TechNews - USB Type-C is here - tech
(hx) 11:12 PM CET - Mar,21 2015 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • USB Type-C: A new standard for power, data and display  - USB Type-C is closely intertwined with other new standards, like USB 3.1 for faster speeds and USB Power Delivery for improved power-delivery over USB connections. USB Type-C is a new connector standard that's very small. It's about a third the size of an old USB Type-A plug. This is a single connector standard that every device should be able to use. You'll just need a single cable, whether you're connecting an external hard drive to your laptop or charging your smartphone from a USB charger. That one tiny connector can be small and fit into a mobile device, or be the powerful port you use to connect all the peripherals to your laptop. The cable itself has USB Type-C connectors at both ends - it's all one connector. Yes, this is many awesome things at once. Not only is it reversible, it's a single USB connector shape all devices should adopt. No more messes of different USB cables with different connector shapes for all the various devices you want, and no more massive ports taking up an unnecessary amount of room on ever-thinner devices. USB Type-C, one port for charging, data and display, now available with the new Chromebook Pixel.
  • The AMD FreeSync Review - The short summary is that FreeSync works just as you'd expect, and at least in our limited testing so far there have been no problems. Which isn’t to say that FreeSync will work with every possible AMD setup right now. As noted last month, the initial FreeSync driver that AMD provided (Catalyst 15.3 Beta 1) only allows FreeSync to work with single GPU configurations. Another driver should be coming next month that will support FreeSync with CrossFire setups.
  • Why Every New Macbook Needs A Different Goddamn Charger - "Hey I have the new macbook, can I borrow your charger?" No. No you can't.
  • Windows 10 launches this summer - Microsoft announced Windows 10, which is not to be confused by the non-existent Window 9, back in September 2014. Today, Microsoft has announced the new operating software will be made available this summer across 190 countries and will be available in 111 languages. The announcement comes from Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive vice president of the Operating Systems group, who didn't offer a specific launch date.
  • Windows 10 Will Even Be Free To Pirates - Terry Myerson, Windows' chief at Microsoft told Reuters in an interview this morning in efforts to break in to the pirate heavy Chinese market, Microsoft is allowing free Windows 10 upgrades to people without legitimate versions of Windows 7 and 8. Myerson claims that their effort is to show the users pirating Windows the value of Windows 10 in hopes that they will buy a legitimate license later down the road or a device with Windows 10 pre-installed. Microsoft obviously does not understand how these things work... or do they? :)
  • Windows 10 Delivers Updates Using Peer-To-Peer Technology - While Microsoft has traditionally uses Windows Update to deliver OS and some application updates from a single source, the latest leaked build of Windows 10 reveals that the company is moving towards P2P. A new option allows Windows 10 users to enable "updates from more than one place," with the ability to download apps and OS updates from multiple sources to obtain them more quickly. Apps and OS updates can be downloaded from Microsoft and PCs on a local network, or a combination of local PCs, internet PCs, and Microsoft's traditional Windows Update servers. It's no surprise that Microsoft is moving towards this distribution model. The software maker acquired Pando Networks in 2013, the maker of a peer-to-peer file sharing technology that's similar to BitTorrent. It's not clear what technology Microsoft is using for its Windows 10 testing, but it's reasonable to expect it has evolved from the Pando Networks acquisition. What do you guys think of Microsoft delivering Windows 10 updates using peer-to-peer technology?
  • Microsoft Adding Biometric Security Support to Windows 10 - Microsoft has said Windows 10 will natively support biometric security measures, such as fingerprints, retina scans, or facial recognition. Microsoft's biometric authentication service is called Windows Hello and it will be available to PCs, tablets, and smartphones. Microsoft believes these measures can be more secure than passwords, as they are truly unique to individual users. Windows Hello can be used to authenticate devices, network access, and app access. Moreover, Microsoft is offering a tool called Passport to developers and IT admins, who will be able to add biometric support to their own apps, sites, and services so users will never have to use a password to log in. Windows 10 is set to debut later this year. Biometric support has been available to Windows devices for a decade or more, but only through third-party hardware and software support. Microsoft's competitors, including Apple, HTC, and Samsung, have added fingerprint scanners to their smartphones in recent years.
  • Fully patched versions of Firefox, Chrome, IE 11 and Safari exploited at Pwn2Own hacking competition - The event, which took place at the CanSecWest conference in Vancouver, was sponsored by the Hewlett-Packard Zero Day Initiative. During the first day, HP awarded $317,500 to researchers that exploited flaws in Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, Internet Explorer and Firefox. eWeek notes that the first reward, paid to a hacker by the name of ilxu1a, was for an out-of-bounds memory vulnerability in Firefox. It took less than a second to execute which earned him a cool $15,000.
  • PlayStation Vue Starts at $50 per Month, Wants to Replace Cable TV - Sony announced the PlayStation Vue television streaming service last year, and on Wednesday the corporation revealed a lot more about the price, rollout plan, and TV channels on offer. Vue is available starting now , but only in a few cities. Starting with New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago, the service will enter other markets at a later, unspecified date. In an interview with GameSpot, Sony Network Entertainment vice president Eric Lempel said that he wants to get the service running in the rest of the US soon.

Clearly and without a doubt, the GeForce GTX Titan X is now the world's fastest, single-GPU graphics card for PC gaming. With a combination of 3072 CUDA cores, 12GB of memory and impressive efficiency, the Titan X will be able to handle any game at 2560x1440, 3440x1440 and is clearly the best option for 4K gaming on a single GPU. Compare this new flagship product to NVIDIA's own GTX 980, our performance increases range from 25-50% with a good average floating in the 30-35% range, especially in those pixel dense 4K scores. That is a pretty wide delta for real-world gaming results though I imagine many of our readers expected a bit more when you saw the specifications increase by 50% across the board. But keep in mind that the clock speed of the GM200 GPU in this case is running 10-12% lower (at stock) than the GM204 used in the GTX 980, so that explains a lack of perfect scaling.

