Nvidia GeForce 344.48 WHQL Driver Now Available - tech
(hx) 07:23 PM CEST - Oct,22 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
Nvidia today made available its "Game Ready" GeForce 344.48 WHQL driver, which among other things brings support for Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) to desktop graphics cards based on the company's Kepler and Fermi architectures. DSR is a featured that was rolled out with Nvidia's Maxwell launch, and what it does is render games at a higher, more detail resolution and then shrinks them down to the resolution of your monitor. The GPU maker's bold claim is that DSR can give you 4K (3840x2160) quality graphics on any screen, including your Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) panel.

TechNews - iPad Air 2, Mac Upgrades - tech
(hx) 11:28 AM CEST - Oct,18 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • Nexus 9 vs iPad Air 2 - Spec Comparison - Planning to buy a new tablet in the very near future? If yes, your list of tablets to look at probably includes the newly unveiled Google Nexus 9 from HTC and the Apple iPad Air 2. The iPad Air 2's display is almost an inch larger than that of the Nexus 9. But the Google tablet wins here with a higher pixel density. The iPad Air 2 is coming equipped with an 8MP camera along with some "image optimisation" tools, and the Nexus 9 also features the same shooter. But HTCfs tablet is slightly better at taking selfies than the iPad Air 2, which has a FaceTime camera (1.2MP). The Nexus 9 features a 1.6MP front camera. But the front cameras on both the tablets should have been better.
  • Google Shows Off Nexus 6 Smartphone, Nexus 9 Tablet  -Google has announced Android 5.0 Lollipop and with it the first few devices to run the new operating system, the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9. The Nexus 6 is a large-screened smartphone made by Motorola. It has an aluminum frame and a 6-inch quad HD display with a 13-megapixel main camera. The camera includes optical image stabilization and HDR+ for improved low-light shots. The device has stereo-speakers with high-fidelity sound and comes with a turbo charger for fast charging. Google claims the device can get up to six hours of battery time after plugging it in for just 15 minutes. The Nexus 6 will be available for pre-order in late October and in stores in November. Google will sell an unlocked version through the Play Store, and the Nexus 6 will also be sold by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon Wireless. The device costs $649 at full retail, which is $200 more than the Nexus 5. The Nexus 9 tablet is made by HTC and features an 8.9-inch 2048 x 1536 screen with a brushed aluminum design. It is run by a dual-core Tegra K1 64-bit processor with each core clocked at 2.3GHz. Other features include an 8.0-/1.6-megapixel camera configuration; BoomSound speakers; dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, and LTE; and a 6,700mAh battery. The Nexus 9 will be available for pre-order on October 17 and in stores starting November 3. The Wi-Fi model starts at $399.
  • Google Names Android 5.0 Lollipop - Google has said the next version of Android, which it has so far referred to only as Release L, will be called Android 5.0 Lollipop. Google previewed Lollipop earlier this year and has offered it in beta form to developers for several months. It includes a refreshed look and feel that Google calls Material Design. Google has been slowly updating the core Android apps with Material Design over the last few weeks. In Lollipop, Google has re-envisioned the lock screen to incorporate more of the notifications, as well as the ability to automatically unlock the device when a trusted wearable is nearby. Lollipop will also offer a new keyboard design. Moving forward, Lollipop will rely on the ART runtime engine instead of Dalvik, which has served for several years. Google says ART offers a two-times improvement in app performance across the platform. ART is also more memory efficient, and is optimized 64-bit processing. The platform includes the Android Extension Pack to improve graphics performance. Google took time to improve the platform's efficiency, too. Project Volta, for example, took aim at helping OEMs and developers improve battery life by more optimizing their apps. Further, Lollipop adds its own Battery Saver tool to help extend the life of a battery when it reaches critical levels. Lollipop builds in more malware protection and ways for Android users to secure their device and make sure apps are scanned for safety. For example, Google is adding a kill switch to Lollipop, which allows device owners to remotely disable their handset if it is lost or stolen. Android 5.0 Lollipop will be available on the Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet when they debut later this year.
  • $65 Windows tablets show up in Hong Kong - There are cheap Windows tablets and then there are cheap Windows tablets and thanks to the HKTDC show in Hong Kong, we are now seeing devices that cost as little as $65. That price represents a new entry-level, well below the $81 price of the most affordable Windows 8.1 tablet previously announced - but what you get for that price is nothing short of bare-bones entry level equipment. So what does this low cost actually get you? You will get a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and an Intel Z3735G quad-core Bay Trail processor. The device is called the EM-i8170, and it is manufactured by Emdoor, which unveiled another low-cost Windows 8.1 device earlier this year - the $99 8-inch EM-i8080, which includes integrated 3G connectivity. The $65 price may represent the cost at which the manufacturer sells these devices to other companies, who then re-brand them under their own identity which means that we could see a sizeable markup on top of these prices before the tablets actually go on sale. If this is true, the price for consumers may well be on-par with other entry level tablets.
  • Apple Announces iPad Air 2, Mac Upgrades - Apple has unveiled the iPad 2 Air, along with upgrades to its operating system, Yosemite, and a high-resolution iMac.
  • Apple Debuts New Multi-Carrier SIM Card in iPad Air 2 - Apple has revealed the iPad Air 2, and along with it a new way to handle SIM cards. According to Apple, the new Apple SIM gives iPad Air 2 owners unprecedented flexibility when it comes to choosing an LTE service provider. "Whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you -- with no long-term commitment," explained Apple. "And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip." The multi-carrier SIM is compatible with AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the U.S., as well as EE in the U.K. The iPad Air 2 supports 20 different LTE bands, similar to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The carriers named by Apple have not yet discussed the particulars regarding no-contract data plans. There's no word on why Verizon Wireless isn't included in the list of U.S. carriers. It's possible that the Apple SIM will find its way to future Apple products, including its iPhones.
  • Apple Says iOS 8.1 Is About Stomping Out Bugs - Apple has revealed details about iOS 8.1, an update to its smartphone and tablet platform. iOS 8.1 targets numerous bugs that have caused issues for iPhone and iPad owners since its debut, such as connectivity and crashing. As far as new features, iOS 8.1 adds support for Apple Pay and includes the public beta of iCloud Photo Library for sharing photos. The update also brings back the camera roll within the photo application. Apple said iOS 8.1 will be available for download beginning Monday, October 20.  In addition, Apple has announced that Apple Pay will go live Monday, October 20. Apple Pay is Apple's NFC-based mobile payment service. The service hooks into iPhone owners' iTunes accounts and the associated credit cards. Apple Pay will also (eventually) work with cards issued by more than 500 banks across 220,000 locations operated by dozens of retailers. Apple Pay is limited to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus due to their embedded NFC radios. Apple Pay also works on the web, and can be used to make purchases from select online services.
  • Apple unveils updated Mac mini starting at $499 - Apple has finally got around to upgrading their popular Mac mini. The new Mac mini now starts off at just $499 for a basic 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz) with 3MB on-chip shared L3 cache model with 4GB of memory and goes up to a $999 version which ships with a 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 and includes a 1TB fusion drive and 8GB of memory. The basic model also comes with Intel HD Graphics 5000, while the mid-range and top end Mac mini ship with Intel's Iris Graphics for better performance. All versions of the Mac mini now come with 802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless networking, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, four USB 3 ports, HDMI and a SDXC card slot. Apple also called it the "World's most energy efficient desktop", though until we get hold of one, we will take this with a grain of salt.

