Nvidia GeForce 334.89 WHQL Driver - tech
(hx) 07:31 PM CET - Feb,18 2014 - Post a comment
Today, NVIDIA has made available a new GeForce Graphics driver version, namely 334.89 WHQL. This release improves performance by up to 19% compared to previous driver versions (for GeForce GTX 770, 780, TITAN, or 780Ti card running F1 2013) and updates several SLI profiles such as for Assassin's Creed Liberation HD, The Crew, Shadow Warrior, and many others. In addition to that, the new version also fixes frame-related issues encountered in Deus Ex Human Revolution - Director's Cut, Ambient Occlusion problems spotted in Half Life 2, and the GeForce GT 730A bug that prevented the Rome 2: Total War game from running on the NVIDIA GPU. Moreover, this fresh update adds support for the GeForce GTX 750, GTX 750 Ti, and GTX TITAN Black graphics cards, fixes the LCD brightness problem when GeForce 9600M (GT) unit is used, and adds an SLI Enable/Disable option in the GeForce GTX 460's Control Panel. Therefore, if you consider installing this release, you should also know that, while the desktop-related packages are compatible with Microsoft's Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 OSes, the notebook configurations can only use the last 3 mentioned platforms.

TechNews - 5TB 3.5" Enterprise HDD - tech
(hx) 01:00 AM CET - Feb,16 2014 - Post a comment
  • 5TB 3.5" Enterprise HDD from Toshiba Announced - Toshiba Electronics Europe has just announced the amalgamation of the higher platter density with the higher number of platters, in an enterprise level 5TB 3.5" 7200 RPM drive. It will be equipped with either 6Gb/s SAS (MG04SCA) or 6Gb/s SATA (MG04ACA) interfaces, and can also be supplied with Toshiba's Sanitize Instant Erase (SIE) functionality. No information was given about release date and pricing – given the enterprise focus that Toshiba Electronics Europe is giving this product, I would imagine the focus would turn to local Toshiba representatives for individual pricing.
  • More than 200 million Windows 8 licenses sold - Microsoft has announced that it has sold 200 million Windows 8 licenses and the comment came from Tami Reller during the Goldman Sachs Technology & Internet Conference. This is a massive number by any count as selling 200 million of any type of product or licenses is surely a milestone worth celebrating but it is notable that Microsoft was rather quiet about sales figures as the last update came in May of 2012. Based on the current rate of sales, from launch to today, Windows 8 is selling at a rate of a little over 420,000 licenses per day. For reference, Microsoft sold roughly 240 million license of Windows 7 in a 12 month time period but it has taken Windows 8 15 months to hit 200 million sales. It's quite clear that, while 200 million is a massive number, it is at a slower pace than Windows 7.
  • HP To Charge For Updates And Service Packs - If you own an HP server, be prepared to keep your support agreement up to date. Or else. Beginning this month, HP is restricting access to firmware updates and service packs for its entire ProLiant server line, a product category that spans a wide range of products, from low-cost small business servers like the ProLiant MicroServer (starting price $359) all the way up to enterprise-class boxes that cost tens of thousands of dollars. Previously, that firmware upgrade was available to anyone, regardless of the server's warranty status or whether it was under a support agreement.

  • Google Now Makes It Easier to 'Text My Bro' - Google recently updated the Google Search app for Android devices and added some new features for voice-based commands. Specifically, Google Now can understand relationships between the owner and their contacts. Google points out users can now say, "OK Google, call Mom" or "text my wife" and Google will be able to find the right contacts. Google Now will also help users set up these contextual relationships if they haven't already. Google also recently updated Google Play Books for Android devices. The revised version of Play Books adds the ability to upload PDF or e-pub files to your library from the device. The settings and help sections have been moved to the main navigation menu. Last, Google resolved several bugs, including a fix to prevent the screen from going dark when the app is reading text aloud. Both Google Search and Google Play Books are free to download from the Play Store.
  • CyanogenMod 11 M3 builds now rolling out - Visit the CyanogenMod download page and you'll see CM11 M3 builds are starting to roll off the servers. "M" builds are milestones along the development process as the KitKat-based CyanogenMod 11 approaches release candidate, and eventually stable status. So M-snapshot builds are supposed to be more stable than nightlies, but may still contain a few bugs. At the time of writing we're seeing M3 builds for a wide range of devices including the Galaxy S4, HTC One and LG G2, along with many Nexus devices and legacy handsets. If you're already set up with a custom recovery on your device, you can hit up the source link to find the full list CM11 M3 builds ready for flashing.
  • Sprint No Longer Sure About T-Mobile Bid - Sprint is rethinking its intent to make a bid for T-Mobile after the idea was met with skepticism from government officials. Sprint Chairman Masayoshi Son and CEO Dan Hesse met with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission in recent weeks. Both agencies indicated a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile would face tough resistance from antitrust regulators. Though Son and Hesse knew the idea would be meet some pushback, they were surprised by the level of skepticism for the deal, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal. Sprint and T-Mobile contend that the only way for them to effectively combat AT&T and Verizon Wireless is to join forces. U.S. officials have, however, made it abundantly clear they prefer to have four national carriers and not three. The Journal says Sprint may yet make a play for T-Mobile, but will likely spend weeks or longer to weigh its options.
  • Nokia to Debut Android Phone - Nokia plans to announce a smartphone later this month running Google's Android operating system, rather than Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. The device, reports The Wall Street Journal, was already under development when Microsoft made its bid to buy Nokia's handset business, a transaction that has yet to close. Nokia's Android phone is meant to target emerging markets and will run a modified version of Android that will not feature the Google Play Store. Instead, the phone will come with Nokia's own application store and apps, such as HERE Maps, and Mix Radio. The device is expected to make an appearance at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, according to the Journal's unnamed sources. Nokia did not confirm the Journal's report.
  • Bitcoin-Stealing Mac Malware Distributed via Download.com - All you OS X users out there should be aware of this. Security researchers from SecureMac continue to analyze the Bitcoin-stealing malware that targets Mac OS X users. Experts warn that the threat is being distributed under various names on a number of websites, including on MacUpdate and Download.com. So far, the malware, dubbed OSX/CoinThief, has been spotted as BitVanity and StealthBit on GitHub and as Bitcoin Ticker TTM and Litecoin Ticker on Download.com and MacUpdate. In the case of BitVanity and StealthBit, the source code published on GitHub appeared legitimate. However, precompiled binaries available on the code repository site were malicious. Variants of Bitcoin Ticker TTM and Litecoin Ticker distributed on Download.com and MacUpdate have also been found to disguise the Bitcoin-stealing malware. Experts say the Trojan could be distributed on other websites as well, under different names.

