Veteran NASCAR driver Tony Stewart hit young racer Kevin Ward Jr, who was walking on the track after they collided on the previous lap. Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said his department's investigation is not criminal and that Stewart was 'fully co-operative' and appeared 'very upset' by what had happened. A video of the incident posted on YouTube shows 20-year-old Ward, wearing a black helmet and firesuit on the dimly lit track, leave his vehicle, which had spun into the wall at the side of the track, apparently to protest with Stewart. Ward is shown pointing in the direction of Stewart as he completes his next lap, gesticulating angrily as other racers pass him. The racer then steps into the oncoming traffic before he is suddenly struck and flung 50ft along the track. The video showed Ward standing to the right of Stewart's familiar No 14 car, which seemed to kick out from the rear and hit him.

DirectX 12 Promises Significant Performance Gains - tech
(hx) 06:22 AM CEST - Aug,15 2014 - Post a comment / read (9)
Microsoft has been touting the improvements which DirectX 12 will bring to the table. Listening to the claims of its creator is one thing, but seeing real-world tests on actual hardware is another. At SIGGRAPH 2014, Intel has demonstrated the performance and power benefits of DirectX 12 on a Surface Pro 3 (which uses the company's HD4400 graphics chip.) The demonstration renders an asteroid field with 50,000 unique asteroids in it which equates to 50,000 draws per frame. Each asteroid is unique through procedurally-generating a combination of vertices, textures, and constants. To show the improvements, the demo is able to switch between DirectX 11 and 12 at the press of a button whilst locking the frame rate to keep the GPU workload constant.

When rendering exactly the same content, DirectX 12's power consumption was impressively over 50% less than its predecessor. A key improvement in DirectX 12 is its ability to intuitively share the workload across multiple cores, and the performance gains we are seeing here show this in action. Reduced power consumption doesn't, of course, directly relate to increased performance. It does however lead to a much cooler device which as a side-effect allows the GPU to run hotter and faster. In a blog post on MSDN, Microsoft claims: "In some cases, DirectX 12 can take a game that’s otherwise unplayable on DirectX 11 without even increasing the power your device consumes!" Intel demonstrated this through unlocking the frame rate in their demo to show a 50% increase in FPS (frames per second) using DirectX 12 - despite not drawing any extra power. Whilst not directly comparable, it could show promise to boosting the Xbox One's prowess.

OpenGL 4.5 Specifications Released - tech
(hx) 06:18 AM CEST - Aug,12 2014 - Post a comment
At Siggraph 2014, the Khronos Group has announced both OpenGL 4.5 and, more excitingly, the Next Generation OpenGL Initiative. OpenGL 4.5, except for some new Direct3D 11 emulation features for easier porting, is your fairly standard annual OpenGL update. Next Generation OpenGL (OpenGL NG), however, is a complete rebuild of the OpenGL API. The idea, much like AMD's Mantle and DirectX 12, is to build an entirely new version of OpenGL that removes a lot of the abstraction, significantly reducing the overhead and inefficiencies when working at a low level with the bare metal GPU hardware. Khronos has an uphill struggle ahead, though: While AMD and Microsoft are focusing on their own specific implementations, OpenGL NG will be a cross-platform solution for all operating systems and hardware makers, just like the existing OpenGL specs.
New functionality in the core OpenGL 4.5 specification includes:

-Direct State Access (DSA) – object accessors enable state to be queried and modified without binding objects to contexts, for increased application and middleware efficiency and flexibility;
-Flush Control – applications can control flushing of pending commands before context switching – enabling high-performance multithreaded applications; -Robustness – providing a secure platform for applications such as WebGL browsers, including preventing a GPU reset affecting any other running applications;
-OpenGL ES 3.1 API and shader compatibility – to enable the easy development and execution of the latest OpenGL ES applications on desktop systems;
-DX11 emulation features – for easier porting of applications between OpenGL and Direct3D.

