KitKat, after the Kit Kat candy bar made by Nestle. Each major version of Android is named for a sweet treat starting with a successive letter of the alphabet. Only major versions get a new name. So while version 4.0 was dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, versions 4.1-4.3 all shared the name Jelly Bean. Therefore version 4.4 is expected to bring more major changes compared to versions 4.2 and 4.3. Google has not announced any details of the new release, hinting only that it will "make an amazing Android experience available for everybody". Google and Nestlé have teamed up on a promo for the new software. Specially-marked Kit Kat bars will come with a code good for the chance to win a Nexus 7 tablet or Google Play store credit.
  • Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch Is a Companion for Note 3 - Samsung today announced the Galaxy Gear, a smartwatch that serves as an accessory to smartphones such as the Galaxy Note 3. The Gear has a 1.63-inch touch screen, 800MHz processor with 512MB of RAM, and uses Bluetooth 4.0LE to communicate with the Note 3. The Gear includes a 1.9-megapixel camera and a speakerphone, both of which are embedded in the wristband. The camera can record 720p HD video, and images and video are synced to the Note 3 for safekeeping. The Gear runs Android from Google, but uses a unique user interface from Samsung that permits users to swipe from screen to screen and from app to app. The Gear runs several native apps, such as pedometer and clock, and also interacts with the Note 3. When paired with a smartphone, it can be used to place phones, view rich notifications, and interact with Samsung's S Voice app. The Gear runs third-party apps as well, and will ship with several from the likes of eBay, Evernote, RunKeeper, TripIt, and others. The Galaxy Gear will go on sale after September 25, but pricing was not announced.
  • Samsung Note 3 Offers Bigger Screen, Smaller Footprint, Updated S - Samsung today announced the Galaxy Note 3, its third-generation phablet with S Pen stylus. The Note 3 increases the screen from last year's 5.5-inch display to 5.7 inches. It also improves the resolution from 1280 x 800 to 1920 x 1080 full HD. Despite the larger screen, the Note 3 is 1mm narrower and 1mm thinner than the Note 2, and also weighs significantly less thanks to the use of polycarbonate in the frame. Samsung also refreshed the design language, giving the Note 3 a faux leather texture to the back cover rather than the glossy plastics of the Note and Note 2. The Note 3 will come in two variants, an LTE version with a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, and an HSPA+ version with 1.9GHz eight-core Samsung Exynos 5 Octa processor. Both will include 3GB of RAM
  • Hands-On: Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Gear - The display is fantastic. It measures 5.7 inches across the diagonal and uses Samsung's Super AMOLED technology. It is a full HD screen, which gives it 1920 x 1080 pixels. Colors pop off the screen and everything looks razor sharp. I honestly can't offer enough praise for the screen, it's that good. As with Samsung's higher end devices, there is a single physical button below the screen for accessing the Home screen. There are capacitive buttons on either side, left is Menu, right is Back. They worked just fine in our time with the device. The rest of the buttons are placed right where you expect to find them. The volume rocker is on the left and the screen lock button is on the right. Both have great profiles and feel very good to use. There's a clean satisfying click when they are pressed that I really like.
  • NSA Prefers Hacking Routers and Switches - The NSA runs a massive, full-time hacking operation targeting foreign systems, the latest leaks from Edward Snowden show. But unlike conventional cybercriminals, the agency is less interested in hacking PCs and Macs. Instead, America's spooks have their eyes on the internet routers and switches that form the basic infrastructure of the net, and are largely overlooked as security vulnerabilities.
  • Nymi Will Replace Your Passwords And Keys (Video) - Nymi has been designed to allow you access into your smartphone or tablet or computer without typing in any password, but the company thinks that the bracelet can be utilized to do much more. All you have to do is attach Nymi onto your wrist and press on the sensor on its top with your finger. You will know that the bracelet is active via LEDs and a vibration motor, which can also be utilized to get notifications from your handset. Nymi is coming with support for Bluetooth 4.0.