AMD's competition has two different options. First, the Radeon R9 290X based on the aging Hawaii GPU is, on average, 40-45% slower than the new GTX Titan X card. We actually measured a couple of 50%+ differences (Bioshock Infinite at 4K, Unigine Heaven) as well, giving NVIDIA's new flagship GPU a measurable, and sizeable, advantage over the best single GPU that AMD can offer.

The R9 295X2 is interesting as well - by combining two of those Hawaii GPUs on a single, very power hungry graphics card, AMD can still make the claim of the fastest graphics card. In our testing, the 295X2 produces average frame rates around 25-30% faster than the GTX Titan X. But of course that comes with all the complications associated with multi-GPU system and gaming. You have to worry about CrossFire profile updates for newer games (which are admittedly slower to appear than with NVIDIA's drivers) and you need to be concerned with frame time consistency and the ability for two GPUs to run as smoothly as possible. AMD has done a lot of work in the last two years to help improve the CrossFire experience in this area, but it will never be perfect and we saw several instances of higher frame time variance (Battlefield 4, Metro: Last Light).

Also, take note that, for gaming today, 12GB of memory is decidedly overkill. You might be able to use as much as 6-7GB based on what NVIDIA's testing has shown before the Titan X release, and they claim this makes the GPU extra "future proof" but really...12GB is just a bragging point!

Obviously the one caveat to this is that price tag - $999 is a lot to spend on a GPU that offers "only" 35% better gaming performance than the $550 GTX 980. But, much like the Intel Extreme Edition processors that continue to be released, refreshed and sold, the market proves that these parts sell enough to warrant the cost.

The new MacBook is being marketed as the thinnest and lightest Mac ever. The 12-inch notebook weighs just two pounds and is incredibly thin at just 13.1mm. The star of the show though, is no doubt the 12-inch Retina display. The Retina panel comes with a resolution of 2304 x 1440, giving it a pixel density of 226 PPI. The display is the thinnest display Apple has ever used on a notebook and is also claimed to be highly efficient with a claimed 30 percent lower power consumption than Retina displays on the MacBook Pro models.

  • Unindexed - An online community that deletes itself - Unindexed is an online community that anyone can contribute to; it runs a back-end process that continuously scours Google for signs that it has been indexed, and securely erases itself once it discovers evidence of same. It's a cute art project (as opposed to a cute engineering project, which would have just used a robots.txt file to stop Google from indexing it altogether), and apparently included some kind of artistic statement of purpose that was nuked, along with the rest of the site, when Google indexed it 22 days in.

While it is still making the rounds on the internet, a new version of the malware has surfaced, and it is reportedly targeting gamers. According to a report by Bromium Labs, the new variant of the Cryptolocker ransomware, which goes by the name TeslaCrypt, aims to extort money from gamers by making them pay to unlock game files which they already own. The malware apparently impacts data files of over 20 games, and is distributed through a drive-by download attack from a website which then redirects an unknowing user to the Angler exploit kit by utilizing a Flash clip. The compromised website is purportedly running under WordPress, where a malware attack has also been hosted before. The malware targets 185 file extensions, and encrypts game saves, maps, mods, replays, and other user-generated game content, which cannot be retrieved if a game is reinstalled. The list of games that are affected by the malware program includes Call of Duty, StarCraft, Diablo, Fallout, Minecraft, Assassin's Creed, Half Life 2, and Bioshock 2, among others. Digital game distribution platform Steam is allegedly targeted, as well as game development software such as RPG Maker, Unity3D, and Unreal Engine.