  • Skype Debuts Qik Video Messaging App - Skype has announced a new video messaging app called Qik. The service, explains Skype, is to give smartphone users a fun way to interact with others and maintain conversations that have more personality than standard text messages or video calls. Qik users can record and send up to 42 seconds of video to recipients who can then respond with video messages of their own. Skype says videos remain live for just two weeks, and can be erased by the creator at any time. Qik also lets users prerecord five-second Qik Fliks, which Qik describes as canned video responses to use when there's no time to record a new video. Qik used to exist as a stand-alone messaging service, but was purchased by Skype in 2011 and later shuttered entirely. Skype Qik is available to Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. The app is free to download from each platform's respective app store.
  • Russian hackers use zero-day Windows exploit to spy on NATO, EU, US - Russian hackers have been using a zero-day exploit in Windows to spy on numerous high-ranking agencies across the EU and the world. Among those affected we have NATO, several Western governments, EU energy and telecommunications companies and even an undisclosed US academic organizations. This report, cited by the New York Times, comes from a cybersecurity company named iSight. As such all caveats, pinches of salt and regular skepticism in the face of dire warnings should apply. iSight reports that a number of hackers have found and started exploiting a zero day vulnerability found in Windows. According to them, while the hacking group with probable ties to the Russian government has been active for years, this specific vulnerability in Microsoft's OS has only been exploited in the last couple of months. Apparently the exploit is present in all supported versions of Windows starting with Vista an ending with Windows 8.1. It's probably in Windows 10 Technical Preview as well but that version isn't officially supported just yet.
  • YouTube has potentially infected over 100,000 users - According to Trend Micro, they have been monitoring the activity on YouTube over the past couple of months and have found that the attack comes in the form of ads that are present on the site. While the ads themselves have no malicious content, the issue seems to occur when the ad is clicked. Although these ads should be monitored and screened by YouTube, some have seemed to slip through the cracks, redirecting to malicious websites that could cause infections. While this all sounds fairly simple, the actually process for passing off a malicious site for something legitimate is fairly complex. The exploit kit seems to target Java, Internet Explorer, and Flash. Luckily, those that keep their OS up to date will not be exposed to this infection as Microsoft has patched the vulnerability in May of 2013. It's also probably a good idea to make sure that you update your Adobe and Java products to their latest available editions. It is unknown how long these ads will remain on YouTube, but their team will hopefully have the issue patched soon.
  • New Breed of ATM Hack Emerges - Rather than poke around and drain individual accounts, Kaspersky Labs discovered that hackers have gone straight to the source and just drain the cash directly from the main account of the ATM. Saves time and time is money, especially for thieves.
  • AT&T Improves International Plans - AT&T has rolled out new service plans for use when traveling abroad. Under the new AT&T Passport plans, customers pay a one-time monthly fee for 30 days of access to international voice minutes, messaging, and data. The plans automatically expire. Each includes unlimited messaging and unlimited access to AT&T's Wi-Fi hotspots. The least expensive option costs $30 and includes 120MB of data and $1-per-minute voice calls. The $60 option improves the data allotment to 300MB and drops the per-minute cost of voice calls to $0.50. The $120 option boosts data to 800MB and drops the per-minute cost of voice calls to $0.35. Before today, AT&T required customers to select separate voice, messaging, and data plans when traveling abroad. The new plans combine all three services in a less-expensive package. AT&T said its month-to-month AT&T Global rates are still available to those who travel frequently and need access beyond 30 days. Data-only Passport and Global packages are also available for tablets, laptops, and other data-only devices.
  • Americans shocked their govt owns Ebola patent - For IN the NOW with Anissa Naouai, The Resident hit the streets of New York City to ask people whether or not they were scared that a known case of Ebola has just been found in Texas. She challenges people on their knowledge of the virus, only to find out that not many Americans know their government has the patent on Ebola, or that it has been sitting on several promising vaccines because no company or government wants to pay for the final stages of FDA approval, remaining clinical trials, and manufacturing of the vaccine. Now that Ebola has reached the states, perhaps people will start paying more attention.

  • Citizenfour Official Trailer 1 (2014) - Edward Snowden Documentary - HBO, Radius-TWC & Participant Media have premiered a trailer for Laura Poitras & journalist Glenn Greenwald's documentary Citizenfour. Described as an "utterly riveting first-person look" at how they "first met with whistleblower Edward Snowden in Hong Kong", the doc is a highly anticipated expose on Snowden's decisions and implications, captured as an "unprecedented fly-on-the-wall account of one of the most groundbreaking moments in recent history." The trailer is more of a tease with a grating slow-read voiceover to start, and right when it gets to the interesting part with Snowden it cuts to the title. I'm definitely seeing this doc, but I wish they gave us a bit more to view here. That said, this may still capture your attention!

