  • Western Digital Black2 Dual Drive Tested -  PC Perspective has one of those new Western Digital Black2 dual drives that combines a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD in a 2.5" package on the test bench.
  • OCZ files for bankruptcy - One of the biggest suppliers of solid state drives has announced it has filed for bankruptcy after months of financial problems. San Jose, California-based OCZ Technology revealed its plans on Wednesday, along with a buyout offer from Toshiba. The specific financial terms of the offer were not disclosed. If the deal does not go through, OCZ says it plans to liquidate its assets. Even if the deal with Toshiba goes through, there's no guarantee that the current warranties on current OCZ products will be honored.
  • Kobo Arc 10 HD video walkthrough - Despite not being the first name you'd think of when considering an Android tablet, Kobo impressed with its first Arc tablet 12 months ago. And now, Kobo is back, and stepping up to the 10-inch mark with this, the Arc 10 HD. As with the previous generation Arc, the Arc 10 HD is still a reading focused tablet. Kobo is after all an e-reading company, and so it's sticking firmly with what it knows. On the top there's the latest version of Kobo's custom UI, but as before underneath is a pretty much untouched Android 4.2.2 experience with some pre-loaded apps and a few minor tweaks.
  • Samsung Debuts Grand 2 Mid-Range Phablet - Samsung today announced the Grand 2, a large-screened Android smartphone with middle-of-the-market specs. The Grand 2 has a 5.25-inch 720p HD LCD display, a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, and 1.5GB of RAM. Other hardware features include an 8-megapixel camera with flash and a 1.9-megapixel user-facing camera; Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth 4.0; a 2,600mAh battery; support for microSD cards up to 64GB; and support for HSPA+ networks. The Grand 2 runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Samsung's TouchWiz user interface and apps such as ChatOn, Samsung Hub, S Health, Group Play, S Travel, S Translator, Samsung Link, and Story Album. The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 will be offered in white, and black, and pink in select markets. Samsung did not announce specific plans to bring the Grand 2 to the U.S.
  • Microsoft slams Google and its Chromebook in new video - Microsoft has released a new video for its Scroogled campaign and it's clear, the gloves are off when it comes to bashing Google. In the clip, posted above, Microsoft has recruited a few of the cast members from Pawn Stars to talk about the Chromebook. The clip is nothing short of throwing mud directly at Google as Rick, the lead character in Pawn Stars, refuses to buy a Chromebook off of a potential customer because it is not a real laptop. Rick says that because the Chromebook applications are web based, when you are not connected to the web, it's basically a brick. Further, Rick says that by having the Chromebook logo, it's not real laptop because it doesn't come with Office or Windows. Microsoft doesn't stop there; they say that when you are connected to the web, the Chromebook will track what you do online to put ads in front of your face.
  • YouTube Shoots Google In Foot - YouTube pre-roll ads are driving users to install adblocking software, which in turn is having devastating effects on independent publishers. Google, who last year earned 97% of their revenue from online advertising (over $32 billion) has a product that drives people to block ads. Crazy, right? While Google may be able to reduce the impact of adblocking, many smaller publishers shut down or set up premium subscriptions to make up for lost ad revenue. But according to AdBlock users, traditional advertising is not the problem- it's intrusive advertising that they can't stand. More-so, they're fed up with pre-roll YouTube ads, especially when the video they're trying to watch isn't much longer than the ad itself.
  • Journey through Middle-earth, a Chrome Experiment - Take a journey through Middle-earth in the latest Chrome Experiment.
  • Bomb Bird stars in Angry Birds update - Short Fuse - Rovio has updated the first Angry Birds game with a new set of #ShortFuse levels, plus an upgraded ability for the black bomb bird. First, the update contains 30 new levels "of explosive fun" where you can "enter the lab now to pop those pesky piggy scientists." The second tidbit is that the bomb bird now has a new shock wave power. Instead of just the simple explosion that already made that bird so great, he'll now be able to create "a powerful circle of electricity" before he "unleashes an almighty blast." I'm not sure if this is really enough to captivate me again, but until we get that Mario Kart clone from Rovio, I guess this will have to do. Get Angry Birds for iPhone for 99 cents if you haven't already done so or get the HD version for iPad for $2.99.
  • CyanogenMod intstaller voluntarily removed from Google Play - The official CyanogenMod blog this afternoon gave word that the CM Installer - an Android app that aids in the process of getting the custom ROM onto a device - was voluntarily pulled from Google Play
  • Jolla Smartphone Powered by Sailfish OS, Supports Android Apps - Some former Nokia engineers have gone off on their own to create the Sailfish OS and now the first Jolla Smartphone has launched. For the time being, it's only available to buy in Finland and they're limiting production to about 450 units as of today. This first batch is reserved for people who already preordered the Jolla Smartphone through wireless carrier DNA of Finland, so if you're not already on the list, you'll have to wait for the next batch. What makes Sailfish OS a little extra special is that it is its own operating system with its own apps, but it also supports Android apps too. As far as hardware goes, you can expect a 4.5-inch qHD IPS display, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 16GB storage, 1GB RAM, microSD expansion, and LTE support, all for an MSRP of 399 Euro. Jolla is currently in talks to expand distribution through UK mobile providers, as well as in other European countries.
  • Get the Samsung Galaxy S4 for Free on Contract - If you hop on over to Best Buy, you'll find that they have a doorbuster deal on the Samsung smartphone, giving you the chance to buy it for exactly zero dollars and zero cents. This deal, which is being offered both online and in brick-and-mortar stores, is applicable to a broad range of carriers too. Whether you're rocking Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T, you'll have the chance to get the Galaxy S4 for free on a two-year contract. This is valid both for new activations and for contract renewals. So, the contract is the first catch. The second catch is that you're still on the hook for the activation fee, which is about $35. Given that the regular contract price for the 16GB SGS4 is still $250, you're still getting a pretty great deal on a pretty great phone. The unlocked version sells for $799.99, by comparison. The free Galaxy S4 deal starts today and runs through to Saturday.
  • Coolpad Flo Hits T-Mobile's GoSmart Prepaid Network - GoSmart Mobile today announced the Coolpad Flo, an inexpensive Android smartphone that is available without signing an annual contract. The Coolpad Flo's features will probably fail to impress, but it is, at least, on par with other low-end smartphones in its range. It is powered by an unnamed 1 GHz dual-core processor with an unknown amount of RAM, though we wouldn't be shocked if it was a low 512 MB. Internal storage is capped at 4 GB but can be expanded with a microSD card. It has a 4.5-inch display, though don't expect too much quality, as the resolution is a rather low 854×480 pixels. It runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, which is a rather old version by now. Given the specs, though, it seems like a good test case for Android 4.4 compatibility with low-powered devices. It sports a 5 megapixel camera on the rear and a 0.3 one in front for video calls. But given that the device only supports 3G networks and a rather limited subscription option, that might not happen often. One good thing about the Coolpad Flo is its price point. the smartphone will be heading for T-Mobile's shelves under the carrier's GoSmart prepaid plans for $99, plus taxes and fees. However, given the relatively unknown brand and potentially more interesting options in the same price range, it wouldn't be surprising if customers skip over this one.
  • Robot Girl docking station 2 with Bluetooth speaker - The dock features LEDs that change color and the statues head nods to the beat of the music. The Bluetooth Speakers are well concealed within the fiber glass body. A part of the statues thigh opens up, not unlike Robocop's gun holster (now there's an idea), that gives you access to the actual dock for your device. The video below should give you an idea of just how ridiculously outrageous (not necessarily in a bad way) this dock really is and at a price of $6,500, it becomes even more so. I'm not saying it's not innovative, and it certainly is quite elaborate but at the end of the day it is just an iPhone/iPod dock.
  • Kinetic Light Newton's Cradle from ThinkGeek - The Kinetic Light Newton's Cradle by ThinkGeek is an illuminated LED version of the classic Newton's cradle "ball clicker" device. The illuminated edition's LEDs feature three light modes including flash, fade, and color cycle.

Retail Steam Machine Prototype - tech
(hx) 07:58 AM CET - Nov,26 2013 - Post a comment / read (6)
iBuyPower revealed their own prototype box for their own upcoming Steam Machine. Keep in mind that various manufacturers will be allowed to make their own devices and iBuyPower is one of them. Their unit will go on sale next year for $499 (USD), the same price as an Xbox One. Included will be a multicore AMD CPU, AMD Radeon R9 270 graphics card, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 500GB hard drive. The unit itself is smaller than an Xbox One but larger than a PS4. The power supply is included inside the case and appears to come in a glossy white with a customizable light bar running across the middle of the unit. Included will be a Steam Controller and the system itself will run the Linux-based Steam OS from Valve. The company claims that the hardware will have no problems running existing Steam Linux games at 1080p and 60fps. As this is merely a prototype and since the release is still in 2014, some details and specs are liable to be changed.