  • MediaTek to Brand Processors Under 'Helio' Name - MediaTek is slowly introducing a new brand name for its mobile processors. Moving forward most of its smartphone and tablet chips will be branded under the name Helio. The company showed off the first two such processors this week, the Heiio X and Helio P series. The Helio X is being marketed as an "extreme performance" chip targeted at flagship multimedia devices. The Helio P is being marketed as a "premium performance" chip meant to deliver solid computing power but also excellent battery life. Think of Helio to MediaTek as Snapdragon is to Qualcomm. MediaTek will have more to say about the Helio brand and lineup later this year.
  • HyperX Releases FURY DDR4 Memory - HyperX FURY DDR4 is the first product line to offer automatic overclocking via plug-and-play functionality for the next generation of high-end desktops featuring the Intel X99 chipset and Haswell-E processors. HyperX FURY DDR4 is available in 2133MHz, 2400MHz and 2666MHz frequencies, and in various kits configurations from 8GB to 64GB. HyperX FURY DDR4 memory is a cost-efficient high-performance upgrade for Intel 6- and 8-core processors and helps to provide faster video editing, 3D rendering, gaming and AI processing. It takes full advantage of the power efficiency of DDR4 with low 1.2V settings.
  • Using a SSD? This news will make you want to backup right now - A technology use survey conducted by Kroll Ontrack reported that a third of global respondents have experienced a technology malfunction with an SSD and of that number 61 per cent lost data as a result of the problem. It gets worse as under 20 per cent of those affected by data loss were able to recover any of it and backs up the fact that SSD data recovery can be very tricky. In the UK the numbers were similar with 27 per cent experiencing faults with SSDs, 56 per cent reporting data losses, and 26 per cent were able to recover any data. The same survey shows that almost 90 per cent are enjoying the reliability and performance that SSD drives bring with 75 per cent of those surveyed plumping for fast data access when asked why they started to adopt SSDs. Meanwhile, just 10 per cent gave reliability and energy saving properties as a reason for rolling out the faster drives to their organisation's systems thus glossing over one benefit beyond simply the advantage of the drives being super-fast.
  • Samsung's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Tout Metal and Glass Designs - Samsung today announced the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, two Android smartphones that marry high-quality design with leading specs. The devices are made with a mix of metal and glass materials, with the GS6 Edge offering a curved display on two sides. According to Samsung, the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and comes in several jewel tones with names like black sapphire, white pearl, blue topaz, and gold platinum
  • Windows PCs are also vulnerable to FREAK flaw - The FREAK flaw that first surfaced early this week was initially only thought to affect software that relied on OpenSSL or Apple's Secure Transport (think Android, iOS and OS X). Microsoft has since released a security advisory indicating its Windows operating system is also vulnerable. The Redmond-based company noted that it is aware of a security feature bypass vulnerability in Secure Channel (Schannel) that affects all supported releases of Microsoft Windows. An investigation has verified that the vulnerability could allow an attacker to force the downgrading of the cipher suite used during an SSL / TLS connection. As outlined earlier this week, the FREAK flaw allows an attacker to request what's called an export cipher. This 512-bit encryption key is very weak by today's standards and can be cracked in roughly half a day for around $100 using Amazon Web services.
  • uTorrent may be using your CPU to mine bitcoin - There's no honor amongst thieves. At least, that's the perception given off with the latest version of the bittorrent client uTorrent, which is a bittorrent client used for download files, many files of which can be of the pirated variety. uTorrent recently had an update to the platform released. Within the latest update lies a little secret that many users of the application are likely completely unaware of, and that secret is using your computing resources for its own personal gains.
  • Google Overhauls Google Contacts - Google has completely redesigned Google Contacts, the contact-management tool associated with Gmail. The online app has a brand new look and feel that brings it inline with many of Google's existing services. One of the main improvements is the ability to better manage duplicate contacts. Google said it can now keep information up-to-date by blending users' data with its own Google profile data. Google Contacts now also shows the most recent emails and meetings users may have had with specific contacts so they can review their last few messages. Google is offering the new Google Contacts as a preview online. Google didn't say if or how the new Google Contacts service will affect Android's contact application.
  • Spartan will be in the next Windows 10 preview release - Microsoft has been working on a new browser that they currently call Project Spartan. While the name has not been finalized, this new browser represents a break from Internet Explorer and has many new features too. At Mobile World Congress today, Microsoft confirmed that Spartan will be included in the next preview release of Windows 10. Many were hoping that Microsoft would have released a build in February but alas, it is now March which means that the last release came in late January. Spartan is a modernized browser, meaning it does away with a plethora of legacy code that is included in Internet Explorer; this means that it should run faster and use less resources. Along with new features like support for inking and reading mode, Spartan is Microsoft's future web browser
  • Cortana and Spartan integration shown off on video - Microsoft's project Spartan has been caught on video and it shows off the Cortana integration that is coming to the browser.

  • Harrison Ford "battered but OK" after plane crash - Harrison Ford was "battered but OK" Thursday after his vintage World War II training plane lost engine power and crash-landed on a California golf course, authorities and family members said. The 72-year-old actor, who was conscious and breathing when rescue crews reached him, was stabilized and taken to a hospital, where he was in fair to moderate condition, authorities said. Sources familiar with the incident told NBC News that Ford slammed into the plane's console and control stick and that he underwent surgery Thursday night. • Guy has a seizure while skydiving - All students are required to jump with an AAD (automatic activation device). These are little computers that continuously sense speed and altitude. If you cross the speed threshold (i think its like 37 mph on student setting and 79 mph on advanced at X altitude (2500 feet on student I believe) it fires a charge cutting the reserve parachute closing loop resulting in a reserve deployment. That instructor is a bad ass. If he hasn't been a bad ass the students AAD would have (hopefully) fired the reserve parachute. It gets a little more dicey in that situation, because in an emergency every foot of altitude is precious.

Homeworld Remastered-Graphics&CPU Performance - tech
(hx) 06:25 PM CET - Mar,05 2015 - Post a comment
The chaps over at TechSpot have posted Homeworld Remastered Collection Graphics & CPU Performance. Here's an excerpt:
If you're happy to play with acceptable frames most of the time but can tolerate a slideshow of a battle, then you should be fine to run Homeworld Remastered with relatively low-end hardware such as the GTX 750 Ti or HD 7850. However, if you want smooth performance through sizeable battles, we recommend a R9 280X or GTX 770.

Ideally, you'll want a processor with four threads. It was interesting to see the Core i7-5960X, 4960X and 3930K perform so well. These processors feature a 20MB, 15MB and 12MB L3 cache, so perhaps this was the key to the extra performance over the 8MB L3 cache i7-4770K. Unsurprisngly, we also recommend Intel over AMD here.

Unfortunately, the FX range took a beating in Homeworld Remastered, though we think this is because the game doesn't heavily utilize more than two cores. This is an old game that hasn't been designed or optimized for more than four threads and that's bad news for AMD gamers. A Core i3 or i5 will deliver the best bang for your buck.

  • Intel NUC5i5RYK Review: A Broadwell-U UCFF PC for Enthusiasts - The migration from 22nm to 14nm has allowed for higher base clocks while maintaining the same power envelop. The performance delta over the Haswell-U-based D54250WYKH (particularly, on the graphics side) is noticeable. That said, while migrating from Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge is a no-brainer, there is not enough on offer to recommend migrating from a Haswell-based UCFF PC.

