(hx) 03:45 PM CET - Jan,06 2015 - Post a comment
At its press conference at CES 2015 in Vegas Nvidia introduced the new Tegra X1 "Mobile Superchip" destined to succeed the cirrent K1, and providing twice as much performance. Tegra X1 is based on the Maxwell architecture, supports OpenGL ES 3.1, Open GL4.5, DirectX 12 and AEP, and comes with 256 stream processors. And in order to demonstrate the chip's power, NVIDIA showcased Epic's Elemental Tech Demo running in real-time on that new mobile GPU.

NVIDIA's Tegra X1 integrates four high-performance ARM Cortex-A57 cores with 512KB L2 cache, 48KB L1 instruction cache and 32KB L1 data cache per core as well as four low-power ARM Cortex-A53 cores with 128KB L2 cache, 32KB L1 instruction cache and 32KB L1 data cache per core.

  • Best Gaming CPUs For The Money: January 2015 - If you don't have the time to research benchmarks, or if you don't feel confident enough in your ability to pick the right processor for your next gaming machine, fear not. THG has a simple list of the best gaming CPUs offered for the money.
  • 20 Of The Worst PC Setups - I really like this monthly Worst PC Setups thing they do over at ThinkComputers. I have no idea where they come up with all these, but it sure does make you feel better about your rig :D
  • Serious Security Flaw in MS Windows 8.1 - This security issue exists on a up2date ms win 8.1 and was known to ms since september, yet still unpatched.
  • A Hacker's Hit List of American Infrastructure - According to cyber-security professionals, the Sony hack may be a prelude to a cyber attack on United States infrastructure that could occur in 2015, as a result of a very different, self-inflicted document dump from the Department of Homeland Security in July
  • Want to launch your own DDoS attacks? Just buy them from Lizard Squad - Referred to as a "booter", LizardStresser is a service you can sign up for on a monthly or lifetime (five years really) basis. There are a number of packages available that can be used to "stress test" a particular server for anything from a couple of minutes to several hours at a time. As soon as one attack, er stress test, is over, more can be launched straight away at no extra cost, providing you are within the same billing cycle. With monthly fees ranging from just $2.99 up to $69.99, and lifetime subscriptions costing between $29.99 and $309.99, it's all very affordable stuff, ripe for abuse. Of course, LizardStresser tool is not being directly marketed as a DDoS weapon. Take a look at the terms of service -- yes, even a DDoS tool has such a thing -- and you're told that: "Permission is granted to stress test dedicated servers and networks owned by you. This is the opportunity to make your firewalls better, not to misuse against the law."
  • Sony offers compensation for PlayStation Network DDoS attacks - All members of the PlayStation Network will be treated to a ten percent discount code that can be used to obtain a one-time discount in the PlayStation Store. The discount can be applied to the full contents of a cart, so the more you buy, the more you save. The codes are not yet available, but will be released "sometime this month".
  • US sanctions North Korea over the Sony hacks - The US government has sanctioned North Korea over the Sony hacks, saying the country tried to intimidate US businesses and artists from exercising their right of freedom of speech
  • GOG.com Immense Interplay 50% off Weekend Promo - Some Interplay classics for cheap. MDK 1 & 2, Sacrifice, Freespace 2, and the Descent Series come highly recommended.
  • OS-agnostic smartphone works with Android, Windows, and Mozilla OS - Alcatel OneTouch is apparently saving a few surprises for the Consumer Electronics Show next week, because the press release announcing the Pixi 3 is particularly light on details. The Pixi 3 boasts 4G LTE connectivity and comes in 3", 4.5", and 5" variants, but that's all we know about it. There's no word on the underlying hardware, which versions of each OS are supported, or when the Pixi 3 will be available. Nothing in the press release suggests the Pixi 3 is capable of hosting multiple operating systems simultaneously, so dual- or triple-booting is probably out of the question.
  • Apple sued over 'shrinking' storage - Apple is facing a lawsuit for not telling users about the amount of memory required by an upgrade its flagship operating system. The complaint has been filed in California by Miami residents Paul Orshan and Christopher Endara who say that iOS 8 can occupy up to 23.1% of the memory available on some Apple devices. In addition, upgrading devices from the earlier iOS 7 to 8 can cause people to lose up to 1.3 gigabytes of memory, said papers filed in support of the legal action.
  • Theater Attendance At Its Lowest In 19 Years - North America had its lowest number of folks heading to the movies in two decades in 2014, reports the Hollywood Reporter, citing about 1.2 billion consumers who purchased movie tickets between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31. The last time things were this slow was 1995, when only 1.21 billion people went to the movies. The figures for 2014 aren't set in stone just yet - though without a working time machine it'd be tough to go back and change them that much - as they won't be released until the National Association of Theater Owners calculates the average movie ticket price for the year. It's expected to be around $8.15, up from $8.13 in 2013. Admissions have been up and down over the years, HR notes, especially when there are more expensive fees for 3D or IMAX movies.

Greider introduces himself as a photographer from America, and the town's patriarch, Old Brenner, provides him with shelter for the harsh winter ahead. The village cut off by snowfall and barely a ray of sunlight reaching the valley, a tragic accident leads to the death of one of Brenner's beloved sons. When another son is mysteriously killed, it's clear this is not a coincidence: the time has come for Brenner's family to pay, and Greider plans to settle a score long forgotten by everyone but him.

  • 6TB Hard Drive Round-Up - Though Hitachi chose to take a unique approach with Helium, both Seagate and WD have taken a more traditional route by packing more bits per platter and more platters into their drive enclosures, so the three drives we are looking at in this roundup are similar in their construction - with no fancy gases or anything like that. If you want the fastest 6TB drive available currently, it is the Seagate Enterprise Capacity V4, no doubt about it. The WD Red and Green drives are both so similar in specification and performance we have a hard time drawing any meaningful distinctions between them.

  • Android Lollipop 5.0.1 found to be hogging RAM, fix incoming - The 5.0.1 update to Android Lollipop seems to be consuming a lot of memory and the Android Open Source Project developers have now acknowledged the issue. It was reported recently that Google would start seeding the 5.0.1 update to Nexus users, and few manufacturers also decided to skip the initial 5.0 version of Android Lollipop and release the latest one for their devices. However, an issue which has been reported by many users may be a deal breaker and does not have any fix at the moment. Devices updated to Android 5.0.1 have been reported to consume more than a gigabyte of RAM, randomly forcing many apps to close down or crash. The problem is not limited to any device in particular and is affecting all those running on this latest version of Android. Some of the comments have indicated that the issue has existed since the developer preview and made it to the final release, taking even more memory.
  • Big Hero: The Epic Jump Game (Apple & Android) - Digital World Studio has released another multi-platform hit game: Big Hero: The Epic Jump Game, which was featured over 600 times on the Apple App Store and has been getting an overwhelming response on Google Play Store. • T-Mobile Details LTE Expansion Plans - T-Mobile CEO John Legere took to the company's blog to shed some light on its plans headed into 2015. To start, the company claims it will cover 300 million POPs with LTE by the end of 2015. It currently covers 264 million. T-Mobile will deploy Wideband LTE to a total of 150 markets around the country, though it is already present in about 120 markets. The company said it will eventually provide LTE to 350 markets via its 700MHz spectrum holdings. T-Mobile only recently began to deploy LTE on 700MHz, and didn't say how long it will take to reach those 350 markets. Legere noted MetroPCS, T-Mobile's prepaid service, will continue to see uncharted growth. The small carrier has already made big gains since T-Mobile acquired it in 2013. Legere also took the opportunity to poke fun at T-Mobile's rivals and make predictions about what's to come over the course of the next 12 months. Among others, Legere believes T-Mobile will overtake Sprint to become the nation's third-largest network operators in the very near future. (He had previously predicted by the end of 2014.) Legere says fourth quarter earnings reports, expected at the end of January, will provide the necessary details to make that determination.