  • Neurocam Headset monitors brainwaves, records memories! - At first look, this device may look to you as a lab experiment, but its surely the first of many improvements to follow. Called the Neurocam Headset, this cool wearable accessory is developed by a Tokyo-based team. It comes with a head-mounted camera that reads your brainwaves and automatically starts recording when the user experiences an interest in something, of course, using your cellphone camera. What triggers a spike in brain activity depends on the interests the person has. The cell phone camera is notified through an app and the devices camera records a short 5-second video clip of that moment.

  • Best Graphics Cards For The Money: February 2014 - Although it defies any semblance of logic, the prices of mid- to high-end Radeon cards continue to increase. Worse, the plague is spreading to the mid-range R9 270 family, which was unaffected up until recently. Here's the sad state of AMD's portfolio at the time of writing compared to last month: the Radeon R9 270 is up $30 to $210; the Radeon R7 270X is up $20 to $230; the Radeon R9 280X is up $20 to $440; the Radeon R9 290 is up $50 to $580; and the Radeon R9 290X is up $60 to $680.  Plain and simple, those prices are destroying any semblance of value the mid-range to high-end Radeon brand had. A few months ago, AMD was dominating the recommendations $300 and up. But now, the most expensive card we can get behind is the $140 Radeon R7 260X. Above that, Nvidia's GeForce GTX 660 claims the recommendation right under $200, displacing the Radeon R9 270.

  • Comcast web mail servers hacked, all users at risk - Hacking group NullCrew FTS declared today that it had exploited a security flaw in Comcast's Zimbra webmail server. It's believed that the group used what is known as a LFI exploit or local file inclusion vulnerability to obtain usernames and passwords of Comcast ISP users. The hacking group claims it used this exploit to gain access to the Zimbra LDAP and MySQL database which house the user accounts and passwords. The group posted earlier on pastebin.com a list of what they gained access to, but with no usernames or passwords listed. The posting has since been removed by pastebin. Every Comcast ISP user has a master account, which is accessible through their Zimbra webmail site. This account can be used to access your payment information, e-mail settings, user account creation and services you purchase from Comcast. Even if you do not use their mail service, you still will have a master account. It is strongly recommended that, if you are a Comcast user, you change your password as soon as possible.

TechNews - Seagate's 6TB Helium-filled HDDs - tech
(hx) 09:15 AM CET - Feb,07 2014 - Post a comment
  • Seagate's 6TB Helium-filled HDDs Coming in Early 2Q 2014 - Currently, Western Digital is the only company with a 6 TB drive on the market, dubbed as the Ultrastar He6. This drive is a world's first in that it uses helium, is hermetically sealed, and has the largest capacity on the market. The helium-based drive was released back in November, and now Seagate is vowing to offer its own 6 TB solution this April. Unfortunately, Seagate did not provide additional details other than the drive will be marketed to the enterprise sector. Obviously, Seagate can't use the same technology that helped Western Digital cram seven platters in a standard 3.5 form factor, but it may be similar. Seagate's solution is expected to have six platters that use Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology (pdf). The solution may also use Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology that would have 25 percent higher density, allowing Western Digital to offer 7.5 TB capacity in a typical 3.5-inch form factor.
  • Adobe issues emergency Flash update for Windows and Mac - Adobe is recommending that users update their Flash Players immediately -- especially those who frequent Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. "Adobe is aware of reports that an exploit for this vulnerability exists in the wild, and recommends users apply the updates referenced in the security bulletin."

But his most interesting comment by far was a heretical recommendation for his former company: Apple, he thinks, should release an Android handset.

The Lumia smartphones would come with a 2-year contract with AT&T. In case of existing AT&T users, it will be considered as an upgrade while non-AT&T users will have to sign up for a new contract. Customer may have to bear the regional taxes even though the new phone is free of cost. Microsoft associates at the store would examine the customer's old smartphones for defects and missing components. Non-working or damaged devices will not be considered for the offer. The terms of the offer also mention that the smartphone to be traded-in should have all the accompanying accessories.

In reality, I think he's getting the followers because he seems like a really sweet kid that's just happy being his weird self. My worry is that when his viewership growth slows or declines, he might start thinking that it was his fault because his videos weren't interesting enough. He may not understand that the internet's attention span is incredibly short and that the change has nothing to do with him, his videos, or his actions. I just hope that a kid like this doesn't attach his self-worth to the fickle nature of the internet.

  • Intel's voice recognition doesn't use the cloud !! - Intel has a solution, says the company's head of wearables Mike Bell in an exclusive interview with Quartz. Intel partnered with an unnamed third party to put that company's voice recognition software on Intel mobile processors powerful enough to parse the human voice but small enough to fit in the device that's listening, no round trip to the cloud required. The result is a prototype wireless headset called "Jarvis" that sits in the wearer's ears and connects to his or her smartphone. (Perhaps coincidentally, Jarvis is also the name of the voice recognition and artificial intelligence software in the Iron Man franchise.) Jarvis can both listen to commands and respond in its own voice, acting as both a voice control and a personal assistant. Not only is Intel's voice recognition solution more responsive than those offered by its cloud-obsessed competitors, but it also leads to what Bell calls "graceful degradation," which means that it works even when the phone it's connected to is not online.
  • Google to Buy Artificial Intelligence Startup DeepMind for $400M  - Google is shelling out $400 million to buy a secretive artificial intelligence company called DeepMind. Google confirmed the deal after Re/code inquired about it, but declined to specify a price. Based in London, DeepMind was founded by games prodigy and neuroscientist Demis Hassabis, along with Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman. This is in large part an artificial intelligence talent acquisition, and Google CEO Larry Page led the deal himself, sources said. According to online bios, Hassabis in particular is quite a talent, a child prodigy in chess who was later called “probably the best games player in history” by the Mind Sports Olympiad. DeepMind has only a landing page for a website where it describes its business as building learning algorithms for simulations, e-commerce and games. Profiles on LinkedIn indicate the company is about three years old. Sources said Founders Fund is a major investor in DeepMind, along with Horizons Ventures. Skype and Kazaa developer Jaan Tallin was an investor and advisor (not a founder, as we initially described him).