  • Synology DS2015xs Review: An ARM-based 10G NAS - Compared to the last 10G desktop NAS (based on an Intel Xeon platform), the power consumption is much lower At $1400, the DS2015xs is affordably priced, considering the 10G features built into it. DSM's business-oriented features (very important for the DS2015xs's target market) are stable and industry-leading. The presence of dual 10G ports and eight native SATA III ports might delude consumers into thinking that they are purchasing a Ferrari. Unfortunately, consumers only get a souped up Volkswagen engine inside. That said, with tempered expectations, the $1400 Synology DS2015xs can fulfill the role of a cost-effective power-efficient high performance NAS.
  • Mac OS X and iOS top 2014 security vulnerability list - Apple's operating systems saw an increase in security vulnerabilities in 2014 and because of their severity, caused OS X and iOS to top the charts for 2014. However, for the past few years, Microsoft has been taking security of its OS seriously and has released timely patches to protect users from threats; effectively dropping out of the top 3 vulnerable OSes list

  • Samsung Shows Off 128GB Embedded Flash Module - Samsung today announced that it is producing embedded memory modules for flagship smartphones using the new Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard. UFS is a generational leap compared to the eMMC standard, which is used widely in mobile devices today. The UFS standard uses a serial interface rather than an 8-bit interface common to eMMC modules, which helps produce speed gains. Samsung claims its UFS-based storage offers significantly faster read/write speeds compared to eMMC, while still delivering a 50% reduction in energy needs. Further, the ePoP (embedded package on package) solution can be stacked directly onto the logic board, reducing space requirements by 50%. The UFS chips can support 4K (Ultra HD) video playback while performing other tasks. Samsung is manufacturing 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB varieties of the module. Samsung imagines the new UFS memory modules will be ideal for flagship smartphones and tablets. It will continue to use eMMC-based memory products for mid-range and entry-level phones

  • Hack gave U.S. and British spies access to billions of phones - U.S. and British spies hacked into the world's biggest maker of phone SIM cards, allowing them to potentially monitor the calls, texts and emails of billions of mobile users around the world, an investigative news website reported. The alleged hack on Gemalto (GTO.AS), if confirmed, would expand the scope of known mass surveillance methods available to U.S. and British spy agencies to include not just email and web traffic, as previously revealed, but also mobile communications. The Franco-Dutch company said on Friday it was investigating whether the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and Britain's GCHQ had hacked into its systems to steal encryption keys that could unlock the security settings on billions of mobile phones. The report by The Intercept site, which cites documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, could prove an embarrassment for the U.S. and British governments. It opens a fresh front in the dispute between civil liberties campaigners and intelligence services which say their citizens face a grave threat of attack from militant groups like Islamic State. It comes just weeks after a British tribunal ruled that GCHQ had acted unlawfully in accessing data on millions of people in Britain that had been collected by the NSA.
  • Lenovo.com appears to be hacked by Lizard Squad - Lenovo.com has been hacked. As of 4PM ET, users visiting the site saw a slideshow of disaffected youths, set to the song "Breaking Free" from High School Musical. By 4:17, the site seemed to have reverted to its normal self, although HTML problems persist and in some instances, the song continued to play in the background. The hacked version has reappeared intermittently as cached versions work through the system. The source code for the hacked page identified it as, "the new and improved rebranded Lenovo website featuring Ryan King and Rory Andrew Godfrey," both of whom have been publicly identified as members of the hacker collective Lizard Squad. It's unclear whether King and Godfrey are actually related to the hack, or if the attackers are simply using their names and photos to muddle their true identity. The attackers seem to have hijacked Lenovo's domain record, an attack that would have given them the power to redirect the lenovo.com url to a new server under their control. The attack targets entirely external infrastructure, similar to the Syrian Electronic Army's attacks against Twitter and The New York Times in 2013. As a result, there's no reason to believe the attackers have breached Lenovo's internal network.
  • Simple iframe attack compromises SOHO routers - The end users who clicked the link in the phishing e-mail were sent to a website with malicious code contained within a hidden iframe. The malicious code uses nothing more than HTML to attempt to log into the router and change the DNS settings. NVIDIA Issues Statement Regarding GTX 970 - tech
(hx) 09:04 PM CET - Feb,24 2015 - Post a comment / read (4)
NVIDIA's co-founder Jen-Hsun Huang has issued a statement regarding the infamous VRAM reports surrounding the GeForce GTX 970. Je-Hsun Huang admitted that this memory architecture was created so that reduced-configurations of Maxwell can have a larger framebuffer (otherwise the GTX970 would come with 3GB of VRAM) and that the upper 512MB of the additional 1GB is segmented and has reduced bandwidth.
Hey everyone,

Some of you are disappointed that we didn’t clearly describe the segmented memory of GeForce GTX 970 when we launched it. I can see why, so let me address it.

We invented a new memory architecture in Maxwell. This new capability was created so that reduced-configurations of Maxwell can have a larger framebuffer – i.e., so that GTX 970 is not limited to 3GB, and can have an additional 1GB.

GTX 970 is a 4GB card. However, the upper 512MB of the additional 1GB is segmented and has reduced bandwidth. This is a good design because we were able to add an additional 1GB for GTX 970 and our software engineers can keep less frequently used data in the 512MB segment.

Unfortunately, we failed to communicate this internally to our marketing team, and externally to reviewers at launch.

Since then, Jonah Alben, our senior vice president of hardware engineering, provided a technical description of the design, which was captured well by several editors. Here's one example from The Tech Report.

Instead of being excited that we invented a way to increase memory of the GTX 970 from 3GB to 4GB, some were disappointed that we didn't better describe the segmented nature of the architecture for that last 1GB of memory.

This is understandable. But, let me be clear: Our only intention was to create the best GPU for you. We wanted GTX 970 to have 4GB of memory, as games are using more memory than ever.

The 4GB of memory on GTX 970 is used and useful to achieve the performance you are enjoying. And as ever, our engineers will continue to enhance game performance that you can regularly download using GeForce Experience.

This new feature of Maxwell should have been clearly detailed from the beginning.