Battlefield 4 Windows 7 vs. 8.1 Performance - tech
(hx) 08:50 PM CET - Nov,25 2013 - Post a comment / read (5)
Is in-game real world Battlefield 4 gaming performance better on the Windows 8.1 operating system or on Windows 7? The chaps over at HardOCP take look at video card performance between Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 in this game and find out if upgrading to Windows 8.1 is worth it or not for the much rumored performance advantage. Here is a bit:
Is there a performance advantage in Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7 for BF4? The answer is, "Yes." We consistently found that under Windows 8.1 BF4 performed faster than Windows 7 on both AMD and NVIDIA hardware. Both GPUs, from both vendors, had a consistent performance advantage in every test we performed. More importantly, in the real-world multiplayer gaming session that matters, there was a performance advantage.

Now, this performance advantage is small on the R9 290X at around 3%. It is larger on the GTX 780 at around 6%. We found this more interesting. It seems the GeForce GTX 780 was more advantageous in performance under Windows 8.1 than the R9 290X was. We did not expect that. With all the work AMD has put into BF4 and DX11.1, we figured the R9 290X would show the highest performance advantages. However, the reverse is true. It is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 that is benefiting the most from Windows 8.1.

Gameplay Image Quality Advantage

Was there an advantage to the image quality settings under Windows 8.1? The answer is "No." The performance advantages were generally small at 3-6%. This isn’t enough of a performance boost to allow us to raise the resolution, or raise the AA settings, or raise an image quality setting. We were not able to play at different game settings under Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7. This means the game will look the same under both operating systems.

Gameplay Experience Advantages

Are there gameplay experience advantages under Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7 in BF4? The answer is a, "Big YES."

Under Windows 7, we experienced choppiness as we played. This was felt both in the "Test Range" map, and in multiplayer gaming sessions. The choppiness was more pronounced on the GeForce GTX 780. We could get on a straight path, in the "Test Range" and move down a straight road. As we did this, there would be a pause, or chop, in the frames randomly. It was like the game was hitching for no reason. This happened more on the GTX 780. This is under Windows 7.

When we tried this on Windows 8.1 the pausing, or hitching, or chop (however you want to describe it) was completely gone. Moving was smoother with no hitching in the game on the GTX 780. This affected both the test range and the multiplayer gaming session.

Therefore, the gameplay experience advantage under Windows 8.1 is a smoother gameplay experience in BF4 on both video cards.

Upgrade to Windows 8.1

Finally, the big question, should you upgrade to Windows 8.1 for BF4? We are on the fence about this one because it really depends on what kind of a BF4 player you are.

If you are hardcore BF4 player, and you eat, breathe, and live this game, and you play for hours a day, then yes, Windows 8.1 is an advantageous upgrade for you. It will provide a smoother experience, with no hitching or choppiness. Also, if you own a GeForce GTX GPU series it will help those framerates more and help improve the minimum framerate, which is very important in a game like this. You have to understand it won’t change your image quality settings, it will just pretty much provide a smoother experience, with higher minimum FPS.

If you are a casual BF4 gaming, then no, upgrading to Windows 8.1 is a waste of money for you for this game. There aren’t enough improvements to justify the price of upgrading to Windows 8.1 for just one game.

Mantle

The new and upcoming Mantle API may throw a wrench into the situation and shake things up. If simply moving to a new OS, based on the same DX API, improves performance like we saw today, our hopes are very high on what a new API could do in comparison to DirectX. We are very excited about finding out this December. The fact though that we got as much as 6% performance advantage on the same API, just by upgrading the OS, gives us a lot of hope for Mantle and the completely different API that it is.

  • Best Gaming CPUs For The Money: November 2013 - The A10-6790K is pretty much an A10-6800K with its base and maximum Turbo Core frequencies lowered 100 MHz to 4.0 and 4.3 GHz, respectively. Otherwise, there's no difference between the two Richland-based processors except a $10 price spread. The newer model is cheaper at $130. That's not bad for an APU with an unlocked ratio multiplier, but at this point we'd rather wait for the upcoming Kaveri generation with AMD's Steamroller x86 design and graphics engine leveraging GCN. From the Intel camp we have two new 65 W processors for $200: the Haswell-based Core i5-4440S (with its 2.8 GHz base and 3.3 GHz peak Turbo Boost frequencies, along with HD Graphics 4600) and the Ivy Bridge-based Core i5-3340S (also operating at 2.8 and up to 3.3 GHz, but with HD Graphics 2500). Intel already has a number of 65 W CPUs at similar price points for both LGA 1150 and 1155, so it's difficult to understand why it's adding more to this category.
  • AMD teases industry's first supercomputing graphics card with 12GB - Chip manufacturer AMD has teased a new a 12GB version of its Firepro S10000 graphics processing unit (GPU), which was launched in November last year and available in 6GB version, designed for big data high performance computing (HPC) workloads. AMD claims the Firepro S10000 12GB is the industry's first supercomputing server graphics card. The new 12GB GPU features ECC memory plus DirectGMA support, which according to the company allows developers working with large models and assemblies to use parallel processing capabilities of AMD GPUs, which are based on the AMD's Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture.
  • Xbox One Review: Unifying Your Living Room Experience - It's a convergence of living room entertainment with an interface that's much like Microsoft's Windows 8 UI. Unlike the controversial operating system, however, the Xbox's tile-based interface feels as natural on your TV as it does on Windows Phone. It's actually harder to compare the Xbox One to Sony's PlayStation 4 than most gamers would have you believe. Neither console can be distilled down into its shader cores or memory bandwidth. If you're looking for a dedicated gaming machine, the PlayStation does have a big advantage in its specifications and $400 price tag. But the extra $100 for Microsoft's Xbox One buys you more than just the Kinect camera. It also comes with Microsoft's promise to reinvent the way you enjoy content on your TV, and that's a very compelling pitch.
  • Head-to-head: Everything you need to know in the PS4 vs. Xbox One battle - The Xbox One is generally less power hungry than the PS4, running a good 20 to 30 Watts lower whether sitting idle on menus, displaying streaming video, or running at maximum gaming performance. The PS4 wins out in standby mode, though, saving seven or eight Watts when the systems are "off" but still awake enough to download content or start up quickly (both systems can be turned off completely to avoid almost all power draw).
  • iFixit opens up the Playstation 4 - replaceable hard drive earns big props - In addition to tearing apart an Xbox One, the iFixit folks also recently pried apart Sony's latest console, the PlayStation 4. One of the immediately noticeable differences between the two consoles is the accessibility of the primary storage. The Xbox One requires a considerable amount of disassembly to pull out and replace the hard disk drive, and iFixit calls it a warranty-voiding procedure. Sony, on the other hand, makes pulling out the 2.5-inch 5400 rpm SATA II drive relatively simple - it requires only a single Philips-head screwdriver. However, aside from the user-replaceable HDD, getting into the system's guts is a little harder than with the Xbox One. The One uses standard T9 Torx screws, while the PS4 uses Torx Security screws, which won't seat a screwdriver with a regular Torx bit.
  • Apple iPad mini with Retina Display Reviewed - If you're on the fence about upgrading from an older iPad (or even the first gen mini), the iPad mini with Retina Display is a tempting target. Compared to virtually all previous iPads you're going to notice a substantial increase in performance thanks to Apple's A7 SoC. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that the performance improvement over the previous generation mini (featuring Apple's A5) can be just as noticeable of an uprade as the display. The new mini is a leap forward in performance compared to its predecessor. While Apple has the 10-inch tablet market more or less locked up with the iPad Air, the mini faces stiff competition. The biggest comes from Google with the $229 2013 Nexus 7. You get an incredibly affordable device and a display with full sRGB gamut. What the mini offers is a faster SoC, a wider display (a Nexus 8 would be nice) and of course, iOS. I’ve heard varying opinions on iOS vs. Android when talking about tablet or smartphone use. Some users prefer Android on one and iOS on the other, vice versa or find themselves exclusively in one camp. This one is best left up to personal preference.
  • Office Remote App Lets WP8 Devices Control Presentations - Microsoft has announced a new application for Windows Phone 8 devices called Office Remote. The app lets any WP8 device control a PowerPoint, Word, or Excel presentation. The app requires a Bluetooth-enabled computer with Office 2013 and a desktop plug-in. With all the components together, WP8 device owners will be able use their smartphone to advance slides, view thumbnails, jump between slides, access speaker cues, and more. Office Remote for Windows Phone 8 is free to download from the Windows Phone Store.
  • Samsung Galaxy S5 with Iris Scanner and 64-Bit Processor? - The current rumors point toward a Q1 2014 release of the flagship Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone, but what new toys and features will Samsung bring to the table? For starters, it might start scanning your eyes for security reasons. Samsung already uses face detection technology as part of its software package (like Smart Stay and Smart Scan), but this would go further. If you have a NEXUS pass, then you may have used a retina scanner at the airport. You've probably seen these scanners in movies too. The embedded iris scanner would likely use the front-facing camera, unlocking your phone without the need to enter a PIN code. This goes further than the sometimes buggy, sometimes too lax face detection unlock. It could also be Samsung's answer to Apple's Touch ID fingerprint scanner, but it could be better: it doesn't require touch and it processes the biometric data more quickly. Speaking of Apple, even though some people may say that 64-bit processing isn't yet necessary for mobile, we see it in the iPhone 5S. The Samsung Galaxy S5 could follow suit with a processor based on 64-bit ARM architecture too. This is in line with previous announcements made by Samsung that they too would be pursuing a 64-bit smartphone.
  • LG G Flex Self Healing Demo! - The most intriguing part about the G Flex's design is its self healing rear panel. That too has been tested with remarkable results. Reviewers took to knives and keys while LG, in a more controlled environment, used a brush with bronze bristles. In LG's demo, the metallic bristles left scars on the panel that were showcased as disappearing before your very eyes on video. But an advertisement is just that, a trick or illusion to prove just how effect a device is. So naturally, when review units were out, intrepid testers used their own tools in more real-world environments to see just how resilient the self-healing panel really was. From what we've seen in the video (below) the scratches do tend to fade after a few minutes and deeper scratches after a longer period. They don't disappear completely but you'll need to look really close to make them out.
  • Apple Given Second Chance to Ban Samsung Phones - A federal court of appeals today reversed the decision of a lower court and cleared the way for Apple to seek a ban on certain Samsung devices. A handful of Samsung devices were found to infringe on certain Apple patents at trial last year. Apple requested that the products be banned from import/sale in the U.S., but was denied that request. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said the lower court abused its discretion in denying Apple's request.
  • Logitech releases the PowerShell, the world's first iOS 7 - The PowerShell is compatible with the iPhone 5/5S and the iPod Touch 5th Generation and the controller includes a built-in battery, so players can play for as long as they'd like. Its analog D-Pad, two should triggers, and four face buttons should look very familiar to gamers everywhere and the PowerShell gives your iPhone/iPod a PSP-like look.
  • HBO Go Android app updated with Chromecast support - Good news for all Chromecast fans. HBO has just updated its HBO Go Android app to support Chromecast. And ... well, that's about it. Fire it up just like you would any other Chromecast stream, and you're watching HBO on your TV, through Chromecast. You'll still need an HBO subscription, of course. And some sort of Android device. And a Chromecast. But other than that, this is pure magic.
  • NASA's MAVEN Mission to Mars Launched - Billions of years ago when the Red Planet was young, it appears to have had a thick atmosphere that was warm enough to support oceans of liquid water - a critical ingredient for life. The animation shows how the surface of Mars might have appeared during this ancient clement period, beginning with a flyover of a Martian lake. The artist's concept is based on evidence that Mars was once very different. Rapidly moving clouds suggest the passage of time, and the shift from a warm and wet to a cold and dry climate is shown as the animation progresses. The lakes dry up, while the atmosphere gradually transitions from Earthlike blue skies to the dusty pink and tan hues seen on Mars today.
  • In Saturn's Rings - New Teaser 4K (space photoanimation) - Some guy is putting together a film using over one million real photographs and he needs money to fund the soundtrack and some iMax stuff.
  • Invisible Helmet Deploys Like an Airbag on Impact - A new concept in biking helmets has hit the markets in Sweden. Technically they aren't really invisible, just not seen when not deployed, just like an automobile airbag.
  • You Should Never Get This Close To A Tornado (video) - Karla Konieczki's first time to witness a tornado was certainly dramatic. Driving just south of Minonk, Illinois, on November 17, she had this close shave with a large tornado on a day when stormy conditions played havoc in the Midwest.

