  • Slysoft DVD Ripper Owner Found Guilty in Criminal Action  - The owner of the company behind a suite of popular DVD ripping tools has lost his case against several large Hollywood studios and their technology partners. • Explore the temples of Angkor, Cambodia with Google Maps - Uncover the tangled trees and towering temples of Angkor with Google Maps.
  • Scientists Invented An Injectable Oxygen Particle - Scientists have developed a new microparticle filled with oxygen that can be injected into the blood stream, keeping you alive even if you can't intake air into your lungs. The microparticles are actually tiny capsules (2-4 micrometers tiny) made of a single layer of lipids surrounding a small bubble of oxygen gas. The capsule is suspended in a liquid so that the bubbles don't get any bigger (which would make them deadly, FYI). Upon injecting the capsule-filled liquid into the bloodstream, the capsules crash into your red blood cells, transferring the oxygen gas from the capsule to the cell. About 70% of the oxygen injected successfully makes its way into the blood stream this way. This injection method was so successful that the scientists managed to keep rabbits with blocked windpipes alive for fifteen whole minutes.
  • What if the Moon was a Disco Ball? - Tell NASA to hold off on this idea, it seems there a few kinks in basic physics we need to work out first.
  • What's Inside A Can Of Tear Gas? - There's a lot of stuff in tear gas, and a lot of it is essentially on fire.
  • How To Weaponize Icicles - It has been tested before, even by The Mythbusters (one of our favorite shows): Can you kill somebody with ice as ammo? Guns obviously won't work, as Adam and Jamie demonstrated. The bullets are too brittle and do not withstand the pressure of both the expanding hot gases and the target impact. But what if a nice big chunk of ice is shot from a rubber based weapon? The acceleration is a lot less abrupt, yet the terminal velocity can be substantial. The Slingshot Channel tests this! See how ice cubes, but also artificial icicles fare against soft and hard targets, including ballictic gelatin...

They can generate a power of 600 volts, which is 5 time stronger than the electricity generated in the standard US wall socket. Electric eel can produce electric shock strong enough to knock down a horse.

  • MSI A88XM-E35 Motherboard Review: Micro-A88X for $68 - The A88XM-E35 does have one significant flaw. This is the lack of power delivery heatsinks, which when using a high-end Kaveri APU can result in restarts during heavy CPU loading

  • Microsoft Bringing Back Start Menu And Windowed Apps - Microsoft has announced that the Start menu will be coming back to Windows 8.1 and showed off what it will look when it arrives later this year. This is a huge win for those of you who have wanted a Start menu on Microsoft's latest version of Windows, and it will likely silence some critics of the platform. Another new feature that will be coming is that you will be able to run modern apps in a windowed environment too. The Start menu will be returning to Windows in a future 8.1 update, which is in contrast where we heard that the Start menu would come to Windows with Windows 9.
  • How Dropbox Knows When You're Sharing Copyrighted Stuff - For years now, Internet users have gotten used to the risk of having files and content they share through various online services be subject to takedown requests based on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and/or content-matching algorithms. But users have also gotten used to using services like Dropbox as their own private, cloud-based file storage and sharing systems, facilitating direct person-to-person file transfer without having to worry about such issues. This weekend, though, a small corner of the Internet exploded with concern that Dropbox was going too far, actually scanning users' private and directly peer-shared files for potential copyright issues. What's actually going on is a little more complicated than that, but shows that sharing a file on Dropbox isn't always the same as sharing that file directly from your hard drive over something like e-mail or instant messenger.

In effect, the price has been dropped to $160 per month for four smartphones using a 10GB data allotment. The price now matches exactly that charged by AT&T for the same number of lines and same amount of data. AT&T reconfigured its Mobile Share plans in February and has been advertising them heavily.
  • T-Mobile to Do Away with Employer Rate Plan Discounts - Beginning April 1, T-Mobile will no longer offer monthly discounts to employees of certain companies. In the past, T-Mobile offered these discounts to help close large corporate sales. Given the changes T-Mobile has made to its service plans and device purchasing policies over the last year, T-Mobile feels the practice of offering employer discounts is now outdated. In its place, T-Mobile will offer those employees $25 toward the purchase of a new device. "This change is about simplifying wireless for everyone, including employees of small and large companies alike," said T-Mobile CEO John Legere in a statement. "It's simple, clear and transparent – like everything we do."