We won’t let this happen again. We'll do a better job next time

  • MS will give you 100 GB of OneDrive storage if you have a Dropbox - Microsoft is targeting Dropbox in its latest free storage giveaway by hanging a 100 GB carrot in front of Dropbox users. If you have a Dropbox account, Microsoft will boost your storage by simply clicking the link at the bottom of this post. To redeem the offer, you will have to verify that you do have a Dropbox account by saving a document to the service. Microsoft makes this process quite easy and it only takes about 10 seconds to grab that 100 GB of additional storage for one year. Microsoft has been giving away a lot of free storage recently with the company offering up 100 GB of storage through Bing, but this campaign is specifically targeted at a competitor. For those of you who have both services, this is an easy way to boost your OneDrive storage with only a few mouse clicks.

The company will be releasing the OS later this year and it looks like June is the target. While Windows 10 is not mentioned by name, the advertisement does refer to building a new OS.
  • Microsoft OneNote is now completely free on PC and Mac - The OneNote free edition, while it was popular and seen as a step in the right direction, still heard some criticism for not being completely free. That is, some features of the software were still restricted to the paid versions. Fortunately, however, it has recently been announced that the full version of the software will be going free on both the PC and the Mac without any restrictions.
  • iPhone Users Can Now Store Office Documents In iCloud - Microsoft has announced several new features for its Office suite of productivity apps. First and foremost, third-party cloud providers can now integrate their own services into the "locations picker" in the iOS Office apps. This means mobile device users can open, edit, and save their documents to any cloud service. Apple's iCloud is the first to receive this support, so iPhone and iPad users can store their mobile Office documents in iCloud. Microsoft said it plans to bring this feature to the Windows and Android versions of Office soon. Further, Microsoft is making it possible for cloud storage providers to weave Office Online into their own mobile applications. Microsoft's vision here is to let people open, view, and edit their online documents from any browser on any device. Microsoft said Box, Citrix, and Salesforce are already working on this level of integration. Microsoft has dramatically increased the availability of Office to mobile devices in recent months with the hopes that people and businesses will continue to use its productivity suite rather than competing products from Apple and Google.
  • Apple Opening iOS 8.3, iOS 9 Betas to Public - Starting in mid-March, iPhone owners will be able to install the beta version of iOS 8.3. Apple's hope with the public beta release is that more eyes on the developing build will help eliminate more bugs throughout the process. The public build is also the third iOS 8.3 beta build for developers, so the general public can see the same features as the developers. Just like in the OS X beta program, users will also have an app that allows them to send feedback about the beta back to Apple.
  • Samsung acquires Apple Pay competitor LoopPay - Following reports of a potential acquisition last year, LoopPay, makers of a popular mobile payments service and one of ApplePay's largest competitors, has officially been acquired by Samsung. Like ApplePay and other mobile payments companies, LoopPay provides an alternative to existing magnetic swipe readers and POS machines in retail stores, which have proven to be a huge safety risk for millions of customers. Their products allow shoppers to process payments without ever swiping a card, and LoopPay says its products -- which include a key fob and the CardCase -- work at 90 percent of existing retailers.
  • Sprint Now Offering 12GB Share Plan for $90 - Sprint has announced a new option within its range of Family Share Pack plans. Tablets cost $10 per line and mobile broadband devices cost $20 per line. Sprint is also still offering to pay the ETFs for customers who break their contract to switch to Sprint (up to $350 per line, four lines max). All devices must be purchased through Sprint Easy Pay or the Sprint iPhone for Life Plan.
  • NSA hid spying software in hard drive firmware, report says - The U.S. National Security Agency has figured out how to hide spying software deep within hard drives made by Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba and other top manufacturers, giving the agency the means to eavesdrop on the majority of the world's computers, according to cyber researchers and former operatives. That long-sought and closely guarded ability was part of a cluster of spying programs discovered by Kaspersky Lab, the Moscow-based security software maker that has exposed a series of Western cyberespionage operations. Kaspersky said it found personal computers in 30 countries infected with one or more of the spying programs, with the most infections seen in Iran, followed by Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Mali, Syria, Yemen and Algeria. The targets included government and military institutions, telecommunication companies, banks, energy companies, nuclear researchers, media, and Islamic activists, Kaspersky said. Kaspersky published the technical details of its research on Monday, which should help infected institutions detect the spying programs, some of which trace back as far as 2001.
  • Malware Is Still Spying On You Even When Your Mobile Is Off - Most of us have seen Hollywood movies where hackers trace and spy on mobile devices even though they are switched off. Like most things in spy movies, we disregard it as fiction. However, the AVG mobile security team recently discovered malware that may challenge this preconception. The malware hijacks the shutdown process and the device remains functional even though it appears to be off. First seen in China, the malware spreads through Chinese app stores with around 10,000 devices infected so far. The malware affects versions of Android older than v.5 (Lollipop) and requires root permission to hijack the shut down process. After pressing the power button, the phone displays an authentic shutdown animation, and the phone appears off. Although the screen is black, it is still on. While the phone is in this state, the malware can make outgoing calls, take pictures and perform many other tasks without notifying you.