  • Alienware to introduce new slim line of gaming laptops - The company has confirmed that it is working on a new line of slimmer gaming laptops, the Alienware 13 line. The laptop is fueled by an Nvidia GTX  860M GPU, up to 16GB DDR3 memory, and the latest Intel CPU, which will eventually be upgraded to the next-generation Broadwell processors, but not at launch.
  • WD Red Pro Review: 4 TB Drives for NAS Systems Benchmarked - Finally we have the WD Red Pro, which aims to strike a balance between performance, power consumption and price. The attractive pricing (given the warranty) makes up for the fact that it doesn't impress in any particular category compared to the competition. If Seagate's Enterprise Capacity drive were to retail for the same price as that of the Red Pro, the choice would be a no-brainer in favour of the Seagate unit. But right now that is not the case, and Western Digital continues to present a unique value proposition with the Red Pro lineup.
  • Microsoft Introduces $40 TV Tuner for Xbox One in Europe -  Microsoft is planning to release a digital TV tuner adapter to allow European Xbox One owners to turn their consoles into a TV set-top box. Launching in October in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the UK, the 29.99 EUR ($40) accessory will plug into a USB port to pick up channels using free-to-air DVB-T, DVB-T2, and DVB-C television standards. This will enable the TV functionality on Xbox One alongside TV listings from OneGuide and a pause live TV option without the need for a separate set-top box and IR blasting through Kinect. Although pausing live TV will undoubtedly use part of the 500GB of hard drive storage on the Xbox One temporarily, Microsoft has not committed to providing DVR functionality with its digital TV tuner to schedule and record programs. It's possible Microsoft may choose to enable DVR functionality in a future update. Microsoft's Xbox One Digital TV Tuner accessory is similar to Sony's PlayTV device for the PlayStation 3. PlayTV allowed the PS3 to act as a digital TV tuner and DVR, but Sony has not yet revealed a similar device for the PlayStation 4.
  • Windows Threshold preview said to be on track for fall release - Microsoft is polishing up Windows Threshold and so far this week, Neowin has revealed that virtual desktops will be coming to the updated Windows OS and that the Charms bar will be getting overhauled as well. While there has not been a single leaked build of the OS (yet), it does look like the plans to release a preview of the OS later this year are still on track. Mary Jo Foley, who reiterated and confirmed this scoop about the virtual desktops, also reports that her sources have indicated that a fall public preview for Threshold is still on track for release. If true, that means that Microsoft is quickly moving towards a stable release of the OS and we will likely hear more about other new features in the very near future. Microsoft is pushing aggressively ahead of Windows Threshold as it knows that to get consumers to upgrade from Windows 7 or even XP, it needs to bring back the Start menu. While most of you who have jumped to Windows 8 have easily adapted to the new setup, consumers (and the enterprise) in the wider market have spoken and they want the Start menu back before they think about upgrading.
  • CryptoLocker victims are able to decrypt their files for free - CryptoLocker would encrypt the files on the victim's storage using AES-256 bit encryption and demand about $300 in bitcoin in order to retrieve the decryption key. If the victim didn't pay within a specified time, then the victim's files would remain encrypted forever. Well, until a couple of days ago, at least. Computer security experts and researchers from the firms Fox-IT and FireEye have collaborated to reverse engineer the CryptoLocker software in a project they called "Operation Tovar." The collaboration between the two has led to the identification of many of the private keys used by CryptoLocker, and they have subsequently developed a free decryption assistance website and tool to help victims of the ransomware retrieve their data at no cost. The site requires the user to upload any file that has been affected by the ransomware (they specify that they will not store or view the file), and the tool will email the user the relevant private key that can be used for decryption. At that point the user must download a specific tool, enter the private key and the location of the encrypted file, and the tool will decrypt the encrypted file
  • Justin.tv Shuts Down - Justin.tv has shut its doors for good today. Visitors to either the main Justin.tv site or any of its subchannels are now redirected to a goodbye message announcing that "the Justin.tv website, mobile apps, and APIs are no longer in service." Following that announcement is a Q&A about the closure, and the first question - "Why?" - dances around the answer. The FAQ indirectly blames the popularity of Twitch: "Unfortunately that means we need to shut down Justin.tv." Such an answer only fuels recent rumors and reports that have all but confirmed that YouTube will soon acquire Twitch for $2 billion. Should that happen, today's news hints at Twitch's services remaining largely unchanged, as Justin.tv users are advised to transfer their account to Twitch by September 5, 2014. (Paid Justin.tv users have already had their accounts converted to similar services on Twitch.) As of press time, Justin.tv's main blog had not been updated to reflect this news; its last post, dated May 29, was an announcement that its live-video archives would be deleted on June 15.
  • Apple iPhone 6 Release Update  - According to a source of MacRumors, the Apple iPhone 6 will be released on the 14th of October. Apparently that Tuesday will be an "immense" day for Apple and the month of October will be a busy one for the company. The month, of course, should be a busy one if they are indeed going to release the much anticipated next-gen iPhone on the above said date. And maybe Apple will also show off the iWatch, OS X Yosemite, new iPads, and new Macs in October, as rumored earlier. The company reportedly is also planning a media event for September 16. According to a report which came out last week, the company has plans for an event scheduled to happen in mid-September for showing off the iPhone 6 and iOS 8. But there are no hints about whether both the upcoming iPhones, the 4.7 and 5.5 inch models, will be released on the same date. Several rumors have pointed towards a delayed release, in late December or 2015, for the larger model due to production issues.

  • China bans Apple devices from government over 'security concerns' - Apple is the latest foreign tech company to fall foul of new procurement guidelines for China's government, as the country continues to reduce its dependence on hardware and software from international firms. The government has now excluded Apple from a list of approved companies from which devices can be purchased for government use, due to vaguely defined 'security concerns'. Government officials, speaking with Bloomberg on condition of anonymity, said that ten Apple products - including iPads and MacBooks - had previously been on the list drafted in June, but were dropped when it was formally approved in July. Apple joins a range of other firms whose products can no longer be bought with public money in China. In May, the Chinese government banned Windows 8 from its procurement list, and indicated that it was looking at alternatives to IBM servers in its banking sector, to prevent international surveillance. This week, China also barred Symantec and Kaspersky from providing software to government bodies.

Heffernan spent three days during the summer solstice capturing material for the film. Most night shots were taken with 25-second exposures on two Canon EOS 6D's using multiple wide, fast lenses. My favorite part of the clip is the star trails which were created using a rendering program called Starstax. There's just something mesmerizing about seeing the Earth rotate in such a manner.

Steam Hardware & Software Survey: July 2014 - tech
(hx) 08:40 AM CEST - Aug,07 2014 - Post a comment
Valve has just posted the Steam Hardware & Software Survey: July 2014. There are no sweeping changes to report. Compared to last month's results, Steam Linux usage dipped slightly to 1.11% from 1.20% the month prior. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit lost some ground though Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS rolled out in this time to reflect the shift, while Linux Mint 17 Qiana gained a little bit. Still, these survey results aren't too surprise and for over a year have just shown Linux floating around a 1~1.5% market-share on Valve's Steam platform. I don't anticipate any major changes in Linux gaming usage until Steam boxes are out there and SteamOS has further advanced, or there's some compelling reason otherwise for Windows gamers to migrate over to Linux.

AMD Unveils Radeon R7 Series Gaming SSDs - tech
(hx) 09:17 AM CEST - Aug,06 2014 - Post a comment / read (5)
According to this post at WCCF Tech, AMD is set to announce new Radeon R7 Series SSDs later this month. The blurry screenshots shows 120GB, 240GB and 480GB drives made by OCZ.
AMD is expanding its product offerings in a very imaginative way, something that is a very healthy habit for companies to adopt. It has just recently unveiled its Solid State Drive (SSD) lineup labelled Radeon SSDs. The lineup revealed so far consists of 3 SSDs of the Radeon R7 SSD Family and consists of 120 GB, 240GB and 480GB respectively. As usual our Chinese friends over at EXPReview.com came through with details about the lineup

t would appear that AMD has plans to become an all-in-one company for the needs of PC Gamers. They are already supplying CPUs, GPUs, APUs, RAM and now they will be churning out SSDs too. I have a feeling that in a few years we are going to be looking at PC builds consisting entirely of AMD parts. Now as you may have noticed, these SSDs are coming in three variants. The maximum capacity of these SSDs is almost half a Terabyte while the minimum is 120 GB. Which makes sense, because anything less than 120GB is really not feasible for installing an operating system on. Less than 120 GB SSDs can be used as scratch disks for professional programs but that isn’t really AMD’s target audience

