TechNews - Apple announces OS X Yosemite / iOS 8 - tech
(hx) 07:17 PM CEST - Jun,04 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • Devil's Canyon Running At 5.5GHz On Air - Intel just tweeted a photo from Computex showing a system running at 5.5GHz on air.
  • Intel SSD DC P3700 800GB - The speed advantages of the NVMe interface are now indelibly clear, especially as demonstrated by Intel's new fire breathing Data Center product lines. This new interface removes many of the bottlenecks associated with SATA and AHCI, bringing the flash much closer to the CPU, both physically and logically. The end results are impressive to say the least, with Intel's 18-channel controller turning in figures close to 3GB/sec and 4k random IO pushing half a million IOPS.
  • Apple announces OS X Yosemite for Mac - Apple's Craig Federighi shows off the next version of Mac OS X at the company's WWDC in San Francisco. Mac OS X Yosemite brings a whole new design that puts search front and center. The new OS version will be officially released in the fall as a free download.
  • Apple iOS 8: better desktop integration, new keyboard - Apple on Monday kicked off its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. Craig Federighi, senior VP of Software Engineering at Apple, drew the assignment of unveiling one -- well pretty much all -- of the biggest highlights of the keynote, iOS 8. As anticipated, iOS 8 includes a wealth of updates and new features starting with interactive notifications. With the update, users will be able to pull down from a notification and reply to it right there without having to leave what they're doing.
  • Apple's Swift is a new programming language with a focus on speed - Apple's used Objective-C as its programming language of choice for right around twenty years now, but it's brought something new to its yearly developer conference: Swift, a new tongue of its own making. Apple describes its new lingua franca as "Objective-C without the C," but it keeps (and improves on) the speed of its progenitors. Even if you don't know what those terms mean, it's easy to pick up that apps iOS and OS X developers build with Swift should run even smoother and faster than counterparts made with the Objective-C language they've been using. According to the folks from Cupertino, Swift can be used to craft anything from social networking apps to 3D games.
  • Start Menu won't return to Windows 8.1 until 2015 - Back at its BUILD conference in April, Microsoft announced that the Start Menu would be returning to Windows 8.1, and even went as far as to show a preview of what it would look like. The promised return of the 'classic'-style menu was met with wide approval, given that many still dislike the Start screen that Microsoft introduced with Windows 8. The company did not disclose exactly when the Start menu would be available in Windows 8.1, saying only that it would return in a future update. Speaking with journalist Mary Jo Foley in April, Microsoft's Terry Myerson explained: "The reason we (showed) that work is we thought it was important to share with developers. When do I deliver it? I really don't have anything to share there. We're just not ready yet."  Rather than delivering it as part of Update 2, it seems that the company has decided that it would make more sense to include it in the next major Windows release, codename 'Threshold'.  Threshold, which is widely expected to be called Windows 9 at launch, is still believed to be on track for launch in April 2015. That means that those looking forward to the Start menu's return will still have to wait another ten months or so. Mary Jo says that she is unsure whether Microsoft chose to delay its plans for the menu due to time constraints with its Update 2 release schedule, or if another factor has come into play.
  • Microsoft Releases File Management App for Windows Phone - As promised, Microsoft has announced the immediate availability of Files, a file management application for Windows Phone handsets. The application lets Windows Phone owners access files stored on their phone's internal memory and SD card; browse, search, and launch files; share single or multiple files at a time; create folders; and copy, move, rename, and delete files. Files for Windows Phone can be downloaded for free from the Windows Store. It requires Windows Phone 8.1.
  • Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde arrested in Sweden - Former Pirate Bay spokesman and co-founder Peter Sunde was arrested in a rural area near Malmo, Sweden. Sunde was wanted by Interpol for more than two years, ever since the sentence for his role in the Pirate Bay website was made final. He has been living in Berlin for quite some time, but still had family ties in Sweden, which he visited occasionally. Earlier today, a special Swedish police unit tasked with tracking down criminal fugitives carried out a raid at a farm in Skåne. Local law enforcement reportedly worked in collaboration with the Polish police. While details are scarce at the moment, the Swedish newspaper Expressen reports that the arrest has been confirmed by the Swedish authorities. According to Peter Althin, Sunde's lawyer, the news means that his client will most likely be sent to prison to serve his 8-month sentence.

Of course, that was just the beginning for SpaceX - Musk is nothing if not ambitious - and the company's next goal is to tackle manned space flight. Last night at its Hawthorne, California headquarters, SpaceX unveiled its newest capsule, the Dragon V2. Designed as a reusable craft for up to seven astronauts, the V2 differs from its predecessor not just in terms of what it carries but how it gets back home; according to Musk, the new craft disposes with the concept of ocean splashdowns altogether, and "can land anywhere on Earth with the accuracy of a helicopter." With a touchscreen control system, 3D printed engines, and a slick, minimalist interior, the V2 feels so close to science fiction it's hard to believe it exists!

TechNews - Skype Translator Revealed - tech
(hx) 10:50 AM CEST - May,30 2014 - Post a comment
  • New Middleware Technology Quadruples SSD Speed - A Japanese research team developed a technology to drastically improve the writing speed, power efficiency and cycling capability (product life) of a storage device based on NAND flash memory (SSD).  The team is led by Ken Takeuchi, professor at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering of Chuo University. The development was announced at 2014 IEEE International Memory Workshop (IMW), an international academic conference on semiconductor memory technologies, which took place from May 18 to 21, 2014, in Taipei. The title of the thesis is "NAND Flash Aware Data Management System for High-Speed SSDs by Garbage Collection Overhead Suppression."  With NAND flash memory, it is not possible to overwrite data on the same memory area, making it necessary to write data on a different area and, then, invalidate the old area. As a result, data is fragmented, increasing invalid area and decreasing storage capacity. Therefore, NAND flash memories carry out "garbage collection," which rearranges fragmented data in a continuous way and erases blocks of invalid area. This process takes 100ms or longer, drastically decreasing the writing speed of SSD.
  • Microsoft warns against registry hack that allows Windows XP updates - Officially, Microsoft stopped releasing automatic public updates for Windows XP over a month ago after over 12 years. Now a registry hack has been found that, when placed in the OS, allows it to continue receiving updates. By making a few changes in the registry of XP, the hack basically tricks the automatic update servers at Microsoft into thinking the OS is Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. The OS is based on Windows XP Service Pack 3 and it will continue to get security updates from Microsoft until April 2019.
  • Skype Translator: Breaking down language barriers - Peter Lee, Microsoft Research corporate vice president, shares insights and a sneak peek into the Skype Translator, derived from decades of research in speech-recognition, automatic-translation, and machine-learning technologies. Skype Translator is being developed jointly by the Skype and Microsoft Research teams, and combines voice and IM technologies with Microsoft Translator along with neural-network-based speech recognition to deliver near-real-time cross-lingual communication. With the Skype Translator, we're one step closer to universal communications across language barriers, enabling people to connect in ways never before possible. In Lee's words, "It's truly magical."
  • Watch Dogs torrent installing Bitcoin miner -According to numerous reports, one or more versions of the Skidrow torrent circulating across peer-to-peer networks is hiding a Bitcoin miner. The installer apparently loads two exe files onto a victim's machine, winlogin.exe -- not to be confused with the legitimate Windows process winlogon.exe -- and ltc.exe. Infected machines then dedicate a portion of their CPU and GPU cycles in the background to break down complex algorithms and earn some Bitcoins for whoever is behind the scheme. Unsurprisingly, there are numerous reports of dropped computer performance and crashes from pirates.