  • Steam machines to make an appearance at GDC next month - According to Polygon, Valve's Doug Lombardi has confirmed that Steam machines will appear at this year's Game Developers Conference, which is scheduled to kick off on March 2 in San Francisco. The living-room-oriented gaming systems have been missing in action since last May, when Valve pushed their rollout from the original mid-2014 time frame into 2015.
  • Microsoft reportedly buys N-trig, the company behind Surface Pro 3 - Microsoft is buying N-trig, the company behind the digital pen technology that ships with the Surface Pro 3. The deal is reportedly valued at more than $200 million. Microsoft is seemingly doubling down on touch screen pen technologies, the type that it started shipping alongside the Surface line of devices. N-trig's technology was in fact the one used in the Surface Pro 3, to offer customers a special writing experience with OneNote on the device. The N-trig team will reportedly be integrated into Microsoft, and it will be part of a new research and development center.
  • Want to test out Office 2016? - Microsoft has a private Office 2016 beat group who have access to the next version of Office, and if you feel bummed that you were not included in the group, there is now a way to download the bits. If you head to this link, you can now sign up for the Office 2016 preview and download the bits right now. After signing the NDA, you will be taken to a dashboard where you can download the January technical preview of Office 2016. During the sign-up process, it will ask you to enter the email address where you received the invitation to join the program but if you enter any email address, you are automatically accepted into the program. We are not sure if this is a bug, as it would appear that they do try to authenticate the email to the user before offering access, or simply a backwards way to reach the open beta, either way, it allows anyone to download the pre-release software.
  • Microsoft is giving away 100GB of OneDrive storage for free for 2 years - If you find yourself wishing you had a bit more storage space, or simply like free things, Microsoft is giving away 100GB of storage for two years through Bing Rewards. • OS Apps Can Now Be As Big As 4 GB - Apple has increased the maximum size of applications allowed in the iOS App Store from 2 GB to 4 GB. Apple says this should allow developers to "include more media in [their] submission and provide a more complete, rich user experience upon installation." The majority of apps fall well under 100MB in size, but games increasingly need more storage. Developers were getting around the size limitation by requiring additional downloads after the app was installed. Apple hopes the increased size limit will negate the need for developers to side-step its limitations. Apple warns, however, that this doesn't change the maximum size of apps that can be downloaded via cellular networks, which is still 100MB.
  • Apple is building an electric car - Apple has hundreds of employees working on secret electric car project that's aimed at competing with Tesla and other EV manufacturers. The news comes from the Wall Street Journal, which has a pretty solid track record when it comes to Apple rumors. According to the report, that cites people familiar with the matter, Tim Cook approved the project about a year ago. The project is codenamed "Titan" and right now the team is working on a minivan-type vehicle, as well as investigating materials and designs consistent with car manufacturing. Apple is also in talks with other high-end car manufacturers. To add further fuel to fire, in the past year Apple has hired a number of designers and engineers that have previous experience with automotive engineering. Meanwhile the "Titan" team is reportedly led by VP Steve Zadesky, a former Ford engineer.
  • Will Apple patent see car keys replaced by your iPhone? - The traditional, metal car key has been rapidly falling by the wayside in recent years. Where the devices used to be vital for opening a vehicle's doors and getting the engine started, today the latest models have replaced that simplicity with an electronic gadget for owners to keep in their pocket. The next step could even make that obsolete and move control to a person's smartphone, at least if Apple does anything with a recently filed patent.
  • AT&T Debuts 7GB Mobile Share Plan with Rollover Data - AT&T today added a new option to its Mobile Share Value plans that offers 7GB of shareable data for a base charge of $75 per month. The plan includes unlimited talk, text, and Rollover Data. AT&T said customers who buy a new smartphone with its AT&T Next program and pair it with the new 7GB Mobile Share Value plan will pay a device access fee of $15 per month. For example, customers who select the 7GB Mobile Share Value Plan and add three smartphones though AT&t Next can expect to pay $120 per month ($75 plan charge plus $45 device access fees). This doesn't include the cost of the device itself, which varies depending on the handset in question. AT&T said it is still offering a $100 bill credit to people who switch from another carrier. The new 7GB Mobile Share Value plan will be available to new and existing customers beginning Feb. 15.
  • Galaxy S6 release date, specs and price - If last year's Galaxy S5 launch is anything to go by, the S6 will go on sale a month or two later. The Galaxy S5 launched in February before arriving on shelves on 11 April. However, a report at PhoneArena claims that the Galaxy S6 will see a much prompter release than its predecessor, having heard from a Samsung employee that it likely will go on sale on 22 March. There's no word yet regarding how much the Galaxy S6 will cost at launch. However, I would assume that it will be priced similarly to last year's model, which Samsung offered from £579 SIM-free. The display is expected to have a higher resolution than the Galaxy S5, which featured a 1,920x1,080 Full HD display. It's likely that Samsung will look to challenge the likes of the Nexus 6 and LG G3 with a QHD 2,560x1,440 screen resolution. Much like the Galaxy S5, this display will be paired with a fingerprint scanner. However, rather than the swipe-based offering on the Galaxy S5, Sammobile claims that Samsung will opt for a touch-based sensor, similar to that found on the iPhone 6. With a February launch on the cards, it's also likely that the Samsung Galaxy S6 will arrive running Google's Android 5.0 operating system.

  • Facebook Allowing Users to Designate Legacy Contact - Facebook today added a tool allowing people to name a family member or friend who will be able to manage their account if/when they pass away. Legacy contacts will be permitted limited access to a deceased user's account. For example, they'll be able to post information about memorial services, respond to friend requests from people not connected with the deceased before the time of their passing, and update the profile and cover photos. Users can give the legacy contact permission to download posts and photos for archival purposes. Users can also choose to have their accounts permanently deleted. Legacy contacts will not be able to log in as the user, change the account settings, or see private messages. This feature is being rolled out to the U.S. first. The latest findings from Gemalto, an enterprise security firm, represent a significant year-over-year increase in both corporate breaches and data theft. Data breaches were up by 49 percent, while the theft or loss of data records were up by 78 percent on the year prior. The motives, according to the report, were identity theft-related, rather than a financial motivation. The kinds of attacks that go after personal information, like credit cards and Social Security addresses, made up one-third of the most severe cases of breaches, a ranking based on the firm's threat level index.