Windows 7 outgains Windows 8/8.1 in market - tech
(hx) 09:09 AM CEST - Apr,02 2014 - Post a comment / read (4)
March was the fifth full month of availability for Microsoft's latest operating system version: Windows 8.1 continues to steadily grow while Windows 8 managed to stay flat, allowing the duo together to finally crack 11 percent market share. Meanwhile, with only a week left of support, Windows XP still has more than 27 percent of the pie. The latest market share data from Net Applications shows that Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have gained a combined 0.62 percentage points (from 10.68 percent to 11.30 percent). More specifically, Windows 8 gained 0.03 percentage points (from 6.38 percent to 6.41 percent), while Windows 8.1 grabbed an additional 0.59 percentage points (from 4.30 percent to 4.89 percent). Meanwhile, Windows 7 outgained them both by jumping 1.46 percentage points (from 47.31 percent to 48.77 percent). After Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 did better combined than Windows 7 for three months straight, their predecessor has come back with a vengeance.

It's really only a matter of time until we're paying to respawn!

In FB/Oculus related news, Oculus chief technology officer John Carmack has spoken out about Facebook's acquisition of Oculus VR. The former id studio founder addressed the 'self-focused' and 'short-sighted' concerns raised following the sale, while also speaking out about his own concerns. His main one being that the sale takes away from what Oculus could have ultimately become as a standalone company, while also sending a message that startup tech companies will aim for the goal of acquisition over innovation.