The move came after the company faced a dispute with British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB, trading as 'Sky'), which argued that Microsoft's SkyDrive brand infringed on its own trademark. But it seems that Microsoft may be facing a further dispute over its new OneDrive branding. One.com has offered cloud storage solutions under the 'Cloud Drive' moniker for the last three years, allowing customers to synchronise their files to their online storage. Thomas Medard Frederiksen, chief operating officer of One.com, said that his company is now "consulting trademark experts" following Microsoft's rebranding, stating that OneDrive is "a name that is very close to One.com's own cloud service." One.com says that "OneDrive, from Microsoft, is a similar product - with a similar name, that will lead to confusion."
  • Windows 8.1 Update Will Hide Tile Interface By Default? - Microsoft is once again planning to alter the way its Start Screen works in Windows 8.1 Update 1. While the software giant originally released Windows 8.1 last year with an option to bypass the "Metro" interface at boot, sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have revealed to The Verge that the upcoming update for Windows 8.1 will enable this by default. Like many other changes in Update 1, we're told the reason for the reversal is to improve the OS for keyboard and mouse users. We understand the latest internal builds of Windows 8.1 Update 1 have the boot-to-desktop option enabled by default, a change that Wzor noted earlier today. The update is still in development, and Microsoft could alter this further before it ships, but it's currently being changed to appease desktop users. It may seem like a minor change, but the move reverses parts of Microsoft's original vision for Windows 8. While some critics argued Microsoft simply forced the Start Screen interface onto desktop PCs with little regard for keyboard and mouse users, the company pitched its "Metro" environment as the future of Windows. With the interface booting by default, developers had an opportunity to place their apps front and center on millions of PCs.
  • Facebook uses 10,000 Blu-ray discs to store 'cold' data - If you thought Netflix and iTunes would make optical discs a thing of the past, think again. Facebook has built a storage system from 10,000 Blu-ray discs that holds a petabyte of data and is highly energy-efficient, the company said Tuesday. Facebook said last year that it was exploring Blu-ray for its data-center storage needs, and on Tuesday it showed a prototype system at the Open Compute Project summit meeting in San Jose, California. It designed the system to store data that hardly ever needs to be accessed, or for so-called 'cold storage.' That includes duplicates of its users' photos and videos that Facebook keeps for backup purposes, and which it essentially wants to file away and forget. The Blu-ray system reduces costs by 50 percent and energy use by 80 percent compared with its current cold-storage system, which uses hard disk drives, said Jay Parikh, Facebook's vice president of infrastructure engineering, in a talk at the Open Compute summit. The company expects to be able to increase the capacity of the system to five petabytes over time, he said. Blu-ray discs are a good option for cold storage because they cost less to buy than hard disks and there's a lot of room for manufacturers to increase the storage density of Blu-ray, said Jason Taylor, Facebook's director of infrastructure, in an interview.

  • Angry Birds website hacked after NSA-GCHQ leaks - Video game developer Rovio has confirmed that hackers defaced its Angry Birds site with an image entitled Spying Birds, featuring an NSA logo. The attack followed the publication of leaks that indicated the US spy agency and its British counterpart GCHQ had obtained data released by at least one of the Finnish firm's games. The company said it did not "collaborate or collude" with any government spy agency. It added it had quickly fixed its site. "The defacement was caught in minutes and corrected immediately," said marketing manager Saara Bergstrom. "The end user data was in no risk at any point. Due to how the internet name resolution works, for most areas it was not visible at all, but some areas take time for the correct information to be updated. CHQ GCHQ says that its surveillance activities are "authorised, necessary and proportionate" "This attack looks to be similar to the New York Times attacks from last year."
  • Yahoo Reports Attack on Mail Accounts - Another day, another breach. In yet another reminder of the importance of using different passwords across different websites, Yahoo said Thursday that attackers had attempted to gain access to Yahoo Mail accounts using usernames and passwords collected from a breach on a third-party site. "Recently, we identified a coordinated effort to gain unauthorized access to Yahoo Mail accounts," Jay Rossiter, Yahoo's senior vice president for platforms and personalization products, wrote in a blog post Thursday. "Based on our current findings, the list of usernames and passwords that were used to execute the attack was likely collected from a third-party database compromise." Mr. Rossiter did not say how many accounts were affected, only that Yahoo had reset passwords for affected accounts and added two-step verification, a system that asks users to enter a second, one-time password. The company said it was also working with law enforcement to investigate the breach and had stepped up security on its systems.
  • GoDaddy Admits Hacker Tricked Them - An update in the @N account hacking case has just come through from GoDaddy, one of the companies involved in the somewhat convoluted social engineering case. The company admits that one of its employees was 'socially engineered' into giving out additional information which allowed a hacker to gain access to Naoki Hiroshima's GoDaddy account. The hack was performed by calling up PayPal and GoDaddy to gain access to Hiroshima's personal email, which was then used to extort the @N Twitter user handle from him.
  • Amazon Realizes It Makes Almost No Profit, Will Raise Shipping Fees - Amazon investors might have finally heard the news they have been waiting for: The retailer is raising shipping fees. Amazon has 237 million active customers but as a general rule makes almost no profit. Thursday's announcement that the company was considering raising prices by as much as 50 percent on its $79 Prime shipping program could mean $500 million for its skimpy bottom line. The news came in a conference call when the Seattle-based retailer discussed its fourth-quarter earnings. The announcement helped deflect disappointment that Amazon's torrid growth might be slowing. Amazon has been pouring money into new ventures, ranging from new warehouses to free videos for Prime subscribers. The eternal question is when it will turn all that expansion into profit.