  • Download the official recovery images for Microsoft Surface - One of the handier features of Windows 8/8.1/RT has been the ability to refresh the installation or wipe the installation clean without having to rummage around for installation media. This has been the case with respect to Microsoft's range of Surface tablets given that the recovery image is stored on the device itself which has made recovery a fairly straightforward process. However, things may not always go according to plan. The recovery image on your Surface could become corrupted or perhaps you've deleted the recovery image from your device to free up additional space. Thankfully, you can now download the official recovery images for any Microsoft Surface from the original Surface RT all the way through to Surface Pro 3 at the Microsoft site. Make sure you login with your Microsoft account that you use to login on your Surface as that will help the page recommend the appropriate image to download in the first step. Then, it's just a matter of downloading the selected image, creating the recovery drive and using it to refresh or reset your Surface. You don't have to have a working Surface to create a recovery drive using this method as it can be run on a regular Windows PC. This might be useful if Windows won't boot at all on your Surface and recovery drive cannot be found

Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.

  • Windows 10: OneDrive dives deeper into the OS - Microsoft's cloud storage service, OneDrive, is quickly becoming more than just a basic locker in the cloud. With Windows 10, Microsoft is now making it possible to store app data on OneDrive, along with other aspects of your install. Inside the 'Update and Recovery' settings tab inside Windows 10 build 9901, the 'Backup' option gives you toggles for sending data to OneDrive for, well, backup purposes. Along with app data, you can store your Start layout, passwords, favorites and 'other' system settings to OneDrive. If you are thinking some of this sounds familiar, you are right, as with Windows 8, using your Microsoft Account, some of this data was synced already. What appears to be changing is the ability to store it in OneDrive and having more control over what data is syncing across the platforms. This addition is new in 9901, in 9879, there was no 'Backup' option available in the 'Update and Recovery'.
  • Skype's real-time translation tool now available - Microsoft made a promise earlier this year to deliver a preview of Skype's real-time translation tool for everyone to use and today, they are delivering on their words. The company has announced today that a preview of Skype's real-time translation software is available for Windows 8.1 users who signed up for the Skype Translator preview here. While Microsoft showed off a German real-time translation earlier this year, the preview is limited to Spanish and English for voice chat. But, for those of you who prefer to message each other with Skype, over 40 languages are supported. Even though this is an early iteration of the tool, it is quite easy to see how this service is extremely valuable. Being able to chat in real-time with anyone around the world without having to worry about the language barrier is game-changing.

Amazon Prime members in this part of the Big Apple can now use a mobile app to select and buy urgent essentials such as paper towels, shampoo, books, toys and batteries – delivered to their doors with great haste; the service runs from 6am til midnight, seven days a week. Two hour delivery is free; one hour delivery costs $7.99. Amazon Prime members don't necessarily have to fork out extra fees to benefit from Prime Now. All it requires, apart from geography, is the Prime Now app for Android or iOS. Interested Prime subscribers in other areas/cities can even download the right app now and be notified when the Prime Now service becomes available to them.
  • Mysterious Malware Is Infecting 100k Wordpress Sites - - A Russian malware called SoakSoak has infected over 100,000 Wordpress sites since this Sunday, turning blogs into attack platforms. It's a potential shitshow, and it could've been prevented earlier this fall. Google has already blocked 11,000 domains to try to curb the damage. According to security firm Sucuri, the malware uses a vulnerability in a slideshow plug-in called Slider Revolution. The Slider Revolution team has known about the vulnerability since September, but it looks like they failed to fix it before the security hole got crammed with steaming hot malware. Researchers at Sucuri are warning that it'll be hard to completely eradicate the malware as long as so many site owners don't know it's there. In addition to removing the malicious code, they will need to update the premium plug-in. If the plug-in came as part of a theme, it won't update automatically, which means site admins will have to manually update.
  • Obama says North Korea hacked Sony, vows response - The attack was "far more destructive than any seen before on American soil," intelligence officials have concluded, according to The New York Times. But there's still very much we don't know about the attack, as even the FBI statement acknowledges. Earlier Friday a US official reported that the North Korean hack may have a Chinese link either through collaboration with Chinese actors or by using Chinese servers to mask the origination of the hack.
  • Apple iPhone 6 functions can be hobbled by magnetic accessories - There are reports of some Apple iPhone 6 users facing issues with magnetic accessories adversely interfering with the functions of their shiny new smartphones. Magnets have been known to interfere with electronic devices and accessories for many years so what's the new problem? Apparently Apple has been telling accessory makers that are part of its MFi (Manufactured for iPhone) program to avoid certain metallic and magnetic accessory furniture. An official Apple document does already talk about these issues but a reminder has gone out to MFi licensees.
  • Apple closes its online retail store in Russia - Apple said that it has taken down its online retail store and is reviewing prices amid extreme fluctuations in the value of Russia's currency, the rouble. It is not known when the store will return. Last month, Apple increased prices in its online store in Russia by 20% after rouble's free-fall made products cheaper than in the rest of Europe. Russia's central bank has spent $80 billion and raised interest rates dramatically from 10.5% to 17%, however, it has so far failed to stop the free-fall which has halved the value of the rouble against the US dollar since January. The central bank has pledged further measures to try to stabilize the currency, with First Deputy Governor Sergei Shvetsov describing the situation "critical". The currency's free-fall has been blamed on Western sanctions on Russia over its stance on Ukraine and the price of oil which has also halved in price this year.
  • Instagram Adds New Filters to Android and iOS Apps - Instagram today pushed out an update to the Android and iOS versions of its mobile photography application. The app adds five filters, the first new ones to appear in several years. The filters are named Aden, Crema, Ludwig, Perpetua, and Slumber. Beyond the filters themselves, Instagram now allows users to manage the filters. Users can rearrange the order in which the filters appear, as well as hide filters they don't like. Instagram for Android and iOS is free to download from the Play Store and iTunes App Store, respectively.
  • Samsung is reportedly in talks with LoopPay - Samsung is reportedly in talks with LoopPay to launch a payment system for its devices similar to Apple Pay. There's no denying that mobile payments is an emerging area of interest for technology companies and everyone wants to get into it before their is a clear winner. With the entry of Apple with its NFC based Apple Pay solution, Samsung seems to have taken the hint to enter the market with a system for its own devices. According to re/code, Samsung is in talks with LoopPay, which already has a mobile wallet system in place, for a possible licensing deal of the technology. Samsung is expected to launch its next flagship smartphone in the first half of 2015 and might be aiming to launch this wallet system alongside the device. In the Product Information video about the Mirai, the narrator goes into a short history of Toyota's green car advances. After talking about the Prius and the Prius Plug In, making EVs for urban commuting and the rest of Toyota's advanced fuel programs, we hear this: "Never satisfied though, Toyota engineers were simultaneously working on a brand new technology that met all the driver's needs with an even smaller carbon footprint, one that took its lead from nature itself."