TechNews - Office for iPad is official - tech
(hx) 12:07 PM CET - Mar,29 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • Microsoft Makes Office Free for iPhone and Android Phones - Microsoft today updated Office for the iPhone and Android smartphones and made the application suite free for home users. Previously, the app required a subscription to Office 365, which carried a monthly fee. iPhone and Android smartphone owners can now open, edit, and create Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on their smartphone for no charge. Business users will still need to subscribe to Office 365 in order to access Office on their smartphone. The change comes just after Microsoft announced Office for the Apple iPad. Office for the iPad is free to download, but is limited to read-only unless iPad owners subscribe to Office 365.
  • Office for iPad is official, downloads now available - Microsoft has finally announced Office for the iPad at its event in San Francisco today which will finally bring its productivity suit to iOS. The Office applications can be downloaded from here: Word | Excel | Powerpoint.
  • Apple gets 30 percent cut of Office 365 subscriptions - Microsoft and Apple's CEOs were congratulating each other Thursday, via Twitter, on the launch of Office for iPad, and now we know why Apple's leader Tim Cook might be very happy Microsoft brought Word, Excel and PowerPoint to their tens of millions of tablets. Re/code has confirmed with Apple that they will get a 30 percent cut of any revenues generated from Office 365 subscriptions if they are made within the iPad apps. Considering that there may be a lot of iPad owners who have yet to sign up for Office 365, that could represent not just a new revenue stream for Microsoft but also a significant boost for Apple's bottom line as well. Of course, people who already have Office 365 subscriptions, like the 3.5 million people who already signed up for the Home Premium version, won't see any of their money going to Apple.
  • This Little-Known iOS Feature Will Change the Way We Connect - A new iOS app called FireChat is blowing up in the App Store. But it's not the app itself that's causing such a stir, it's the underlying networking technology it taps into. The idea behind FireChat is simple. It's a chatting app. After registering with a name - no email address or other personal identifiers required - you're dropped into a fast-moving chatroom of “Everyone” using it in your country. The interesting aspect, however, is the "Nearby" option. Here, the app uses Apple's Multipeer Connectivity framework, essentially a peer-to-peer feature that lets you share messages (and soon photos) with other app users nearby, regardless of whether you have an actual Wi-Fi or cellular connection. You read that correctly. You're able to send and receive messages even when you don't have a data connection. FireChat accomplishes this magic by allowing each device to connect directly to others nearby using Bluetooth, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, or traditional Wi-Fi networks. Because you're connecting directly with other users, you don't actually need to be connected over Wi-Fi or a cellular network.
  • AT&T's Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Earns KitKat Update - AT&T today made Android 4.4 KitKat available to its variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. • Nvidia's Pascal to use stacked memory, proprietary NVLink interconnect - During his opening keynote at the Nvidia GPU Technology Conference, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang offered an update to Nvidia's GPU roadmap. The big reveal was about a GPU code-named Pascal, which will be a generation beyond the still-being-introduced Maxwell architecture in the firm's plans. Pascal's primary innovation will be the integration of stacked "3D" memory situated on the same substrate with the GPU, providing substantially higher bandwidth than traditional DRAMs mounted on the same circuit board.
  • Microsoft releases source code to MS DOS 1.1 and 2.0 - In this age of touchscreen and voice command interfaces, it's sometimes hard to believe that less than 40 years ago, we just used keyboards to interact with our personal computers. Today, Microsoft gave us a helpful reminder of that fact by announcing it is making the original source code for MS DOS 1.1 and 2.0 and Word for Windows 1.1a to the public for the first time. In a blog post, Microsoft says it worked with the Computer History Museum on this project. Roy Levin, the distinguished engineer and managing director for Microsoft Research, stated, "Thanks to the Computer History Museum, these important pieces of source code will be preserved and made available to the community for historical and technical scholarship." The source code can be found on the group's website for MS DOS 1.1 and 2.0 and for Word for Windows 1.1a. People who choose to download the code must agree to use it for non-commercial purposes; the code may also not be posted anywhere else on the Internet.
  • Microsoft offers Windows XP users $100 off select Windows 8 PCs  - With the Windows XP end-of-support date now less than three weeks away, Microsoft has yet another deal trying to woo users off the ancient 12-year-old operating system. The company is offering $100 off new Windows 8 PCs in its Microsoft Stores to anyone who can present their existing Windows XP device to a store associate. There are a few catches though. First of all, the deal is limited to select PCs, a list which is only available in-store. Furthermore, all the computers must cost at least $599. Microsoft provided us with a seperate link for the deal, but the page wouldn't load completely in Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP. Even in Chrome, however, while the 24 computers offered did load, none of the Microsoft Store pages indicated that an XP machine was detected, and thus there was no indication of an additional $100 discount when attempting to buy online. Apparently if you wait long enough, Microsoft will be paying you to take a Windows 8 machine just to move you off of the XP dead center :-D LOL
  • Puget: Windows 8 is not our fault, but we have to clean up after Microsoft's terrible UI decisions - Puget has an interesting blog post sharing some of its experience on how customers have reacted to Windows 8, the operating system’s weak adoption, and what they’re doing to ease the transition. As a custom system builder, the company argues that Windows 8 may not be their “fault” but it is directly tied to customer experience and thus it has to do something about it.
  • Hackers already attacking ATMs as Microsoft's Windows XP deadline - Just 14 days remain until Microsoft cuts off support for Windows XP and as we have reported before, the 12 year old operating system is used in 95 percent of all ATMs. Now a new report by software security company Symantec claims that hackers are already finding ways to attack these cash machines via a combination of malware and hardware. One of those methods is to install a specific malware called Backdoor.Ploutus, which was first discovered in 2013 in Mexico. Hackers used it to get money out of ATMs via an external keyboard. A variant of that software, called Backdoor.Ploutus.B, was later found in early 2014. It has not only been written in the English language but had been modified so that hackers could simply send a SMS command to the infected ATM when another mobile phone connected to it. Symantec says they were able to replicate this kind of attack in their labs. They claim that protecting older ATMs that still have Windows XP installed from this kind of method will be "more challenging" and offer a number of ways banks can protect their machines, not the least of which is upgrading to Windows 7 or 8. Many banks are already in the middle of their ATM OS upgrade and play to pay Microsoft lots of money to continue to support Windows XP past April 8th until that task is finished.  It is important to note that many ATMs run Windows XP embedded (toolkit and runtime) which will not reach an end of life until January of 2016.
  • Google Takedown Notices Surge 711,887% In 4 Years - A new paper published in the Virginia Journal of Law and Technology shows that the number of DMCA notices received by Google increased 711,887 percent in four years. The increase can be credited to a few copyright holders and industry groups such as the RIAA, who started an avalanche of takedown requests after the SOPA and PIPA bills died in Congress. Yeah, I don't use Google anymore...they kept only zillions of infected pages.
  • LG to Push Knock Code to G2, G Flex in April  - LG today announced it is prepared to extend the availability of its Knock Code feature beginning next month. Knock Code lets LG device owners use a pattern of knocks to wake up and unlock their smartphone. It was first shown off on the LG G Pro 2 at Mobile World Congress. According to LG, the G2 and G Flex will be first to receive a firmware update in April that enables the feature. LG didn't say if the update will be made available to all markets. LG eventually plans to extend Knock Code to the bulk of its Android smartphones.