And before you think this was one of those 3D stimulated sex app with hot babes, hold on. The app which was titled HappyPlayTime is a sex-education app currently in development that teaches women how to masturbate. It even had a cute character called "Happy" which is well a vulva and aims to help women get to orgasms, on either own. But Apple wasn't standing for any of it and the app was rejected from iTunes on 13 May.

But we're closing in. Last month, neurosurgeons in China announced the development of a new liquid metal that can help regrow completely severed nerve fibers. As many as 20 million Americans today suffer varying levels of debilitation from over 100 different types of damage to peripheral nerves within the spine and throughout the body. Many types of nerve damage may be treated with surgery and physical therapy, but when a nerve fiber is totally severed, the only hope is to reconnect the separated ends.

AMD Catalyst 14.6 Beta Drivers Officially Released - tech
(hx) 10:22 PM CEST - May,28 2014 - Post a comment / read (2)
AMD have released a new beta version of their Catalyst video card drivers that offers increased performance but completely drops support for Windows 8.0. This means that PC gamers will have to upgrade to Windows 8.1 in order to take advantage of newer drivers for their graphics cards. Alongside Windows 8.1, AMD's Catalyst 14.6 Beta driver supports Windows 7 (32 & 64-bit version with SP1 or higher). There is no mention of Windows Vista, meaning that this driver may not be compatible with that OS.

Wolfenstein: The New Order - Performance Boost - tech
(coola) 10:36 PM CEST - May,26 2014 - Post a comment / read (5)
Coola has informed me about a possible performance boost for Wolfenstein: The New Order. According to him, by renaming the executable filename from WolfNewOrder_x64 to WolfNewOrder_x32, PC gamers will notice a huge performance increase.
I am using the latest Nvidia drivers but that boost still happened strangely enough. Just the rename made my game run butter smooth. I have an i7 3770 3.4 ghz and a GTX 660 1.5 GB and 32 GB of RAM. I had read on forums that the rename have a huge FPS boost, and I can confirm it's a world of difference. It went from horribly stutters to barely any streaming to butter smooth and no pop in.

TechNews - Toshiba announces 5TB HDD - tech
(hx) 08:08 PM CEST - May,24 2014 - Post a comment
  • Pricing and Details for Intel's Devil's Canyon and Unlocked Pentium Leaked Online - The i5-4690K will have a 3.5 GHz base clock with 3.9 GHz Turbo Boost, 6 MB of L3 cache within a TDP of 88W.  Pricing for the boxed version of the i5 would seem to be ~$254.  The i7-4790K however will be a 4.0 GHz processor that will turbo up to 4.4 GHz, with 8 MB of L3 cache and a similar 88W TDP. Pricing for the i7 above is around ~$362, making a marked premium for the extra threads. The sources also state that all three processors should be valid on both the 8-series and 9-series motherboards, which makes sense given that they are LGA1150 CPUs. Intel has not officially commented on any of these details. The interest Intel receives from these processors may dictate their future course of action with the newer platforms. When we get samples we will let you know how they perform. While there is nothing official yet with regards how exactly the new CPUs have changed with regards their overclocking potential, as an overclocker, I am certainly looking forward to them.
  • Toshiba announces 5TB, 7,200 RPM enterprise HDD - Toshiba's latest one crams five 1TB platters spinning at 7,200-RPM inside of a 3.5" casing. It has a maximum sustained speed of 170MB/s, a "rated annual workload" of 180TB per year, and, if I'm reading this document right, a five-year warranty. The MC series to which this drive belongs also includes 4TB, 3TB, and 2TB offerings with slightly lower speed ratings of 140-150MB/s.
  • NVIDIA GRID Test Drive - It only takes a few minutes to register and access the secure NVIDIA Test Drive site. No need to build a proof-of-concept private cloud. Once done, you have 24 hours to see the benefits of graphics acceleration for virtualized desktops.
  • Acer unveils 4K monitor with G-Sync - Dubbed the XB280HK, this new Acer specimen has a 28" LED-backlit panel with a 3840x2160 resolution. Its 170/170deg viewing angles fall about eight degrees short of what IPS screens usually deliver, but they beat the 170/160° you typically get with TN panels. Also, the display's adjustable stand should ensure users never view the image too far off-center. The stand allows the display to be tilted from -5deg to 35deg, rotated by 120deg, raised by 150 mm, and pivoted from landscape to portrait mode. Other perks include a built-in USB 3.0 hub with four ports placed along the display's side and bottom. Acer says you can use these to connect your mouse and keyboard, but USB 3.0 is speedy enough for external storage and other bandwidth-hungry devices, too.
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Now Available For Pre-Order - Interested in playing with Microsoft's new Surface Pro 3 laptop-tablet hybrid? The super-thin Windows 8.1 device will also be available in China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan, though folks over there will only be able to order it after a bit of time via Microsoftstore.com, Microsoft retail stores and third-party retailers. The Surface Pro 3 equipped with Core i5, Type Cover and Surface Pen will first be reaching the hands of folks in Canada and the US starting June 20. The Core i3 and Core i7 versions will only ship in August. By that time, all configurations of the device will be available on sale around the world.
  • Unpatched security vulnerability in IE8 - Microsoft hasn't fixed a critical IE8 security flaw that was reported to the company back in October 2013, according to an advisory published yesterday by HP's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). The bug was discovered by Belgian researcher Peter Van Eeckhoutte. According to the report, the bug allows an attacker to execute malicious code on computers running IE8 when users visit a website designed to exploit it. This could be done by sending the victim an email or instant message that, if clicked, would lead to the attack.
  • Hackers Broke Into a Public Utility Control Room -In a rare gesture of transparency, the Department of Homeland Security just announced that hackers recently targeted and compromised a public utility's control system. • If A Google Employee Dies His Spouse Gets Half His Salary - Google has enacted new death benefits for its employees, reports Forbes. If an employee dies, that employee's spouse receives half the employee's salary for 10 years. There's no tenure requirement on this benefit either-every one of Google's 34,000 employees is immediately eligible regardless of how long they've worked there. On top of the half-salary, the spouse will also receive stock benefits and children will receive $1,000 per month until they turn 19.
  • Apple Hopes to Resolve iMessage Glitch - Apple says it is working to fix a problem that results in lost text messages for former iPhone owners. The issue stems from Apple's iMessage service, which can be used to send either SMS or IM messages between iOS devices. The intent of the system was to allow iPhone owners to reduce their reliance on carrier-based SMS services, and possibly even save money on their monthly bill. While the system works as intended for iOS device owners, iPhone customers who choose to buy a new, different handset - but keep the same phone number - are losing texts to the iMessage void. One California consumer has filed a class action lawsuit against Apple, alleging its iMessage problem deprives former customers from deriving the full value of their new handset, as well as interfering with the services offered by the wireless network operator. Apple has not addressed the litigation, but said in a statement provided to Re/Code, "We recently fixed a server-side iMessage bug which was causing an issue for some users, and we have an additional bug fix in a future software update. For users still experiencing an issue, please contact AppleCare." Apple didn't say how soon it might fully resolve the problem.