  • $7 BILLION: MS Buys Nokia With Change from Cushions, Elop Rumor - Microsoft has purchased Nokia's devices and services unit, bringing the Lumia lineup under the Redmond roof. The move unites Windows Phone 8 with its biggest hardware supporter, giving the company the integrated mobile offering it's been looking for with Surface and other devices. When the deal closes in the first quarter of 2014, Microsoft will pay €3.79 billion for Nokia's business, plus another €1.65 billion for its portfolio of patents. (The €5.44-billion total is considerably less than Microsoft paid for Skype in 2011.) 32,000 people are expected to transfer from Nokia to Microsoft, including 18,300 that are "directly involved in manufacturing."

IllumiRoom: Peripheral Projected Illusions - tech
(hx) 09:12 PM CEST - Sep,02 2013 - Post a comment / read (3)
IllumiRoom is a proof-of-concept system that augments the area surrounding a television with projected visualizations to enhance traditional gaming experiences. We investigate how projected visualizations in the periphery can negate, include, or augment the existing physical environment and complement the content displayed on the television screen. Peripheral projected illusions can change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new physical gaming experiences. Our system is entirely self-calibrating and is designed to work in any room. We present a detailed exploration of the design space of peripheral projected illusions and we demonstrate ways to trigger and drive such illusions from gaming content. We also contribute specific feedback from two groups of target users (10 gamers and 15 game designers); providing insights for enhancing game experiences through peripheral projected illusions.

Originally billed as a back-to-school sale, Microsoft announced a $100 price cut in early August, and the price was supposed to go back up on August 29. However, instead of climbing back up to the original price, Microsoft on Thursday confirmed that the price cut would be permanent
  • Samsung Galaxy Mega for AT&T Tested - Phonescoope takes a look at the Samsung Galaxy Mega for AT&T. People were aghast when Samsung announced the Galaxy Note in 2011 with its 5.2-inch screen. "Crazy," "Huge," "Ridiculous," some called it. The Galaxy Mega, as the name implies, dwarfs the Note with its mega proportions. It has a 6.3-inch screen and a massive 6.6 x 3.46-inch footprint. It's not that much smaller than some tablets. The Samsung Galaxy Mega, while capable and powerful, is not a phone I would ever choose to purchase or use myself. It's simply too big. Where the Note II lives on the edge, the Mega leaps right over into the land of Can't Fit My Hand. Aside from the size, the hardware is decent. It's a good looking phone, though it would be nice if the materials were of slightly higher quality.

It's that simple and multiple users have now confirmed that this works. • Ballmer departure reportedly more sudden than Microsoft stated - When Microsoft announced Steve Ballmer's impending departure from the company last week, it portrayed the chief executive's decision to retire as a carefully planned moment. According to a new report, however, the chief executive's departure is more sudden than originally revealed. AllThingsD, which accurately broke the news of Microsoft's restructuring in recent months, reports Ballmer's decision to leave was sped up because the executive's leadership was viewed as "becoming a very obvious lightning rod," among other reasons. The outlet cites "dozens of people inside and outside" of Microsoft as the sources of the information, with "many" of the unnamed sources being "close to the situation."

  • UK Prisoners Love Tiny Mobile Phones (Video) - Made in China and sold on eBay or Amazon for $60 to $80, the small devices resemble car key fobs and are coming with very low metal content which could allow them to be easily smuggled into prisons past metal detectors. Crazy it may sound but one Anthony Antonellis from New York has implanted a RFID chip between his thumb and forefinger. The tiny RFID chip is enclosed in a capsule and has an antenna. The chip with a storage space of just 1 KB has a rainbow GIF stored in it. Holding a smartphone near the implant reveals the GIF on the smartphone screen. Anthony can change the GIF to whatever he wants but a KB space is too less to store anything considerable. Personally I think it's a stupid idea just to go at such extreme lengths and make a rainbow GIF pop-up on a smartphone.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist Performance, Benchmarked - tech
(hx) 06:27 AM CEST - Aug,29 2013 - Post a comment / read (1)
TechSpot has published a Splinter Cell: Blacklist performance article today for your viewing pleasure. Here's an excerpt:
It doesn't take much graphics power to run Blacklist on ultra if you can get by with a relatively low resolution such as 1680x1050. In that scenario, a Radeon HD 7870 or GeForce GTX 660 will let you lurk in the shadows at 50fps or better for under $200, while the ~$140 HD 7850 and GTX 560 Ti both at least cracked 40fps.

However, you'll probably want to spend a little more than that if you intend to play at 1080p or so, with the GTX 660 and HD 7870 being our recommended minimum with 48 and 45fps. At 55 and 56fps, the GTX 660 Ti and HD 7950 Boost are probably the best value for most gamers, with both costing a little over $200.

