NVIDIA GeForce 353.06 WHQL Driver - tech
(hx) 01:27 AM CEST - Jun,02 2015 - Post a comment
Nvidia has finally released the drivers that offer optimizations and bug fixes that provide increased performance for Kepler-based GPUs. The new driver offers full support for the GeForce GTX 980 Ti. The GeForce 353.06 drivers also include support for Nvidia's new G-Sync technologies, including G-Sync in windowed mode, and the ability to choose between v-sync on and v-sync off when the render rate exceeds the display's supported refresh rate. Ultra-Low Motion Blur is now available through the Nvidia Control Panel as well. Dynamic Super Resolution is now supported on GeForce notebooks with Fermi-based GPUs or higher, and Nvidia has also implemented a range of "optimizations and bug fixes" that should increase performance for those with Kepler-based GPUs. Nvidia has recently come under fire for not optimizing games for their older GPU architectures, so hopefully this driver addresses some of these complaints.

GeForce GTX 980 Ti - Announce Video - tech
(hx) 11:00 AM CEST - Jun,01 2015 - Post a comment / read (1)
Nvidia announced a new flagship graphics card delivering smoother 4K graphics for PC gamers, plus new G-Sync screen technology for smoother gaming on laptops. Dubbed the GeForce GTX 980 Ti, Nvidia says the GTX 980 Ti will deliver better support for 4K PC gaming, allowing new games such as The Witcher 3 to run at 4K resolution at a reasonable 45 frames per second, compared to 19fps on the older GTX 680. For the latest car racing simulator, Project Cars, Nvidia expects to deliver 47fps on the GTX 980 Ti compared with 18fps on the GTX 680. The reference version of the graphics card will retail for $649 (only US pricing was announced, converting to roughly £425 and AU$825) and the new card comes bundled with the upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight for PC. The introduction of the GTX 980 Ti has also dropped the price of the former flagship model, the GTX 980, down to $499.

The new graphics card is powered by the chip maker's Maxwell microarchitecture, which supports the latest DirectX 12 effects and packs in more video RAM as well. It's a significant jump to 6GB of memory, compared with the previous card's 4GB. The second-generation Maxwell chips allow for high-resolution performance and lighting with better frame rates, but they're also a lot more power efficient -- the GTX 980 has half the power consumption of Nvidia's GTX 750, which was powered by the first-generation Maxwell. For the technically inclined, it's interesting that the GTX 980 Ti is clocked slower than previous cards at 1,000MHz. It makes up for it with a better pixel and texture fill rate, while also packing in more transistors -- 8,000 compared to 5,200 of the GTX 980. When you look at the specs in detail, the GTX 980 Ti is basically a cheaper version of Nvidia's ultimate piece of hardware, the $999 Titan X, having only 6GB of video RAM instead of the Titan X's 12GB.