Windows 10 Xbox App For PC Spotted - tech
(hx) 03:49 PM CET - Dec,15 2014 - Post a comment / read (5)
A consumer build for Windows 10 has been leaked and The Verge has reported some of the features that Microsoft has implemented in it. According to The Verge, a new Xbox App is now present in Windows 10. Not only that, but Cortana is now present as a Siri-like program that responds to text and voice commands.
Microsoft is currently readying an updated preview of Windows 10 to focus on the consumer features of the upcoming operating system. While the company plans to detail those improvements at a January press event, a consumer build (9901) has leaked out onto the web today to provide an early look at the various changes Microsoft is making.

The biggest new feature since the recent technical preview is the addition of Cortana. A video demonstration leaked earlier this month, but the build itself shows how Cortana sits at the top of the search interface for Windows 10, responding to text and voice commands. It's all very similar to the Windows Phone version, as you’d expect, with access to the notebook, reminders, and interests. It's not entirely functional, but it's a very early look at the digital assistant in Windows 10 so the final version will likely change significantly.

Elsewhere there's also a new Xbox app. It appears to act as a gateway to the entire Xbox ecosystem, including access to achievements, friends lists, activity feeds, and the Store. Microsoft notes that it's an early preview of the app, so it may well include SmartGlass integration in future. It's also a first glimpse at how the software maker is designing its native Windows 10 apps, and the calculator app has been updated in a similar way.

Microsoft has also added new animations to the TaskView switcher in Windows 10, and the company appears to be moving towards removing the traditional Control Panel by updating the settings app with a familiar view that’s similar to Control Panel. The settings button has also been removed from the Charms Bar, demonstrating that Microsoft is clearly focusing on improving access to settings with Windows 10.

TechNews - NVIDIA GTX 960 in January - tech
(hx) 12:01 PM CET - Dec,13 2014 - Post a comment
  • $700 off Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro (2.6GHz, 16GB, 1TB, 750M) - MacMall is now taking pre-orders for its deepest discounted MacBook Pro ever - a 2013 15-inch model fully loaded with a 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 (Crystalwell) processor, 16GB RAM, 1TB PCIe-based flash storage, Intel Iris Pro Graphics + NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M, 2 Thunderbolt 2 ports, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and an 8 hour battery for $2599.99. That's roughly $700 off Apple's original MSRP, $600 off the company's recently revised MSRP, and the lowest price available anywhere by $200, according to our Price Guides. The 2013 MacBook Pro family is also nearly identical to the models that replaced it a year later - with the exception of slighter faster CPUs - making them exceptional values for frugal shoppers. MacMall says it expects to receive its shipment of these 15" MacBook Pros from Apple within the next 5 days and will begin shipping them out (shipping is free) to customers in plenty of time for the holiday, with orders being filled on a first-come, first-served basis. It's also worth noting that MacMall will not collect sales tax on orders shipped outside the following states: CA, CO, GA, IL, MN, NC, NY, TN, and WI. In addition to this model, MacMall is also listed as offering the lowest prices on a number of current MacBooks and iMacs in our Price Guides. Among them is also the most affordable MacBook Pro currently available to shoppers: a 2.4GHz 13-inch model from 2013 featuring a 2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 2.4GH (Haswell) processor, 4GB RAM, 128GB PCIe-based flash storage, Intel Iris Graphics, Two Thunderbolt 2 ports, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and a 9 hour battery for $1,049.00 after a $20 mail-in-rebate.
  • NVIDIA preparing to release GTX 960 in January - According to a report by Sweclockers, NVIDIA is preparing to release its next Maxwell GPU, GM206, in January as GTX 960. Aimed at the $250-$300 market, the GTX 960 will perform similar to the GTX 770, albeit at much lower power and price. Interestingly, GM206 is reported to have an extremely slim 128-bit memory bus, which is half that of not just GK104 or GK204 but even it's predecessor, GK106, which featured a 192-bit bus. NVIDIA will most likely make up for the loss in bandwidth with higher memory clocks and more importantly, lossless compression. GTX 960 is expected to be showed off behind closed doors at CES 2014, with an official release later in the January 2015.