They should be respected and protected. The awesome Great White can grow to 21 feet in length. It IS THE apex predator of the sea. Except for maybe the ORCA. Great Whites have been around for over 15 million years. Are they the offspring of the Megalodon? Not sure. Science is still working on that.

  • Dell says Alienware Steam Machine will be their least profitable system ever - In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Alienware chief Frank Azor said their branded Steam Machine was going to be very challenging. What's more, he added that it'll absolutely be the least profitable system they ever sell. So then, why do it at all? As the publication points out, they simply want to be associated with Valve – the company that operates arguably the most popular video game download service in the world.

  • Latest OS X Update Contained iTunes Bug - If you're a Mac user and you downloaded this week's Mac OS X update (Mavericks 10.9.3), you may have noticed that your computer's Users/ and Users/Shared/ folders have disappeared. It turns out the disappearance is due to a security flaw in iTunes 11.2, which was part of the OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 update. The flaw is only really serious on iMacs and MacBooks with multiple user accounts, as it lets one account compromise the other accounts on the same computer. Apple has already patched the flaw with iTunes 11.2.1, which users can download via the Software Updater or from the Apple website. Apple explained in a support note that the bug had to do with how the computer handles the permissions of separate users on the same machine: "Upon each reboot, the permissions for the /Users and /Users/Shared directories would be set to world-writable, allowing modification of these directories [by any user]." The issue also occurred on some Mavericks computers that had iTunes 11.2 installed separately without upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.3.

  • WhatsApp removed from Windows Phone Store, will return after fixes - WhatsApp, broken on Windows Phone 8.1 and with no immediate fix promised, has vanished from the Windows Phone Store. WhatsApp tells us that the removal was intentional, though it should only be temporary.

We also see very similar growth in the company's active non-paid users which have jumped from 24 million to around 40 million in the same time span.

Confirmed: Watch_Dogs Will Run With 4GB RAM - tech
(hx) 09:07 AM CEST - May,22 2014 - Post a comment / read (13)
According to the official PC Requirements list, Watch_Dogs needs at least 6GB of RAM. Well, today I can reveal that there won't be any hard lock mechanism preventing users from playing this game, even if they only have 4GB of RAM. In short, PC gamers with less than 6GB of RAM will be able to launch the game. There might be some swap issues when the game loads more data, but there won’t be any lock similar to the one found in the unpatched version of Call of Duty: Ghosts. Watch_Dogs releases on May 27th!
Arkaprava Biswas: I am only asking that will it RUN smoothly on high settings with 4 gb RAM and a gtx 780.. :'(

Jonathan Morin (Creative Director of Watch_Dogs): 4GB is lower then min specs. It might run if nothing else is running, but when it swap to your hard drive it will lag.

TechNews - Windows 9 preview targeting a Q2/2015 - tech
(hx) 05:00 PM CEST - May,17 2014 - Post a comment / read (4)
  • Windows 9 preview targeting a Q2 2015 release - Windows 9, codename Threshold, is rumored for an April 2015 release date. This information is known and comes from Paul Thurrott, a well-known Microsoft insider. Now, according to a new rumor, Microsoft will offer a preview version of the new operating system sometime around February of 2015. Similar to the Developer Preview or Consumer Preview of Windows 8, Microsoft is rumored to offer a public preview build of Windows 9 sometime between Q2 or Q3 of 2015 (around February or March of 2015) - giving consumers a chance to play with the new operating system before it's official release. This information comes from a leaker by the name of "Faikee," who was recently responsible for dropping the Windows 365 name, along with other tidbits.  The bigger question is what Windows 9 will bring to the table in terms of features. We would expect to see some integration of Cortana and naturally the Start menu will be present too. Expect the Modern UI to get updated as well but the degree of those changes are not clearly known at this time.  I think there is a possibility there will be no Windows 9, instead the next version of Windows could be Windows 8.2. I have a feeling Microsoft wants to follow Mac OSX scheme of updates. I would personally actually like if Microsoft came out with Windows 8.2 and sold it for $29.00. Then again, if Microsoft left the Windows 8 name behind and released Windows 9, it would bring positive reception.
  • Nvidia GeForce 337.81 Beta Driver Released - Wolfenstein: The New Order and Watch_Dogs will be released later this month and as you'd expect, Nvidia has released a new beta driver for its graphics cards. • Google Play Store Now Accepts PayPal - Google today made it easier for consumers to pay for Play Store purchases by adding support for PayPal. Android device owners can register their PayPal account with the Play Store and use PayPal - rather than a credit card - to make app, game, and other content purchases. PayPal is available to consumers in 12 countries, including the U.S. and Canada. Google also expanded carrier billing and Google Play gift cards to more carriers and more countries. Last, developers in 13 new countries can sell apps in the Play Store for the first time. Google believes the expanded support for varied payment vehicles will entice developers to create more apps for the Android platform
  • HTC One Mini 2: Specs, Price And Release Date - The HTC One Mini 2 is coming equipped with a quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU, a 4.5 inch display (1280 x 720 ), a 13MP rear camera, and a 5MP wide field of view front camera. People going for the device will also get BoomSound stereo speakers, NFC, a miroSD card slot, and a 2,100mAh battery. Similar to the One, the downsized variant features an aluminum back and runs Sense 6 on top of Android 4.4. But similar to last year's Mini, The One Mini 2 also has a band of plastic around the sides. Compared to its bigger sibling, the One Mini 2 is missing the Duo camera, the Motion Launch unlocking gestures, and the IR blaster, things that made the flagship device more appealing.