TechNews - Windows 10 slated for mid July 2015 - tech
(hx) 10:28 PM CEST - May,30 2015 - Post a comment / read (6)
How much RAM is in your computer? I made the jump to16GB a year or two ago....
  • Windows 10 signoff is slated for mid July 2015 - Microsoft has said that Windows 10 will be released this Summer and according to the current roadmap, the middle of July is targeted for signoff of the new OS, according to two insiders familiar with the company's plans. Of course, plans can still change but this timeline has been on the books for several weeks with no current sign of slippage. Microsoft is moving aggressively with Windows 10 by offering it for free as an upgrade for the first year and they have already said that additional updates will be free as well. Currently, Microsoft is publicly testing out build 10122 with Insiders, while build 10130 is being used internally by around 1,500 staff, and the company is adding the final few tweaks to the UI while squashing bugs as well.
  • MS will not charge for feature / functionality updates for Windows - One of the most common questions we receive is if Microsoft is going to charge for updates to Windows 10. With Office 365 and many other software products from the company requiring on-going payments, the question has merit, especially since the OS will be a free upgrade for the first year. On a staging site for Windows 10, Microsoft makes it clear that updates that bring features and functionality to the OS, the company will not be charging the consumer. Microsoft says the following on this Windows 10 site: "And even better: once a qualified Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it up to date for the supported lifetime of the device, keeping it more secure, and introducing new features and functionality over time - for no additional charge."
  • Is Your Network Infected With Sleeper Ransomware? - It appears we have a new player in Ransomware City, and this looks like an 800 pound gorilla very similar to CryptoLocker. The bug, which requires a specific string of symbols and Arabic characters to be sent, was first noticed on reddit earlier this afternoon and has been spreading around the Internet since then.
  • Cortana is coming to Android and iOS - Microsoft today said Android and iOS users will soon be able to use Cortana, its virtual assistant, on their smartphones. The Android and iOS Cortana app will work in coordination with Cortana on Windows 10 PCs, according to Microsoft. A Phone Companion app for Windows 10 PCs will help Android and iOS device owners install Cortana on their handset so they can access Microsoft's virtual assistant wherever they go. The Android and iOS version of Cortana will include most features available to the Windows 10 and Windows Phone versions, such as setting reminders, alerts, and alarms; tracking flights and managing travel details; and accessing Cortana's Notebook function for search preferences

Upcoming Kepler Fix Will Increase Performance - tech
(coolio) 09:29 PM CEST - May,29 2015 - Post a comment
A few days ago Nvidia reported on working on driver updates to address Kepler issues with The Witcher 3. It appears though, that Kepler owners will enjoy a performance boost in several games with the new driver. Nvidia's ManuelG noted that the upcoming drivers will offer a universal fix for Kepler GPUs that will boost performance in various PC games. That's good news indeed, especially considering recent allegations that Nvidia is crippling older GPUs performance in the latest games in order to promote its new Maxwell series, something that is quite evident in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as the game runs considerably worse on Kepler GPUs compared to Maxwell 900 series.
AMD Catalyst 15.5 Beta Driver for The Witcher 3 - tech
(hx) 09:16 PM CEST - May,29 2015 - Post a comment
AMD has finally released a new driver that focuses mainly on Project CARS and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. According to its changelog, this driver adds a Crossfire profile for The Witcher 3 and offers up to 10% performance increase on single GPU Radeon R9 and R7 Series graphics products, as well as up to 17% performance increase on Radeon R9 and R7 Series graphics products.
Crossfire Profiles updates for:
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Performance Improvements for the following:
- The Witcher 3 - Wild Hunt: Up to 10% performance increase on single GPU Radeon R9 and R7 Series graphics products
- Project Cars - Up to 17% performance increase on Radeon R9 and R7 Series graphics products

Known Issues:
- The Witcher 3 - Wild Hunt: Crossfire users may experience poor performance or random flickering. As a workaround we suggest disabling Anti-Aliasing from the game’s video - post processing settings. If the issues persist further, we suggest disabling Crossfire while we continue to work with CD Projekt Red to resolve this issue.
- Project CARS: Corruption may be observed if Anti-Aliasing is set to DS2M. As a workaround we suggest using a different Anti-Aliasing setting.

Optimizing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Performance on AMD Radeon Graphics

Further to installing Catalyst 15.5 Beta, there are additional manual steps AMD Radeon customers can take to improve the performance of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Please refer to the following KB support page in order to ensure you get the best possible experience in The Witcher 3.