  • Seagate Selling Affordable 8TB Hard Drives - Finally, an affordable 8TB drive has surfaced. Sold by Seagate under the "Archive Label" brand and aimed at those looking for a cost-effective storage solution, the drive retails for around $270, which is far more palatable than the $1,000 or so that 8TB drive from HGST are currently going for. That works out at around $0.033 per gigabyte. The drive 3.5-inch 5,900RPM SATA-3 drives feature 128MB of cache and come in two flavors; the ST8000AS0002 which doesn't have hardware encryption, and the ST8000AS0012 "Seagate Secure" model which does. The drive contains six platters and uses Shingled Magnetic Recording technology that allows an extra 25 percent more data per platter. Average read speeds are rated at 150MB/s with a maximum sustained rate of 190MB/s. The drives consume 7.5W when active and only 5W when idle.
  • Microsoft announces Windows 10 press event for January 21st - Microsoft is holding an event on its campus January 21st to talk about the next chapter of Windows 10 and it is expected the company will talk about the consumer release of Windows 10. The event is said to be an all day affair as well and Neowin will be there. For those who are curious, the event will be live streamed this time around and will include presentations from Satya Nadella, Terry Myerson and Joe Belfiore, and Phil Spencer. That crew represents the top of the org chart for nearly all things Microsoft which means that there will be much to talk about at the event. The name of the release may not be called the consumer preview but may be called January Technical Preview and could be part of a new release cycle where the company pushes out a new release each month. No word on all of the topics that will be covered but seeing that it is an all-day event, but we hope to hear about Windows Phone and Windows RT. Seeing that Phil Spencer will be there as well, there should be some Xbox content too.
  • Apple Releases iOS 8.1.2, It Will Anger Users - Without any warning Apple has today released iOS 8.1.2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users running iOS 8. But it isn't the long awaited raft of bug fixes needed for users affected by the ongoing problems with iOS 8. Instead the release "addresses a problem where ringtones purchases through the iTunes Store may have been removed from your device." Apple notes a dedicated url - itunes.com/restore-tones - has been setup for recovering those ringtones. Apple does also state that iOS 8.1.2 has "bug fixes" but the URL it provides has no information on the release at the time of writing and Apple always calls out more significant bug fixes in its main release notes Furthermore iOS 8.1.2 comes in at a paltry 28.2MB (this may differ slightly from device-to-device) making it a minor point release.
  • Samsung starts updating the Galaxy S5 to Android 5.0 Lollipop - Android 5.0 has seen the fastest uptake in the history of the OS, with many manufacturers having promised their users the update within a very short time of its official release by Google. Samsung, the largest Android manufacturer by a fair margin, is making sure it isn't left behind and has started updating the Galaxy S5 to Lollipop, barely a month after Google published its final source code. There's the all new Material Design look mixed with Samsung's infamous TouchWiz skin, new animations, lockscreen and heads-up notifications, improved performance and battery life, priority mode, and a plethora of other new stuff. Samsung has also built in a few enhancements of its own, including a new clipboard tool that keeps track of all copied text and screenshots, the newer fingerprint interface from the Galaxy Note 4, and also developed many of its proprietary apps from scratch. The update is currently rolling out in Poland over-the-air and via Samsung's Kies application, and is expected to make its way to other markets in the coming weeks.
  • Samsung Galaxy E5 & Galaxy E7 full specs revealed - The Galaxy E7 (SM-E700F) is expected to be the most impressive member of the Galaxy E-series family. It will reportedly be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor clocked at 1.2GHz with an Adreno 306 GPU and come with 2GB RAM. The SUPER AMOLED display is said to be of the same size as the Galaxy A7, but with 1280 x 720 HD resolution instead of 1920 x 1080 on the Galaxy A7. It will also have 16GB internal memory, 13MP rear camera, 5MP selfie camera, and a large 2950mAh capacity battery
  • Samsung Galaxy Alpha&Galaxy Note 4 feature Corning's Gorilla Glass - The Galaxy Alpha was the first Android smartphone from Samsung to feature a metallic construction, but that wasn't the only thing the Galaxy Alpha has going for it. Corning has announced that the Galaxy Alpha is the first mobile device to come with Gorilla Glass 4; the device itself was announced back in August, but it's only now that Corning and Samsung have made the fact about the phone's display official.  According to Corning, the latest iteration of Gorilla Glass can survive 80 percent of drops from 1m (3.3 feet) on a rough surface; its 0.4 mm thickness is the same as that of Gorilla Glass 3, but the company claims that it's twice as strong as its competitors. The increased toughness should be a boon on the Galaxy Alpha, which is extremely thin at 6.7mm and is therefore more prone to accidental drops (though its small size helps in offering users a better grip.) Samsung's latest phablet flagship, the Galaxy Note 4, also features Gorilla Glass 4, and it's likely we will see it on a lot more devices in the coming months.
  • Lamborghini set to release $6.000 smartphone - It may come as a surprise, but Lamborghini is set to launch a smartphone called the 88 Tauri. This new device will come from Tonino Lamborghini group, which got its name from the founder himself, who is the son of the man behind the luxury car industry. The upcoming 88 Tauri runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and features a 5-inch HD display with a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor. It has a hefty 3 GB of RAM, so there is definitely no need to worry about certain apps not running on the device. The device packs a 20-megapixel rear shooter with a sapphire glass lens, and an 8-megapixel front camera, perfect for those selfie moments. You also won't run out of space pretty soon, as it contains 64 GB of internal storage
  • Microsoft Offers Its MSN Apps to Android and iOS Devices - Microsoft today expanded the availability of its MSN-branded apps beyond Windows Phone, adding them to the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store. The apps, which have evolved on the Windows Phone platform this year, include MSN Food & Drink, MSN Health & Fitness, MSN Money, MSN News, and MSN Sports. These five are available to both Android and iOS today. The MSN Weather app is available to Android today, too, and will be available to iOS soon. Of note, Microsoft said its MSN Health & Fitness app makes use of Apple's HealthKit tools, which will allow iPhone owners to track steps and other fitness goals. Microsoft has targeted Android and iOS aggressively this year with its own applications and services, including MS Office, its core productivity suite, and other utilities such as OneNote and OneDrive. All the apps are free to download from the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store.

  • 2015 GMC Denali Runs 0-60 mph in 4.5 sec!  - The tuners over at Hennessey have that demographic covered with their growling, supercharged power kits for the GMC Yukon Denali. The upgrades come in three forms for the SUV's 6.2-liter V8: HPE550 with 557 horsepower, HPE600 with 605 hp and HPE650 with 665 hp. This video showcases the full-bore version, and this Denali can definitely hustle in a straight line. The power bump comes courtesy of a 2.9-liter supercharger, intercooler and high-flow cylinder heads to add over 200 horsepower compared to stock, and the final result is a bellowing SUV that rears up off he line to throw the driver back into the seat. The sprint to 60 miles per hour lasts just 4.5 seconds!

Samsung's Gear-VR Headset on Sale Now, $200 - tech
(hx) 04:19 PM CET - Dec,09 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
Samsung's first stab at virtual reality entertainment is here. The Innovator Edition Gear VR headset can be purchased for $200 through Samsung or AT&T. It's ready to wow friends and family this holiday season. Well, we say it's $200, but because the headset only works when a Galaxy Note 4 is plugged in, you'll need one of the $800 smartphones too. Otherwise, it's a useless, vision-obscuring face mask :P

If you own the Note 4, or plan on picking one up at the same time, the Gear VR opens up an entire new world in front of your eyes. The smartphone slots into the visor, where it becomes the heart of the Gear VR - offering up its Quad HD, 5.7-inch screen, Snapdragon 805 processor, and many different sensors to bring a 360-degree, virtual reality entertainment world to life.

  • XFX Radeon R9 285 Black Edition Review: Maximum Overdrive - XFX's Black Edition card is undeniably one of the best Radeon R9 285s available. It sports the highest factory overclock on the market, along with one of the most capable coolers mounted on a Tonga GPU. Its simple and understated design isn't flXashy, but its unassuming size makes for an uncomplicated installation. Additionally, the card is quite willing to overclock (up +20% performance).
  • Philips 288P6LJEB 28-Inch Ultra HD Monitor Tested - It is inevitable that we'll have 4K IPS screens at this price point eventually. It's hard to say when that will happen. For now, though, the Philips 288P6LJEB and its brethren represent the best value in Ultra HD displays. If gaming is not part of your daily routine, any of these monitors will suffice. Entertainment buffs will want to stick to either the Asus or Planar displays. Philips' and Dell's screens simply have too much input lag to make them viable for high-speed play. For all other uses, we have no problem recommending the 288P6LJEB.
  • The Crew Benchmarked: Graphics & CPU Performance - You'll need a powerful GPU to maintain 60fps at 1080p in The Crew -- ideally a GeForce GTX 780 or Radeon R9 290 given that anything faster is overkill with the frame rate cap. Cards such as the HD 7970 (R9 280X) and GTX 770 are more than capable of delivering perfectly smooth gameplay and there are many GPUs that will offer 40fps, such as the R9 270X and GTX 760. For a console-like 30fps you'll only need a lowly GTX 750 Ti or HD 7850, though realize that you'll recieve considerably better image quality with the ultra settings in place and 4xMSAA.