  • Southern snow leaves motorists stranded (video) - Living in the North means learning to deal with seasonal snow fall. It means practicing in an empty parking lot when the first few inches fall. Equipping snow tires and knowing just how quickly one can safely go when the white stuff starts falling is seemingly ingrained into the DNA of Yankee drivers. That, along with our fleets of snow plows and salt trucks, makes it easy to shake our heads and chuckle when our Southern friends get a dusting of powder that shuts down entire towns. What's happening south of the Mason-Dixon now, though, is not funny at all. Snow, freezing rain and perilously low temperatures have embraced the southern US for the second time this year, and the results for motorists have been catastrophic, with traffic jams lasting over night. CNN reports on one woman, Rebekah Cole, whose nine-mile drive home started Tuesday afternoon and had run well into Wednesday morning. She was only half way there. Cole described the epic jam as something out of a "zombie movie."

AMD Mantle beta driver Catalyst 14.1 available - tech
(hx) 10:13 AM CET - Feb,02 2014 - Post a comment
For a while there, AMD's Mantle was in a weird position. Battlefield 4 had updated to be Mantle-ready, and the benchmark for Star Swarm was released and ready to make use of it too. But the AMD driver that would enable people's graphics cards to make use of it had not been issued. Here we are on Saturday night (in Pacific time, at least) and AMD has now announced that the Mantle-tastic Catalyst 14.1 beta drivers are available to download. You can get them here. Remember, only certain AMD graphics cards with the "graphics core next" architecture in them can make any use of Mantle. So unless you have an R9/R7 or HD 8000/7000 card, you won't be able to test that out. However, it's still a Catalyst beta driver, so there are a few across the board improvements. Here are some of those "resolved issues":
- Ground texture flickering seen in Total War: Rome 2 with high settings (and below) set in game
- Flickering texture corruption when playing Call of Duty: Ghosts (multi-player) in the space station level
- Blu-ray playback using PowerDVD black screen on extended mode
- Streaming VUDU HD/HDX content on Sharp PN-K321 (DP) causes the right-side half to flicker in and out
- Black screen happened after wake up the monitor
- Full screen issue at rotation in DX9 mode
- Video window black screen when using Samsung Kies to play video
- Crysis2 negative scaling in outdoor scene
- Crysis2 has insufficient CrossFire scaling in some scene
- Red Faction: The game has no or negative crossfire scaling with DX9 and DX11
- Age of Conan has corruption and performance issues with crossfire enabled
- Company of Heroes shadows are corrupted when using crossfire
- Resident Evil5 's performance is unstable when display mode set to Window mode
- Total War: Shogun 2 flickering menu/text
- Frame rate drop when disabling post-processing in 3DMark06
- Negative Crossfire scaling with game "The Secret World" in DX11 mode
- F1 2012 Crashes to desktop
- Tomb Raider Hair Simulation Stutters on CFX
- Negative CrossFire scaling experienced in Call of Duty
- Battlefield 3 performance drop on Haswell systems
- Choppy video playback on 4k Video
- VSync ON Tearing with 2×1 Eyefinity SLS CrossFire
- Far Cry 3 – Game flickering while changing resolutions
- Display corruption and BSOD occurs when extending a display after disabling Multiple GPU SLS array
- Flickering seen when enable three 4kx2k panels at the same time
- No Video, just a black screen when setting Chrome to run in "High Performance" when playing certain video clips
- Image crashed on Starcraft game
For the pure high-end scenario – a 290X or similar GPU with a high-end CPU – Mantle can still offer performance benefits from the GPU workflow optimizations it provides. A 7-10% performance increase is not a dramatic difference, but it is 7-10% better performance than AMD had yesterday.

Star Swarm Mantle Benchmark Is Now Available - tech
(hx) 06:38 AM CET - Jan,31 2014 - Post a comment
Star Swarm is a real-time demo of Oxide Games' Nitrous engine, which pits two AI-controlled fleets against each other in a furious space battle. Originally conceived as an internal stress test, Oxide decided to release Star Swarm so that the public can share our vision of what we think the future of gaming can be. The simulation in Star Swarm shows off Nitrous' ability to have thousands of individual units onscreen at once, each running their own physics, AI, pathfinding, and threat assessments.
Here are the key features of Star Swarm:

Up to 10,000+ units onscreen at once - Imagine what kind of games can be made when developers can count on simulating battles and scenes at this scale

First look at AMD's Mantle technology - See the performance benefits of AMD's new API layer for yourself if you have compatible (Graphics Core Next-based) hardware

Benchmark mode generates performance information - Since Star Swarm is a dynamic simulation rather than a canned demo, run it several times to see what Nitrous' real-world gaming performance is on your machine

Film-style rendering - Nitrous uses Object Space Lighting, which renders objects onscreen using the same techniques used by the film industry, including real-time film quality motion blur, on your PC

  • Windows 8.1 Update 1 reportedly set for March 11 release - ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley says one of her most "accurate and trusted sources" told her Windows 8.1 Update 1 will be released March 11; she further states that Windows Phone 8.1 will be released at about the same time as well. Foley says there's no indication if Microsoft will release future upgrades similar to Update 1 prior to the next version of Windows, which has the codename "Threshold." Recently leaked screenshots have displayed new functionality for Windows 8.1 with the update, including the ability to pin Metro-style apps to the taskbar. On Wednesday, Paul Thurrott reported the update will also include a close button for Metro apps, similar to desktop windows, making it easier for mouse and keyboard users. One thing neither Foley nor anyone outside Microsoft has figured out is if the Start menu will make its return in Update 1. It's believed the Start menu will make its return with Threshold at the latest, and Foley says she'd be "surprised" if it arrived with Update 1.
  • Bill Gates says he will never come back to Microsoft full time - Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has been making the TV news rounds today to promote the just released 2014 annual letter from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. However, Bloomberg TV decided to ask him some Microsoft-themed questions when Gates appeared on the cable network. As he has done many times before, Gates did not indicate any chance he will return to working at Microsoft full time when asked that question today. He stated, "My full-time work will be with the foundation for the rest of my life." He did say he will "help out part time" with Microsoft. Indeed, he has already stated that he will be very involved with helping whomever is selected as the company's new CEO.
  • LogMeIn is killing free remote access - People who currently use the free version of the LogMeIn remote desktop software will have to prepare for a big, and for most an unwelcome, change. The company announced today that it will no longer offer a free version to download and will force current users to switch to their paid software. Free LogMeIn users will have seven days of continued use after they log into the program beginning today. After that, they will have to pay to continue to use the program. The price levels include support for up to 2 PCs for $49 a year, up to 5 PCs for $129 a year and and up to 10 PCs for $229 a year. By contrast, the free version could support up to 10 PCs. Owners of the paid LogMeIn Ignition apps for iOS and Android will also be affected by this change but the company claims they will offer "significant discounts, as well as generous terms to ease the transition" for those users.
  • Google explains reasons behind 30-minute service outage - Following one of the longer cross-service outages for Google in recent memory, the search and software giant sent out an apology and explanation for today's occurrences. According to the Official Google Blog, an internal system that sends out configuration information for systems beyond it encountered a software bug that sent out incorrect commands to several areas. It only took from 10:55am PT when the bug was first seen to 11:02am when users began seeing massive outages in Gmail, Google+, Drive and other services. Roughly 12 minutes later while engineers were still in the process of figuring out what was happening, the initial system that sent out the bad information had self-corrected and began to properly configure other systems. Google claims nearly all users' services were back up and running by 11:30, which seems to be consistent with the general consensus among users.