  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti performance benchmarks - GeForce GTX980Ti is the newest card to join GeForce 900 series. According to our information GTX 980 Ti is using GM200-310 GPU. Card is equipped with 6GB GDDR5 memory and 384-bit interface. The base clock is reportedly at the same frequency as TITAN-X, same goes for memory clock (no surprises here).
  • Apple updates 15-inch MacBook Pro, adds Force Touch - Apple has refreshed its 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, while also dropping the price of its top-of-the-line iMac with Retina 5K Display. The new 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with the pressure-sensitive Force Touch trackpad that debuted in the new MacBook and updated 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display along with some user interface enhancements. The upgrades don't stop there as Apple has also included faster flash storage that adds an extra hour of battery life and AMD's new graphics hardware. The iMac with Retina 5K Display has had a price drop and now starts at just $1,999 with the top-end model just $300 more at $2,299. The new lower starting price was achieved by dropping the Fusion Drive, which combined a traditional 1TB hard drive with a 128GB SSD and automatically moved applications between the two depending on which were in use at the time, but it's worth noting that the higher priced iMac with Retina 5K Display still comes with a Fusion Drive.

  • Factory reset might not remove all data from Android phones - The factory reset feature, which is assumed to be the final step before selling off an old device, has been found to be flawed by the researchers who tested it on 21 devices from five manufacturers. The devices used for the research were rather old and ran builds of Android lower than version 4.4 but the researchers are confident that these issues might still persist in the newer versions of the OS. According to the research paper, the devices that were tested retained data SMS data, emails, contacts, authorized accounts and information from various apps such as Facebook and WhatsApp. Digging deep into retained data, the researchers were able to obtain Google's master token used for authenticating apps such as Calendar and Contacts on the device, as well. It is said that the drivers required for completely wiping the device might not be included by the manufacturers, who generally tend to customize the standard functioning of the operating system, making it not just Google's problem.

Windows 10 upgrade will not be free after one year - tech
(hx) 08:51 PM CEST - May,19 2015 - Post a comment / read (2)
Microsoft has been heavily promoting the fact that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for consumers running Windows 7, 8 or Phone 8.1 when the OS is released later this year. While the company is clearly pushing this 'free upgrade' announcement to make sure they can hit their 1 billion users benchmark, in a post on the company's Australian Partner Network, they explicitly state that the free upgrade offer will expire after one year.
Microsoft will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices in the first year. After the first year, upgrades will be paid via boxed product and VL Upgrades.
This is nothing new, and there is no reason to panic. All Microsoft is saying is that if you want the free upgrade you need to do it in the first year. After that time you will need to buy the upgrade just like you had to do with every other version of windows. Previous upgrades were around $99 to $129 (depending on version) and I imagine this will continue to be the case.

TechNews - SSDs lose data if left without power - tech
(hx) 12:09 AM CEST - May,18 2015 - Post a comment / read (9)
  • World's first 6TB SSD will be available to buy in July - Japanese manufacturer Fixstars is planning 3 new 2.5-inch SSDs carrying the names 1000M, 3000M, and 6000M. The 1000M and 3000M models will use 19nm flash memory, a 6Gbps interface, and offer 1TB and 3TB of storage respectively. It's the 6000M SSD that's the most interesting, though. It will use 15nm flash memory to offer 6TB of storage while retaining the 2.5-inch drive footprint. Read speeds are expected to be 540MB/s and write speeds of 520MB/s, which is typical of any high-end 6Gbps SATA SSD today. Pricing has only been announced for the 1TB drive, which is set at $820. We can expect a large premium on the 3TB model, and an even larger premium on the 6TB drive. It's also unlikely Fixstars has any intention of offering the 6TB drive to consumers. There's a growing demand for large SSDs in the datacenter, and that's where Fixstars' focus will be, at least initially.
  • SSDs lose data if left without power for just 7 days - The standards body for the microelectronics industry has found that Solid State Drives (SSD) can start to lose their data and become corrupted if they are left without power for as little as a week.
  • Nvidia releases first WHQL driver for Windows 10 - Nvidia has beaten AMD to the punch with a full WHQL certified Windows 10 GPU driver, version 352.84, supporting their last three generations of desktop and four generations of mobile GPUs. This is a fairly major milestone for previewing Windows 10 on modern desktops, as solid video driver support is key to a good experience, and video driver issues have been known to plague Windows Insiders before. If you have one of the supported GPUs on the list in your system, and you are running Windows 10 Technical Preview, you should head either here for the 64bit version or here for the 32bit version depending on your architecture. This should improve your Windows 10 experience, although without a proper changelog it is hard to say what, if anything, has actually been fixed.