  • Sprint to Woo AT&T and Verizon Customers with Halved Rates  - Sprint plans to go after AT&T and Verizon customers with an aggressive and enticing campaign. Beginning Friday, Sprint will offer rate plans to AT&T and Verizon customers that are half what they're already paying. For example, an AT&T customer who pays $300 per month will be offered a comparable Sprint plan that costs only $150 per month. The offer only extends to the service costs, including minutes, messaging, and data. It does not include subsidies for device payments. Sprint will waive activation fees and pay up to $350 to cover the ETFs of those who switch, though the new customers will need to turn in their old devices. In order to score the half-price plan, new Sprint customers will need to buy a device from Sprint at full retail price or finance it through Sprint Easy Pay. They'll also have to provide a copy of their most recent wireless bill for verification of the monthly cost. Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure hinted via Twitter that the company intends to "launch one of our most exciting promotions ever, especially designed for Verizon and att customers who love to save money." The promotion does not apply to T-Mobile or current Sprint customers.

  • This could be Apple's answer to the Surface Pro 3 - According to Macotakara, who has obtained an early copy of the November edition of Mac Fan magazine, states that the issue will have a leaked blueprint of Apple's 12" iPad that is expected to release in 2015. The iPad Air Plus, as it has been dubbed, will have a measurement of 12.02 x 8.69 x .27 in. But, perhaps the most interesting feature of the new 'iPad Air Plus' will be its four speakers. This would position a speaker at each corner of the device, allowing for superb sound regardless of orientation. The site also reports that this new tablet will be the first to utilize a new A9 processor and should see a release between April - June of 2015. While the 'iPad Air Plus' does bring touch capability and a larger size, it still would be at a disadvantage compared to the Surface Pro 3 that runs a full-fledged OS.
  • Windows 10 will cater to audiophiles with native FLAC support - The news was unveiled by Gabriel Aul on Twitter, who clarified that any win32 application will be able to natively play FLAC audio. This follows a similar post in November when MKV support was added to the 9860 build of Windows 10. MKV is a container which has the ability to compress large HD content into small file sizes alongside an optional subtitle track. As a result, digital versions of anime programs are often distributed via this method. The distinct lack of FLAC and MKV compatibility often meant that users downloaded VLC or another third party program to enjoy their preferred format. Given these announcements, it will be interesting to see if many people transition from VLC to the rejuvenated Windows Media Player application in Windows 10, especially seeing how our own tests show Microsoft's built-in player is often much more efficient than its third-party counterparts.
  • Symantec uncovers state-controlled Regin surveillance malware - Symantec has uncovered an advanced piece of malware called Regin that has been used in spying campaigns against government and corporate targets since 2008. The security firm said that the Backdoor.Regin spyware displays "a degree of technical competence rarely seen", and has been used to target major organisations and individuals across the globe. Symantec's research indicated that Regin is likely to have been developed over many years by a nation state for surveillance operations, given the capabilities and resources behind the malware. Regin's advances derive from its 'stealth' features, including anti-forensic capabilities, two encryption features, and the ability to communicate using covert methods such as hiding commands in HTTP cookies. Regin is a multi-stage threat that hides and encrypts each stage except the first. The malware then starts a domino effect of decryption, and loads the four subsequent stages. "Each individual stage provides little information on the complete package. Only by acquiring all five stages is it possible to analyse and understand the threat," said Symantec. The software can also deliver customised payloads, most of which appear to have been designed with spying in mind. Potential payloads include remote access features such as taking screenshots, stealing passwords and monitoring web traffic.

Dragon Age: Inquisition Benchmarked - tech
(hx) 10:46 PM CET - Nov,24 2014 - Post a comment / read (1)
Dragon Age: Inquisition has been built with Frostbite 3, the same game engine used by Battlefield 4 except BioWare also integrated a vegetation engine called 'Speed Tree' that has been used in many games and movies, from Avatar to Star Trek. The result is a stunning world that scales surprisingly well on older gear, with the game having been designed for consoles as well as PCs. Folks with high-end rigs can look forward to higher resolutions along with better textures, lighting and characters models. As always, TechSpot used the latest AMD and Nvidia drivers for testing, which included 25 DirectX 11 graphics card configurations from both companies covering all prices. Here's an excerpt:
As always, it's loyal customers who lose with aggressive anti-piracy measures. Pirates don't care, either because their copy comes with less strings attached or simply because they will play something else they were never going to pay for. This subject has been beaten to death, but that's all the more reason for us to be disappointed in EA. Getting back to the results... gamers who want to play at 1920x1200 or 1080p with everything maxed will need a pretty serious graphics setup as even the GTX 980 fell short of 60fps, while you can write off more affordable cards such as the R9 270 and GTX 660. Ideally, you'll want at least an R9 270X/R9 285 or GTX 680/770. It was interesting to find that while the GTX 770 averaged just 38fps at 1920x1200, the aging HD 7970 carried on with 40fps. Also, if you can believe it, the GTX 780 was upstaged by the HD 7970 GHz and R9 280X.

We found that Dragon Age: Inquisition was predominantly GPU-limited when using 'realistic' quality settings. Playing at 1920x1200 on ultra-quality we found that the AMD FX range was able to deliver the same performance as Intel's Core i5 and Core i7. However, if you reduce the quality to 'unrealistic' levels and remove the GPU bottleneck caused by the GTX 980, then the AMD processors do get stomped by Intel's Core i5 and i7s. This might only be an issue for those gaming with multiple GPUs.

  • AMD's Carrizo APU is coming in mid-2015, will share package with Beema successor - In the wake of a "Future of Computing" event held today in Singapore, John Byrne, senior VP and general manager of AMD's Computing and Graphics unit, has taken to YouTube to hype the firm's upcoming Carrizo APU. • Best Computer Monitors: November 2014 -  Price versus performance is certainly key in any display purchase decision. But it's also important to pick the right tool for the task. In related news, Samsung plans to release the "first-ever ultra-high-definition monitors" with support for the display technology in March 2015. Samsung's first FreeSync monitors will include the UD590, which will be available in 23.6" and 28" variants, as well as the UE850, which will come in 23.6", 27", and 31.5" flavors. The announcement doesn't outline specs, but "ultra-high-definition" usually means 4K, or 3840x2160. (2560x1440 is usually called QHD or WQHD.)
  • Apple Disables Trim Support On 3rd Party SSDs In OS X - One of the disadvantages to buying an Apple system is that it generally means less upgrade flexibility than a system from a traditional PC OEM. Over the last few years, Apple has introduced features and adopted standards that made using third-party hardware progressively more difficult. Now, with OS X 10.10 Yosemite, the company has taken another step down the path towards total vendor lock-in and effectively disabled support for third-party SSDs. We say "effectively" because while third-party SSDs will still work, they'll no longer perform the TRIM garbage collection command. Being able to perform TRIM and clean the SSD when its sitting idle is vital to keeping the drive at maximum performance. Without it, an SSD's real world performance will steadily degrade over time. What Apple did with OS X 10.10 is introduce KEXT (Kernel EXTension) driver signing. KEXT signing means that at boot, the OS checks to ensure that all drivers are approved and enabled by Apple. It's conceptually similar to the device driver checks that Windows performs at boot. However, with OS X, if a third-party SSD is detected, the OS will detect that a non-approved SSD is in use, and Yosemite will refuse to load the appropriate TRIM-enabled driver.