According to a press release issued by the security firm, hackers managed to infiltrate over 100,000 "smart" appliances which have the ability to connect to the internet, in order to send out spam emails en masse. The incidents, which occurred between late December and early January, saw "waves of malicious email, typically sent in bursts of 100,000, three times per day, targeting enterprises and individuals worldwide". The attack is one of the first of its kind, and makes good use of the various security flaws typically seen in these home appliances.

Backblaze, the makers of a cloud-based online backup service, has released the results of a hard drive reliability test for three leading manufacturers. The findings indicate two winners and one clear loser. In terms of annual failure rates, Seagate led the way with, on average, almost 14% of their 1.5 terabyte drives failing within the first year. The failure rates of Seagate's 3TB and 4TB drives, while lower, still led all other manufacturers. A failure, according to Backblaze, constitutes having to replace a drive in a server pod. While Western Digital followed closely behind, Hitachi drives still demonstrated a clear advantage with a lower than 2% percentage failure rate across their 2, 3, and 4TB offerings. The results of the test are based on a wide range of models from all manufacturers, but Backblaze singled out the Seagate Barracuda Green 1.5TB drive as a particularly poor performer, exhibiting only an average age of 0.8 years.

  • Best Graphics Cards For The Money: January 2014 - Last month's graphics card news was dominated by a shortage of high-end Radeon cards, resulting from high demand and too few GPUs. This time around, we have good and bad news. The good news is that Radeon R9 280X, 290, and 290X cards are now much more readily available online. The bad news is that pricing is even worse this month than it was back in December. The cheapest flagship Radeon R9 290X cards sell for $600, rather than their $550 launch price. Those employ AMD's reference thermal solution too, which we cannot recommend after putting in hours of subsequent testing. To get a partner board with third-party cooling you'll have to pay a minimum of $700, which is staggeringly unfortunate.
  • SanDisk X210 256 And 512 GB: Enthusiast Speed; OEM Reliability - It's almost as quick as SanDisk's Extreme II and Samsung's 840 Pro in most metrics, and the price tag isn't overly inflated. SanDisk does say it costs more to manufacture the X210, but market volatility typically masks the premium. Expect to pay less than $1/GB. Tack on five-year warranty coverage, along with the fact that there really aren't any competing OEM-derived SSDs in this performance bracket, and there's no denying the X210's attractiveness to serious client and SMB environments. Shoot, CDW sells the 512 GB model for $320. That's a phenomenal price for any high-capacity drive.
  • HP Returns to Smartphone Market with Two Phablets - HP today announced that it is re-entering the smartphone market and debuted two new devices that are headed to India. The HP Slate6 VoiceTab and HP Slate7 VoiceTab are large-screened phones that are meant to consolidate the smartphone and tablet experience into a single device. The Slate6 has a 6-inch 720p HD LCD screen and the Slate7 has a 7-inch 1280 x 800 LCD screen. Both offer quad-core processors, voice-calling capabilities, and user-facing stereo speakers. They each include a 2-megapixel user-facing camera and 5-megapixel main camera with flash and 720p HD video capture. The Slates include 16GB of built-in storage and support microSD cards up to 32GB for additional storage. The Slates are equipped with dual SIM card slots, and support 3G networks. They run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Pricing and availability were not immediately disclosed. HP has been in and out of the smartphone market over the years. A decade ago it sold Compaq-branded Windows Mobile smartphones. It eventually abandoned those and purchased Palm and webOS. It failed to develop new Palm and webOS devices, however, and eventually shuttered Palm and sold webOS to LG. HP hasn't said if it will offer smartphones to U.S. buyers.
  • You will still need to activate Windows XP after April 8th - With Windows XP now set to lose all security and software update support from Microsoft on April 8th, some Windows 7 users might be wondering about the future of "XP mode" as well. ZDNet reports that, according to a statement from Microsoft, the company has no plans to release a patch for Windows 7 that does away with "XP mode". Having said that, Microsoft states that people who continue to use that feature to run older programs in Windows 7 could still face security risks because Windows XP won't get any more updates in less than three months. In other words, it's best to simply stop using "XP mode" after April 8th.
  • Apple to Refund $32.5 Million in Disputed Kids' In-App Purchases - Apple Inc will refund consumers at least $32.5 million to settle a longstanding complaint that the technology company billed U.S. consumers for charges incurred by children through mobile apps without their parents' consent. Under the terms of the settlement, announced on Wednesday by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Apple also will be required to change its billing practices to ensure it obtains consent from parents before charging for such in-app spending. "Whether you're doing business in the mobile arena or the mall down the street, fundamental consumer protections apply," said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. "You cannot charge consumers for purchases they did not authorize." She estimated that children spent millions of dollars without their parents' knowledge, with one mother telling the agency that her daughter spent $2,600 while playing the game "Tap Pet Hotel." Ramirez said the commission had received "tens of thousands of complaints" from consumers over the unauthorized purchases through apps such as Dragon Story and Tiny Zoo Friends.
  • Samsung rolls out its Sochi Winter Olympics app - Samsung this week has unveiled its official application for the Sochi Winter Olympics, which begin next month. The app is pretty good, breaking things down by sport, country and athletes, with easy links to schedules. You can get more information on the event venues in Russia, check out videos and photo galleries - and even see which events are wheelchair accessible. It's easy to follow your favorite athletes and sports as well. As of the time of this writing, you're only able to install the app on Samsung devices. (Reading the press release again, though, it sounds like that might just be an oversight, so check back to see if more devices are added.) You can also install from the Samsung App Store, if that's how you roll.
  • 4K Ultra HD Coming to Blu-ray - TWICE magazine recently spoke with Andy Parsons, Blue-ray Disc Association (BDA) spokesperson, and Victor Matsuda, the BDA's global promotions committee chairman, about where the format is now, and where it's headed in a digital world. They reveal that the BDA recently approved the addition of 4K/UHD to the Blu-ray Disc specification.