Facebook to acquire Oculus VR for $2 billion - tech
(psolord) 05:48 AM CET - Mar,26 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
Facebook intends to acquire virtual reality hardware company Oculus VR for $2 billion, a price that consists of approximately $1.6 billion in stock and $400 million in cash, it said in a press statement Tuesday. During a conference call Tuesday afternoon, Zuckerberg said that purchasing Oculus means Facebook has now made an "ambitious, long-term bet" on each of its three long-term goals: connecting everyone, understanding the world and building the knowledge economy. He named Internet.org and Facebook's artificial intelligence research group as the other two bets. Zuckerberg said that he sees Oculus as an opportunity to move beyond the console and toward ubiquitous computing. He doesn't expect Facebook to make money off of selling Oculus hardware; instead, it might become a ubiquitous world for communication that might contain advertising. In the near future, he said the goal is to build out Oculus and make its platform affordable and ubiquitous. He declined to comment on when a consumer model of the Rift will be released.

Zuckerberg's Facebook status update about the acquisition provided a little more color about the company's intentions with Oculus, particularly in expanding it beyond gaming. "Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face - just by putting on goggles in your home," he explained.

NVIDIA launches $3,000 GeForce GTX Titan Z - tech
(hx) 10:12 PM CET - Mar,25 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
Nvidia has just announced the GeForce GTX Titan Z, a $3,000 dual-Keplar GPU graphics card that can supercharge PCs with a total of 5,760 processing cores, and 12GB frame buffer memory. To my untrained eye, then, it essentially sounds like two Titan Blacks duct taped together. I'm sure that in practice it's a little bit more complicated.

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti Roundup - The chaps over at PC Perspective have rounded up a handful of video cards today and put them to the test. The quietest card was the one with just a single fan, the PNY GTX 750 Ti XLR8 OC that registered 31 dbA at idle and 31.9 dbA under a full gaming load. Pricing and availability can be a hassle for anyone looking for the PNY or Galaxy cards - they are currently only for sale on each company's own website.  The EVGA however is widely available on Amazon.com and Newegg.com, starting in the $175 range.  If the other two models can actually be purchased reliably for $159 then they present a value proposition against the EVGA model
  • NVIDIA Announces Spring 2014 GeForce Game Bundles - For purchasers of the GeForce GTX 660/760 and above, NVIDIA will be including a voucher for a Steam copy of the survival horror game Daylight. Daylight is a game we have admittedly not heard much about thus far, but a bit of research tells us that it comes from Zombie Studios, the developers responsible for the Spec Ops and Blacklight series of games, among others. More excitingly, this will be the first game released that uses Unreal Engine 4, coming out ahead of other titles such as Epic’s own Fortnite. Daylight is set to retail for $15, so this won’t be quite as aggressive a bundle that the outgoing AC4 bundle was.
  • AVAST: Cutting off Windows XP support is a mistake - Anti-virus software maker AVAST claims 23.6 percent of its users still have Windows XP installed on their PC and called Microsoft's decision to cut off support on April 8th a "big mistake". In a blog post, AVAST claims that the elimination of patches for XP "will create severe security issues". It says that 23.6 percent of its 211 million customers are still using XP on their PCs and seemed to suggest that many of them could not afford to upgrade to a more recent version of Windows. AVAST stated, "Abandoning Windows XP is a big mistake, especially since Microsoft has not been very successful in transitioning XP users to newer systems." The company also claims that the security problems connected to the end of support for XP will extend beyond just the computers that have the OS installed on their hard drives