"The incorrect software prevents the phone from starting up properly. We will provide replacements for consumers whose phones are affected. The problem has been corrected and the phones currently shipping are fine." When asked, Motorola denied that shipments were halted or recalled because of the bug. The issue appears to only affect the AT&T variant of the Nexus 6. "If a consumer sees the 'welcome' after the first time they turn on the phone, then their device isn't affected and they should use it as normal," said Motorola in an email to Phone Scoop. "People can call [Motorola's] customer service if they have questions."

  • Samsung to Use Curved Screens to Sell More Phones - Samsung hopes to differentiate its smartphones from its competitors' phones by using more curved displays. Samsung is on track to record a huge loss in profit for the year thanks to weaker-than-expected sales of phones such as the Galaxy S5 and Note 4. It has also lost ground to low-cost competitors in markets such as China. Now that big-screened phones are a healthy device category, Samsung is looking for different wants to set its products apart. One way it will do that is to use curved displays, such as the one on the Galaxy Note Edge. "A change in the platform can bring about a variety of new considerations," said Note Edge designer Kim Nam-su. "I think a curved screen is a big solution for overcoming those [competitive] challenges." Reuters suggests Samsung's ability to mass produce curved displays at a lower cost than its rivals gives it an advantage in this respect. The Note Edge is set to go on sale in the U.S later this month. Samsung also plans to resurrect sales of mid-range devices.

Initially the only caveat is that Cydia wasn't included in the tool but now it has been integrated and the creator of Cydia himself says that this jailbreak is "stable enough" for use. Saurik was working with the Pangu team in order to integrate Cydia in the jailbreak. Cydia is widely regarded as the alternative App Store for jailbroken iOS devices. It provides access to apps and customization options that are otherwise not allowed by Apple on iOS devices.

It's a so-called privilege escalation vulnerability, which means that even without a password an attacker could gain the highest level of access on a machine, known as root access. From there, the attacker has full control of the system. It affects the newest OS X release, version 10.10, known as Yosemite. • Audi wiring cars with cameras to see how ferrets tear them apart - In this German-language video, we see a batch of Audi engineers wiring up an A3 Cabriolet with a network of small cameras. The goal? To help identify where and how stone martens - small, ferret-like animals - attack cars. The idea is to observe the animals' behavior around the vehicles, see where they go, what they chew on, and work to develop solutions. FYI, in Europe it is a common problem to have wild, ferret-like animals crawl into the engine bay of cars while parked and idle and bite through brake/power steering and other lines/hoses. Audi Deutschland's quality control is seeing where the ferrets go within the engine compartment, which lines they chew on. Based on the video, they will then look to use different materials that a ferret doesn't like biting into. Looks totally random, but it is an issue in Germany and Europe in general.

But the bald eagle in the video below seems to be very clever also. The eagle has understood that there's no need to spend too much energy to hunt a fish when a fisherman can do the task for the bird. The bird can be seen flying away with the fish caught by a guy named Norman Dreger as he is left to enjoy the sound of the unwinding reel and curse the situation.

Alien: Isolation - Video Card Performance Review - tech
(hx) 09:09 PM CET - Nov,07 2014 - Post a comment
The chaps over at HardOCP have posted the Alien: Isolation - Video Card Performance Review. Here's a taster:
Alien: Isolation performs extremely well across a wide swath of GPUs, which many times means the graphics are subpar, but that is not the case here. This game is a showroom of DX11 efficiency; Watch Dogs eat your heart out. We haven't seen the likes of this much attention to detail using DX11 on the PC in a very long time. We hope to see more titles focus on this. Less console-itis please.

While we mostly have positive things to say about Alien: Isolation, there are a few negatives. The one "downside" to games that perform this well is that it doesn't push the need for a faster GPU. That said it is great to see more mainstream GPU owners getting to sample high end graphics quality gameplay. While the image quality is quite good, there are a couple of things we'd like to see added. More dynamic shadows please; the shadows in the game seem somewhat pre-baked. More dynamic shadows in Alien: Isolation would go a long ways to making the game even more dramatic and compelling. It would be great for at least high end GPU owners to turn on better levels of detail to even further push the game's immersion factor.

We very much need more AA options in Alien: Isolation. The performance is there for a SMAA "4TX" option. We know SMAA 4X exists, Crysis 3 has it and that's an aging title. Finally, we would like to see a high resolution texture pack for PC gamers, or an option to run uncompressed textures. The performance is there, the technology is there, with BC7 compression we would love to see a high resolution DLC texture pack for this game. Add these few things, and visually the game will be much more engrossing.

All of this should explain to you why we are not going to be adding Alien: Isolation to our gaming suite. $200 video cards are plenty powerful enough to play this game at 1440p. At 1080p resolution you can even game with $150 video cards and still play at maximum settings. There is no need to spend $350+ on a video card for Alien: Isolation, unless you are a 4K gamer. At 4K a high-end card will do just fine, but for the majority of people a $200-250 video card is sufficient. We think that Alien: Isolation is a template that other game designers should take notice of. We love the use of open technologies based on DirectCompute and the absence of proprietary technologies that make Alien: Isolation truly a great title. Team Green and game devs please take notice of this, as this is what pushes the gaming industry forward as a whole. And that is simply good for all of us.

TechNews - Graphics cards with 8GB of RAM - tech
(hx) 02:17 PM CET - Nov,01 2014 - Post a comment
There is not really much to say about the 8GB model, as MSI R9 290X GAMING 8GB looks exactly the same as 4GB model. The only way to determine whether you are looking at 4GB or 8GB model is the packaging, where it clearly states the size of the frame buffer. Both variants are equipped with the backplate, so even if 8GB model had dual-sided memory, you wouldn't even notice. However since MSI R9 290X 4GB GAMING doesn't really have any space left on the back of the PCB (high-res picture here), it is safe to assume 8GB models will simply feature higher capacity modules.
  • Get ready for more graphics cards with 8GB of RAM - Cards with twice as much memory are reportedly on the way, though. According to Sweclockers, AMD will answer the GeForce GTX 980 with an 8GB version of the Radeon R9 290X. That variant is due on November 6, the site says, putting it less than a week away.