With the HBO GO app on your PlayStation system and an HBO subscription via your cable or satellite provider, you'll have unlimited, on-demand access to your favorite HBO shows, like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and True Detective. HBO GO offers every episode of every season of the network's best shows. You can also enjoy hit movies, sports, documentaries, and comedy specials, as well as special behind-the-scenes extras.
  • Vinyl Won't Make A Comeback Until We Have More Record Presses - Guys! Have you heard? LPs are coming back. Collecting records is so trendy. Digital sucks. The future is vinyl. Yes, you've heard, because people have been hyping vinyl nostalgia for years. A recent report from Nielson SoundScan fanned the flame, revealing that LP sales climbed 32 percent last year, increasing for the sixth year in a row. On the flip side, digital album sales dropped for the first time since iTunes launched. Look at that spike; how can you deny analog music's supremacy? But if you actually crunch the numbers, vinyl records are still a measly 2 percent of total album sales. To give it some perspective, the number of LPs sold in 2013 is less than 1 percent of the Harlem Shake's YouTube views.
  • Supercomputer models one second of human brain activity - The most accurate simulation of the human brain to date has been carried out in a Japanese supercomputer, with a single second's worth of activity from just one per cent of the complex organ taking one of the world's most powerful supercomputers 40 minutes to calculate. Researchers used the K computer in Japan, currently the fourth most powerful in the world, to simulate human brain activity. The computer has 705,024 processor cores and 1.4 million GB of RAM, but still took 40 minutes to crunch the data for just one second of brain activity.
  • The sum of 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + ... until infinity is somehow -1/12 - What's fascinating is that this idea that the sum of all natural numbers is -1/12 actually popped up way back in 1735 (as pointed out by Kottke). But seeing all those numbers actually come out to -1/12 is a whole 'nother story. So watch physicists Tony Padilla and Ed Copeland from the University of Nottingham walk through the process of getting -1/12. The video by Numberphile is fascinating because it's mind-blowing but also because you can see the real joy from the wonderful people proving this

  • Superman-Batman Delayed until May 8th, 2016 -  Warner Bros. has pushed production on the untitled "Superman-Batman" movie to the second quarter of this year and it will now be released on May 6, 2016. The Peter Pan origin story "Pan" is being put in its place on July 17, 2015. "Superman-Batman" will now square off against a Marvel film which Marvel has still not announced. The film is still in pre-production with Henry Cavill set to star alongside Affleck, and Zack Snyder is on to helm. In a statement, Warners said the decision was made to "help fully realize the vision." Warners is still casting the film including the main villain role which sources tell Variety is still in Joaquin Phoenix's court. This marks another film to leave what was turning out to be a very crowded 2015 summer, with "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" and the new “Star Wars” also moving out of the frame. One continuing moving part is what this means for Affleck and his always busy schedule. Affleck was planning on directing "Live by Night" following production on "Superman-Batman," with Warners already dating "Night" for Dec. 25, 2015.

At the BUILD developer conference in April 2014, Microsoft will discuss its vision for the future of Windows, including a year-off release codenamed 'Threshold' that will most likely be called Windows 9. Here's what I know about the next major release of Windows. Here's what we know about Threshold:

Windows 9. To distance itself from the Windows 8 debacle, Microsoft is currently planning to drop the Windows 8 name and brand this next release as Windows 9. That could change, but that's the current thinking.

BUILD vision announcement. In case it's not obvious that the Sinofsky era is over, Microsoft will use BUILD to provide its first major "vision" announcement for Windows since, yes, Longhorn in 2003. Don't expect anything that grandiose, but the Windows team believes it needs to hit a happy middle ground between the KGB-style secrecy of the Sinofsky camp and the freewheeling "we can do it all" days that preceded that. As important, the firm understands that customers need something to be excited about.

No bits at BUILD. Microsoft will not be providing developers with an early alpha release of "Threshold" at BUILD, and for a good reason: The product won't even begin development until later that month. Right now, Microsoft is firming up which features it intends to deliver in this release.

Metro 2.0. Maturing and fixing the "Metro" design language used by Windows will be a major focus area of Threshold. It's not clear what changes are coming, but it's safe to assume that a windowed mode that works on the desktop is part of that.

Three milestones. Microsoft expects to deliver three milestone releases of "Threshold" before its final release. It's unclear what these releases will be called (Beta, Release Candidate, etc.) or which if any will be provided to the public.

April 2015 release. Microsoft is currently targeting April 2015 for the release of Windows 9 "Threshold."

(hx) 07:57 AM CET - Jan,06 2014 - Post a comment
NVIDIA has taken stage in Las Vegas at CES to announce some great new things, and among them is the Tegra K1, their latest processor. Making a huge jump from the Tegra 4 the all new Tegra K1 brings 192 cores to the table. This chip, which NVIDIA calls a super chip, will be fully programmable by applications, and will allow all of the cores to be used in parallel. This year NVIDIA has some large plans with bringing products into consoles and cars, and the Tegra K1 helps bridge that gap. Following the announcement of the 192 CUDA-core Tegra K1, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang went on to announce that Epic Games will be bring their Unreal Engine 4 to the masses via the Tegra K1. The Unreal Engine is used in a ton of games on the market to improve graphics and with the combination of Unreal Engine 4 and the 192 CUDA-core Tegra K1, both organizations are working to gaming to the next level. The demos given on stage looked quite impressive with fantastic detail but it's certainly something we'll all need to go hands-on with in order to fully appreciate.