HBO Without Cable, Coming In 2015 - tech
(hx) 11:30 PM CEST - Oct,15 2014 - Post a comment
In 2015 a standalone, over-the-top HBO Go service will launch in the the U.S, HBO Chairman and CEO Richard Plepler just confirmed, in a move that had been in the wind for some time. HBO launched its existing streaming service, HBO Go, in February 2010. HBO Go is available on computers, smartphones, tablets, game consoles and other connected devices, but access to it requires authentication with login information from a pay-TV customer who already subscribes to HBO. During his talk, Plepler noted that about 10 million households in the U.S. only pay for broadband internet and not cable TV. It's possible that many of them would like to pay for HBO by itself, rather than having to subscribe to cable (or mooch off someone else who does). Streaming video services such as Netflix and Amazon Instant Video have built up massive subscriber bases in recent years with plans that cost less than $10 a month. HBO could follow a model similar to World Wrestling Entertainment, which launched the WWE Network earlier this year. For $9.99 per month, the WWE Network gives subscribers on-demand access to thousands of hours of archive programming and all monthly pay-per-view events.

TechNews - Holograms & 3D Porn: Expert Predictions - tech
(hx) 10:15 PM CEST - Oct,11 2014 - Post a comment / read (18)
  • Holograms and 3D porn: Expert predictions for a gigabit Internet - "Vivid" telepresence - holograms, immersive gaming, new collaboration services and even 3D pornography - could be the next big thing as gigabit-per-second broadband service spreads across the U.S. Enhanced telepresence and detailed virtual worlds were two of the main themes that emerged when the Pew Research Center asked more than 1,400 Internet experts and prognosticators about the possible benefits of a widely available gigabit Internet. Survey results were released Thursday. The most common theme in the nonscientific survey is that "this level of bandwidth and connectivity will change basic human interactions," said Lee Rainie, Pew's director of Internet, science and technology research. "It'll change the idea of being together, what community can be."
  • Windows 10's very different way of updating - It looks like Microsoft's next OS will bring with it a different way of updating as well. What do you think of the change?
  • Windows 10 Technical Preview Using Real-Time Keylogger? - If you have installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview, you also gave permission to Microsoft to collect data of your usage and report that back to Microsoft as feedback to improve the product. Closer examination of the code shows that you could be sending data in real time as you type.
  • Windows 10: 'Aero Glass' theme coming soon via simple mod - If you are still using Windows 7, there is a good chance that you are using 'Aero Glass'. The theme has been widely popular among enthusiasts over the years, and if you are running Windows 10, you will soon have the option to turn this theme back on. The chaps over at Glass8.eu are working diligently to release the tools needed to enable the theme. While their website makes it seem like the release of the files needed to enable the theme are not going to be available anytime soon, a post by the creator on MDL states that because there are "no large changes in Win10's DWM, you can expect Aero Glass for Win10 earlier than" previously expected. Like many modifications to Windows, you will need the UXStyle Themepatch to enable the feature but seeing that files have not been released yet, there is not much you can do at this time. Once the theme is available, we will write up a tutorial about how to enable 'Aero Glass' on Windows 10. And when the theme is ready for everyone to use, it will be "100% same as in Win7", according to those who are making it.
  • Adobe Illustrator on the Surface Pro 3 redefines content creation - Adobe showed off what is possible when you combine the Surface with Adobe's latest CC experience with Illustrator. While we could explain it all here, the video above shows what happens when you put down the mouse and utilize other styles of input. The video is quite impressive in showing how the Pro 3 is truly a digital canvas and not simply a screen that uses a pen for input. With the ability to smudge lines with your finger and even flick paint onto a canvas from a Windows Phone, this is cross-device collaboration at its best.
  • Firefox is planning a 64-bit browser - Firefox is today available only in a 32-bit version. With both Chrome and Internet Explorer offering 64-bit versions, Mozilla seems to have fallen behind in the browser race. Until now, that is. The company has just announced on MozillaWiki, that they are planning to release a 64-bit version next year for Windows. This is apparently after several years of experimenting with 64-bit software. The Mozilla blog also states that they are implementing a 64-bit version, partially in case Microsoft decides to retire 32-bit in the release of Windows 10. Another focus is to stay relevant in the browser based gaming industry.
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Bend Test - You might have heard about the bending problem with the Apple iPhone 6 Plus. Samsung also knows about it. And the South Korean company appears to be wasting no time to show off that their own big device, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, is non-bendable

  • Nokia HERE Maps Now Available to Samsung Galaxy Phones - Nokia recently announced that its HERE Maps product is now available to Samsung's Galaxy smartphones. HERE Maps allows users to download entire countries or regions, which makes the maps available even when the device is offline. Downloaded maps perform faster when panning and zooming since new segments don't need to be loaded from an internet connection. HERE Maps for Galaxy devices include free, voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions. Users can plan routes via car, public transport, or foot. Live traffic updates and real-time transit schedules require a data connection. Nokia says maps are available for about 200 countries with turn-by-turn directions available in about 100. Transit maps are available in 750 metro areas across 40 different countries, with more being added all the time. HERE Maps can be found in the Samsung Galaxy Apps Store directly on handsets and is being offered first in beta form. It requires 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1 and up.

Both $35 options include unlimited messaging. Can't imagine how fast that is? You just have to think about the fastest car in the world, which traveled at 435.5 km/h in a NASA facility back in February

They hope to receive approval from the US Food and Drug Administration and to move to human testing within five years.  The penises would be grown using a patient's own cells to avoid the high risk of immunological rejection after organ transplantation from another individual.

Final Fantasy XIII for PC - Upscale to 1080p - tech
(hx) 12:20 AM CEST - Oct,10 2014 - Post a comment / read (2)
The PC version of Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII was released today on Steam and early reports show the game does not offer much in the way of configuration options. I've installed the game today and found that configurable options are limited to basic elements like difficulty, subtitles, and camera :-o On top of that, Final Fantasy XIII for PC appears to be locked at a maximum resolution of 720p. Fortunately, modder Durante (the guy who basically fixed the PC version of Dark Souls) has already released a plugin that brings the game's resolution up to 1080p.