  • Why You Should Support Net Neutrality - In a nutshell, cable companies want to implement tiered pricing plans (similar to cellular data plans) that will affect speeds relating to websites, gaming, and streaming video. If left unchecked, cable companies will provide a "fast lane" available for sites and applications that can pay. So gamers, expect services such as Xbox Live, Playstation Network, and even Steam to pay exorbitant fees for better speeds. And the consumer? Expect to pay more to do what you like. From increased internet fees, to paying more for your favorite applications. It's all going to affect you and your wallet.

  • Microsoft extends Windows 8.1 update requirement by 30 days - Users who haven't installed the first major update to Windows 8.1 now have an additional 30 days to do so, or they will no longer receive updates for the operating system. When Microsoft released Windows 8.1's first major update, the company said it would be required to continue receiving updates for the operating system, giving users until May 13 to install it. Now consumers have until June 10 to install the update and continue receiving support for Microsoft's flagship OS. A post on the official Windows blog states that the extension was made to give users adequate time to install the update to "ensure their safety." The blog post doesn't note any changes to enterprise requirements for the update, meaning they're still required to install it by Aug. 12. Users who have automatic updates turned on likely already have the update, and if they don't, the update will install itself via Windows Update. Users who don't have automatic updates turned on can install the new version of Windows 8.1 manually. Those who don't install the update will run the risk of exposing themselves to security issues, as Microsoft will no longer provide updates of any sort, including security improvements, to earlier versions of Windows 8.1 after June 10.
Microsoft launches final version of Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 - After releasing an early version of Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 in February, Microsoft has now launched the final build for software developers to download right now. Unlike Update 1, which was created mainly to fix bugs in Visual Studio 2013, this new download adds a number of new features to Microsoft's development tool. In a blog post, Microsoft says that Update 2 adds support for building universal apps that will work in both Windows 8 and Windows Phone platforms. In addition, Update 2 finally adds official support for TypeScript, which is Microsoft's extension of JavaScript that's been in development for some time. In a separate blog, Microsoft exec S. Somasegar writes quite a bit about Visual Studio 2013's new preview support for Apache Cordova, which is an open source platform for making mobile apps
  • Motorola Redefines Entry-Level Smartphones with Moto E - Motorola today announced the Moto E, a new low-cost handset meant to put a nail in the coffin of feature phones. The device bears a familial resemblance to last year's Moto X and Moto G, but downgrades specs to further drop the price. Motorola is offering 20 different interchangeable rear covers to allow for personalization of the phone, which is splash proof and scratch proof. The Moto E features a 4.3- inch display with Gorilla Glass 3 and a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. It comes with a 5-megapixel camera that can capture panoramas as well as 720p HD video. The phone also includes support for a microSD card up to 32GB, an FM radio, and a 1,980mAh battery that Motorola claims is good for a full day. The Moto E runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat and Motorola is guaranteeing at least one major system update in the future. The Moto E will be sold by 80 carriers in 40 countries in the next few weeks. It does not support LTE networks, but does support HSPA and CDMA in various geographies. The Moto E costs $129. Motorola also announced a refresh to the Moto G, which adds support for LTE and microSD cards. The Moto G + 4G will sell for $219 and goes on sale in early June.
  • iPhone 6 may ship with sharper 1,704 x 960 resolution display - The iPhone 6 is likely to get a resolution bump to go along with its larger screen size(s). The iPhone 5s owns a resolution of 1,136 x 640 but as 9to5Mac points out, the next model could push that up to 1,704 x 960 which would result in a pixel per inch rating of 416 on the rumored 4.7-inch model and 356 on the larger 5.5-inch device.

Things aren't expected to get better anytime soon either as the Japanese tech giant is expecting a loss of Y50 billion ($489 million) for the next fiscal year ending in March 2015.

  • DDR4 Memory for Desktops Expected in Q3 - Crucial will break with tradition this summer and ship the new DDR4 memory modules for both servers and desktops simultaneously. • Opera 21 Launches For Windows and Mac - If you are in the market for a new browser, Opera has just released version 21, bringing with it much higher browsing speed and a host of fixes and improvements.
  • Sprint Turns to Throttling to Manage Network Congestion - Beginning in June, Sprint will slow down the browsing speeds available to the top 5% of its customers in congested regions. The change applies to Sprint's post- and pre-paid customers. Some customers have already received text messages explaining the change. Sprint explained the change will affect the top consumers of mobile data, but only when they are in a congested area. This change "will enable us to provide more customers with a high quality data experience during heavy usage times," said Sprint in a statement provided to FierceWirelessTech. "Once the customer is no longer connected to a congested cell site, or the site is no longer congested, speeds will return to normal." Sprint has long marketed "unlimited data" as a way to differentiate itself from its competitors, all of which sell data but the bucket. Sprint's pre-paid arms, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile USA, have long throttled customers who exceed certain usage amounts. This marks the first time Sprint will throttle its own-branded customers. According to Sprint, it developed "fairness algorithms" on both its CDMA and LTE networks to "dynamically allocate available bandwidth in a way that is fair to all users." Sprint further noted that the change isn't being implemented due to sudden spikes in traffic, but instead reflects a continuing increase in usage.
  • Router company Mediabridge banned from Amazon after harassing - A reviewer on Amazon gave Mediabridge's Medialink Wireless-N Broadband Router a one-star review, warning potential users that the device left his "connection crawling more than 25 feet" from the router. This seemed strange for a product which, at the time, had an impressive 95% satisfaction rate. Not long after submitting it, the reviewer posted on reddit's /r/legaladvice community saying that he had received a threatening letter from Mediabridge. The letter demanded the reviewer agree to never purchase any Mediabridge products, never publicly comment online about Mediabridge products, and to take down the Amazon review immediately. The company stated its intention to sue the reviewer if its demands were not met. The post, which reached reddit's front page, prompted hundreds of outraged redditors to post one-star reviews on the products page, pushing its total ratings down to mediocre levels. Misguided redditors also inadvertently brigaded the product page of a Tenda router, which bears stunning similarities to the Mediabridge model, and the Amazon page for Medialink, an unrelated company.

That's on the low end of what the company was considering doing, based on their previous earnings reports. On the bright side, Netflix is trying to build some goodwill by promising to lock in the price for current customers at $7.99 for an entire two years. Unlike cable providers, who routinely increase prices at the drop of a hat, this is a nice customer-friendly move by the company.

TechNews - 2014 MacBook Air Benchmarks - tech
(hx) 12:16 AM CEST - May,08 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • 2014 MacBook Air Benchmarks - Apple's new range of MacBook Airs is out and they include the latest Haswell processors from Intel as well as a variety of other tweaks and improvements. Unfortunately the new models don't include Retina displays or, indeed, improved memory and storage, as the benchmarks are showing. MacWorld have got their hands on the new MacBook Airs and have compared the 2013 model to the 2014 model, and the results are mixed. Processor-wise, the new models are slightly improved due to the new Haswell chips from Intel. In terms of flash storage, however, the new Airs are slower than the old Airs, with some benchmarks showing that the new laptops were twice as slow as the old ones.