  • JFK Assassination: Watch as it happened - A half century ago, the nation absorbed a massive shock assembled around television sets, huddled around the nearest radio, drawn by word that John F. Kennedy had been shot. They learned together that their young and vibrant President was gone. There was no 24-hour news back then. Just a few major networks and old antenna TVs. When the shooting happened, the networks cut in and viewers of NBC stations suddenly saw Frank McGee standing over the anchor desk in New York, explaining what the news division was doing to collect information. The technology of the day was under massive strain. Every radio and telephone circuit connecting Dallas to the rest of the world was snarled. The anchors in New York began relaying whatever reporting from Dallas and Parkland Memorial Hospital they could collect. They confirmed that the President had been shot.

Black Mesa Getting a Retail Release - tech
(hx) 10:10 AM CET - Nov,20 2013 - Post a comment
The Black Mesa team is announcing that their mod will be receiving a retail release on Steam, and that it is being rebuilt on the full version of the Source Engine.
Soon you'll see Black Mesa available on Steam for a relatively low price. But we aren't dropping all support for the free version. In fact shortly after the Steam release there will be a completely new free version of the game. We also plan to open source our maps and some game assets to the modding community!

Purchasing the Steam version of Black Mesa is more about supporting the team and our efforts than anything else. However, the Steam version will include features that the free version simply can not have. We will be paying careful attention to feedback, and you'll have a very real say in how the final game turns out.

Nvidia has released new WHQL-certified drivers GeForce 331.82 that the GPU maker claims will increase performance by up to 50 percent for GeForce 400, 500, 600, and 700 Series graphics cards in "several PC games." One of those titles is Metro: Last Light, though beyond that specific game, Nvidia didn't say which others receive such a generous boost. Other examples Nvidia provided include up to 26 percent better performance in Crysis 3 and up to an 18 percent boost in Battlefield 4 after installing the new driver (versus GeForce 327.23). In addition to performance gains, GeForce 331.82 also introduces new and updated SLI profiles, it enables GameStream technology, and it enables ShadowPlay technology. Other than those tidbits, you can expect the usual round of tweaks that result in better performance and bug fixes.