Nvidia GeForce GTX 880 will launch in September - tech
(hx) 05:24 PM CEST - Aug,05 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
Perhaps the most credible source yet has appeared, giving us an indication of when Nvidia's upcoming flagship, the GeForce GTX 880, will be released. According to a Gigabyte executive, interviewed by Expreview at the ChinaJoy Conference in Shanghai, Nvidia will launch the new GPU in September. Gigabyte themselves are working on a custom-cooled variant of the GTX 880 called the G1.Gamer, which will feature a cooler capable of dissipating up to 650W of heat. The heatsink is apparently large enough that it can passively cool the GTX 880 in some situations, meaning the included fans are only necessary during heavy loads. That's not to say the Maxwell-based GTX 880 will have a TDP of 650W; it'll likely be something much more reasonable, similar to what we've seen in current GPUs. The card will feature Nvidia's GM204 GPU, with rumored specs indicating a 256-bit memory bus and 4GB of GDDR5 memory (at least initially). Videocardz, who also state that the GTX 880 will launch in September, believe the graphics card will retail between $400 and $450. This would place the card at a similar launch price to the GTX 770, if true.

DirectX 12 Won't Fix Xbox One's 1080p Problem - tech
(hx) 08:37 PM CEST - Aug,04 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
DirectX 12 won't be the answer to Xbox One's 1080p problems, CD Projekt RED's lead engine programmer Balazs Torok believes, with the new tech simply letting developers increase the polygon count rather than boost resolutions. "I think there is a lot of confusion around what and why DX12 will improve," Balazs told GamingBolt. "Most games out there can't go 1080p because the additional load on the shading units would be too much. For all these games DX12 is not going to change anything. "They might be able to push more triangles to the GPU but they are not going to be able to shade them, which defeats the purpose," he continued. "To answer the first question, I think we will see a change in the way graphics programmers will think about their pipelines and this will result in much better systems hopefully." Microsoft announced DirectX 12 earlier this year, but warned that it wouldn't make any huge differences to Xbox One's capabilities.

TechNews - USB security flaw, no fix in sight - tech

  • Apple has refreshed its MacBook Pros with updated specs, price - Apple has announced that they have updated the specs on their premium line of laptops, the MacBook Pro, and have lowered the price for entry too. All of the Retina laptops now come with faster processors, double the memory in both entry-level configurations, and a new, lower starting price for the top-of-the-line 15-inch notebook. The price was also dropped on the non-Retina MacBook Pro too, by $100, which Apple claims is very popular with folks who are switching from Windows. The new Retina machine start at $1299 for the 13in model and come with a 2.6 GHz dual-core Core i5, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The 15in Retina laptops now starts with a Core i7, 16GB of RAM and is $100 cheaper than the prior iteration. The new lower price on some of the machines will likely appease critics who say that Apple laptops are overpriced. Even though the price cut was only $100 and not all machines got the price drop, it will likely help the company sell a few more units as it closes the gap between the pricing on Apple laptops and comparable Windows machines. The updated laptops are available today on Apple's website and at their retail outlets.
  • For $99, you can now get a quad-core 3G Windows 8.1 tablet - Since Microsoft announced its decision to waive its OS licensing fees on phones and small tablets, many more companies have chosen to dip their toes into the Windows waters, and the latest to do so is China's Kingsing. The company already sells a range of affordable Android handsets, but it has now shown off its first Windows tablet, the W8, which will go on sale for just $99, as GizmoChina reports. Like the Emdoor device, the W8 has specs appropriate to its low cost. That means you'll get a quad-core 1.8GHz Intel Bay Trail-T processor and 1GB of RAM, along with 16GB of onboard storage and an SD card slot. You'll also find an 8-inch IPS LCD screen with 1280x800px resolution, and there are front and rear 2MP cameras too, as well as stereo speakers. The device isn't too chunky at 10mm-thick, and even features 3G connectivity (with support for GSM, CDMA and TD-SCDMA), along with 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB and microHDMI ports, and a 4500mAh battery. It even includes Windows 8.1 with Bing, rather than the more functionally limited Windows RT. Not bad at all for $99. It's not clear yet whether or not the device will go on sale outside of China.
  • Microsoft rolls up more Windows Server 2012 R2 updates - Microsoft has issued a new "rollup" of enhancements and fixes to Windows Server 2012 R2. The new rollup is the third for the OS and, as is described here, offers downloads for more than 40 issues. Perhaps the most notable addition is the Office 365 management pack, as it gives Windows Server admins the chance to "monitor the health of their Office 365 subscriptions and provide alerts when subscribed services may be experiencing an outage."  There's also "two new dashboards focused on visualizing resource consumption of virtualization hosts and VMs" that add functionality to Microsoft's Virtual Machine Manager. Those with big virtual machine fleets may also appreciate the scalable VM backup tool added to Data Protection Manager. Folks who rely on Operations Manager have the most to gain from implementing the rollup, as it offers 16 enhancements for that package.
  • Microsoft's First-ever Companywide Hackathon  - Each fall, for many years, Microsoft employees have bundled up and made the trek to Seattle's Safeco Field to listen as top executives attempted to inspire them with a vision for the company's future. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addresses employees to launch the hackathon Tuesday morning. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addresses employees to launch the hackathon Tuesday morning. Satya Nadella is replacing that tradition with a new one: Under sunny summer skies in Redmond on Tuesday morning, the new Microsoft CEO cranked a siren to start a 38.5-hour hackathon - bringing together more than 10,000 employees from across the company to work on a wide variety of projects. These types of events are designed to inspire creativity and allow employees to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions or applications that fill a gap not currently offered by the company. The hackathon is a chance for any employee to step away from their daily duties and pursue projects of passion and of course, Microsoft hopes that some of these side projects will turn into new additions to their portfolio. While they may only have 36 hrs to complete an app or feature, if a robust idea is generated and proves that it scales well, you can bet that Microsoft will fund the project to completion.
  • Researchers uncover fundamental USB security flaw, no fix in sight - A pair of security researchers from SR Labs have uncovered a fundamental flaw in the way USB devices work. It affects every single USB device out there and worst yet, there's no line of defense short of prohibiting USB stick sharing or filling your USB ports with superglue.