  • Verizon Bags Plan to Throttle Heaviest Users - Verizon Wireless today said it will not move forward with a "network optimization" plan that would have throttled the mobile data speeds of its heaviest users. Verizon announced its intent to slow down the speeds of grandfathered-in unlimited data customers based on monthly usage and local cell-site conditions, but met with resistance from both the government and customers. The company has apparently had a change of heart. "Verizon is committed to providing its customers with an unparalleled mobile network experience," said the company in a statement. "At a time of ever-increasing mobile broadband data usage, we not only take pride in the way we manage our network resources, but also take seriously our responsibility to deliver exceptional mobile service to every customer. We've greatly valued the ongoing dialogue over the past several months concerning network optimization and we've decided not to move forward with the planned implementation of network optimization for 4G LTE customers on unlimited plans. Exceptional network service will always be our priority and we remain committed to working closely with industry stakeholders to manage broadband issues so that American consumers get the world-class mobile service they expect and value." Earlier today, Verizon Wireless boosted its highest data plan allowance from 50GB per month to 100GB per month, a sign that the company's network isn't hitting the capacity constraints it earlier implied were the reason behind the plan to throttle customers.

Customers have to visit Sprint stores or call in to customer support by October 31 to receive the new data packages. Additionally, Sprint is waiving the access charge for handsets, tablets, and mobile broadband devices on 20GB or higher data allowances for customers who switch their number to Sprint. The upgrade works with plans that include between two and 10 lines and already subscribe to a minimum of 15GB ($160 per month). The promotion, which is available to new and existing customers, runs between today and October 31. AT&T said the promotional data allotments will not expire, and customers can keep them as long as they subscribe to a Mobile Share Value plan.
  • GoPro unveils the HERO4, 4K demo video looks superb - After months of speculation, GoPro has finally unveiled its next generation of HERO devices, the HERO4s. In this iteration, the HERO4 Black takes HD video recording and bumps up the resolution to 4K. But, that's not all the improvements that the HERO4 Black offers. The new HERO4s will offer two times the processing power of its predecessors. This will give the new HERO4 Black the capability to record 4K at 30fps, 2.7K video at 50fps, and 1080p at 120fps. These settings will allow video capture that will virtually eliminate the rolling shutter effect and allow for slow motion video effects. The HERO4 Black will also have improved audio performance by capturing high fidelity audio that will have two times the dynamic range of previous models.

Microsoft has just announced that the preview build for Windows 10 is now available, and that the final version of its new OS will come with DirectX 12. Microsoft has not confirmed yet whether this new API will be exclusive to its new OS, or whether it will also support Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1.
As a part of the Windows team, we're super excited about the Windows 10 Technical Preview that was just released! The final version of Windows 10 will ship with DirectX 12, and we think it's going to be awesome.

We especially encourage gamers to help us make this release great for you by becoming Windows Insiders. Game developers who are part of our DirectX 12 Early Access program have even more incentive to join the Windows Insider program. These game developers will receive everything they need to kickstart their DX12 development, including: updated runtime, API headers, drivers, documentation, and samples, all of which will work with the Windows 10 Technical Preview.

Windows 10 Technical Preview - DOWNLOAD - tech
(hx) 08:46 PM CEST - Oct,01 2014 - Post a comment / read (6)
As promised, Microsoft has released the Windows 10 Technical Preview and you can download it now! The OS, which is designed to give you a small flavor of what will be included in the final release of Windows 10, is still an early build. The build number for this release of the OS is 9841 (despite the fact that later builds are currently floating around inside the walls of Microsoft). As with any non-commercial release, you should not install this OS on production hardware as there could be bugs that make some software not work as intended. If you have the ability, installing this OS inside a virtual machine is the safest option and if you can't do that, I suggest you designate an older machine as a testing device and install Windows 10 on it.

As with earlier OS previews, this one won't live on forever, of course. In Microsoft's release notes, it states that the 'Technical Preview expires on April 15, 2015. If you're running Technical Preview, we'll send you notifications beginning on April 1, 2015 to remind you that it's time to upgrade your PC to a newer version.'

Microsoft Announces Windows 10 - tech
(hx) 08:39 PM CEST - Sep,30 2014 - Post a comment / read (5)
Microsoft announced today that its new OS will be called Windows 10 - and not Windows 9, as had been widely expected. The company also unveiled its new Windows Insider Program, and confirmed that the new OS will be available for early adopters and its "most enthusiastic" users to download tomorrow. But when will the OS actually begin rolling out to customers? Microsoft isn't yet committing to a firm date, but has said that it plans to release the full version of Windows 10 around the middle of next year.

In a video uploaded to YouTube and shared on Microsoft's official Windows blog, Joe Belfiore, leader of the Windows product definition and design team, guides the main changes people can expect in the preview. Some of the biggest changes include the task view and snap assist features revealed today. Additionally, the preview will feature the return of the Start menu to Windows, a feature heavily requested by users.

So, if you had a lazy IT administration, your school may never have qualified for the free software. But Microsoft is making a change today that will fix this shortcoming. Starting today, they are moving to a self-serve model for students as long as you enter a valid, school-provided email address.
  • Microsoft Offering 30GB of OneDrive Storage for Free - Microsoft has launched a limited promotion that will double OneDrive users' free storage to 30GB. Microsoft already offers 15GB of online storage for free. Those who sign into their OneDrive accounts between now and the end of September will see their free storage jump to 30GB. The offer is good for all users of OneDrive, including people using Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and Windows Phone devices. Microsoft also offers incremental amounts of additional storage (usually 3GB) when smartphone/tablet owners choose to backup their camera roll to OneDrive. Users who already have more than 30GB of free OneDrive storage will receive the additional 15GB of storage, too.
  • Microsoft announces its Chromecast competitor for $60 - Microsoft has announced a new peripheral : the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter. Boring name aside, the device is a lot like a Chromecast and easily allows you to turn nearly any display into a second screen. The device will cost around $60 when it becomes available in October and we can see how corporations will likely move towards these devices. If an enterprise has a fleet of Miracast-enabled devices, these dongles are much cheaper than a projector since most conference rooms these days have LCDs up on the wall. Or, even if they have projectors, these devices can be used to easily connect wirelessly to them and reduce the hassle of using cords. You can check out the video in this post to get a better idea how the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter works but if you are familiar with a Chromecast, the idea is very similar - although Google's iteration does cost about half the price of Microsoft's device.