  • AMD now says only 'some' 9-series cards will come with Battlefield 4 - AMD's claim that any R9 series card purchased after November 11 will come with a copy of Battlefield 4 doesn't appear to be true.
  • Intel SSD 530 (240GB) Review - Ultimately there is one crucial thing that the SSD 530 provides over the SSD 520: price. The SSD 520 has been rather expensive and it hasn't really been able to compete, in price or performance, with the newer SSDs with smaller lithography NAND. As a result, I haven't been able to recommend the SSD 520 for ages as it simply hasn't provided any value for the extra cost. With the SSD 530 Intel's pricing is more reasonable and closer to other high-end SSDs. In fact, Intel's pricing is very competitive if you compare the SSD 530 to OCZ Vector 150 or SanDisk Extreme II, although those two also outperform the SSD 530 by a fairly big margin.
  • Western Digital My Cloud EX4 Tested - The chaps over at PC Perspective have posted a review of the Western Digital's My Cloud EX4. It offers many storage options at a very reasonable cost, as well as a plethora of way to access that storage. USB devices and other networked targets can all be consolidated through the EX4's excellent interface and then easily accessed in a variety of methods and by a variety of mobile devices. Speeds were noted to be average for a typical consumer NAS device, but the strengths of the EX4 are clearly in the features and app capability.
  • Brand-new Dell XPS 11 convertible and upgraded XPS 13 ultrabook start selling, cost north of $1,000 -  Dell has started accepting pre-orders for the first ever XPS 11 convertible and the follow-up to the more conventional 2012 XPS 13 ultrabook.
  • Acer refreshes Chromebook line with another C720 model, this one costing $200 - When Acer unveiled its first 2013 Chromebook, the $250 C720-2800, it was hard to imagine things could get any cheaper than that with similar specs. And yet the Taiwanese have just outdone themselves, taking the wraps off the $200 C720-2848.  Like its sibling, the new C720 Chromebook is built on Intel's sizzling hot Haswell micro-architecture, so it packs decent punch… all things considered, as well as making the most of an otherwise lackluster battery. Mind you though, we’re not looking at a laptop powered by an Intel processor part of the Core i family, but instead a more modest Celeron clocked at 1.4 GHz. Also, and this is important, the C720-2848
  • HP Chromebook 11 review - The Chromebook 11, a smaller (as in 11 inches) ARM-powered follow up to the larger Chromebook 14 from earlier this year, is yet another inexpensive Chromebook from HP and Google that builds on the same strategy as the devices before it. Put together a small and portable form factor, fill it with inexpensive components and sell it on the cheap - it's a recipe for topping the sales charts for a laptop on Amazon, but is it really a product to get excited about? No matter where you stand on the merits of using a Chrome OS device, there are more than a few things the $279 Chromebook 11 has going for it.
  • NVIDIA Tegra Note 7 Review - The Tegra Note 7 (formerly Tegra Tab) story starts with platform, which consists of a Tegra 4 SoC clocked at a maximum single core clock of 1.8 GHz (slightly lower than the 1.9 GHz maximum for Shield, with its active cooling), 7-inch 1280x800 IPS display, front-facing stereo speakers, a stylus for inking, and of course a close-to-stock version of Android running on top of it all. There's also a 5 MP camera on the back with autofocus, and VGA front facing camera. The best part however is price - NVIDIA's partners will bring the Tegra Note 7 to market at just $199. Coming in at the price of the original Nexus 7 makes it obvious that NVIDIA envisions the Tegra Note 7 as the true successor to the original Nexus 7. Of course the obvious comparison is the $30 more expensive refreshed Nexus 7 (2013) with much higher resolution display.
  • Flipboard app for Windows 8.1 finally released - As with the previously released iOS and Android versions, the Flipboard app offers users a way to read their favorite news web sites and social media outlets in a magazine style format. Flipboard has stated they made an extra effort on the Windows 8.1 version, including a way to pin pages from the app to the Start screen so that users can see updated stories via Live tiles. The video above has a good tutorial on the new app. Keep in mind that the app is just for Windows 8.1 and won't work with the older Windows 8 OS.
  • Internet Explorer on Xbox One detailed -
While it took Microsoft seven years to add Internet Explorer to its Xbox 360 console, the upcoming Xbox One will have a version of the company's web browser ready to go for the launch on November 22nd. Today, the official IE blog has more information on IE for Xbox One. The Kinect add-on can be used with IE so people can view, for example, the New York Times website simply by saying, “Browse to New York Times". You can also say "Click on" and then the name of any link on a web page to have IE surf to that page. Microsoft says IE can head to the page just by hearing a few of the words in the link.
  • Best Buy to sell 32GB Surface for $199.99 on Black Friday - Best Buy revealed their 2013 Black Friday sales items and, as reported by BFAds.net, the 32GB Surface tablet, previously known as Surface RT, will be priced at just $199.99. This is the lowest price we have seen for a Surface tablet that is going to be made available to the general public. Microsoft did sell a 64GB Surface RT tablet to TechEd attendees earlier this year for $99. Even though the sales period is called "Black Friday", many retailers in the U.S. will actually begin their sales period on Thanksgiving Day, November 28th. That includes Best Buy, which will have most of its stores open. Well, if this were the original price last year, these things would have been popular. Personally I will wait till the new surface goes down to $200 :-)
  • Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target reveal Black Friday sales  - Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy have revealed their respective Black Friday sales ads that offer savings on consoles and games. While next-gen is all but upon us, these three retailers don't include any PS4 or Xbox One deals in their sales and instead stick to current-gen hardware and titles. Additionally many of retailers start the following Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving rather than the day after, so be sure to scan them and scope out the deals and make your plans beforehand. The console deals include a 4GB Xbox 360 for $100, a PS3 250GB bundled with The Last of Us and Batman: Arkham Origins for $199. As far as game deals we have some pretty awesome price slashes on newly released current-gen titles like Call of Duty: Ghosts for $40 and award-winning yesteryear classes like Tomb Raider and Far Cry 3 for a pittance of $15. Target will be offering a nice deal on a Nintendo 3DS XL for $150, but on average they offer many of the same savings as the others. For gamers who opt in for Nintendo's new 2DS handheld, Wal-Mart has them for $99-but of course remember that the 2DS doesn't have the clamshell closing mechanism and is more like a tablet that can't easily drop in your pocket.
  • Adobe leaks 150 million passwords; Facebook and others impacted - The fallout from the recent Adobe breach keeps growing. At first it was thought that "only" a few million passwords were leaked when the company's servers were attacked by a sophisticated hacker. While that number is already higher than it should be, the scope turned out to be at least 50x larger, with new estimates putting the number of leaked credentials at over 150 million. Not only is this news extremely bad for Adobe, but it's also having a big impact on other websites across the Internet due to the fact that people frequently use the same password on multiple sites. From large sites like Facebook to smaller sites like Diapers.com and Soap.com, companies are examining the stolen data and sending out warnings to customers that they suspect may have the same passwords. According to Krebs on Security, Adobe made the mistake of encrypting all of the passwords with a single key, so if it's brute forced or stolen, the entire trove of data can be unlocked.  Adobe need to drop subscription plan because it sucks and they can't protect their user base!!
  • Over 70,000 unencrypted credit card and CCV numbers stolen - According to the Irish Times, the credit card information of over 70,000 people has been stolen from a company called (ironically) Loyaltybuild. Not only were the credit card numbers themselves stolen, but the related CCV numbers were as well. To add insult to injury, the data was sitting on the systems in an unencrypted format, meaning whoever took the data can start using it immediately. In addition to the direct credit card data, roughly 1.5 million people had their personal information stolen -- including names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses
  • Your Phone's Camera and Microphone Can Reveal Your PIN - Cambridge security researchers have been hacking smartphone passwords using the devices' own cameras and microphones. Laurent Simon and Ross Anderson at the University of Cambridge used an app they called "PIN Skimmer" to capture passwords as they were entered into a Samsung Galaxy S3 and a Google Nexus S, both of which use number-only soft keyboards.
  • CyanogenMod Installer hits the Play Store to help you flash your smartphone - In its push to make installing its custom firmware easier for the average user, CyanogenMod has just launched its installer app in the Play Store. You'll need more than just the app to get through the process, however. After installing and going through a few basic instructions related to turning on USB debugging and the like, you'll be pointed to its get.cm website to download the desktop software to initiate the install. You'll still need a Windows PC (running Vista or later) and a good USB cable to get your phone flashed with CyanogenMod, which adds another wrinkle of complication to the process. The combination of apps on your phone and computer should make it pretty simple though, provided your phone is on the list of compatible devices.

GeForce GTX 780 Ti vs. Radeon R9 290X 4K Gaming - tech
(hx) 08:08 PM CET - Nov,12 2013 - Post a comment
The chaps over at HardOCP have pitted the GeForce GTX 780 Ti against the Radeon R9 290X in a 4K gaming showdown. Here's an excerpt:
In this evaluation we have looked at the new GeForce GTX 780 Ti for $699 against the AMD Radeon R9 290X for $549 at Ultra HD 4K display gaming. In our original evaluation of R9 290X, we found that it dominated gaming at Ultra HD 4K display gaming against the GTX 780 and GTX TITAN. The new GeForce GTX 780 Ti changes this.

In our evaluation today we have found out that the new GeForce GTX 780 Ti equalizes the gameplay experience with Radeon R9 290X at Ultra HD 4K display gaming. In most of our games we were able to play at the same gameplay settings on both cards. There were a couple though that were different. In Far Cry 3 the Radeon R9 290X had a clear advantage that allowed us to play at a higher setting compared to the GTX 780 Ti. In Metro: Last Light though we could enable PhysX due to the support on NVIDIA GPUs. If the R9 290X could support this, it certainly had the performance to pull it off.

For the most part, performance was similar between the two video cards. There were a couple cases where the 780 Ti was small percentages faster, and a couple where the R9 290X were small percentages faster. On the whole, both cards are so similar to each other at Ultra HD 4K gaming that it would be impossible to discern between these while gaming on a 4K display. On both cards we had to make image quality sacrifices. Neither are fast enough to max the games out at that resolution. SLI and CrossFire is needed to get the most out of 4K gaming. Even these fast single-GPU video cards cannot pull off high game settings.

GTX 780 Ti 3GB versus R9 290X 4GB

In all of our testing today, we tried to look for the differences between 3GB and 4GB of VRAM while gaming. We encountered no scenarios in these games where the 3GB of VRAM on the GTX 780 Ti was holding it back at Ultra HD 4K gaming. We also encountered no scenarios where the 4GB was an advantage on the R9 290X.

The reason why we aren't seeing the difference between VRAM capacity right now is because these cards aren't fast enough to exploit the kind of game settings that would push the limits of VRAM. At this resolution these just aren't fast enough to exploit the highest in-game settings, and high levels of AA.

We think the difference in VRAM capacity isn't going to show itself until you are running SLI and CrossFire plus you need to be running the right game that loads up the VRAM. Right now, that is few and far between in the games that demand such a large VRAM capacity. BF4 is one game that may show a difference, and we have lots planned for BF4 testing in the future.

  • The AMD Radeon R9 290 Review - The problem is that while the 290 is a fantastic card and a fantastic story on a price/performance basis, in chasing that victory AMD has thrown caution into the wind and thrown out any kind of balance between performance and noise. At 57.2dB the 290 is a loud card. A very loud card. An unreasonably loud card. AMD has quite simply prioritized performance over noise, and these high noise levels are the price of doing so.
  • OCZ Vector 150 (120GB & 240GB) Review -  The Vector 150 is a logical successor for the Vector. It doesn't redefine SSD performance, yet OCZ has managed to add enough improvements to the Vector 150 to make it a different product. The first one is IO consistency. While the Vector had good performance consistency to begin with, the Vector 150 takes that one step further. It's without a doubt one of the most consistent (if not the most consistent) SSDs we have tested and that's a big achievement. Especially for heavy workloads with lots of random writes the IO consistency is a very important performance metric because the drives tend to be in steady-state (or close to it) due to the amount of writes and you definitely don't want your application to be waiting for your SSD. The second major improvement is endurance. 50GB/day for five years should cover almost any power user's need for endurance (or if not, you should really invest in an enterprise class SSD). Remember that it's 50GB seven days a week for five years -- even one day with less writes a week will give you even more headroom to play with.
  • Samsung Spinpoint M9T is world's thinnest 2TB notebook drive - The latest one is the 2.5" Spinpoint M9T, which crams an impressive 2TB of storage into a case just 9.5 mm thick. The Spinpoint isn't skinny enough to match 5- and 7-mm notebook drives, but it's a fair bit thinner than competing 2TB offerings, which are 15 mm thick. Despite its slim profile, the Spinpoint packs three 667GB platters. A 1.5TB version is also available, and both variants have 6Gbps SATA connectivity and 32MB of DRAM cache. The spindle speed is a sluggish 5,400 RPM, though

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition lands in Canada Nov 8 - Samsung's latest high-end Android tablet, the stylus-toting Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition, will be arriving in Canada from tomorrow, Nov. 8. Canadians will be getting the Wifi-only octa-core Exynos version of the Android 4.3 tablet, which packs a 2560x1600-resolution, 10.1-inch display, 3GB of RAM and the same S Pen functionality as its smaller sibling the Galaxy Note 3. The new Note 10.1 will arrive at Best Buy, Future Shop and "other major retailers" tomorrow in the "classic white" color. There's no word on when (or if) the "jet black" version will be joining it. However Samsung is offering a bunch of promotional goodies for Note 10.1 buyers, including a $20 Samsung apps gift card, three months of free Rdio streaming, two free ebooks from the "For Dummies" series and 50GB of Dropbox storage for two years, as part of an offer that runs until Nov. 30.
  • Is T-Mobile's 200MB Free Tablet Data Actually Free? - Late last month T-Mobile was giving out 200MB of LTE data for free every month, no strings attached. Unfortunately, there are a few strings attached, but only for certain customers. When some customers first signed up for the free monthly plan, they were hit with a monthly "network access fee" of $10. T-Mobile has since clarified the "billing problem" and they're in the process of issuing refunds. That's the good news. Second, if you want to get the fully free 200MB of LTE data each month, you will need to have a fully paid-off device. What this means is that if you want to take advantage of the no-money-down deal for something like a new iPad Air, then you'll need to pay for the iPad's financing, of course, but you'll also need to sign up for a $20 data plan if you're not already a customer. The 200MB of free data will then be added on top of that. If you own an iPad (or some other compatible tablet) outright, though, the totally free 200MB of data can indeed be totally free.