The change notes indicate the app has been rewritten in order to make "aggressive battery savings." Microsoft says that the app can be left running in the background all day with no noticeable impact on battery life, but it had to disable push notifications for group chats in order to realize those efficiency gains. Users can elect to turn the group chat push notifications back on, though their impact on battery life is not clear.
  • Google keyboard update comes with cloud synced personlized - Google has rolled out an update to its own keyboard app on Android in the Play Store, the update is significant in that it now comes with personalized word suggestion synced from the cloud from other Google services. Not to be confused with the "personal dictionary", this adds another scope to the experience by syncing personal auto suggested (saved) words from Chrome browser, Gmail, Calendar, Google+, and Drive. After applying the update, the user is given a prominent warning of the new feature, perhaps saving embarrassment for synced unsavory words used in the other Google products, and also because it is enabled by default.

NVIDIA: DirectX 12 Is A Major Stride for Gaming - tech
(hx) 09:23 PM CET - Mar,20 2014 - Post a comment / read (13)
Microsoft today introduced DirectX 12 at the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. DX12 is Microsoft's latest version of the graphics API that is the dominant standard in the growing, $25 billion PC gaming industry. Developers have been asking for a thinner, more efficient API that allows them to control hardware resources more directly. Despite significant efficiency improvements delivered by continuous advancement of existing API implementations, next-generation applications want to extract all possible performance from multi-core systems. Developers also want to take direct advantage of advanced GPU hardware features, from which developers are currently insulated to provide fool-proof usage. DirectX 12 was designed from scratch to provide the infrastructure for these advanced applications.

Looks like DirectX 12 will mirror many of the improvements AMD implemented in its own Mantle API. The big news today was that DX12 will support more than just the PC and will work on existing hardware. Microsoft will bring DX12 to all of its platforms, including the Xbox One and, if I understand correctly, Windows Phone. Which hardware will be DX12-compatible? AMD said all of its Graphics Core Next-based Radeon GPUs (i.e. Radeon HD 7000 series and newer) will work with the new API. Nvidia pledged support for all Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell (i.e. GeForce GTX 400 series and newer) parts. The keynote included a demo of Forza 5 running in DirectX 12 mode atop an Nvidia GPU. Finally, Intel said the integrated graphics in its existing Haswell processors will also have DX12 support. All in all, Microsoft estimates that 100% of new desktop GPUs, 80% of new gaming PCs, and 50% of PC gamers will be able to take advantage of the new API.

Titanfall PC Video Card Benchmark - tech
(hx) 09:34 AM CET - Mar,19 2014 - Post a comment
With frantic combat and fluid mechanics, Titanfall is precisely the sort of game you'd want to play on max quality with no hiccups -- perhaps even across multiple graphics cards and monitors. That's easier said than done without support for SLI and Crossfire, which is among other issues that have affected many players. On the bright side, Respawn, Nvidia and AMD are working on updates. In the meantime, you should be able to determine approximately where your rig stands with these results of GeForce cards running Titanfall at 1920x1200 on high with 4xAA and 16xAF:
At those settings, the GTX 580 and GTX 760 comfortably exceeded 60fps while the GTX 650 Ti Boost and GTX 750 Ti managed 40 and 45fps. Those numbers aren't too surprising considering the minimum specs call for an HD 4770 or 8800 GT, so most modern cards should be able to handle the game in some capacity, even if it means reducing certain settings. Stay tuned for our full breakdown.