Disabling HBAO+ should produce up to a 10fps boost, and we suggest doing so when playing with a lower-end card, particularly if it's not from Nvidia. It remains to be seen whether AMD can boost HBAO+ performance with future drivers, but in the meantime, turning it off lets the HD 7970 GHz Edition overtake the GTX 680.

FXAA is enabled by default when playing on ultra and this improves the image quality significantly without a large performance hit. The difference between FXAA and MSAA isn't as major. While enabling MSAA makes objects appear less blurry, the resulting performance hit isn't always a worthwhile tradeoff. To throw a few quick numbers at you, the GTX 680 and HD 7970 GHz Edition were 32% and 38% slower with MSAA on.

Choosing the best processor to play Blacklist is easy: get something from Intel's Core family. It doesn't really matter which one, as the Core i3, i5 and i7 all got the job done. On the flip side, AMD's FX-8350 and FX-6350 also performed well, providing similar results to the lower-end Core i5 chips, while just about anything branded Athlon II or Phenom II will be underwhelming -- we didn't expect the X6 1100T to average only 45fps.

  • Best Graphics Cards For The Money: August 2013 - The only new card to emerge since last month's update was AMD's Radeon HD 7730. It appeared to be a potentially attractive successor to some of the company's older VLIW5-based 6000-series cards. The crippled Cape Verde LE graphics processor at the heart of Radeon HD 7730 features two render partitions capable of eight full-color ROPs per clock, an aggregate 128-bit memory interface, and six compute units totaling 384 shaders and 24 texture units. As a result, the Radeon HD 7730 is slightly faster than a Radeon HD 6670 with similar memory (DDR3 or GDDR5; both cards come in both flavors), though in certain cases the powerful GCN architecture really does exhibit an advantage over the older VLIW design.
  • LG Display Develops World's First Quad HD LCD Panel for Smartphones - LG claimed to debut an industry first: a 5.5-inch quad high-definition, in-plane switching LCD screen for smartphones. The quad HD resolution display includes 2560 x 1440 pixels, which creates a pixel density of 538 pixels per inch. The panel measures 1.21mm thick and has a 1.2mm bezel. LG claims it is the world's thinnest and slimmest display panel, slimmer even than the one used in the G2. The display also uses a Low Temperature Poly-Silicon (LTPS) substrate to allow for a brightness of 430nit. Quad HD screens are the next logical step after 1080p HD. LG says the high resolution will let smartphones display full-sized web pages with sharp text and no distortion. LG did not say when the new panel might be made available to device makers.
  • Display Calibration 101: Step-By-Step - It's important to remember that the science behind the industry's video standards has two simple directives: display an image that is as true-to-life as possible, meanwhile creating the least amount of eye fatigue for the viewer. By making small adjustments in key areas, even inexpensive monitors can meet this goal. A few years ago, only very expensive professional products played in the accurate color arena. Now, with advances in technology and manufacturing, anyone can have a professional-quality image on their desktop.
  • The Nexus 7 (2013) Review - The original Nexus 7 gave us a decent Android experience at a very low cost. This year ASUS and Google raised the bar for sure. The new Nexus 7 is no longer just a decent tablet at a good price, it's an incredible tablet. With this Nexus, it's clear that Google no longer wants to rely on value alone. The 2013 Nexus 7 redefines what you should expect to pay for a truly great tablet. If you're in the market for an ultra portable tablet, and definitely if you're shopping for an Android tablet in particular, the new Nexus 7 should be at the top of your list.