Beyond the camera, the Zoom runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and has a 4.3-inch qHD display, dual-core 1.5GHz processor, Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS, Bluetooth, and LTE. AT&T is offering the GS4 Zoom for $199.99 with a new two-year contract, or $25 per month with its AT&T Next upgrade plans. It will be available beginning November 8. AT&T is also offering a free Galaxy Tab tablet to GS4 Zoom buyers (separate data plan required) or a $100 promotional gift card to customers who trade in old smartphones.
  • Samsung Says 4K Smartphone Screens On the Way - Samsung, speaking to analysts, laid out its technology roadmap for the next several years and there are some notable milestones on the horizon. The company is already working on smartphone displays with WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution that include 560 pixels per inch. These will arrive as soon as next year. Samsung expects to have Ultra HD, or 4K, resolution displays available for smartphones as soon as 2015. Ultra HD screens include 3840 x 2160 pixels. In addition to the higher resolution displays, Samsung fully expects to bring bendable displays to the market by next year and foldable displays by late 2015 or early 2016. Beyond screens, Samsung is working to create 3D, 64-bit processors; a new, stacked 16-megapixel image sensor; and faster, higher-capacity memory.

If a pencil or pen is all that can be found to roll the tubes they will still work, though not as well. Careful not to try this around flammable things as there is obviously fire involved.

Gamers cries for a fix for lagging mouse movement while playing games in 8.1 has been heard by Microsoft. The patch addresses problems with 22 games variations and more if you are computer savvy. The Microsoft Support website has launched a page with download links for the update that cover the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 8.1, along with a download for Windows Server 2012 R2. Microsoft's support site says the patch fixes the problem for the following list of games:
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops - Multiplayer
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Multiplayer
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Zombies
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts - Multiplayer
  • Call of Duty: MW2
  • Call of Duty: MW2 - Multiplayer
  • Call of Duty: MW3
  • Call of Duty: MW3 - Multiplayer
  • Call of Duty: MW
  • Call of Duty: MW - Multiplayer
  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive
  • Counter Strike: Source
  • Deus Ex : Human Revolution
  • Deus Ex : Human Revolution Director's Cut
  • Hitman Absolution
  • Hitman Sniper Challenge
  • Half Life 2
  • Metro 2033
  • Portal
  • Tomb Raider
In addition, people who download and install the patch can extend it to include other games that are not on the official list which are affected by the same mouse lag. The support page includes the rather complicated procedure to enable this extra support, which involves going into the Windows 8.1 registry.
Future MS CEO Will Consider Selling Xbox Division - tech
(hx) 07:13 AM CET - Nov,10 2013 - Post a comment / read (2)
Microsoft is currently searching for a new CEO to replace Steve Ballmer, who plans to retire within the next 10 months. Recent reports suggest the company has shortlisted Ford CEO Alan Mulally and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop as external candidates. Elop according to Bloomberg, is willing to sell off major divisions, killing Bing and consider selling off the XBox divisions.
Elop is reportedly considering a strategy shift away from Microsoft’s tradition of Office running primarily on Windows PCs. Bloomberg reports that Elop is formulating "some broad strategic outlines for Microsoft," in what is likely to be part of the interview process for the CEO position. Elop’s potential strategy is said to involve maximizing sales of Office instead of using it to push Windows PC and tablet sales. Microsoft’s Office and server software has been performing well in recent financial results, while Windows continues to struggle alongside a declining PC industry. Although Office has launched for iOS and Android, Microsoft could certainly do more to offer complete versions on those rival platforms.

loomberg also suggests that Elop is willing to shut down or sell some major Microsoft businesses. Elop would reportedly considering killing off the company’s Bing search engine, while contemplating selling the Xbox business. Some investors and analysts have previously called for the software giant to split off its Xbox business and give up on search. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen appears to feel the same way. Allen’s $15-billion asset manager, Paul Ghaffari, revealed recently that Bing and Xbox have been distractions for Microsoft. "My view is there are some parts of that operation they should probably spin out, get rid of, to focus on the enterprise and focus on the cloud." Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund claims Microsoft’s financial earnings could be boosted by 40 percent in fiscal 2015 if the company sold its Bing and Xbox businesses

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Review Round-Up - tech
(hx) 12:07 AM CET - Nov,08 2013 - Post a comment / read (3)
The NDA has expired and the review embargo has been lifted on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti. Reviews are coming in from around the internet:
OCC: The performance metrics show that running head to head against the R9 290X, the GTX 780 Ti comes out on top in most of the tests run. When run hot, the margin gets even larger. Sure the R9 290X wins some, but the vast majority see the latest from the green team coming out on top. We could see the writing on the wall with the launch of the GTX 780 - seeing how well it performed in relation to NVIDIA's GTX Titan and being truly stunned at what it had to offer. I have that same feeling now after testing the GTX 780 Ti, fully proving that the addition of the additional CUDA cores and high speed memory makes this the pinnacle of NVIDIA single-GPU gaming. If you need more gaming power for a 4K display, you have the option of adding in another card (or cards) in an SLI configuration to get to that next FPS plateau. GeForce Experience was launched with the GTX 780 as a way to take all the performance settings data that NVIDIA has put together to deliver the best possible gaming experience by optimizing the in- game settings for your GPU. We all struggle at one time or another to reach that perfect combination of settings. Using GeForce Experience, it's now done for you if you choose to use the tool. Another part of GeForce Experience is ShadowPlay, which launched with the GTX 780 Ti and is a way to record 1080p gameplay at 60 FPS without a significant performance hit thanks to the H.264 video encoder built into the Kepler architecture. There's no doubt the GTX 780 Ti is fast and delivers smooth-as-silk gameplay. At $699, it is taking over the price point of the GTX 780 and is still $300 less than the GTX Titan. To make this price point more attractive, NVIDIA is sweetening the pot from October 28 through December 31 if you buy a GTX 780 Ti. A trio of AAA game will be included from e-tailers, including Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist; all topped off with a voucher for $100 off an NVIDIA SHIELD. If you are looking for the next best thing, it's here and it's called the GTX 780 Ti.

PCPer: The new GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB takes back the crown and title of the fastest single GPU graphics card on the market.  It does this with a full GK110 powering it, 2,880 CUDA cores running at a base clock higher than the original GTX 780 AND has a GDDR5 memory bus running at 7.0 Gbps.  All of this adds up to performance that is beating out the GTX 780 (non-Ti), the GTX TITAN and the Radeon R9 290X. The reign of the R9 290X at the top of the mountain was rather short lived, but in reality we expected a quick reaction from NVIDIA.  AMD's Hawaii GPU surprised us all with its ability to outpace the GTX 780 (at the time $100 more expensive) as well as the GTX TITAN (at the time $450 more!).  But NVIDIA was willing to sacrifice the GTX TITAN as the flagship gaming option in order to produce a card that could perform better than the 290X, while being reasonably close in cost. In my testing, the GTX 780 Ti was able to maintain a 10-15% performance advantage over the R9 290X in our most demanding games at 2560x1440 and 3840x2160.  Results at 1920x1080 were much closer though if you are gaming on a graphics card like this on a standard 1080p panel, you are doing it wrong quite frankly.  Sorry.  A couple of games, like Bioshock Infinite and GRID 2, showed reasonably close performance between the AMD and NVIDIA flaghips however, so the win wasn't a total slam dunk for the 780 Ti.

HotHardware: The GeForce GTX 780 Ti's performance was excellent across the board. Its beefier GPU and higher memory clock allowed it to overtake the mighty GeForce GTX Titan and original GeForce GTX 780. And in the majority of our tests, the GeForce GTX 780 Ti was also able to outpace the Radeon R9 290X. The GeForce GTX 780 Ti also split with the R9 290X when tested at a 4K resolution, the GeForce offered more consistent frame times than CrossFired Radeons when running in a dual-GPU SLI configuration, and they ran cooler and quieter too. While the GeForce GTX 780 Ti is quieter and faster than the Radeon R9 290X overall, it's arriving at $699, a price roughly 20% higher than the Radeon's. That's justifiable in light of the card's performance, bundle, and other desirable characteristics, but the game may change when AMD's partners ready custom versions of the 290X with higher clocks, and quieter, more capable coolers, and the Radeons' larger 4GB frame buffer may pay dividends as 4K monitors become more prevalent--time will tell.