The work-around restores cellular connectivity, which had been broken by the yanked iOS 8.0.1 update. It involves downloading the .ipsw file from Apple and using it in conjunction with iTunes on a computer to install a clean version of iOS 8. Apple also noted that it is preparing iOS 8.0.2, which will also resolve the cellular issue as well as resolve the bugs iOS 8.0.1 was meant to fix.
  • Apple Releases iOS 8.0.2 to Resolve iPhone Issues - Apple today made available iOS 8.0.2, an update that Apple says fixes an issue in iOS 8.0.1 that impacted cellular network connectivity and Touch ID on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. In addition to resolving the cellular connectivity issue, the update also repairs a number of other issues. For example, it fixes a bug so HealthKit apps can now be made available in the App Store. It also: addresses an issue where third party keyboards could become deselected when a user enters their passcode; fixes an issue that prevented some apps from accessing photos from the Photo Library; improves the reliability of the Reachability feature on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus; fixes an issue that could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS/MMS messages; fixes an issue where ringtones were sometimes not restored from iCloud backups; and fixes a bug that prevented uploading photos and videos from Safari. iOS 8.0.2 is free to download and install over the air, or via iTunes.
  • Bent iPhones Have Some Competition - CONAN Highlight: Is your new Apple device not quite ramrod-straight? Try a rock-hard Samsung gadget instead. LOL
  • Apple iPhone 6 production costs start at $200 - The new iPhones are huge, their latest high-profile commercials made that pretty clear, and in every single way, they're better than the uber-hyped but somewhat underwhelming predecessors. The A8 chips are faster, the profiles are slimmer, security, health tracking, camera capabilities, everything's improved. It seems only logical therefore for Cupertino to charge a premium, especially as far as the "huge" 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus is concerned. Clearly, they're now spending more money on various components, starting with the always costly displays. Or are they? Are they really? Not according to IHS. Don't get us wrong, the so-called bill of materials is pricier for the 6 Plus. Just not so pricey to warrant the $100 gap between it and last year's 5s or the 2014 standard iPhone 6.  It's apparently costing Apple an extra $16 to produce the 6 Plus, parts and labor included, bringing the grand total to merely $216. That's for the variant packing 16 GB of internal storage space, which Apple sells at $749. Meanwhile, the highest-end model, equipped with 128 GB memory, has a BOM worth exactly $263 and a recommended retail price tag of $949. Anyone want to take the time to gauge the exact profit margins?

  • BlackBerry Shows Off the Passport for Mobile Pros - BlackBerry today fully revealed the Passport, its first smartphone to debut since February. The Passport has a unique shape, providing a large, square screen with a full, physical QWERTY keyboard below. The phone has a steel frame that BlackBerry claims lends it great strength. The screen measures 4.5 inches across the diagonal and has 1,440 x 1,440 pixels. BlackBerry says the square aspect ratio helps fit more content across the screen when compared to 16:9 displays. The company took special care to develop the keyboard, which it claims is faster and more reliable than software keyboards. The keyboard is touch-enabled and lets users brush their fingers over the keys to scroll through information on the screen. Users can also flick up on the keyboard to use next-word suggestions, and swipe from right to left on the keyboard to delete the full last word. Under the hood, the Passport has a 2.2GHz Snapdragon processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It supports microSD memory cards and has a 3,450mAh battery. The phone comes with a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization. The device runs BlackBerry OS 10.3 with support the Amazon App Store for applications. Alongside the Passport, BlackBerry also introduced BlackBerry Assistant, a voice-activated tool similar to Siri, Google Now, and Cortana that can perform select actions on the Passport. BlackBerry claims Assistant is more powerful than rivals because it can access information behind corporate firewalls. BlackBerry is selling the Passport directly to U.S. consumers from its web site. The phone costs $599 and is being sold without a contract. It is compatible with HSPA/LTE networks, such as those operated by AT&T and T-Mobile
  • BlackBerry Passport Goes On Sale Weds. for $599 - BlackBerry CEO John S. Chen confirmed it will begin to sell the Passport smartphone on Wednesday. It also features a large antenna to aid reception and boasts 36 hours of continuous use. The phone, the first BlackBerry has released in a year, will run BlackBerry OS 10.3. It will be available in Toronto, London, and Dubai on Wednesday, and "a lot of places will have it" within two weeks. Chen didn't specify when it will go on sale in the U.S., but it will be sold directly to consumers, unsubsidized for $599.

  • MS has announced a Windows 9 event for Sep 30th in San Francisco -  Microsoft has announced a press event for September 30th in San Francisco to talk about the next version of Windows. While the invite does not specifically call out Windows 9, it is fully believed that the company will be announcing its new operating system at this event. Currently referred to internally by the codename Windows Threshold, many, including ourselves, believe that Microsoft will call the project Windows 9. A focus of the event will be about the enterprise too, which is not a surprise, considering the lack of enthusiasm from large corporations to deploy Windows 8. Look for Microsoft to talk directly to these partners about Windows 9 and how the specifically listened to enterprise feedback to build this version of Windows.