The Xbook Duo, which unfortunately is only a prototype and is not for sale, can play either Xbox 360 or Xbox One games with the flip of a switch.

  • Samsung Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 officially announced - After indulging in metal frames on the Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4, the Korean manufacturer has decided to go all in. Both the A3 and A5 have an all metal unibody exterior - that means the backs on the devices are non-removable, which, along with the metal unibodies, are a first for an Android device from Samsung. The A3 and A5 are also the slimmest Samsung phones after the Galaxy Alpha. The A3 measures in at 6.9mm thin, while the A5 is even thinner at 6.7mm. In terms of hardware, there's not a lot to be impressed about. The Galaxy A3 and A5 feature 4.5-inch qHD and 5-inch HD Super AMOLED displays, a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, 1/2GB of RAM, 13/8-megapixel cameras, 16GB of expandable internal storage, LTE connectivity, and 1,900/2,300 mAh batteries. Both devices run on Android 4.4.4 KitKat, with an option to choose between four different themes, another feature that we haven't seen on any Samsung-made Android phone before.
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 4 vs Knife - As you will see in the clip, the Note 4's screen is highly sensitive. Even with a knife you can fully operate the device and the capacitive button is also working when the knife touches it. From the looks of things, the Note 4's display is more sensitive than that on the Xperia Z3. And thanks to the Gorilla Glass 3 protection, the screen on the Samsung device is not damaged after the blade attack.
  • Google Opens Nexus 6 Preorders, But Phone Already Backordered - Google has began accepting preorders for the Nexus 6 smartphone via the Google Play Store. However, Google almost immediately sold through its initial supply of the phone. Google says it is "out of inventory" and interested consumers should "check back soon." The phone, made by Motorola, comes in indigo blue or white, and either 32GB or 64GB variants. None of the four models is available. Google didn't say when it will replenish its inventory. Google only offers the unlocked model, which starts at $649. The phone will be sold by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon Wireless in the weeks ahead. The carriers will offer the phone with contract and monthly installment pricing.
  • It's official: Google Glass is banned in movie theaters - Wearing Google Glass at the movies never was cool to begin with, and now it's official: You can't use the smart eyewear inside theaters. The Motion Picture Association of America and the National Association of Theatre Owners on Wednesday said they were officially banning the use of Glass and other wearable recording devices in the cinema as part of an updated "anti-theft policy." The MPAA has said the movie industry loses billions of dollars a year due to piracy.

Specifically, the $40 plan improves the data allowance from 2GB to 3GB, and the $70 plan improves the data allowance from 4GB to 6GB. All other plans/costs remain unchanged. The Mobile Share Value plans have a per-line access charge of $25 per month for AT&T Next subscribers or $40 per month for contract customers. The data packages are in addition to the per-line fees. AT&T also offers 300MB for $20 and 1GB for $25. All the plans include unlimited talk and text. Tablets still carry a $10 monthly access charge. The new plans will be available to new and existing customers from November 2 through November 15. Customers who need more data to share can take advantage of AT&T's Double the Data offer on its Mobile Share Value plans (15GB to 50GB), which now runs to November 15.
  • FTC Sues AT&T Over Throttling Practices - The U.S. Federal Trade Commission today filed a lawsuit against AT&T alleging the company has deceived consumers by throttling the speeds of subscribers to its unlimited plan. AT&T has throttled wireless speeds since 2011, but the FTC says it hasn't properly informed customers about the parameters that trigger it. According to the FTC, AT&T has slowed down broadband speeds of 3.5 million subscribers a total of 25 million times.

  • Samsung Gear S Goes On Sale Nov. 7 - Samsung and its carrier partners announced availability and pricing details for the Gear S smartwatch today. AT&T and Sprint will offer the device starting November 7, but T-Mobile won't sell it until November 9. Pricing for the wearable varies by carrier. The full retail price is $350. AT&T is offering it for $200 with a two-year contract and $10 monthly service charge. Sprint says customers can get the Gear S with $0 down followed by 24 monthly payments of $16. Sprint's Gear S plan also costs $10 per month. T-Mobile is selling the Gear S for $0 down followed by payments of $14.58 for 24 months. T-Mobile's Gear S service plan costs $5 per month. Verizon has yet to announce its pricing and service plan details. The Gear S requires a service plan because it can access 3G networks and make voice calls independent of a smartphone. The Gear S is based on Samsung's Tizen platform and features a 2-inch, curved Super AMOLED display with 360 x 480 pixels. In addition to 3G, the Gear S includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Samsung says it can transition between cellular and Bluetooth connections seamlessly. It includes Samsung's S Voice service for voice commands, and has an on-screen keyboard for composing messages. Other features include Samsung's S Health and fitness apps, music player and gallery apps, and the ability to receive notifications from a variety of services. The Gear S is powered by a dual-core 1.0GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. It has a 300mAh battery, which Samsung claims provides for two days of usage per charge.

  • The clock on most Windows 7 OEM sales runs out this week - At the end of this month, Microsoft will pull the plug on the sales of Windows 7 licenses to OEMs for most versions of the OS. What this means is that vendors, such as HP and Dell, can no longer buy the licence keys from Microsoft for the OS, but they will still be able to sell through their existing stock. So, on November 1st, Windows 7 machines wont disappear completely but they will quickly become much harder to find. For Dell and HP, this is not good news as both companies are still pushing the five-year-old OS with promotions and prominent placing on their websites. As you can see in the images in this post, HP and Dell are still attracting enough customers who want Windows 7 to warrant placing links that are highly visible on their websites.
  • Researchers upgrade fiber tech to transmit data at 255 Terabits/s - Researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology and the University of Central Florida have successfully transmitted data over a new type of fiber at a blistering speed of 255 Terabits per second. The new fiber consists of 7 cores as supposed to the 1 core that standard, state-of-the-art, fibers currently carry. Furthermore, the researchers also implemented two additional "orthogonal dimensions" for data transmission, which is purportedly similar to having 3 cars driving on top of each other. These two methods in turn help to deliver 21 times more bandwidth than the 4-8 Terabits per second of current fiber technology.
  • AT&T ruins Apple SIM by locking it to their carrier - The Apple SIM concept wasn't exactly revolutionary, but it was a pretty great introduction of the technology. The concept is fairly simple: there are a lot of different carriers out there, and rather than buying a SIM card locked down to a specific carrier, you should be able to change your carrier and retain your SIM card. Great right? Unfortunately, it seems that AT&T was unhappy with this level of freedom. The CEO of T-Mobile, John Legere, posted a series of photos on Twitter showing that once a user selects AT&T as their carrier, they can never change it to something else. This effectively turns the Apple SIM into an AT&T SIM card, and ruining a fairly interesting element of Apple SIM. The device itself isn't locked-- you can get a new Apple or carrier SIM and keep using it as you normally would, but the SIM card itself is locked at that point.
  • Apple Watch to iPhone home screen prototype - The inspiration for the project started when programmer Lucas Menge, read an article about modernizing the iOS home home screen by utilizing the design language from the Apple Watch. The result, although only a prototype, is fairly impressive. The iOS home screen has been completely changed to reflect the interface that is found on the Apple Watch. The icons span edge to edge, making better use of the screen real estate. Menge has also made navigation a bit simpler by adding a function that will allow you to zoom in and out of the icon map just by tapping in the corresponding section or tapping a blank area.