LegitReviews: Compared to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, the GeForce GTX 780 Ti has had 3 extra SMX units enabled inside the NVIDIA GK110 Kepler GPU.  This means that all 15 the SMX units in the 5 graphics processing clusters are now fully enabled and that the GK110 is running all out (unless there is a sixth cluster). The GK110 block diagram above shows all 15 SMX units on the GK110 Kepler GPU.  Each SMX unit has 192 CUDA cores, so the GeForce GTX 780 has 2304 CUDA cores and the GeForce GTX 780 Ti has a whopping 2880! This is a 25% increase in just the number of cores and that is before NVIDIA bumped up the clock speeds! NVIDIA just didn't enable more cores though and walk away. They also increased the GPU clock speeds on the GeForce GTX 780 Ti to 875MHz base and 928MHz boost from 863MHz base and 902MHz boost on the GeForce GTX 780.  This is a subtle 1.4% increase on the base clock and 2.9% on the boost clocks, but remember that the GeForce GTX 780 Ti has 25% more cores as well.  NVIDIA gave the memory a major 16.5% speed increase, so the 3GB of GDDR5 memory running on the 384-bit bus has increased from 6008MHz (effective) to 7000MHz (effective). This frequency increase has caused the memory bandwidth to go from 288.4 GB/s all the way up to 336.0 GB/s, so a 16.5% clock increase yields exactly that when it comes to memory bandwidth!

Call of Duty Ghosts - PC Max Settings - tech
(hx) 05:37 PM CET - Nov,05 2013 - Post a comment / read (2)
As noted on DSO Gaming, there is a crack for the game that allows PC users with at least 4GB of RAM to play Call of Duty: Ghosts and bypass the 6GB requirement.

The crack seems to be available mostly on torrents so tread on that ground cautiously and use the file at your own risk, but you can easily search up the fix by looking for a file on search engines called: Call.of.Duty.Ghosts.RAMfix.Crack.Only-3DM

It's kind of a huge pile of bullcrap that Infinity Ward would pull something like this. It's either a showcase of trying to up-sell the game's next-generation status by forcing the requirement of higher system specifications or just a sign of lazy porting.

CoD: Ghosts - Nvidia Features - tech
(hx) 07:00 AM CET - Nov,05 2013 - Post a comment / read (1)
Nvidia has posted an interesting article about some of the PC-specific features that Nvidia owners will be able to use in CoD: Ghosts. Here's a taster:
On the PC, Call of Duty: Ghosts players receive the definitive experience, with assets, display resolutions, and textures that best the 720p and 1080p experiences offered by the “next-gen” Xbox One and PlayStation 4. With a NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphics card, PC players benefit massively from high-quality, high-precision NVIDIA HBAO+ Ambient Occlusion, NVIDIA TXAA temporal anti-aliasing, and in a forthcoming game update, NVIDIA GPU-accelerated animal fur, and NVIDIA GPU-accelerated PhysX effects.

If you're unfamiliar with these PC-exclusive features, here's a quick rundown:

  -  NVIDIA HBAO+ adds realistic Ambient Occlusion shadowing and shading around objects and surfaces that occlude light, with a considerably-higher degree of precision than previous AO techniques.
  -  NVIDIA TXAA temporal anti-aliasing eliminates the distracting movement of anti-aliased lines and edges, and also eliminates other artifacts associated with anti-aliasing. Edge anti-aliasing is comparable with 8xMSAA, but at the performance cost of 4xMSAA.
  -  NVIDIA GPU-accelerated animal fur will add high-quality, realistic, dynamically-reacting fur to Riley, NPC wolves, and multiplayer attack dogs.
  -  NVIDIA GPU-accelerated PhysX will add realistic, dynamically-reacting particle effects throughout the game, dramatically enhancing their appearance.
  -  Higher-resolution textures, effects and assets make full use of the available VRAM and system RAM of PCs, adding extra detail even at 3840x2160, the next-generation 4K Gaming resolution.

In the not too distant future we'll have a complete GeForce.com Call of Duty: Ghosts Graphics and Performance guide for those seeking further detail, but in the meantime we present below the first Call of Duty: Ghosts, max-setting PC screenshots, showing you how the blockbuster title shines on next-gen “4K Gaming” PCs, and how it app ears at the most popular PC gaming screen resolution, 1920x1080

  • Apple iPad Air is $479 at Walmart, Apple, Best Buy and Staples - Walmart has slashed $20 off the $499 MSRP for the 16GB iPad Air, bringing the effective price down to just $479. You would assume with the $20 savings that most people would then flock to Walmarts across the last to grab the tablet, but you don't have to do that. It has now been confirmed that several stores will be price-matching Walmart on this deal. This includes the Apple Store itself, as well as Best Buy and Staples. You You just have to ask, but they may ask you to bring in a Walmart ad. In the case of Staples, they've even listed the 16GB iPad Air at $479 straight up. If you were hoping to get the price match at your local RadioShack, then you're unfortunately out of luck. They're sticking with the $499 MSRP for the 16-gigger, but they did say that they are increasing trade-in values for old iPads, so you may be able to enjoy some increased savings by taking that route. And they're already honoring the new $299 price point for the iPad mini (non-Retina).
  • The iPad Air Review - The iPad Air is the most significant upgrade to the 9.7-inch iPad in its history. It’s lighter, more portable, more usable and faster than any previous iPad. It doesn’t fundamentally change what you can do with a tablet, but if you’re in the market for one the iPad Air really is the best iPad to date. Competition is definitely more stiff among the smaller tablets thanks to the Nexus 7, but in the nearly 10-inch tablet space it seems like Apple is going to continue to enjoy a great position there.
  • iPad Air Delivers 24 Hours of Battery Life as LTE Hotspot - With the display off and a single notebook tethered wirelessly to the iPad downloading at a constant 50KB/s, the LTE iPad 3 lasted 25.28 hours on a single charge. The new iPad Air moves to a much smaller battery (32.4Wh vs. 42.5Wh), but at the same time it enjoys much lower platform power. The A7 SoC is built on Samsung's 28nm LP process, while the A5X used in the iPad 3 was a 45nm part. Qualcomm's MDM9600 in the iPad 3 was also built on a 45nm process, compared to the 28nm process used on the MDM9615M (the same modem used in the iPhone 5s). An improvement of two process nodes on both the SoC and modem should account for something.
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Firmware Update Improves Battery Life - Shortly after general availability of the Surface Pro 2, Microsoft pushed out a firmware update that allowed the Marvell WiFi solution to drive down to even lower power states. I spoke with Microsoft after the update went live and immediately re-ran both of our battery life benchmarks on the Surface Pro 2. The improvement is significant. As a recap, both of our battery life tests are run with the displays calibrated to 200 nits and running a fixed workload. A faster system doesn't mean more repetitions of a workload, just that the system enjoys more time idle.
  • Google Nexus 5 with Android Kit Kat 4.4 review - Hardware specs include - A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Chipset with a Kriat 400 processor clocked in at 2.3 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU. The 2 Gigs of RAM stay put but the Nexus 4 will be available only in 16/32GB capacities. No more 8GB devices. The Nexus 5 is 4G/LTE capable with dual-band WiFi, hot spot creation, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP, GPS with AGPS and GLONASS support. It also supports wireless charging. The battery capacity is 2300 mAh a little better than the previous edition. Active noise cancellation is also on the cards thanks to a dedicated microphone.
  • Nexus 5 camera samples and first impressions - Google's Nexus smartphones don't have the best reputation when it comes to photography. The Galaxy Nexus's rear camera was a pretty big disappointment, and the Nexus 4's was little more than adequate, despite the introduction of new features like Photosphere. So will this year be any different? Google certainly seems to thinks so - the LG-built Nexus 5 is pitched as a device for capturing "the everyday and the epic," boasting a new HDR+ mode and optical image stabilization (OIS) while maintaining megapixel parity with the last-gen Nexus, with its 8MP rear shooter. It also boasts a larger 1/3.2-inch sensor and f/2.4 aperture. But is it any good in the real world?
  • Galaxy S3 Beats iPhone 5s and 5c in Touch Accuracy - Curious about which phone was the most responsive, Finnish tech measurement company OptoFidelity has put three of the more popular models around to the test. They used a robot finger to hit precise coordinates on the screens, and then measured the readings from the device vs. the known position of the robotic hand. The data show that the iPhone 5C and 5S both performed substantially worse than the Galaxy S3. "Because the touch accuracy is more even in Galaxy S3 than in iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, you get a lot less typing errors, and letters which are close to the edge are working better."
  • Galaxy S4, S3, Note 2 getting 4.3 + Gear support 'in the coming - Samsung has confirmed that the "premium suite" update pack for the Galaxy S4, S3 and Note 2 will be arriving on U.S. devices "in the coming weeks." The update includes Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, support for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch and Samsung's new KNOX enterprise security layer. According to today's press release some devices will start receiving the update today - and although no specific devices or carriers are mentioned, the leaked timetable points to today being the day for the Verizon Galaxy S4. Elsewhere, international Galaxy S4s started receiving their Android 4.3 updates a couple of weeks back, and these also included Galaxy Gear and KNOX support. Samsung also tells us the U.S. Galaxy S4 Active, S4 Mini and Galaxy Mega will receive similar updates "in the months ahead."
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids coming to the U.S. November 10 - Samsung has announced that the chunky, bright-colored Galaxy Tab 3 Kids will be headed to the U.S. from Nov. 10, priced at $229.99. The 7-inch tablet is essentially a Galaxy Tab 3 wrapped in a colorful exterior, with the option to switch into a second, kid-friendly operating mode alongside the standard Android/TouchWiz UI. Naturally for a kid-centric tablet you'll find a host of games and educational apps preloaded on the Tab 3 Kids, along with parental controls to keep tabs on what your kids can do.
  • LG G Flex Has a Curved Screen, Self-Healing Cover - LG has announced the G Flex, an Android smartphone that has a curved display and a self-healing rear cover. The G Flex is curved across the horizontal axis, which makes it somewhat banana-shaped. LG says this curve helps the phone fit better against the owner's face, boosts the earpiece volume by 3dB, allows the phone to rest more comfortably in the hand, and is more comfortable when placed in back pockets. In order to make the curved shape possible, LG developed a curved, plastic OLED display, which measures 6 inches across the diagonal and has 720p HD resolution
  • Sprint Offers LTE Progress Report - Sprint has detailed its wireless network plans for the next 15 months. During its quarterly earnings call with media, Sprint said that it is on track to cover 200 million POPs with LTE on its 1900MHz spectrum by the end of the year. Its 1900MHz LTE network will be finalized by mid-2014. At the same time, Sprint has already begun to deploy LTE in the former Nextel's 800MHz band, which it is repurposing for 4G. Sprint did not say where it is lighting up 800MHz LTE, nor when it expects to complete its 800MHz LTE network upgrades. The bigger picture concerns Sprint's 2.5GHz spectrum. Sprint plans to have 5,000 2.5GHz TD-LTE cell sites up and running by the end of 2013, and it will accelerate its 2.5GHz build-out during 2014. Sprint hopes to cover 100 million POPs with 2.5GHz LTE by the end of 2014. Sprint says it expects to see significant speed boosts in markets served by the 2.5GHz spectrum. On unloaded test sites, Sprint is seeing download speeds in the 50-60Mbps range. Moving forward, most Sprint devices will support LTE in the 800MHz, 1900MHz, and 2.5GHz bands. By way of comparison, Verizon's LTE network covers more than 300 million POPs; AT&T's will cover 270 million POPs by the end of the year; and T-Mobile's covers 202 million POPs.