  • iOS 7 bug leaves email attachments unencrypted - A recently-discovered bug in Apple's iOS 7 mobile operating system has revealed that any email attachments sent from an iOS 7 device will remain unencrypted, even if iOS 7's 'Data Protection' feature is enabled. The bug was found by Andreas Kurtz, a researcher for NESO Security Labs in Germany. According to Kurtz, he verified the claim by restoring an iPhone 4 to iOS 7.1 and setting up an IMAP email account. Kurtz then accessed the file system, where he discovered that every attachment was accessible and completely lacked any encryption or restriction. The findings were reproduced on an iPhone 5s and an iPad 2, both running iOS 7.0.4. The bug was reported to Apple, who acknowledged that they were "aware of the issue" but did not provide a timeframe for when the bug is expected to be fixed.
  • Cryptolocker-Like Ransomware Spreads to Android Devices - Have you been looking at child pornography on your Android phone??! Quick, pay this fine or the FBI will arrest you! That's how a new type of Android ransomware is tricking people into paying up. Once installed, the malware, dubbed "Koler.A," locks up the phone, preventing users from accessing the home screen and effectively holding the phones ransom until users pay $300. "Koler.A," first detected Sunday (May 4) by the pseudonymous French security blogger Kafeine, is one of the first discovered examples of Android ransomware, and the first known "police Trojan" for Android. Fortunately, its bark is worse than its bite.
  • Jury Adjusts What Samsung Owes Apple - A jury in San Jose today adjusted the damages owed to Apple by Samsung for violating its smartphone patents. Last Friday, a jury found Samsung guilty of infringing on two Apple patents. Judge Koh had already found Samsung guilty of violating one Apple patent earlier during the trial. In its original verdict, the jury awarded Apple $119.6 million for two of the patents, but failed to award Apple any damages for the third. Judge Lucy Koh asked the jury to reconsider. After two hours of deliberations today, the jury revised the total amount owed by Samsung to Apple to be $120 million. It added about $4 million for the additional patent, but revised downward the amounts awarded for the other two patents. Apple had sought $2.2 billion. Both companies are expected to appeal aspects of the verdict and damages. The jury also found Apple guilty of infringing on one Samsung patent. This trial marks the second major U.S. courtroom battle between the two companies over smartphone patents. Samsung was found guilty in 2012 of violating various Apple patents. In that case, Apple was awarded damages of $930 million.

(hx) 09:28 AM CEST - May,05 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
NVIDIA began a promotion this week bundling Watch Dogs with a qualifying video card. The promotion is for an unspecified limited time and gameplay starts on May 27th on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4.
From today onwards, those who now purchase selected NVIDIA GTX desktop video cards can now get a copy of Watch Dogs. The video cards that qualify for this game are NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN, 780 Ti, 780, 770, 760, 690, 680, 670, 660 Ti and 660 desktop GPUs.

The promotion has started from today onwards, and will be available for a limited time through retailers like Amazon and NewEgg. Once you receive the code, you can redeem it via Ubisoft's Uplay digital store. However, you can only start playing the game on May 27th.

Its not really surprising to see Watch Dogs being bundled with newer video cards. Watch Dogs is optimized keeping NVIDIA in mind as it includes certain enhancements such as TXAA and HBAO+, similar to what was found in games such as Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

  • SanDisk announces 4TB SSD, hopes for 8TB next year - SanDisk this week announced the industry's first 4TB enterprise-class SAS solid-state drive (SSD) in its Optimus MAX product based on 19-nanometer process technology. The company also unveiled three new Lightning II 12 Gbps performance SAS SSDs with capacities of up to 1.6TB. In all, SanDisk announced four new data center-class SSDs. As the drives are enterprise-class, which are typically sold through third parties, SanDisk did not announce pricing with the new drives. Along with the new drives, SanDisk confirmed that the company hopes to release 6TB and 8TB Optimus MAX SSDs in a 2.5-in. size next year -- surpassing anything previously offered by manufacturers.

  • Glasses-free 3D 4k TV appears on Kickstarter - Dimenco has launched a Kickstarter campaign hoping to produce one of the first ever 4k glasses-free 3D TVs. The Dutch company is asking for a €199,000 investment to fuel the project, hoping to get the product on the market for €899 ($1,244) later this year. The television itself has a native resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, however, is only capable of playing 1080p when in 2D mode. When watching in 3D you have access to the full resolution, however, if a 3D 4K input is available, remains unknown. The screen features a 150deg ultra wide viewing angle for "good 3D from any angle or distance", and is complimented with a typical 6.5ms response time. Dimenco has only stated that the television comes in a 39inch image size, however we suspect more sizes will be available in the future.
  • Google challenges Office for iPad with new Android / iOS apps - Google is now offering iOS and Android device owners new stand alone Docs and Sheets apps, just over a month after Microsoft released the long awaited Office for iPad apps. Google's blog states that the free apps are designed to replace the current Google Drive app for reading, creating and editing documents and spreadsheets. The Drive app will still be available for users to view and organize all of their files; both apps will work even if the device is offline. Google also has plans to release a Slides app for creating presentations in the near future.
  • Google Now Provides Offline Compatibility - Google Now has been displayed as a remarkable tool for Android users since its initial release. The service, which is a part of Google Search, provides various personalized information such as weather, sports scores, and drive times directly to users. One issue that has plagued Google Now for quite some time however has been that it was unable to deliver the aforementioned information through Google Now cards if no data was available. Google has pushed an update to the service which remedies this issue, and now, users of the service provided by Google can read information from Google Now cards while their smartphone is offline. To receive the new offline capability, users simply need to ensure that the Google Search application successfully updates.