Oculus Recommended Hardware Specs - tech
(hx) 11:16 PM CEST - May,15 2015 - Post a comment
Atman Binstock, Chief Architect at Oculus and technical director of the Rift, posted the recommended hardware specs for the Oculus Rift this afternoon. Given the challenges around VR graphics performance, the Rift will have a recommended specification to ensure that developers can optimize for a known hardware configuration, which ensures a better player experience of comfortable sustained presence. The recommended PC specification is an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD 290, Intel i5-4590, and 8GB RAM. This configuration will be held for the lifetime of the Rift and should drop in price over time. Apart from the recommended spec, the Rift will require: Windows 7 SP1 or newer, 2x USB 3.0 ports, HDMI 1.3 video output supporting a 297MHz clock via a direct output architecture.
Grand Theft Auto V mods contain malware - tech

Installing random game mods you find on the internet isn't always the safest idea. As it turns out, some popular Grand Theft Auto V mods contain a healthy dose of malware, and should be removed immediately if you've already downloaded and installed them. One of the offending mods is Angry Planes, which sends planes of all sizes to attack your in-game character. While the mod was fun and clever enough to be featured on websites such as PC Gamer and Kotaku, it also contains a keylogger called Fade.exe that was installed alongside the necessary game modifications. Another popular mod, No Clip, also contained the Fade.exe keylogger. Both have since been removed from GTA5-Mods.com, and the popular mod website says they will be reviewing and improving their mod approval process following this nasty incident.

  • The free Windows 10 upgrade is really a 'promotional activity' - Microsoft may be offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 for consumers who own a Windows 7 or 8.1 PC. However, for accounting purposes, the company is labeling this generous deal as a "marketing and promotional activity" in order to avoid a situation that would have normally forced Microsoft to defer revenues from the Windows division in their quarterly financial results. Meanwhile Windows 7 is still the reigning champ of all operating systems for the 14th month in a row. In what has to be an embarrassment to Microsoft, Windows XP is still in the number two position, followed meekly by Windows 8.1, at a dismal third.
  • R.I.P., Windows Media Center - Media Center will not be included in the Windows 10 rollout this summer and will not be offered as an add-on, according to a Microsoft executive
  • Microsoft invites Android and iOS apps to join Windows 10 - Microsoft's Terry Myerson confirmed onstage at Build what many of us suspected in the hours leading up to the event -- the company's going to make it easier for developers to bring Android apps into the Windows Store. To make this possible, Myers said, Windows phones "will include an Android subsystem" meant to play nice with the Java and C++ code developers have already crafted to run on a rival's operating system. Turns out, that's not the only dev-friendly coup we're seeing today: iOS developers can compile their Objective C code right from Microsoft's Visual Studio, and turn it into a full-fledged Windows 10 app. This, frankly, is huge. With one announcement, drawn out of the course of a few minutes, Microsoft may have just changed its mobile trajectory completely.
  • Apple Watch Costs Under $85 To Make - That shiny new Apple Watch Sport may have set you back $350, but from a hardware and manufacturing standpoint it only cost Apple $83.70. According to a teardown carried out by IHS Technology the actual hardware costs of the 38mm Apple Watch Sport are only about 24 percent of the manufacturer's suggested retail price, giving it the lowest hardware costs compared to retail price of any Apple product. The most expensive component is the LG display, which is estimated to cost $20.50, while the processor adds $10.20 and the memory a further $7.20. That tiny battery is estimated to cost a mere $0.80, with the contents of the box - which includes a charger and spare wristband - adding $9.00 to the cost.
  • Elon Musk lays out vision for a battery-powered future - Tesla may be best known for its electric cars, but founder Elon Musk has broader ambitions for the company's battery packs. Last night, the would-be battery baron unveiled his vision. Operating under the umbrella of Tesla Energy, Musk wants to use Tesla's battery technology to help improve the viability of solar power and other renewable energy generation methods.
  • Tesla announces Powerwall, a home battery system starting at $3,000 - s part of a new product line called Tesla Energy, the Powerwall is a battery system that can be installed on the inside or outside of your home. It's designed to be paired with solar panels, charging during the day when solar energy is the highest but usage is relatively low, and then discharging during the night or morning. The Powerwall helps create a sustainable home, as it balances out the load on the power grid throughout the day, reducing consumption during peak periods, which in turn helps curb carbon emissions. It also can save a home owner money, as the Powerwall can charge during off-peak times at a lower cost, and then deliver off-grid power to your house during the more expensive peak periods.  The entry level Powerwall is a 7 kWh unit that will cost $3,000, but there's also a 10 kWh model available for $3,500 (plus installation costs). The units are around six inches thick, four feet tall, and three feet wide. All units will come with a 10 year warranty, and better yet, up to nine units can be stacked together to create a battery as large as 90 kWh. A business-grade battery called the Powerpack will also be available, which will start at 100 kWh and scale "infinitely" to power packs beyond a gigawatt-hour.