6-Way GeForce GTX 960 Shootout - tech
(hx) 09:08 PM CET - Feb,13 2015 - Post a comment
The chaps over at Legion Hardware have posted a 6-way GeForce GTX 960 shootoutthat you guys just might be interested in. Here's a taster:
The Gigabyte GTX 960 WF2 is a sensible option at just 245mm long. It will fit into most cases with room to spare, offers exceptional thermal performance and looks great.

Gainward;s GTX 960 Phantom comes well clocked out of the box, though its thermal performance wasn't overly impressive considering it is a rather long triple slot card and it's light on DisplayPort's. Although we are a fan of the Phantom graphics cards, the GTX 960 model we feel is outclassed by the competition.

The Zotac GTX 960 AMP Edition is a much more compact graphics card, and at just 203mm it is by far the shortest in our roundup. Unfortunately it also provided by far the worst thermal performance, hitting 80 degrees. The problem we have with the GTX 960 AMP Edition is that there are more compact GTX 960 graphics cards, such as the Gigabyte N960IXOC-2GD which measures just 170mm long, that offer similar cooling performance.

Without a doubt the MSI GTX 960 Gaming 2G is the most unique looking GTX 960 graphics card featured in our roundup. MSI's entrant performed well across the board offering solid overclocking results and exceptional cooling performance, making it one of our preferred options.

Lastly we have the long winded Evga GTX 960 Super SuperClocked ACX 2.0+, that's not a typo either there really are two 'supers'. The GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0+ puzzled us with its unusually low power consumption, though despite that it was our best overclocker. In spite of letting the marketing department run wild with the name, Evga has for the most part designed a no fuss GTX 960. It isn't particularly exciting to look at, but it performs well and runs relatively cool.

When push comes to shove we are going to take the MSI GTX 960 Gaming 2G, it's a bad arse looking graphics card that backs it up with unbeatable thermal performance. The Gigabyte GTX 960 G1 Gaming also impressed us, though the WindForce X2 is probably a smarter option. Then we have the Evga GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0+ which was also very good.

GeForce Game Ready 347.52 WHQL Driver - tech
(hx) 10:01 PM CET - Feb,10 2015 - Post a comment
Nvidia has released the latest 'Game Ready' drivers for GeForce GPUs - the 347.52 WHQL Driver - which promises to be "Game Ready For Evolve", the new 4 vs. 1 shooter from developer Turtle Rock.

The 'Game Ready' releases typically contain "performance optimisations, tweaks, and profiles" for various titles, mostly new releases. Dying Light's SLI profile has been updated. That's hopefully going to make some tangible differences to Techland's open-world-ish zombie slayer, as until now the SLI performance for Dying Light has been woeful with barely any gain. This may also have something to do with a CPU bottleneck.

There's also no mention of an update to Dragon Age: Inquisition's SLI profile, which for the moment is plagued with flickering textures and a blinding white fog at certain points in the RPG. Nvidia and Turtle Rock will be adding GameWorks technologies in a later update, says the GPU maker, adding "to the graphically-advanced action game, further improving graphical fidelity."

Star Swarm - GeForce GTX 980 - Direct3D 12 - tech
(hx) 05:29 PM CET - Feb,08 2015 - Post a comment / read (1)
Anandtech received a copy of the upcoming version of the Star Swarm Benchmark, a massive space combat demo developed by Oxide Games using their own Nitrous Engine, and has put the new API to the test. The Star Swarm demo was originally built to showcase AMD's Mantle API, but the current version has been modified to include support for DirectX 12, and is designed to seriously push the limits with its ability to make over 100K draw calls. The scene rendered in the video below is very complex, with thousands of units and effects, but that doesn't seem to affect frame rate:

Anandtech has conducted the tests using Nvidia's GTX 980, GTX 750 Ti, and GTX 680, as well as AMD's R9 290X, R9 285, and R9 260X graphics cards, using pre-release WDDM 2.0 drivers provided by the two companies. The results show that even in this early stage, DirectX 12 delivers on its promise to offer much higher performance than its predecessor.

The CEO of StarDock - Brad Wardell claims that DX12 is able to handle 600K draw calls. In contrast, DX9 is able to push only 6K draw calls so that's a huge increase. However, Wardell did not reveal the 'draw calls' limit of DX11. Moreover, Wardell claimed that DX12 can offer up to 600% better performance on AMD cards than DX11. This claim is based on Anandtech's benchmarks, in which Oxide's Star Swarm Tech Demo ran with 7fps via DX11 on a Raden R9 290X and with 43fps via DX12. For comparison purposes, the tech demo ran with 41fps via Mantle, proving that DX12 may actually be faster than AMD’s own low-level API.

  • Next release of Windows Server won't coincide with Windows 10 - Microsoft may be targeting a late 2015 launch for Windows 10, but the next Windows Server release will not happen until 2016. Since the time of Windows Vista, Microsoft has been launching the Server variant of Windows alongside the normal version. However, this time the release of the next Windows Server OS won't coincide with that of Windows 10. Microsoft announced on its Technet blog that they would be releasing previews of the next Server OS throughout 2015 and release the final bits in 2016. The preview of Windows 10, on the other hand is expected to end in April, with a release planned for late 2015. The blog post has also revealed that the next version of System Center Configuration Manager for Windows 10 will be launched in the same timeframe as Windows, in order to enable the special update system that was announced earlier.
  • Is Microsoft ignoring the desktop again? - Vista -> Win 7 - huge architectural changes, lots of improvement to file system, kernel, lower layers, changes to Explorer, desktop.
,br> Win 7 -> Win 8 - again major changes (even if you ignore Metro), new task manager, kernel hibernation, File history, MS account
,br> But so far, everything about Windows 10 is focused on Continuum, mobile etc. The only new thing on the desktop is the revamped start menu and virtual desktops, Cortana. It's the same desktop, same Explorer, same internals, just a few color and icon tweaks. There has been no information about what's actually new underneath or how its better. It's now been 2 public announcements and they haven't talked about a single engineering feature except DX12.