A second patch will be available next week that covers the rest of the affected products.
  • NSA files: why the Guardian in London destroyed hard drives of leaked evidence - Guardian editors on Tuesday revealed why and how the newspaper destroyed computer hard drives containing copies of some of the secret files leaked by Edward Snowden. The decision was taken after a threat of legal action by the government that could have stopped reporting on the extent of American and British government surveillance revealed by the documents. It resulted in one of the stranger episodes in the history of digital-age journalism. On Saturday 20 July, in a deserted basement of the Guardian's King's Cross offices, a senior editor and a Guardian computer expert used angle grinders and other tools to pulverise the hard drives and memory chips on which the encrypted files had been stored. As they worked they were watched by technicians from Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) who took notes and photographs, but who left empty-handed. The editor of the Guardian, Alan Rusbridger, had earlier informed government officials that other copies of the files existed outside the country and that the Guardian was neither the sole recipient nor steward of the files leaked by Snowden, a former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor. But the government insisted that the material be either destroyed or surrendered.
  • NSA Paid Millions to Tech Giants in PRISM Program - The Guardian is reporting that according to new documentation released, the NSA, using US tax dollars, paid off the mega-techcorps for their cooperation in the data-tapping program. So much for plausible deniability.
  • CIA Confirms Existence of Area 51, Documents Released to Public - Some CIA documents have now been officially released to the public and they fully acknowledge the existence of the site. That's the good news. If you're expecting these CIA documents to talk about extraterrestrials and alien spacecraft, however, you're going to be sorely disappointed. The reports say that Area 51, located 125 miles northwest of Las Vegas, was merely being used as a testing site for aerial surveillance programs. This was mostly during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. So, the CIA is far from acknowledging the now infamous autopsy of our supposed alien buddy here. Instead, they're just saying that they tested some experimental aircraft there (not necessarily reverse engineered from crashed alien spacecraft) and that would explain why people in the area reported seeing UFOs. They were unidentified by the public, but they were just planes. And the desert can play tricks on your eyes and you want to fill in the blanks with sexy info about aliens and spaceships. Of course, there could certainly be more to Area 51 than what these most recent documents reveal, but they're not going to tell us just yet. Or ever, for that matter.
  • AT&T, Sprint, U.S. Cellular to Sell Samsung Galaxy Mega - Samsung has announced that a handful of U.S. network operators will sell the Galaxy Mega 6.3. The Mega, which was announced earlier this year, features a 6.3-inch HD display, 1.7GHz dual-core processor, support for LTE and HSPA+, and 3200mAh battery. It also features an 8-megapixel main camera and a 1.9-megapixel user-facing camera; Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, GLONASS, NFC, and MHL; support for microSD cards up to 64GB; and 1.5GB of RAM. It runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung's TouchWiz software and applications. It will be sold in the U.S. by AT&T, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular. AT&T said the Mega 6.3 will be available beginning August 23 for $149.99 with a new contract or for $24 per month with AT&T Next. Sprint said the Mega 6.3 will be available "later this year," but did not provide pricing. U.S. Cellular has yet to announce pricing and availability.

  • How to Make Perfect Coffee - To understand good coffee, we have to start with how the coffee world measures its brews. Lockhart conducted a series of surveys to determine American preferences. Basically, he surveyed a lot of coffee drinkers and asked them what they liked.

  • Fast And Cheap? Five Sub-$160 Z87 Motherboards For Enthusiasts - Intel might charge a premium for the privilege of owning an overclockable processor, but the company at least deserves credit for exposing enthusiast-class features on mainstream motherboards. With the introduction of its Z87 Express Platform Controller Hub, you get SATA 6Gb/s transfer rates on all six ports, a full battery of six USB 3.0 ports without a bunch of motherboard-down controllers, and an integrated PCI Express controller that supports three links without the need for expensive switches.
  • Acer R7 Review: Something Different - The R7 comes with 4GB of memory soldered onto the motherboard and a single SO-DIMM slot. There's only one model of R7 currently available now, at least in the US (and this is not likely to change for this generation), and Acer populates the SO-DIMM slot with a 2GB DIMM. Storage duties are handled by a 500GB hard drive with a 24GB solid state drive as a caching drive; unfortunately, Acer uses Condusiv's ExpressCache as opposed to Intel's Rapid Storage Technology, so in my experience the boost from the SSD cache isn't as noticeable. Still, it's better than relying purely on HDD storage. Considering the size of the R7, the lack of an optical drive and somewhat small battery are also going to raise a few question marks.
  • Google Chromecast Review - Legit Reviews has taken the Google Chromecast out for a spin and, from the look of things, they really liked it.
  • Windows 8.1 On Its Way, Will Arrive October 18th - Not a big fan of Windows 8 in its current form? Or simply looking forward to additional features that are expected with Windows 8.1? Well you'll be happy to know that the date for Windows 8.1 has now been set to October 18th. For those that already have Windows 8, the update will be available as a free upgrade, which can be snagged via the Windows Store. As for finding Windows 8.1 in-store as an upgrade or pre-installed, no exact date - though you can expect sometime shortly after the 18th. What can we expect with Windows 8.1? An improved lockscreen, the return on the start button (but not the classic bar), enhanced apps, a new version of IE and so much more.
  • Windows 8.1 build 9471 x64 has leaked  - Windows 8.1 build 9471 has leaked which is the first leak in several months for the Windows 8.1 platform. This build, unlike some of the previous builds, is for the x64 architecture. This is the first leak in what has been several dry months for Windows beta enthusiasts but if you are not wanting to risk it by downloading a leaked copy, Windows 8.1 should hit RTM in the next few weeks. Windows 8.1 will bring quite a few new features to the table including the return of the Start button, enhancements to the Modern interface, and a bunch more. Steve Ballmer has referred to Windows 8.1 as a refined blend when making the comparisons of Windows 8.1 to coffee.
  • Windows 8.1 to Ship with Skype Pre-Installed - When Windows 8.1 ships out in October it will come bundled with Skype already pre-installed.