  • GameStop to Roll Out a Credit Card with a 26.99% Interest Rate - GameStop is about to unleash their own credit card on to the unsuspecting world. Destructoid was provided images and information regarding a GameStop credit card that features an insanely high interest rate of 26.99%. At present, the average interest rate (APR) is about 13% for cards like this. Reportedly, anybody that is a PowerUp Rewards member is already pre-approved for the card. Those who use the card will get 15,000 bonus points for signing up if you are a Pro Member and 5,000 points for being a Basic PowerUp member. The sources close to Destructoid have been unable to say specifically when GameStop plans to roll this plan out to consumers. While that interest rate is insanely high, chances are if you are shopping at GameStop on a regular enough basis to be a PowerUp Pro member, you probably don't much care about your financial situation that much to begin with. For everyone else, it may end up being a hard lesson in how to handle finances if they think this card will let them pick up a new piece of hardware without hassle.

  • T-Mobile Drops the Cost of Family Plans to $100 - T-Mobile has announced a promotional plan that undercuts AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon's offerings dramatically. T-Mobile says a family of four can sign up for a T-Mobile Simple Choice plan with 10GB of LTE data for $100 per month. T-Mobile says each line receives 2.5GB of data in addition to unlimited talk, text, free 2G international data, and unlimited streaming music. The promotional price is good until January 2016 and is available beginning July 30 through September 30. AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon all charge $160 per month for similar four-line plans
  • French Firm Makes Surprise Bid for T-Mobile - Iliad, a telecom business based in France, has made an unsolicited offer to purchase T-Mobile U.S. The company submitted the offer to T-Mobile's board within the last week. It is offering $15 billion in cash for a controlling 56.6% stake in the company. Iliad's role in the French mobile market is similar to T-Mobile's in the U.S. market. It sees T-Mobile as a natural fit and a way to break into the U.S. market. "The U.S. mobile market is vast and attractive," said Iliad in a statement. "T-Mobile has successfully established itself in the market by positioning itself, in many respects, in a similar way to Iliad in France." Iliad's offer complicates Sprint's interest in T-Mobile. Sprint and T-Mobile are believed to have agreed to the broad strokes of an acquisition, but are still hammering out details. Sprint has not made a formal offer for T-Mobile, but may have to accelerate its plans with Iliad's offer now on the table. T-Mobile has not commented publicly on Iliad's offer, but it did report second quarter earnings today. T-Mobile added 1.5 million new customers this quarter and has expanded the availability of VoLTE nationwide as of today.
  • BlackBerry to Buy Encryption Company - BlackBerry today indicated it has agreed to buy a small German company called Secusmart. Secusmart specializes in voice and data encryption. BlackBerry plans to use Secusmart's technology to further shore up its own enterprise and government offerings. Secusmart is already being used by government officials in Canada and Germany. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. BlackBerry has retreated from its consumer-chasing tactics and is focusing efforts on selling secure devices and mobile device management tools to businesses and governments.
  • Cortana Now Shows Foursquare Recommendations - Microsoft has said it has enabled Foursquare recommendations within Cortana, the virtual personal assistant that's part of Windows Phone 8.1. Cortana will now proactively showcase local recommendations on handsets, though the feature must first be enabled by device owners. Users can click on the items to discover more information about the nearby venues, but the separate Foursquare application is required to access that info. There is no need to update or download anything to see the recommendations within Cortana, as Cortana's Foursquare integration comes from Microsoft's servers. It is free to use.

  • Verizon To Throttle 4G LTE Users With Unlimited Plans - If you have an unlimited plan with Verizon, I've got bad news for you. According to Verizon this change only applies to the top 5% of users, who typically consume more than 4.7GB of data per month. Rather than use straight throttling, Verizon will prioritize the traffic of subscribers who pay for tiered data plans (2GB per month, 4GB per month, etc.) The prioritization scheme will be put to work in high-traffic areas when cell sites become congested. The change goes into effect October 1. Verizon has applied similar network management techniques to its 3G customers since 2011.

Nvidia Responds to AMD's Cheating Allegations - tech
(hx) 10:16 AM CEST - Jul,27 2014 - Post a comment / read (2)
A few weeks back in the Maximum PC No BS Podcast #226, AMD's newly arrived Gaming Scientist Richard Huddy made some bold accusations about Nvidia's developer relations, such as accusing the company of handing out "black box" files designed to make Radeon cards look bad, and using sketchy contract clauses. Nvidia's Distinguished Engineer Tom Petersen and Senior Director of Engineering Rev Lebaradian came on to the podcast to tell Nvidia's side of the story (Spoilers: They deny the cheating allegations). Also, they bring in the newly launched Shield Tablet and talk about it for a bit. They also answer several reader questions.

When MaximumPCMagazine asked about Mantle (16:00 mark), Tom Petersen said AMD is free to develop and innovate in any area they think is important.
We don't know much about Mantle, we are not part of Mantle. And clearly if they see value there they should go for it. And if they can convince game developers to go for it, go for it. It's not an Nvidia thing. The key thing is to develop great technologies that deliver benefits to gamers. Now in the case of Mantle it's not so clear to me that there is a lot of obvious benefits there.

$299 Nvidia Shield Tablet Coming July 29 - tech
(hx) 01:55 AM CEST - Jul,23 2014 - Post a comment
Nvidia wasn't able to get its graphics chips into either the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4, so it's doing the next best thing by trying to obviate home consoles altogether. Today the company introduces its new $299 Shield Tablet: an 8-inch Android device designed to sate all your gaming needs at once. It's powered by the souped-up Tegra K1 processor that Nvidia debuted to much fanfare in January, and already has a number of major game titles optimized to make use of its extra power. It's also compatible with a new Shield wireless controller and the same game-streaming capability as its predecessor Shield - allowing you to remotely play a game running on your PC at home. With a mini-HDMI connection outputting 1080p content to the nearest HDTV, the Shield Tablet can be a jack of all trades by either playing Android games or streaming PC titles into the living room.