  • Swype, SwiftKey, Others Available to iOS for First Time - Apple released iOS8 and with the updated operating system comes a new feature many will surely relish: support for third-party keyboards. Though Apple took care to revise its own keyboard application, iOS devices can now install and use keyboard apps made by other companies. Some of the first to leave the gate are Swype and SwiftKey, two keyboards that are well known to Android device owners. Swype is available for $0.99 and the SwiftKey Keyboard is available for free. Swype includes several themes, supports a handful of languages, and supports personal dictionaries. iPhone owners can easily switch between the stock keyboard and Swype for easier typing. Swype works on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. SwiftKey offers a similar feature set, including word predictions, enhanced autocorrect, and cloud-based learning for a more personal experience across devices. SwiftKey's one limitation is that the Flow (tracing) keyboard only works with the iPhone and iPod, but not the iPad. Flesky and Minuum are two other such apps.
  • Apple iPhone 6 And 6 Plus Drop Test - This drop test ends with both the iPhones having shattered screens. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus survive when they are dropped on their backs. In apparently shocking news to the folks from Cupertino, not every single person in the world is a fan of the Irish rock band. Many were upset when the album suddenly appeared in their iTunes library, and, depending on a user's settings, sometimes downloaded itself onto mobile devices. There is a way to hide albums from view in iTunes, but if you just can't live with Songs of Innocence being tied to your account, Apple has pushed out a tool to eradicate it from your account forever. Go to this webpage, click remove album, enter your account info and poof -- it's gone, although you may still need to delete any downloaded copies. We hope next time Apple will ask before shoving a new LP into our libraries -- unless it's Detox. CONAN Highlight: If you don't like the new album from the Irish rockers, Apple can show you how to delete it. But maybe that's just not extreme enough for you...

Nvidia's GeForce GTX 980/970 graphics cards tested - tech
(hx) 09:32 PM CEST - Sep,20 2014 - Post a comment
Starting at a way more reasonable $549, the GTX 980 also only has 5.2 billion transistors-far fewer than the 7.1 billion you'd find in a current-gen GTX 780 Ti or GTX Titan-and its 2048 CUDA cores and 256-bit memory interface wouldn't seem to stack up well against the 2880 cores and 384-bit bus you'd find in the company's former 780 Ti flagship. Indeed, it doesn't have quite the same texture fill rate and there's a good bit less memory bandwidth. But the new Maxwell-based GPU inside this card is clocked at a practically unheard-of 1126 MHz (compare to 875MHz), the card has 4GB of GDDR5 memory (up from 3GB), and most impressively the entire kit runs at just 165 watts TDP. Only!
HotHardware: The 4GB of video memory on both cards is clocked at a blisteringly-fast 7GHz (effective GDDR5 data rate) and the memory links to the GPU via a wide 256-bit interface. At those clocks, the GeForce GTX 980 offers up a peak textured fillrate of 144.1 GTexels/s and 224 GB/s of memory bandwidth; the GTX 970 offers a peak textured fillrate of 109.2 GTexels/s and the same amount of memory bandwidth. Those numbers might seem low in light of the GeForce GTX 780 Ti's 384-bit memory interface, 210 GTexels/s and 336 GB/s of memory bandwidth, but stick with us here-we'll have more to share on the next couple of pages. Like the high-end cards in the GeForce GTX 700 series, the new GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 reference cards are outfitted with heavy-duty coolers and frames made of aluminum to add rigidity. The GTX 980 also has an aluminum back-plate, which aids in cooling. And what's interesting about it is that there's a removable panel that allows for better air-flow between cards, should a system be packing multiple cards, close together. NVIDIA claims they've done some testing in this regard, and removing that portion of the back-plate is all that's necessary to improve air-flow into an adjacent card's fan. The GeForce logo along the top edge of the cards also light up and there are embossed badges at the front of the fan shroud with the cards' model number. For the most part, the GeForce GTX 980 and 970 reference cards, look very much like the 700 series.

TechSpot: Nvidia says Maxwell brings 2x the performance per watt over the previous generation. For example, the GTX 980 has 33% more cores that also operate at a higher frequency than the GTX 680, yet the newer card's TDP rating is 30 watts lower. Nvidia says that the GTX 980's GM204 GPU is so efficient due to rebalancing the design to fully utilize the CUDA cores more often. Additionally, they have increased the cache size to 2MB, which is four times larger than the 512KB cache found inside the GK104 used by GPUs such as the GTX 680 and GTX 770. The larger cache means fewer requests to the GPU DRAM are needed, improving performance and reducing the GPUs power consumption. Speaking of DRAM, the GM204 features a new compression engine which is designed to further reduce the bandwidth demands.

TechReport: By either measure, the GeForce GTX 980 is the fastest single-GPU graphics card we tested. With the possible exception of the pricey Titan Black, it's also the fastest single-GPU graphics card on the planet. Although $549 is a lot to pay, the GTX 980 manages to deliver appreciably better value than the GeForce GTX 780 Ti, which it replaces. The new GeForce flagship outperforms AMD's Radeon R9 290X, as well. If you want the best, the GTX 980 is the card to get. That's an assessment based on price and performance, but we know from the preceding pages that the GTX 980's other attributes are positive, too. The GM204 GPU's power efficiency is unmatched among high-end GPUs. With Nvidia's stock cooler, that translates into lower noise levels under load than any older GeForce or current Radeon in this class. I'm also quite happy with the suite of extras Nvidia has built into the Maxwell GPU, such as DSR for improved image quality and a big ROP count for high performance at 4K resolutions. This graphics architecture takes us a full generation beyond Kepler-and thus beyond what's in current game consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbone.

TechPowerUp: In terms of pure performance, we find the GeForce GTX 980 exceeding the GeForce GTX 780 Ti by 7%, which doesn't look huge, but consider that the GM204 has nearly 2 billion fewer transistors and about a 50% lower TDP, and something tells us that the GM204 won't be the biggest chip NVIDIA will design on this architecture. Compared to AMD's Radeon R9 290X, we see a large performance gap of up to 20% at 1920x1080, although it shrinks to 10% at higher resolutions. This makes the GTX 980 an excellent choice for beyond-HD gaming, but you should still have two cards running in SLI for 4K. When looking at performance, you also have to consider power consumption. Nowadays, power consumption is the limiting factor for GPU performance because heat and noise follow power consumption, and you can only cool so much heat in a graphics card while keeping it as quiet as possible. We got a first glimpse of Maxwell's superior energy efficiency with the GTX 750 Ti it debuted with, and NVIDIA has successfully managed to bring those improvements to their high-end product. The GTX 980 only uses 156 W on average in our power consumption tests, which is incredibly low for a card of this performance class. AMD's recently released "Tonga" GPU, based on their latest technology, sips 50 W more for only roughly half the performance. Unlike AMD, NVIDIA has also improved non-gaming power consumption of their board, which will be important to productivity users who run their PC all day long. NVIDIA was also able to reduce noise levels of their card considerably because of these power consumption improvements, making gaming on it a quiet experience. With 34 dBA, the card is very quiet for its performance class, but I still see some headroom to reduce noise, which board partners will certainly capitalize on.