  • Sony XPERIA Z3 Burger on fire! - Some folks are placing a Sony Xperia Z3 inside the patty of a burger and grilling it to test the device's heat resistance. It's a very dangerous experiment as the phone's battery can overheat and explode. But it doesn't explode and the handset also survives the test. In the end, the device's display appears to be working fine. The screen was greasy as it was inside the burger; maybe they can give it a hot bath to remove the fat.

  • Civilization: Beyond Earth Benchmarked - It's not too surprising to see NVIDIA's GTX 980 taking the single GPU performance crown for Beyond Earth, but additional driver tuning may change things a bit. AMD also had a slide showing the R9 290X 8GB edition leading the GTX 980 in performance. Hmmm....The good news is that if you have any reasonably modern GPU - from the GTX 770 and R9 280 (nee HD 7950) - you should be able to run at 1080p and High or even Ultra quality settings. Lesser GPUs can still handle the game as well, and if you're curious it's possible to get frame rates well over 100 FPS even at 1080p if you drop to lower quality settings.
  • Upgrading the SSD in Chromebook & MyDigitalSSD Super Boot Drive M.2 2242 SSD Review - Because Chrome OS is designed for a web/cloud environment, it does not play nice with local storage. While you can technically have some level of file management inside the downloads folder, it is a compromise and the user experience is far from good. There is no proper music player for instance, so you are limited to using the Files app (a Chrome OS take on the Windows Explorer) for song selection, which works but is nowhere near as convenient as using Windows Media Player or iTunes for playback with support for playlists and other common features. The experience just feels incomplete if you are used to using Windows or OS X because of the limited functionality.

  • Windows 10: MKV support out of the box - One item that is new in Windows 10 that was not present in Windows 8.1 is support for MKV files out of the box. For those who do not know, MKV files are a popular format for movies and the addition of this support will likely appease many Windows users. If you want to test out support for MKV on your install, you can download a sample video from Jellyfish. After the file downloads, when you open it up, Windows will ask you what app you want to use to open this type of file with; select Windows Media Player. After you select WMP, a warning will pop up saying that the player does not support this file but if you click 'Yes', the file will then play. This means that Windows 10 does have support for MKV, even if it is early in the implementation, for the file type.
  • Windows 10 Registry Tweak Will Block Future Updates - If you were one of the many brave souls that performed the registry tweak to be able to unlock new preview builds of Windows 10, you are no longer able to receive future build updates unless you re-tweak your registry. Each account has access to ad-free and offline music playback and other Spotify Premium features. The main account still costs $10 per month, but each additional account costs only $5 to add. So a family with five accounts would cost $30 per month. Spotify said the Spotify Family Plan will be rolled out globally over the coming weeks.

  • Samsung reveals the Galaxy S5 Plus - Samsung has launched the Galaxy S5 Plus smartphone, which Forbes calls the "Android world's fastest smartphone," and maybe rightfully so. The refresh is fairly straightforward: replacing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, they've put in Qualcomm's Snapdragon 805 chipset instead-- the same hardware found in the Galaxy Note 4 and Nexus 6. Some of the benefits of the Snapdragon 805 include a significantly improved memory bandwidth, upgraded GPU, and an improved processor. One element worth mentioning, however, is that Samsung has under-clocked the CPU compared to the Note 4. While the Note 4 is clocked at 2.7 Ghz, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Plus is clocked at a slightly lower 2.5 Ghz. Still, given that it is the only true smartphone with the Snapdragon 805 chipset, that makes it the world's most powerful Android smartphone -- for now, anyway. One element that is also improved with the new chipset is the 4G performance: the Snapdragon 805 provides support for "LTE advanced" which doubles bandwidth potential to 300 Mbps downstream transfer.

  • South Korea Prepares for 10Gbps Broadband - 1GB in 0.8 Secs - While AT&T and Verizon argue over an FCC proposal that would set 10Mbps as America's new minimum speed to qualify as "broadband," South Korea is positioning itself to introduce 10Gbps fiber service. SK Broadband will introduce its new 10 gigabit per second Internet service at the Oct. 20 Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunications Union to be held at Busan's BEXCO Center, in partnership with the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the National Information Society Agency. With the latest advances in broadband technology coming mostly from Asian countries like Japan and South Korea, citizens of both countries are proud of the fact they are way ahead of the United States. SK Broadband says its 10Gbps will be 100 times faster than Korea's current average broadband speed of 100Mbps. Downloading a 1GB file takes 80 seconds with Korea's average broadband connection today. SK's new 10Gbps service will download the same file in 0.8 seconds.
  • USC Researchers Track When The Web Sleeps - Researchers at USC say the internet actually sleeps, almost like a living creature.
  • Stephen Hawking Joins Facebook - If you are a fan of Stephen Hawking, you can now follow him on his new Facebook page. He will be sharing his insight into the universe with all to see on his page and it's a sure bet his presence on Facebook will not hurt his upcoming biopic release one little bit. His page has also posted a video of Hawking accepting the Ice Bucket Challenge, with his three children taking the plunge on his behalf. "It would not be wise for me to have a bucket of cold water poured over me," Hawking says. The video is perhaps a fitting start given that Hawking has dealt with motor neuron disease for most of his life. While Hawking joining Facebook is certainly an exciting moment for science enthusiasts, this in part appears to be a marketing move for the upcoming Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything as well. So far there's no promotion for the movie on his page, but publicity for the film is going out of its way to make a note of Hawking's new digital presence. Even if that's the case, Hawking's thoughts are still being made a lot more accessible - his page is already approach 1 million followers after being publicized just six hours ago - and it's hard to take fault with that even if advertising may be responsible for getting the ball rolling.

  • Audi recalls 850,000 A4 models globally for airbags that won't - Audi has announced that it will be recalling 850,000 A4 sedans, wagons and Allroad models across the globe due to a software problem that could prevent the front airbags from deploying. All 850,000 vehicles were built after 2012. Audi has already adjusted production of new A4s to eliminate the software glitch. Meanwhile, the German manufacturer was quick to emphasize that Takata did not manufacture the affected airbags. According to Reuters, 250,000 of the affected A4s were built for the Chinese market, while another 150,000 were sold in Germany. Audi didn't provide a breakdown beyond those two countries, although it'd be a surprise if there weren't at least some affected airbags in the US market.

NVIDIA Turf Effects is a new NVIDIA GameWorks technology which empowers users to simulate and render massive grass simulation with physical interaction. Our grass technology provides a fully geometrical representation. Grass blades can be represented with a resolution as low as 3 triangles to several 100 triangles per blade by using continuous level of detail. This allows millions of grass blades to be simulated.