  • Facebook Intros Anonymous Login  - Facebook today announced several changes to its login tools. The first is called anonymous login and will allow people to log into apps using their Facebook credentials, but without sharing any of their personal data with the app in question. Facebook sees this as a way for users to try apps on a trial basis without giving up all their details right away. Facebook is beta testing anonymous login with developers right now and expects to roll it out to most users in several months. The second tool gives users granular control over exactly which details they share with an app when using Facebook login. For example, users will be able to share their email address but not their phone number or birthday if they want. The new Facebook Login also won't post to Facebook without permission. Facebook said it plans to review new apps that use Facebook login to make sure the apps are of high quality and won't take advantage of user details. The new Facebook login will roll out slowly over the coming months. Last, Facebook said it is creating a new dashboard so users can easily see what they've shared with various apps. The dashboard will display which apps have full access to their data, which have been logged into anonymously, and allow users to make changes on the fly. The redesigned app control panel will be rolling out over the next few weeks. The announcements were made during Facebook's f8 developer conference.
  • US Military training for possibility of US Dollar collapse - Dollar will collapse sooner than later, and the biggest side effect will be that the "rich states" will no longer agree to subsidize the "poor states", as economic agony will go around plenty. • MS confirms File Manager coming to Windows Phone 8.1 in late May - Microsoft's Windows Phone leader Joe Belfiore made a significant announcement during his Reddit AMA session today, and it's one that's been a long time in coming. A File Manager feature will be added to Windows Phone 8.1 in the near future. He even provided some screenshots which were uploaded to Imgur. The images show that users will be able to create new folders from within the operating system and search inside folders for specific documents. It will also allow users to move folders to an SD card. The File Manager feature is scheduled to be released for Windows Phone 8.1 users sometime before the end of May, according to Belfiore. It certainly will be a huge new addition for people who use the OS.
  • Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini Specs Rumors - While the Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4 were both followed by mini versions, rumors of an upcoming Galaxy S5 Mini have also been sailing through our ears, time and again. The last we heard was a rumor of an IP67 certification for the miniature handset, which simply states that water and dust will not be a threat to the S5's little brother. And that's not all. The most recent gossip states that the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will sport a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a 326ppi pixel density. Inside, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will reportedly come with a quad-core Snapdragon 400 chipset clocked at 1.6GHz with 1.5GB of RAM. 16GB internal storage with a microSD card support of up to 32GB will make sure you carry all your pictures, music and movies around. The phone will come with an 8MP camera on its rear and a 1.5MP front-facing camera with a 2,100 mAh battery. To top it off, Samsung's upcoming offering could also sport Android 4.4.2 KitKat as its operating system with TouchWiz UI.
  • New Google Glass teardown reveals $80 build cost - A Google Glass teardown from last year revealed that the bill of materials for the device was at $208. Even accounting for the cost involved in customizing the hardware to fit into the unique design of the Glass, the device would not have cost Google more than $250 to manufacture. At the time, it was believed that the $1500 price for the Glass was to limit the device only to limit access of the device to technology enthusiasts. Google has mentioned last year that a consumer version of Glass would launch later this year, although the price of this device wasn't mentioned. Considering it comes with similar hardware as the current iteration, it should be around the $300 - $350 mark. However, a new teardown published by Teardown.com mentions the $200 BOM quoted from last year were too high, and that the hardware used in the Glass amounts to a mere $80. The CPU, a TI OMAP 4430, was the costliest item on the list at $13.96. All the wireless sensors as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios combined accounted for $10.79, while the 5 MP camera was valued in at $5.66. The touchscreen display was said to be one of the costliest components in the Glass, but Teardown's analysis revealed that it only costs $3.

The app is only available on Apple devices so far, and the current plan is that there will be one released for each Star Wars movie up until Star Wars: Episode VII comes out. The interactive storybooks are going to cost a whopping $6.99 each.
  • The Salvation Trailer - Mads Mikkelsen stars in Scandinavian western The Salvation, a Cannes Official Selection title. Directed by Kristian Levring, the 1870s-set pic also stars Eva Green, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Mikael Persbrandt, Eric Cantona and Jonathan Pryce. Levring co-wrote the script with Susanne Bier's frequent collaborator Anders Thomas Jensen. The large-scale drama follows Mikkelsen's settler John and his arrival in the American West. Microsoft Fixes IE Bug, Even For Windows XP - tech
(hx) 11:26 PM CEST - May,01 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
Microsoft has issued an out-of-band security update to fix the issue affecting Internet Explorer. If you don't use automatic updates, head on over and manually apply the fix.
The majority of customers have automatic updates enabled and will not need to take any action because protections will be downloaded and installed automatically. If you're unsure if you have automatic updates, or you haven’t enabled Automatic Update, now is the time.

For those manually updating, we strongly encourage you to apply this update as quickly as possible following the directions in the released security bulletin.

We have made the decision to issue a security update for Windows XP users. Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, and we continue to encourage customers to migrate to a modern operating system, such as Windows 7 or 8.1. Additionally, customers are encouraged to upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer, IE 11.

  • AMD Radeon R9 295X2 CrossFire Video Card Review - Got extra PCIe slots and have no idea what in the world you can do with those? Well if you have $3000 burning a hole in your pocket, wiring in your house that is up to code, a good air conditioning system, and a Type C fire extinguisher that you are not using, AMD's Radeon R9 295X2 QuadFire may be just what the fire marshal ordered.
  • MacBook Air now marginally faster, $100 cheaper - Apple has quietly updated their MacBook Air offerings today, bringing a slight change to the system specifications to make the CPU faster, while also dropping the price by $100. At its new price, you can get an 11-inch MacBook Air for as low as $899, making it an even more attractive option for a device of this form factor. The slight change to system specifications sees the CPU's clock speed boosted by 100 MHz: the standard clock speed for the dual-core Intel 'Haswell' processor is now 1.4 GHz, and the Turbo Boost speed is up to 2.7 GHz. It appears Apple has simply swapped out the Core i5-4250U for the Core i5-4260U, which was recently launched and, apart from clock speeds, is identical to its predecessor. All other specifications remain the same. The 11.6-inch model features a 1366 x 768 display while the 13.3-inch model has a 1440 x 900 display, and both contain 4 GB of LPDDR3-1600 RAM, up to 512 GB of PCIe-based solid state storage, two USB 3.0 and two Thunderbolt ports, and Wi-Fi 802.11ac

These updates address vulnerabilities that could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. Adobe is aware of reports that an exploit for CVE-2014-0515 exists in the wild, and is being used to target Flash Player users on the Windows platform.
  • Microsoft Discloses Zero Day Exploit in All Versions of IE - Microsoft revealed that the company had been informed of a new vulnerability late Saturday night by the FireEye research company. So far Microsoft has not offered a solution to the new exploit which affects all versions of Internet Explorer. All versions of Internet Explorer from 6 through 11 are listed as vulnerable as well as all supported versions of Windows other than Server Core. Windows Server versions on which IE is run in the default Enhanced Security Configuration are not vulnerable unless an affected site is placed in the Internet Explorer Trusted sites zone. The vulnerability was reported to Microsoft by research firm FireEye. FireEye says that, while the vulnerability affects all versions of IE, the attack is specific to versions 9, 10 and 11. It is a "use after free" attack in which memory objects in the browser are manipulated after being released. The attack bypasses both DEP (Data Execution Prevention) and ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization). The specific exploit, according to FireEye, uses an Adobe Flash SWF file to manipulate the heap with a technique called heap feng shui. Neither Microsoft nor FireEye says it, but this implies that systems without Flash installed are not vulnerable to the specific exploit, although they are to the underlyng vulnerability in Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer 10 and 11 come with Flash embedded, so they are vulnerable by default.