PCPerspective: The performance of the GeForce GTX 980 is impressive, but doesn't quite mix-up the high end market as some people might have thought it would a year or so ago. My experiences gaming with the GTX 980 proved it was the best single GPU graphics card you can get today; better than the GTX 780 Ti, better than the Titan Black, and better than the Radeon R9 290X. Benchmarks and real-world game play proved that to be true: the GTX 980 was as much as 15% faster than the R9 290X and was only beaten by the AMD flagship card in one of our six games. The GTX 780 Ti falls into the same path as the R9 290X - faster in only a single competition (Skyrim) against the newest member of the GeForce family. The GTX 970 might be a better overall package if you include pricing, but it's performance is also worth noting again. For just $329 it is able to outperform AMD's Radeon R9 290 and the GeForce GTX 780. And again, that advantage is up to 15%, and comes in a dead heat in a couple of cases. What makes these wins for the GTX 980 and GTX 970 so impressive is not the scale or ratio by which they outperform the R9 290X or GTX 780 Ti, but that it is being done on fairly modestly pressed silicon. Keep in mind that the GTX 780 Ti has 2880 CUDA cores, while the GTX 980 has 2048. The GTX 780 Ti has a 384-bit memory bus, the GTX 980 a 256-bit bus. The GTX 780 Ti has a 250 watt TDP, the GTX 980 only 165 watts. The GTX 780 Ti launched for $699 last November, the GTX 980 launches at $549.

GTX 970/980 Specs And Benchmarks Leaked? - tech
(hx) 12:41 AM CEST - Sep,16 2014 - Post a comment
This forum thread has a bunch of "leaked" GTX 970/980 specs, and even a 3DMark score thrown in for good measure. Hit the link for all the info. Here's the 3DMark score to pique your interest:

NVIDIA's next-generation flagship single-GPU graphics card, the GeForce GTX 980, will feature 2,048 CUDA cores, and not the previously thought of 1,920. These 2,048 will be spread across 16 Streaming Multiprocessor Maxwell (SMM) units. Its sibling, the GeForce GTX 970, in comparison, features 1,664 cores spread across 13 SMMs. The TDP of GTX 980 is rated at just around 175W, and that of the GTX 970 at 145W. In comparison, the GK104 silicon, on the GeForce GTX 770, is rated at 230W. The kicker? Both GM204 and GK104 are based on the same 28 nm silicon fab node. Both cards feature power inputs consisting of two 6-pin PCIe power connectors. NVIDIA is expected to launch the two, on the 19th of September, 2014.

  • Corsair AX1500i Power Supply Review - When it comes to performance, the Corsair AX1500i is almost frightening. Starting with the efficiency, as the 80 Plus Titanium certification is one of the primary selling points of this product, the AX1500i has a higher average efficiency than the top efficiency many 80 Plus Platinum units can achieve. It also has exceptionally high efficiency at low loads, which is very useful for a unit of this output, as the power requirements of even the most power hungry systems while idling are just a few percent of this unit's capacity. The quality of the output is also breathtaking, with very low voltage ripple even under massive loads and unparalleled regulation.
  • Stephen Colbert Is Really Pumped About The Apple Watch - Even Colbert was whipped into ecstasy over news of Apple's smartwatch. So much so, in fact, that he went ahead and made his own.

The $45 Smart Plan will offer 3 GB, up from 2.5 GB, and the $55 Pro Plan includes 10 GB instead of 5 GB. (Plans cost an extra $5/month without Auto Pay.) Existing customers on these plans will automatically be upgraded to the larger data allotments. Once a customer uses up the high-speed data allotment, data is throttled to 128 Kbps. The offer is for a limited time, but customers taking advantage will be able keep the larger data allotment after the offer expires.

  • Hangouts Gains Free Voice Calls - Google has updated its Hangouts service with the ability to make free voice calls from Android and iOS devices, as well as from the web. Hangouts users can call one another and regular numbers in the U.S. and Canada without incurring any costs. Google says calls to other countries will require fees, but its rates are low. Google plans to make Hangouts version 2.3 available to Android devices over the next few days, and users wishing to make calls will need to install an additional dialer. The feature will show up automatically in the iOS and web versions of Hangouts. Hangouts users are already able to use the app to send IM and SMS messages, as well as make video calls.

Apple announces the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus - tech
(hx) 09:24 PM CEST - Sep,09 2014 - Post a comment / read (4)
Apple today revealed new iPhones during a special event held in California. The new devices have curved designs, a protruding camera module, and Apple's signature metal design. The phones have a glass front, aluminum frame, and a steel Apple logo on the back. The iPhones have Retina HD displays that measure 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches, respectively. The smaller screen has 1334 x 750 pixels and the larger one has 1920 x 1080 pixels. The iPhone 6 measures 6.9mm thick, the 6 Plus measures 7.1mm - both are thinner than the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 6 Plus offers a wide array of landscape-optimized apps, such as a two-panel view in messaging, along with a wider keyboard. A double-press of the home button will move the UI elements normally positioned at the top of the screen down so they are easier to reach with one hand. Apple said content designed for the different iOS screen sizes and resolutions will now scale up to match whichever device is being used. The phones feature a 64-bit A8 processor that uses a 20nm processes that Apple says is 20% faster than the iPhone 5s' A7 chip, and provides a 50% bump in graphics performance. The iPhones also use Apple's M8 Motion coprocessor to help manage sensors for fitness apps. The sensors are able to differentiate between cycling and walking, and can calculate speed and elevation changes. The new handsets feature 20-band support for LTE networks, and include carrier aggregation, VoLTE capabilities, and Wi-Fi calling (from select carriers). The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus both feature an 8-megapixel camera with an aperture of f/2.2 and what Apple calls True Tone flash. The cameras can shoot panoramas up to 43-megapixels. Thanks to a new image signal processor, the cameras are faster to focus, and faster to detect faces/blinking. The 6 uses digital processing for image stabilization, but the 6 Plus uses optical image stabilization. The cameras can shoot 1080p HD vide at 30/60fps, as well as slow-motion video at 120/240fps. The user-facing camera, which Apple calls FaceTime, has an all-new sensor that is faster at detecting faces, allows in 81% more light than the 5s, and can capture selfies in rapid-fire bursts. The iPhone 6 will cost $199, $299, or $399 for the 16-GB, 64-GB, and 129-GB models, respectively. The iPhone 6 Plus costs $299, $399, and $499 for the 16-GB, 64-GB, and 128-GB models, respectively. Those prices are available only with two-year contracts. Both iPhones go on sale September 19, with preorders beginning September 12. The iPhone 5s will remain available for $99, the 8GB iPhone 5c will be available for free.