The SHIELD Tablet has some impressive specifications for a tablet. Starting with the Tegra K1 SoC, it includes a full 192 CUDA core Kepler SMX unit. This is basically, with only minor modifications, the same GPU architecture found in the GTX 780 and similar desktop GeForce cards. The frequency hits as high as 2.2 GHz, which is faster than the 1.9 GHz of the Tegra 4. Both a 16GB Wi-Fi (802.11n 2x2 MIMO in both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz) and a 32GB LTE version will be available (pricing and availability on the next page). If you are looking for a 32GB Wi-Fi only model, you aren't going to find it. If you need more storage, there is a MicroSD card slot that supports up to 128 GB capacities. The display is a very sharp 8-in 1920x1200 IPS screen with multi-touch capability (of course) and the stylus technology is upgraded to DirectStylus 2 that claims improved sensitivity. The front facing speakers found on the Tegra Note 7 continue to exist here, which is a great move in my opinion; rear facing speakers just don't make sense anymore. The cameras (both front and rear) are 5MP.

The US and Canada will get the Shield Tablet first, with a 16GB Wi-Fi-only variant costing $299 in the States and a 32GB LTE model priced at $399. To get the maxed-out Shield Tablet suite, you'd need an extra $59 for the Wi-Fi controller, $39 for the cover, and a few extra bucks to buy the mini-HDMI cable that's sadly absent from the retail box. Europe follows from the middle of August and availability in other regions will be announced in the fall.

  • Russian government is looking to dump Microsoft for homegrown -  Thanks to political tension between the United States and Russia, along with newly announced sanctions by the US, Russia is looking to strike back at the US economy by limiting its use of Microsoft software. Only time will tell if Russia is able to successfully self-source replacements for these key applications and hardware. Seeing that enterprise-grade software is not built overnight, it could take time for this change in software procurement to have any significant impact on the bottom lines of US-based corporations. Russia and China always pirate software so I don't think this is a big deal :-) But A new OS would be nice!

  • Ukrainian Su25 fighter detected in close approach to MH17 before -The Russian military detected a Ukrainian SU-25 fighter jet gaining height towards the MH17 Boeing on the day of the catastrophe. Kiev must explain why the military jet was tracking the passenger airplane, the Russian Defense Ministry said. The presence of the Ukrainian military jet can be confirmed by video shots made by the Rostov monitoring center, Kartopolov stated. At the moment of the MH17 crash an American satellite was flying over the area of eastern Ukraine, according to Russia's Defense Ministry. It urged the US to publish the space photos and data captured by it. In addition, MH17 crashed within the operating zone of the Ukrainian army's self-propelled, medium-range surface-to-air "Buk" missile systems, the Russian general said. "We have space images of certain places where the Ukraine's air defense was located in the southeast of the country," Kartapolov noted. The first three shots that were shown by the general are dated July 14. The images show Buk missile launch systems in about 8km northwest of the city of Lugansk - a self-propelled vehicle and two launchers, according to the military official. Another image shows a radar station near Donetsk.

  • MediaTek Takes on Snapdragon 810 with New 64-bit Chip - MediaTek today took the wraps off its newest flagship processor chip for high-end phones. The MT6795 is a SoC (system on chip) combining an LTE radio with a 64-bit, 8-core processor at speeds up to 2.2 GHz. It supports displays up to 1600 x 2560. It also supports display refresh rate of 120 Hz for extra-smooth motion, and slow-motion video capture at 480 fps in full HD. The company has had little traction with phones bound for U.S. shores in recent years. According to Mohit Bhushan, Head of U.S. Business Development, the company is working to change that by having its processors certified directly by U.S. network operators. The MT6795 is currently undergoing that certification, and the company plans to have the chip in a device shipping in the U.S. next year. The chip competes with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810.
  • Leak suggests PCIe 3.0 coming to next-gen Intel chipsets - VR Zone's Chinese site has posted a series of official-looking slides indicating that next year's "100 Series" chipsets will support PCI Express 3.0. According to the slides, the flagship member of the family will be the Z170, which reportedly has up to 20 lanes of PCIe Gen3 connectivity. That sounds like an awful lot, but I count only six lanes reserved exclusively for PCIe slots and devices. Most of the lanes appear to be shared with the chipset's USB, SATA, and Ethernet interfaces.
  • Gigabyte and HyperX Break World Record - HyperX, a division of Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced that GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY Co. Ltd., overclocked HyperX memory to an astounding frequency of 4620MHz, the fastest memory speed in the world. The previous world record was also achieved in partnership with GIGABYTE and HyperX during Computex 2014. On June 30, GIGABYTE overclockers "HiCookie" and "Sofos1990" achieved the world's fastest memory frequency using one 4GB HyperX Predator 2933MHz DDR3 module (not yet available) on GIGABYTE's Z97-SOC FORCE LN2 motherboard. The true, live frequency was accurately read via oscilloscope, monitored by an official HWBOT representative, and then submitted on HWBOT.org.
  • LG Introduces A Very Flexible 18-Inch Display - We haven't heard about curved or flexible displays for a while now, but LG appears to have been busy with panels that are flexible, rollable, and transparent. The company has just introduced an 18-inch OLED panel that is flexible enough to be rolled into a tube that's just 3cm across. The new panel, which has a resolution of 1,200 x 810, features a new polyamide film on its back (and not the typical plastic)
  • Microsoft Downsizes, Kills off Nokia X - Microsoft has announced a sweeping company-wide re-organization that includes major changes to the mobile device business acquired from Nokia. Of Microsoft's 18,000 layoffs today, 12,500 are within the former Nokia units. Microsoft will combine the smartphone and feature phone units, with the feature phone operations continuing "for maximum efficiency with a smaller team." Nokia's Android-based Nokia X lineup will be abandoned. Select future models will be reworked to run Windows Phone to address new low price points for Lumia. Existing Nokia X phones will be supported, but the software will not appear in any new phones. The company will focus primarily on Windows-Phone-powered Lumia phones, and tablets. In an open email to employees, Stephen Elop explained that "the role of phones within Microsoft is different than it was within Nokia. Whereas the hardware business of phones within Nokia was an end unto itself, within Microsoft all our devices are intended to embody the finest of Microsoft's digital work and digital life experiences, while accruing value to Microsoft's overall strategy."
  • Nokia Rolling Out Windows Phone 8.1 To Lumias - Nokia today began rolling out automatic updates to Windows Phone 8.1 for all Lumia devices that currently have Windows Phone 8. The update includes all new Windows Phone 8.1 features from Microsoft, plus several new enhancements specific to Lumia devices. Lumia devices will gain updated Nokia Camera apps, plus Nokia Device Hub, which intelligently tracks accessories used with the device. The Lumia 1520 and Icon phones will gain Nokia Rich Recording and Dolby surround sound video capture, plus Screen Share. Standard Windows Phone 8.1 features include a more customizable home screen, Action Center quick settings, Wi-Fi Sense for automatically connecting to free hotspots, and the Cortana voice assistant. The update will roll out to all eligible devices "in the coming weeks."