  • Facebook Tag Scams are Back with Malicious Payload - It seems that scams and hoaxes really are part of a typical Facebook day. After previous reports of a privacy notice post hoax spreading on the social networking website, another type of scamming act is currently making the website's rounds, where it has been reported that at least 5,000 computers have been infected with a backdoor trojan. Bogdan Botezatu of HotforSecurity reports that cyber criminals have created a malicious tagging scam, that starts with an alleged "video," in which 20 friends are tagged in. Looking at the "video" in the Facebook post, it displays a goo.gl host, which is a URL shortening service, and not a video hosting website, which makes the post very suspicious.  The webpage where users are redirected to reportedly does a thorough scan of the victim's system. The page is apparently device-agnostic, and can serve malware to various devices like Android phones, PC's, PlayStation consoles, TV sets, smart cars, and media players.
  • Microsoft pushes the open source door a little wider with .NET - Microsoft has been pushing the open source message for many months now, and today the company announced a few updates to this initiative. The Redmond-based company has taken the next step in completely open-sourcing the full .NET Core server side stack by releasing the source code for the .NET Core Common Language Runtime (CLR). This release includes the full CoreCLR, which is the "execution engine" for .NET Core, including RyuJIT, the .NET GC, native interop and many other .NET runtime components. When you run ASP.NET 5 apps on top of .NET Core, CoreCLR is the component that is responsible for executing your code, in addition to the CoreFX/BCL libraries that you depend on. Microsoft says that there will be several additional milestones as they work to open source and cross-platform the .NET runtime and server-side stack. In addition to the open source announcements, Microsoft will also be hosting a virtual .NET conference on March 18th and 19th where developers can expect to hear more about .NET Core.

Despite a tow rating of just over 11,000 pounds, the four-wheel-drive, turbocharged pickup managed to dislodge the big rig from a snow-covered street. • Windows 10 Build 9926: Where's Windows Update? - Windows 10 is going to be different as are all new operation systems, but nothing on the scale of Windows 8. There will be a UI learning curve, but if you take in the new features in small bites, it will all fall into place long before the OS is released. This installment we are going to play Finding Windows Update and Where the hell is the Control Panel? :D Microsoft has started the push to finalize the Windows 10 interface. Get used to it. By the time Windows 10 is ready to publicly release, Control Panel should be retired completely. Windows Update has now been removed completely from the old-style Control Panel and found a new home inside the new, streamlined Windows Settings applet. The "new" update needs work. As is, there is no granular control of the updates i.e. there's no way to refuse updates on an individual basis :(
  • Windows 10 for Enterprise is not free in the first year - According to Microsoft's latest blog post, the company's free Windows 10 upgrade offer won't cover the Enterprise version of the OS which is provided to software assurance customers. It has also been revealed that updates would be delivered to Enterprise customers differently as well. Microsoft will maintain two branches for such customers, one being the Long Term Servicing Branch and the other would be the Current Branch for Business.
  • Critical Linux Security Hole Is Discovered - Researchers at cloud security company Qualys have discovered a major security hole, GHOST (CVE-2015-0235), in the Linux GNU C Library (glbibc). This vulnerability enables hackers to remotely take control of systems without even knowing any system IDs or passwords. Qualys alerted the major Linux distributors about the security hole quickly and most have now released patches for it. Josh Bressers, manager of the Red Hat product security team said in an interview that, "Red Hat got word of this about a week ago. Updates to fix GHOST on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, 6, and 7 are now available via the Red Hat Network." This hole exists in any Linux system that was built with glibc-2.2, which was released on November 10, 2000. Qualys found that the bug had actually been patched with a minor bug fix released on May 21, 2013 between the releases of glibc-2.17 and glibc-2.18.
  • Microsoft to Back Cyanogen's Android Efforts - Microsoft has agreed to invest an unknown dollar figure in Cyanogen, which offers a version of Android devoid of Google's strictures. Cyanogen recently raised $70 million in funding, of which Microsoft is playing a minority role say sources cited by the Wall Street Journal. Neither Microsoft nor Cyanogen commented on Microsoft's involvement with the Android software maker, but Cyanogen has big goals. Last week, Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster said, "We're going to take Android away from Google." Cyanogen is working with handset makers to have its version of Android preinstalled on devices rather than Google's. It has succeeded with Micromax in India and is working to win over others. Google may offer Android to OEMs for free, but the search giant places strict requirements for handset makers to access the Play Store and other Google services. Cyanogen claims 50 million people have installed its variant of Android on devices, most of whom are enthusiast users who root their device and sideload the operating system.

NVIDIA Issues Official Statement Regarding GTX970 - tech
(hx) 07:50 PM CET - Jan,25 2015 - Post a comment
After the whole controversy surrounding GTX970's VRAM usage, NVIDIA went ahead and made an official statement regarding this issue.
The GeForce GTX 970 is equipped with 4GB of dedicated graphics memory. However the 970 has a different configuration of SMs than the 980, and fewer crossbar resources to the memory system. To optimally manage memory traffic in this configuration, we segment graphics memory into a 3.5GB section and a 0.5GB section. The GPU has higher priority access to the 3.5GB section. When a game needs less than 3.5GB of video memory per draw command then it will only access the first partition, and 3rd party applications that measure memory usage will report 3.5GB of memory in use on GTX 970, but may report more for GTX 980 if there is more memory used by other commands. When a game requires more than 3.5GB of memory then we use both segments.

We understand there have been some questions about how the GTX 970 will perform when it accesses the 0.5GB memory segment. The best way to test that is to look at game performance. Compare a GTX 980 to a 970 on a game that uses less than 3.5GB. Then turn up the settings so the game needs more than 3.5GB and compare 980 and 970 performance again