  • Intel Compute Stick Review - Intel is using the Atom Z3735F quad-core processor based on the Bay Trail architecture and the 22nm process technology, running at a base clock of 1.33 GHz and a peak Turbo clock rate of 1.83 GHz. Even though the processor is capable of 64-bit processing, Windows 8.1 with Bing ships as a 32-bit operating system, so keep that in mind as it might affect a handful of application's compatibility. The CPU has an SDP (scenario design power) rating of just 2.2 watts and though Intel doesn't list a TDP for it, expect it to peak around 5 watts. Because of the form factor and the lack of any kind of active cooling, thermal throttling will kick in rather soon. Graphics is listed as a generic "Intel HD Graphics" with a clock speed of 311 MHz base and 646 MHz Turbo. Intel HD Audio supports multi-channel digital audio though only through the included HDMI port – there is no optical audio or analog audio connection.
  • Thermaltake Debuts Full Range Of Hand-Built Radiators - Thermaltake, an industry leader in computer chassis, thermal solutions, and power supply units, introduces the full range of Pacific RL (over 50mm thickness) and R Series (under 50mm thickness) radiators. Integrated G1/4" threads make it easy to install, while rigid connections ensure they are leak-resistant. With an ideal mounting, fitting and flow set-up, the Thermaltake Pacific Radiator Series is guaranteed to go above and beyond your current cooling standards.