  • Nvidia GTX Titan-Z to be released April 29 - According to a report from Japan's Hermitage Akihabara, Nvidia's GTX Titan-Z has already hit channel and will be on store shelves April 29. Coming in at $2,999 before tax (in Japan it will retail for a whopping 3,900 in equivalent US dollars), the card has a pair of 28 nm GK110 GPUs, 880 CUDA cores, 240 TMUs, and 48 ROPs along with 12 GB of GDDR5 memory (6GB per core) on a 384-bit wide memory bus. Unlike the Radeon 295×2, the card is purely air-cooled and does not come with a water cooler. • Russian 'anti-terrorism' laws will ban Skype, Facebook - Russia has passed a series of new 'anti-terrorism' laws that will make services like Skype illegal unless companies change their practices within six months. The new laws require that service operators such as Skype, Facebook and Google's Gmail store Russian user data on servers that are located in the country. Why? Well, if Russian authorities want access to this data, they need the servers to be located on their soil so that they can legally request the information. For Russians, this is a significant move that will apparently give their government far greater control over Internet usage, as they are compelling those that provide services like Skype to host the data on Russian soil. Ed.note: The companies should finally really encrypt the data. Then nobody cares where they are stored. And no secret service can get simply access to our data
  • Hulu Cracks Down on VPNs - While Hulu is only available to United States residents, some individuals located outside of the country have been able to access the service through the use of VPNs. Hulu is looking to put a stop to this, as it is now blocking all IP addresses that are associated with major VPN services such as Private Internet Access, TorGuard, and VikingVPN. Hulu explains that it is blocking anonymous proxy servers due to contractual limitations. While this may seem like a noble move by Hulu in order to support its business, it is in the process blocking legitimate Americans from accessing the service while traveling outside of the country. Additionally, the recent move by Hulu is blocking other users of the service located within the United States that use VPN services for privacy reasons. Most of the VPN services that have been affected are reportedly investigating possible workarounds and have contacted Hulu for possible solutions to the VPN crackdown.
  • Amazon and HBO Strike Major Deal - Amazon has announced that it has struck an important deal with HBO, bringing an assortment of content to customers of the Amazon Prime service. Some shows that will be featured on Amazon Prime include Boardwalk Empire, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, and True Blood, just to name a few. The catch to this deal however is that Amazon will be delayed in delivering HBO content to Prime members by three full years. This means that current seasons of shows, such as Girls, The Newsroom, and Veep, will be unavailable to Amazon Prime users for three years from their respective premier dates. Viewers who wish to watch the latest content will still need to subscribe to cable television and HBO. HBO did reveal that it will still continue its normal broadcasting of content through its HBO GO streaming service, despite the deal that has occurred between it and Amazon.

Sales rose 23 percent from last year to $19.74 billion in the quarter, leading to operating cash flow increases of 26 percent to $5.35 billion. In the end that led to a drop in operating income for the quarter by 19 percent to just $146 million. Net income was just $108 million, but that's an increase over $82 million in Q1 2013.

AMD releases Catalyst 14.4 WHQL driver - tech
(hx) 07:43 PM CEST - Apr,26 2014 - Post a comment
AMD released a WHQL-signed version of its Catalyst 14.4 software suite, its first in four months (the previous one being 13.12 WHQL). The driver builds on the Catalyst 14.4 Release Candidate the company shipped out a little earlier this month, to lend immediate support for Radeon R9 295X2, which hit the shelves on the 21st. The four highlights of Catalyst 14.4 include support for the R9 295X2, CrossFire frame-pacing improvements for a number of games, full support for OpenGL 4.4 API, and bug-fixes for AMD Mantle API.

Among the games AMD worked to improve CrossFire performance of, include Crysis 3, which sees improved frame-pacing; Far Cry 3, which sees improved 3-GPU and 4-GPU scaling; Anno 2070, which sees an overall CrossFire scaling improvement of 34 percent; Titanfall, which sees reduced game flickering an micro-stutter; and Metro: Last Light, which sees 10 percent improvement in CrossFire scaling. The driver also addresses bugs related to 3x1 Eyefinity setups using three Ultra HD displays. For gamers running Battlefield 4 with its Mantle renderer, AMD addressed the performance slowdown seen when switching windows using Alt+Tab; and fuzzy textures when playing the game on rotated displays.

Unreal Engine 4.1 Released - tech

Epic Games has released the first major update to Unreal Engine 4 since its public launch as a $19 per month subscription-based service at the 2014 Game Developers Conference.
ARY, N.C. (April 24, 2014) - Epic Games has released the first major update to Unreal Engine 4 since its public launch as a $19 per month subscription-based service at the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC).

With the release of Unreal Engine 4.1, all subscribers who are registered Xbox or PlayStation developers, including members of the ID@Xbox independent developer program, can receive access to the engine’s complete source code for their respective console platforms, at no extra cost.

For the past two years, some of the world’s leading console developers have been using UE4 to build their next-generation games, so the widespread console availability of this engine is highly notable for the indie developer community.

The 4.1 update also includes SteamOS and Linux support, refined iOS and Android workflow, new game templates both for C++ programmers and designers using Blueprint visual scripting, and more than 100 improvements based on community feedback. In addition, Epic’s Elemental demo is now available for free for subscribers to download from the engine’s Marketplace so that developers can learn from its construction and use its assets in their own projects.

As a demonstration of UE4’s high-end console support, the engine includes "Shooter Game," a sample project created by Epic and released for free on Marketplace. The sample is now undergoing certification on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Driven by feedback from the community and informed by Epic’s experience building games such as “Fortnite,” Unreal Engine 4 is evolving at an incredible pace. Its first month has seen thousands of development forks created on GitHub to improve and extend the engine in an open, collaborative manner. Starting now, developers on GitHub can see Epic’s internal development process in real-time, with live-streaming source code updates.

Epic will be covering the 4.1 update more in-depth on the weekly live broadcast at Twitch.TV/UnrealEngine today at 2 p.m. ET. To learn more about UE4 or to download the tools, visit www.unrealengine.com.

  • Microsoft Research reveals Holograph, brings Leia hologram to life - All those cool 3D holographic interactive user interfaces that people see in sci-fi movies and TV shows are finally getting closer to reality. Microsoft Research recently showed off a new project called Holograph that was made to render large data, not just in 3D, but in a way that it looks like it is being projected above a display.
  • Fire TV vs. Roku vs. Chromecast vs. Apple TV - Google is said to be looking into ways to make end-to-end encryption tools such as PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) easier to use with Gmail. The utility is already compatible with Gmail but its complex nature has kept it from reaching a mainstream audience. How exactly Google plans to integrate PGP into Gmail is a bit of a mystery as it poses some pretty significant issues. With end-to-end encryption, only the sender and receiver can read the contents of a message. That'd be problematic for Google as the company currently scans Gmail messages for advertising keywords. What's more, Google would have to contend with the issue of lost passwords. Under such a scenario, only the end user would ever have access to the decryption key meaning the provider couldn't recover data without it.