  • Material so dark that it can't be processed by the human eye - Carbon nanotubes are often touted as one of the potential successors to modern-day silicon but apparently that's not the only thing they excel at. A British company by the name of Surrey NanoSystems has created a "strange, alien" material using carbon nanotubes that's described as the darkest in the world. Vantablack, as it's being called, is constructed by layering a sheet of aluminum foil with carbon nanotubes. The resulting material can absorb all but 0.035 percent of visible light - a new world record. It's actually so dark that the human eye cannot correctly process and understand what it is seeing. The fact that it doesn't reflect back much light makes it impossible to detect shapes and contours, making it look like an apparent abyss. Leeds University professor of color science and technology Stephen Westland said many people think black is the absence of light but unless you are looking at a black hole, nobody has actually seen something which has no light. This new material, he noted, is almost as close to a black hole as we could imagine. Actual applications are more serious, enabling astronomical cameras, telescopes and infrared scanning systems to function more effectively. Then there are the military uses that the material's maker, Surrey NanoSystems, is not allowed to discuss.

£45 for a CPU that clocks up to 4.5GHz - tech
(hx) 01:20 AM CEST - Jul,15 2014 - Post a comment
The chaps over at DigitalFoundry have decided to experiment with a new budget CPU in order to find out whether it would be able to deliver a 'console' experience. And to everyone's surprise, a system with a £45 CPU coupled and a £110 GPU is able to pull almost constant 30fps at 1080p and with High settings!
We're not the first to test the G3258 - far from it. We've heard stories of relatively disappointing 4.2GHz overclocks, all the way up to an incredible 4.9GHz. Our chip fell some way between the two at 4.5GHz, and required a slightly worrying 1.35v to get there while remaining stable. Any attempts to move beyond that, even to 4.6GHz, proved a complete waste of time. Overall though, a 'free' boost of 40 per cent in raw clock-speed is not to be sniffed at. We used a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo cooler during our testing, but subsequently found that even the stock heat sink and fan was able to manage the same overclock, though temperatures were rather toasty there at 80 degrees Celsius. However, remember that mileage may vary depending on the chip - something you have no control over when you make your purchase. That's important, bearing in mind that this is a budget processor. A £45 CPU is cheap, but another £20-£30 on a cooler brings you uncomfortably close to Core i3 and AMD FX-6300 territory.

The end results in terms of the raw metrics are expected - the raw clock-speed means you get stunning performance in single-threaded applications, especially with the 4.5GHz overclock in place, but up against the quads, the Pentium is completely annihilated. However, even with that in mind, the G3258 still works out pretty nicely in terms of price vs performance. The i7 sets you back around five times the cost and offers approximately three times the performance. Outside of power-intensive applications, the reality is that most processors spend most of the time in idling or low-power states - in those scenarios, any Haswell CPU offers the same baseline performance as any other.

The question is to what extent the Pentium's power deficit impacts gameplay. In our Digital Foundry PC build, we chose the FX-6300 for two reasons: firstly, modern processors offer an embarrassment of power for gaming applications - do you really need a CPU that can run a game at 200fps when your display only updates 60 times per second? And secondly, the AMD chip's core count mirrors console development. Our bet is still on AMD eventually winning out in the budget CPU market for these reasons, but it's clear that the G3258 is an immensely intriguing proposition. Intel rules with an iron fist in single-thread performance, and the new Pentium offers two cores and the ability to blast beyond beyond the base clocks of all of Intel's enthusiast processors - even the Devil's Canyon i7 4970K.

TechNews - Intel Core i7-4790K & i5-4690K tested - tech
(hx) 12:53 PM CEST - Jul,12 2014 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • Devil's Canyon Review: Intel Core i7-4790K and i5-4690K - If you own a relatively mediocre Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge or Haswell CPU, and have CPU limited throughput, there can be performance gains by investing into the Devil's Canyon (CPU + Z97 motherboard or Z87 with BIOS updates) ecosystem. These are 'enhancements' that Intel should build on for the future, and never remove. I am sure that many enthusiasts would like to see a return to soldering the IHS on, or a single version with this feature. For users relying on an Ivy Bridge stock system, the i7 Devil's Canyon can offer a 17% increase over the i7-3770K for CPU benchmarks. For those that need the fastest single-thread VT-d enabled processor according to Intel's specification pages, the i7-4790K also affords that opportunity. Users that are looking for the fastest GPU for gaming, at 1080p, might not be impressed by either the i5 or i7 Devil's Canyon. At least in our testing, we saw no improvement from Ivy Bridge to Devil's Canyon. One might argue that the story would be different for online gaming, or at larger resolutions, however for the latter there is more emphasis on upgrading the GPU over the CPU. While some hardware setups offer this mainstream CPU with three and four-way GPU gaming, typically we end up recommending the extreme platform due to fewer PCIe switches required.
  • Roundup: 5-way Radeon R9 280X Battle - Gigabyte's card is the best R9 280X available right now, offering the most out of box performance, best overclocking results, solid cooling and a competitive price. The R9 280X WindForce 3X OC's only weakness was in power consumption, drawing around 10% more total system power. However, that's due to Gigabyte's auto voltage feature, which we think is worthwhile for the added ease of overclocking and extra stability.