Seriously - Google and Apple aren't exactly the best of friends, but a discovery on Google Maps - showing the Android mascot emptying its bladder onto the Apple logo - has still managed to raise a few eyebrows. The idea to avoid late night interruptions and to have a customized "downtime" setting is beautifully systemized by this version. During that time it has: improved the look and feel of the app; added support for IMAP; improved the People (contacts) section; added a Directory Search tool; introduced a three-day view in the calendar; and bestowed the app with a handful of gestures for navigating between emails and folders. Microsoft says Outlook for Android is on even footing with its Outlook for iOS application, which it made available earlier this year. • Attackers can easily bypass current OSX security tools - For sometime, most people believed that owning a Mac was a safe choice, and that only Windows users could get hacked. However, researcher Patrick Wardle doesn't seem to think so. During a talk at the RSA Conference recently, Wardle explained the security measures on OSX are actually full of holes, if a competent hacker chose to exploit them. First up, he said that GateKeeper, Apple's app verifier, doesn't check extra content in apps, but rather only the app bundle itself. Meaning that attackers could load a verified app with dangerous extra content and it could, according to Wardle, slide right through Apple's security. The researcher went on to say that Apple's sandbox technology on OSX is quite strong in terms of security, but there were a number of bugs that can be used to bypass it.
  • Researchers Find Another Terrifying iOS Flaw - At San Francisco's RSA conference, an even more terrifying exploit has been revealed that has the power to send your iPhone or iPad into a perpetual restart loop. Mobile security firm Skycure has discovered that iOS 8 has an innate vulnerability to SSL certificates that, when combined with another WiFi exploit, gives malicious types the ability to create "no iOS zones" that can render your smartphones and tablets unusable.
  • Verizon Once Again Offering 10GB and 15GB Plans - Verizon Wireless has resumed offering two large data plans for shared lines at a promotional rate. The first costs $80 per month for 10 GB of data and the second costs $100 for 15 GB of data. Verizon first offered these plans in November 2014, but pulled them in February. "We have different offers throughout the year, and right now the $80/$100 plans are available," said a Verizon spokesperson. The plans will be available for a limited time, but Verizon didn't say for how long. The prices don't include device access fees for smartphones, tablets, and hotspots. By way of comparison, AT&T's 10 GB plan costs $100 and its 15 GB plan costs $130.
  • Republicans to Let NSA Keep Spying On Your Calls - Republicans recently introduced a bill in the Senate that will extend the NSA's ability to collect and store phone call data through December 2020. As it stands today, the law (part of the Patriot Act) is slated to expire June 1. The Obama administration has asked for changes to the program, such as having telephone companies, rather than the NSA, store phone call data. The Obama administration also wants the program scaled back -- especially after the negative blowback following the program's revelation by Edward Snowden. Amazon has long had the "One Click Buy" feature on its mobile apps and Website and the functionality made it onto the Apple Watch leading the reviewer's large fingers to accidentally press the button and order an Xbox One for $350 much to his surprise. The order can be canceled, of course, but Amazon might want to look at adding a confirm button in there somewhere to stop accidents like this happening, especially on smaller screens.

Having Problems With GTA 5 Crashing On PC? - tech
(hx) 12:12 AM CEST - Apr,24 2015 - Post a comment / read (4)
Obviously NVIDIA and AMD both released game launch drivers for their cards to run GTA V optimally and Rockstar themselves have patched it but even so, GTA 5's crashes still persist and they are starting to tarnish the game. Here's a quick solution:
Step 1. Disable V-SYNC so the game no longer locks at 60fps

Step 2. Turn off Tesselation; this seems to help a lot with the crashes

Step 3. Set the resolution to match your monitor and also set the game to run in "Borderless Window Mode".

Lord only knows. You shouldn't have chosen that CPU. It's a Haswell chip, and Haswells run too hot. You shouldn't have gotten those GTX 770s, because Nvidia is obviously going to reveal the 800 series soon and those will be much faster. You shouldn't have gotten that heatsink, because a water cooler will let you overclock much more. The icon in the taskbar switches to the charging icon and the device goes into the power mode as if it was plugged into the wall (brightness 100%) :D After a few minutes, Windows will say 'Plugged in but not charging' which means that the device is smart enough to not create a loop ;-)

Grand Theft Auto V 4K System Requirements - tech
(hx) 09:30 PM CEST - Apr,09 2015 - Post a comment
PC Gamer has word that you won't need the beefiest computer to get to 60 frames-per-second at 1080p, but 4K resolution will be (and require) an entirely different beast :-)
According to Rockstar, the recommended specifications are based on hardware that can run the game at 1080p, at 60 frames-per-second. For that, Rockstar suggest a Nvidia GTX 660 2GB or AMD HD7870 2GB.

"To run the game on a 4K display at 30fps," says Hoare, "you’ll need at minimum an AMD HD 7870 or Nvidia GTX 760 with 2GB of VRAM." As for the 4K at 60 frames-per-second, that'll require a "high-end SLI or Crossfire setup."