Update: The new iPhone 6, in 3D!
Nvidia GTX 980/970 - 3DMark Scores Leaked - tech
(hx) 12:22 AM CEST - Sep,09 2014 - Post a comment / read (5)
VideoCardz has leaked the first 3DMark scores for Nvidia GTX 980/970, Nvidia's upcoming GPUs. In case you've not been following this latest generation of Nvidia's GPUs, the company has decided to skip the 8xx GPU series for the PC. Therefore, the team will re-brand those cards and will release them under the 9xx brand, and the new GPUs from Nvidia will be basically GTX980 and GTX970. As you can see, the performance difference between Nvidia's GTX980 and GTX780Ti is pretty small. In fact, some could say that these are disappointing results. Still, if these cards are priced at around $499 (? rumored), then I can safely say that there will be a market for them.

TechNews - Dell debuts 27-inch 5K panel - tech

  • GeForce GTX 980 starts listing in pricewatch engines - I just performed a search on GeForce GTX 980 at geizhals.at, an EU based price-watch engine. It started listing a GeForce GTX 980 entry. Few details are listed however there are some very interesting specs listed. it confirmes that the card has 4GB graphics memory on a 256-bit bus. But here's more interesting info, the entry also lists the number of Shader processors at 2560 with 160 TMUs (texture memory units) and 64 ROPs.
  • Dell kicks your puny 4K monitor to the curb, debuts 27-inch 5K panel - A recent Dell press event saw the computer manufacturer debut a number of new laptop and desktop models, but tucked into its product list came one particular stunner: a 27-inch monitor sporting a 5120*2880 resolution. The Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor, set to launch by the end of Q4 2014 for $2,499, will scream past the consumer-grade competition with a whopping 14.7 million pixels in all. That's over 70 percent bigger than the standard 4K spec of 3840*2160.
  • MSI Intros New Gaming Laptop And Dock For Discrete GPU - MSI introduced the GS30 Shadow, the company's newest gaming notebook that packs the latest fourth generation Core i7 processor and a 13.3-inch screen. MSI also introduced a "GamingDock" built for the GS30 Shadow that houses a discrete graphics card. This dock will be released in January 2015, and the laptop is expected to launch in the USA sometime before that. The laptop include the previously mentioned 13.3-inch anti-glare screen, which has a 2560 x 1440 resolution. There's the Core i7 processor with Iris Pro graphics (MSI didn't specify the model number), up to 16 GB of DDR3L memory (up to 1600 MHz), two M.2 SSDs with Super Raid and an HD webcam capable of 30 frames per second at 720p
  • Lenovo Tab S8: Super-Thin Super-Light And Affordable - While the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is what's creating more talks at IFA 2014, Lenovo also seems to have come out with a device worth a story or two. Called the Tab S8, the new Android tablet could be the one for you if you are looking for an affordable, thin, and light slate coming with decent specs. The 8-inch Lenovo Tab S8 measures 0.31 inch thick, so it's almost as slim as the Retina display iPad mini and Galaxy Tab S 8.4. It weighs in at 0.65 pound, so lighter than the iPad but slightly heavier than the Tab S. The slate, which runs Android 4.4 KitKat, is the first Lenovo Android tablet to come equipped with a quad-core Intel Atom processor. Other specs include a 1,920 x 1,200 display, 2GB RAM, and a seven-hour battery life. But the best thing is that the device is coming with a price tag of $199. If you haven't realized it, that price is around half that of what Apple and Samsung are offering their devices for. So, are you interested in the new Lenovo Tab S8?

Microsoft confirmed that the block was starting to be removed on some accounts and is rolling out to additional accounts at this time.
  • Microsoft said to be interested in popular Android mod, Cyanogen   - If you are not familiar with the Android community, one of the most popular modifications to install on your device is a build of the OS by Cyanogen. The custom software is far from a novelty as the team behind the OS has raised millions of dollars and it now ships natively on the OnePlus One smartphone. Seeing that the Android modification is getting popular, and that Android itself owns the largest slice of the market share pie, Cyanogen is attracting attention from big name companies, such as Microsoft. According to The Information, they are saying that the team has recently met with Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella. What if they were in talks with Cyanogen to distribute ROMs of Windows Phone that would run on non-Windows Phone models, like say a Nexus or Galaxy S 5? That would be the best way to go about it. Microsoft has already done the hard work-- their kernel runs just fine on most all of the CPUs used by all these Android phones. All they would need to develop are additional drivers to fill any gaps with device support, gyroscopes, wifi, etc. They would then have not only the services, but also the app market as well. Just a thought.....

Streaming video may be the wave of the future but optical discs aren't ready to concede defeat just yet. During the IFA trade show on Friday, the Blu-ray Disc Association said it is nearing completion of a version of its optical disc technology that can support high-resolution 4K videos. They plan to license the new technology by mid-2015 which will enable the first 4K Blu-ray players to arrive on store shelves in time for the holiday buying season. 4K Blu-ray discs will offer much more than a simple boost in resolution. Victor Matsuda, chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association global promotions committee, told CNET that the new specification will also improve color gamut dramatically. It'll also offer a higher dynamic range which will make details in highlights and shadows more visible. But, will that be enough to keep customers interested?