  • Sprint to Sell ZTE's Hotspot Projector - Sprint has announced it is bringing ZTE's smart projector to its network as the Sprint LivePro. ZTE announced the LivePro at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, which combines a digital projector and LTE mobile hotspot into one device. The LivePro runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and has its own 4-inch display. It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor with 2GB of RAM and runs the complete suite of Google services, such as Gmail, Maps, Drive, and YouTube. The projector can access Sprint's 3G/4G networks, including Sprint Spark, and can serve as a Wi-Fi mobile hotspot for up to eight other devices. The projector has USB and HDMI ports, and supports Miracast for mirroring the screens of nearby smartphones or tablets. The LivePro can display content up to 1080p HD at distances between 10 inches and 10 feet, for a maximum screen size of 120 inches. The bulb is rated at 100 lumens and provides 20,000 hours of of life. The LivePro has a 5,000mAh battery that can be used to charge other devices if need be. The Sprint LivePro will be available via most Sprint sales channels beginning July 11 for about $450, or $18.75 per month for 24 months with Sprint Easy Pay. Data plans start at $$35 per month for 3GB of combined 3G/4G data while on the Sprint network.
  • How Cortana could be integrated into Windows 8 - Before Cortana, there was Louise, and thanks to a Microsoft research video, we can see how Cortana could have be integrated into the OS, if Microsoft were ever to do so. The video, even though it is old as we can see Microsoft referring to the modern UI as Metro, shows us what a Windows 8 with Cortana could look like. The personal digital assistant is tucked away neatly in the top drawer and looks to be quite useful on a tablet. While we do not know if Microsoft has any intention of bringing Cortana to Windows 8, we do expect it to arrive at some point in the company's PC operating system. The question remains, why did Microsoft not integrate this feature into Windows?

The robots, which could potentially help construct Apple's rumored-to-be-upcoming iPhone 6, are in the final stages of testing and are set to be deployed in at least one Foxconn factory in the future. The robot worker plan was first announced in 2011, and the 'Foxbots' are entering the final stages of testing -- which means that they could see deployment on Foxconn assembly lines very soon. Each robot apparently costs upwards of $20,000 to create, but for a company which boasts a workforce of 1.23 million, assembly line robots could be very well worth the steep price tag. Foxconn is still in the midst of a long-term public relations crisis, after numerous allegations of employee mistreatment and multiple cases of employee suicide. Since robots don't feel emotion, Foxconn won't have to worry about providing basic human rights to the 1 million robotic workers it eventually plans to roll out.

  • 2015 Volkswagen Passat interior footage - Volkswagen has officially revealed the latest Euro-spec Passat B8, with the lightest version being just 1,315 kg (2,892 lbs). The German auto giants have big hopes from their flagship “business car” and have put some serious effort into making it up-to-date with some modern trends. The new Passat is based on an evolutionary design with dimensions a tad shorter, but wider and lower than the previous versions. The Passat B8 is 4767mm long, 1832mm wide and 1456mm tall (2mm shorter, 12mm wider and 6mm lower than the old one). The beauty of the new car is that it is considerably lighter than the previous ones. A saving of 85 kg (188 lbs) in a car like the Passat is a big deal. The engineers at VW have managed that by using a combination of high-strength steel, hot-formed steel and aluminum in the structure.

  • Samsung SSD 850 Pro (128GB, 256GB & 1TB) Review: Enter the 3D Era - Samsung does not cease to amaze me with their SSDs as the 850 Pro just kills it in every aspect. The performance is there. The endurance is the best of the class. Heck, even Samsung's feature and software suites beat the competition by a mile. To be honest, there is not a single thing missing in the 850 Pro because regardless of the angle you look at the drive from, it it will still top the charts. Samsung's heavy investment on NAND R&D and specifically 3D NAND is really paying off in the 850 Pro. Thanks to the more efficient structure of 3D NAND, Samsung has been able to improve all three main aspects of NAND i.e. performance, endurance and power consumption. It will be very hard for anyone to compete with the 850 Pro as the characteristics of V-NAND are superior compared to 2D NAND. The density is also very competitive against the smallest 2D NAND nodes, meaning that V-NAND should not carry a hefty premium over MLC.
  • Windows 9 Preview May Arrive Later This Year - Up until now, we've referred to the next big Windows release as "Threshold." This version is expected to appear in Q2/Q3 of 2015, arriving after what's currently dubbed as Windows 8.1 Update 3 in Q1 2015. Right now it's unclear whether the Threshold platform will be officially called Windows 9 or branded as Windows 8.2. Unnamed sources have told ZDNet that Windows 9 will address Windows 7 users by adding a whole set of new features for desktop users. Windows 8.1 Update 1 began to address this, but the news coming from those sources point to an even larger desktop-oriented focus. Windows Threshold will work and look differently on a desktop than it will on a touch-based device.
  • Windows Threshold: The modern UI takes a backseat for desktop users - Microsoft is hard at work on the next major update to Windows. Threshold, as it is currently known, is a wave of updates coming to Windows and other platforms; much like how Blue brought new features across many of Microsoft's key platforms. While it is still a little unclear if the Threshold update for PCs will be called Windows 9 or something else, what is starting to become known is how that OS will deviate from Microsoft's past. For mouse and keyboard users, Threshold will be the update many have been waiting for as Microsoft continues to move away form the Sinofsky vision of hybrid OS.
  • Galaxy S5 Mini Carries Over Most of Flagship's Features - Samsung today announced the Galaxy S5 mini, a smaller version of its 2014 flagship handset. The GS5 mini manages to include several of the GS5's main features, such as the heart rate monitor, water and dust resistance, fingerprint sensor, private/kid mode, and Ultra Power Savings Mode. Samsung did, however, downgrade many of the specs in order to make the smaller, less-expensive mini. The device has a 4.5-inch 720p HD Super AMOLED display. It is powered by a quad-core 1.4GHz processor with 1.5GB of RAM. The main camera captures up to 8 megapixels, while the secondary camera captures 2.1 megapixels. The camera offers Samsung functions such as Shot & More, Virtual Tour Shot, and S Studio. The phone has 16GB of internal storage and supports microSD cards up to 64GB. Connectivity options include HSPA/LTE, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and infrared. The Galaxy S5 mini will launch first in Russia this month, and Samsung said it will eventually expand to global markets over time. The Galaxy S5 mini will be offered in four colors: Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold. Pricing and availability in the U.S. was not specified. AT&T only recently launched the Galaxy S4 mini, which was announced last year.
  • Samsung calls iPhone users 'wall huggers' in new commercial - That moment when your phone conveniently chooses the most inconvenient time to run low on juice. Switch your Galaxy S 5 to Ultra Power Saving Mode or swap in a fresh spare battery and say goodbye to the wall huggers for good.
  • Official PayPal app now available for the Samsung Gear 2 - Announced during the launch of the Samsung Gear 2 at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, PayPal's dedicated app for the smartwatch is now available. The app allows you to check-in at local stores to pay for purchases, redeem offers, receive payment notifications, view and manage recent transactions directly from your wrist. The version currently available is listed as 1.40. If you've got a Gear 2 and a compatible device, head on over to Gear manager to download the PayPal app.
  • PayPal freezes over $275,000 in donations to email service - ProtonMail was supposed to be an easy email encryption tool that would finally give us an answer to Internet surveillance around the world. Instead, PayPal has frozen over $275,000 in donations to the project because, a PayPal representative told the company, the American payment service is not sure if ProtonMail is legal. Of course, it is absolutely legal to encrypt email. The freeze remains in place. Most incredible of all, the PayPal representative was unsure if ProtonMail has the necessary government approval to encrypt emails, as though anyone who encrypts needs a license to do so.