  • Early Benchmarks Put Retina MacBook CPU Performance  - According to MacRumors, the new benchmarks put the 2015 MacBook on par in terms of sheer numbers with a 2011 i7 MacBook Air. But, the true power of the new Intel chip cannot be determined solely by the GeekBench benchmarking tool because it does not measure the graphics capability of the new chip. In order to judge the true performance of the new MacBook, a more comprehensive test will have to be performed that tests the GPU and improved SSD. Apple offers two additional processor upgrade options for the Retina MacBook, at 1.2GHz in the higher-end machine and at 1.3GHz as an optional build-to-order upgrade, both of which will see somewhat better performance results than the entry-level 1.1GHz processor. Prices start at $1,299 for the 1.1GHz/8GB/256GB model and $1,599 for the 1.2GHz/8GB/512GB model.

Though XP's grip on the market continues to loosen, it remains the No. 2 most-used operating system based on Net Application's Web stats, beating Windows 8 and 8.1 and their collective share of 14 percent. Windows 8.1 took the third spot with a 10.5 percent share, leaving Windows 8 in fifth place with just 3.5 percent. It will be interesting to see how well Windows 10 does once it hits the market. Especially considering it will be free for Windows 7 - 8.1 users for the first year.
  • Microsoft says that open sourcing Windows is "definitely possible" - Microsoft has changed a great deal over the years - from launching its own devices to its new cross-platform strategy of making its software as widely available as possible. But if you were in any doubt of the company's changing attitudes, consider the comments made by its Technical Fellow, Mark Russinovich. In an interview published today by WIRED, Russinovich said that open sourcing its Windows operating system is "definitely possible". Indeed, he added that Microsoft has already discussed and considered the possibility: "Every conversation you can imagine about what [we] should do with our software - open versus non-open versus services - has happened."

  • LG Shows Off the G4's QHD Display - LG Display today revealed a new screen for smartphones that stretches 5.5 inches across the diagonal and boasts quad HD (2,560 x 1,440) resolution. According to LG, the new panel uses in-cell touch technology to reduce thickness while maintaining excellent sensitivity. It can be used when wet, for example. LG also says the LCD panel offers 50% higher contrast and is 30% brighter than its previous screens, while not requiring any more power. Combined, LG says these two elements help improve outdoor viewability. LG plans to use the panel in and upcoming flagship smartphone, which is likely the successor to last year's G3.
  • Here's how to run Android apps on your PC or Mac - The first thing you will need is a version of the Chrome browser which is over 40 and the ARC Chrome app. Once the app has been added to the app launcher within Chrome, an Android app's APK needs to be found. A simple Google search will yield results. Once downloaded, open the ARC app and find the .apk file which has been downloaded and open it. The ARC app will give various settings - which orientation the screen should be and so on - and once you are happy with those, simply click "Launch App" and the app will start. The software is only in beta, so don't expect perfect service, but the apps that I loaded worked well and Google is going to be frequently updating ARC in order to add new features.
  • Google Adds Master Inbox View to Gmail for Android - Google today updated its Gmail application for Android devices with the ability to see all emails from various accounts in a single, master inbox. Using the new "All Inboxes" option will lump together emails from Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, and IMAP/POP accounts into a single view. This way users can respond to emails from all their accounts without having to switch inboxes. Further, Google will automatically thread email conversations from non-Gmail addresses to help users keep their inbox under control. Other new features include improved auto-complete when using the search box, more responsive animations, larger attachment previews, and the ability to save to Drive with a single tap. The new version of Gmail for Android devices is available from the Google Play Store.
  • Sling TV will add HBO content - Although it was thought that Apple would have exclusive access to HBO content, it looks like Sling TV will also offer HBO content in the near future. While an exact date has not been announced, Sling TV ensures that it will have HBO content on its service in time to watch the April 12th season premiere of Game of Thrones. This will be excellent news to some, knowing that they will not be required to purchase an Apple TV in order to subscribe to HBO service. Naturally, Sling TV subscribers will have the same type of access to HBO's content as those subscribed to HBO GO. Along with acclaimed series like True Detective and The Wire, subscribers will also have access to movies like the Fast & Furious 6 and The Lego Movie. You will still be required to sign up for Sling's basic service which is priced at $20 USD a month. HBO access will be an additional $15 on top of that. Currently, Sling TV can be viewed on a variety of streaming boxes and the Xbox One.
  • The startup CEO who stole $765k from his friends - Dressed in matching yellow scrubs from the nearby Alameda County Jail, Jon Mills looked resigned to his fate. After taking a plea deal on two felony counts of wire fraud, the young former startup CEO appeared in federal court Tuesday afternoon for sentencing. Mills had moved to California five years ago with a dream to hit it big in Silicon Valley. The company he founded, Motionloft, uses small sensors to perform analytics on in-store foot traffic. Everything worked. The company continues to succeed, and celebrity venture capitalist Mark Cuban remains its sole investor. But that success wasn't enough. In early 2013, Mills told at least five people that if they gave him relatively small amounts of money, they would own stakes in the company. He claimed that a Cisco acquisition worth hundreds of millions of dollars was supposedly imminent, so Mills and all Motionloft shareholders others would stand to make a tidy profit. In reality, Mills knew the deal didn't exist.