You see, they can transform. Each of the six wheels can unravel to become almost feline-like springy legs. You might also equate this form of locomotion to a beetle or some other insect. This could help the rover transverse more challenging terrain where wheels wouldn't be as appropriate. Further still, the middle leg/wheel can function as an arm, grabbing rock samples and using tools stashed away on the main body. The video also depicts some other things that the ESA is working on, like a robotic forklift and a teleoperator robot for connecting service lines. Check it all out below.

Battlefield 4 Antialiasing Tip - tech
(hx) 05:10 PM CET - Oct,30 2013 - Post a comment / read (3)
The chaps over at HARDOCP have posted a tip for playing Battlefield 4 on Windows PC they came up with while putting the military shooter sequel through its paces for their technical evaluation. They encountered some odd results in the game's antialiasing, and have this preliminary tip for users looking to improve the game's visuals:
We are hard at work testing BF4, and the first thing we discovered was that the textures did not seem up to par for a new Frostbite 3 engine game. We quickly found out that by turning the "Antialiasing Post" (inherently FXAA) graphics setting to "Off," fixed this problem. The textures were now much sharper, clearer, and the fidelity in the entire game was better.

Post AA seems to be adding blur over the entire image, even though it does reduce aliasing on everything. It is the nature of FXAA, but it seems apparently bad in BF4 according to our testing so far. You have an interesting choice. We have a poll and a discussion thread which we would love to hear your feedback on what settings you prefer while you play BF4.

TechNews - Radeon R9 290X Review - tech
(hx) 01:13 PM CET - Oct,27 2013 - Post a comment / read (6)
  • Radeon R9 290X Review: AMD's Back In Ultra-High-End Gaming - After eight months of watching Nvidia go uncontested in the ultra-high-end graphics market, AMD has a new GPU based on existing technology that promises to challenge the top position. It gets mighty loud at times, but you can't ignore the R9 290X's price. It sells for no less than $1000 and comes equipped with 6 GB of fast GDDR5 memory. By all accounts, it's really well-suited for gaming at 2560x1440, it serves up playable performance at 5760x1080 in some games, but doesn’t quite move fast enough for 3840x216
  • Surface 2 - review - The Surface 2 represents a fresh start for Microsoft's tablet line. Sure, you could easily say that it's the second installment of the Surface RT (now simply called Surface), but with a new marketing campaign, a new name (Microsoft has dropped the RT branding entirely), beefed up internals and an updated operating system, Surface 2 is almost entirely new in every way, shape and form.
  • AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta V6 - AMD sends word that the new Catalyst 13.11 Beta V6 drivers are now available
  • Run Windows 8.1 For 90 Days Free -I wonder if a 90 day test drive would change some people's opinion of Windows 8.1?  In related news, The Microsoft Answers forum is abuzz with a problem that seems to affect many people trying to update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. It's a show-stopper that throws up two Blue Screens when the Win 8.1 installer reboots. Microsoft has a couple of suggestions for recovering from the problem, but at this point it doesn't look like the solutions fix the problem. Further confounding the situation, the problem existed back in June, with the Windows 8.1 Preview Milestone, and apparently hasn't been fixed.
  • Microsoft Releases IE11 Reliability Patch for Windows 8.1 - Without a large amount of fanfare and little explanation, Microsoft has released a patch for Internet Explorer 11, which is available for download through the normal Windows Update procedure. The patch is described on a Microsoft support page, which says simply that the file is supposed to improve "the reliability of Internet Explorer 11."
  • Students Can Get Microsoft Office 365 For Free -Beginning in December, Microsoft will be offering free Office 365 to all students at institutions that license Office Education under the Student Advantage Program.
  • KMS activate Windows 8.1 and Office 2013 - FaiKee has released a dodgy KMS tool can now activate Windows 8.1 by using a traditional Key Management Service workaround, and it works for all editions of Windows 8.1 too. This type of hack has long been used to "officially" activate Microsoft products, including Office and previous versions of Windows.
  • Microsoft Reports Record FY14 Q1 Revenue of $18.53 Billion - Microsoft has announced revenue of $18.53 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2013. Gross margin, operating income, net income, and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $13.42 billion, $6.33 billion, $5.24 billion, and $0.62 per share. Microsoft stock is up over 7% in after hours trading. These financial results reflect the deferral of $113 million of revenue primarily related to Windows 8.1 Pre-sales.
  • Mozilla's new Lightbeam download allows users to track trackers - Mozilla, the open-source software community responsible for the Firefox browser, has released a new download that allows users to identify who's tracking their Internet movements. Dubbed 'Lightbeam,' the free Firefox extension will enable users to see which third party companies are monitoring their online presence, a move that Mozilla states will 'illuminate the inner workings of the web.'
  • OS X Mavericks Review - The questionably named OS X Mavericks is out for all to purchase today. But should we trust this very incremental update? Are the performance updates really noticeable?
  • AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, U.S. Cellular to Sell Galaxy S4 Mini - Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S4 Mini will become available from the top U.S. network operators beginning in November. The GS4 Mini was first announced in May. AT&T, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon Wireless have all agreed to sell the phone. The Mini swaps out the S4's 5-inch FHD display for a qHD 4.3-inch display; it drops the 13-megapixel camera down to 8 megapixels; and changes out the quad-core processor in favor of a 1.7GHz dual-core processor. The user-facing camera rates 1.9 megapixels and the Mini includes many of the same imaging features found in its larger stablemate. The Mini also carries over the GS4's multitude of apps, such as S Translator, S Health, WatchOn, Samsung Hub, and others. The Galaxy S4 Mini has 8GB of internal memory (5GB accessible by users), 1.5GB of RAM, and supports microSD cards up to 64GB. It includes GPS and GLONASS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, and an IR blaster for the remote control app. Availability and pricing will be carrier dependent.
  • Galaxy Note 10.1-2014 Edition spotted in UK sporting 16GB of storage - A reader has just sent in this image from a Currys/PC World in the U.K. where the tablet is up on display at £499.99 for 16GB of storage and Wifi connectivity. Interestingly the processor is listed as "quad core," even though the model hitting the U.S. is an octa-core (but we wouldn't be surprised if this was a typo in the end). The tipster indicates that the store will actually sell you one starting next week, even though they're already on display this weekend. I don't have any other solid indication of pricing or availability at other stores, although some online retailers such as Clove have the tablet listed at £479.99 for the Wifi model.
  • Nokia Debuts Lumia 1520 with 6-Inch HD Screen - Nokia has announced the Lumia 1520, a device that is the first to take advantage of new features built into Windows Phone, including a high-definition display and quad-core processor. The 1520 boasts a 6-inch full HD ClearBlack LCD with Gorilla Glass 2, sunlight mode, and high sensitivity for use with gloves. The latest version of Windows Phone supports a third column on the screen, which means owners of the 1520 will be able to add more content and Live Tiles to their home screen. The 1520 is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and comes with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and support for microSD cards up to 64GB. The 1520 takes imaging seriously and includes a 20-megapixel PureView camera with dual LED flash, Carl Zeiss optics, lossless zoom, and optical image stabilization.
  • LG Fireweb Smartphone Powered by Firefox OS - The unveiling hardly comes out of left field, as LG had already stated that it wanted to work with Mozilla and build a smartphone powered by the Firefox OS. The physical design of the phone isn't the most exciting, borrowing some design cues from the company's lower-end L-Series phones. It only has a 4-inch display with a mere 480 x 320 pixel resolution, for example, a far cry from the 5-inch 1080p displays we see on more flagship-worthy devices. The rest of the specs on LG's first Firefox phone are similarly low-end. There's just a 1GHz single core Qualcomm processor under the hood, along with a 5MP camera, storage of 2GB to 4GB, microSD expansion, 3G connectivity and a smaller 1540mAh battery.
  • Apple Pushes iOS 7.0.3 to Fix Bugs - Apple made available a minor update to its iOS 7 operating system. The new platform software includes support for iCloud Keychain, which can be used to keep track of account names, passwords, and credit cards across Mac devices. According to the changelog, the system update also adds a password generator for Safari; updates the lock screen TouchID behavior and patches a lockscreen bug; returns web and Wikipedia search to Spotlight; fixes several iMessage bugs; improves iWork stability; eliminates a VoiceOver bug that impacted Siri and input sensitivity; and resolves an accelerometer calibration issue. iOS 7 is free to download over the air and is compatible with devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
  • Cover - The right apps at the right time - Think lock screen that learns which apps you use in various locations - home, work, car and out - and floats them to the lock screen as you go about your day, much like Aviate does with your home screens. Pretty slick idea, and it actually does go beyond the lock screen and the full usage of the phone. It's invite-only for now, so sit back and let the hype flow freely around you. Can't wait to try this, though, especially the sick transition between the lock screen and an app whose shortcut you picked.
  • NSA Monitored Calls Of 35 World Leaders - The National Security Agency monitored the phone conversations of 35 world leaders after being given the numbers by an official in another US government department, according to a classified document provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden. The confidential memo reveals that the NSA encourages senior officials in its "customer" departments, such the White House, State and the Pentagon, to share their "Rolodexes" so the agency can add the phone numbers of leading foreign politicians to their surveillance systems. The document notes that one unnamed US official handed over 200 numbers, including those of the 35 world leaders, none of whom is named. These were immediately "tasked" for monitoring by the NSA.
  • Canyon of Fire on the Sun - video - A magnetic filament of solar material erupted on the sun in late September, breaking the quiet conditions in a spectacular fashion. The 200,000 mile long filament ripped through the sun's atmosphere, the corona, leaving behind what looks like a canyon of fire. The glowing canyon traces the channel where magnetic fields held the filament aloft before the explosion. Visualizers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. combined two days of satellite data to create a short movie of this gigantic event on the sun.