  • The Start Menu will reportedly return to Windows this fall - At BUILD 2014, Microsoft surprised many by showing off a Start menu that will be making its way back into Windows. After Windows 8 debuted without the iconic feature, there was a great deal of negative feedback, and along with numerous other contentious issues surrounding the OS, it eventually lead to the departure of Steven Sinofsky. But with Windows 8.1 and its first major update, Microsoft has been slowly re-introducing classic features and has made a commitment to making the OS more mouse- and keyboard-friendly. Ever since the Start menu was shown off, everyone has been wondering when we will see it return to the OS and, according to Wzor, the answer will be this fall. Right now, it is unclear if the update to bring the Start menu back will be called Windows 8.2, or will simply be 'Windows 8.1 Update 2'. Either way, this is the first bit of semi-credible information about when we can expect the Start menu to return to the OS.
  • Canonical trying to lure XP users with the release of Ubuntu 14.04 - After the recent release of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS for servers, Canonical has announced the brand new desktop version. With Windows XP's life support having ended on April 8, the latest iteration of Ubuntu is a more-than-suitable replacement for the dead OS. Along with other XP users switching to Ubuntu, the French police force is moving over 70,000 computers from XP to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, which is guaranteed to be supported for 5 years after the initial release. The Chief Information and Security Officer in Gendarmerie, Stephane Dumon has stated that their "project to replace Windows XP with Ubuntu on over 70,000 desktops is returning significant benefits; already we've lowered the total cost of ownership for a ratio of 40 percent, eliminated license costs and radically reduced technical problems."

  • GeForce GTX 780 Ti Round Up: EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI - All three cards get kudos for running near silent throughout the majority of testing. This is a testament to each company's custom cooling solution and we'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite among the three. If forced to pick a winner, MSI would get the nod by a hair. Not only did it run quiet, but it was far slower to heat up than the other two cards when running a 100 percent GPU load. This might be due to the semi-open air design of the cooler's minimalistic shroud.

The problem wasn't with Windows XP itself, but with new antivirus definitions that were made available for the free Microsoft Security Essentials program. The fix is quite simple. Boot into safe mode and disable inside Msconfig from both the services and the startup. Then reboot into regular mode and uninstall it.

  • AT&T Doesn't Like 600MHz Auction Rules, May Skip It - AT&T indicated to the Federal Communications Commission this week that it disapproves of proposed rules for the upcoming incentive auction for 600MHz spectrum. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has floated a plan that would reserve spectrum in each market for companies that don't already have low-band spectrum. Thanks to its 700MHz spectrum holdings, AT&T would be restricted from bidding in about 70% of U.S. markets for the 600MHz spectrum. Wheeler's proposal has yet to be officially implemented, but AT&T's Joan Marsh said, "If the restrictions as proposed are adopted, AT&T will need to seriously consider whether its capital and resources are directed toward other spectrum opportunities that will better enable AT&T to continue to support high-quality LTE network deployments to serve its customers." If AT&T doesn't participate in the auction, it could hinder the FCC's goal of generating money to build a public safety network. The FCC is scheduled to vote on the incentive auction rules by May.

  • UK Teachers Want Parents to Cut-Off Their Children's Internet - A group of UK teachers are urging parents to limit their children's time on tablets and other technology, as they claim a rising number of young students lack the motor skills needed to play with building blocks while older students are unable to take written exams with pen and paper. According to The Telegraph, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers wants parents to turn off the Wi-Fi at night before bed so students get a good night's sleep instead of playing on tablets all night. The association claims that younger students as young as three or four can swipe on an iPad screen, but have little or no dexterity in their fingers to use building blocks. As for the older students, the association said their attention spans are limited in the classroom due to overexposure to technology. They further claimed that these students can't implement the skills they read in their textbooks, but have exceptional technical skills when it comes to consumer electronics.

Alien: Isolation video shows off 1970s tech - tech

To stay faithful to the original source, Alien: Isolation takes a retro look to the future with a design aesthetic which developer Creative Assembly describes as lo-fisci-fi. It's clunky, it's chunky, it's push-button and analogue. There are no phasers or lasers, and the smartest weapons you find may be tied together with duct tape and string. A world very much of CRT not LCD, Alien: Isolation may be set in the future but it's very much baked in the past.

Discover the true meaning of fear in Alien: Isolation, a survival horror set in an atmosphere of constant dread and mortal danger. Fifteen years after the events of Alien, Ellen Ripley's daughter, Amanda enters a desperate battle for survival, on a mission to unravel the truth behind her mother's disappearance. As Amanda, you will navigate through an increasingly volatile world as you find yourself confronted on all sides by a panicked, desperate population and an unpredictable, ruthless Alien. Underpowered and underprepared, you must scavenge resources, improvise solutions and use your wits, not just to succeed in your mission, but to simply stay alive.

  • Amazon merging Kindle documents & Cloud Drive - 10GB free storage - Good news this morning for Kindle owners; it seems you're likely to be waking up to some changes in the way your cloud documents storage works that results in a combined 10GB of free Amazon Cloud Drive. I've received a tip that this is pushing out, and that the merger of 5GB of Kindle documents and 5GB of Amazon Cloud Drive is now amounting to a combined 10GB account that covers everything. This is only applying to Kindle customers. Indeed, those of us without a Kindle are still languishing back on the 5GB free tier. The new combined account means that your previously Kindle exclusive 5GB can be used for other files such as images and videos. And that's just great.

  • Phone Makers, Carriers to Add Anti-Theft Tools to Phones - The CTIA Wireless Association today said a number of handset makers and wireless network operators have agreed to a basic framework that will eventually provide consumers with better anti-theft tools for their smartphones. The Smartphone Anti-Theft Voluntary Commitment is meant to deter theft while also giving phone makers and carriers room to innovate. All the companies agreed to implement a baseline anti-theft tool preloaded on (or downloadable to) all wireless smartphones manufactured after July 2015. This tool will let consumers: remotely wipe their data; render the smartphone inoperable to unauthorized users; prevent reactivation without owner's consent; and reverse the inoperability of the device as well as restore the data to the device in the event it is found by the owner. Consumers will also be free to use whatever third-party anti-theft tools they wish in addition to those provided by the phone maker. All signatories will make the baseline anti-theft tool available with all its core features. The initial batch of companies signing the commitment include: Apple; Asurion; AT&T; Google; HTC America; Huawei; Motorola; Microsoft; Nokia; Samsung; Sprint; T-Mobile; U.S. Cellular; and Verizon Wireless. Some of those who haven't signed include Kyocera, LG, Sony, ZTE. A number of lawmakers lauded the commitment, which arrives several months after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler mandated that wireless companies come up with such a solution or face regulatory intervention.