  • Evaluating AMD's TrueAudio and Mantle Technologies with Thief - Wrapping things up, even with the launch of Thief I'm not sure much has changed for TrueAudio at the moment. Subjectively speaking, Thief's convolution reverb effect just isn't that impressive due to how overdone it feels, so while it shows us a bit of what the TrueAudio hardware is capable of it's nowhere near being the killer app for the technology. On the other hand the Tuscany demo, though just a simple spatialization demo, is very impressive for how accurate and realistic it sounds. The catch is that it's just a demo.
  • Mozilla kills Metro version of Firefox - Just four days before it was due to ship, Mozilla has scrapped the Metro version of Firefox citing low adoption of the Windows 8 Metro interface -- which Microsoft now calls 'Modern UI'. Johnathan Nightingale, Mozilla's Vice President of Firefox, announced the news in a blog post. Poor testing, lots of bugs, low number of users....sounds like www.healthcare.gov :-) LOL. Seriously though.. Windows needs to go talk to Google and work something out so they can use Android apps. I know that'll mess up the whole ecosystem competition of every big company trying to get every to use their own cloud stuff complete with email and the like. But Windows mobile is going to go the way of the Zune if they don't figure something out.
  • A Cheaper Version of Microsoft Office Is Coming Soon - Microsoft will soon be offering a new version of Office at a lower price: Office 365 Personal, which will cost $70 a year or $7 a month. • iPhone 6 mass production in Q2 - Pegatron is gearing up to start mass-producing the next-generation iPhone, according to a report by The Commercial Times. Production of the next iPhone (or iPhones) is said to be starting in Q2, though there aren't many more specifics available, and no indication of just how many devices will be produced at that time. Currently not much is known about the so-called iPhone 6 aside from a few details about its display, which is said to be made of sapphire (possibly at Apple's new Mesa, AZ plant) and will be bigger than the current iPhone display. Some reports even indicate that there could be two new models with differing screen sizes, both bigger than the iPhone 5s.

  • How Magnetic Refrigeration Works - General Electric is finally turning is technological attention to something we take for granted every day, unless of course, it quits working; the kitchen refrigerator. • Wireless electricity? It's here - It works like this: WiTricity build a "Source Resonator" -- a coil of electrical wire that generates a magnetic field when power is attached. 4K Ultra HD Graphics Card Testing - tech
(hx) 10:39 AM CET - Mar,18 2014 - Post a comment / read (2)
The alternative OS experts over at Phoronix are doing a little 4K Ultra HD graphics card testing on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Here's a taster:
When running Unigine Heaven at 3840 x 2160, all of the graphics cards are taxed quite hard. The GeForce GTX 780 Ti overall performed the best with an average frame-rate of 19 FPS compared to the Radeon R9 290 at only 12 FPS. The GTX 750 Ti 2GB was running quite odd for this very demanding Unigine Engine test. The numbers for the other graphics cards are about in line with expectations given their GPUs and vRAM capacities.

With Xonotic at ultra quality image settings for the 3840 x 2160, all of the tested modern AMD/NVIDIA GPUs were delivering playable 60+ frame-rates on average with the exception of the GeForce GTX 650. For this popular open-source game, the GeForce GTX 760 and GTX 770 were dominating over the AMD hardware to the point of sharply beating even the Radeon R9 270X and R9 290.

With the "ultimate" image quality settings at 3840 x 2160, only the higher-end Radeon and GeForce graphics cards on their binary Linux graphics drivers were pushing above 60 FPS. The new GTX 750 Maxwell series were among the hardware that couldn't push above 60 FPS at 4K for this Linux game configuration.

Crypto-Currency Mining Rigs
  • Intel's 800Gbps cables headed to cloud data centers - Intel and several of its partners said they will make 800Gbps cables available in the second half of this year, bringing big speed increases to supercomputers and data centers. The new cables are based on Intel's Silicon Photonics technology that pushes 25Gbps across each fiber. Last year, Intel demonstrated speeds of 100Gbps in each direction, using eight fibers. A new connector that goes by the name "MXC" holds up to 64 fibers (32 for transmitting and 32 for receiving), enabling a jump to 800Gbps in one direction and 800Gbps in the other, or an aggregate of "1.6Tbps" as Intel prefers to call it. (In case you're wondering, MXC is not an acronym for anything.)

Beyond this, the motherboard has support for up to Intel Xeon E5-2600 V2 CPUs, 256 GB of DDR3 ECC 1866 MHz memory (split over eight DIMMs), along with ample storage options. Ample, in this case, means that the board has a total of 10 SATA3 (6 Gb/s) ports, along with another four SATA2 (3 Gb/s) ports. It also features three PCI-Express x16 ports.