  • Windows 8.1 Update 2 Could Debut in July - The Russian super-leaker Wzor, who by the way is uncannily correct in his predictions, has pegged announcements on both operating systems coming on July 13-17 at the Worldwide Partner Conference. The first tweet goes like this: "Windows 8.1 Update 2 will be announced during Microsoft WPC 2014 July 13-17 Win 9 beta will be probably presented same time. by WZT" And the second: "JUNE 06/26/14, WINDOWS 8.1 UPDATE 2 RTM Build sign-OFF is more likely occurring now! by WZT"  Update 2 probably won't have a desktop Start menu or a Modern-Mix style capability for running Metro apps inside resizable windows on the desktop. Instead, most bets emphasize plumbing changes in Update 2 and very little if anything on the UI side.
  • YouTube to Get 60 FPS Option - YouTube will soon have the ability to display a higher framerate than most Xbox One games. They revealed earlier this evening that they will "soon" have 48 FPS and 60 FPS options for uploaders. They even went so far as to include a few sample videos that are apparently already running at 60 FPS. Unfortunately for everyone, it seems as though YouTube still insists at compressing the visual quality down just as much as before. So while the jump in framerate is certainly welcome, it doesn't really help when the overall quality still suffers greatly because of their re-encoding process. You can see the sample video here!

Earlier this year, there were rumors that Porsche were developing brand new V6 and V8s for the second generation Panamera, which is slated to be released in the second half of 2016.

The Baikal chips will be installed on computers of government bodies and in state-run firms, which purchase some 700,000 personal computers annually worth $500 million and 300,000 servers worth $800 million. • SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD (240GB, 480GB & 960GB) Review: The Fastest Just Got Faster - SanDisk dumps the 120GB model from the Extreme Pro lineup but adds a 960GB one. This move makes sense because 120GB cannot provide the same level of performance due to the lack of NAND but also falling NAND prices have made 1TB-class SSDs affordable for consumers. I am a bit surprised that SanDisk has decided to use 64Gbit parts in all models because usually 1TB-class SSDs have required the use of bigger 128Gbit dies. I guess it helps that the page size is 16KB for the 64Gbit part too because the main problem with high capacity SSDs is that when you double the capacity, the amount of pages you need to track doubles as well. With both 64Gbit and 128Gbit parts having the same page size, the issue is pretty much neutralized as long as the controller and firmware can talk to that many NAND die (this is where having your own firmware team helps).

  • Google's Nexus 9 revealed ahead of I/O conference - Android Police was able to get the scoop on the device that is referred to as 'Volantis' and is built by HTC. You can see in the image that the device, based on its specs, is quite slim at .31 inches. Seeing that it will be built out of aluminum, weigh 418g and come with all the expected sensors and chips, this device looks like it could be the best 8in Android tablet on the market. The 2048x1440 display will come in at 281 PPI, which means that it should offer up a fantastic viewing experience. Toss in the NVIDIA's latest chips, 2GB of RAM, and LTE, and we think this makes for one complete and compact tablet. The device is expected to be called the 'Nexus 9' as that is how it is referred to internally at Google. Google's I/O conference is next week and we expect to see this device shown off on stage.

  • Twitter Hit with Class Action Suit Over Automated Texts - A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Twitter this week for sending her unsolicited text messages. Beverly Nunes claims she never used Twitter, but began to receive marketing messages via Twitter's short code service. The problem affects recycled or reassigned phone numbers, which Twitter is supposed to monitor and remove from its marketing. Nunes received messages that were intended for the previous owner of her phone number. Further, Nunes claims Twitter isn't respecting consumers' wish to stop receiving such messages, which are supposed to cease once a consumer replies with "stop" or "unsubscribe." The class action suit wants Twitter to pay $500 for each offending text message under the penalties set forth in the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which prohibits automated--or robo--calling. The lawsuit is pursuing a total of $5 million in damages. Twitter has not yet responded publicly.