  • Samsung Intros 8Gb RAM Chip for Mobile Devices - Samsung has announced a new memory chip for smartphones, tablets, and laptops. The module is an 8Gb, low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) DRAM chip on a single 1GB die. It is fabricated with a 20nm processes. According to Samsung, four can be combined together to form a single 4GB RAM module. The 8Gb LPDDR4 DRAM chip uses a Low Voltage Swing Terminated Logic (LVSTL) I/O interface. Samsung says this enables data transfer rates of 3.2Gbps per pin, which is twice the speed of today's LPDDR3 DRAM modules. Samsung claims its new chip offers 50% higher performance, but uses 40% less energy, making it ideal for high-end UHD smartphones and tablets. The chip will reach volume production next year.

  • Target Confirms Encrypted PIN Data Stolen - Hackers who stole data for up to 40 million credit cards and debit cards used in Target stores removed encrypted data with personal identification numbers - but the theft isn't expected to compromise card holder accounts - the retail giant said Friday. According to the company, Target does not have access to nor does it store the encryption key within its computer systems. When a Target customer uses a debit card in one of the company's stores and enters his or her PIN, the number is encrypted at the keypad with a widely used security program known as Triple DES, the company said. Triple DES is the common name for the Triple Data Encryption Algorithm, a standard designed to thwart efforts to crack encrypted data. The PIN data can only be decrypted when it is received by the company's external payment processor, Target said.
  • India's central bank acknowledges Dogecoin as virtual currency - In a press release by India's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India, Dogecoins were acknowledged as a legitimate virtual currency - amongst the likes of competitors such as Bitcoin and Litecoin. However, the moment he showed them the gift certificates, the QR code containing the private key for the amount caught the eye of Reddit user NastyMan9 who simply made a post about the gaffe. However, another Reddit user milkywaymasta had already snatched the Bitcoin by scanning the QR code by then.
  • How a Hacker Can Break Into Your Laptop With Just an iPhone  - That gentle hum of your laptop could be leaking your most sensitive documents. That's according to three of Israel's most respected cryptologists, who published a report this week outlining how they were able to extract data from a running laptop just by listening to the sounds it makes. Which only goes to show: No matter what you do–and no matter how serious your encryption–there will always be a way for a hacker to pilfer your data. Whether they do it over WiFi or bluetooth–and now via sound–your precious information is never truly safe. "Many computers emit a high-pitched noise during operation, due to vibration in some of their electronic components," write Adi Shamir, Eran Tromer and Daniel Genkin in their report, RSA Key Extraction via Low-Bandwidth Acoustic Cryptanalysis. "These acoustic emanations are more than a nuisance: they can convey information about the software running on the computer, and in particular leak sensitive information about security-related computations."
  • How Did The NSA Hack Our Emails? - Professor Edward Frenkel discusses the mathematics behind the NSA Surveillance controversy.
  • Security vulnerability reported in Samsung's Galaxy S4 - According to the Wall Street Journal, the security platform for Samsung's Galaxy S4 smartphone suffers from a vulnerability that could allow malware programs to track emails and record data communications. Researchers at Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev say that earlier this month they discovered the flaw, which affects phones with the new Knox platform for government and corporate clients. Researcher Mordechai Guri told the Wall Street Journal that the vulnerability could allow a hacker to easily intercept secure data communications on Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones with the Knox platform enabled. This prompted a statement from Samsung, which noted that they were looking into the claims, but maintained that "the core Knox architecture cannot be compromised or infiltrated by such malware". The Knox platform isn't preloaded on the Galaxy S4, and despite being preloaded on devices such as the Galaxy Note 3, the researchers have said that the problem only affects the S4 smartphone.
  • Samsung's releases Galaxy Gear commercial - The advertisement, which is 2m 30s long, has an individual wearing the smartwatch following around an attractive female. Right after this video was taken this douchebag and his 5 friends took off laughing and joking about it for about 10 minutes until he was slammed into the concrete by 4 coppers, handcuffed and arrested by the Queensland Police. Assault charges along with 7 other charges were laid so a somewhat satisfying end to the story.

  • Apple's Mac Pro on sale for $2999 - Apple has announced that its Mac Pro ($2999) is now available. The design is surely bold for a machine of this caliber and with any new layout, we will be curious to see if Apple was able to work out all of the initial kinks with the new design. One thing to note, though, if you are preparing to plop down $2999+ for the Mac Pro (which you can order here by the way), it does not come with a keyboard or a mouse. While you could argue that anyone buying a Mac Pro likely already owns these peripherals, at $2999, margins must be slim if Apple is not willing to include these two basic items. FYI, they are sold out!!! If you want one, you have to wait until February.
  • Windows Phone users given 20GB of free SkyDrive space for one year - If you own a Windows Phone device, you might want to check your email right about now for what appears to be an early Christmas gift. Microsoft has sent out a message informing Windows Phone users that they can now claim an extra 20GB of free space on their SkyDrive service for one year. The email, which was sent early on Saturday morning, stated that the 20GB of free space is in addition to the standard 7GB of free storage already available for all SkyDrive users, which means that most people will have a total of 27GB of space to store their files. However, it's unknown if people who still have the 25GB of free SkyDrive space, given to older Windows Live account holders, are eligible to receive this new offer. Besides it looks like the free 20GB offer works even with folks who have the grandfathered 25GB of free SkyDrive space, meaning they can get a whopping 45GB of free storage for a year.  Microsoft previously announced that people who purchase a new Surface 2 or Surface Pro 2 tablet can also get 200GB of free SkyDrive storage for two years.
  • Samsung Debuts GamePad for Android Phones - The GamePad resembles a gaming control unit from today's living room gaming consoles. It supports a number of Samsung smartphones, cradling devices with screens ranging from 4 inches to 6.3 inches. It connects to smartphones via Bluetooth and an associated application. The GamePad provides physical controls for games, and connects to TVs through an HDMI cable or AllShare Screen Mirroring. The GamePad requires Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and Samsung recommends it be used with devices such as the Galaxy S III and S4, and the Note II and Note 3. The GamePad includes support for NFC for easy device pairing. The Mobile Console app for the GamePad is available for download through the Samsung App store. The Samsung GamePad is launching first in European markets with others to follow in the coming weeks. Samsung has not shared specific plans to offer the GamePad in the U.S. yet.
  • Wink feature allows Google Glass owners to take photos - Google has added wink functionality to Google Glass which will make it easier than ever to take photos with a wink of an eye. The device's display does not even have to be on for the feature to work and is said to be more efficient than other means of image capturing with the gadget.
  • Samsung Galaxy Gear (U.S.) finally gets new firmware  - The firmware update brings the software to MK7. The big seller is you now have better notifications from non-Samsung apps (but you'll have to dive down a couple layers in the Gear Manager app to activate them). Notifications themselves could still see some improving. In Gmail, for example, receiving a single e-mail gives you the ability to actually read the body, as well as the sender and subject. But if you get multiple emails at once, the Gear shows you the sender and subject line, but that's it - and all the subjects run together. (The Qualcomm Toq suffers from this same malady.)
  • Jolla Smartphone Powered by Sailfish OS, Supports Android Apps - Some former Nokia engineers have gone off on their own to create the Sailfish OS and now the first Jolla Smartphone has launched. For the time being, it's only available to buy in Finland and they're limiting production to about 450 units as of today. This first batch is reserved for people who already preordered the Jolla Smartphone through wireless carrier DNA of Finland, so if you're not already on the list, you'll have to wait for the next batch. What makes Sailfish OS a little extra special is that it is its own operating system with its own apps, but it also supports Android apps too. As far as hardware goes, you can expect a 4.5-inch qHD IPS display, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 16GB storage, 1GB RAM, microSD expansion, and LTE support, all for an MSRP of 399 Euro. Jolla is currently in talks to expand distribution through UK mobile providers, as well as in other European countries.
  • Lawmakers Aim to Require Smartphone Kill Switch - California Senator Mark Leno and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon plan to introduce legislation that will force smartphone makers and wireless network operators to add a kill switch to mobile devices. The bill, which will be formally introduced early next year, is a response to the carriers' reluctance to add a kill switch voluntarily. Carriers argue that kill switches could be used by hackers to disable phones, but lawmakers believe they could be used to protect people from prying thieves. Gascon worked with Samsung to add a kill switch to its smartphones, but carriers shot the idea down earlier this year. Gascon also believes that giving smartphone owners the ability to kill lost/stolen devices remotely will help reduce theft of the devices in the first place.
  • There's Finally An iOS 7 Jailbreak - This Jailbreak is untethered, so reboots will be normal, it's Mac or PC, and the process should work for any iDevice running iOS 7.0 through 7.0.4. As usual you should proceed with caution and remember that there's always a risk of bricking your phone if something goes wrong. But if you've been waiting three months for this moment, go forth and tweak to your heart's content.