  • Windows 8.1 Update Tries To Win Back Desktop Diehards - A word of warning: If you're a Metro hater, this update will do almost nothing to make you feel all warm and fuzzy. The Windows 7-style Start menu is not coming back. This update sticks with the fundamental design principles of the Windows 8 interface, and nothing in it comes close to restoring the Windows 7 desktop interface. It is still the Windows 8.x interface, evolved, with that evolution clearly driven by powerful negative feedback.
  • Apple Releases iOS 7.1 with Bug Fixes and New Features - Apple has made iOS 7.1 available to iPhones, iPads, and iPods Touch. The operating system update resolves a significant bug that soft reset iOS devices when being used. iOS 7.1 also adds support for CarPlay, Apple's recently-announced in-car software. The update tweaks the behavior of a wide range of functions, such as the ability to control Siri manually by pressing and holding the home button. Siri gains more natural-sounding voices for Chinese, UK English, Australian English, and Japanese. iTunes Radio was improved with new placement of the search bar, and the ability to buy albums directly from the Now Playing screen. The Calendar app gains the ability to display events in the month view, as well as view country-specific holidays. Accessibility has been improved with a bold font option, and the Reduce Motion function now applies to more apps, including weather and messages. iOS 7.1 also adds new HDR camera tools, improves iCloud Keychain support, automatically clears FaceTime calls, improves Touch ID on the iPhone 5s, improves performance of the iPhone 4, and provides other UI teaks. iOS 7.1 is free to download from Apple.
  • iPhone Air Concept 2014 - The design by Sam Beckett rests upon the same principles that Apple's existing devices use, such as flat metal sides that act as the antennae with chamfered metal edges. The concept also boasts sapphire glass, an enhancement which seems likely given Apple's recent investment in the manufacture of the material. However the 1920x1080 resolution that Beckett gives is unlikely to be included on a real device, as Apple traditionally do their best to maintain aspect ratios in their device upgrades; they are more likely to double the iPhone 5s' resolution, as they did with the iPads with Retina Displays. An imaginary 10-megapixel camera makes an appearance as well as the existing Touch ID sensor. This comes within a device which, if ever made real, would be 9% thinner than the current generation.
  • Leaked video shows Wi-Fi Sense in Windows Phone 8.1 - The brief clip on UnleashThePhones' YouTube channel shows how users will be able to turn off Wi-Fi on their handset for a brief period before it comes back on again automatically. Wi-Fi connections can be stopped for one hour, four hours or one day in addition to the regular manual selection. The other feature shown in the video is what Microsoft is calling Wi-Fi Sense. If a user goes to a Wi-Fi hotspot regularly, this feature will let them to save their login and password information. This will enable them to login automatically the next time the phone "senses" that the Wi-Fi hotspot is available. Finally, Wi-Fi Sense includes a feature where users can actually share their hotspot connection information with others via their Outlook.com, Skype and Facebook contacts. So if a group of friends gather at the same hotspot, one person can simply send that login and account info to their buddies without the others having to type it in manually.

With those words in 1980 the astronomer Carl Sagan launched "Cosmos," an epic 13-part TV series that brought science to the public like never before, and opened up all of space and time to exploration. A generation later, Sagan's legacy lives again in "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey," a 21st-century reboot premiering on Fox tonight (March 9). The new "Cosmos" (the original was billed as "A Personal Journey") updates its predecessor with a blend of spectacular visual effects and the latest astronomical discoveries. 'Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey' is a 21st-century reboot of astronomer Carl Sagan's iconic 1980 science television series. The new 13-part series, hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, begins March 9, 2014 on Fox. Yet the all-new 13-episode series - hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, a fitting successor to Sagan for reasons the first episode makes clear - still stays true to the north star as Sagan's original: to share the wonder of the universe and science with viewers today. The people behind the new series think Sagan would be proud. [Carl Sagan's Astronomical Legacy in Pictures]

Gone are the days when computer monitors and televisions followed separate development paths. It was barely two years ago that Sony showed us the first-ever production 4K television (an 84-inch panel selling for a cool $25,000, a price that still stands incidentally). It was only a matter of time before computer users began demanding that same experience on the desktop.

The Green version of the Razer Mechanical Switch offers tactile feedback and an audible click upon actuation, and it's the springiest of the two, with an actuation force of 50 g. The Orange switch offers tactile feedback without a matching click, and it's a little lighter, at 45 g. Actuation distances aside, those characteristics mirror those of the Cherry MX blue and brown switches, respectively.