The Pirate Bay team say they never expected the browser to catch on this quickly, while noting that they are determined to provide more anti-censorship tools.
  • HTC One for $30, Plus Bonus $50 GC and Dr. Dre Earphones - The HTC One Android smartphone with Sprint is being offered by the good people at Dell for just $29.99. You'll naturally have to sign up for a new Sprint account and a new two-year service agreement to qualify for this, but considering that an HTC One can cost as much as $899.99 outright, this is a pretty killer deal. As a refresher, the HTC One comes equipped with a 4.7-inch 1080p display (469ppi), a quad-core 1.7GHz Krait processor, Adreno 320 graphics, the 4 “Ultrapixel” camera on the back, a 2.1MP camera on the front, Beats Audio sound enhancement, and your usual array of wireless radios. Those front-facing stereo speakers are pimping too. Getting the HTC One for 30 bucks sounds pretty good, but Dell is sweetening the deal even further by throwing in a $50 Dell promo eGift Card, plus bonus urBeats Earphones by Dr. Dre (valued at $99.00). They're also waiving the $36 activation fee and tossing in free standard shipping via FedEx.
  • ZTE to Sell Firefox Phone on eBay for $80 - ZTE has announced that it will offers its Open Firefox OS phone to U.S. consumers via its official eBay store. The phone, which is based on open web standards, will be sold unlocked for $79.99. The ZTE open offers most of the same features found on today's smartphones, including integration with social networks, GPS and navigation through Nokia' HERE maps, and an app store from which to download applications. According to ZTE, the Firefox Marketplace already has a handful of apps from eBay, Kayak, The Weather Channel, SoundCloud, AOL, Wikipedia, and others.

  • Drone Takes Out Bride And Groom At Wedding - Ok so here's the story. This was shot using a DJI phantom and a gopro camera. This was two days before the wedding at their bridal shoot. This happened towards the beginning. I had done one successful fly by and I brought it around for another pass to make sure it was smooth. I underestimated the lift time and it hit the goom on the side of the face. He had a cut on his cheek and and the side of his head. I felt horrible. Luckily the bride and groom were able to laugh about it after and we continued the shoot. At the request of the bride and groom I put the video online. All though it sucks that this happened. I have decided to own up to what I did, instead of try to hide it from the world.
  • How Astronauts Will 3D Print In Space (video) - So why does NASA plan to launch a 3D printer into space? Astronauts aboard the ISS of course can only use the things that are available on the station. But when much needed parts break or get lost (yes, astronauts apparently lose things up there), sometimes they will have to wait for parts to be send from Earth. And launching multiple spares is not done as they add to the weight. So, if there's a 3D printer out there Astronauts will be able to 3D print equipment and spare parts when needed. The digital blueprints will be provided by NASA or they can simply upload a file from down here. They have already done tests on the 3D printer to see whether or not it is suitable for zero-G, and everything seems to be working fine at the moment.
  • Surge of brain activity may explain near-death experience, study - It's called a near-death experience, but the emphasis is on "near." The heart stops, you feel yourself float up and out of your body. You glide toward the entrance of a tunnel, and a searing bright light envelops your field of vision. It could be the afterlife, as many people who have come close to dying have asserted. But a new study says it might well be a show created by the brain, which is still very much alive. When the heart stops, neurons in the brain appeared to communicate at an even higher level than normal, perhaps setting off the last picture show, packed with special effects.
  • 8-Year-Old Never Ages, Could Reveal 'Biological Immortality'  - Gabby Williams has the facial features and skin of a newborn, and she is just as dependent. Her mother feeds, diapers and cradles her tiny frame as she did the day she was born. The little girl from Billings, Mont., is 8 years old, but weighs only 11 pounds. Gabby has a mysterious condition, shared by only a handful of others in the world, that slows her rate of aging. For the past two years, a doctor who has been trying to find the genetic off-switch to stop the aging process has been studying Gabby, as well as two other people who have striking similarities.
  • 2014 Chevrolet C7 Corvette Stingray (video) - Like its ancestors, and despite endless rumors of a mid-engine successor, the new 2014 Corvette continues to use a front-engine, rear-wheel drive architecture. But in contrast to its predecessors, the all-new model has abandoned much of its heavy steel construction in favor of a lightweight aluminum frame. Thanks to innovative build techniques, including plenty of structural adhesive bonding, the new chassis is 99 pounds lighter than last year's model and 57 percent stiffer.