  • Winamp isn't dead yet - The popular Winamp media player and its associated website were supposed to be shut down by its owners at AOL on Friday, December 20th. That deadline has come and gone and, lo and behold, both are still up and running as of this writing. This fact would seem to lend credence to rumors that AOL is in serious talks with a company that would in theory acquire Winamp. The thinking is that the negotiations would give the site and the software a stay of execution until the deal is finalized. So far, the only company that has been named as a possible buyer is Microsoft. For its part, AOL has been completely silent about the future of Winamp beyond the December 20th deadline notice that was posted a month ago.
  • NSA Paid Extremely Influential Security Firm For A Backdoor - As a key part of a campaign to embed encryption software that it could crack into widely used computer products, the U.S. National Security Agency arranged a secret $10 million contract with RSA, one of the most influential firms in the computer security industry. Documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden show that the NSA created and promulgated a flawed formula for generating random numbers to create a "back door" in encryption products, the New York Times reported in September. Reuters later reported that RSA became the most important distributor of that formula by rolling it into a software tool called Bsafe that is used to enhance security in personal computers and many other products.
  • Target Investigating Massive Data Breach - Nationwide retail giant Target is investigating a data breach potentially involving millions of customer credit and debit card records, multiple reliable sources tell KrebsOnSecurity. The sources said the breach appears to have begun on or around Black Friday 2013 - by far the busiest shopping day the year. According to sources at two different top 10 credit card issuers, the breach extends to nearly all Target locations nationwide, and involves the theft of data stored on the magnetic stripe of cards used at the stores. Minneapolis, Minn. based Target Brands Inc. has not responded to multiple requests for comment. Representatives from MasterCard and Visa also could not be immediately reached for comment.

  • The Cubli: a cube that can jump up, balance, and 'walk' - The Cubli is a 15 x 15 x 15 cm cube that can jump up and balance on its corner. Reaction wheels mounted on three faces of the cube rotate at high angular velocities and then brake suddenly, causing the Cubli to jump up. Once the Cubli has almost reached the corner stand up position, controlled motor torques are applied to make it balance on its corner. In addition to balancing, the motor torques can also be used to achieve a controlled fall such that the Cubli can be commanded to fall in any arbitrary direction. Combining these three abilities -- jumping up, balancing, and controlled falling -- the Cubli is able to 'walk'.
  • McLaren To Use Force Field Of Sound Waves Instead Of Windshield  - Frank Stephenson is McLaren's chief designer and has hinted at a new system to replace the wipers. It is thought to involve using ultrasound to send 30kHz waves across the windshield, which would keep it clear of any debris, even those really horrible insect remains that can build up and obstruct your view. How does it stop such debris? By creating a force field that stops rain, snow, or insects ever reaching the windshield. If they can't touch it, then the glass will remain clean and clear.

SteamOS vs. Win8.1/Ubuntu Benchmarks - tech
(hx) 12:26 PM CET - Dec,21 2013 - Post a comment / read (1)
Phoronix has posted a benchmark battles featuring Valve's SteamOS vs. Windows 8.1 and Valve's SteamOS vs. Ubuntu 13.10. Here's an excerpt:
Overall, these results aren't too surprising (aside from the GTX 680 Xonotic performance oddity) given NVIDIA's proprietary driver is generally running at comparable speeds across all supported platforms -- even between Windows 8 and Linux -- and that SteamOS hasn't deviated too much away from upstream Debian at this time to warrant any real performance changes compared to Debian/Ubuntu.

Overall, the SteamOS vs. Windows 8.1 results aren't too far removed from other Linux vs. Windows NVIDIA GeForce graphics card benchmarking results delivered in the past on Phoronix. Generally the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver can deliver comparable performance to that of the Windows GeForce driver due to the largely shared code-base between platforms, which again is the case here with SteamOS just being a derivative of Debian Linux.
Simply, NVIDIA provides the same performance on all platforms :-)