Battlefield Hardline Performance Video Card Review - tech
(hx) 09:23 AM CEST - Apr,02 2015 - Post a comment / read (1)
The chaps over at HardOCP tested a dozen video cards to see just what it takes to get the most out of Battlefield Hardline. Here's an excerpt:
In terms of performance, we did feel that it is a bit more demanding than BF4 on the whole. It seems like we are having to run at lower settings in this game, compared to BF4. It certainly felt like performance was slower in this one with the current generation of video cards we have. It took high-end video cards to run smoothly at 1440p with the highest in-game settings. At 4K even the new GeForce GTX TITAN X cannot run this game and will need more GPU horsepower to enjoy 4K gaming.

When it comes down to finding out what is the best video card for this game, you have to break it down into what target display will you be using. If you are going to be doing 4K gaming, right now SLI and CrossFire are not providing great scaling at 4K. Your best choice is the single-GPU GeForce GTX TITAN X until scaling is improved. Otherwise, even with GTX 980 SLI and R9 290X CrossFire you will be pressing for more performance to enjoy the game.

If you are going for 1440p gameplay, the GTX 980 was faster than the R9 290X and allowed a higher in-game setting. Between the R9 290X and GTX 970 though, the gameplay experience was the same. Therefore, we'd opt for the less expensive AMD Radeon R9 290X as a better value over the GTX 970 at 1440p for this game.

If you are targeting 1080p you cannot beat the awesomeness of the AMD Radeon R9 280X. Prices have fallen on these video cards, and it beats anything NVIDIA has at that price range. If you want more performance though, the AMD Radeon R9 290 at 1080p would be even faster for 1080p gaming. NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 960 and AMD's Radeon R9 285 are basically slow for this game even at 1080p.

Any card less than those is going to either require you drop in-game settings a lot, or drop resolution.

We did not find that Battlefield Hardline uses an exorbitant amount of VRAM in the maps. We only exceeded 4GB of VRAM at 4K with 4X MSAA, which wasn't playable on any video card. At 1440p it can maximize 3GB or just over 3GB of VRAM. At 1080p though, it can certainly use over 2GB of VRAM if the video card has more than 2GB on board. It seems at 1080p with 4X MSAA 2GB may be limiting. The R9 280X used over 2GB of VRAM at that setting, showing its advantage with the 3GB of VRAM on board.

It seems that our advice as far as VRAM goes, if you are going to game at 4K you will want a video card that has over 4GB of VRAM on it, so 6GB video cards would be perfectly fine. For 1440p 4GB video cards would be best, to allow these to go slightly past 3GB of usage. For 1080p it is clear 3GB is needed so that these can exceed 2GB when running 1080p with 4X MSAA. 2GB video cards are starting to show their limitations at 1080p.