  • New Google Nexus 7 Drop Test (video) - At first, the device was dropped on its back. While the initial inspection suggested that there were only a few scratches here and there on its plastic rear, it was found out afterwards that the device was not even turning on. Yup, that first fall itself killed the latest Google tablet. But the test was continued to result in a Nexus 7 with cracks on its display and housing. If you are planning to get the impressive new 7 inch tablet, it would be wise to get a good case for it or you can simply be careful while handling it.
  • The 2013 MacBook Air Review (11-inch) - For 2013, the entry level 11" and 13" SKUs have the same basic specs: 1.3GHz Haswell ULT processor, 4GB LPDDR3, and a 128GB SSD. The price difference has dropped to $100, with the 13” falling to $1099—making it feel like a way better deal, considering the extra battery life (12 hours versus 9 for the 11”) and larger, higher resolution display.
  • Apple to Swap iPhone Power Adapters  -Apple has announced the USB Power Adapter Takeback Program, which will allow iPhone (and iPad and iPod) owners to hand over third-party USB adapters for new Apple USB adapters. Apple is not handing out free adapters, however. Rather than swap third-party chargers for Apple chargers directly, Apple will sell an Apple USB charger to people who turn in a third-party charger for $10 (about half price). iPhone owners will need to bring in their device to an Apple Store so the serial number can be verified. The program begins August 16 and will run through October 18. Apple launched the USB Power Takeback program due to injuries caused by faulty third-party chargers used with Apple products. Apple said that its customers' safety its the company's top priority. It will dispose of the turned-on adapters in an environmentally friendly way.
  • Instagram Updated with Better Android Support - Instagram today updated its Android and iOS applications with a handful of new features. The most significant new feature is the ability to import video from the phone's existing gallery. Imported video clips can also be trimmed to fit within the 15-second time limit of Instagram videos. The iOS version of Instagram gains a new auto-straightening feature that will automatically correct the horizon on tilted photos. Last, Instagram Video will work on more Android phones, as the latest version brings with it support for devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. • Xerox scanners/photocopiers randomly alter numbers in scanned - Imagine handing over a complex set of construction plans to your building contractor, fresh off your fancy $12,000 Xerox WorkCentre scanner/copier/printer, only to find there were errors in the blueprints that weren't on the original. Or, imagine passing a set of budget figures to the CFO of your company that weren't the ones you fed into your WorkCentre, one of Xerox's midrange color multifunction machines that, like any scanner or photocopier, is expected to reproduce a picture of the document you put in. As anyone who uses one of these devices in an office, school or home knows, the camera, whether photographing or digitally scanning a document, the camera doesn't lie. Or does it?  That's why German computer researcher David Kriesel was so confused when he removed scanned construction plans from his WorkCentre recently and found the reproduction did not match the original he had put in, but in a strange way: perfectly legible digits on the original had turned into different ones in the copy made by his WorkCentre. Not just fuzzy numbers that could be a 5 or a 6, but a wholesale substitution of one number for another. Somewhere in the machine, the document seemed to enter a parallel universe and produced a non-copy of the original. His machine wasn't using optical character recognition (OCR) to read the document - it was supposed to be just taking a straight picture, and reproducing the plans.