A new 'muscle-enhancing' top by U.K.-based Funkybod.com gives men who haven't peaked in the pectorals a chance to fit in with all the other fist-pumping brawny folk. The padded undershirt effectively serves as the answer to a woman's padded bra, acting as a 'confidence booster' for men everywhere. The shirt, which costs about $48, is available in black, white and grey. The top is meant to compress unsightly man boobs and reshape them into a more muscular-looking build.

During its recent press event, Nvidia tried to illustrate the difference between G-Sync and V-Sync. As you may already know, G-Sync cannot be captured via regular cameras. Therefore, Nvidia claimed that a perfect V-Sync video (constant 60fps v-sync) is what G-Sync basically offers, even when the actual in-game framerate drops at 40fps.

Batman: Arkham Origins Performance Guide - tech
(hx) 07:01 PM CEST - Oct,25 2013 - Post a comment
Batman: Arkham Origins has just been released, and Nvidia's Andrew Iain Burnes has informed us about an interesting article that covers the graphical settings of it. Batman: Arkham Origins supports tessellation, a new DOF technique, TXAA, PhysX effects, HBAO+ and Percentage Closer Soft Shadows. According to Andrew, only PhysX and TXAA are exclusive to Nvidia cards (and HBAO+ as its an Nvidia technique), meaning that all other techniques should work with other GPUs. Here's a taster:
Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City are two of the finest open world games of this generation, with engaging side-activities, collectibles galore, and a revolutionary attack-counter attack combat system that can now be found in dozens of other games. With each release the PC version has come out on top, with superior texture and shadow resolutions, and PC-exclusive features like DirectX 11 Tessellation, Multi-View Soft Shadows, NVIDIA Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion, and NVIDIA GPU-Accelerated PhysX effects.

Recommended System Requirements

OS: 64-bit Vista, Win 7, Win 8, Win 8.1
Processor: Intel Core i5-750, 2.67 GHz / AMD Phenom II X4 965, 3.4 GHz
Memory: 4GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
DirectX: 11
Hard Drive Space: 20 GB

If you wish to enable the game’s many DirectX 11-enhanced graphics settings, a DirectX 11 GPU will be required, the earliest NVIDIA GPU with this capability being the GeForce GTX 460. Please note that a GPU faster than the recommended GeForce GTX 560 will be required to enable every DirectX 11 effect and NVIDIA enhancement simultaneously. Recommendations for max setting gameplay can be found here.

The folks at Avegant are working on an even more intriguing head-mounted display. Dubbed the Virtual Retinal Display, the headset eschews LCD screens in favor of a micro-mirror array that beams reflected light directly into the eyes. The current prototype offers a resolution of 1280x800 per eye, but the perceived resolution is supposedly much higher.
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 released - Microsoft is now offering the general availability Windows Server 2012 R2 to the public. Microsoft has also launched System Center 2012 R2, a new version of Windows Intune and more tools that have been updated to work with Windows Server 2012 R2. In this blog post, Microsoft goes over many of the new additions in the OS, such as improved storage features, better server virtualization capabilities, streamlined network functions and more. As I reported previously, Microsoft has also released new Remote Desktop apps for iOS, Android and Mac platforms designed to connect to Windows Server 2012 R2.
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop apps for Mac, iOS and Android - Last week, Microsoft quietly revealed plans to launch new Remote Desktop apps for iOS, Android and Mac OS X device that would connect to Windows Server 2012 R2. Today, Microsoft released those apps to the public, allowing a ton of smartphones and tablets to access a Windows PC remotely for free. The apps can be downloaded on the iOS App Store, Mac App Store and Google Play storefront. Microsoft released a Remote Desktop app for Windows 8 several months ago. These new apps have been offered by the company in part because Microsoft recently acquired certain assets of HLW Software, which had launched its own iTap Remote Desktop software for Windows for iOS, Android and Mac platforms. HLW Software has since removed those iTap apps from those download stores.
  • Microsoft launches Visual Studio 2013 RTM - Microsoft has a bunch of major new software releases to hype today. In addition to Windows 8.1 and Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry, the company has announced that the final releases of Visual Studio 2013, .NET 4.5.1, and Team Foundation Server 2013 are ready for download. • BitTorrent site IsoHunt will shut down, pay MPAA $110 million - isoHunt, a search engine for BitTorrent files founded more than a decade ago, has agreed today to shut down all its operations worldwide. The company, founded by Canadian Gary Fung, has also accepted a judgment that it must pay the movie studios that sued it $110 million. It's not clear how much of that the studios will actually be able to collect. Fung gave up his long legal fight just weeks from having to defend his site in federal court; a jury trial was scheduled to start on November 5 in a Los Angeles federal court. Earlier court rulings had already determined that Fung was liable for "inducing" copyright infringement, so the court trial would have largely been about damage control. The MPAA had stated studio lawyers would have sought as much as $600 million had the case gone to trial.
  • Scratch Wireless Offering Free Wi-Fi-Based Service - Scratch Wireless, an MVNO that runs on Sprint's network, today launched a new service offering that promises to deliver free calling, texting, and mobile data. Scratch is selling a single phone, the 2012-era Motorola Photo Q for $269, and lets customers make calls, send text messages, and surf the web all for free when connected to a Wi-Fi network. When Wi-Fi isn't available, Scratch Wireless devices will roam onto Sprint's network, where text messages will still be free, but voice and data cost extra. According to Scratch, it offers daily and monthly voice/data plans that can be used on Sprint's network when the user roams away from Wi-Fi. The 24-hour plan costs $1.99 for 30 voice minutes and 25MB of data, and the monthly plan costs $14.99 for 250 voice minutes and 200MB of data. Scratch does not have an agreement in place with Wi-Fi aggregators, such as Boingo, so customers are on their own to map out Wi-Fi hotspots and availability. Scratch does not require contracts or recurring monthly fees.