As Apple issued an update for Mavericks, or OS X 10.9, as well as for its two predecessors, Mountain Lion (10.8) and Lion (10.7), Apple had nothing for Snow Leopard or its owners yesterday. Snow Leopard was also ignored in December, when Apple patched Safari 6 and 7 for newer editions of OS X, but did not update Safari 5.1.10, the most-current Apple browser for the OS. Apple delivered the final security update for Snow Leopard in September 2013

Samsung has added a depth of field control to help blur the background, called Selective Focus.

GCHQ identified Kinect as possible snooping tool - tech
(hx) 09:42 AM CET - Mar,01 2014 - Post a comment / read (5)
MCV is reporting that British spy agency GCHQ identified Kinect as a possible tool for snooping on the public.
As part of new documents revealing that webcam images of Yahoo users have been captured by governments, The Guardian also reveals that one of GCHQ's presentations "discusses with interest the potential and capabilities of the Xbox 360's Kinect camera, saying it generated 'fairly normal webcam traffic' and was being evaluated as part of a wider program".

The plans were part of a surveillance program entitled Optic Nerve that worked to capture imagery of internet users via in-built hardware camera tech.

It is not yet known whether GCHQ actually recorded and stored images captured via Kinect

Thief Video Card Performance Preview - tech
(hx) 08:22 PM CET - Feb,26 2014 - Post a comment
The chaps over at HardOCP has posted their Thief Video Card Performance Preview. Here's a taster:
We set about in this preview of performance in the new game Thief by comparing several video cards to see how these stack up. The first thing we noticed was how fast the game performed, even on low-end cards with all the in-game settings enabled. High-end cards like the R9 290/X, GTX 780/Ti are overkill for performance in this game. We experienced the highest playable settings the game has to offer at 2560x1600 at 80-100FPS average performance. We did also try enabling SSAA, and found the "Low" setting to be playable on all four video cards at 2560x1600.

What we found more astonishing was how well the mid-range, and low-end cards performed. Even with the game at the highest in-game settings, and at a whopping 2560x1600 every video card upwards of $150 were able to play this game smoothly at over 50FPS average. In the low-end, only video cards below $150 needed to be scaled down to 1080p to be playable with the highest in-game settings. Anyone who has a $119, or $149 video card is probably not going to have a 30" 2560x1600 display anyway, so it means 1080p is a perfect resolution for those cards, and these have no trouble playing Thief at max settings.
--
We could make a joke here about the title of the game being "Thief" and the feeling that someone "stole" the graphics from this game. This game suffers from a problem we've experienced before, notably in another game, Dishonored. The difference between the two games though, Dishonored was actually fun to play.

The problem is that it is using a very old, by today's definitions, graphics engine with Unreal Engine 3. Sure, it is heavily modified, but the fact is, it is rooted in an old engine. This leads to the game number one performing extremely well, but also leaves the game not able to compete with modern games in terms of graphics. More importantly, to video card makers, it does not give you a reason to need to spend money on a new graphics card to upgrade. It does not push the graphics card or gaming industry forward.

Thief has subpar textures, subpar dynamic world environment, subpar physics, and a subpar graphical experience compared to modern games. Yes, it has contact hardening shadows, and those look nice, yes it has parallax occlusion mapping, and that looks nice, yes it has tessellation, and that looks nice, but all of these things we've seen before, and we've seen these used in greater detail and quantity in other games. These are "tacked on" features in Thief, rather than being built from an engine ground up with these things in mind. While Thief is just catching up with these graphical features, other games are far surpassing it graphically.

Thief looks and feels old for a 2014 game, and this is not a good selling point for new graphics cards. Now, maybe TrueAudio and Mantle can add something appealing to the game. However, we feel that even with those two additions, the game is still going to feel overall very stiff and ancient. Inserting new technologies also cannot improve the gameplay, which is certainly an important factor for any singleplayer game.
Test system specs are: ASUS Maximus V Extreme, Intel i7 3770K @ 4.8, 16GB RAM, 240GB SSD, 1350W PSU, Dell 3007WFP 30" display, Windows 8.1 x64. For all AMD cards we are using AMD's newly released Catalyst 14.2 Beta 1.3. For all NVIDIA cards we are using ForceWare 334.89.