  • Washington Post to be sold to Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon - The Washington Post Co. agreed Monday to sell its flagship newspaper to Amazon.com founder and chief executive Jeffrey P. Bezos, ending the Graham family's stewardship of one of America's leading news organizations after four generations. Bezos, whose entrepreneurship has made him one of the world's richest men, will pay $250 million in cash for The Post and affiliated publications to The Washington Post Co., which owns the newspaper and other businesses. Seattle-based Amazon will have no role in the purchase; Bezos himself will buy the news organization and become its sole owner when the sale is completed, probably within 60 days. The Post Co. will get a new, still-undecided name and continue as a publicly traded company without The Post.
  • Get an incredibly detailed 3D printed mini version of yourself for $300 - Well if the wealthy can have busts and portraits of themselves, I don't see why those that fall under that category can't have it too. Well that reality is becoming a little more affordable now thanks to the good old 3D printers. A company called Twinkind that seems to specialize in 360-degree scanning and 3-D printing technologies is delving deep into printing little statues of people with quite a bit of accuracy in the details. These figurines that can go up to 13 inches look quite realistic in terms of facial expressions, colors and other details and look quite remarkable.

  • The Sun's Magnetic Field is about to Flip - Something big is about to happen on the sun. According to measurements from NASA-supported observatories, the sun's vast magnetic field is about to flip. "It looks like we're no more than 3 to 4 months away from a complete field reversal," says solar physicist Todd Hoeksema of Stanford University. "This change will have ripple effects throughout the solar system." The sun's magnetic field changes polarity approximately every 11 years. It happens at the peak of each solar cycle as the sun's inner magnetic dynamo re-organizes itself. The coming reversal will mark the midpoint of Solar Cycle 24. Half of 'Solar Max' will be behind us, with half yet to come.

TechNews - NVIDIA Shield Tested - tech

  • NVIDIA Shield Review: At the Crossroads of PC and Mobile Gaming - Is NVIDIA Shield fun to use? It absolutely positively is. Android is still however really nascent as a gaming platform, and I wish that Google had given Shield some sort of extra special status or inclusion in the Android 4.3 love with Google Play Games and Shield as the launch vehicle. Instead it feels like NVIDIA was left to carry Shield on its own here, and that's not their fault, I just wish Google would've put two and two together, maybe a Google Play edition Shield even though it's already running stock Android 4.2.1? The games on Android are fun, there just need to be more of them, and the ones that exist need to of a higher caliber to really sell me. Of course there's always the chicken and egg argument – good Android gaming hardware really wasn't available until recently with set top consoles like Ouya or Android-running HDMI dongles, or of course the handheld format that Shield is. I enjoy playing the titles there are, there's just not quite a killer title you can point to yet.
  • Google Chromecast Review - An Awesome $35 HDMI Dongle - For the price, the Chromecast is an amazing device that plays surprisingly well with the services it’s compatible with, and for everything else there’s always that browser tab streaming mode. I’d like to see more services added, but for now I’m totally pleased with how it works, so much so that I already bought a second Chromecast to hook up my second 55-inch TV.
  • Chromecast hacked by GTVHackers - GTVhacker researcher has found his way into Root Access to explore more about the device. The day they got their hands on the dongle, they got cracking at it and found a bug during their initial code audit. The hacker who goes by the name "CJ Heres (@cj_000)" developed a secure boot exploit and hopes it'll help developers explore the platform and build custom software. He found that, contrary to Google's claim, the Chromecast appears to be more Android than ChromeOS.

  • Nexus 7 (2013) - Mini Review - The new Nexus 7 is everything a generational refresh should be – performance goes up dramatically, issues were fixed (storage), features were added (5 GHz WiFi, rear facing camera, Qi charging, high DPI display), and it’s all in a thinner and lighter form factor. Everything about the OG Nexus 7 is better in the 2013 model, all while keeping basically the same price point, and we haven’t even looked at the 4G LTE enabled version yet which adds the right kind of operator-agnostic LTE bands for two regions that I’ve been begging for. It’s undeniable that Google is doing something right with the Nexus program, and along with it, hardware partner ASUS.
  • Microsoft offers touchscreen improvements for IE11 on Windows 8.1 - In the new blog post, Microsoft said that one of the changes concerns the use of hover menus on some websites, which have been designed to be used by a mouse. • The Breakthrough That Might Lead To Computers 1000x Faster - As the technology for making silicon circuitry smaller, faster and less power-thirsty approaches the limits of physics, scientists have tried out many materials in the search for an alternative to silicon. • Sony and Panasonic partnering to create 300GB DVDs - The two companies announced today that they're partnering up to create the next generation of optical disks. And this won't be your granddad's CDs either. The two companies are looking at creating high capacity disks with minimum 300GB of storage. The optical disk has some very nice advantages when it comes to long term memory storage, being resistant to both water and dust, and highly resilient if kept in a proper case. These attributes make a high-density optical disk a very good choice when it comes to backing up large amounts of data. While these disks are designed for professional products and companies, we may eventually see them trickle down to regular consumers. Sony and Panasonic said they're aiming for a 2015 launch for the new optical disk format.

  • Microsoft Excel used as example in new NSA XKeyscore leak - The revelations about just what the National Security Agency is able to do in terms of looking in on anyone's online content continued today; newly leaked documents from a NSA training manual show something called XKeyscore, which has apparently been designed to view online content from almost anywhere, coming from nearly anyone. The Guardian, which has been the recipient of prior NSA information leaks from Edward Snowden, also posted today's documents about XKeyscore, based largely on a manual made in February 2008. In its basic terms, the program lets NSA analysts view the content and the metadata from almost any source. One of the pages from the manual shows an example of how this system works. It states that XKeyscore can view "all the Microsoft Excel spreadsheets containing MAC addresses coming out of Iraq so I can perform network mapping." While a court order is needed to follow a US citizen via XKeyscore, no such court order is needed for foreign targets, even if they are talking with US citizens.  In a statement to The Guardian, the NSA defended the use of XKeyscore, saying it was a part of its "lawful" foreign data gathering activities. It added, "Allegations of widespread, unchecked analyst access to NSA collection data are simply not true."
  • Police to track Moscow metro passengers' SIM cards - The head of police for Moscow's subway system has said stations will soon be equipped with devices that can read the data on the mobile telephones of passengers. In the July 29 edition of "Izvestia," Moscow Metro police chief Andrei Mokhov said the device would be used to help locate stolen mobile phones. Mokhov said the devices have a range of about 5 meters and can read the SIM card. If the card is on the list of stolen phones, the system automatically sends information to the police. The time and place of the alert can be matched to closed-circuit TV in stations. "Izvestia" reported that "according to experts, the devices can be used more widely to follow all passengers without exception." Mokhov said it was illegal to track a person without permission from the authorities, but that there was no law against tracking the property of a company, such as a SIM card.
  • The FBI can remotely activate laptop and Android microphones with spyware - Some of the tools are developed internally at the FBI, while others are contracted and purchased from the private sector. The software allows the Bureau to remotely activate microphones on Android smartphones and laptops, according to one former U.S. official. Both the FBI and Google declined to comment to the WSJ. The report states that the FBI has been developing hacking tools for more than ten years, and typically uses them in cases involving organized crime, child pornography, and counterterrorism. According to a U.S. official, they are not used when investigating hacking cases for fear of discovery and public disclosure by the hacker.

The DALER or Deployable Air Land Exploration Robot comes equipped with wings mounted on shafts that can be locked or rotated. Nvidia GeForce 326.41 Beta - tech
(hx) 09:50 PM CEST - Jul,30 2013 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has unveiled its GeForce graphics driver version 326.41 beta that promises to increase performance by up to 19% compared to the previous 320.49 WHQLed package. As for the changes made, version 326.41 beta fixes the problem with the brightness control that stopped working when the notebook was docked, and the one with the SLI surround that made its performance similar to a single-GPU configuration. Moreover, Nero Blu-ray player doesn't crash and play slow or with mixed colors, GeForce Experience has no problems whatsoever, and FI 2012's game performance is now proper even when SLI is enabled. Furthermore, this latest GeForce driver fixes problems with games such as STALKER Clear Sky, Hitman Absolution, Diablo III, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, and WOW: Mists of Pandaria, which sometimes would not load, restrict the cursor to only one display, or minimize automatically.
